The stability of a 70/30 Mn-Cu alloy aged to peak damping has been investigated using electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and torsional pendulum measurements. Storage at room temperature or at 100" C causes a reduction in damping capacity. This is shown to be due to the formation of subdomains which "lock" the main domain structure and so hinder their movement. After storage the damping capacity can be restored by a retransformation treatment, which generates structures identical to those found in newly aged specimens. Plastic deformation by rolling also causes a decrease in damping capacity. In this case the damping capacity can only be restored by retransformation if the amount of deformation is less than about 5 pct. THE general metallography and structure of these high damping capacity alloys has been discussed in Part I of this work.1 Part II deals with some of the variables that affect the damping capacity. In particular, the stability of the damping capacity of a 70/30 alloy aged for 2 hr at 425° C and quenched has been investigated. The temperature sensitivity of the damping capacity of a 70/30 alloy aged for 2 hr at 450° C has been reported by Birchon.2 The damping capacity begins to decrease with increasing temperature, and is very low above the M, temperature of 125°C. The cubic — tetragonal transformation is completely reversible and there is no apparent thermal hysteresis associated with the change in damping capacity. Another important effect was first reported by Dean and his coworkers.3 They noticed a decrease in the damping capacity with time for specimens of a quenched tetragonal alloy. More recently workers at the Admiralty Materials Laboratory 4 have studied the stability of an aged 70/30 alloy. They found that the damping capacity decreased to half its original value after about 1000 hr at room temperature. EXPERIMENTAL The techniques used for electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction have been described in Part I. The damping capacity was measured by means of a torsional pendulum, using rectangular specimens, 3 by 0.3 mm with a 6 cm gage length. The specific damping capacity, S.D.C., was calculated as a percent amplitude decay in free vibrations over 10 cycles, starting at an amplitude which corresponded to a 700 psi surface shear stress. Because of the stress dependence of the damping,' the values obtained were about a third those reported for a 5000 psi surface shear stress.' RESULTS a) Effect of Aging Temperature. The effect of aging temperature on the damping capacity is shown in Fig. 1. The damping capacity reaches a peak of 12 pct after aging at 400° to 425°C) then begins to decrease as the volume fraction of a Mn increases. At higher aging temperatures the structure becomes cubic again with a low damping capacity. b) Stability of the Aged Structure. The damping capacity of the aged alloy decreases with time at room temperature. This process could be accelerated by storing at 100°C, when about 100 hr were required for the damping to fall to half its original value. The results of room temperature and 100°C storage, for times up to 1000 hr, are shown in Fig. 2. The damping capacity starts to decrease after about 24 hr at 18° C and 1 to 2 hr at 100°C. It was found, however, that the damping could be almost completely restored by retransformation. The specimens were held at a temperature above the M, for a short time, 250° C for 5 min, and then quenched. The values of damping capacity for specimens that were aged, stored, and then retransformed are shown by the full points in Fig. 2. AMERICAN participation in the World Engineering Congress in Japan will be generous. Nearly seventy papers have been prepared and for- warded for printing and the A. I. M. E. is well represented in the list. At our San Francisco meeting four of these will be briefly reviewed by the authors for the benefit of those who are unable to go on to Tokyo. They constitute a group dealing with the present economic status as seen by engineers of the world's iron, coal, petroleum and non-ferrous metals. Messrs. Leith, Smith and Tryon, Requa, and Probert have written papers that constitute a notable series. Messrs. Jeffries, Sweetser and Kinney, and other Institute members have written papers dealing more closely with technologic progress. The latest list of delegates and members is printed below, names of A. I. M. E. members being set in italics.

THE resolution presented at the Annual Meeting of the A.I.M.E., calling on Congress to provide now for postwar accumulation of mineral stock piles under Government control, expresses, I think, the nearly unanimous view of the mining industry. As a result of the trying experiences of the first World War, Mr. Baruch, in his report of Dec. 24, 1919, to the President, urged that steps be taken at once to ensure adequate supplies of raw materials for future emergency. In the twenty years that followed, the same program was vigorously urged on Congress by many individuals and agencies, public and private, including the Secretaries of War and Navy, many members of Congress, the Bureau of Mines, the Planning Committee for Mineral Policy appointed by President Roosevelt, the A.I.M.E., the Mining and Metallurgical Society, and others.

MR. CHAIRMAN: Congratulations! Your four-ring milling show this year was a dandy. It cleared our minds, for a few hours at least, of what Hitler, Hirohito, the New Deal, and the tribe in the Treasury are trying to do to strangle American enterprise. We mustn't forget this, but it's a relief to get our thoughts away from it occasionally. GRINDING-There was a further contribution to the excellent work that the Allis-Chalmers laboratory staff has been doing for the grinding fraternity in compiling-and publishing-a carefully quantitative list of comparative resistances of ores and other materials to comminution (T.P. 1579, Bond-Maxson). A diagnostic accuracy of ± 10 per cent was claimed for estimates based on these figures. Are they really that good? How about some of you men in the field writing M&M about it?

THE area discussed lies south of Canadian River in Hutchinson County, Texas, covering approximately 10 m. east and west and 4 m. north and south. Development is carried on in the manner usual in standard tool operations. No outstanding divergence from the usual methods is necessary as wells are completed in 35 to 55 days to approximately 3000 ft. Most of the time is lost in the upper part of the hole and is usually caused in driving pipe of larger sizes. After approximately 1500 ft., little trouble occurs. A comparison of 13 contractors drilling for Phillips Petroleum Co. gave the following averages: Drilling time from 32 to 63 days with a daily footage of from 49 to 87 ft. per day. The rigs furnished are National turnbuckle type with 6-in. irons and steel wheels.

The spatial distribution of the deformation modulii around the CSM/ONWI test facility was determined using an NX version of the CSM cell. Approximately 840 modulus measurements were made in six rings (each ring containing seven holes each 6 m in length) of boreholes. These parallel rings were spaced at 2.4 m intervals along the room. Contour plots of the modulii revealed that the depth of the blast damage zone varied both with perimeter position and distance away from the opening. The maximum depth of disturbance appeared to be of the order of 60 cm. At locations removed from the opening, the variability in modulus was quite high reflecting the presence of joints, faults, shear zones and foliation. A comparison of rock mass modulii (ER) with those obtained from the laboratory testing of core (E), revealed that ER [=] 0.5 E.

The second underground coal gasification experiment conducted by ERDA's Laramie Energy Research Center at a site near Hanna, Wyo., was completed on Jul. 30, 1976. During the experiment production reached 0.32 blm3/d (12 M cu ft/d) of 6.9 w/m3 gas (175 Btu per cu ft). Approximately 6100 tonnes (6700 tons) of coal were gasified during the experiment. Energy return ratios of 4.5 to 5.3, coal gas thermal efficiencies of 76 to 89%, and overall process efficiencies of 65 to 74% were achieved during the second Hanna experiment. This paper describes the experiment and the results obtained with emphasis given to the determination of the energy recovered relative to energy consumed in conducting the test. Data from this determination are compared with previously published data from the first test conducted at Hanna during 1973-74.

Tensile data indicate that over the range of strain rates 10-5 to 10-1 sec-1 and in the temperature range 298° to 743°K the flow stress at a given temperature may be expressed as: C0 = Cem where m changes abruptly at a critical strain rate of 10-2 sec-1. The Zener-Hollomon parameter was tested and found to be invalid except at temperatures exceeding 700° K. Values of AH calculated for temperatures above 700°K ranged from 30 to 47.5 kcal per g-mole. ThE flow characteristics of aluminum and aluminum alloys as a function of temperature and strain rate have been of interest to various experimenters for many years. Trozera et al.1 determined tensile flow curves for pure aluminum and concluded that the combined effect of temperature and strain rate on the flow stress could be related using the Zener-Hollomon parameter. More recently, Hockett2 proposed a relationship between compressive flow stress, temperature, and true strain rate which could be represented by a surface. Holt et al.3 studied strain rate effects on flow stress in a number of aluminum alloys at room temperature. It was determined that there is a critical strain rate above which a strain rate effect is observed. It was also reported that the strain rate sensitivity was significant in aluminum alloys in the "0" condition only. In a recent review paper McQueen4 has considered a number of mathematical expressions which have been used to describe the relationship between stress, strain rate, and temperature. These expressions have been applied to the flow characteristics of a number of different metals and alloys including aluminum. In the present work the strain rate sensitivity of 7075-0 aluminum was determined in the temperature range of 298° to 743°K. The tensile flow stress at 0.2 pct offset was obtained over a nominal strain rate range of 10-5 to 10-1 sec-1. EXPERIMENTAL Threaded tensile specimens were cut from a single heat of 7075-T6 aluminum. The composition of this heat is given in Table I. The test bars had a gage section 1.5 in. long by 0.250 in. diam and conformed to ASTM specification E-8-57T. After machining, the bars were annealed at 413° ± 10°C for 2 hr. They were then cooled to 260°C in 3 hr, and finally air cooled to room temperature. This treatment is commonly used to produce the "0" condition. Load-time curves at constant crosshead speeds were obtained at various temperatures using an Instron testing machine. Crosshead speeds ranged from 0.002 to 40 in. per min. A three-zone resistance tube furnace was used for the elevated-temperature tests. Temperatures were measured at three points along the gage length by means of suitably placed thermocouples. Each tensile bar was held at temperature for 30 min prior to testing and the maximum temperature variation along the gage length was kept below 1°C. In all, 275 samples were tested and each data point plotted is an average of at least two tests. In many cases the point represents up to six tests. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Values of the flow stress at 0.2 pct offset at six different temperatures are plotted vs strain rate on log-log coordinates in Fig. 1. PENNSYLVANIA ANTHRACITE LOCAL SECTION On Saturday evening, Jan. 31, 1914, about 40 members of the Institute met at the Hotel Sterling, Wilkes Barre, Pa., for the purpose of discussing plans for the formation of a local section in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. President Rand; Prof. Joseph W. Richards, of the Board of Directors; Dr. H. M. Chance, Chairman of the Committee on Coal and Coke, and Secretary Stoughton were among the guests present. R. V. Norris acted as Master of Ceremonies, and the arrangements were all made in advance by a Committee under the leadership of Charles Enzian, to whom an enthusiastic vote of thanks was accorded at the dinner. An address was made by President Rand, followed by .Professor Richards, who outlined the procedure necessary for the formation of a Local Section. Addresses were then made by W. J. Richards, F. W. Chase,. C. F. Huber, R. J. Foster, F. A. Hill, H. M. Chance, Bradley Stoughton, and others, after which a rising vote was taken, and it was unanimously decided to petition the Board of. Directors for the establishment of the Pennsylvania -Anthracite Local Section. More than the required number of members then signed -the petition, and President Rand announced the appointment of a Committee to organize the Section and arrange for a meeting in accordance with their By-Laws, consisting of R. V. Norris, W. J. Richards, R. J. Foster, Edwin Ludlow, C. F. Huber, Charles Enzian, Douglas Bunting, F. A. Hill, and J. M. Humphrey.

During the driving of the main haulage level at the Copper Mountain mines of the Canada Copper Corpn., Ltd., near Princeton, B. C., some very rapid driving was done, though no claim for a world's record is made. Conditions, however, were unfavorable for economical operations. The cost of power was high, for the fuel was of poor grade; besides, during the time the work was in progress, very little other power was needed so that most of the power cost was charged against the footage. The transmission line consisted of No. 4 galvanized iron wire with the result that the line lass was considerable. The voltage transmitted was about 30,000. The plant was operated under a lease, which was due to expire about the same time this work was supposed to be completed; an extension was refused, therefore speed was most important. The plans called for a straight adit 2900 ft. (884 m.) in length. At a point 2800 ft. (853 m.) from the portal, two raises were to be put up to the next nearest workings, a difference in elevation of about 800 ft. (243 m.). One of these was to be a two-compartment hoistway and the other a zigzag ore pass, or muck run. A location for these raises had been determined by a number of diamond-drill holes, but the material to be penetrated by the adit was not known. It seemed imperative to get the tunnel work completed as rapidly as possible, in

Most early development and application of electromagnetic prospecting methods took place in Scandinavia, where geological conditions favor their use. In other parts of the world these methods have aroused cycles of interest, but in Scandinavia they have been used continuously and successfully since the 1920's. Electromagnetic methods may be classified into two general groups. One group includes methods in which the source of the electromagnetic field remains stationary while the receivers are moved about to explore the area. The other includes procedures in which the energizing and receiving systems are moved together. Other classifications could be based on the size of the energizing source, the particular components of the electromagnetic field which are measured, or the mode of transporting the equipment. The difference between fixed-source and moving-source methods, however, is of such great fundamental importance that it will be emphasized in this discussion. FIXED-SOURCE METHODS Essentially, a fixed-source method consists of the measurement of electromagnetic fields about the source. The mutual coupling between the source and the earth is constant, but the mutual coupling between the receiver and the earth (unless the earth is homogeneous) and also between the source and the receiver changes at each station. The results are usually normalized by relating the field data to the calculated free space or primary field. Turam and Radio Reference Signal Methods: The turam or two-frame* (see Fig. 1A) is probably * Turam means two-coil. the most common fixed-source method. The energizing source is an insulated cable grounded at both ends or formed into a large rectangular loop. Measurements are taken along a traverse at 5 to 50-meter intervals using two small receiving coils, the lagging coil being placed at the position previously occupied by the leading coil. The complex ratio (i.e., inphase and out-of-phase ratios) of the voltages induced in the two coils is measured. Operating frequency range is about 100 to 800 cps. In a typical turam survey a straight, grounded cable several kilometers long is laid out parallel to the probable strike of the ore deposits or conducting strata being sought. An area extending 1 or 2 km on each side of the cable, and within 1 or 2 km of the ends of the cable, is surveyed. Measurements are made at stations 5 to 25 m apart along traverses perpendicular to the cable. Measurements may be made along lines parallel to the cable to serve as base lines for the traverses or for other special purposes. Commonly the receiving coils are oriented with their planes horizontal so that only the vertical component of the field is measured. If additional information is required, one of the hori- zontal components may also be measured by orienting the coils with their planes vertical. In a modified turam technique developed recently for both ground and airborne measurements (Fig. 1B) the amplitude of the complex voltage induced in a single receiving coil is measured and its phase compared with that of a reference signal transmitted from the energizing system by a radio frequency carrier. Thus the un-normalized field is obtained directly, whereas with the turam method it is obtained by calculation from the ratios. The turam method and its modifications have a greater working depth than the other electromagnetic procedures used in ore prospecting. Under favorable conditions conductors have been located at depths of 200 to 300 m. A modified turam method with one of the electrodes grounded in the upper end of a plunging orebody was used to follow the extension of this body to a depth of 200 m beneath a layer of conducting schists. Straight grounded cables are usually preferred to insulated loops because they are easier to lay out and because they often make the method more sensitive. The greater sensitivity of a grounded cable is a result of ground return currents which may flow in the orebodies in addition to the eddy currents caused by induction from the current in the cable. Anomalies in the vertical field due to eddy currents are characterized by a correspondence between high values for the inphase component and positive out-of-phase components and/or low values for the inphase component and negative out-of-phase components. Also the inphase component may approach zero, but it does not become negative. In very long continuous conductors that are parallel to a grounded cable the effect of ground return currents may far exceed the effect of eddy currents. These ground return currents cause a lack of correspondence between the inphase and out-of-phase components and may cause negative inphase or anti-phase components. It becomes difficult to carry out the measurements and often difficult to interpret the results. Such results immediately suggest the presence of graphitic strata, however, since ore deposits are rarely extensive enough to accumulate sufficient ground return current to cause these results. A cable laid out perpendicular to the strike or an insulated loop is sometimes used in areas where graphitic schists and slates are present. Anomalies are then completely or almost entirely due to eddy currents and are easier to interpret. The measured voltage ratios are normalized by either subtracting or dividing by normal field ratios calculated from free space considerations. The normalized ratios are then plotted as individual profiles. When significant anomalies occur in the ratio measurements, the actual normalized fields are calculated by beginning with a measured or an assumed value for the field at a point near the cable and successively multiplying this value by the normalized ratios. There is a similarity between this process and a numerical integration of the ratio curve. Conversely, in many respects the ratio curve is similar to the first derivative of the field curve.

A new instrument for measuring bulk and grain vol-urnes is described, and compared in accuracy with two modifications of Nutting's method, All three methods are reasonably fast, and in all three the probable error in the determinations of bulk volume can be kept down to about 0.1 to 0.2 per cent. INTRODUCTION The new pycnometer described in this paper is designed to give speed without sacrificing accuracy. Some time ago Russell1 described a somewhat similar appa-ratus; however, the instrument described in the present paper is more accurate. Nutting' designed the pycnom-eter shown in Fig. 1 (A and B), and Pirson3 has shown points like those of Fig. 1-D. The procedure described in this paper for using Nutting's pycnometer has been modified from that used by Nutting. CHOICE OF LIQUIDS The best liquids for measuring grain volumes are hydrocarbons or chlorinated hydrocarbons which evaporate slowly. Trimethylbenzene or mesitylene, triethylben-zene, carbon tetrachloride, and tertalin have been used for this purpose. Any of these liquids or mercury may be used for measuring bulk volume. PREVENTING ERRORS DUE TO INVASION OF LIQUID Errors due to the invasion of the porous, permeable bulk samples by the liquid of measurement may be prevented or greatly reduced by using mercury, by applying an impervious coating, or by soaking the bulk samples in the liquid of measurement until bubbles cease issuing from them. Errors are produced only by the invasion of the samples which occurs between movement when the samples are weighed in air and the moment the weight of liquid displaced by the sample in the pycnometer is determined. No error is produced by varying degrees of filling of the pore space of the samples by the liquid of measurement. The excess liquid should be wiped from the samples immediately before the weight in air W1, is determined, and they should be placed in the pycnometers immediately. OPERATION OF NEW INSTRUMENT The new pycnometer is shown in Fig. 2. It consists of two glass parts which fit together at a ground glass joint. The spaces J and D are connected by fine glass tubes E, and the space J must be larger than the space D by at least the volume of the largest sample to be tested. The projections H afford a grip for twisting when the two parts tend to stick together. The position of the sample in mercury is shown by I, and in other liquids by M. THIS note reports the results of some attempts to metastably extend the primary solid solubilities of tin, antimony, and silicon in silver by rapidly quenching these binary alloys from the melt. The procedures employed for alloy preparation, quenching, and Debye-Scherrer X-ray diffraction measurements have been described elsewhere. The lattice parameters obtained for the fcc structures in Ag-Sn and Ag-Sb alloys are presented in Fig. 1, together with the results of Owen and Roberts.4 Alloy compositions are believed to be within ± 0.2 at. pct on the basis of negligible weight losses during preparation and reproducibility of the lattice spacings. Diffraction lines from hcp phases were also detected: the relative visual intensities of the fcc (200) and hcp (10.2) lines were estimated as shown in Table I. The intensities were m for the (200) and w for the (10.2) in a quenched 13.6 at. pct Sn alloy: a lattice spacing for the fcc structure could not be reliably obtained, however. As seen from Fig. 1, the lattice parameters vary linearly with composition up to 8., at. pct Sb and 13." at. pct Sn, respectively, which may be compared with the maximum equilibrium solid solubilities5 of 7.2 at. pct Sb and 11.5 at. pct Sn, respectively. The presence of the hcp phases, which were found together with the fcc phases, is a consequence of the competition1,3 in the nucleation and growth processes during solidification. Both the fcc and hcp phases must be of the same composition for those alloys in the range where lattice parameters increase linearly with solute concentration. Despite much effort with quenched alloys of several silicon concentrations, it has not been possible to obtain lattice spacings of sufficient precision to establish the variation of lattice parameter with composition or the maximum metastable solid solubility: the equilibrium data5 suggest little primary solid solubility of silicon in silver. For alloys containing less than 16 at. pct Si, the Si (111) diffraction line was not observed. For alloys containing 10 to 25 at. pct Si, faint low-angle lines were detected and these could be indexed as the (10.0), (00.2). and (10.1) reflections of an hcp structure with a = 2.87 + 3A. c = 4.52 ± 3A, and c/a = 1.57 ± 2. The 16 at. pct Si alloy was quenched to, and examined at. liquid nitrogen temperatures without any change observed in the proportion of the hcp phase. The Cle Elum nickeliferous iron deposit is in Kittitas County, Washington, in a rugged, mountainous region about 23 miles north of the town of Cle Elum. The Biewett Pass deposit, which is similar in character and occurrence, is in Chelan County, about 18 miles east of the Cle Elum deposit. A more or less continuous ore zone may extend between the two deposits, since iron ore is reported to have been discovered at Iron Mountain, which lies directly between them. The ore probably was formed by meta-morphism of laterite resulting from Ieach-ing of serpentine derived from peridotite. It consists largely of magnetite grains distributed through a matrix of limonitic material containing a small amount of hematite and chromite. Many of the chromite grains have shells and inclusions of magnetite. The magnetite grains range in size from 1200-mesh to 1/4-in., the average size being 48 to 65-mesh; the chromite grains range from 20 to 150-mesh. The gangue minerals are olivine and serpentine with a small, amount of chlorite, and appear both as very thin bands in the ore and 's minute fragments in the limonitic matrix. The nickel is present as minUte inclusions of a nickel silicate mineral within the magnetite and gangue par- ticles, varying in size from 1500 to about 280-mesh. Detailed analyses of 3000-lb. lots of Cle Elum and Blewett Pass ore are given in Table I. Preliminary Tests Attempts to beneficiate the ore by ore-dressing methods, including various 'cornbinations of sink and float, tabling, jigging, flotation, and magnetic separation, were consistently unsuccessful. A wide variety of roasting and leaching tests were made on both raw and reduced ore, but in most of the tests little or no nickel was extracted, and in none did the extraction exceed 50 Per cent. The Ti-Al system certainly merits the investigative attention it has been receiving and this latest contribution by Blackburn is therefore to be welcomed. The titanium-rich end of the phase diagram shown here, as well as the diagram by crossley,17 Clark et a1.,18 and Tsujimoto and Adachi,29 reveal no other intermediate phase than Ti3A1, although a previous work by Ence and Margolin20 had reported an additional intermediate phase. Since then, Buerger Precession pictures of single crystals of 10.5, 11.5, and 12.5 wt pct A1 were made at New York university21 and the extinctions were found to be typical of a D6h a Ti structure. Some superlat-tice spots and/or streaks suggesting the presence of an Mg3Cd structure, i.e., Ti3Al, were also found. Since these specimens had been quenched from the y region20 and had revealed a Ti, it was concludedz1 that y does not exist and the structures interpreted as m + y could not be so considered. The absence of normal two-phase behavior in these structures had been indicated in the paper. Accordingly, the two-phase region y + 6 becomes a + Ti3Al and there is some agreement between the results of Blackburn and of Ence and Margolin20 as to both shape and existence above 900°C of an a + Ti3Al field. Crossley 17 proposed that Ti3Al is a line compound which decomposes congruently at 900°C. It is difficult to discount entirely the fact that clear two-phase structures, varying in amount with position in the two-phase field, could be detected above 900°C by Ence and Margolin.20 Precipitation during quenching could not have been so regular and the twin-phase syndrome17 does not apply. The heat treatment and quenching technique was essentially the same as was used by Crossley, whereas Blackburn, who used a rapid quenching procedure, also showed a two-phase a + Ti3A1 field above 900°C. If the two-phase field exists above 900° C, it is easy to picture a two-phase field which could account for the data of Crossley below 900°C without invoking a line compound existence of Ti3A1. All that would be necessary would be an 0 + Ti3Al/Ti3Al boundary which curved sharply to higher aluminum contents below 900° C. It is clear that the controversy must be solved by techniques which obtain data at elevated temperatures without quenching. It is conceivable that the difference in width of the a + Ti3N fields reported by Blackburn and by Ence and Margolin is due to the longer annealing times used by the latter investigators. The cold rolled textures of iodide titanium and of three samples of commercial titanium were examined using the Schulz-Decker Geiger counter technique. The iodide titanium and two of the three samples of commercial titanium showed a (0001) [1010] texture rotated 30' toward the transverse direction about an axis in the rolling direction. The third sample of commercial titanium showed a double texture. THE metals of the hexagonal system tend to deform similarly if the c/a ratios are similar. Thus titanium, zirconium, and beryllium, with c/a ratios of 1.601, 1.590, and 1.570, respectively,l should have similar cold rolled textures. The cold rolled texture of high purity iodide titanium has been described as (0001) [1010] rotated 30" toward the transverse direction about an axis in the rolling direction.' The texture of zirconium has also been reported as (0001) [1010] with a transverse rotation from the ideal position of approximately 30" about an axis in the rolling direction." This texture differs from that reported for titanium however since a continuous spread of (0001) poles toward the transverse direction was reported rather than distinct (0001) maxima 30" from the rolling plane normal. Beryllium has a texture similar to that of zirconium although the angle of transverse rotation of the (0001) poles is much less.' These three metals thus show a common type of cold rolled texture, as yet unexplained, which can be described as (0001) [1010] with various degrees of rotation toward the transverse direction about an axis in the rolling direction. Since titanium showed the greatest degree of rotation from the (0001) [1010] position, the cold rolled texture of titanium was re-examined using a semiquantitative Geiger counter X-ray technique to obtain more accurate experimental data from which a theoretical interpretation of this new type of hex- agonal rolling texture could be developed. The cold rolled textures of iodide titanium and of three samples of commercial titanium were determined. Table 1 gives the analyses of the titanium samples. Experimental Procedure Preparation of Samples: Prior to the final rolling operation each of the samples was given an initial reduction of approximately 50 pct and annealed to remove the gross effects of any previous treatments. Samples were annealed in vacuum, high purity helium, and air to determine whether annealing atmosphere had any effect on the cold rolled textures developed. All samples were annealed 1 hr at 800°C. Grain size determinations were made using the formula, 1.075 in which n is the number of grains counted in an area A (in sq mm) and M is the magnification of the area counted.' This formula gives the diameter between opposite flats assuming hexagonal grains. At least three areas containing more than sixty grains each were counted in each grain size determination.
