In 14-karat gold alloys, as in 10-karat gold alloys,3 the addition of such metals as zinc, nickel, copper and silver produces a wide range of physical and chemical properties such as color, hardness, corrosion resistance and melting points. These important factors made gold alloys desirable in the optical work and for jewelry. In 14-karat gold alloys, as well as in 10-karat or 12-karat, it is possible to have two golds of the same color, one of which will corrode more than the other, although it may be harder. Some of these alloys have been investigated by F. E. Carter,' E. M. Wise,= and L. Sterner Rainer.4 In this group of alloys the gold content of 58.3 per cent (14-karat) was held constant, while the copper varied from 36 to 24 per cent. The balance of the alloy consisted of one, two, or three of the metals silver, zinc, and nickel. All the alloys were melted in an induction furnace and cast into an ingot that measured 3 by 1/4 by 3/4 in. The method of determining the melting points, color determinations and acid test have been discussed in previous papers by the author.2, 3 It is necessary to use small test bars (Fig. I). The tensile bars were annealed at 1300oF. for 20 min. and then air-cooled. There being a very marked drop when the yield point was reached, "the drop of the beam" method was used in determining the yield point. Alloys Gold-copper.zilzc A~loys.—Gold-copper-zinc alloys melt, cast, and labricate easily. The low melting points, however, limit their use to some extent. The physical properties of these alloys are not entirely satisfactory. When the ultimate strength is satisfactory, the elongation and reduction of area are too low (Table I). Gold-copper-sinr-nickel A lloys.—In this group of alloys, in which zinc and nickel replace copper in approximately equal parts (Table I), the yield point, hardness, and ultimate strength increase with the increase of zinc and nickel content, while the reduction of area and elongation decrease. The physical properties are desirable, particularly of the white gold alloys. The alloys of this group are not difficult to cast and fabricate, and most of these colors could be used commercially. Gold-copper-nickel A lloys.—Gold-copper-nickel alloys are similar to the gold-copper-zinc and the gold-copper-zinc-nickel alloys. They do, however, possess high yield point, ultimate strength and hardness, somewhat higher than those of the other two groups mentioned (Table I). Unit Rig & Equipment Co., manufacturer of Lectra Haul trucks, is continually studying methods of reducing the operating costs of large haulage trucks. Reduction of haulage system operating costs is an important goal that equipment operators and equipment manufacturers constantly try to improve on. One of the most variable and important factors affecting operating costs is actual truck operating practices. An examination was centered on methods to optimize truck utilization. It was found that a very effective method of accomplishing this goal would be an automatic truck control (ATC) system to automatically control a fleet of haulage trucks in a predetermined pattern. Economic studies were conducted which showed a very favorable reduction in mine operating costs by use of an ATC system. In 1970, Unit Rig & Equipment Co., in conjunction with SAAB-SCANIA began preliminary development of adapting, for truck use, a proven automated control system, previously used for train systems, small trucks, and military target vehicles. In 1974, the first prototype system was installed on a Lectra Haul M-100 and tested extensively at Unit Rig's test track in Tulsa, OK. This truck and system were then displayed publicly at the 1974 convention in Las Vegas. In 1976, the system was redesigned for production to maximize reliability, ease maintenance, and to accommodate future control and-status reporting developments proposed for haulage trucks. The new design equipment was manufactured, and a full system test will be conducted in an actual open-pit mine for an extended period to evaluate reliability, compile economic data, and obtain application information to evaluate complete mine haulage system conversions to ATC. System Description The ATC system is designed to provide automatic control of all the vehicle functions normally accomplished by the vehicle operator. The basic system consists of the on-board control equipment and the wayside control equipment. The on-board equipment receives commands from the wayside equipment and controls all the truck functions. In addition, on-board sensors monitor all critical truck functions and provide instructions to the truck and system to assure safe operation. The wayside equipment consists of a buried guidewire, block control units and a central controller which provides predetermined signals to the on-board equipment for speed control, steering, and for auxiliary functions (dumping, horn, etc.) through the guidewire located in the truck's path. The wayside equipment also controls vehicle separation, system status, and provides truck location to a central display panel. The central control panel can vary the speed level signals over any segment and can also command an emergency stop to halt all the units. [Fig. 1] illustrates a typical ATC installation. If ATC is used in operations which require flexibility and mobility at the end of the ATC guidance network, the trucks can then be operated by either radio remote control or manually to complete their assigned functions.

DURING the past few years there has been considerable effort devoted to the understanding of radiation effects on materials. The concept of the Frenkel defect and other lattice defects suggests that radiation may alter the rate of many metallurgical phenomena, especially those which are diffusion controlled. In 1953 R. R. Coltman and T. H. ~lewitt' found an appreciable effect on the ordering rate of Cu,Au due to fast neutron bombardment. Since then several rather comprehensive theories have been proposed on radiation enhanced diffusion in solids.2"4 If the energy of the radiation is above the threshold energy for the removal of atoms from their lattice sites, Frenkel defects will be produced. These defects can be produced uniformly throughout a relatively thick specimen by high-energy X-rays permitting bulk property studies without the limitation of sample dimensions. In this work high-purity arsenic containing 30 ppm of impurities was allowed to diffuse from the gase- ous phase at 700°C into single crystals of p-type germanium containing 0.1 ppm of indium. As the arsenic diffuses into the P-type germanium, an n-type layer will form in the diffusion zone. At the p-n junction the concentration ratio of the arsenic to the indium is constant. Experimental Procedures—The germanium specimens, 10 mm by 10 mm by 5 mm, were polished and etched to a mirror finish. The specimens were then sealed off in a vycor glass capsule at 3 x 10"5 mm Hg pressure with a sufficient amount of arsenic powder to produce a one-half atm pressure of arsenic at 700°C. Specimens were annealed at 700°C without radiation. The diffusion coefficient determined from these samples agrees within 8 pct of previous work done by Fuller.' Three specimens were given diffusion anneals at 700°C in a small tube furnace centered beneath the target of a 2-mev Van de Graaff generator. The specimens when in the furnace were 10 cm directly below the target of the generator. These specimens were irradiated continuously during the diffusion run with the Van de Graaff operating at 2 mev with a tube current of 225 to 250 pamp. The intensity of the x-radiation at the surface of the specimen inside the furnace was approximately 4.5 x l05 roentgens per hr. The temperature was controlled within m2°C by a chromel-alumel thermocouple throughout this work with no observed temperature change due to the radiation. Discussion of the paper of GRAFTON M. THRASHER, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 106, October, 1915, pp. 2129 to 2138. RICHARD MOLDENKE, Watchung, N. J.-Mr. Thrasher is to be commended for developing a very interesting comparison between high- and low-carbon and silicon malleable cast irons for an equal degree of chill. His deductions are unquestionably correct, though the application to daily practice is open to serious criticism, from the standpoint of the man who receives the castings, as will be shown later on. Running over some of the points which affect the tests in question: Mr. Thrasher admits that the temperature of pouring has a serious influence on the degree of chill shown in the test plugs he made. This is a well-known fact, and I would like to add that another serious trouble comes from oxidized iron when the heats have been unduly prolonged. Such metal always shows more chilling action for a given silicon and carbon content than normally melted iron. Indeed, the test piece quoted giving the extreme of the chill line (1.07 per cent. Si and 2.47 per cent. total carbon) was such a poor heat, a ferro-silicon addition never "doctoring" up the metal sufficiently to show normal good strength. In spite of these irregularities, which would simply change the curve slightly, I take it that Mr. Thrasher's results can be accepted as reliable enough to establish the relationship of silicon and total carbon as shown. When, however, the claim is made that silicon and carbon can be substituted for each other in mixture-making (a claim which may be perfectly correct metallurgically), a very important factor is forgotten, causing the purchaser of the castings much annoyance. This is the contraction (erroneously called shrinkage) of the castings. They will no longer be true to pattern. The lower the total carbon is allowed to drop, the greater the contraction, and increasing the silicon correspondingly will not correct this trouble. No wonder that recently, in revising the Standard Specifications for Malleable Castings it was necessary to increase the variation of castings from requirements considerably over what was formerly found sufficient. The habit of running up the proportion of silicon and escaping danger from grayness of the metal by copious steel additions was evidently too tempting to manufacturers, as their molding losses were thus kept down and a very soft malleable iron resulted. The customer, however, got serious variations in his work, which was not the case when the total carbon was kept between 3.25 and 2.75, and the silicon held as low as possible without undue cracking of the hard castings.

Theoretically mobile primary crushers at the mine working face can be considered the ideal comminution system. A crusher which follows the ore can reduce materials handling costs because it eliminates about one ton of truck deadweight per ton of ore hauled to the crusher. It also eliminates the backhaul of this same deadweight ton. Development of mobile primary crushers has centered in Germany where many soft iron ore and limestone deposits are flat-lying and thus readily adaptable to the use of shiftable conveyors which easily followed the working face. These ores were easily crushed in impact- type mills which had extremely large receiving openings and therefore large reduction ratios. The feeding of such a unit was done with a front-end loader which dumped its load to an inclined apron feeder, which in turn fed the impactor. Under the crusher was an inclined conveyor which transferred the crushed ore to a belt wagon for delivery to the shiftable overland conveyor. Low headroom overhead eccentric single-toggle jaw crushers and short-shaft gyratories were also used on these units, which generally travelled on tracks. While these early mobile primary crushers were versatile and served their purpose, they generally suffered from low capacities. Manufacturers have quickly responded with larger crusher, feeders, and moveable supports, however; and today mobile crusher s have capacities of up to 1500 metric tons per hour, a figure comparable to the capacity of some 54 in. by 74 in. gyratories. An example of a quarry portable crushing plant is at the Bath cement plant of Canada Cement Lafarge, Limited. Two 12 cu yd front-end loaders are digging the stone and hauling it to the portable crushing plant which feeds a field conveyor system. The crushing plant is moved and the field conveyors extended whenever the length of the haul exceeds 300 ft. At the crushing plant, the loaders discharge the stone onto a pan feeder which feeds into the hopper of a Weserhutte-Hazemag compound crusher which combines primary and secondary rotors in the same housing. These are driven at 1200 rpm by 800 hp and 1,000 hp motors (600 and 750 kw). The maximum 3 ft feed (914 mm) is reduced to 3/4 in. (19 mm) at 800 tph. The Weserhutte steered walking mechanism, operated by hydraulic cylinders, takes five -foot strides. Another example is at Alcoa of Australia's operation at Huntley in Western Australia. At the mine face, front-end loaders load 50 mt rear-dump trucks that transport the bauxite ore to the mobile crusher which follows the mine operation. I do not think too much emphasis can be placed upon creation of favorable climate for development of foreign mineral resources to feed the hungry maw of our industrialized nation. We have become dependent, not only upon the ten raw products indicated in Mr. Bancroft's article, but upon 71 mineral substances listed by DMPA as in short supply. Forty-four of these are metals, 9 are chemical minerals and 18 are nonmetallic minerals. Of this list only 8 are produced in any large quantity in the United States, and all are vital in peace-time industry. Even more, they are absolutely essential for defense. This represents our present needs. But if our consumption and requirements are projected over the next 25 years as is done by the President's Materials Policy Commission-The Paley Report-our future outlook becomes appalling. The divergence of consumption over production, even allowing for substitution and conservation, will widen in the future. This means our dependence upon foreign raw materials, mainly minerals, will grow. What are the chief foreign sources of minerals for our future needs? They are chiefly Latin America and the dominions and colonies of the Western European nations. The British Commonwealth countries contain in abundance those minerals which the U. S. lacks. Of 32 of the most critical minerals the Commonwealth is deficient in 7 and lacks only 1; whereas the U. S. is deficient in 18. Strikingly, our deficient minerals are abundant in the Commonwealth and several of their deficiencies are in excess in the U. S. Resources of the two nations complement each other. If Europe should be overrun by an unfriendly power that could control the destinies and resources of the European dominions and colonies, our industrial life would be placed in severe jeopardy. Therefore, I heartily endorse Mr. Bancroft's statements regarding the Point IV program, provided the program is wisely administered and implemented. It is from the underdeveloped countries, as pointed out by Mr. Bancroft, that most of our future mineral supplies will have to come. Many of the underdeveloped source countries are African colonies and dominions of Western European nations. Our present aid to Europe, therefore, is not, as many infer, a purely one-sided affair; it safeguards our future industrial development and security. Development aid directly to the underdeveloped countries through a well administered Point IV program, can do much, I believe, to safeguard our prosperity. I regard it as a wise investment for future U. S. mineral needs. Dr. Alan M. BECAUSE of the many conflicting opinions regarding the functioning of the ball load and the characteristics of ball wear in ball-mill grinding, the following resume of reports covering recent tests conducted at the Hayden plant of the Kennecott Copper Corporation is submitted with the view of pointing out certain salient features that should throw additional light on the subject. MILLS USED Cylindrical drum mills with trunnion feed and discharge were used. The discharge trunnion was I3 1/2 in. in diameter. Dimensions inside the lining were 6 ft. 6 in. in diameter and 9 ft. 6 in. long. The mills were Britannia-lined and nine lifter bars projected 2 in. from the lining. The mill speed was 16 2/3 r.p.m. Feed to the mill was 9 per cent on 10-mesh, 85 per cent on 100-mesh, 77 per cent solids. New balls measured 2 in. in diameter and the approximate weight of the ball load was 40,000 pounds. INITIAL TEST During a test that was being conducted to determine the relative economic value of standard cast balls vs. forged steel balls in the local grinding operation, certain observations were made in regard to the functioning of the various ball sizes and the characteristics of ball wear, which warranted a supplementary test for the purpose of confirming such observations. For the initial test, the necessity for developing a graduated load of the new forged balls before the test could be started was realized, but the time required to obtain a graduated load and the functioning of the various ball sizes was not clear. No advantage could be seen for starting out with a full load of forged balls, as this initial load, at the least, would have to be completely ground out and replaced by daily additions of balls before the graduation could be complete and a normal static condition of ball sizes reached. For a considerable period prior to exhaustion of this initial charge there would be an unusual quantity of worn balls of a certain size, which would not be typical of a normal charge and could influence the characteristics and functioning of the entire load. Therefore, it was decided to start by daily addition of the forged balls to a mill that contained a normal operating load of cast balls. After 88 days of operation the mill was shut down for inspection. By that time the load consisted of a mass of forged balls functioning around a large core of the residual material of the former cast-ball load. This core of cast slugs, locally referred to as "the kidney," was well defined from the forged-ball load.

Magnesium alloys usually are superheated before casting in order to ensure fineness of grain. Superheat temperatures in common use range from 1600" to r 7o0°F.; the casting temperature, which depends upon the mold shape, is usually 200° to 300°F. lower. The process of superhcating requires considerable time and seriously shortens the life of the iron pots used. Recently it has been reported1 that if acetylene, carbon dioxide or natural gas is bubbled through molten electrolytic A.S.T.M. No. 4 alloy at 1400°F. for 5 min., grain refinement equivalent to that of superheating will take place. Addition of certain solids such as graphite or aluminum carbide accomplishes the same results? As will be shown in this paper, it is possible to achieve grain refinement in magnesium casting alloys at low temperatures by mechanical stirring of the molten metal for a short time. This process was developed in the course of research work, supervised by the War Metallurgy Committee under the "Restricted' project NRC-550, for the Office of Production Research and Development of the War Production Board. This paper, based on that work, has been released for publication by the O.P.R.D. Materials and Methods The alloys studied were the most common American sand-casting alloys designated as No. 4 and No. 17 by the American Society for Testing Materials. The magnesiun used in these alloys was of both carbothermic3 and electrolytic' origin. Chemical analyses supplied by the producers are shown in Table I. Each heat consisted of approximately 5 lb. of alloy melted in a Tercod crucible. It was refined by fluxing with Permanente No. 7* refining flux at 1300° to 1350°F. After cooling to 1200° to 1250°F., portions of approximately one pound each, were ladled into iron crucibles contained in an electric furnace at about 1250°F. The molten metal was covered with Permanente No. 21 † covering flux and then heated to the temperature to be investigated. Normally each of the four portions was given a different treatment. In a typical case one portion was stirred vigorously for 5 min., acetylene gas was passed through a second portion for 5 min., a third portion was superheated to 1600°F. for 15 min., then . cooled to casting temperature, and the fourth was held for 5 min. at the temperature of stirring or gassing without other treatment. Each portion was then cast into one-inch diameter cylinders in three "nonturbulent" molds of identical shape. One mold was made of cast iron and the other two of baked sand. Petroleum refining, like other industries in the United States in 1940, focused much attention on its duties and opportunities in the field of national defense. In crdiiter-distinction to the situation during the World War, the industry is well constituted as to existing equipment, processes, and capacity, together with planned additions, to handle any demands that may be made upon it by the defense program needs. Evident throughout was the growing sense of ability to manipulate oil molecules for the production of materials not hitherto considered as being available commercially from petroleum. The development and application of catalytically induced reactions on a broad front is one of the distinguishing characteristics of refining progress during the year. In the hands of the refiner, catalysis has developed into a most important means to secure higher antiknock motor fuels and 100-octane fighting grade aviation gasoline in greatly increased quantity. One illustration of the importance being assigned to catalytic refining is the construction by the Houdry group of an experimental laboratory at a cost of $7'307'30'3, to be staffed with over 100 research men7 solely for the purpose of studying catalytic reactions. In the aviation gasoline picture a modification of specifications by the Government widened the field from which acceptable fuel can be secured, and the continued expansion of the alkylation process in itself promises to go far in filling the demands expected from 50,000 fighting planes. It is conservatively estimated that eyen now the industry can turn out 1,300,000 gal. of 100-octane aviation gasoline daily. The upper limits of octane numbers for regular grades of motor gasoline reached in 1939 were not exceeded, but the average octane number approached the upper level more closely. A survey made of the 1940-model cars showed no rise in average octane requirement of the engines. The trend throughout the year was for greater reliance on the A.S.T.M. method for octane determination. The "1939 Research Method" is less widely used, although still considerably in evidence; the older L-3 method seems to have lost considerable ground and to be on the way out. Re-forming Capacities Increased Interest continued to grow apace in re-forming low-octane naphthas into high-octane gasolines. Some additions, although not great, were announced in thermal re-forming capacity. Interest in catalytic re-forming was greatly stimulated by the technical success of the operation of the converted hydrogenation unit at the Bay-way, N. J., rehery of the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, mentioned in last year's review, and also by the knowledge that recoverable proportions of toluene are present in the hydroformed (catalytically

RECENT experimental results' on the superconductive properties of vanadium indicate that the magnetic behavior of the metal is greatly affected by internal strains caused by mechanical work, and particularly by oxygen and nitrogen impurities. These result in an increase in the hardness of the metal such that metallurgists' have used hardness as a measure of the impurities. An increase in the impurities should also be reflected in a change of lattice parameter with increasing impurity content. The lattice parameter of vanadium prepared by the thermal decomposition of the iodide has been determined by two workers. Neuburger3 obtained a value of a, =3.0338 ± 0.0003A for the body-centered cubic lattice by means of the powder method. The work of Katelaar is referred to by van Arkel4 in which a value of a0 = 3.025 is given. Four samples were used for this investigation. Sample A, the vanadium of the highest purity in the group, was obtained by means of the thermal decomposition of vanadium diiodide and deposited on a 3 mil diam tungsten filament in the form of crystals. The second sample, labeled B, was obtained by the calcium reduction of the pentaoxide at a sufficiently high temperature to give a melt. A third sample, C, was obtained in the same manner as B but remelted in a pure argon atmosphere. The last sample, D, was prepared by the calcium reduction method and the fine powdered vanadium was then sintered by means of applied heat and pressure. Samples A, B, and C were thus essentially free of mechanical strain in their preparation. Sample D was annealed in a high vacuum at 800°C. The samples were prepared for X-ray diffraction analysis such that all additional strain by cold work or by contamination with oxygen and nitrogen was kept at a minimum. Powder obtained from filings was deemed unsuitable since this would require annealing to get rid of the cold work. A heat treatment up to 1000°C at 10-6 m pressure might still increase the impurity content by means of adsorbed oxygen from residual gas in the vacuum chamber. The most satisfactory samples were prepared for back-reflection film techniques. Samples were cut to size, etched with hydrobromic acid, and mounted in Bakelite. They were then lightly polished on 3-0 paper and lightly etched. Chemical and Hardness Analysis of Samples Spectrographic analyses were made of the four samples and indicated similar metallic impurities for the group. The major metallic impurity in each sample was iron, which was less than 0.01 pct. The sum of the other metallic impurities was approximately 0.1 pct. The carbon content was assumed low by virtue of the methods of sample preparation. The principal impurity difference between the samples was in the oxygen and nitrogen content.

THE behavior of molybdenum and its surface oxides in oxidizing and reducing gas atmospheres and in high vacua at elevated temperatures is a question of scientific and technical importance The use of molybdenum as a metal or as an important component in alloys in oxidizing atmospheres at elevated temperatures has been limited because of the unprotective nature of its oxide film and the volatility of this oxide at moderate temperatures. This communication will present results of a vacuum microbalance study 1,2 of the following problems. (11) the oxidation kinetics in the temperature range of 250° to 450°C; (2) the reduction with pure hydrogen of thin oxide films formed on molybdenum; (3) the volatility of the thin oxide films, and (4) the vacuum oxidation of molybdenum at high temperatures. Molybdenum is an interesting metal to study for the following reasons: (I) although the oxide-to-metal-volume ratio is greater than one, the metal is not considered protective; (2) the metal oxidizes readily at temperatures of 250°C and higher; (3) the oxides of the metal are reduced at temperatures as low as 500°C by pure hydrogen; (4) the oxide MoO3 melts at 795°C; and (5) the oxides of molybdenum are volatile at moderate temperatures. The following variables are studied in the oxidation kinetics. time, temperature, pressure, surface preparation, surface area, concentration of inert gas in the lattice, cycling procedures in temperature, vacuum effect and high temperature vacuum oxidation The general interpretation of many of these factors has been previously discussed. LITERATURE The oxidation of molybdenum has not been studied critically. Although" many studies have probably been made on the kinetics of the oxidation process, none has been reported in the literature available to us. The crystal structures found in the oxidation of molybdenum have been studied by Hickman and Culbransen 4 Their results showed that MoO2 is the oxide which is stable in contact with the metallic subgtrate throughout the temperature range 300 to 700°C. As the film thickens in the low temperature range, MoO3 becomes predominant on the surface. Above 400°C, Mo03 is no longer observed, Mo02 being the only oxide found. Hagg and Magneli5 have shown from an X ray study that the a-phase, orthorhombic MoO3 is stable up to 1050°C. Two other phases, ß and ß', with compositions close to Mo02 90 are also obtained The formula for the ß phase is not given but that of the ß' phase is defined as Mo9026. The ß' phase is found to be built upon a monoclinic unit cell. A -?-phase is isolated from a preparation M00275 heated for 17 hrs at 670°C. This phase is

The principle, the equipment and field operation of sonic logging are described. The tfio-receiver system produces logs independent of hole size and mud. Field experience is given and forms the basis for the interpretation of the log. The derivaiion of porosity values from measured velocities is discussed, according to the type of formations (hard formations, compacted sands, and unconsolidated formations). The time-average equation proposed by M. R. J. Wyllie, A. R. Gregory and L. W. Gardner is uscd as a basis for the computation of porosity in limestones, cemented sandstones and compacted sands. Variations in the lithologic character of limestones do not seem to change the porosity calibration markedly. The compaction of sands is related to the compaction of shale adjacent to them; and, thus, the shale velocity is used for the establishtnent of empirical relations for the computation of porosity in un-consolidated formations. Various forrnu.las are tentatively presented to account for shale and fluid content. Field experience demonstrates that considerable attenuation of sonic energy takes place in unconsolidated formations, particularly when gas bearing, and in fractrured formations. Unusually large attenuation produces skipped cycles, a feature easily recognized. The application of sonic logging to structura1 studies is featured, showing its possible integration with the dipmeter. Correlation and its application to the irrterpretation of seisrmic surveys are reviewed. The paper is illustrated with field examples. Sonic logging is the recording of the time required for a sound wave to traverse a definite length of formation. Sonic travel-times are inversely proportional to the speed of sound in the various formations. The speed of sound in subsurface formations depends upon the elastic properties of the rock matrix, the porosity of the formations and their fluid content and pressure. Below the "weathered" or low-velocity layer extending from 50 to 100 ft or so below the surface, sound velocities may range from about 6,000 ft/sec in shallow shales to as much as 34,000 ft/sec in dolomites. In hard formations (well cemented and/or compacted), the sonic log reflects the amount of fluid in the formations; hence, it correlates well with their porosity. In unconsolidated formations, which are usually of fairly high porosity, the sonic log gives an approach to porosity determination, when its readings are corrected for lack of compaction, shaliness, and fluid content. In such formations the sonic log may also indicate the presence of gas and may distinguish between oil- and water-bearing beds. Field experience with the sonic log in soft formations is more limited than that in hard formations. As a result, interpretation in soft formations is not as well developed at the present time. In all types of formations the sonic log is of considerable value for correlation and for the more detailed and accurate interpretation of seismic data. EQUIPMENT AND PRINCIPLE FIELD OPERATION The basic features of the sonic log" are a two-receiver system and two available short spacings. The log is recorded on film using a standard field unit. An SP curve is run along with the sonic curve to give a more interpretable log and to establish absclute depth control for comparison with other logs run in the same well. If desired, a gamma-ray curve may be recorded simultaneously with the sonic curve. Fig. 1 shows the sonic-gamma ray combination sonde. The sonic portion consists of a sound transmitter and three receivers mounted 3, 4 and 6 ft from the transmitter. When the first and second receivers are used, a sonic log of I -ft spacing (distance between receivers) is obtainea. Use of the first and third receivers provides a 3-ft spacing. The transmitter emits pulses at the rate of l0/sec. After the transmission of a pulse the first arrival of sound energy at each receiver triggers its response system. The differ-

Samples of synthetic magnetite were reduced in hydrogen-water vapor atmospheres in the temperature range 450o to 900oC. The reaction was always surface controlled, indicating the final products of reaction are nonfirotective. Three separate cases have been identified from the kinetic results: Case I, reduction of magnetite to iron below 570°C; Case II, reduction of magnetite to iron above 570°C; and Case 111, reduction of magnetite to wustite above 570 oC. In Cases I and 111 the kinetics have been explained by the formation of oxygen anion vacancies in the magnetite surface followed by associated diffusional processes. In Case 11 the observed kinetics have been related to the concentration of iron cation vacancies in the wustite layer formed, followed by associated steady-state diffusional processes. The concentration of cation vacancies in the wustite is maintained constant by the magnetite-wustite equilibrium. THE reduction of the oxides of iron has been a subject of study and interest for many years. However, few attempts have been made to interpret the results in terms of the mechanism of reduction of an iron oxide by either hydrogen or carbon monoxide. Stalhane and Malmberg' using CO, H2, and CO-Hz mixtures, developed the rate expression: where m = mass of oxide reduced, t = time, k = a constant, s = surface area, P = partial pressure of of CO or H,, and P, = partial pressure of the reducing gas at equilibrium. The rate of reaction per unit area was proportional to the difference between the partial pressure of the reducing gas and its pressure at equilibrium. Hansen, Bitsianes, and Joseph2 studied the reduction of pellets of hematite to magnetite with mixtures of CO-CO,. They concluded that below 450°C the reaction proceeded according to a model in which CO reacts with the hematite surface producing an oxygen ion vacancy. The rate controlling step was then assumed to be oxygen ion diffusion through vacancies resulting in the formation of magnetite. They derived an expression giving the rate of reduction proportional to the cO/CO, ratio. Recently McKewan3 published results for the reduction of magnetite spheres in atmospheres below 570°C. He explained his results by an equation of the form where K, is the equilibrium constant for wustite-iron equilibrium attributed to the formation of wustite as an intermediate in the reduction of magnetite. According to McKewan, Kp is an equilibrium constant for H, -HO adsorption in which oxygen is deposited on the surface from the H,Oand subsequently acts as a poison for reduction by hydrogen. Sample Preparation and Experiments. In this work the authors used the same apparatus and experimental procedure employed in the hydrogen reduction of magnetite. Sintered disk samples weighing approximately 1.5 g and measuring 1.2 cm in diameter and 0.25 cm in thickness were prepared by a method described previously.4 Partial pressures of hydrogen and water vapor were controlled by bubbling hydrogen through a series of flasks containing distilled and deionized water maintained at constant temperature in an oil bath. The total flow rate of the reacting gases—hydrogen and water vapor—was approximately 0.5 liter per min. The entire external system was maintained at a temperature above the oil bath to prevent condensation of water vapor. This was accomplished by wrapping electrical resistance elements over all surfaces. The glass column containing the weighing system-a McBain balance suspended from a gold chain-was enclosed in an aluminum tube heated by nichrome resistance wire enclosed in an insulating material. The temperature of the glass column was held constant by means of a series of thermocouples connected in parallel to a Leeds and Northrup temperature controller. This was necessary since variations in temperature resulted in expansion and contraction of the glass column and could be readily observed with the cathetometer. The Hadsel Mill. By R. G HALL (Trans, vol 112 4000 words) This mill is designed to effect the entire reduction of ores by combined crushing and grinding from mine run size to material sufficiently fine for the usual operation of flotation or cyaniding The work is begun and completed in the same machine. The machine is designed on the principal of the elevator wheel, and crushing and grinding are accomplished by dropping a mixture of ore and water upon specially placed "breaker plates" in such a manner that the resultant material passes back into the buckets of the wheel for further elevation One method of removal of the finished product is to permit an overflow of wet pulp on one side of the mill through coarse screens A recent improvement provides for the removal of a pulp by a launder part way up the path of the buckets In either case the pulp passes to a classifier, and the oversize back to the mill in the manner familiar in ball-mill practice Although hardly through the development stage, the machine has given a very good account of itself in simplification of plant, by elimination of coarse and fine crushers with consequent reduction of installation cost and power consumption As compared with the ball mill alone, there is a reduction of power consumption as well as a material reduction of grinding steel There is an increase in cost of maintenance other than grinding steel, but as the machine passes out of the development stage there is a show¬ing of reduction of costs on this item It seems probable that with further develop¬ment and strengthening of the weaker parts further improvement may be made Ball Milling. General expressions are derived relating the streaming potential to the electrochemical potential of a permeable junction separating two electrolytic solutions. By the methods of irreversible thermodynamics, these potentials are related to the flux of mobile species arising from differences in pressure and chemical composition. The flux is conveniently expressed as a transference number, the equivalents of a mobile species transferred through the junction per faraday of electricity. At constant pressure, the flux equation gives the electrochemical potential across the permeable junction. The streaming potential across the junction is obtained by imposing the condition of constant chemical composition. The familiar expression for the borehole SP is shown to be a particular solution of the general flux equation. The derived exprersions were verified in experiments with seven shale samples. Both the theory and experimental data provide additional proof of the presence and magniturle of the streaming potential in shales. INTRODUCTION In the interpretation of electric logs, there has been much concern over the correction to be made to the recorded SP for an electrokinetic or streaming potential originating from the difference in pressure between the mud column and the formation. It was long recognized by M. R. J. Wyllie that such an electrokinetic potential source mas in the mud cake opposite permeable sands.' More recently, M. Gondouin and C. Scala2 showed an additional but opposing electrokinetic source of potential to be in shale beds. Their work was supported by the very extensive and excellent work of Hill and Anderson.3 n the present contribution, the general relationships between the electrochemical potential and the corresponding streaming or electrokinetic potential are examined and clarified. A notable advance towards understanding the relation between the various sources of electrical potential in a borehole has been the application of the now common methods of irreversible thermodynamics to describe the passage of ions and water through charged electrolyte junctions such as in shales.' The advantages of these methods are twofold. Unlike classical thermodynamics, they can be applied to non-equilibrium sys- tems, i.e., systems in which flow takes place, provided the flow processes have reached a steady state. They also permit conventional thermodynamic properties to be related to the steady-state dynamic properties. These methods arc used here specifically to derive expressions relating the potential behavior of shales in terms of ion and water transport. Experimental verification of the expression for the shale streaming potential is given which in turn offers theoretical support to the existence of a streaming potential in shales.' Importantly, the relative contribution of transport parameters to the SP is clarified. The theoretical treatment is essentially that of Lori-mer, Boterenbrood and Hermans3 ut has been extended to derive the general expression for the SP.

MUCH attention has been directed to the effects of grain size upon the properties of alloys, but there has been scant study either of the conditions that determine the pattern and dimensions of den-drites in metal systems, or of the influence of their shape and size upon the overall properties of cast-ings. The aim of the research that is about to be described has been to investigate the effect of vari-ous factors upon the mode of formation of dendrites in alloys by measurements of the distance between adjacent dendrite arms (dendrite spacing). Early investigators, including Grignonl and Tschernoff,2 showed that a metal dendrite is com-posed of a tree-like system of stalks and branches arranged in a simple geometrical pattern. North-cott and Thomas3 demonstrated that, in the face-centered cubic solid solutions of copper-base, these stalks and side arms all lie in (100) directions in the crystal. Several investigators, including Sauveur and Chou,0 Sauveur and Reed,' and Martin and Mar-tina have reported that the addition to steel of alloy-ing elements, such as nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, not only makes the dendrites easier to reveal by etching, but makes them coarser. The latter authors8 proposed that the coarsening of the dendrites is roughly proportional to the increase in the temperature range of freezing, caused by adding the alloying elements. Sauveur and Chou6 showed, in addition, that the dendrites are coarsened by a decreased rate of cooling of the casting. Measurement of Dendrite Arm Spacing Among the physical conditions that could be ex-pected to have an influence upon the dendrite arm spacing, that appears in a cast metal, are: composi-tion, rate of freezing, crystal structure, and type of constitution. The relationships obtaining between these variables and the dendrite dimensions have been examined, in the present research, by measur- ing the arm spacing in a wide variety of alloys, listed in tables II through VI. Alloy compositions are recorded in the tables by showing the symbol of the major metal followed by the percentage and symbol of the alloying agent; thus, "Al-10Ag" is an aluminum-base alloy containing 10 pct of silver. Although none of the alloys were analyzed, an im-pression of their degree of purity may be obtained from that of their component metals given in table I. Five hundred grams of each alloy was made by melting in small clay-graphite crucibles in an elec-tric muffle furnace. After alloying the temperature was adjusted to 50" to 75°C above the liquidus and the melts were poured into cast iron molds, at room temperature, the molds having a wall thickness of 1 in. and a cavity 11/2 in. sq in cross-section. Each ingot, thus cast, was sectioned at mid-height and the sectioned surface was polished and etched for metallographic examination. Dendrite spacing meas-urements were made at three positions, namely, ad-jacent to the mold wall, midway between the wall and the center of the ingot, and at the center (desig-nated e, m, and c respectively, in the tables). A typical series of microstructures is presented in fig. 1. For each measurement, the average was taken of the dendrite spacing of several grains covering a zone about 2 mm wide. Only those grains which had a major dendrite axis nearly in the plane of polish were selected in order to eliminate corrections for orientation differences from grain to grain. Although the dendrite spacings were measured to the nearest thousandth of a millimeter, the values listed in the tables are thought to be significant only to the nearest hundredth of a millimeter. The larg-est difference in readings found, when various ob-servers rated the same specimens, was 0.012 mm; the largest difference between corresponding meas-urements upon duplicate specimens was 0.027 mm.

INTRODUCTION Chingola Division of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Limited is situated in the Copper- belt of Zambia, approximately 30 kilometres south of the border with Zaire. It is the country's leading producer of copper and its principal foreign exchange earner, and has been, in its time, the largest single copper producer in the British Commonwealth and the second largest in the world. There are two 'primary' copper sources at the Division, namely Underground producing approximately 100 000 tonnes of contained copper annually, and the Open Pits, producing approximately 200 000 tonnes annually. Following the commissioning of the Tailings Leach Plant in 1974, treating final tailings, metallurgical recovery increased from approximately 70% to in excess of 80%. Extensive deposits of cobalt are present and following the rise in the market price in 1979 and 1980, plans were made to extract this separately. Cobalt production commenced in 1980 from Underground and will increase substantially when the Open Pit cobalt reserves become available in approximately 2 years time. This paper covers the development of the production method of the principal Underground Orebody, known as the Lower Orebody, and the control systems applied to it. HISTORY The Lower Orebody, formerly known as the Nchanga West Orebody, was discovered by extensive Diamond Drilling operations in the late 1920's. Development of the Shaft complex and the orebody commenced and continued until 1931 when flooding from development on the 480 foot horizon necessitated closure. The mine remained closed until 1937 and production commenced from the Lower Orebody in 1939. Various expansion schemes of the Metallurgical Plants and the Underground workings were completed over the years with the result that Underground production increased steadily to in excess of 150 000 tonnes copper annually in the 1960's. In recent years production has levelled out at slightly less than 100 000 tonnes annually. This decrease is as a result of producing from a lower grade reserve, available within a more limited production front, and the application of production constraints in the light of experience gained. GEOLOGY Within the Nchanga Mining Licence Area of Chingola Division, there are a total of 14 known copper orebodies in the basal part of a thick succession of sediments of Pre-Cambrian age. The sediments rest on a Basement Complex of granites, gneisses and schists. Three superimposed stratiform orebodies, known locally as the Lower, Intermediate and Upper Orebodies, occur over a vertical interval of approximately 150m. Current annual copper production is approximately 300 000 tonnes. The ore originates from four different mining operations, one Underground mine and three Open Pits. Approximately 9 million tonnes of ore grading between 3 and 3.5% copper are milled annually. The two largest sources of ore, the Under- ground mine and the Nchanga Open Pit are on the gently dipping south limb of the Nchanga Syncline (Figure 1). In the Nchanga Open Pit the major source of ore is the Upper Orebody with lesser tonnages from the Intermediate and Lower Orebodies. In the Underground mine the Lower Orebody is the only orebody being mined, underground mining of the Upper Orebody being suspended for economic reasons in 1978. The typical stratigraphic column is illust- rated in the legend on Figure 1. The footwall rocks comprise either Nchanga Red Granite or the Arkose formation, both of which are hard competent rocks, offering generally good mining conditions for footwall development. Copper mineralisation of the Lower Orebody extends from the upper part of the Arkose to the top of the Lower Banded Shales. Overlying the Arkose is the Transition zone (0-18111 in thickness). The Transition zone comprise a lower member, Transitional Arkose, consisting of incoherent kaolinised sandstone, and an upper member, Transitional Lower Banded Shales consisting of normally soft bleached and silicified shale.
