Hindered settling devices (teeter bed, up-current) are widely used in the mining industry to classify mineral streams into various size fractions and to separate minerals. In the coal industry these devices are extremely successful in separating coal of low densities from shale and pyrite. In the beach sand and in the iron ore industry, this equipment is used to beneficiate minerals either as stand alone units or lately as classifiers in spiral circuits. The challenge that these applications give to metallurgists is to be able to simulate the equipment by using mathematical models with or without the aid of small bench scale tests. In any green fields and many brownfields projects, limited amounts of samples make pilot plant tests difficult. Although there are mathematical approaches available, the accuracy is of such a nature that it can not be used for design purposes. This refers to the use of StrokeÆs law, NewtonÆs and the so called intermediate law as is widely published. Research done by the author indicates that in most applications none of the above laws apply. Using the original data as published by Perry and Chilton (Chemical Engineering Handbook, pp 5-64, 1973) and re-plotting it indicates that the settling velocity of particles is a function of (particle diameter)n where n varies between 1.2 and 1.6 which is different from that predicted by the intermediate law that suggests that n = 1.18. Another way of describing the relationship between the drag force and the Reynolds number is done by iterating between settling velocity and the Reynolds number. This needs more computer time but the accuracy obtained from this does add value to simulations. A small but simple test is suggested to determine the settling velocity of particles to enable metallurgists to determine variations from the theoretical calculations to determine the influence of viscosity and particle shape.

In their description of the post-mine leaching of galena and marmatite at Broken Hill, Messrs. Garretty and Blanchard1 find themselves unable to account satisfactorily for the fact that the more usual order of solubility of these two minerals is here reversed, and that the galena is leached more rapidly than the marmatite. An explanation of this somewhat unusual phenomena is perhaps provided by the recent work of Garrels.2 Garrels showed that the presence of Cl' ions in Pb-Zn solutions, in concentrations in excess of 0·1 N, rendered the zinc less soluble than the lead. It seems possible that Cl' ions may be present in the underground waters of the North Broken Hill Mine in sufficient concentration to cause such reversal in the relative solubility of the lead and zinc sulphides.Thus the analysis of "water believed to be free from contamination by mine drainage" given by Messrs. Garretty and Blanchard (p. 158 of their paper) is as follows:Total solids in solution 878 grains per gallon...164 grams of Cl per gallon is equivalent to 2· 3394 grams of Cl' per litre, which is equivalent to 0066 N.This concentration is approaching a value sufficient to cause a reversal of the relative solubility of zinc and lead salts; and it seems probable that there will be parts of the ore-body where locally the Cl' concentration will greatly exceed this figure. At such points the lead salts would be more soluble than the zinc salts, so that the galena would be leached more rapidly than the marmatite. With the dilution of such Cl'-rich waters with water containing less Cl', the Cl' concentration would fall below 0·1 N, and the lead would be reprecipitated, while the zinc would stay in solution, as, for example, in the water analysis quoted. The selection of the best comminution circuit for the preparation of concentration feed is a compromise based on economics, energy efficiency, labour costs, steel consumption, availability and other factors specific to each case. It is postulated that the selection must be a choice of one of the eight basic comminution circuits which can be divided into two basic groups, (1) autogenous or semi-autogenous primary mills with or without a secondary grinding stage and (2) fine crushing usually in cone crushers followed by a rod mill-ball mill circuit or a single stage ball mill circuit. The accuracy of selection may be improved by pilot plant and laboratory tests which are described in this paper. For (1) above, testing includes media competency tests with standard impact crushing, grindability and abrasion tests followed by pilot plant tests. For (2) above, bench scale crushability, grindability and abrasion testing is available. It is suggested that, through these tests, it should be possible to eliminate all but one in each group of basic comminution circuits. Then engineering and economic studies should lead to the best comminution circuit for the specific requirement.

The cave propagation behaviour of a jointed rock mass is strongly governed by the unique nature of joints and discontinuities, together with the intact strength of rock bridges that make up the rock fabric. A discrete finite difference (DFD) modelling technique has been developed to allow for the detailed consideration of the rock mass structural fabric at many scales and through many different stress paths that can be used for complex mine-scale analysis. The DFD methodology uses interfaces to explicitly represent large-scale structures and ubiquitous joints embedded within the simulated rock mass matrix to characterise intermediate structures. Through simulated testing of DFD materials, properties such as strength anisotropy and scale effects can be obtained. The Gekko InLine Pressure Jig (IPJ) was unleashed on the World gravity separation market in 1996 and has since sold over 150 units in applications including tin, diamonds, silver, coal, garnet and gold. During the past twelve years the knowledgebase of the best applications and capabilities of the IPJ has greatly increased. Improvements to the original IPJ design have included engineered ceramic ragging in specific gravities from 1.6 to 5.0, full automation and improved designs of feed presentation and tailings and concentrate handling systems. The IPJ has been found to be able to handle a wide feed size range and recover mineral at liberation size without significant addition of water to the mass balance. Test work carried out during full-scale operation of the IPJ has shown the IPJ can recover diamonds down to 0.5 mm, sulfides down to 0.3 mm and gold down to 0.1 mm which greatly expands its application in the mineral processing industry. A significant volume of data now supports the symbiotic benefits of an IPJ and flotation circuit combination to pre-concentrate an ore and minimise downstream processing requirements.

Blasts should be designed so as to maximise the percentage of charges which shoot to a free face (Le, to a pronounced rock/air interface).Free faces should be rough, parallel and reasonably near to blastholes and, very importantly, concavely·biplanar relative to the charges (see Fig. 6b). The presence of biplanar free faces requires that each charge fragments and detaches its quota of the burden rock before the detonation of:1. later-firing adjacent charges in single-row blasts, and2. dependent charges in multi-row blasts.In multi-row blasts, biplanar faces are best achieved:1. by drilling blastholes on equilateral triangular grids,2. by selecting a VI, V2 or V3 initiation sequence, and3. by using down-the-hole delays.Biplanar faces start to be created only when the conventional value of effective blasthole spacing/effective burden distance (Se/Be) increases beyond about 2.4. Values of Se/Be less than about 2.4 result in planar free faces. Where biplanar faces are created, conventional values of Se/Be are invalid and appreciably greater than real values of Se/Be.

Study on Basic Theory of the Grain Settlement in Fluidised Bed This paper takes thick goal grains (less than 1.5 cm) as research object. According to different densities and particle sizes, thick goal grains are divided into 20 kinds of narrow density and narrow size level average grains. Free settling and hindered settling tests are respectively carried out in ?100 fluidised bed thick goal separators. Hindered settlement includes hindered settling velocity test and measurements of suspension density. Results show follows. (1) Fluid state in separator belongs to transition region. Alien's law is the appropriate formula of thick coal particles free settlement terminal velocity. (2) The main factors affecting hindered settling velocity are the number of solid particles in medium and the structure feature of the particle group. The bigger volume fractions of solids ? is, the smaller decreasing velocity coefficient of particle hindered settlement ¯ becomes. In the organism from bottom to top, density of suspended particles in fluidised bed gradually decreases, but near the top of the suspended particles, the density increased slightly. With increase of density and size, suspension density reducing extent increases from bottom to top of separators.

Sampling and analyses of deep waters from Wairakei and Rotokawa geothermal systems indicate a wide range of precious metal concentrations (<0.1 to 23 ppb Au; 6 to 2400 ppb Ag), suggesting that eastern ôandesiticö TVZ geothermal systems (eg Rotokawa) have higher aqueous gold and silver than western ôbasalticö geothermal systems (eg Wairakei); this interpretation is consistent with known occurrences of high grade precipitates in wells from eastern systems. The fact that the deep waters are undersaturated in gold further suggests that the aqueous gold concentrations of deep waters are limited by metal availability. The flux of gold for the two systems ranges from ~1 to 50 kg Au/yr, and the flux of silver ranges from 65 to 6900 kg Ag/yr. At Rotokawa, it only takes ~600 years to flux one million oz of Au and >100 million oz of Ag. The supply of hydrothermal gold and silver is obviously important during genesis of an epithermal deposit, but ore formation also depends on the existence of a suitable ôtrapö that efficiently extracts metal from solution in a small volume of rock. Such traps seem to have been poorly developed until geothermal drilling in the TVZ.

In this paper, a method for extracting and refining metallic molybdenum using low-temperature ZnCl2- NaCl-KCl molten salt was proposed. The electrochemical behaviour of molybdenum ions in ZnCl2- NaCl-KCl molten salt was investigated in detail, and pure metallic molybdenum was collected on the cathode. The reduction and diffusion processes of Mo(V) ions in ZnCl2-NaCl-KCl molten salt were determined through a series of electrochemical methods. The diffusion coefficients and nucleation modes of Mo(V) ions were also studied, and electrolysis was conducted for a prolonged period at a constant current density. The results indicated that the electrode reduction of Mo(V) ions in ZnCl2- NaCl-KCl molten salt proceeds through a three-step reaction: Mo(V) → Mo(IV) → Mo(III) → Mo at 250°C. The Mo(V) → Mo(IV) reaction was reversible and diffusion-controlled, with a Mo(V) diffusion coefficient of 6.02 × 10-6 cm2 s-1. Additionally, the nucleation mode of Mo(V) ions was instantaneous nucleation. The products electro-deposited were confirmed of metallic molybdenum with a particle size of less than 1 μm.

Three principal features of the ore at Captain's Flat, New South Wales, tend to complicate concentration of the valuable minerals, these being:1. The ore occurs in three more or less separate bodies which vary in texture and mineral ratios. Mining of constant proportions of the three sections, or adequate blending of the ore, is not fully effective, and consequently the flotation section is subjected to feedof varying texture.2. The mineral association in the heavily pyritic ore is extremely intimate. Composite particles exist even at 20 micron sizeI, and probably finer.3. The copper content of the ore averages_about 0,6%, which is high enough to justify recovery of the chalcopyrite in a separate concentrate. A review of the metallurgical history of the mine shows that this feature has been the cause of the several major changes in flowsheet of the flotation section since the commencement of milling.METALLURGICAL HISTORYThe mine started production in January 1939, at the rate of 250 tons per day of sulphide ore, assaying 0·68% Cu, 6·52% Pb, 10·8% Zn, and about 1 dwt. Au and 2 oz. Ag per ton.

The pellet qualities primarily depend upon the thermal profile and gaseous environment during induration. During the induration of the pellet, it undergoes physical as well as chemical changes. Physical changes are mostly due to sintering and chemical changes are due to carbon burning inside the pellet. The effect of carbon on sintering is investigated on a single pellet scale using an optical dilatometer. Sintering is a complex process that involves transportation through various mechanisms. Sintering is quantified in terms of sintering ratio and the kinetic parameter, exponent ‘n’, under isothermal conditions is deduced using the power law equation. The value of n can be used to estimate the sintering mechanism at different isothermal temperatures. Also, the activation energy is calculated using the empirical Arrhenius equation. The activation energy of 0 per cent coke and 1 per cent coke-containing pellets are 531.0 kJ/mole and 552.6 kJ/mole respectively. The order of magnitude of activation energy suggests the same mechanism in both cases. Although the mechanism of sintering is the same, 1 per cent coke-containing pellet sinters more at any isothermal temperature.

Experimental work is described in which extremely dilute aurocyanide liquors are treated with novel surface-active complexing agents to produce a hydrophobic aurocyanide species. Subsequent aeration of these liquors causes accumulation of such species at the air-water interface and the aurocyanide complex is transferred to a froth concentrate. A detailed performance assessment of this process is made and this knowledge used in the design of a pilot plant facility. Early results indicate the feasibility of the selective recovery of aurocyanide ions from reclaimed residue dam water (approximately 0.2ppm Au) with upgrade ratios of the order 180:1. A further study was made applying ion flotation to the recovery of gold from a carbon-in-pulp (CIL) feed liquor (approximately 1.0ppm Au). The probable economics of this process compared to conventional CIL processing is also described. Successful development of countercurrent ion flotation for concentrating solids-free gold solutions may offer a lower cost alternative to existing gold ore processing technologies, or in more secondary applications such as concentrating dilute gold solutions or heap leach runoff. The technology may also have more generalised applications to other heavy metal process- Ing.

The Ok Tedi Project has been planned as a selective mining operation since the Feasibility Study. The nature of the orebody, and the need to 'stage' the infrastructure buildup meant that initially the mill would process gol ore using a leach-CIP process, followed by parallel leaching of gold ore and flotation of copper ore, and finally all flotation of copper ore. Cutoff grades were applied to gold and copper ore of 1.0-1.3 g/t Au and 0.4-0.3% Tot. Cu. Since startup, unpredicted occurrences of sulphide copper and, to a Lesser extent, carbonaceous material, has necessitated significant additional short term drilling (other than at grade boundaries), and shift grade control in the pit to control contaminant levels. Remodelling of the orebody based on the most up to date variography and geological interpretation has had a significant impact on the reserves, and thus the whole project development strategy; necessitating the earlier processing of copper ores, and preflotation of the gold ore.This paper discusses some of these points in detail, and in particular highlights how unforseen geological occurrences coupled with processing restrictions can have significant impacts on ore reserves and the mine development schedule.

Epithermal vein and breccia hosted Au mineralisation at the Kerimenge prospect, in the Wau district, Papua New Guinea, occurs within a block of multiply fractured dacite porphyry of Pliocene age, and is localised on intersecting regional fault structures, marginal to the eroded vent of a Late Pliocene-Pleistocene maar volcano (diatreme).Au mineralisation is primarily controlled by the steeply dipping Kerimenge Fault zone, which hosts a basal zone of silicified breccias,transitional laterally and vertically to networks of fracture controlled veins.Early quartz+pyrite veins, deposited from CO2 rich, NaCl saturated, boiling fluids pre-date the main phase of Au mineralisation. Four stages of Au bearing vein mineralisation have beenrecognised. Quartz+sulphide veins (stage 1) and partially coeval quartz+sulphide+carbonate+ adularia veins (stage 2) occur marginal to silicified breccias, and are associated with quartz+sericite+pyrite wallrock alteration. Similar depositional conditions prevailed for stage 1 and stage 2 mineralisation. Mineralising fluids underwent two stage boiling at temperatures of 145 to 2300 C. Boiling resulted in the loss of approximately 3 wt.% CO to the vapour phase. 2 Fluid salinity was probably I wt.% NaCl or less.

The ore used in this test program was a composite sample from Waihi, New Zealand containing 2.7 g/t gold and 36 g/t silver. From the testwork it was found that a high concentration of sodium cyanide (0.1 per cent) was necessary to ensure a high recovery of both gold and silver. There appeared little chance for either differential leaching or adsorption of gold and silver. The addition of bentonite clay decreased the rates of gold and silver dissolution. The addition of 50 g/1 NaCI had little influence on the rate of silver extraction. The addition of 5 g/l carbon gave adsorptions of 70 per cent of the gold and 35 per cent of the silver, indicating the possible presence of base metal cyanides in solution. The addition of excess sodium sulphide only precipitated 70 per cent of the silver in solution, adding further evidence to the presence of base metal sulphides. The production of separate silver and gold products was not possible by either preferential leaching, preferential adsorption of gold on carbon or preferential precipitation of silver.

The accurate determination of trace level gold in ores, metallurgical samples and process solutions is required because of the value of gold, the efficiency of the cyanide leach process and because of the high gold recovery from these cyanide solutions. It is thus necessary to routinely analyse geological and metallurgical samples with gold concentrations of 3 g tonne (ug g- 1ppm) and process solutions with a gold concentration of 0.01 mgL 1 (ppm) preferably with sufficient accuracy to quote at least two significant figures. Several techniques have been reviewed for their suitability for the routine gold analysis of these samples which also contain signif- icant concentrations of other ions. The classic fire assay technique has achieved the respect and confidence of mining personnel because of the results achieved by very experienced assayers. Other extraction and concentration techniques have now been shown to be equally effective. The use of instrumental analytical techniques particularly atomic absorption spectrometry have shown that cheaper procedures, which are as reliable, are now available to gold producers for the routine analysis required to maintain an efficient gold recovery process.

To date, few studies have been made regarding the energy requirements of the Australian mining and mineral processing industries. This paper indicates that these industries use a substantial proportion of the total Australian energy input (32.7% in 1971-72 and 36.10% in 1974-75). With the growth orientation of these industries, this input is likely to increase. Data shows that mining energy requirementE varied from 4.22% (of total Australian energy requirements) in 1971-72 to 4.16% in 1974-75. Energy requirements for the total mineral processing industries increased from 28.49% to 31.93% for the same period. The total estimated primary energy input varied from 22.56% to 25.2%, whilst indirect energy use, in the form of electricity increased from 10.16% to 10.66%; in the same period. Analysis of primary energy input data within the processing industries (1973/4) showed that the Iron and Steel Industry consumed 15.03% of the Australian total consumption, Non-Ferrous metals, 5.43%, Cement, 1.64%, and Refractories, 1.59%. Since pyrite is a semiconductor, the relationship between the leaching rate and the semiconducting properties is of interest. In order to investigate this relationship, a pyrite concentrate (95% FeS2) was oxidized at 90¦C (363 K) in an acid solution containing 100 g/dm3 H2SO4 and 1.0 to 25.1 g/dm3 total Fe. The suspension potential (Pt vs. SCE) was maintained at the desired values, within the range 0.40 to 0.70 V, by controlled additions of a KMn04 solution during leaching. The results were analyzed using a simplified kinetic expression. The rate constant was independent of the Fe concentration, while it increased with suspension potential. Partly oxidized samples were then prepared at varying fractions of reaction. After removing the elemental sulphur formed, they underwent thermoelectric power measurements using a packed bed lying in a temperature gradient. The value of thermo- electric power increased from about 0 to 30 pV/K in the early stages of oxidation. The results obtained are compared with those for chalco- pyrite reported in a previous paper.
