THE fifth annual fall meeting of the Petroleum Division of the A. 1. M. E. went down into history as being one of the best ever held by this Division and marked progress was made in the concentration of sentiment regarding several matters-particularly the principles of unit control or operation of oil pools. The first day's program was devoted to the discussion of well spacing and many valuable data were assembled and presented and the discussions following the reading of the different papers was interesting and spirited. However, throughout the whole trend of the discussion it was noted that in the background there was the idea of unit control of the pool and if such a condition could be secured the well spacing theories could be applied much better than could be hoped for if each lease in the pool was treated as a separate and individual unit.

INTRODUCTION The Alfredo underground mine is one of the three mining operations of Rio Tinto Minera, S.A., all near the community of Rio Tinto in Huelva province of southwest Spain. The other two operations are Corta Atalaya open pit (Pyrite ore) and Cerro Colorado open pit (Copper ore 1. Underground mining of Alfredo Mine for pyrites started in the nineteenth century and continued without interruption until 1979 when it was discontinued due to economical reasons. In 1972, a new project was started for the mining of copper bearing ores on the footwall of the pyrite deposit. This copper ore is locally named “Cloritas” and it forms a nearly vertical and tabular shaped orebody which forms an envelope at the footwall of the San Dionisio pyrite orebody. Mining of the Cloritas commenced in 1975 using cut and fill stoping. In 1977, the original project was completely revised which led to the introduction of a bulk mining system to achieve a planned production of 3,000 tonnes of ore per day. This paper covers the economic and planning aspects of the mine and discusses the evolution of the mining method for the Cloritas orebody. A GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE CLORITAS OREBODY The “Masa San Dionisio” (figure 1 ) is a massive sulphide orebody located in the town of Rio Tinto, about 90 kilometres west of Sevilla, Spain. Extensive vein-type sulphide mineralization exists in the volcanic host rocks of the Masa San Dionisio. Within this area of stockwork veins, there is a higher concentration of copper in the form of chalcopyrite in a zone adjacent to and paralleling the contact with the massive sulphides. This copper envelope is locally referred to as the "Cloritas Orebody” and the ore within it is called "Cloritas”. The main zone of the Cloritas orebody, (figure 11, is tabular and nearly vertical having a length of 375-400 m east-west, a thickness of 20-50 m north-south, and a vertical extension of 500 m from the surface. In addition to this area, there is a second less important low grade area called zone 2A located to the north of the main zone below 26 Level which, in some sections, is not fully separated from the main zone. MINING METHODS Mining in Rio Tinto area can be traced back to the Phoenecians and the Romans. Modern day mining started with the demand for sulphuric acid during the last half of the nineteenth century. By 1971, more than 33 million tonnes of pyrite had been mined out of Alfredo Mine, (San Dionisio Orebody), using labor intensive drift and fill methods and also by open pit method. During the last decade, underground mining of the pyrite had become uneconomic due to lower prices and a slackening demand for pyrite, and the underground mining operations for pyrite were finally stopped in 1979. In 1971, a major change in the long range mining plans for Masa San Dionisio was established. THE topography at the Stan Trg mine facilitated early exploration by adits; in consequence adit levels were developed at horizons 865, 795, and 760 meters above sea level, and the levels in the mine 'are named according to their elevation. The shaft was drilled on US government land m the Piceance Creek basin and was funded by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM). It was drilled to 723 m to provide access to rich deposits of oil shale, nahcolite, and dawsonite for geotechnical test work and environmental mining research. Rotary drilling and dual-string, reverse-air, jet-assist circulation methods were used. Drilling required eight months. Site preparation, running, and cementing the casing required another four months. A 2.44-m ID steel welded casing, 508 mm thick was installed and 2.7 kt of cement were slurried and pumped into the annulus.

Single crystals of hcp cobalt, 3 mm in diameter and up to 35 cm long, were grown using an electron-beam, zone-melting technique. The martensitic-phase transformation was studied in single-crystalline and polycrystalline specimens by making length-change measurements as a function of temperature under various elastic compressive stresses. Upon thermal cycling, single-crystalline or polycrystalline specimens repeatedly transformed almost entirely on the same variant of close-packed plane provided the maximum temperature did not exceed 600°C. Cycling to 1000°C resulted in transformation on more than one {111} variant. This behavior is termed multivariance. The multivariant transformation occurred very rapidly at an M, temperature 2° to 6°C lower than the M, of a transformation which would result in a single-crystal product. Elastic compressive stresses (up to 253 g per sq mm) tended to lower the A, and raise the M, temperatures, decreasing the width of the temperature vs dilatation hysteresis loop. The transformation habit plane and transformation shear direction of an as-grown single crystal were not grossly affected by elastic compressi?ie stress. This was evidenced by similar dilatations on the temperature us dilatation loops joy specimens with and without compressive stress. A dislocation mechanism is proposed to explain the observed results. IT has been shown that, on heating, cobalt transforms martensitically from the hcp to the fcc phase.' The transformation habit plane is (0001)hcp || (lll)fcc and the transformation shear direction is (1010)hcp || (112)fcc. The transformation involves a shear of 1g°28', which may be achieved by a shearing of a/6(112) of every two planes with respect to the plane beneath, thus changing the ABABAB stacking of hcp to the ABCABC stacking of fcc. Associated with the phase change is a 0.3 x 10"3 contraction in the habit plane and a 4.2 X 10"3 expansion perpendicular to the habit plane resulting in a 3.6 x X volume increase on heating.' On cooling, an identical volume decrease takes place. The temperature at which the fcc phase begins to form on heating (A,) is reported as 430°C, and the temperature at which the hcp phase begins to form on cooling from an elevated temperature (A&) is reported as 390oC1,3 Consequently, temperature vs dilatation plots have the form of a hysteresis loop. If heating or cooling is reversed during a transformation, a smaller hysteresis loop results. Upon heating, the transformation is always complete; whereas, fcc is often retained at room temperature as a metastable phase entrapped in the polycrystal-line hexagonal matrix.1,4,5 Two obstacles in the theory of the allotropic-phase transformation of cobalt have been: 1) a detailed knowledge of the product nucleus, and 2) a plausible method of propagation of the transformation. Bilby,8 christian, 7 and seeger 8,9 have suggested a "pole mechanism" as a means of propagation of partiai dislocations from plane to plane. A pole dislocation and a Shockley partial come together at a node. The a/6(112) Shockley partial rotates about the pole dislocation effecting the transformation shear. The pole dislocation must have a 2a/3(111) screw component which causes extension of the transformed region by two atomic planes with each full rotation of the Shockley partial. Bollmannl0 suggested, on the other hand, that transformation propagation occurs due to the stress fields of intersecting (111)-type stacking faults. As faults intersect, a stress distribution is set up about their intersection which is in turn reduced by the emergence of another fault on the second nearest plane. This process continues with the final result of a complete phase transformation. In view of the similarities between deformation and transformation in cobalt, the effect of stress on the transformation would, hopefully, yield valuable information concerning nucleation and propagation. In the present work single-crystalline and polycrystalline specimen length changes were measured as a function of temperature at various compressive loads. PROCEDURE Several orientations of single crystals of hcp cobalt in lengths up to 25 cm were grown by electron-beam floating zone melting from 99.95 and 99.999 pct, 3-mm-diam cobalt rod as supplied by Johnson

Recently equations have been presented by Rose and Bruce' and by Rose², showing how the relative permeability of a reservoir rock may be determined from the capillary character of the rock. In particular, equations were developed to show the relationship between capillary pressure and the effective permeability to the wetting phase in a poly-phase flow system. The equations are as follows (nomenclature the same as in the Rose and Bruce paper) Rose and Bruce assume that the average length of path (L,), which the wetting fluid follows in flowing through a porous media is independent of the saturation to the wetting phase, so that 1 is a constant dependent only on the k rock, and the permeability to the wetting phase is a function of the saturation and of the capillnry pressure: In measuring the flow of ekctric current through partially saturated core samples, it has been observed that the electrical resistance usually is not a simple linear function of saturation. This fact indicates that the average length of path in the flow of electric current is not independent of saturation, but rather that the tortuosity of the path depends upon the average saturation to the conducting fluid as well as upon the characteristics of the rock. itself. Inasmuch as the flow of fluid and the flow of electric current in many respects are analogous, it may be indicated further that the length of path for fluid also may not be independent of saturation. The following relationship can be derived to express the resistance to flow of electric current through a core sample partially saturated with conductive wetting phase, the non-wetting phase being non-conductive: where L is the average length of path followed by the current in flowing through a length L of partially saturated core, where L is the length of current path when the core is fully saturated, and where Rs and R, are the specific resistivities of the partially saturated and saturated core sample, respectively. It will be noted that R., the specific resistivity of the core sample when S, = 1.0, is equal to the "formation resistivity factor"' multiplied by the specific resistivity of the saturating fluid. If it be assumed that the average lengths of path for fluid flow and for the flow of electric current are the same, then equation (5) may be combined with equations (l), (2) and (3) to give the following relationship: The above equation suggests including a correction for tortuosity when calculating the relative permeability of a reservoir rock to a wetting phase. The correction factor may be obtained from the resistivity-saturation relationship. The "semi-pellet" sintering method developed and currently being used at the Fuji Iron & Steel's Hirohata Works is discusssd. It is shown that the method makes fine-sized material easily sinterable and increases sinter production. The operation can be incorporated readily into conventional sintering plants. Sintering plant raw materials currently being used in the Hirohata Works consist of 40 pct pyrite cinder, 40 pct fines resulting from crushing and screening of imported ores, and 20 pct others, such as mill scale and iron sands. Pyrite cinder, a major component in the sinter feed, has been getting finer since 1952, due to the increased grinding required for the improvement of the results in the iron sulfide flotation and to the adoption of FluoSolid roasters in sul-furic acid plants; some fines pass 100-mesh sieve almost completely. Increased use of the fine-sized pyrite cinders in the sinter raw mix resulted in such difficulties as decreased bed permeability, uneven firing conditions, and low yield. In an attempt to study the cause and to find a remedy for this problem, a series of experiments were made, using an 80-kg experimental sintering pan. As a result it was established that, by rolling the fine-sized pyrite cinders into small balls of 10 to 3 mm diam (hereafter called semi-pellets) and mixing them into the sinter raw mix, the bed permeability was improved, the sintering time shortened, and the yield and production rate increased. It is proposed that this new method be called the semi-pellet sintem'ng. In recent years the pelletizing process has taken the spotlight in the agglomeration field for treating fine-sized ores here in Japan as well as in the U.S. and Europe. This process produces pellets suitable for the blast furnace charge as such, and consists of three major operations: fine grinding, balling, and firing. With regard to the firing technique, some problems still appear unsolved. In the semi-pellet sintering, however, several ad- vantages can be claimed: the balling operation is relatively simple because only small-sized balls are shown to be acceptable and the operation can be readily incorporated into the conventional sintering plant, since only balling, not grinding or firing, equipment is needed. Basic test work on the process was initiated in 1954 and favorable results were obtained. Accordingly a pilot plant was built in 1955 and the test work was continued. The semi-pellets thus prepared in the pilot plant were tested further by USing them in the actual sintering pan and their beneficial effects ascertained. In late 1956 a drum-type balling machine (2.4X4 m) was installed and it went into operation in April 1957 in conjunction with the Greenawalt sintering plant (8 pans having dimensions of 7.2 m in length, 3 m in width, and 0.3 m in depth). In October 1958 a cone-type pelletizer, with a 2.2 m diam, and later a disk-type pelletizer were further added in the plant. In the DL sintering plant (2000 tpd), newly built in July, 1960, four disk-type pelletizers (3.2 m diam, 10 tph capacity) were installed. By mixing the semi-pellets thus prepared with the feed, the sintering operation was found to be greatly improved. The results of the basic test work, and the equipment and operation of the semi-pellet sintering operation at the Hirohata Works will be described. ON THE SINTERING CHARACTERISTICS OF FINE SIZED PYRITE CINDERS To ascertain the effect of addition of fine-sized pyrite cinders on the sintering characteristics, a series of measurements on bed permeability was carried out by varying the size distribution of pyrite cinders. The composition of the raw mix used in the tests was fixed at 50 pct pyrite cinder, 20 pct Larap magnetite fines, 30 pct sinter return, and 5 pct coke; only the size distribution of the pyrite cinder was varied. PURPOSE OF UPDATED ESTIMATE FOR MINERAL INVENTORY BLOCKS During the production stage of an open pit porphyry copper mine it was observed that the expected production grade, as determined from the block inventory estimates, often differed greatly from the head grade of ore delivered to the mill. It was determined that, for purposes of production scheduling and monthly forecasting, better in situ grade estimates for mining blocks were necessary. Because all of the bench blastholes were being sampled, and periodic holes were being drilled into the next underlying bench, much more sample data existed than was being used for estimating the grade of nearby mining blocks. It was reasoned that, by periodically updating the mineral inventory block file over the benches scheduled for mining in the next time period using all existing data, better estimates and forecasts for production grade could be made. BLASTHOLE SAMPLE DATA MANAGEMENT The collars of all blastholes in each mined bench were surveyed and assays run on the cuttings representing the full 12-m (40-ft) bench height. The blastholes range from about 5 to 6 m (16 to 19 ft) apart along the front of the bench as well as perpendicular to the front. Overbreakage often left larger spacings between successive blasts. Fig. 17-1 is a plan map of blastholes on a typical mine bench. All blasthole data were keypunched to a format resembling that of the 12-m (40-ft) composite assay data file as follows: [Collar Coordinates Compite Assoy Hole ID Northing East Elewotion Total Copper Oxide Copper] Because of the many blasthole samples available, and in order not to use excessive computer time for running kriged estimates for 30.5 X 30.5 X 12-m (100 X 100 X 40 ft) blocks adjacent to and beneath the mined area, the decision was made to average all the blastholes falling with each 15.2 X 15.2-m (50 X 50-ft) mined block, and use the mean value of the samples as a regionalized variable for purposes of assigning kriged estimates and estimation variance to adjacent unmined blocks. In other words, instead of using individual blasthole samples for making kriged estimates, the holes were grouped by blocks and assay values were averaged and assigned to the centroid of the holes within the block, which was then treated as a single regional variable for purposes of kriging. See Fig. 17-2. VARIOGRAM COMPUTATIONS AND KRlGlNG RESULTS With the many blasthole samples it was possible to compute directional and vertical experimental variograms for both sulfide and nonsulfide copper assays falling within the enriched mineral zone for the full 12-m (40-ft) sample support. Due to the close spaced drilling, excellent definition of the experimental variograms was possible, and the spherical model exhibited good fits. A three-dimensional kriging program was then run over the two or three mine benches involved in the inventory update, and estimated grades reassigned to all mining blocks falling within the range of the new blasthole assay data according to the anisotropisms of the deposit. Better confidence limits could then be assigned to scheduled mining blocks and better short- range forecasts made. An interactive kriging computer program was also applied for the purpose of determining the kriging variance or estimation of error for larger, irregular mining blocks representing the monthly production from a particular bench. The interactive program permitted the operator to enter the limits of the irregular block onto the screen of a cathode ray tube (CRT) as a series of points around the perimeter of individual gridded blocks making up the larger irregular block. The computer then was programmed to calculate the kriging variance of the larger block using all samples fall- ing within range. Thus the limits of estimated grade could be established at any confidence level. Fig. 17-3 illustrates the output from the interactive kriging program showing the sample points entering into the grade and kriging variance computations, and also the kriging coefficient assigned by the computer to each sample.

A rather detailed description of the entire plant and leaching process was given in a paper recently presented to the Institute,I so this paper will cover briefly only the crushing practice of the New Cornelia Copper Co. for the year 1918. The ore, which is mined by steam shovels and loaded in side-dump cars, passes through two crushing plants. These crushing plants were constructed to crush the ore required by a leaching plant of 5000 tons daily capacity, during a crushing period of 16 hours. The primary plant reduces to less than 3 in. (76 mm.) and the secondary plant, to 1/4 in. (6.35 mm.), which is sufficiently fine for satisfactory percolation of solution through the ore in the leaching tanks, and to give-good extraction. The ore is then conveyed to the leaching tanks by a system of 28-in. (71-cm.) belt conveyors. On the way to the leaching tanks, it passes through an automatic sampling plant, where a 1-per cent. sample is taken. From the primary crushing plant, the ore is conveyed by two 36-in. (91-cm.) belt conveyors to a 10,000-ton steel storage bin, with a reinforced-concrete flat bottom. The ore discharges from the bottom of this' bin onto four 20-in. belt conveyors, which deliver it to the four units of crushers in the secondary crushing plant. There is no storage bin between the mine and the primary crushing plant. The ore breaks very coarse, is very hard, and contains a great many boulders, some as large as 4 1/2 by 4 1/2 by 10 ft. (1.3 by 1.3 by 3 m.). Jams form in the bowl of the coarse crusher in the primary crushing plant, as a consequence, and are freed by means of an immense steel hook operated from a 40-ton electric traveling crane. Primary Crushing Plant The primary plant consists of one No. 24 Gates, style K, gyratory crusher, followed by four Gates No. 8, style K, gyratory crushers. All

Monolithic electrooptical mosaics of 2500 photo-transistor elements with internal row and surface column interconnections have been fabricated by epitaxial-planar diffsion techniques. Unique access to any elemed of the mosaic is provided through one of the fifty X and one of the fifty Y external leads. The sensor mosaic can be used for imaging applications and has a 1:1 aspect ratio, a resolution of 100 lines per in., a dynamic range in excess of lo3, a sensitivity of 0.5 per pw, element response within a 2:l range over 75 pct of the mosaic, and a minimum detectable signal of the order of 10-' w. Design considerations which ilnpose particclar fabrication yequirements are disctussed along with some of the problems peculiar to the epitaxial and planar-dijfision techniqes by which this device is fabricated. The solid-state silicon monolith has an imaging area of 0.5 by 0.5 in. and an element center -to- center spacing of 0.010 in. J monolithic solid-state electrooptical device has been developed as the photon-sensing mosaic for use in an image-converter system.' This system is the solid-state equivalent of the vidicon and can image radiation in the visible and near-infrared regions of the spectrum. The electrooptical image converter has the desirable size, weight, reliability, and low-power characteristics inherent in solid-state devices. It is read out by direct-wire means rather than by beam-scan techniques. The packaged unit is shown in Fig. 1. A selection of material for the sensor was based on considerations of both reliable fabrication techniques and material spectral response. Silicon was selected both for its response from the lower end of :he visible to the long-wavelength cut-off above 11,000A and for its well-developed epitaxial planar-diffused technology. The electrical image is composed of M x N discrete information bits with each bit emanating from one of the individual phototransistor sensors. The interconnected mosaic concept was introduced to provide a structure which is both manageable in its number of leads and compatible with conventional viewing systems which accept XY data. Interconnections along the Y direction are provided by internally diffused strips, while interconnections along the X direction are formed by vacuum-deposited metal surface bars. Unique access to any individual element of the M x N mosaic is available through one of the M and one of the N external leads. PHOTOTRANSISTOR DESIGN A phototransistor structure2 was selected for the discrete photon detectors of which the mosaic is com- posed. Basically, the mode of phototransistor operation is such that incident quanta are absorbed in the base area of the element where they generate electron-hole pairs. If the electrons are liberated within a diffusion length of the depletion region around the collector junction, they will diffuse to this depletion region and be swept across the junction where they account for a small component of the photocurrent. Similarly, the holes which are created within a diffusion length of the emitter junction will diffuse to this region where they forward bias the emitter and so induce injection of minority carriers into the base. This accounts for the substantial transistor photocurrent. This mechanism of operation implies several design and fabrication goals for the individual sensor elements: high electrooptical conversion efficiency, sufficient carrier lifetime in the base regions, and a maximum volume in which photons can be absorbed within a diffusion length from the depletion layer about the junction. Moderately high transistor gain is desirable to permit readout at low light levels; however, very high gain has a deleterious effect on mosaic dynamic range. The mosaic must also be characterized by good uniformity of element response as well as by good isolation between elements. IN dealing with segregation in babbitt, and its effect on the final cast structure, which is a bearing, it is obviously impossible to cover all of the compositions manufactured. Each composition, of course, will exhibit certain specific types of segregation. However, as examples,, two compositions of babbitt are presented: one a tin-base of well-known analysis and the other a lead-base, which in the past few years has found wide usage. Bearings usually are cast either statically or centrifugally; therefore the effect of these two methods on segregation is presented. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A slab of babbitt 1/2 in. thick by 5 in. wide and 17 in. long was cast, using a book mold with the long edge vertical. An A.S.T.M. grade 2 babbitt was used (3.5 per cent copper, 7.5 per cent antimony, remainder tin), to which 0.10 per cent tellurium had been added. Unfortunately, no metal without tellurium was available. The mold to hold the babbitt was heated to approximately 300°F., the temperature being judged by the babbitter. The pouring temperature of the babbitt was 875°F. (470°C.). One slab was made by allowing the babbitt to cool without stirring. The other slab was stirred during the entire cooling cycle. This stirring consisted of a vigorous churning or puddling into the mold until complete solidification had taken place. Three samples were removed from these slabs. One was taken at the extreme bottom, another half way to the top, and another at the extreme top, all at the center of the width. Chemical, macroscopic and microscopic examination was made of all samples. Table I shows the chemical analyses obtained at the described positions [ ] in the slab. The analyses show no serious amount of gravity segregation. Microscopic examination from edge to edge of the slab showed little change in structure. From top to bottom there was a progressive coarsening of the grain size in the stirred slab but little change in the slab that was not stirred (Fig. I). No definite exhibit of segregation could be detected. In line with our experimental study on the tin-base babbitts, we cast an almost duplicate slab using A.S.T.M. Alloy No. 15, containing 0.9 to 1.25 per cent tin, 14.75 to 15.5. per cent antimony, 0.80 to 1.25 per cent arsenic and 0.4 per cent copper. The slab was 16 in. long and 3/8 in. thick, cast with the long side vertical. One slab was allowed to cool normally and the other was stirred continually during cooling.
