THE lattice parameter of the ß form of pure titanium has been measured at elevated temperature.', ' No attempt was made, however, to correct the parameter obtained to room temperature. In the course of phase diagram studies at Armour Research Foundation and elsewhere, the variation of ß-phase lattice parameter with composition has been established in a number of binary and ternary systems involving titanium. It was possible to extrapolate in these instances to 100 pct Ti to find the apparent lattice parameter of ß titanium at room temperature. Table I lists the results thus obtained. The suggested value for the lattice parameter of ß titanium is the average of the extrapolated values 3.276 ±0.003 kX. This suggested value gives an interatomic distance in ± titanium of 2.837 kX and hence a Goldschmidt atomic diameter (coordination number 12) of 2.925 kX. The latter agrees closely with the value of 2.93 given by Hume-Rothery." From the data of Adenstedt and coworkers' it was possible to determine by extrapolation the mean coefficient of linear expansion for /3 titanium in the range from room temperature to 1000°C. This value, 10.1x10-8 per degree C, compares with about 11x10-8 for a titanium in a similar range." It was thus possible to calculate the parameter at 900 °C. The value of 3.305 kX agrees well with 3.3065 given by Eppel-sheimer.' The majority of values reported in the literature7-', ' were given as Angstroms. In at least one case, ref. 8, it was shown that they actually represented kX units. The source of this confusion appears to be that a large number of tables of X-ray emission spectra list wavelengths as Angstroms and give values in kX units. The accepted conversion factor for kX units to Angstroms (10.' cm) is 1.00202. Thus the parameter of ß titanium suggested corresponds to 3.282A. References J. H. de Boer, W. G. Burgers, and J. D. An exploratovy study was made to deternzine the feasibility of preparing beryllium by the metallother-. mic reduction of beryllium oxide. The procedure involved heating a relatively nonvolatile metal reductant in contact with beryllium oxide in a vacuum. Beryllium vapors formed in the reaction were condensed as a coherent deposit on a heated surface. Reductants tested included tanthanun, yttrium, thorium, Th-Mg, and Zr- Ti alloys, and the hydrides of lanthaniir~z, yttriunz, and zirconiur?7,. Test ten7pevatures ranged from 1350'to 175O' C, and reaction times ranged frot 30 to 100 lzr. In most cases metal recoveries were lola, although yields close to 90 pct of theoretical were obtained with latzthanum, yttrium, and zirconium reductants. In most cases metal deposits were contanzinated by beryllides, /ls/cally of the Beln M or Bel3 M type. BERYLLIUM has a variety of unique properties including light weight (sp gr 1.85), low thermal neutron absorption cross section, high scattering cross section, excellent dimensional stability, high strength to weight ratio, high melting point (1285"C), high specific heat, and high thermal conductivity. Interest in beryllium as a structural material in aerospace and nuclear-reactor applications is based on these properties. In general, the potential of beryllium has been only partially realized, largely because of the brittleness of poly crystalline forms of beryllium, difficulties associated in its fabrication, and joining problems encountered in its use in structural applications. Several excellent books and monographs are available to those interested in the occurrence, extractive metallurgy, and utilization of beryllium.1"* Although an extensive amount of research on beryllium has been in progress during the past 10 years, much of the work has been concerned either with the so-called "ductility problem" or with the development of methods of fabrication and evaluation of properties of various commercial or purified grades of metal. A recent survey of the literature indicates that only limited efforts are presently being directed toward developing new methods for reducing beryllium compounds to metal. Two major commercial methods now used to produce beryllium are the magnesium reduction of beryllium fluoride and e lec trow inn ing of beryllium from fused sodium chloride-beryllium chloride salt baths. Only a limited amount of work has been done on the direct reduction of beryllium oxide. Major factors which complicate this method are the great stability of beryllium oxide and the reactive nature of beryllium metal. The stability of the oxide necessitates extremely high reduction temperatures and vacuum operation to liberate beryllium metal vapor and cause reactions of the following type to proceed: XBeO(s) +YM(s)-MYOX(s) + XBe(& As early as 1939, roll' used this reaction for the direct reduction of beryllia by zirconium and titanium, and later in 1952 ~a~el~ studied the reduction of beryl-

Equipment has been developed to utilize natural 8 Hz electromagnetic fields to measure rock resistivities. Telluric and magnetotelluric surveys have detected resistivity variations associated with geological contacts and metallic sulfide deposits. The fundamenfa1 premises of these methods are illustrated by the results of surveys across a Pleistocene-Precambrian contact in the Ottawa Valley and a near-surface sulfide deposit in Northern Quebec. Such interfaces are characterized not only by variations in apparent resistivity, but also, unexpectedly by the spatial anisotropy of the electric fields and the presence of a strong vertical magnetic field component in their vicinity. Standard geophysical electrical and electromagnetic methods (Heiland, 1940) for the determination of the electrical properties of the ground and the search of good electrical conductors necessitate the use of a transmitter and receiver which are coupled galvanically or inductively through the ground. The electrical properties of the ground are deduced from either the transfer function, or the impulse response, of the transmitter — ground — receiver system. Where deep penetration is desired these methods require powerful transmitters whose weight and size increase the cost and reduce the speed of operation. It is possible however, to resort to another class of electrical prospecting methods which employ ambient, natural electromagnetic fields in place of a transmitter.'-' In the audio and subaudio frequency ranges, these fields are generated by thunderstorm activity. At some distance from the seat of the disturbance, the e.m. fields propagate as plane waves with a horizontal magnetic field component. The incident wave, of course, induces currents in the ground. Where the ground is homogeneous the relation between the horizontal magnetic and horizontal electric fields vectors is particularly simple:' /E/ = \[SpT/H/ (1) where: /E/ = magnitude of horizontal electric field in millivolts/kilometer (RMS) /H/ = magnitude of the orthogonal inducing magnetic field in milligammas (RMS) p = rock resistivity in ohm-meters i = frequency of measurement in c/s In practice, the ground is seldom an homogeneous half space, lateral conductivity variations exist, (in the case of base metal prospecting these are the features actually sought) and the two field vectors are no longer simply related. The ratio of E to H is still useful, however, for the determination of an "apparent" ground resistivity. From a theoretical view point, the general problem of a two dimensional fault or dyke anomaly can be separated into two distinct cases. In the first case, where the e.m. energy propagates in a direction normal to the strike, the horizontal magnetic field remains constant and is oriented along the strike of the formation.3 As shown by d'Erceville and Kunetz," all the information about the anomaly is contained in measurements of the electric field component. In fact, away from the interface, the electric fields are proportional to the square roots of the resistivities:

The reaction of carbon in solid solution in a metal with the surface oxide fim on many metals may be inferred from thermo-dynamic calculations for high vacua and high temperature conditions. Holm has recently shown that oxide films may be removed from ferrous materials by heating in a vacuum at high temperatures and that carbon is the essential element in the reaction. considerable work has been described in the literature on the de-carburization reaction. Several general references may been 2,3,4 However, the nature of the mechanism involved in the decarburization is not well understood. Our interest in this reaction resulted from many attempts to degas and to reduce by pure and dry hydrogen the surface oxides on strips of various types Of chrome-nickel alloys. Some of the early experiments On the behavior Of '3 pct chrome-iron in vacua of the order of 5 X lo' mm and at a temperature Of 600°C have been reported.5 These experi-merits showed a 'low reaction with the residual Oxygen Or water vapor in the system and no reaction with hydrogen. This is in accord with thermodynamic data which would lead to the prediction that it is extremely difficult to maintain a hydrogen atmosphere at 600' C pure enough to reduce Crz03 formed On the surface. The crystal structure of the superficial oxide film formed on 13 pct chrome- iron and Nichrome V has been investigated in the thin film range by Gulbransenr Phelps and Hickman,' and shown to be "203. It Was surprising to us to note that when a specimen of Nichrome V containing approximately 80 pet nicke1 and 20 pet chromium was heated to 850°C in a high vacuum, the specimen lost weight. The rate Of weight loss was very temperature sensitive. A study of this reaction in vacua and in a hydrogen atmosphere is the subject of this communication. Type Reactions Let us consider the various reactions which may occur when a metal is heated in vacua, in a hydrogen atmosphere, or in an oxygen atmosphere. The number and kind of reactions will depend upon the chemical nature of the metal, its alloying constituents and the location of the alloying constituents. The metals used in this study are chrome-nickel alloys of the heater type, They consist essentially of chromium, nickel and iron, small amounts of carbon, silicon and manganese and traces of zirconium, calcium, aluminum and magnesium. The trace elements are added to improve the lifetime and other characteristics of the alloy when used as a heater. THE first paper1 of this series described a technique of careful surface preparation by means of which reproducible results may be obtained from potential measurements of the behavior of tin in carbonate solutions with a pH range from 8.4 to 11.2. It then went on to establish the behavior of pure tin electrodes under these conditions and showed that the metal remains active at all times, though the steady potential attained after several hours decreases from I.I2[t] volts at a pH of 12.6 to 0.6 volts at a pH of 8.4. This behavior may serve as a norm with which all other data can be compared. In the second paper,2 small amounts of other anions were added to the carbonate solutions and the conclusion was reached that the common impurities encountered in alkaline materials packaged in tin do not increase corrosion. In fact, in some cases these anions may actually promote the formation of protective films. The present paper rounds out this survey by presenting data on the influence of cations added to the carbonate solutions, as well as the effect of alloy additions to the tin. In many cases the potential data are supplemented with weight-loss measurements. Information is also presented on the effects of some additional anions, the influence of gases above the electrolyte, the behavior of high-purity tin, and the effect of atmospheric oxidation on the corrosion resistance of the above-named alloys. Analysis of the entire body of data discloses some general rules applicable to corrosion in carbonate solutions. The experimental methods used are the same as those previously described. EXPERIMENTAL DATA Cations.-The carbonates of the cations K+, Li+, NH4+, which are soluble, were studied in the same way as the anions, by adding 0.01 mol of the metal carbonate to one liter of 0.2 M sodium carbonate solution, pH 11.2, or to 0.1 M sodium bicarbonate, pH 8.4. The other metallic carbonates are only slightly soluble, of the order of 0 7-3 mols per liter or less, and the sodium carbonate solutions were saturated by adding excess reagent several days before the experiment, shaking frequently, and filtering just before use. The chemicals were c.p. grade in each case except the indium salt. This salt was prepared by solution of the metal in hydrochloric acid and precipitation by addition of Na2CO3. These cations may be divided into two classes, according to their effect on the potential behavior of the tin: (I) normal, (2) passive. To offer a basis of comparison, curves I of Figs. I and 2 are given to illustrate the behavior of tin in carbonate solutions saturated with CaCO3. These curves are the

IN the study of zinc-zirconium1 and zinc-uranium2 systems, vapor-pressure measurements were made in order to establish the equilibrium phase diagrams for a pressure of 1 atm. In each of these systems, only zinc has an appreciable vapor pressure over the temperature range investigated. The zinc pressure was measured over a sufficiently wide temperature and composition range to permit calculation of the standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds ZrZn, ZrZn2, ZrZn3, ZrZn6, ZrZn14 , and U2Zn17. In these calculations the compounds were treated as line compounds. Although the exact composition range was not determined, metallographic and thermal data indicate that the solubility range for these compounds is small. It is to be noted that the compound initially reported to correspond to the formula UZn9, 2 has been shown by the crystal structure work of Makarov and vinogradov3 to correspond to the formula U2Zn17,. The crystal structure is similar to that for the compounds Th2M17, investigated by Florio,4 et al; here M represents iron, cobalt, or nickel. Therefore, thermodynamic calculations are based on the formpla U2Zn17 EXPERIMENTAL The dew-point method employed to measure the vapor pressure of zinc over uranium-zinc alloys has been described previously.2 The same procedure and apparatus were used in measuring the zinc pressure over zinc-zirconium alloys. In the case of alloys in the two-phase region consisting of a zirconium and the compound ZrZn, the Knudsen effusion method was employed to obtain a few values in the temperature range 600" to 560°C. In most cases, tantalum crucibles were used to contain the zirconium alloys. THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OFU2Zn17 A least-squares treatment of the vapor-pressure data obtained for 35 and 65 wt pct U alloys in the temperature range 650° to 940°C gave lOg10PAtm = 7,713/T + 6.33 Here, as in following equations, T represents degrees kelvin and P represents the zinc vapor pressure in atmospheres. The probable errors for the two constants were calculated to be 60.68 and 0.0563, respectively. This relation represents the equilibrium dissociation pressure for the reaction U2Zn17 (s) - 2U(s) + 17Zn(v) The solubility of zinc in solid uranium is negligible and the only additional information required to calculate the free energy of formation of U2Zn17 is the free energy of vaporization of pure zinc. Continuous mining machinery provides the coal industry with one way to compete for a larger share of the total energy market. Various types of machines are discussed and some of the problems with continuous miners, encountered by operators, are reviewed. Equipment manufacturers are working with mine personnel to provide solutions for problems that arise. While coal production over the past 25 or 30 years has been on a horizontal plane, coal's share of the total energy market has declined. To participate more effectively in this total energy market, it is necessary to produce coal more efficiently. It is the obligation of all management, employes, and mining departments to gear the deep mining industry to the rapid progress and changing of today's modern industry. This can be accomplished in the near future with the selection of the proper type of continuous miner best suited to each operator's individual situation. In most mining operations there is tremendous incentive to undertake the continuous mining program. It can reduce the size of the mine greatly by permitting a minimum of working places; it makes pillar recovery work more efficient from the standpoint of overall cost, amount of coal recovered, and safety. The work force can be reduced materially permitting closer and more efficient supervision. It simplifies maintenance because equipment can be more readily standardized. The trend of the coal market favors the use of continuous mining machines. Although there appears to be a general feeling that continuous mining is still a relatively new program and will be slow in replacing conventional mechanical equipment, the fact is that tremendous strides have been made since the first machines were installed in 1948. This program is advancing at approximately the same rate that mobile loading machines replaced hand loading. From 1948 to 1955 there were approximately 450 continuous mining machines in service. In October 1959, a survey revealed that there were more than 700 continuous mining machines in service. Many operators have expressed a desire to undertake this program, but they feel that they could not do so at this time because of one or more of the following reasons: 1) the thickness of their coal seams, 2) seam characteristics, 3) soft bottoms, 4) bad roof conditions, 5) size consist, 6) insufficient flexibility in machines, 7) difficult ventilation problems, and 8) high maintenance costs. With the realization on coal about the same today as it was in 1948, or slightly less and since coal is still failing to participate to a greater degree in the total energy market, it is not surprising that the coal industry is desperately exploring more economical methods for deep mining. The manufacturers are aware that the coal industry is willing to invest in continuous miners if the equipment is built for maximum flexibility, will produce higher tons per man, and assure long life between overhaul programs. CONTINUOUS MINING MACHINES Before discussing details regarding the selection of a continuous miner, let us have a preview of some of the continuous mining machines which are available to the coal industry today. Jeffrey Manufacturing Co.: The machine shown is the Jeffrey 76 A.M. Colmol. This is their most widely used miner, and has been particularly successful in central Pennsylvania and in high-wall mining in western Kentucky. One of the outstanding features of this auger-type miner is its portability. The entire mining range can be changed from its lowest point to the maximum height without stopping the mining operation. Jeffrey 76 B.M. Colmol: This machine is similar to the 76 A.M. model; however, it is built bigger and stronger for a mining range of 50 1/2 to 72 in. This is the model that is now available (Fig. 2). Jeffrey has added two arms to the top row, omitted the odd arm in the bottom row, thus permitting a 50 pct larger throat opening. This eliminates one

THE annual meeting of the Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E. was marked by the most delightful cordiality and warm spirit of welcome on the part of the members of the New York Section and an equally charming spirit of cooperation and appreciation on the part of the visitors. On Monday Mrs. Ernest H. Wolfes and Mrs. Charles A. Bohn had charge of registration and most efficiently .provided everyone with the necessary tickets and badges. The reception hall and regisfration booth were gay with beautiful flowers that reflected the welcoming spirit one found there. The smooth efficiency with which the whole program ran was due largely to the tireless efforts of Mrs. Donald M. Liddell and Mrs. Louis D. Huntoon, joint chairmen of the Ladies' Committee, and Miss Margaret Callow, chairman of the Junior Committee. After registering, the ladies proceeded to- the fifth floor, where they had luncheon with the members of the A. I. M. E. On that day Mrs. W. H. Bassett and Mrs. Lucius W. Mayer were the hostesses.

Meramec Mining Co., a joint venture of Bethlehem Steel Corp. and St. Joe Minerals Corp., mines and pelletizes iron ore at the Pea Ridge mine. The Pea Ridge property is located near Sullivan, Miss., about 113 km (70 miles) southwest of St. Louis. The ore body was delineated in the mid-1950's by St. Joe during a lead exploration program. The first test holes drilled on the Pea Ridge magnetic anomaly revealed the presence of a large magnetite deposit; further drilling in 1956 and 1957 confirmed that the ore body was mineable. Meramec Mining Co. was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began late in the year. Production began in April 1964. The ore body is overlain by about 400 m (1300 ft) of flat-bedded sediments. It is tabular, about 800 m (2600 ft) long and up to 180 m (1600 ft) thick. It dips about 80° and is of unknown depth. The ore is mainly high-grade magnetite with small zones of specular hematite. The wall rock is a Precambrian rhyolite porphyry.

This paper deals with the reinforcement of igneous rock slopes at three open pit iron ore trines in northern Canada. The pits involved utilize overall slope angles in excess of 60º with ultimate depths in the order of 250 m. Three case studies are described. The first concerns the reinforcement of a 300,000 Ton undercut rock wedge, approximately 70 m in height. This was accomplished using 20 cm diameter steel bales, installed in 25 cm diameter vertical holes, and a cement-sand grout. The second involves the reinforcement of a 40 m wide diabase dyke which had been continuously failing as the pit deepened. A unique form of rock reinforcement was used in that the entire mass of the undercut dyke was not pinned to the wall. Rather an interlocking effect between individual blocks within the dyke was relied upon. A third concerns the reinforcement of a berm which was undercut by the contact between the ore and waste. This reinforcement was also accomplished using a combination of steel bales, rods and cement grout.

With steadily increasing prices for imported oil, commercial production of oil from oil shale can become a reality in the near future. Presently we are importing about 43% of our oil needs and this reliance on foreign oil can be reduced by utilizing the vast resources of oil shale in the western US. The oil shale resources in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming, averaging 0.06 m3/ton (15 gal per st) and occurring in beds at least 3 m (10 ft) thick, are estimated at 293 Gm3 (1842 billion bbl) of which only 97 Gdm3 (610 billion bbl) are recoverable with current technology. The full potential of this vast resource can be realized only if significant steps are taken toward improving mining and retorting technology and solving environmental problems. Oil shales with a grade of 0.08-0.10 m3/ton (20-25 gal per st) are amenable to mining and surface retorting; whereas lower-grade oil shales may be recovered by in situ retorting.

ALL previous records were broken by the Iron and Steel Division, in the number of sessions, the number of papers, and the attendance. In addition to ten papers (all preprinted) on properties, structure, aid hardenability of, carbon and alloy steels, eight formal papers were presented on one or more phases of steelmaklng, and a symposium on the determination of hydrogen and nitrogen in steel. This last started at 2 p.m. and was going strong with more than a third of the audience still present at 6 p.m.
