This paper is intended to continue the subject in the light of recent work, from where it was left at the conclusion of the discussion on the excellent paper by the late Mr. Noel Haszard. The position then obtaining is briefly summarised below:-The points which received general agreement at that time were:-'(1) That the gold occurs, probably in an elemental form, in a state of very fine division in the pyrite.(2) That the aim in roasting of Kalgoorlie flotation concentrates should be to obtain the maximum porosity possible. The gold tellurides were amenable to treatment with either a' solution of high lime and cyanide strength combined with fine grinding, or bybromocyanidation without re-grinding.(3) That a low roasting temperature is essential during the elimination of the first atom of sulphur, if the final calcine is to give a good extraction by cyanidation.(4) Even with the best temperature conditions of roasting then determined, and after a period of cyanidation of the calcines until no further extraction was obtainable, the lowest calcine residues obtainable were equivalent to approximately 1·8 dwts. per long ton, based on an original concentrate of pure pyrite.There was some division of opinion at the time as to whether the temperature of the later stages of roasting was significant, and also as to the reason why the initial roasting temperatures had so marked an effect.

This paper covers only the energy uses of natural resources and does not deal with non- energy uses, which in 1975 were of the order of 10 per cent of the total consumption of energy resources. The United Nations `J' Series of Statistics ex- presses each of the various forms of energy in terms of its coal equivalent in metric tonnes and this basis is followed in this paper. One tonne of black coal (referred to as tce) has been taken as the equivalent of the following. 29 X 109 joules or 27.5 X 106 Btu 0.68 tonnes or 4.8 barrels of crude oil 750 cubic metres or 26.5 X 103 cubic feet of natural gas 1 ò5 to 3.3 tonnes of peat or lignite (world average 2.54; Victorian brown coal 3 0) 8055 kWh (at 3.6 X 106 joules or 3412 Btu per kWh at 100% efficiency) 2660 kWh at 33% efficiency of generation 50 grams of uranium present in natural uranium reactors (see note later under nuclear energy) 0.8 grams natural uranium in breeder reactors Nuclear and hydro electricity are expressed as the coal equivalent required to produce, at 33 per cent efficiency, the same amount of electricity. In other words, electricity produced by these sources is converted to its coal equivalent at the rate of 2660 kWh = 1 tonne coal.

Eimco Great Britain, a division of Baker Mining Equipment Company, was contracted to develop a hardrock tunnelling machine in conjunction with British Coal. The objective: a machine to cut rock up to 170 MPa compressive strength yet retaining the flexibility of roadheader type machines. This flexibility to encompass mobility, wide range of excavation shapes and sizes, simplicity of design and use, compact size, and efficient cutting operation. Current roadheaders operating in hard material are characterized by: 1. Severe machine vibration 2. Bouncing of the boom away from the rock 3. Very high pick wear 4. Inability to sump head in bad floor conditions The reasons for this poor performance can be attributed in part to: 1. High speed of cutting head rotation 2. Inability to hold boom against rock while cutting variable hardness strata. To overcome the problems described, a new articulation method was developed utilizing four hydraulic rams to "lock" the boom in position on one axis and four hydraulic motors to rotate the boom for cutting via a turret arrangement. The slide mounted turret is hydraulically advanced for sumping into the face, independent of the machine base. To transfer cutting forces back to the rock, the machine base is held rigidly in the excavation by floor to roof or side to side rams. A cutting head mounted on the boom rotates at very low speed, but with very high torque.

The Northparkes copper-gold project is being developed in Central Western New South Wales approximately 30 km NNW of the town of Parkes and approximately 350 km west of Newcastle. The project is a joint venture between North Limited (80 per cent) and the Sumitomo Group (20 per cent). North is the manager. The basis of the project is three copper-gold orebodies, the northern two of which are being mined by conventional open cut methods with the third and largest orebody at the southern end of the lease to be mined by block caving. A fourth mineralised body has been identified in the centre of the lease. While further evaluation of this deposit is required it would appear to be amenable to block caving. Oxide caps of gold ore and copper-gold ore over-lie the two northern orebodies. Development commenced with the construction of a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant to treat the oxide gold ore. Construction of a flotation plant to treat oxide copper-gold ore and sulphide copper-gold ore is underway. When full-scale operation is achieved late in 1996 the plant will treat 5.0 million tonnes of ore per year of which 1.1 million tonnes will be open cut ore and 3.9 million tonnes will be block cave ore. In terms of annual ore tonnage the underground mine will be the largest metalliferous mine in New South Wales and the second largest in Australia.

Recent studies carried out to support the development of a strategy for the New Zealand mineral industry by the NZ Minerals Industry Association have included investigations of mineral potential, and the development of scenarios for realising this countryÆs mineral potential by 2010. New economic research is applying a general equilibrium model to quantify the opportunity cost of this potential. The model analyses separately four categories of land (private land and three categories of Crown land) and identifies four distinct mineral classes û precious metals, industrial minerals, coal and aggregate. It investigates the economic effect of the increased availability of mineral resources on the mining industry itself, on other industry sectors and on the NZ economy generally, including its impact on unemployment, GDP and household welfare.The analyses suggest that increases in the level of GDP of between 1.9 per cent and 3.4 per cent may be obtained by utilising New ZealandÆs mineral wealth to varying degrees. The mineral industry sectors are significant beneficiaries under all scenarios; mineral output increases by between two and five times its current level. However, the flow-on effects to the rest of the economy, and to households, are also significant. The analyses show that household income, adjusted for changes in consumer prices, can be expected to increase by between 1.6 per cent and 2.7 per cent. This results largely from increased employment.

The Luzon arc extends for about 900 km from Taiwan to the island of Mindoro (central Philippines); in this area late Tertiary to Recent volcanism is considered to be the result of eastward subduction along the Manila Trench. The arc is composed of five segments, all of which have individual characteristics with respect to tectonic setting and magma chemistry (Defant et al., 1989). From the north to the south these are (Fig. 1): (1) the eastern Coast Ranges of Taiwan and the islands Lan-Hsu and Lu-Tao (Taiwan Segment), (2) the islands off the north coast of Luzon (Babuyan Segment), (3) the Northern Luzon Segment, (4) the Bataan Segment, and (5) the Mindoro Segment. Defant et al. (1988) suggest that the Bataan and Mindoro segments of the arc, both of which are characterized by different isotopic compositions and levels of large ion lithophile element (LILE) enrichment in the lavas, are separated by a 'pull-apart' zone, the Macolod Corridor.We are currently studying the mineralogy and petrochemistry of Late-Miocene to Pliocene volcanism in the Northern Luzon Segment (NLS), which comprises the geographic area of the Cordillera Central. This area has so far received limited attention, inspite of its wealth of porphyry copper, skarn and epithermal gold deposits. In this contribution we report the first results of our study of igneous rocks from the Mankayan Mineral District (MMD) which is located in the centre of the arc segment under consideration.

The Hydrogeological Survay of the bauxite mines in Hungary was establisned 30 years ago. The goal of the HS has been to collect the all available date needed to solve the hydrogeological problems of bauxite mines. The results of activity of the HS have been summarized in the annual reports-. This report is going to present a few methods to evaluate the hydrogeological properties of fissured, karstic rock ie. the evaluation of drilling mud losses, the statistics of core samples evaluated by a special computer program for calculation the porosity and permeability of the rocks. An experimental injection test is presented together with the development of a new portable instrument to get signes of the water table change during the injection test in every two second. It can be proved that the flow around the well may be a transient one if the yield of the injection exceeds a definite one (Figure 2.). It was observed that the permeability calculated from the pumping test date may be 1.2-1.6 time higher than it coming from the injection test. A practical example is presented also how to use the results of the HS for designing the dewatering of a new mine together with an analogous computer model to forecast the yield expectable for making the drift tunnel. A suggestion based on the hydrogeological feature has been done for the dewatering without using electric energy (see Figure 3.-6.).

The Writer's knowledge of this region began in 1912, while he was with the Geological Survey of South Australia, and, investigated the principles governing the occurrence of fresh and saline ground waters in the area then being opened for closer settlement by the railways under construction from Port Lincoln.These field investigatons for water were extensive rather than intensive, but other examinations covered certain mineral aspects. The Writer also has' had the benefit in the preparation of this paper, of later work done by others, as well as of the monumental earlier work in South Australia by the late H. Y. L. Brown.AREAThe area dealt with, approximately 21,000 square miles, lies to the south of the latitude of Port Augusta.TOPOGRAPHYAs a whole the region is one of low relief, but the Olinthus Range, west of Cowell and north of Cleve, reaches an elevation of 2,000ft., while there is als0 a high area west of Port Lincoln and Tumby Bay. At the north end of the region the Gawler Ranges are formed by the dissection of a thick sheet of felspar porphyry extending over two degrees of longitude, by a width of 20 to 70 miles, with fairly uniform maximum elevations of the undissected portions of the order of 1,000 ft. above sea level. THE writer of this paper well realizes that the majority of engineering and metallurgieal works have from time to time evolved mechanical devices which are of great value as regards application in an operating plant.Many of these deviees would not be apparent to an individual making a brief inspection of works such as these, and it is for this reason that the writer proposes to outline a few of the devices which have been evolved by the engineering department of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd.NOVEL METHOD OF MACHINING A SPHERICAL JOINTFig. 1 represents one half of a casing for a ball-joint coupling. In the ordinary methods of boring an external spherical casing, that is with a radius bar attached to the tool rest of a lathe, there is always an error in the bore. It has two flat sides, and this error is inherent in the ordinary orthodox method and cannot be corrected. The engineers of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Currently in Canada there are 15 major mining companies with a minimum of $1 billion in market capitalization or net private value. This group forms the core of an important sector for Canada. The mining sector had gross revenues of about $35 billion in 1988. This compares to a Canadian GDP of $410 billion in 1988. There are at least three different sub-groups within the mining group, each facing the future with very different prospects for the coming years.

Pongkor Gold Mines is one of seven units of production owned by PT Aneka Tambang (State owned mining company). The mine is located in the western part of Java Island, Indonesia. It is in the Bogor District and approximately 110 kilometres to the south of capital Jakarta. The Hermit Islands are situated at 145¦ E 1 30'S in the Bismarck Sea approximately 200km WNW of Manus Island. They are dominated by basalt flows, one of which yielded a K/Ar isotopic date of 3.4 + 0.05Ma. All basalts examined were olivine-bearing, but one sample also contained hornblende. Although many outcrops were weathered, no evidence of pervasive hydrothermal alteration was observed on any islands and non-weathered rocks are petrographically fresh and many retain glass.

Arsenic is classified chemically as a metalloid. That is, it has properties intermediate between those of metals and non-metals. Like non-metals, it combines with many metals to form arsenides (eg arsenopyrite FeAsS, niccolite NiAs, sperrylite PtAs2), but like metals it forms sulphides and oxides (eg realgar AsS, arsenolite As203). Arsenic is distributed widely in the Earth's crust at an average concentration of 1.5 mg/kg and is present in more than 150 minerals.

Pasminco has tested a Valmet ES1 ceramic disc vacuum filter at its Broken Hill concentrators. On lead and, particularly, zinc concentrates at the ZC Mine the filter performed well but on North Mine lead concentrate problems were experienced with deposition on the disc, which resisted both ultrasonic and acid cleaning. A preliminary financial analysis showed that the application of the filter at the ZC concentrator was worth pursuing. Accordingly an ES30 machine has been hired for plant evaluation.

Through partnering with mining customers, DYNO has been able to develop some specific technologies that benefit blasting operations particularly in underground mining. Some of these areas are: 1. Cost allocation and product tracking systems; 2. Borehole video surveys of breakthrough blastholes; 3. Borehole video photography for logging VRM blastholes; 4. Toe-load uphole loading for sublevel cave mining operations; 5. 3D blast modelling for underground ring blasting. This paper outlines these developments in the context of a Canadian underground metalliferous mine.

The ore milled from the Lead Lode of The Zinc Corporation leases consists of a fairly granular mixture of galena, marmatite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and lollingite with a gangue association of calcite, quartz, bustamite, rhodonite, mangan-hedenbergite, garnet, fluorite, mangal1o-calcite and apatite. The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals-tetrahedrite, dyscrasite, and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only. Other metallic and gangue minerals are also present in this complex mineralogical association, but do not influence the milling operations. Fortunately, the silver minerals favour the galena and chalcopyrite as their host minerals, thus facilitating the recovery of both copper and silver in the lead concentrate. The ore from the Lead Lode assays from 14-18% lead; 3·0-4·5 oz. silver per ton, and 9·5-12·0% zinc.A parallel lode, known as the Zinc Lode, is well developed in The Zinc Corporation leases. This lode assays from 6-8% lead, 1·5 oz. silver per ton, 18-25% zinc with a siliceous gangue. The common Lead Lode gangue minerals-ealcite, rhodonite, bustamite-are very rare in present underground exposures. No metallurgical work was done on this ore during the pilot plant operations.The aim in the milling process is to produce: 1. A lead concentrate with the maximum economic recovery of lead, silver, gold, copper and antimony, and minimum zinc content.2. A zinc conc,entrate with the maximum economic recovery of zinc, cadmium, and cobalt, and minimum iron, arsenic and fluorine content.3. A waste residue containing sufficient granular material to be utilized as underground fill.In considering the economics of the milling practice the above three requirements plus consideration of the tariffs submitted by the purchasers of concentrates were the deciding factors in the evolution of the present milling practice.Towards the end of 1924 The Zinc Corporation Limited added to and adapted the old zinc tailings plant for the treatment of 5,000 tons of crude ore per week. This plant, which operated until January, 1936, was in general principles similar to the standard Broken Hill methods of ore concentration, whereby the galena was recovered by the gravity concentration methods of Hgging and tabling with selective flotation concentration of the residual galena and marmatite. One important difference from other Broken Hill plants was that the primary grinding of the jig tailing was performed with flint-loaded mills operating in closed circuit with revolving screens. Early in 1940 the development and sampling programmes in hand on the North and British Sections of North Broken Hill Limited were such as to necessitate the drilling of a large number of drill holes ranging up to about thirty feet in length. On the British Section, one purpose was to test the existence, width, and value of narrow lodes believed, for geological reasons, to occur in the walls of the existing workings. Another object was to definitely disprove the existence of payable shoots of ore in certain largerhodonite and quartz-garnet ("garnet sandstone") pillars which had been formerly left as unpayable.On the North Section, the main purpose of the short holes was to delineate the ore-body boundaries by drilling laterally from drives in ore, and thus enable level layout to be planned in advance of sill stoping. It was also desired to test the walls of stopes in those portions of the mine where the economic limit of mining is not rendered obvious by a clear-cut wall, but should be determined by assay. In these latter cases it was hoped to eliminate "prospecting by stoping," a procedure by which any doubts as to the existence of further good ore behind the low-grade walls were settled by continuing to stope laterally until all chance of such an occurrence was removed.LONG HOLE ROCK DRILLINGFollowing an investigation of recorded instances of similar practice elsewhere it was decided to use the rock drill for a series of trial sample holes. A 3-in. drifter was used. This was selected from those in use underground, and was given a special overhaul; had a new machine been purchased, a 4-in. type would probably have been obtained as being more suited to the work. The rods were H in. hollow round steel with a type "1" Jackrod thread. Couplings were of chrome steel, and were H in. in diameter, and 2 in. long. Jackbits (type "1" thread) in sizes from 2 in. to 4 in., with 1-in. gauge changes, gave a range of nine bit sizes. They were resharpened by hot milling, and were not milled to a definite gauge size.After sharpening, bits were sent underground without sorting into sizes, the drillers selecting the next bit with callipers. In view of the small scale of operations, it was not considered worth while to adopt special measures, such as the cold grinding of bits, which might have given a better product. Later, however, new bits were used exclusively, the idea being to accumulate enough blunt Jackbits to warrant a thorough treatment of the sharpening...
