THE Petroleum Division will hold two meetings this fall, one on the Coast at Los Angeles, Sept. 29, with the technical sessions in the assembly room of the California Oil and Gas Association and a banquet Friday evening at the Richfield Cafe atop the Richfield building; the other in the Southwest, at Dallas, Texas, Oct. 6 and 7, with the Baker Hotel as headquarters. Dr. Frederick M. Becket, President of the Institute, and A. B. Parsons, Secretary, will attend both meetings. Arrangements for the meetings are not yet complete but the respective local committees, working in close touch with the officials of the Division are rapidly shaping up the programs and other detail.

THE Industrial Conference appointed by President Wilson has presented the following tentative plan for preventing or retarding strikes and industrial conflicts by proposing new Federal machinery for the adjustment of differences between employers and employees. Theplan is signed by William B. Wilson, Secretary of the Department of Labor, 'as chairman of the conference; Herbert Hoover, former Federal Food Administrator, as vice-chairman; Martin H. USE of airplanes to facilitate mining and petroleum operations has definitely left the "doubting Thomas" stage. As a matter of fact, front pages no longer record the novelty of this efficient arm of the mineral industry. We are now down to the facts basis. The recent aviation issue of Engineering and Mining Journal added - to our fund of knowledge on applications which the A.I.M.E. Aviation Committee is extensively adding to through its world-wide compilation of specific data. Another indication of the advance of flying in our. industries is the addition of regular aviation specialists to the staffs of various mining and petroleum companies, who function in the organization the same as do the metal

Rare earth element (REE) analyses of cumulus plagioclase from the PGE ore zone of the Stillwater Complex indicate that pressure fluctuations in the magma chamber acting on a single magma cannot be responsible for features such as the reappearance of Mg-rich olivine on the liquidus. The data are more consistent with a model involving multiple injection and mixing of geochemically distinct magmas. The PGE-bearing sulfides of the J-M Reef are associated with such a reappearance of olivine, indicating that the unusual location of the ore zone may be related to the addition of new magma, compositionally distinct from magmas that produced cumulates in the Ultra- mafic zone of the complex.

THIS year's Chairman of the Institute of Metals Division is a relatively rare phenomenon in the metallurgical profession; he is an expert historian of metallurgy, he is a confirmed collector and student of old works on alchemy, chemistry, and metallurgy-vide: the famous Biringuccio and he is a profound student (with a somewhat idealistic slant) of recent trends in world affairs and in what some incurable optimists call civilization; and at the same time he is still possessed of a sense of humor. Incidentally he is also one of the bestknown nonferrous metallurgists in this country and abroad, and for fifteen years has been a willing worker in A.I.M.E and the Institute of Metals Division.

WHEN Russell B. Paul was born in Russell Gulch, Gilpin County, Colorado, that district was the state's leading gold producer. The son of Dr. Henry Paul, who had gone to Colorado from Missouri during the golden era following the Civil War, and had joined the Institute in 1889 when he was manager of the famous Aspen mine, young Paul's early life was steeped in a mining atmosphere from which developed his selection of mining engineering as a profes¬sion. After receiving his E.M. degree from the Colorado School of Mines in 1902, Mr. Paul worked in Colorado and Honduras. Returning from Central America he was married to Mary Ellen Gilmour, daughter of a prominent Central City mining man;

High-resolution seismic reflection profiling can be used to evaluate detailed structural and stratigraphic features of coal prospects. Since most coal prospects are relatively shallow, less than 1000 m (3000 ft) deep, high sampling rates in space and time can be used effectively to improve vertical and lateral resolution of seismic data. The case study presented here shows how seismic data was used to evaluate the Wyodak coal at a prospective coal gasification site. The data were used to map the detailed structure and thickness of the coal and to search for lateral discontinuities, such as pinchouts and faults. An important find was a paleochannel cutting across the base of the coal seam, which was later confirmed by drilling.

HAPPILY, a large group of the non-ferrous fraternity have long valued a personal association with the new Chairman of the Institute of Metals Division. Many others who will meet him, either officially or unofficially this year, will find themselves sharing the enthusiasm with which he has been welcomed to his new office. Albert A. Smith, Jr., was born at Butler, N. J., on Dec. 28, 1904, and moved to New Haven in time to initiate his preparation for Yale University on the home grounds. After receiving a B.S. degree cum laude in 1926, he stayed on for graduate work at the Hammond Laboratory under C. H. Mathewson, and was awarded an M.S. degree in 1928.

Discovery of a hitherto unsuspected extension of the Vermilion range iron formation in Northern St. Louis County, Minn., has been announced by the director of the State's geological survey, Dr. George M. Schwartz. USGS aeromagnetic maps show that the Vermilion range curves southeast from the Tower-Soudan area into the wilderness between Embarrass and Bear Head Lake. Dr. Schwartz believes that this new information justifies considerable exploration and drilling for iron ore in an area of about 20 sq miles southeast of Soudan. The aerial maps were a result of a three year USGS-Minnesota Geological Survey aerial search for iron formations in a 30,000 sq mile area in northern Minnesota.

US 4,185,078-In the recovery of rhenium values from an aqueous sodium molybdate solution contained in the hydrometallurgical processing of roasted molybdenite, improved results are realized by using a described extractant consisting of a quaternary ammonium compound and benzene or other highly aromatic solvent which dissolves a quaternary ammonium-rhenium complex Essentially all rhenium is recovered from the solution and the extractant can be regenerated and recycled. A $5000 contract to explore for asbestos in Marinette County. Wis., has been entered into between the Government and the Star Mining Co. of Madison, Wis. The Government will contribute 90 pct or $4500 to the cost of the project. The United States presently produces about 8 pct of its asbestos requirements. "Sulphur stockpiles are at a minimum for national security arid must not be further reduced," was the warning given by L. M. Williams, Jr., president of Freeport Sulphur Co. He stated that although the long-range outlook is favorable , current sulphur production cannot meet the demand and as a result the United States faces a crisis in the coming months.

(written discussion 11).-7--In the development of Mr. Traer's method for the low-temperature coking of Illinois coals, after the principles laid clown by Prof. Parr, it was soon demon-strated that, in order to yield a product of uniform volatile content, the coal must be coked in thin layers, and consequently must be handled in comparatively small volumes. This means, in the first place, that great care must he observed in the design of the coking chambers to prevent the loss of the products of distillation, and, in the-second place, that labor-saving devices must be utilized to the greatest possible extent in order to reduce the cost of handling.

Concentradora "Doña Aida" (100 t /d capacity) was built in 1971-72 to treat dumps and ores containing mixed oxide-sulfide copper-gold-silver minerals derived from two veins. The veins, Don Felipe and Maria, are about 150 m apart, but are distinctly different mineralogically. The deposits are near Sun Juan de Guadalupe, Durango, Mexico. All new process equipment was manufactured locally, in or near Torreon, Coahuilu. Sampling, ore testing, flowsheet design, plant design, drawings, purchasing, financing, and construction, etc., were planned and directed by two engineers. Construction was executed by local miners and common labor (largely agricultural). The paper presents detailed costs for equipment and construction. The subsequent breaking-in operation is discussed.

M R. WEIGEL'S present position as Chairman of the Institute's nonmetallics group arises from twenty years of experience in that field, from 1921 to 1926 as mineral technologist for the Bureau of Mines, in Washington, and since then for the Missouri Pacific R.R. Co., with headquarters in St. Louis. This rail- road serves an extensive region in and about the southern central states, from Omaha to the extreme southern tip of Texas, and from southern Illinois to Pueblo, Colorado, and it is Mr. Weigel's job to get as much freight for the road as possible from the mineral industry in this area. Much of the present and potential mineral production is in the non- metallic group.

AN ENGINEER with as varied geographical experience as H. J. Brown does not often specialize on one particular thing all of his professional life. For forty years he has been engaged in gypsum mining, manufacturing, plant design, construction, and operation. Not only is it his work, but he says it is his hobby as well, though membership in three yacht clubs might belie that statement. New England's new representative on the A.I.M.E. Directorate, who was born in New York, Dec. 20, 1879, went to the Lawrence Scientific School at Harvard at the turn of the century.
