Backfil ling of excavated Sub Level Open Stopes has been underway since March 1989 and as at December 1992 some 1 100 000 cubic metres of Cemented Aggregate Fill have been placed. During these three years significant developments in fill quantities, types and cost have taken place.Operational improvements have reduced the quantity of Cement Aggregate Fill by 40 per cent. These results have been achieved by:ò rescheduling stopes,ò designing smaller primary stope, and ò use of uncemented rockfill.Unit cost for Cement Aggregate Fill have fallen in the order of 50 per cent through:improving fill hole reli ability,simplified barricade construction procedures, reducing the cement content,ò substituting dune sand for deslimed mill tailings, ò improved maintenance at the Backfill plant, and ò renegotiated site freight agreement.This paper will review the historical developments of backfill use at Olympic Dam.

The ores of the Golden Mile exhibit considerable complexity. As a consequence, the operating company, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), considered it important to develop a coherent database of information describing the nature of the many ore lodes in terms of (1) rock properties and mineralogical content, including relative proportions, grain size, associations and deportment of key elements between minerals, (2) the relative behaviour of consituent minerals in various stages of processing and (3) the nature of the final products and key intermediate streams. The paper describes a sequence of metallurgical tests covering comminution, flotation, gravity concentration, leaching and calcining, carried out on three lodes of the Golden Mile. Key samples generated by the testing were subjected to comprehensive size-by-elemental assaying and QEM*SEM mineralogical determinations of sulphide and precious metal associations. Significant differences between lodes were identified, and the impact of these differences on processing is discussed.

In the past year, two very innovative gold ore processing plants have been designed, built and commissioned by Gekko Systems Pty Ltd. The first plant in Vietnam utilises conventional crushing and ball milling followed by gravity concentration (Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) and Falcon concentrator), flotation, intensive leaching (GFIL), the first industrial scale use of AuRIX«100å ion exchange resin and a cyanide destruction circuit. The second plant, in Australia, uses a three-stage crushing circuit to crush the gold ore to minus 1 mm, followed by gravity concentration utilising a rougher, scavenger, cleaner circuit of IPJs and a Falcon concentrator. A direct smeltable gold concentrate is produced as well as a lower grade concentrate for future intensive leaching or sale. Both plants were designed and built within very tight time frames and budgetary constraints. The experience gained during the plantsÆ design, commissioning and operation are discussed.

Gunpowder Copper Ltd is using in-situ leaching to extract copper from the Mammoth sulphide ore deposit in north-west Queensland. To increase metal recovery, ore is fragmented using conventional underground longhole drilling and blasting techniques. Although the upper levels of the orebody had previously been mined by open cut and underground methods, significant reserves of copper existed around old workings. To safely and economically recover this resource, a decision was made to fire the remaining pillars in the upper part of the mine by a single 1.37 million tonne mass blast in February 1992.This paper records the planning, design, and implementation of the Mammoth mass blast. Geological and geotechnical aspects are summarised, to explain the reasons for such a large blast. Drilling, charging and blast initiation are discussed in detail, to show how standard equipment and products were applied to a unique task.

The post pillar cut and fill stoping method has been adopted by King Island Scheelite for the extraction of the main Dolphin orebody. The orebody is a massive, tabular deposit varying from 10 to 50 metres in thickness, and dipping at approximately 30¦ towards and under the sea bed. The mining method was selected for 1. maintenance of hangingwall support under the sea bed; 2. maximisation of first stage ore extraction; 3. flexibility of mining, allowing maintenance of grade and selective mining around waste bands within the orebody, and 4. compatibility of existing equipment both with stoping and the on-going underground mine development programme. Stope parameters were established on the basis of initial rock stress analyses, and since the undercut phase of mining the stoping programme has been monitored with various types of deformation measuring devices installed in a series of large diameter boreholes.

Under design philosophy, the Hilton concentrator produced lead, zinc and LGM (lead plus zinc) concentrates. The LGM (Iow grade middling) concentrate was produced by combining coarse middling streams from the lead and zinc circuits, regrinding and subsequent flotation. Mineralogical examination of the zinc circuit middling stream prior to regrinding suggested that production of zinc concentrate from the zinc circuit middling stream should be possible by rearranging existing plant equipment. Laboratory testing of samples of plant products, however, showed that regrinding combined wi th the usual reagent suite was nO1 sufficient to produce a zinc concentrate of the required specifications.Examination of the process water highlighted a problem with dissolved salts in the circuit water, which was solved by in-circuit precipitation of the dissolved ions with soda ash. Implementation of the procedure in the concentrator effectively transferred to the zinc concentrate all sphalerite previously recovered to the LGM concentrate.

A process has been developed to recover at least 75% of the 2-naphthol contained in cobalt precipitate produced during the removal of cobalt from electrolytic zinc plant solution. The recovered material is in a form suitable for recycling to precipitate further cobalt from solution. The process consists essentially of two steps. The first involves leaching of cobalt precipitate in 400 g/l sodium hydroxide solution at 95¦C in the presence of an additive. The second step involves treating the filtrate from the leaching stage with sodium sulphide to precipitate cobalt as the sulphide thereby re- generating the sodium hydroxide for recycling. The process is only marginally profitable at present 2-naphthol prices, giving a net return of 20% on a capital investment of $1 200 000. A reaction mechanism is proposed which accounts for the 25% loss of the 2-naphthol in the recovery process.

Production from the Cattle Grid orebody commenced in August, 1974. This followed a recent discovery arising from an extensive exploration programme involving stratigraphic drilling, geochemistry and geophysics. Located some 4 km west of the original copper occurrences at Pernatty Lagoon the discovery was found to contain 4.6 million tonnes of ore averaging 2.4% copper. The ore is a "sandstone copper" type localised near the disconformity between two Precambrian (Adelaidean) stratigraphic units, the Pandurra Formation and the Whyalla Sandstone. The mineralisation roughly follows the interface between these units and occurs in fractures, vugs and along bedding planes. The mineralogical character of the ore is somewhat complex consisting of chalcocite and bornite, with associated chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrite and other less common sulphides. 1. Ventilation characteristics of a three h -nc longwall development panel in a 1/100th tale hydraulic model using dispersion mechanics are the first applications of its Find in ventilation. Dispersion mechanics gives additional and important ventilation parameters such as degree of mixing, bypassing, -ecirculation etc. These are not obtainable the traditional pressure-volume methods. Experimentally, the model work investigates entilation characteristics of different stopping layouts, including leaky stopping,, cut-throughs and return roadway, brattice tyre ventilation and the effects of flow rate reduction on air distribution in the headings. Additionally, a model of methane generation at the face provides results used to calculate the dispersion characteristics in the return airways. It is concluded that the model resui,s -trongly suggest that dispersion mechanics could be applied to mine ventilation surveys to provide quantitative flow pattern data and details of effective dispersion '?_C!,r riro ò `b' eritilat.ing air.

Chlorine as a lixiviant for gold possesses a number of significant chemical and Idnetic advantages over cyanide but because of its corrosive and vaporous nature the method of implementation needs to be significantly modified. At comparable reagent concentrations the dissolution rate for gold in the C12/Cl- systems is some 10 - 100 times that achieved in the 02/CN system. The dissolution rate in the chlorine system is largely a function of the concentration of C12, Cl- and pH. Under conditions of low Cl', (less than 50 g/1), the dissolution rate begins to drop off dramatically over the pH range from 3 - 4. Increasing the level of dissolved chloride ions shifts the pH of this rate reduction to around pH 5 at 100 g/l NaCl, and to around pH 6 at 300 g/l NaCl.

The program, WASTRT 70, was set up specifically to handle the design of tunnel liners and underground structures where inter- action between rock and structure significantly affects the design. It may however be used for any mass/R.C. structure capable of being simulated by straight line elements between modes and with loading restricted to nodes. The analysis system adopts typical elastic/stiffness matrix methods. Two main mass/R.C. design segments are utilized (1) Design of section depth based on maximum required stresses and optimum steel/concrete ratios. (2) Design of reinforcement for a given section depth with concrete stresses given for mass and water code structures. Each design segment covers shear, minimum principal stress on ~ , heavy compression as per code (columns), heavy compression one-face steel (tunnel liners), tension and water code requirements for all moment/thrust/section depth ratios on rectangular sections.

The main parameters are : 1. the size of the deposit, average grades and grade distributions, 2. the operating costs of mining and concentration, 3. the investments in mine and mill, 4. the smelter charge, 5. the price(s) of the metal, 6. the recovery and the grade of the concentrate, 7. the rate of interest, 8. the taxation formulae, 9. the upper limit to rate and the rate interval and 10. the upper and lower limits to cutoff and the cutoff interval. An amount of ore can be mined at various rates while applying various cutoff grades. The copper ore reserves at the Chuquicamata mine were re-estimated during March to June 1994, as part of a comprehensive audit of the mine's overall short- and long-term planning. The basic principles essential to all ore reserve estimates were implemented viz: 1. A detailed study of the geology, in this case particularly of the orientations of structural features of copper mineralisation and the subdivision of the orebody into geologically homogeneous sections, 2. the use of both drillhole and blasthole data sets, 3. statistical and geostatistical analyses of both data sets to model anisotropic spatial structures for all the geologically homogeneous sections, 4. block kriging using both data sets individually; and 5. a comprehensive validation of the block valuations to confirm the absence of global and conditional biases and to quantify the actual improvement achieved in the overall quality of the estimates compared to those executed on earlier techniques.

Discovery of the Vera-Nancy deposit in late-1995 followed 12 years of active exploration in and around the Pajingo Epithermal System, an andesite hosted veinfield covering an area of 150 square kilometres at the northern end of the Devono-Carboniferous Drummond Basin in North Queensland. Early exploration targeted open-pittable resources in the numerous auriferous veins and it was not until 1994 that exploration focus shifted to drilling to depths below about 100 metres from surface, which resulted in the Vera-Nancy discovery. That deeper drilling process is still at a very early stage of coverage of the epithermal system as a whole and substantial potential exists for additional discoveries.Drill-out of Vera-Nancy has to-date established a gold resource in excess of 1.4 million ounces. Mine development is proceeding via a twin decline system with first stoped production scheduled for August 1997.

The main assets of a mining company are its orebodies; the second are the people who find and use them.The graphs in Figure 1 were derived from a paper by Rob Macdonald of Rothschild Australia presented to The AusIMM Centenary Conference in Adelaide earlier this year. They show that the value of the industry on the Australian Stock Exchange halved over the past decade, despite the re-investment of capital equivalent to its full market capitalisation. Why is this so? The average dividend yields for the ASX Mining Index was never above five per cent during that period and barely averaged 2.5 per cent. Why then is $Ai million capital re-investment per employee since 1960 not enough to generate a rate of return to investors better than lousy bank interest? Do the investing public no longer regard our industry's assets to be world class?

The Brolga deposit is a Ni-Co enriched laterite, formed over intensly serpentinised peridotites of the Marlborough Block. Basement lithologies at Brolga consist predominantly of serpentinised dunite, with lesser massive serpentinite shear, gabbro and harzburgite. Investigation of the deposit has defined 17 different varieties of saprolite, ferralite (limonite), and ferricrete. Different combinations of these varieties form three distinct lateritic associations, the Hard, Soft and Dyke Associations. Recognition of key textural and mineralogical features in each association, an understanding of basement geology, and an awareness of current climatic conditions, suggest that: 1. both the Hard and Soft Associations have formed under relatively dry climatic conditions; 2. the Soft Association reflects much poorer groundwater drainage than the Hard Association; and 3. the Dyke Association has formed from a gabbroic basement, and has also been affected by restricted groundwater drainage, caused by poorly permeable marginal serpentinite shears.

This paper introduces a novel roll crusher design, which incorporates non-cylindrical crushing rolls. The use of non-cylindrical rolls enables the crusher to achieve a greater reduction ratio than is possible with conventional roll crushers. Referred to as the NCRC (non-cylindrical roll crusher), the new crusher incorporates two rolls comprised of an alternating arrangement of plane and convex or concave surfaces. The two rolls are complementary and arranged so that when they rotate the convex and concave surfaces of each roll are substantially opposed. With the rolls rotating in opposite directions at the same speed, this arrangement produces a gap between the rolls that remains approximately constant. Discontinuities on the roll surfaces provide improved angles of nip, which increase the probability of larger particles being drawn into the crusher. Initial tests on a scale prototype of the NCRC have indicated that reduction ratios exceeding 10:1 are achievable.

A laboratory study of size segregation is described using a model of a Paul Wurth hopper industrailly employed for blast furnace charg- ing purposes. Experimental charge materials used in the study were glass ballotin.i (1-4mm dia.) and sinter fines (0.25-4mm). The tracer material employed consisted of coloured glass beads. The results of the study show that the discharge stream from a Paul Wurth hopper is characterised by an initial negative segregation followed by a positive segregation and that this segregation pattern is a property of the hopper geometry and the filling conditions. A simple computer model based on experimental tracer concentration results is proposed. The measured segregation results and those predicted by the model show close agreement. Application of the results with special reference to the effect of size segregation on charge permeability in blast furnaces is also included.

On the 17th November, 1964, a new No., 2 lead blast furnace was blown in at Port Pirie. The furnace departed from previous designs by incorporating a centrally located continuous tapper for both lead bullion and slag. The use of a central tapper permitted a simple and effective layout for the handling of both products. Considerable development was necessary to bring the furnace to its present level of efficiency. Units vital to the continu- ous operation were developed to allow quick replacement, thus ensuring high time efficiency under varied operating and maintenance conditions. The furnace was designed with the following objectives in mind, 1. increased crucible life, 2. elimination of oxygen for slag tapping, 3. higher temperature slag for fuming operations-, 4. less operator skill needed, 5. reduced tapping tool consumption, 6. elimination of settler skull and scrap lead, 7. better control of blast air distributi.nn. The patterns of occupational health pro- grammes in mining and metallurgy are discussed in relation to the impact of chemical and phy- sical hazards on the health of workers in these fields. Mining and metallurgy are quite unique in that their history and practice embrace virtually the total spectrum of occupational health problems and hazards as understood today. A panoramic concept of the possibilities would comprise the following fields: 1. The Pneumoconioses or Dust Diseases. 2. Physical stress due to exertion, and exposure to heat and humidity in deep mines. 3. The toxic effects of various metals in the mining of ore. The most obvious are lead, mercury, arsenic and manganese. 4. Diseases associated with mining. These include leptospirosis, ankylostomiasis and mycotic infections of the skin. 5. The Beat Diseases of coal miners working in narrow seams. 6. Illumination problems and miners nystagmus. 7. Geographical and climatic problems
