The Eneabba deposit, located 280 km north of Perth, Western Australia, and 30 km inland (Fig. 1) is one of the most recently developed deposits of mineral sands in the world. The area has been in production since 1974, while the Associated Minerals Consolidated Limited (AMA) operation commenced production in 1976. Total ore reserves of close to 400 million tonnes contain about 40 million tonnes of heavy minerals (proved and probable).

Fines and unnecessarily small rock fragments are created by as many as four identifiable breakage mechanisms which operate close to the charged section or sections of the blasthole. The peak blasthole pressure (Pb) should not exceed that value at which the rock starts to fail in compression. Excessive Pb values can be prevented by carefully selecting:1. the composition, density and/or diameter of the charge, and2. the initiation/priming system.The percentage of fines increases with:1. increases in the charge diameter:blasthole diameter ratio, burden distance, blasthole diameter, effective sub-drilling and size of blast, and2. decreases in blasthole spacing, stemming height and the length:width ratio of the blast block.Decked charges tend to reduce the percentage of fines.Excessive fragmentation is more evident in buffer blasting and sinking cut shots than in blasts fired to a clean free face. Initiation sequences which give effective burdens considerably less than drilled burdens encourage the minimization of fines, as does an inter-row delay time which promotes good progressive relief of burden.The wastage of explosive energy in creating fines is most pronounced where fully-coupled, energetic charges are fired in weak and/or highly porous rocks. This is especially so where forward movement of the strata is impeded by buffer rock, excessive burden distances and/or inadequate inter-row delay times.

During the past two years, a large number of creep tests has been carried out on electrolytic lead, special assay lead and ordinary refined (Port Pirie) lead. Some of these tests have already been reported.1§ In addition, an attempt has been made to estimate the influence of the individual elements present in small traces in Port Pirie lead. The present paper gives the results obtained when small additions are made to "U" lead of the composition shown in Table 1.(which has been used throughout these investigations during the past few years). The additions were silver, antimony, bismuth and zinc. The results of the addition of tellurium have already been communicated. This investigation was intended to run parallel with a similar one using electrolytic lead as a basis and adding one element at a time.Actually, the experiments using "U" lead have got rather ahead of the others. The important point has emerged, however, that the effect of a .given addition may be appreciably influenced by the presence of traces of other elements.In most of these tests, an initial stress of 500lb. per sq. in. has been used. Whilst it is fully appreciated that this stress is higher than those used in practice, it has to be borne in mind that an improvement in creep resistance was *Manuscript received December 11th, 1936.

Underground Mine Drainage may be conveniently divided into two operations:(a) Collecting and transporting drainage water to the pump eastern.(b) Elevating water to the surfacc by pumping.This short paper describes a system which automatically performs operation "a" and which has been developed on the South mine at Broken Hill, under the supervision of the mine foreman, Mr. F. McDonell. Operation "a" does not come under the heading of "subsidiary mine" drainage.SUMMARY(1) All drainage waters are collected by gravity flow into sumps.(2) Automatic control boxes operate syphons which transfer water from level to level to pump cisterns or to feed water service.EQUIPMENTSyphon Control Boar - Constructed of 10 ft. x 2 ft. oregon timber, suitably bolted together and equipped with a Bailey's cistern valve, with copper ball float control, and 12 in. pipcs and fittings forming a syphon (Fig. 1). The Golden Cross low sulfidation epithermal deposit occurs in pervasively altered andesite of the Waipupu Formation and in the Waiharakeke Dacite. The unaltered, post-mineral Whakamoehau Andesite overlies these units. The Empire zone of the Golden Cross deposit contains a stockwork which is currently mined by open pit methods, and a series of veins that are mined underground. Alteration envelops both the underground and open pit mineralisation. The core of the alteration zone contains silicification, as quartz veins, and adularia. Shallow portions of the system contain illite-smectite and a thermally unstable chlorite, tentatively identified as corrensite, which pass downward into illite and chlorite, respectively. Replacement calcite occurs widely throughout the altered zone; pyrite is nearly ubiquitous. This alteration assemblage indicates formation from near-neutral alkali chloride waters. A late, post-mineralisation alteration assemblage of calcite, smectite, illitesmectite, kaolinite and siderite presumably formed from weakly acidic, steam-heated CO2-rich waters.   We have identified eight stages of vein formation: (1) sulfide veins, (2) black veins, (3) massive veins, (4) banded veins, (5) thin white veins, (6) crumbly veins, (7) massive/platy calcite veins, and (8) flattened rhomb calcite veins. Gold mineralisation occurred relatively early in the lifetime of the system, dominantly during 2 through 4. The late calcite veins (7 and 8) and early sulfide veins (1) are barren.

In a previous paper the author showed that silver considerably delayed the recrystallisation of lead after cold work. The effect of antimony on the rate of recrystallisation of distorted lead was studied next, and the experiments performed, and the results obtained, are described in this paper. Electrolytic lead was used as a standard of comparison.It was also used to make the lead antimony alloys.This electrolytic lead contained 0.0005% total impurities.It was prepared from commercial lead by fire refining, followed by electrolysis and finally by vacuum casting. The process was described in the previous paper and the description need not be repeated here. PREPARATION OF LEAD - ANTIMONY ALLOYS.The steps taken to procure pure antimony are outlined in the appendix. To make the lead antimony alloys a mother alloy was prepared thus:-A quantity of the antimony (it was received in the powdered form) was placed in a pyrex glass tube, which was closed at one end. The antimony was washed with hot hydrochloric acid (1: 1), then with more dilute acid, then with distilled water, and finally with absolute alcohol; it was dried by warming and evacu,ating the tube. The long-term outlook Tor Australla's traditional mining products is for flat demand and continuing low prices. This has come about because of three far-reaching changes since earlier boom days: 1. Continuing declines in intensity of usage of basic mine products; 2. The failure of newer western and third world developing countries to realise growth expectations; and 3. Continued production pressure from third world countries (and first-world primary producers) in an effort to earn foreign exchange and rectify trade balances. These trends have led to a general situation of excess supply and weak demand. In this environment, the prerequisites for survival in the mining sector are first-class mines, modern and efficient production methods, low unit costs, aggressive marketing, and products with reasonable operating margins. Many of Australia's mines meet these prerequisites. Following the A$ depreciation and widespread unit cost reductions, most of these mines will be moderately profitable at current depressed commodity prices. They are well placed to benefit from price rises if these eventuate. A new generation of mines is concentrating on a more profitable product range (gold, diamonds, uranium, mineral sands). Australia's balance of trade remains firmly dependent on the primary mining and agricultural industries (Fig. 1). Despite optimistic talk of high-tech developments, tourism and a resurgence of manufacturing, these will remain a small component of Australia's export structure.

There is still a huge challenge in efficiently recovering the arsenides minerals that are largely concentrated in the Platreef Bushveld Complex which constitutes about 21 per cent of the platinum group minerals (PGMs). Therefore new collectors are required to improve the recovery separation of hard to float minerals, in particular sperrylite. The triazine modifications are promising reagents for mineral flotation and have not been given much attention in minerals processing. The adsorption of sodium 2,6-dithio-4-butylamino-1,3,5-triazine (SDTBAT), sodium 2,6- ditrithiocarbonate-4-butylamino-1,3,5-triazine (SDTTCBAT) and sodium normal butyl xanthate (SNBX) on sperrylite (100) surface were performed to identify a well performing collector molecule. We observed that the triazine collectors preferred to bridge on surface As and Pt atoms through the S atoms. We found that the adsorption energies were in the order: SDTTCBAT > SDTBAT > SNBX, indicating that the SDTTCBAT had strong exothermic adsorption on sperrylite and pyrite. These results showed that the ditrithiocarbamate had a great influence in the adsorption strength on the sperrylite surface. Importantly it was found that the triazine collector had stronger adsorption than the xanthate, which portrayed a promising replacement of xanthate collector. These results paved a way for design of novel collector for sperrylite and other chalcogenide minerals to improve their recovery.

The art of flotation may be divided into two distinct branches, namely:-1. Collective flotation.2. Selective flotation.(1) Collective flotation is applied when all the valuable minerals in an ore are required in one concentrate, leaving ,only gangue minerals in the tailing. The method is applicable, for instance, to such ores as auriferous copper sulphides associated with gangue minerals only, or to silver lead ores low enough in zinc and other valuable minerals.(2) Selective flotation is applied when there are present in an ore two or more valuable sulphides, which cannot be subsequently efficiently treated unless they are separated from one another as well as from the gangue. For example, a silver-Iead-zinc ore, or a copper-gold-iron ore; where the iron is not required with the copper gold concentrate.In order to make these operations practicable chemical reagents have been developed, having power to exert definite actions on the various minerals when brought into contact with them in a water pulp.COLLECTIVE FLOTATION.In order to bring about collective flotation it is generally necessary to add to the pulp a frothing agent and an activator or activators for all the minerals which it is desired to float.SELECTIVE FLOTATION.The object of selective flotation is to activate the mineral which is to be floated, and at the same time to prevent all other minerals from floating.

The colliery is owned by the BHP Collieries Proprietary Ltd., the principal shareholders being the Broken Hill Pty. Company Ltd. and Hebburn Limited.It is situated due west of Newcastle and 6 south-east of Cessnock, N.S.W., and is conneeted by 36 miles of railway to the port of Neweastle. Of this mileage, 3 miles are owned by the Company, 3 by Hebburn Limited, 9 by the South Maitland Railways Ltd., and 21miles by the Government Railways.The seam worked is known as the Main Greta Seam of the Greta Coal Measures and is on the southern slope of the Lochinvar anticline.At the shaft, the seam is 1190 ft. below the surface, and the section of the coal measures is:-Upper or Main Seam, . 24 ft. 0 in.Conglomerate and shale 70 ft. 0 in.'Middle Seam 8 in.Conglomerate 25 ft. 0 in,Bottom Seam 1 ft. 2 in.These lie between two marine measures, and are the lower coal series of the permo-carboniferous period.Only the upper seam is workable in this area, the lower seams being too thin for eompetitive working. The section of the workable seam at the shafts is as shown on Fig. 1.Unfortunately, only the lower 12 ft. 5 in. of the seam is saleable.

THE power requirements of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company at Queenstown, Tasmania, have, since the inception of smelting operations in June, 1,,896, been derived continuously from the extensive forests in the watershed of the Queen River, adjacent to -the works, the firewood being of good quality, mainly composed of myrtle or beech (Fagus Ounninghami), eucalypts, and manuka (Leptospermum ericoides).The country is very rugged and mountainous, indented by numerous ravines and gullies, and intersected by many creeks, which are subject to periodical floods, under the influence of a heavy and persistent rainfall. The areas so far exploited aggregate a total of about 42 sq. 'miles, and this denuded country gives promise of ultimately becoming very valuable pastoral ground for cattle-raising. The tonnage of wood yielded per acre varies from 40 to 100 tons on stack measurement of 80 cub. ft. per ton, 60 tons per acre being considered a good average yield. The gross amount of firewood handled during the past 13 years approximates 1,200,000 tons, the greater portion of which has been obtained by ordinary tramming methods. The company's main line of railway, 3-ft. 6-in. gauge, has served as a trunk line for all supplies derived from the Queen River valley, south of the reduction works, while the northern and western areas have been exploited by means of...

A laminar-flow furnace technique was used to study the combustion of 37-53 µm size fraction of Woodlawn copper concentrate containing 7.4 per cent zinc, 5.0 per cent lead and 22.5 per cent copper. Factors studied included the effect of time, temperature and the distribution of volatile elements between the panicles and the fume. Air was used for most of the work but a few tests were carried out using 1 per cent oxygen in nitrogen. Chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron and optical microscopy of polished sections were used to characterize the reaction products.When the concentrate was combusted at low temperatures (800-900°C), the fume was rich in lead. At higher temperatures, this was diluled by increasing amounts of zinc and copper. 70 per cent of the zinc, 60 per cent of the lead and 40 per cent of the copper were found in the fume after oxidation at 1400°C. Lead, zinc and copper were present in the fume as anglesite (PbSO4), zincite (ZnO) and cuprite (Cu2O) respectively. The major phases present in the panicles were magnetite (Fe3O4) and/or cuprospinel (CuFe2O4), with some zincite and cuprite.Elemental copper was found in the particles oxidized in 1 per cent oxygen. The heterogeneous reactions of carbonaceous materials with oxidising gases are basic to all combustion phenomena and to many gasification processes. The carbon- carbon dioxide reaction at elevated temperatures (Reactivity) plays important roles in many metallurgical operations like iron blast furnace and ferro-alloys smeltings, zinc and lead smelting, alumina reduction, cupola operation and direct reduction processes. The stoichiometry but not the mechanism of the reaction between CO2 and carbon is represented by the equation (Boudouard reaction) CO2 + C 2CO (1) This reaction is more complex than that between carbon monoxide and metal oxides, which involves essentially a transfer of oxygen from the oxide to carbon monoxide to generate carbon dioxide without any change in gas volume, whereas the volume of the product gas of Equation (1) is twice that of the reactant gas. In the present paper an attempt has been made to review critically the reactivity measurements of various carbonaceous materials in carbon dioxide atmosphere. Steps in C-CO2 reactions, surface reaction mechanism, role of mass transfer on reaction kinetics, dynamic oxygen exchange reaction and rate equations and rate controlling steps are discussed. Various methods of reactivity measurements with their pros and cons are also presented. Effects of pertinent process variables on the reactivity of carbon are also described in detail.

The hydro-chlorination of Fe2O3 and Fe304 has been investigated in the range 850-950¦C in order to elucidate the role of iron in the segregation process for nickeliferous laterites. The kinetics of Fe203 chlorination using 20% HC1 - 80% N2 gas mixtures is consistent with a single-stage structure control model, whereas Fe3O 4 exhibits a two-stage reaction mechanism. Oxygen potential measurements using a CSZ probe located above the bed and X-ray powder diffraction results confirm the proposed reaction scheme. When a serpentine nickeliferous laterite (1.03% Ni - 11.7% Fe) was chlorinated at 900¦C with a 20% HCl - 80% N2 gas mixture it was found that the iron oxide in the ore was extracted in a similar manner to the synthetic iron oxides. Also, it was found that the nickel extraction from the ore paralleled that of the iron and the tests indicated that for the major part of the extraction, the solid nickel species were in equilibrium with the gas phase. The recovery of nickel from laterite ores by the segregation process has been investigated by a number of workers and several extensive reviews of the literature associated with this field have been published (Iwasaki, 1972; Canterford, 1975; Wright, 1973).

The Haveluck gold deposit, located 2.5km north of Meekatharra, contained 1,284,000 tonnes at an average grade of 1.8 g/t gold of drill delineated proved and probable ore prior to commencement of production. Following successful laboratory and pilot scale testing a decision was made to establish a 300,000 tonnes per year heap leaching operation. The ore, crushed to minus 100mm was stacked on an impermeable membrane and irrigated with a dilute cyanide solution. Gold was recovered from the resulting pregnant solutions by adsorption onto activated carbon and gold bullion produced in a modified Zadra process desorption plant. From the commencement of mining it was obvious that a high percentage of fine material was being produced which would adversely affect the percolation of the cyanide solution-through the leach heaps. A screening plant was incorporated into the crushing circuit which provided an oversize product satisfactory for heap leaching and an undersize for carbon-in-pulp treatment. Plant design provided for the slurrying of minus 0.8mm ore before feeding to the pachuca tanks. Initial practice was to use four tanks for gold dissolution and two for carbon contact. Vibrating screens were used through- out for the carbon-ore separation and the loaded carbon was stripped in the existing desorption plant.

THE following description of the surface plant of the Great Fitzroy Mines is to be understood as having been compiled by a mechanical engineer, who concerns himself more with the various appliances used, their correct construction to enable them to accomplish their prescribed work, and the production and transmission of the power required to operate them, than with the reasons for the physical and chemical processes which those appliances are called upon to assist in carrying out. Hence the metallurgist will not find herein more than the skeleton of the organism, which perhaps he would wish to be clothed with the detailed description of the substances undergoing treatment, in their various combinations, at all stages, and the results attained in separating the valuable constituents from the worthless. So, also, no details will be found of the methods employed by the management for. the purpose of determining by sampling and assaying the nature of the various products obtained.GENERALThe ore being worked at the Great Fitzroy Mine is divided into two classes :-1. Ore that requires concentration before smelting.2. Ore that can be smelted direct.Flow-sheet (Fig. 1) shows in outline the process of treatment to which ore of the first class is subjected, and the writer will endeavour to fill in that outline with some details of the appliances used.

THOSE who have had occ.asion to sample a mine not infrequently find that it is impossible to take their sample cuts at regular distances apart, owing to the ground being close timbered, a stope having been taken out, or some other cause. When such is the case a tedious calculation becomes necessary in order to obtain an accurate result. A conscientious man will make the tedious calculation, but one who is inclined to be lazy, or who does not recognize the importance of accuracy, or has not the time, may be satisfied with either the arithmetical or weighted arithmetical mean result.There are two main systems of taking samples when the cuts are taken-(l) at equal distances, (2) at unequal distances. When the samples are out at equal distances apart there are three methods of computing the assay value :-1 (a) By Arithmetical Mean. The sum of the values and sum of the widths are each divided by the total number of samples, in order to obtain the value and width respectively, no allowance being made for the relative widths arid values. The result isabsolutely inaccurate, and should never be used under any circumstances.1 (b) By Geometrical Mean. The assay widths ie, feet %, feet oz, inch dwt, &c, are added together and the sum of these is divided by the sum of the widths.

This present paper deals with the fundamental study of the separation of fine cassiterite and quartz by liquid-liquid extraction using iso-octane as an oil phase, dodecylamine acetate (DAA) as a collector, and sodium chloride as a depressant. With regard to the distribution of fine cassiterite and quartz between oil and aqueous phases, the effect of DAA has been investigated in terms of pH, DAA and NaCl concentrations, zeta potential, and adsorption density. From the results of the experimental work, a maximum recovery of cassiterite in the oil phase was obtained with pH around 6.0, DAA concentration of 1.0 x 10-5 mole/litre, and NaCl addition of 0.1 mole/litre. In these conditions of liquid-liquid extraction, most of the fine quartz remained in the aqueous phase. Thus it was found that NaCI was an effective depressant for fine quartz under optimum conditions. A series of separation tests by liquid-liquid extraction was then conducted for the mixed samples (6.0 per cent Sn) of cassiterite and quartz. By a single separating process, the per cent of recovery of cassiterite in the oil phase was about 92 per cent with a grade of 27 per cent Sn. The same results could also be obtained by using kerosene in place of iso-octane as the oil phase.

BHP is currently undertaking research into plasma are metallurgical processing at the Central Research Laboratories (CRL), Shortland. The use of high intensity plasma arcs for melting and smelting has a number of advantages, including; the ability to control atmosphere and furnace operating conditions, total enclosure, high temperatures, versatility, and low in-process inventory in a compact system. The intensive conditions, achievable in a plasma furnace system, make it particularly useful for the smelting and melting of difficult-to-treat materials, such as ore and metallic fines and refractory ores. Two transferred arc plasma smelting furnaces have been set up at CRL; a 100kg furnace is used for small scale melting and smelting studies and a 1 tonne furnace for pilot scale plasma processing studies and equipment development. Power is supplied by a 1MW GEC thyristor DC power supply. A 220kW DC power supply is available for "off site" pilot process trials and demonstrations, and a 150kW non-transfered are plasma torch is also available for other studies. The facility has been designed to allow maximum flexibility in researching and developing applications in metallurgical processing and transferring developed technology to company operations. The objectives behind the development of the facility, details of the facility and an outline of current research areas will be Discussed.
