Queensland hosts vast deposits of brown and black coal, significant accumulations ranging in age from Permian to early Tertiary. The great diversity of coal resources in the State to some extent reflects the proximity of Queensland to plate-marginal tectonic processes through much of the Phanerozoic eon. Coal is contained within sedimentary basin fills of four fundamental types; 1. extensional, 2. foreland, 3. strike-slip, and 4. intracratonic. Thick (10 m+) though laterally restricted coal bodies are characteristic of extensional and strike-slip basins, whereas coals of more modest thickness but much greater lateral extent are typical of foreland and intracratonic basins.

The Hellyer Pb-Zn-Ag orebody in western Tasmania was discovered in 1983, and mine production at a rate of 250 000 tonnes/yr commenced in 1987. Expansion to 1 million/yr will be completed by early 1989. Exploratory development to gain access to the orebody, to provide a 20 000 tonne bulk sample for pilot plant work and to confirm mining conditions and orebody continuity was undertaken using conventional drill and blast techniques and large diesel trackless equipment. A ventilation shaft was raisebored. Development in this phase totalled 2 815 m and provided a sound basis for rapid expansion of the mine.

The Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited produces 5.1 million tonnes of copper ore and 2.2 million tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore from sublevel open stopes annually. Extraction of the narrow, steeply dipping silver-lead-zinc orebodies requires a strategy quite different to that used in the massive copper orebodies. A range of blasthole diameters, explosive types and initiation systems gives the flexibility needed to adapt open stoping to a variety of situations. Hole diameters from 70 mm to 200 mm are being used, with lengths of up to 100 m common for the latter.

A neutron irradiation technique has been developed which is suitable for the determinat- ion of the iron and aluminium content of iron ore fines (-6 mm particle size) on a moving rubber conveyor belt. The determination of iron entails measure- ment with a NaI(Tl) gamma ray detector of the characteristic prompt gamma rays (7.64 MeV) due to thermal neutron capture in iron, while the determination of aluminium is based on thermal neutron activation analysis. For the latter a second detector must be placed down- stream to monitor the 1.78 MeV gamma radiation emitted after activation of aluminium. Although conveyor speed has no effect on the Fe measurement, it has an adverse influence on the aluminium signal, and the belt speed should not exceed 0.1 m/s if good accuracy is required. "The large Yandi channel iron deposit (CID) is located in the north-west of Western Australia and is currently mined via open pit methods. Drilling at Yandi is widely spaced and current estimates are mostly linear averages of the surrounding local samples. Linear estimates such as ordinary kriging (OK) based on block sizes that are significantly smaller than the dimensions of the drilling grid are less variable than the unknown reality (Armstrong and Champigny, 1989).Conditional simulation (CS) provides a series of plausible realisations that represent the actual grade variability at a small scale (eg 1 m + 1 m + 1 m). These simulations are very useful for a number of purposes, eg: optimising grade control, stockpiling and blending selection of optimal drill hole spacing assessing resource risk on contained tonnage and metal.At Yandi the major constituents of the ore (Fe, P2O5, SiO2, Al2O3 and LOI) are correlated to varying degrees. Independent CS of each assay variable will not reproduce these correlations. Reproducing the correlations (and the shape of scatterplots) is important if the simulations are used for the abovementioned purposes. This paper examines and compares various methods of CS that aim to reproduce the correlations between the assay variables.The CS methods evaluated in this paper are conditional co-simulation (CCS) using the linear model of co-regionalisation and two other, alternative multivariate simulation methods, which use min/max autocorrelation factors (MAF) or the stepwise conditional transform (SCT) to de-correlate assay variables before performing independent CS. It was found that CCS best reproduced the characteristics (histograms, variogram, scatterplots, etc) of the declustered drill hole data (Figure 1). Whilst simulation using MAF generally produced acceptable results, the method did not adequately reproduce the variance of the assay variables. The univariate statistics, histograms and experimental variograms were acceptable for simulations generated from the SCT. Bivariate statistics, cross-variograms and scatterplot reproduction for the SCT were unacceptable. The latter method produced inferior results because there were insufficient samples to obtain a reliable transform of the third assay variable in the transformation sequence.None of the abovementioned simulation methods provides good reproduction of all the scatterplots. This is due to the presence of clay pods, which cause some scatterplots to display two trends. These clay pods contain higher percentages of SiO2 and Al2O3 than the surrounding CID. The clay pods are generally smaller than the drill-grid dimensions. Thus their locations are typically unknown and they cannot be defined by manual interpretation, eg via wireframes. The locations of the clay pods were simulated via indicator CS. CCS was then performed separately for the clay pods and the CID. This significantly improved the reproduction of the correlation coefficients, the scatterplots and visually the simulation was more geologically realistic. Minerals and Metals Group (MMG) Century mine (Century) is a large open-cut mine in northwest Queensland approximately 2.5 km long, 1.5 km wide and 240 m deep, with an ultimate pit depth of 320 m. In 2009, the mine experienced three failures which began as small failures, and progressively developed into significant multi-batter failures. The incidents were managed by a combination of analysis, redesign and practical management to achieve positive outcomes for the mine. On the south wall of the mine, a series of batter-scale wedge failures occurred in December 2007. Analysis of structure orientations and design changes aimed to minimise the risk of failure extending over multiple batters, while accepting a risk of further small-scale failures. Design changes were constrained by a culturally sensitive area (CSA) located south of the wall. As mining progressed, shallow wedge failures developed over multiple batters and cracks were observed 60m back from the pit crest, indicating that a large-scale wedge failure was developing. Movement increased in January 2009 as a result of significant rainfall. After considering several design options, the area was stabilised by a cut-back of the wall. Two multi-batter failures also occurred on the north wall as mining progressed through a structurally complex area. Both north wall failures began as small failures that progressively developed, and required a redesign of the wall below as well as practical management of safety aspects. The complex structural geology was difficult to predict ahead of mining, and required geotechnical input into design changes as mining progressed. All three failures potentially had significant impact for ore recovery, and were managed by a combination of analysis, redesign and operational management have resulted to achieve positive outcomes in a challenging mining environment.

The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has conducted an intensive VertiMill® (VTM) survey program at the Cannington mine concentrator as part of the ‘collaborative research in stirred milling technology’ program funded by Metso Minerals. Since 2003, Cannington has progressively added grinding capacity into the circuit through VTMs operating in secondary and regrinding duties. Cannington was one of the first mines to adopt this technology in secondary duty by installing two VTM-1500-WBs as part of a capacity expansion to produce sub-100 µm rougher feed. Subsequently, an additional VTM-800-WB was installed in the lead regrind circuit to prepare sub-20 µm cleaner stage feed.Several surveys were carried out to evaluate the VTM performance over a range of changed conditions. Among the key changes in operating variables were circuit power draw, feed rate and water addition to the bottom of the mill. The average specific energy for secondary duty was 3.7?kWh/t. The lead and zinc regrind mills consume 8.1 and 15.3 kWh/t respectively. Generally, the VTM installations have successfully prepared feed for rougher and cleaner circuits by reducing the top size into the floatable regime with steeper particle size distribution, which has led to enhanced recovery. Over the last six years Mandalay Resources has increased production rates and improved safety outcomes at its Costerfield mine in Victoria, Australia. This mine is an underground operation utilising narrow mining techniques to extract vertical veins, and produces up to 80 000 equivalent ounces of gold per annum, in both gold and antimony value.The operational challenges of narrow vein mining include controlling overbreak when veins being mined are only 300 mm wide. The mine has developed methods and modified equipment to suit extraction of these veins. Productivity improvements over the period have involved development of a stoping method and equipment to suit 1.8 m wide development drives. Over the last five years and during a skills shortage, recruitment, training and retention of personnel has been key to keeping corporate knowledge and skills to execute a careful efficient mining technique to minimise overbreak.Managing an underground operation close to nearby residents has unique challenges. Historically Victorian residents had family members work as underground miners; however, in the current day with few underground operations in this jurisdiction, community knowledge of mining has decreased. The Costerfield Operations are only 100 m from the nearest residence and the company values community engagement, partnership and investment with local Heathcote organisations.The mine has invested substantially in executive coaching of its leadership team early, which has paid dividends in problem solving potential of that team and ensuring the operation delivers on its promises to all stakeholders. Tomago sandbeds is an unconfined coastal aquifer located 20km. north of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. These sandbeds extend over an area of about 130km. The average aquifer depth is about 20m. with a mean transmissivity of about 400sq.m/day and a specific yield of about 0.2. The city of Newcastle and surrounding areas derive water from Tomago for potable purposes. The average extraction being about 50 ML/day. The iron value of the ground water varies between 5 and 15mg/1. This iron is removed by a conventional water treatment plant using Alum. The aquifer whilst principally quartzose also contains deposits of heavy minerals like rutile, zircon, ilmenite, etc., The mineral sand mining has been in progress at Tomago since 1972. Mining is carried out in a con- structed pond with a water depth of about 5m. on which is floated a suction cutter dredge that moves across the front of the pond using a water jet to entrain the soil from the ground surface to the bottom of the mineralised zone. Effect of mineral sand mining on ground water quality, particularly iron, was the subject of intensive investigations undertaken at Tomago since 1970. The effect on water quality was studied by collecting and analysing water samples from network of observation wells established during the period of mining. Water samples were collected about 4-5 years prior to mining and analysed for iron, sulphate, chloride, pH, etc., After mining the observation wells were re-established at the same locations and water samples were collected and analysed for at least 5 years after mining. This paper introduces a new coal-based rotary kiln process of DRI production - the CRIMM process, which is developed by Changsha Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in the past years. Its main features are the use of composite pellets (in rotary kiln). The process consists of preparation of pellets from iron concentrate and coating of coal on their surfaces. The new process is able to overcome a series of defects of the conventional coal-based rotary kiln processes. A continuous test was conducted using an experiment rotary kiln (-0.6;, x 3 m). TFe of the magnetic iron concentrate used in the test is 67.25 per cent. TFe of the product DRI is 88.54 per cent, MFe is 84.11 per cent, S and P are less than 0.02 per cent. The metallisation ratio of pellet is 95 per cent. The pellet power ratio is less than 0.3 per cent. The utilisation coefficient of rotary kiln is 1.3 t/m'-d. The overall recovery of iron concentrates is 99.7 per cent. Two small industrial plants using the CRIMM process are being set up in China. Their coal consumption can be decreased to 520 kg standard coal per ton DRI respectively.

Perseverance nickel deposit is located at latitude 27¦ 491S, longitude 1200 42'E, 330 km north of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Gossanous outcrops were discovered in April, 1971, and after further detailed surface investigations, percussion drilling led to diamond drilling by June, 1971. Up to December, 1972, 127 diamond holes totalling 45,590 m were drilled to indicate 33 million tonnes averaging 2.2% Ni using a 1% cut-off grade. The deposit occurs in a lenticular ultra- mafic unit emplaced in metasediments locally forming the eastern flank of the Archaean green- stone belt trending NNW from Leonora to Wiluna. To the east a major strike fault separates the metasediments from gneiss; westwards there is a sequence of metavolcanics with further ultra- mafic units. Length of the lens is 3500 m and it attains a maximum width of 800 In. The eastern contact is moderately regular, but the western contact is prominently embayed. Local strikes are NNW, and dips are steeply W. A set of strike faults cuts the ultramafics and enveloping quartzites. These are normal faults, parallel to the major eastern fault, dipping 65-70¦W. The mostly submerged New Zealand sub-continent has a complex geological history and an active oceanographic regime that provides opportunities and challenges for offshore mineral exploration. Known deposits include polymetallic Fe-Mn nodules and crusts, polymetallic massive sulfides, phosphatic nodules, titanomagnetitie ironsands and placer gold deposits. Currently exploration interest is high with some 3.5 per cent of the EEZ under prospecting permit or application.   Article 76 of the UNCLOS convention allows coastal states to have sovereign rights over areas of the seafloor that are natural prolongations of the landmass that constitute submerged parts of the continental margin as extended continental shelf. New Zealand has substantial areas of elevated ridges and plateaux beyond the 200 M EEZ that form extended continental shelf. New Zealand has nearly completed a ten year, $44.4 M programme to define its outer extended continental shelf. New Zealand will lodge its outer limits of the extended continental shelf with the UN-appointed Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in 2006, which if accepted, will enclose ~1.8 million km2 beyond the existing EEZ. Narrow vein gold mineralisation generally contains both fine (<100 ¦m) and coarse (>100 ¦m) gold particles. The in situ size and shape, deportment, distribution and abundance of the particles controls deposit sampling characteristics, grade distribution and metallurgical properties. Particles can range from individual disseminated grains, clusters of particles and masses above 1 cm in size. At each end of the coarse-gold to fine-gold spectrum, the samplability of a deposit ranges from relatively simple for fine-grained disseminated gold particles, through to extremely difficult for very coarse particles. Deposits generally show a background grade of mineralisation dominated by disseminated fine gold particles. Drilling will resolve the background grade well, though is likely to considerably understate the grade related to the coarser gold particles. Gold mineralogy has a significant impact on metallurgy, with key factors affecting recovery being particle size, deportment, liberation parameters and silver content of gold minerals. For coarse gold particles the focus should be on liberation and the early removal of the particles from the mill circuit by gravity concentrators and gold traps. Finer particles will require more grinding to liberate prior to flotation or cyanide extraction. The determination of gold particle sizing is thus required to minimise evaluation and geometallurgical uncertainty and lower project risk.

The constructionhunnelling industry in Hong Kong has taken an upturn during the last few years due to the commencement of works to relocate the International Airport to Chek Lap Kok Island. The Airport Core Program consists of ten individual projects including roads, landfill, bridges and tunnels to build the airport and link it to the mainland of Hong Kong. Part of one of these projects is Cheung Ching Tunnel located on Tsing Yi Island. The proposed tunnel consists of a 1.6 km twin tube road tunnel through the island's central ridge, taking three lanes of traffic each way. Each tunnel is 16 m wide - (the widest road tunnel in Hong Kong) and are 10 m high. ICI Explosives (China) saw an opportunity to supply bulk explosives to the Cheung Ching tunnel and contacted ICI Australia to determine availability of a bulk system for tunnel blasting, and assist in its introduction. This paper discusses the methodology behind developing that bulk system to suit a large tunnel drill and blast operation. It also looks at the problems encountered along the way, from the development of the product to the application of the system in the tunnel and the eventual success of introducing a bulk system into a large tunnelling project.

Commencing early in 1975, Saraji Mine in Central Queensland will product 3.56 million tonnes in the first year and then 4.57 million tonnes annually for the Japanese and European markets. The coal will be mined from a series of pits separated by corridors which will be mined at a later date. Through the corridors flow regional drainage structures and power lines. Relatively easy areas will be mined initially to assist the cash flow and to minimise start-up difficulties. For ease of scheduling it is desirable that pit lengths exceed 3 000m but this will not always be possible. Ramps were designed using 1 200m spacing and 5 per cent gradient as optimum but modified to suit specific conditions. One ramp will be in the end of each pit nearest the ROM hopper and stripping will commence from this end. The advantages so gained are shorter haul distances, immediate access to the coal after stripping and simplification of the excavation of the first ramp. Haul road location was defined by the minimum present value of construction plus operating costs. Flue gases from electrical power station boilers, roasting, metallurgical and chemical plants could be treated by flotation using conventional flotation machines. The flue gases are introduced into the pulp instead of the air. The flotation media is a suspension of Ca(OH)2 or CaCO3 or a solution of NH4OH etc containing Na oleate as collector and frother. The SO2 and dust content of the initial flue gases were experimentally reduced by 100 to 1000 times in one flotation operation. The velocity of the flue gases through flotation machines could reach approximatively 0.4 to 0.5 m/s and more against 1.5 m/s reached in scrubber absorbers used for this purpose, but the quality of purification is expected to be better for flotation, which is essential for the cases of heavy polluted metallurgical and chemical flue gases. For some chemical plants the flue gases flotation media may be different and more suitable as compared to the above mentioned media. The proposed flotation method could be used for separation of dry grinded ores in the form of aerosols, with a realisation of flotation from a closed space (gas bubble in the pulp) onto the interface liquid-air where the particles are attached inside the bubbles.

Ore fragmentation at the DOZ block cave mine is highly variable, both as a function of rock type and column height of draw. Initially, the mine was constructed and equipped with limited capability to handle drawpoint oversize material. Significant issues with drawpoint availability and achieving overall mine production targets resulted. A suite of secondary sizing tools was added to the mine equipment fleet over a one-year time frame. Although significant oversize continues to be experienced, use of the correct secondary breakage tool for each particular oversize or hang-up occurrence has resulted in increased drawpoint availability, production rate, draw compliance, and operator safety. Currently, a range of secondary breakage techniques is being utilised to size material for delivery to the primary crusher. Run-of-mine material (3) is directly mucked to ore passes fitted with grizzlys that have one-metre square openings. Ore containing small boulders (>1 m3, 3) is loader-trammed to ore passes fitted with rockbreakers. Medium-sized boulders (>2 m3) accessible from the drawpoint are drilled with Sandvik Tamrock Commando drills. Boulders hung-up within the drawbell are drilled and charged with a Sandvik Tamrock Secondary Breakage Unit. Compacted, fine-grained muck is blasted utilising 55 mm cartridge powder concussion bombs.

Peak Downs Mine, a five million tonnes a year coking coal operation, strip mines a, series of Permian coal seams. Seam thickness ranges from 0.5m to 5.0m, and seams consist of multiple coal plies with intermediate shale and mudstone partings. Four 47m3 draglines strip overburden to a cover depth of up to 60m. Coal loading is by 12m3 shovels and 14m3 to 18m3 front-end loaders. Parting removal takes place where the layer of shale and mudstone between seams exceeds 0.3m in thickness. Parting has been removed by a wide variety of earthmoving equipment in order to evaluate the problem and to select the optimum method from an operational and economic standpoint. Multi-seam stripping of the thicker seams is accomplished by working draglines from spoil- pile benches. Coal seams thinner than lm are recovered by dragline and stacked in the pit for later loading.

The Gladstone Hill area hosts epithermal veins similar to those at Martha Hill, which is less than one kilometre away. There are several vein types in the Gladstone Hill area including (1) pyrite-marcasite, (2) quartz, (3) base metal sulfide, and (4) calcite. Pyrite veinlets formed first, whereas the quartz and carbonate veins formed later. The base metal sulfide vein occurs at depth and is predominantly comprised of quartz and chlorite intimately intergrown with pyrite, sphalerite, galena, and rare chalcopyrite. Platy calcite and massive calcite veinlets were the last vein types to form. Several vein textures occur in the Gladstone Hill area, including colloform and crustiform banding, lattice-bladed, zonal, comb, massive and feathery textures. Crustiform banded veins are the dominant texture and contain variable gold-silver grades. Colloform banded veins consist of ubiquitous quartz and minor chalcedony with gold grades as high as 60 g/t. The lattice-bladed texture forms from the deposition of calcite, which has been replaced in many samples by quartz, indicating that boiling and later cooling has taken place. Unreplaced platy calcite only occurs at deeper levels (>300 m). Zonal and comb textures are preserved in quartz and late-stage amethyst veins. Feathery textures within quartz are commonly associated with breccias and some colloform banding, and with significant Au-Ag grades.   The homogenisation temperatures (Th) of primary and secondary inclusions in quartz, amethyst and platy calcite range from 166 to 274¦C, with salinities <1.3 wt% NaCI equiv. The presence of vapor-dominated inclusions and primary fluid inclusions in platy calcite suggests that boiling occurred intermittently throughout deposition. The veins formed under a relatively flat lying paleowater table that occurred 280 - 300 m above sea level. The fluids involved in vein formation were alkali chloride in composition and low in CO2.

Experimental Study of Ore Characterisation Methods for AG/SAG Mills Mining companies have long recognised the importance of ore breakage characterisation in design and optimisation of their crushing and grinding circuits. In one of the industry standard methods relevant to AG/SAG milling, ore is characterised using mainly high energy single impact tests. However recent DEM studies have suggested that breakage in AG/SAG mills is mainly due to low energy repetitive (or multiple) collisions rather than single high energy impacts. Hence a study was initiated at the JKMRC to investigate the behaviour of ores under such conditions. Carefully designed experiments have been performed using two laboratory mill sizes (0.6 m and 1.1 m diameter) to mimic the reported low energy repetitive impact breakage under low load conditions. The breakage characterisation parameters derived from standard high energy single impact tests on the same ores was then used to predict the low energy repetitive impact breakage. Significant bias was found in the simulations which clearly warranted further investigation. The extensive experimental program which followed employed three separate methods: the JKRBT (JK Rotary Breakage Tester) for high energy single impact and low energy repetitive impacts, gravity drops for low energy repetitive impacts, and laboratory mills to provide an extended number of low energy repetitive impacts. The breakage energies associated with these experiments were accurately measured with a high speed video camera. Two breakage indices, the degree of breakage (t10) and the breakage probability (S) were used to describe the breakage test results. This paper summarises the major results from this experimental study, which has facilitated the development of a new breakage characterization method relevant to AG/SAG mill modelling.
