Autogenous grinding, broadly defined as the self-comminution of ore in a cylindrical tumbling mill without using auxiliary grinding media, was first applied in the early 1930s in the so-called Hadsel mills (Hardinge, 1955) as seen in [Fig. 1], mainly used in gold mines on the US West Coast. A number of these mills were built in sizes of 6.1 to 7.3 m (20 to 24 ft) in diameter and 1.5 to 1.8 m (5 to 6 ft) in length but were later abandoned because of operating and maintenance problems. Further development of autogenous grinding led to the Hardinge wet grinding mill, the Aerofall dry grinding mill, and others. A tabulation of all known autogenous and semiautogenous installations around the world was sent recently to the authors by G. J. Kushner of Koppers Metal Processing Division. In the size range of 7.3 to 9.8 m (24 to 32 ft) in diameter, it lists a total of thirty mills used in the processing of copper ores. An additional 120 units are listed in the same size range for the processing of iron ores and other minerals. The largest mills in existence are 11.1-m-diam X 4.6-m-long (36-ft-diam X 15-ft-long) mills in Minnesota, powered by 8950 kW (12,000 hp) motors and used in taconite beneficiation. It is indicative of the phenomenal growth of this technology that none of the above 150 mills was in operation prior to 1964. Grinding rates in autogenous mills are very sensitive to variations in ore breakage characteristics and even with fairly constant ore type can exhibit large fluctuations in throughput. Autogenous grinding also depends on availability of a fraction of the ore to be ground in the form of "competent" rock which can withstand to a certain degree the tumbling and impact action within the mill. If the ore is uniformly "soft", it will soon be crushed into small size particles and further grinding, which depends on the existence of large size rocks in the mill, becomes impossible. This apparently is the case with most copper ores, as discussed by Bachman, Last and Nabbs (1970) who described pilot testing of a large number of ore samples from Kennecott 's Chino Mines. Under circumstances where autogenous grinding is impractical, it is possible to realize most of its benefits by utilizing large grinding balls in place of the "competent" rock and practice what has become known in the mining industry as semiautogenous grinding. In semiautogenous grinding (SAG), a grate discharge tumbling mill is fed the product of a primary crusher or run-of-mine rock. Forged steel or alloy grinding balls, in proportions ranging from 3.10% of the total volume in the mill, are used to complement the self-grinding ability of the ore. Semiautogenous circuits can be either designed for single-stage closed-circuit grinding which produces a final product for recovery processes, or for two-stage operation in which the SAG mill product is fed to a second stage of grinding in a conventional ball mill.

In the special number of the magazine Ocl und Kohle (Oct. 22, 1940) dedicated to the petroleum industry of southeastern Europe, there appeared several articles relating to Yugos1avia.t In the first article the author calls attention to the fact that there are two fields in Yugoslavia that have been explored and exploited by more than 100 wells at variable depths during the last 50 years. These are on the Island of Mura, at the confluence of the Mura and the Drave. Additional exploration drilling in various other parts of the country has been without result, but certain ones of these explorations have revealed the existence of gas horizons that have some value, which are being used for industrial purposes. The depths of 50 of these wells was roo to 200 m.; the depths of 50 wells oil the Island of Mura ran from zoo to 500 m.; of 2 ; wells, 500 to I000 m.; of ro wells from rooo to 2000 meters. The deepest well drilling in Yugoslavia has reached 2000 in. In the Valley of Morave, in the region of Selnica, I00 km. south of Nish, there have been discovered asphalt-bearing limestones, which contain about 15 per cent asphalt and are associated with bituminous clays. Later, at Paclenica, important deposits of natural gas were found. A zone rich in gas and oil seepages runs through Pracec, Miklenska, Bujavica, etc. The author studied these regions from the point of view of stratigraphy and tectonics. The anticlines and gas-bearing domes are concentrated in two zones: the region of the Drave (Island of Mura) and the region of the Save, southeast of zagreb, which contains the gas field in exploitation in the region of Bujavica. A full description of the productive region of the Island of Mura has been given by Egon Bohm, a geologist, in the second article mentioned. This includes a history of the exploration and exploitation that took place under Hungarian rule in this region. The most important exploration was effected between 1884 and 1885 by Stavenov and Stinger, of Vienna. In 1927 work was done in the same region by Anton Raky, a well-known explorer who makes work of this kind his specialty.

Austria produced approximately 800 cisterns of 10,000 kg. each (56,000 bbls.) of crude oil of a 0.9428 sp. gr. during 1935. Of this Gosting II well near Zistersdorf, owned by the Erdolproduktions-Gesellschaft m.b.H., produced 86 per cent of the total, averaging a little over 1.8 cisterns, or about 125 bbl., per day. Gosting IVa of the same company was put in production early in December and produced a total of about 70 cisterns (4900 bbl.). Gosting IV was a failure, but a directional hole drilled from the same derrick produced Gosting IVa. Gosting I, a well owned jointly by the company above mentioned and the Raky-Danubia, was deepened late in the year and made about 2800 bbl. of oil at the rate of 70 bbl. per day. Completions during the year were as follows: In the Gosting pool, Gosting IV and IVa, drilled with rotary tools, the latter producing from Sarmat at a depth of 934 meters (3065 ft.); Kronberg I, of European Gas & Electric Co. with cable tools in Flysch at a depth of 566 m. as a dry hole; in the Oberlaa gas pool, one cable-tool well of the same company at a depth of 266 m. as a dry hole and one Fauck-Haiek system well of the Vacuum Oil Co. at a depth of 483 m. as a dry hole; one rotary hole of the European Gas & Electric Co. at Enzersdorf a/d. Fischa plugged and abandoned in Sarmat after a blow out and gas eruption at a depth of 699.5 meters. The Climax Molybdenum Company' s newest operation is the Henderson project, which is located on the east side of the Continental Divide. Ore reserves are estimated at more than 300 million tons at a grade of 0.49% MoS2. For mining the ore a modified panel caving system is used. The ore is transported to the Henderson mill on the west side of the Continental Divide on a 42 in. (1.07 m) gauge railroad through 9.6 miles (15.4 km) of tunnel and 4. 8 miles (7.7 km) of surface track, a total distance of 14.4 miles (23. 2 km). Each train consists of 30 ore cars with capacity of 22 st (20 mt) of ore or 660 st (599 mt) per train. The unmanned trains operate completely automatically. At the 54 in. by 84 in. primary gyratory crusher, the bottom dump ore cars pass over a dump scroll to discharge at a maximum rate of 100 st (91 mt) per minute. Dumped ore falls onto a rock box before passing over a 17 ft long by 46 ft wide (5. 2 m by 14 m) grizzly set at a 40° angle with bar spacings of 7 ½ and 8 ½ in. (191 mm and 216 mm) openings. An estimated 30 to 50% of the ore (which at times is wet and sticky) passes through the grizzly. The operators report that a shallower angle on the grizzly, perhaps 35º to 37º, would have been sufficient and would have prevented impact on the back of the crusher pocket by large boulders. This pocket as well as the crushed ore pocket under the crusher is lined with AR plate. The accompanying drawings show a "future splitter" and the operators are planning the installation of this unit to prevent impact and subsequent damage to the crusher spider. Crushed ore at an 8 to 9 in. (203 mm to 229 mm) size joins the grizzly undersize in the pocket beneath the crusher. This pocket is sized at 660 live st (599 mt) so that it will accept an entire trainload of ore. Crushed ore is removed from the pocket by a four-speed, 84 in. (2. 1 m) apron feeder operating at 9.6 to 29. 3 fpm (2.9 to 8.9 mpm). A 60 in. (1.5 m) takeaway conveyor operating at 480 fpm (146 mpm) delivers the crushed ore to a 58,000 st live and 193,000 st total (52,600 and 175, 100 mt) open stockpile under an A -frame supported tripper gallery. Impact idlers on the takeaway conveyor under the apron feeder discharge are mounted on wood blocks for a cushioning effect and ripped belt detecting bars are located behind each impact idler. The conveyor tunnel is of corrugated and galvanized steel construction rather than concrete. The concrete crusher enclosure is circular in design from its lowest level at elevation minus 110 ft 4 in. A FEW years ago H. M. Cyr, working in the Research Laboratories of The New Jersey Zinc Co., produced a few pounds of zinc1 of such purity that no other elements were detected in it by spectrographic analysis, using the facilities then available. This zinc contained less than one ten-thousandth of one per cent of metallic impurities.2 During the decade that followed upon the laboratory production of this "spectro-graphically pure" zinc, commercial developments brought about the production of large tonnages of zinc of purity exceeding 99.99 per cent, and today zinc of 99.999 per cent purity is produced and marketed as "chemically pure" zinc. Typical analyses of present supplies of high-purity zinc are given in Table 1. A systematic study has been made of the application of the real gas pseudo-pressure m(p) to short-time gas well testing. The m(p) function can be used in real gas flow problems to account for the variation of viscosity and z-factor with pressure. A mathematical model was solved numerically to generate solutions of various real gas flow problems. The effects of turbulence, formation damage and wellbore storage were included in the model. The analysis of simulated well tests showed that the interpretation methods normally used for liquid flow are generally accurate when the m(p) is used. For practical rates without turbulence, the solutions are not rate-sensifive, and the flow capacity.. kh and skin effect can be determined accurately from either a buildup or a drawdown test. However, the kh calculated from a drawdown test can be significantly low when turbulence is present. A case was simulated in which this error wa.s 36 percent. Turbulence does not affect the determination of kh from buildup tests. The proper determination of kh from p and pa buildup and drawdown plots is developed by analyzing their relationship to the m(p) method. A simple equation is given that can be used for long-range gas well performance forecasting. This expression is compared with a method pre-sended by Russell et al." Introduction The formation flow capacity and wellbore damage condition can be determined for liquid-producing tests by means of buildup and drawdown tests. These tests make use of short-time pressure transient data rather than stabilized flow tests that are often used for gas well testing. Tracy&apos; presented a method of gas well testing that was based on ideal gas equations and utilized p2 buildup plots. This method was shown to be good for low pressure wells. MatthewsZ suggested plotting p and using an average slope and average gas properties. This method was more successful on high pressure wells. Al-Hussainy, Ramey and Crawfordh howed that variation in gas properties could be simplified by using the real gas pseu do-pressure m(p). Because the work of Al-Hussainy et al. included only a few actual cases, there was a need to explore the use of the m(p) method for a greater variety of flow conditions. The occurrence of turbulent flow around the wellbore often is an important factor in gas well testing. Swift and Kiel,&apos; and Carter et a1.&apos; treated turbulence in gas well testing, but did not consider the variation of viscosity and z-factor with pressure. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the application of the m(p) method to buildup and drawdown testing. Vhe investigation included the effects of turbulence, formation damage and wellbore storage. Gas Flow Equations To formulate the mathematical model, many of the assumptions usually used in well testing theory are applied. The system has radial geometry with a closed outer boundary and is composed of a horizontal porous formation that has uniform and isotropic rock properties and uniform thickness. Allowance is made, however, for a radial region of reduced permeability near the wellbore. This region represents formation damage. The geometry of the system is shown in Fig. 1. Darcy&apos;s law does not always apply to gas flow. The explosive welding of metals is dependent upon the production of a jetting action caused by the collapsing of one metal plate against another. Successful welds are generally accomplished if the yield strength of the metals is in the range of 10,000 to 90,000 psi and the sonic velocity of the metal is greater than the detonation velocity of the explosive if direct contact explosive is being used.&apos; Should the detonation velocity exceed the velocity of sound in the metal it may still be possible to obtain the jetting action and a good weld. However, in most cases where a high detonation velocity is used complications arise because of reflected shock waves which tear the bond apart as fast as it is put together.&apos; Explosive welding of lead presents several problems since its yield strength and sound velocity are very low. Various values have been published3-5 for the velocity of sound in lead ranging from 2000~ to 23004 m per sec. Most of the high-order explosives have detonation velocities on the order of 6000 to 8000 m per sec, which precludes their use. The dynamites have a lower detonation velocity of around 2800 m per sec which is still somewhat too high. Lower-order explosives such as ammonium nitrate (1070 m per sec) must be used to weld lead in the as-received condition if the explosives are used in direct contact. Rather than use low-order explo&apos;sives it was decided to alter the sonic velocity of the lead. The sonic velocity is directly related to the modulus of the material according to the following expression: Fig 1—Interface of explosive weld of lead to steel. Bolling et al. 6 show that the shear modulus of lead single crystals increases from about 0.72 X1011 dynes per sq cm at 300°K to about 0.98 X1011 dynes per sq cm at 0°K, an increase of approximately 3 5 pct. This gives an increase in the sonic velocity of around 700 m per sec. Hence, the sonic velocity of lead at cryogenic temperatures is approximately equivalent to the detonation velocity of the low-order dynamites. We have obtained high-quality lead to steel explosive welds using a 40 pct dynamite in direct contact with the lead. Prior to detonation the lead was chilled with liquid nitrogen (78°K) to increase the strength and sonic velocity. Welds were made while the lead was cold. Specimen sizes were 3 by 6 in. A preset angle of 5 deg with a 0.10-in. standoff at the base was the geometrical setup used. The amount of explosive used for optimum welding of an 1/8 -in. -thick lead sheet to a steel plate was found to be 7 g per sq in. A PETN sheet explosive line wave generator was used to insure a linear detonation front through the dynamite. A photomicrograph of a lead-steel weld is shown in Fig. 1. The typical wave effect that constitutes a good explosive weld is present. When tested in shear, the weld failed in the lead, indicating that the bond is stronger than the lead base metal. SUMMARY In the German hard coal industry, relevant parameters influencing strata control have been identified in many years of intensive research work. The research results allow the formulation of the technical requirements on the design of shield supports as a function of the geological and operational conditions the face machinery is subject to. Keys to strata control are support resistance adjusted to the individual conditions of application and the tip-to-face interval. The technology to implement these requirements in actual operation is available. The automation of the shield-advance work cycle, currently setting in, can further contribute to improve strata control. In doing so, however, we must not forget the demand for an unsophisticated and low-cost design of shield supports with high operational safety. INTRODUCTION The German hard coal mining Industry produces coal from flat and inclined seams in depths between 400 and 1,300 m. The coal is exclusively won by longwall working involving face lengths up to 280 m. The thickness of the seams being worked is between 0.7 m and 4.5 m. Coal winning is fully mechanized with drum shearers or coal ploughs; two, three, or four leg shields are predominantly used as supports.

DeLamar, the largest silver mine in the United States outside the Coeur d’Alene District in Idaho, came into production in April 1977. It is a joint venture of Earth Resources Company and Canadian Superior Oil Co., with Earth Resources being the operator. The property is a consolidation of several old operations dating back to the 1800s; the better known of these are the DeLamar and Sommer-camp mines. DeLamar is situated in southwestern Idaho near the Oregon border in the Owyhee Mountains, 88 km (55 miles) southwest of Boise, Idaho. Heavy snowfalls and very low temperatures are common in the wintertime. Planned production was 77,500 kg (2.5, million oz) of silver and 5 13 kg (16,500 oz) of gold per year. Expected life at a milling rate of 1,540 mtpd (1,700 stpd) was 20 years, with an ore grade of 144 g Ag and 1.58 g Au per mt (4.2 oz Ag and 0.046 oz Au per st). Present production is at the rate of 1,900 mtpd (2,100 .stpd). The total cost to bring the mine into production was reported to be approximately $22 million, and the mill was reported to have cost about $10,000 per daily ton of design capacity. At DeLamar, naurnanite (Ag2Se) is the principal silver .mineral occurring with acanthite (Ag2S) disseminated through quartz veins and a silicified rhyolitic ash-flow tuff of Miocene age. The mineralization is relatively iron and manganese free and is readily amenable to cyanidation giving recoveries of 85% silver and 92% gold, which occurs free. When the plant was started, considerable difficulties were encountered in handling the wet sticky ore because of the high clay content. Following primary crushing, the ore is stockpiled. Due to the sticky nature of the ore, the vibrating feeders initially installed under the stockpile were replaced by a reclaim hopper and an apron feeder which was fed 24 hours a day by a front-end loader. The minus 200 mm (8 in.) ore is fed to a 5.5 m by 2.75 m (18 ft by 9 ft) autogenous mill followed by a 2.75 m by 4.57 m (9 ft by 15 ft) ball mill and cyclones. The mills are equipped with 750 kw and 520 kw (1,000 hp and 700 hp) motors. Both mills discharge to the same cyclone feed sump and a portion of the cyclone underflow is returned to the autogenous mill. PREVIOUS investigations into convective flow in molten metals have examined systems in which the length-to-height ratio of the enclosure is large, usually using long graphite boats.&apos;&apos;2 In normal castings this ratio is generally small and it is not possible to extrapolate the results of previous work to casting configurations. The present investigation was undertaken to examine liquid flow in systems of low length to height ratio. The apparatus used for the experiments is shown in Fig. 1. The molten zone of tin is contained in an aluminum mold of inside dimensions 6.4 by 6.4 by 0.31 cm. A heating block containing a resistance coil is attached to one end of the mold and a cooling block is attached to the other end. These are used to produce a wide range of temperature differences across the mold. The mold is contained in a stainless steel tank which is heated from the outside by resistance heaters to give the required operating temperature during the experiment. Temperature measurements in the molten tin are made with an iron-constantan thermocouple PT equal to 5 atm. The phase diagram derived by us was the same as that found by Krivsky and Schuhmann, except for a similar discrepancy in one boundary line representing the gas composition in equilibrium with SO a. The vapor pressures of the pure components can be neglected at 1700°K, 1 atm and 2500°K, 5 atm. There-fore, in these cases PT is essentially the total pres-sure in the system. This is valid for all the diagrams presented by Krivsky and Schuhmann except for the one at 2500°K and 0.01 atm, where the vapor pressure of silicon is comparable to PT.6 This work was supported in part by the American Iron and Steel Institute. &apos;C. The use of electrical well logs for the quantitative determination of such reservoir parameters as connate water saturation, formation permeability and connate water salinity has recently been attracting the attention of a number of workers1,2,3,4,5. While the theory of the determination of connate water salinity from the self potential S.P. log has received rather detailed treatment, relatively little attention has been paid to the theoretical aspects involved in the quantitative interpretation of resistivity data. It is clear that if electrical well logs can be used for the quantitative evaluation of physical characteristics of reservoir rock, they will provide a valuable tool to supplement cheaply information obtained by more laborious core analysis. In certain cases it is conceivable that the coring program could be considerably curtailed if the electric log could be relied upon to give reasonably accurate quantitative information. It is our object in this paper to examine the theoretical basis of quantitative log interpretation as expressed in such well-established logging concepts as formation factor and cementation factor. It is also our object to investigate the physical aspects of the rela- tionship which is presumed to exist between resistivity index and brine saturation in reservoir rock. In particular, we will endeavor to draw attention to the fact that it is possible to express these logging concepts in terms of capillary pressure-saturation relationships, permeability and tortuosity, parameters which we will consider in this paper to be fundamentally indicative of rock texture. The probability of being able to obtain from log recordings alone the data theoretically essential to permit quantitative log interpretatiou will be examined, and consideration will also be given to the problem of formulating simple semi-empirical relationships for use in the field. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The concept of formation resistivity factor, or as it is now commonly called, formation factor, appears to have been introduced by G. E. Archie",". Formation resistivity factor as defined by Archie is the resistivity of a rock 100 per cent brine-saturated divided by the resistivity of the brine. This relationship had previously been used by physical chemists and the concept is, for example, implicit in an early treatment by Fricke7 of the conductivity of aqueous slurries. Archie was able to establish the fact that although the relationship between formation factor and porosity did not change too greatly for different rock textures, the relationship between formation factor and permeability was markedly dependent on rock texture. The relationship found by Archie between formation factor and porosity was expanded by H. Guyod8. Archie had suggested that the formation factor, F, could be expressed in terms of the porosity, F, as follows: F =F-m .... (11 where, F = effective porosity fraction of the sand, and, m = an exponent greater than about 1.3. Guyod introduced the term cementation factor for the exponent, m, since it may be qualitatively shown that formation factor for any given porosity tends to increase as the sand becomes more cemented. It would appear that the concept of m as an exponent representing the cementation in a sand is strictly only of qualitative value, since the quantitative estimation of m by means other than the determination of F and F has not been possible. Guyod suggests that m can be estimated from a visual examination of a sample of rock, but this method appears to be both arbitrary and unreliable. It can be said, however, that in intergranular reservoirs of practical interest, the range of m is from about 1.4 to 3.0. A concentration of manganese nodule varies areally from 0 to 30 kg/m2 in the central-eastern deep sea bottom of Central Pacific Basin with depth of 5,600-5,900m, but generally it is low, mostly of the abundance order from 0 to less than some kilograms per square metres through the bottom. A high concentration over about l0kg/m is localized to the northwestern basin, besides "St. 414 Deep Sea Hill" and “GH 76-1 Trought”, and also it is likely related with the substratum of deep sea clay. Nodules are tentatively classified into nine types of Sr, SPr, SEr, Db, Ss/SPs, ISs, IDPs and V, in terms of morphology and surface feature. The types may be related with internal structure, nuculeus, mineral composition, chemical composition, occurrence and areal distribution, and might have resulted from various environmental factors of nodule genesis. The abundance of nodule at each station shows the interesting relation with acoustic records by 3.5KHz and seismic reflection profilings. In both the records, thick transparent layer over about 45m thick yield neither any nor significant amount of nodule. The layer less than 45m relates with abundant nodules up to 30kg/m2, though it yield also very little nodule in some cases. The relation suggests that the formation of nodule most likely could be related with the accumulation rate of the post-middle Eocene sedimentary sequence to some extent and also with other controlling factors. The relation can lead us to the tentative delineation of distribution of nodule deposits in the area. The comparative-consideration with the deposits in GH 74-5 area, just east- ward of the present area, shows the areal peculiarity of nodule genesis in deep sea bottom. The results of chemical analyses will be discussed elsewhere.
