Beryllium is the most soluble of the double-acceptor impurities in germanium; the solubility is at least 1 x 10 19 atoms cm3. Photoconductive, optical, and electrical measurements were made on a set of Ge:Be samples grown without other intentionally added imp~ivities. The excited-states spectrum of beryllium in germanium was determined both in zero field and in magnetic fields up to 30 kc. It was found that the absorption 0-f lines in the vicinity of the G line increased markedly with increasing magnetic field. The ioniza-tion energy of neutral beryllium in germanium was determined to be 24.3 * 0.1 mez: using the excited-states spectrum. An infrared detector using a Ge:Be element was found to have a normalized detectivity D* (50 p, 1000 cps, 1 cps) of 9 X ldO cm-~ps"~-w-'. The Ge:Be sambles exhibited low-field breakdown and inibzirity band conduction effects at low temperatures. WHILE the properties of most dopants in germanium have been thoroughly investigated, the properties of beryllium in germanium have had relatively little attention. Much of the work that has been done' has been concerned with the properties of singly ionized beryllium in germanium. The purpose of the present work was to determine the photoconductive and electrical properties of beryllium-doped germanium (Ge:~e) with a small concentration of other electrically active impurities. Ge:Be is of special interest since beryllium is the most soluble of the known double-acceptor impurities in germanium. MATERIALS PREPARATION A set of &:Be crystals with beryllium concentrations between 5 x 1013 and 1x 10'' cmm3 and without other intentionally added impurities was grown in a hydrogen atmosphere by the horizontal zone-refining techniques described by Swiggard and Shenker.2 The segregation coefficient of beryllium in germanium was found to be about 0.07 and its maximum solubility was found to be greater than 1 x 10'' atoms cm-3 which is in agreement with previous results.' Most of the crystals were found to have a small net concentration of shallow acceptors; for example, a crystal having a beryllium concentration of 1.1 X 1016 cm-3 was found to have a net concentration of shallow acceptors of less than 1.5 X 1013 cm-3. Ingots designed to have a beryllium concentration of 1 x 1017 cm-3 or less exhibited a loss of electrically active beryllium. That is, the beryllium concentration was lower than expected and the decrease of the beryllium concentration along the length of the ingot was much larger than expected. It is hypothesized that this effect is due to the oxidation of the beryllium by the residual oxygen in the system. This effect is similar to but not as severe as the effect observed with boron in germani~m.3, 4 OPTICAL ABSORPTION SPECTRUM The excited-states spectrum of neutral beryllium atoms in germanium was studied by measuring the infrared optical absorption spectrum. A typical spectrum is shown in Fig. 1; the labeling of the absorption lines follows that of Fisher and Fan.* The spacings between the observed lines and the D line are nearly equal to the corresponding spacings for the other ac -ceptors in germanium.5-7 By the use of the theoretical result67' that the neutral impurity ionization energy is 2.53 mev larger than the energy of the D line, the ionization energy of neutral beryllium in germanium was determined to be 24.3 * 0.1 mev at 4.2"K. This method yields a more precise value of the impurity ionization energy than the usual Hall effect method.' The absorption spectrum of Ge:Be was also measured as a function of magnetic field using a magnetic field parallel to the incident radiation and using unpolarized radiation. A typical spectrum taken at 30 kG is shown in Fig. 2. An unexpected observation is that the absorption of the lines in the vicinity of the G line (there is a strong possibility that some of these lines may be associated with lines other than the G line) increases with magnetic field. FURTHER study of data used in determinations of 1—rates of diffusion of boron in austenite and 2—solubilities of boron in the a and phases of iron and steel' has provided an equation for the diffusion of boron in a iron. In brief, the previously published data were accumulated from the results of deboron-izing (and decarburizing) experiments carried out in the range of 700° to 1300°C. Diffusion coefficients (D?) for boron in austenite were calculated using the Grube solution of Fick's law. However, only solubility values were estimated from the discontinuous concentration-penetration curves, Fig. 1, which are characteristic of diffusion in two phases. Dr. Carl Wagner' has recently provided a solution for calculating D values from penetration curves of this type as follows: Cl1.1 —C8/C8- C11.1 = vp ? e ? erf (?) and D = ?/4?2 t where C11,12, C8, C11, and E have the values shown in Fig. 1. D is the diffusion coefficient, sq cm per sec; t is time of deboronizing anneal, see; and ? is a di-mensionless parameter. For a given diffusion experiment, the value of ? can be readily obtained by graphical solution from a plot of y vs the right-hand part of Eq. 1. D may then be evaluated from Eq. 2. The avplication of this solution to previously re-ported results, of which excerpts are given in Table I, permits the calculation of diffusion coefficients for boron in a iron. On the basis of these meager data, it is tentatively concluded that the diffusion of boron in a may be represented by the equation Da = 1011 e-92,900/RT where R is the gas constant, cal X 0C-1 X mol-1; and T is the absolute temperature, OK. Although the frequency factor, 106 sq cm per sec, is admittedly several orders of magnitude higher than expected, the value of Q, 62,000 cal per mol, appears reasonable and is, in fact, very similar to that for the self-diffusion of iron. It is pertinent to mention at this point that the value of Q obtained for the diffusion of boron in austenite by means of the Wagner solution is 19,000 cal per mol and is in excellent agreement with the value previously reported1 in the equation DT = 2xl0-3 e-21,000/RT [4] which was determined by the application of the Grube solution to other data. The fact that determined constants A and Q in the equation D? = A e-Q/RT were practically the same, independent of whether the Wagner or Grube solutions were used in determinations of D values, strengthened the authors' belief that the computed values of D (Table I) using the Wagner solution are reliable. The relative values in Eqs. 3 and 4 for the diffusion of boron in the a and ? phases, respectively, suggest that boron forms a substitutional solid solution in a iron and an interstitial solid solution in ? iron. The same tentative conclusion has been reached by McBride et al.3 on the basis of relative solubilities, atom diameter, and the size of the interstitial hole in a and ? iron. In connection with the data for test 14 listed in Table I, it is of interest to calculate the solubility of boron in a iron using the D value given by Eq. 3. As might be anticipated from the small movement of the interface in test 14, proper substitutions in Eqs. 2 and 1 give a low value, approximately 0.0004 pct B, at 850°C. Apparently at 835°C (test 13) it is possible to obtain 0.0018 pct B, and at 850°C only 0.0004 pct B into solution in the a phase before a second phase appears. These observations are consistent with the Fe-B constitution diagram proposed by McBride, Spretnak, and Speiser.3 References P. E. Busby, M. E. Warga, and C. This paper records the results of the earth resistivity surveys made in the Godavari River in connection with the Ramapadasagar project. After describing the topographical and geological features of the area, the results of the investigation at the several sites have been mentioned. Further, a detailed account has been given of the resistivity methods adopted, the apparatus used and the interpretation of the curves. The resistivity measurements carried out over the water course have been specially outlined, and a review of the verification of the electrical indications by drilling in a number of cases, has also been presented. Introduction The Government of Madras has under consideration the Ramapadasagar project which is estimated to cost some Rs.660,-000,000 (about two hundred million dollars). The most essential feature of this project is the construction of a high dam across the Godavari near Polavaram for impounding the waters of this great river of South India, whose maximum discharge is 2 million cu secs in flood time. It is estimated that when the proposed reservoir is constructed, about one million tons of rice could be produced annually under irrigation. To those who have had any acquaintance at all with the recent distressing famine conditions which India has passed through and is still undergoing, the Lounteous effects which this project will bring about to the country in the future, are obvious. In the region of the proposed reservoir, the river flows for several miles through a hilly tract, hemmed in between flanks of hard, solid rock; but the river bed is mostly sandy. A few bore holes put down in this sandy bed touched rock at a depth of 180 to 200 ft. The river bed is about jo ft above the mean sea level (m.s.l.) and the bedrock was found at —125 to —160 ft m.s.l. The crest of the dam is proposed at +162 ft m.s.l. The proposed dam mould therefore be about 120 to 130 ft above the river bed, and the foundations would have to reach down nearly zoo ft below the bed at the deepest part. A number of alternative sites were proposed for investigation, and it became necessary to quickly ascertain the bedrock topography at these sites. Dr. M. S. Krishnan,* who was consulted in the matter, furnished a detailed account of the geological features of the region and suggested a geophysical investigation which the writer carried out from February to April 1944, employing solely the electrical resistivity methods. The total length of the survey lines for the electrical measurements amounted to 62,600 ft and the number of resistivity determinations was about 2500. The North Texas district, as' herein defined, includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita, and Wilbarger. This area covers generally the crest and south flank of a system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift. The oil and gas accumulations along this feature are in traps, which, although localized by structures incident to the regional uplift, usually are modified by stratigraphic changes in the sediments. Excepting those in southeastern Baylor, southern Archer, and southwestern Clay counties, all the fields within the district are on this Red River uplift. These exceptions, which have the same type of oil and gas accumulation as the other fields, are on the extreme north end of the Bend arch, which is a broad anticline plunging northward from the Llano uplift in central Texas to Archer County. The larger part of past oil and gas production has come from Pennsyl-vanian strata, with less important amounts from the Permian, and minor but increasingly important quantities from the Ordovician. Developments during 1942 Approximately 500 wells were drilled in the district during 1942, in contrast with some 1600 wells drilled during 1941, and only some goo oil wells were completed, a decrease from 1941 of more than 10 per cent in the number of successful drilling operations of the total wells drilled. Production increased slightly over the previous year in spite of a decrease in the number of producing wells. The average depth of discovery wells was some 600 ft. deeper than in 1941. Although more discoveries produced from horizons above the base of the Strawn series than those below the Strawn, the deeper horizons, including the Bend series of the Pennsylvanian, the Mississippian limestone, and the Simpson and Ellenburger of the Ordovician, furnished most of the addition to oil reserves. The largest single addition to the reserves was again in the Ellenburger formation in the K. M. A. field. During the year 47 wells were completed, bringing the total developed acreage in this horizon to some 5450 acres. The most active area was Montague County, in which eight fields, or potential fields, were discovered although only 39 oil wells were completed. K. M. A: Pressure Maintenance Satisfactory progress was made by the K. M. A. Pressure Maintenance Association in 1942, At the end of the year, 100 wells were being used for input and total monthly volume of gas returned to the reservoir reached a high of 430,971 M cu. ft. in December, with an input ratio of 587 cu. ft. of gas returned for each barrel of oil produced during the month. This paper presents a preliminary analysis of the fundamental relationship between the net energy used and the respective product size throughout the entire range of sizes covered by crushing and grinding, and an attempt to find a sensible correlation between the existing theories. Walker, Lewis, McAdams, and Gilliland' have given the following differential equation of a general form for comminution: dE = -C§ [1] where E is the net energy required per unit weight in a certain process of comminution; x is the factor indicating the fineness of the product; n is the exponent indicating the order of the process, and C is a constant related with the material, units chosen, etc. H exponent n in the above equation is replaced by numerical figures 2, 1, and 1 1/2, the integrated form of the general equation leads to the well known fundamental theories represented by the law of von Rittinger,' law of Kick, and the third theory of comminution by Bond, respectively. The total net energies (E) from infinite feed size to a product of size x are as follows: The net energy required in a certain process of comminution is proportional to the new surface developed according to the law of von Rittinger, to the weight or size of the bodies treated according to the law of Kick, and to the length of the new cracks formed which initiate breakage according to the theory and explanation by Bond. On a logarithmic paper, where particle size is presented on the abscissa and energy consumption on the ordinate (see Fig. 21, all three relationships are represented by straight lines. The slope m of the line according to the law of von Rittinger is equal to -1.0; of Kick, 0; and of Bond, -0.5. Experimental evidence in favor of the law of Rittinger has been presented, e.g., by Gross and zimmerley5 on quartz crushed in a drop weight crusher and evaluated for surface by the method of dissolution, by Dean on magnetite crushed by a similar method and evaluated for surface by the determination of coersive force, by piret7 and co-workers on a group of minerals crushed again by a similar method as well as by compression and evaluated for surface by permeability and gas adsorption methods, and by schellinger8 on a group of minerals ground in a calorimetric ball mill and evaluated for surface by gas adsorption. Experimental evidence in favor of the law of Kick seems to be scant in the field of comminution. On the other hand, in the field of mechanical engineering Kick's law seems to be of fundamental nature in processes such as cutting, pressing, shaping, and rolling of metallic substances. Experimental evidence in favor of the third theory has been provided by Bond." To a large extent, data are based on the vast amount of grindability tests performed in the laboratories of Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. In addition to the devoted proponents of one or the other of the basic theories listed above, certain investigators have indicated that one of the theories might be applied for a certain range of sizes, while another theory might be used for other sizes. In a discussion of a paper by Bond," Dobie" presented a statement at the International Mineral Dressing Congress in London (1952) indicating that 1) for large particles, the law of Kick was approximately correct; 2) for finer particles, von Rittinger's suggestion was nearer to the truth; and 3) Bond's new

A. G. Crocker and M. Bevis (Battersea College of Technology)— Richman and Richman and conard17 have recently published the very interesting results of their studies on the plastic deformation of Fe-Ni-C martensites and of an Fe-5 wt pct Be alloy. Other work on the range of Fe-Be alloys containing between 16 and 27 at. pct Be has also been reported by Richman." One of the fascinating features of this work is that the materials investigated deform primarily by means of twinning and that several twinning modes are operative in addition to the well-established (112 ) mode of bcc materials The composition planes of these unusual twins were determined using a single-surface analysis and reported as (0131, "{045)" or "{089)", and It is now thought1' that the "{0,1,13)" habit reported for the Fe-Ni-C alloys'' is more likely to be near "{127)". Although the full twinning elements of these unusual twinning modes could not be determined directly from the experimental results, the authors attempt to deduce the elements by considering twin intersectionslQ and by using the projection technique of Jaswon and Dove. The basic assumption of their approach is that the (013) habits are truly rational planes but that the other habits are irrational and merely approximated to by the indices quoted above. They thus deduce that the twinning mode describing the (013) habit is either Type I or compound and that the modes describing the other habits are Type 11. This deduction must however be false as all twinning modes in cubic structures obeying the classical orientation relationships of deformation twinning must be compound. Type-I and Type-I1 modes can occur in all of the other crystal systems (indeed in the triclinic system compound modes are not allowed), but in the cubic system only compound modes can arise. This fact, which does not appear to be well-known, fol- lows immediately from the relations between the four twinning elements defining a twinning mode. Thus for a Type-I mode which is uniquely defined by the rational twinning elements K1 = hi and given by: where the summation convention of the tensor calculus has been adopted. For cubic materials the metrics and reduce to the unit tensors and j so that we have It is clear from these equations that both ki and ui must take on integral values; i.e., Kz, and ql must be rational, if hi and vi are integers, i.e., if K1 and are rational. Thus for cubic materials a Type-I mode must degenerate into a compound mode and the same result also arises for Type-II modes. The apparently irrational habits observed by the authors can thus not be explained in terms of Type-I1 twinning if the classical laws of deformation twinning are to be obeyed. An alternative explanation of the irrational habits is that they may arise from twinning modes with four irrational twinning elements. These modes, which do not obey the classical orientation relationships associated with deformation twinning, have been shown to arise as the result of double twinning processes in magnesium,22 but may also describe a simple shear on an irrational plane in an irrational direction. The creep-rupture behavior of commercial powder-metallurgy molybdenum rod is reported in the temperature range 1600" to 250O°C, at stresses up to 9000 psi and times up to 1 month. The effects of temperature, stress, and grain growth are discussed. Rupture time is fitted to the Larson-Miller parameter and compared to lower-temperature and higher-stress results reported by pugh.1 BECAUSE of its high melting point, molybdenum should retain useful strength to relatively high temperatures. Combined with its ready availability in the United States, this makes it attractive for many applications in missiles, rockets, and so forth—wherever its susceptibility to oxidation can be tolerated or overcome. The mechanical properties of molybdenum rod in the temperature range —200" to 1540°C have been reported by pugh,' Bechtold,' Parke,3 and Carriker and Guard.4 Madden and chen5 have measured the tensile properties of molybdenum single crystals in vacuum up to about 2500°C. As one further step in evaluating its mechanical usefulness, the constant-load creep-rupture properties of commercial powder-metallurgy molybdenum rod have been investigated in the range 1600" to 2500°C. MATERIAL TESTED Creep specimens were machined from 1/2-in. round commercial molybdenum rod, manufactured from powder by pressing, sintering, and swaging. Spectrochemical analysis of the rod showed "traces" (less than 0.01 pct) of silicon, aluminum, chromium, iron, and zirconium, and "faint traces" (less than 0.001 pct) of manganese, magnesium, cobalt, and nickel. Carbon content was 130 to 200 ppm, nitrogen was 110 to 180 ppm, and oxygen 30 to 35 ppm. A typical microstructure of the as-received rod is shown in Fig. 1. Room temperature tensile properties for five specimens strained at about 0.015 in. per in. per min are shown in Table I. CREEP SPECIMENS USED The specimens used for creep-rupture testing are illustrated in Fig. 2. The 1/4-in.-diam gage section was 3/4 in. long, and terminated at shoulders 5 mils high. These shoulders served as fiducial marks for optical strain measurements. Surface finish on the gage section was 16pin. r.m.s. One specimen, for a "long-time" test described below, was modified by dividing the 3/4-in. gage length into three 1/4-in. long sections with individual diameters of 0.250, 0.230, and 0.210 in., each terminating in a pair of fiducial shoulders. TESTING PROCEDURE The constant-load creep-testing machine used has been described by Smith, Olson, and Brown.6 In it the specimen is held vertically on the axis of a cylindrical tantalum or tungsten heater tube by threaded molybdenum or tungsten grips. Both specimen and grips are heated by radiation from the heater-tube, which is heated by its own electrical resistance. The bottom specimen grip is held at its lower end by a clevis pin. The testing load is applied to the specimen through the upper grip by means of hanging weights, a constant force-multiplication lever system, and a pull rod sealed to the chamber lid by a bellows. The incandescent specimen is viewed by an external optical system through slots in the heater-tube and radiation shielding, and an enlarged image of it is projected on a ground-glass screen. Gage-length measurements are made on this image with a pair of cathetometers. Thorium oxide coatings were applied to the threaded ends of most specimens, to prevent diffusion-welding of specimens to grips during testing. Without such a coating welding usually occurred, and grips were often broken by subsequent efforts to remove the tested specimens.

The mechanical behavior of recrystallized chromil~m of high purity has been studied, principally in torsion and to a lesser extent in tension, at temperatures between —196oand 350oC. Depending upon the conditions of test, the material may show brittle or ductile behavior or an intermediate or subduc-tile state having some of the characteristics of each. This latter state existed at temperatures between approximately ±50°C and was characterized by a) extensive creep at stresses well below the normal fracture stress, b) nonelastic loading/unloading effects during creep, c) strain softening under cyclic loading, and d) final failure of a brittle type. Suggestions are made on the dislocation processes and interactions which give rise to subductile behavior The ductile-brittle transition in bee metals has been studied mainly by tension and bend tests. These methods, however, favor crack propagation which may follow too closely on initiation for detailed study of the transition itself. For work of this nature, therefore, other modes of deformation less favorable to crack propagation may be preferable. This paper describes a study of the ductile-brittle transition in chromium which is based mainly on torsional testing although a few subsidiary experiments were made in tension. It appears to reveal at the transition an intermediate state that cannot properly be described as either brittle or ductile. Torsional tests on chromium have been made by other workers1 but not, as here, primarily for study of this intermediate state. EXPERIMENTAL The chromium, in the form of swaged rod, was prepared by techniques already described.' The particular material used was one in which the main impurities were 0.03 wt pet 0 and 0.006 wt pet N and one in which transition from ductile to brittle states in torsion conveniently fell at about room temperature. For torsion, test specimens were from 5/16-in.-diam rod to provide test portions 1-1/4 in. long by 7/32 in. diam, a twist of 1 deg thereby corresponding throughout this paper to 0.0015 surface shear. The specimens before test were annealed for 2 hr at 1200°C in vacuo, which left them with a re-crystallized grain size of about 0.01 mm, and then electropolished. They were tested under dead-weight loading in an apparatus in which they could be surrounded by a furnace or cooling chamber, tests in practice being made at various temperatures between -196" and +350°C. For tension tests, cylindrical specimens were prepared in a similar manner and tested at room temperature under dead-weight loading. RESULTS (TORSION) Subductile State. The state described above as intermediate between brittle and ductile may be perhaps best defined by reference to torque/twist curves at various temperatures. These are grouped in Fig. 1. Below about -50°C the material was brittle, in the sense that it exhibited little plastic deformation under stress and fractured by cleavage along planes of maximum resolved tension, which in torsion produces the well-known helical type of fracture. The deformation is typified by the curves for -196" and -150°C in Fig. 1; it shows a slight but progressive deviation from linearity above a certain torque, here about 50 lb-in., until fracture occurs at about 95 lb-in. A feature to which it is desired specially to call attention is that under none of the loads did the specimens show significant creep.

Gold was discovered at the Haile mine in Lancaster County, South Carolina, in 1827 or 1828, and since that time the mine has been worked intermittently by both open-pit and underground methods until its forced closure in 1942 by World War II. Production figures are incomplete, especially for the early years, but the total gold produced is estimated to have been greater than 200,000 oz. Thus, the Haile mine has been the most productive gold mine in the eastern United States. The upper, residually enriched ores were relatively rich, but the bulk of the production has come from the mining of lower grade ores. General Geology The Haile mine is located in late Precambrian or early Paleozoic rocks of the Carolina slate belt at the edge of the Atlantic Coastal Plain [(Fig. 1)]. The metamorphic grade is lower greenschist facies and the rocks have been folded into a sequence of northeast-trending isoclinal folds. The gold is associated with siliceous, pyritic, and kaolinized felsic pyroclastic and tuffaceous rocks in an interbedded volcanic and volcanoclastic sequence of felsic to mafic tuffaceous rocks and argillaceous sediments [(Fig. 2)]. The ore bodies occur in two northeast trending zones approximately 500 m apart; each zone is 30-70 m wide and 600 m or more in length, with possible extensions to the east beneath the Coastal Plain sediments. Mineralogy. Gold in the Haile mine is always associated with siliceous and/or pyritic ores. The gold occurs in at least three states: As native gold as originally deposited; as residual gold derived from the breakdown of pyrite; and as gold included in pyrite. Major associated minerals in addition to quartz and pyrite are kaolinite, sericite, and iron oxides. Minor molybdenite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, copper sulfides, sphalerite, rutile, and topaz are also present. Petrology. The gold-bearing ore zones vary from highly siliceous rocks to pyritic massive sulfide lenses. This variation is most easily seen today along strike from the Haile pit to the Red Hill pit. Ore grade material still exposed in the wall of the Haile pit consists of a highly siliceous and very thinly bedded rock containing minor pyrite. Along strike, the character of the mineralization changes to pyritic massive sulfide lenses occurring interbedded with siliceous horizons at the Red Hill pit. The siliceous rocks vary from the thinly-bedded material as just described from the Haile pit to silicified fragmental-appearing rocks to totally recrystallized cherty rocks lacking any recognizable primary features. Scattered, apparently at random, throughout the very thinly-bedded and very fine-grained ore face of the Haile pit are seemingly anomalous silica-rich clasts or concretions up to 5 cm in diameter which will be discussed later in this paper. Alteration. One of the most striking features of the Haile deposit is the alteration mineral assemblage which is intimately associated with the siliceous and pyritic ores. This altered material has been intersected in drill core at depths greatly exceeding the modern weathering profile and is, therefore, of hydrothermal origin rather than from supergene processes. This "sericite," actually a fine-grained mixture of sericite, kaolinite, and quartz, can be shown to stratigraphically underlie the gold- quartz-pyrite zone, and is well exposed in the open pit just southeast of the Haile and Bumalo pits. Relict textures indicate that this highly altered material was originally a felsic ash flow. Other similar alteration zones have been found in outcrop and drill core underlying the remaining ore bodies. Thus each of the mineralized zones consists of two parts: A siliceous and/or pyritic gold-bearing ore zone which is stratigraphically underlain by a zone of high alumina minerals, in this case sericite and kaolinite along with variable amounts of quartz. A green chrome mica, presumably fuchsite, is present in trace amounts in the high alumina zone. Genesis An adequate model to explain the origin and distribution of the gold deposits in the Carolina slate belt is presently lacking. Worthington and Kiff1 suggested a volcanogenic origin for certain gold deposits in the North Carolina slate belt from the waning exhalations of felsic volcanic piles. They also pointed out that such an origin has similarities to many epithermal precious metal deposits located in more recent volcanic piles in the western United States. A further key to the understanding of the genesis of the gold mineralization at the Haile mine is the close association of the mineralization in siliceous and sulfidic horizons to the genetically related and stratigraphically underlying high alumina alteration. Such high-alumina alteration is common around felsic volcanic centers in the Carolina slate belt and the mineralogy as seen today consists of some combination of kaolinite, sericite, pyrophyllite, kyanite, andalusite or sillimanite depending on the local prevailing grade of metamorphism. Accompanying the high-alumina alteration are large quantities of pyrite and iron-oxide minerals as well as characteristic minor accessory minerals often including base metal sulfides, fluorine-bearing minerals (topaz, fluorite, apatite), titanium-bearing minerals (ilmenite, rutile),

Mr. Stuart in addressing a formal welcome to the Institute to the " little city of the mountains," spoke of the value of the services of the mining engineer in developing the mineral wealth of Virginia and in solving the problems of her geological history. Mr. Metcalf, President of the Institute, replied on behalf of the Institute to the cordial welcome of the mayor and Mr. Stuart, and then read an inaugural address on Force. Since the opening of the Wheeler oil and gas field in Carter County and the discovery of oil near Lawton, Comanche County, Okla., in 1904, interest has been aroused regarding the origin of the oil in the Permian "Red Bed" region which lies between the Wichita and Arbuckle Mountains on the north and the Red River on the south. The later development of the Healdton, Loco, Duncan, Fox, and Graham fields south and west of the Arbuckle Mountains has brought the region into prominence. Recent discoveries of Ordovician and of Pennsylvanian fossils in wells in the Healdton field and of Pennsylvanian fossils in the Fox and Graham fields are of such importance from a scientific and a commercial standpoint that the occurrences and the problems arising therefrom are here briefly described. Producing oil and gas sands in the southern Oklahoma fields, with the exception of those in the Cretaceous and underlying rocks in the vicinity of Madill, Marshall County, are associated with the Permian "Red Beds" or with the underlying Paleozoic strata. In the two fields farthest south of the Arbuckle Mountains, Healdton and Loco, production has been entirely confined to sands at depths of 700 to 1400 ft. (213 to 416 m.) and only recently has a producing sand as deep as 1860 ft. (567 m.)l been encountered. These sands are found near and below the base of the red rocks and were supposed by Wegemann and Heald2 to belong in large part to the basal Permian, Wichita formation, or to the immediately underlying formations. Fossils in the blue shales and in the limestones associated with the deeper sands now prove them to be Pennsylvanian and all the producing sands at Healdton are found to be of this age. In the fields nearest the Arbuckle Mountains, the Wheeler sands at a depth of about 700 ft. (213 m.) appear to be of Permian age,

Secretary's Note.—M. Beutter's introductory remarks, being simply a resume of Prof. Hone's paper, with a disclaimer of the intention to criticise it, have been omitted, and the remainder of this contribution lias been somewhat condensed, without omitting any essential statements. M. Beutter, St. Etienne, France* (communication to the Secretary†):—Professor Home observes in $ 47 of his paper that the fluid-compression of steel diminishes piping by forcing the liquid and viscous metal, while the pipe is forming, or after it has formed, into the space so produced, and proceeds to study the different systems of compression, alluding to the four principal ones: Whitworth, Illingmorth, Williams, and Harmet. Having now for many years had in use the last-named process, that of M. Henri Harmet, I shall attempt to explain the difference between it and the three other processes named. The Harmet process does not diminish or close the pipe after it has formed, but prevents it from forming; and I may add that it is the only one of the four which produces this result. It is true that the Whitworth process diminishes the interior hollow by localizing it around the central axis of the ingot, which is afterwards removed by trepanning the hollow forg-ings for which this process has been, I believe, always exclusively used. The Illingworth and Williams processes, which, in my opinion, are applicable only to small ingots, of necessity allow the pipe to form, or (to use the expression of Professor Howe) they allow the surface of the lake of liquid steel to sink into the interior of the ingot, since they involve waiting a certain time before compression, so that (in the case of the Williams process) the ingot-mold can be opened without danger, or (in the case of the Illingworth process) so as to avoid the risk that the steel may enter the grooves produced by the removal of the distance-bars.
