The Joint Session on Continuous Casting, of the Institute of Metals Division and the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, convened in the Jade Room of the Hotel Waldorf-Astoria, New York City, on Feb. 23, 1944, at 9:15 o'clock, Carl E. Swartz presiding. C. E. SWartz.—It is gratifying to see so many out at what may seem an early hour for the beginning of A.I.M.E. sessions, but I think this number-—some fifty or sixty of you —is an adequate expression of the interest in these processes all over the United States, and possibly in foreign countries. I would like to ask those who feel that this type of program is of value to you to write or speak to some one of the Institute of Metals Division officers and suggest other topics for symposiums. We have a feeling that some of these current practices are of interest and we believe that under proper sponsorship many of the companies mill be willing to give publicity to processes such as those that will be discussed today. Also, we would like suggestions and criticisms, so that the next ones can be better. The subject of continuous casting is not new, of course. The two papers on the program this morning will adequately cover the history and some of the earlier processes, some of the theory and some of the practice, some of the reasons why these various methods did not work. I was rather interested in discovering, when thumbing through one of the A.I.M.E. publications tile other night, an article on continuous casting. I was not aware that the A.I.M.E. had published any papers on continuous casting, but there may be a number. The one that I happened to find was published in the 1915 volume, on the Mellen rod-casting process, and so we might say this is not the first session in which these subjects have been under discussion. However, there have been many improvements since then in all fields of metallurgical and mechanical engineering; consequently, I think that the papers today will be a little more involved and a little more complete in their technique. The first paper today will be given by one of our gentlemen of the press, who has done one of the outstanding jobs in this country in calling to our attention some of the newer processes that are being considered and being used in the metallurgical indus-

The plastic flow characteristics of clay water suspensions were first recognized by Binghaml in 1916 and further studied by Ambrose and Loomis' in 1931-1932. Many physical and chemical properties of clay suspensions are deeply influenced by particle size distribution as well as by the exchange cation. Separation of a number of fractions is particularly helpful in making a detailed study of a suspension. A limited amount of work has been conducted on the effects of particle size on specific properties of mud drilling fluids. A knowledge of particle size distribution is essential for a better understanding of fundamental properties of clay suspensions, particularly viscosity and gel strength. The purpose of this investigation was to study the effect of particle size on the viscosity and gel properties of clay suspensions and to determine any changes in mineral composition accompanying variation in size. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Numerous methods may be used to fractionate a poly-dispersed clay suspension into nearly mono-dispersed systems. Particles larger than 44 micron (325-mesh) may be obtained by wet screening. For sizes from 44 to 1 micron, the fractionation may be accomplished by sedimentation, elutriation plus microscopy,' or turbidimetry.6 When dealing with systems which contain a major portion of particles below l-mi-cron size, slit ultramicroscopy,7 centrifuge methods of Svedberg,5 eams,9 and McBain,l0 and X-ray methods" may be employed. The Sharples super centrifuge has been proved suitable for the economical separation of suspended particles of submicron range.12,13,14 Three-hundred and forty-five gal of 1 per cent by weight Aquagel suspension was mixed in a high-speed 5-gallon mud mixer and the suspension was allowed to stand in 5-gal glass bottles for 30 days to assure full hydration. All particles larger than 44 microns were removed by wet screening. Five fractions in the range of 44 to 1 micron were obtained by sedimentation. The Sharples super centrifuge method described by Hauser and Reed.13 Norton and Speil,14 Ha user and Lynn,15 and Hauser and Schachman,10 as employed to yield five fractions of submicron size. A super centrifuge operation chart prepared by Fancher, Oliphant, and Houssierre12 was used to determine operating conditions for the desired particle ranges. The clay suspension, after removal of all material above 1-micron size, was centrifuged. During rotation of the bowl, the particles were deposited on a thin plastic liner which fit closely inside the bowl. After passing 5 gal of suspension through the centrifuge, the liner was removed and the particles on the liner were scraped off, remixed and recentrifuged. This was repeated five times. Thus, Fractions H, I, K, and L were obtained. The finest fraction, M, remained in an approximately 0.4 per cent suspension. Water was evaporated under reduced pressure from this suspension to yield the finest particles. Results of the fractionation are included in Table 1. In order to achieve proper orientation and humidity conditions for X-ray diffraction analysis, the following procedure was employed. The dilute suspensions were placed on glass slides and allowed to dry at room temperature. This was repeated several times. Previous to measurement each sample first was placed in a water desiccator for half an hour and then allowed to stand for 15 minutes at room temperature. thus yielding an equilibrium condition of about 52 per cent relative humidity. The relative humidity of the room in which the X-ray diffraction was carried out was maintained at approximately 50 per cent so that there was no change in the spacings during the X-ray examination. The rate of formation of the intermetallic compound, indium antimonide, at the interface between iudium and antimony at 100°C is greatly increased when a composite electrode of indium electrode -posited on antimony is made the cathode in an electrolytic cell. The amount of indium antimonide formed during electrolytic treatment at constant potential appeared to he proportional to the square root of time, but the scatter of the data, particularly at long times, makes it impossible to state this conclzlsi1:ely. The rate constant for the electrochemical synthesis was estimated to he 1.5 x 10-12 sq cm per sec. A similar- set of experiments was conducted in the absence of an applied potential but under otherwise similar conditions. The rate constant lor the thermal synthesis was less than 2 x 10-14 sq cm per, sec, at least two orders of magnitude less than obtained during electrolytic treatment. In a series of electrochemical studies it was observed that intermetallic compounds formed on the surface of polarized electrodes.1'2 The possibility of using this technique for the electrochemical preparation of intermetallic compounds was investigated and subsequently applied to the synthesis of the semiconducting III-V compounds. Gallium antimonide, indium arsenide. indium antimonide, and indium bismuthide were successfully formed by electrodepositing the Group III element from a boiling acid solution onto an electrode made of the Group V element. The following kinetic studies were undertaken on indium antimonide to obtain quantitative information on the rate of formation of this representative III-V compound under a potential gradient. EXPERIMENTAL The electrolytic cell for these experiments was a modified, three-neck, round-bottom, 500-ml distillation flask. Sealed into the side of the flask was a Luggin probe which monitored the surface of the working electrode and extended out of the flask to a small reservoir containing a saturated calomel electrode. The counter electrode was platinum. The three electrodes were connected to a Wenking po-tentiostat which maintained a preselected constant potential near the surface of the working electrode with reference to a saturated calomel electrode. All potentials noted in this paper are with reference to a saturated calomel electrode at 45° ± 5°C. The potential and the current were both monitored using Sargent Model MR recorders. The antimony electrodes were cast in graphite molds to form spheres about 15 mm in diameter with a shank 6 mm in diameter and 10 mm long. A heavy copper wire (12B & S gage) was soldered to this shank. Collodion was applied for protection to the shank and the connecting part of the copper lead. A snug-fitting O-ring was slipped over the shank and the electrode was then fitted into a teflon holder such that only the spherical portion was exposed. The electrode surfaces were cleaned and chemically polished prior to assembly and introduction into the electrolyte by etching in a modified CP-4 solution (50 parts glacial acetic acid, 10 parts concentrated nitric acid, 2 parts 48 pct hydrofluoric acid). The electrolyte was 10-2 M In+3 in 1 MH2So4 and its temperature was held constant by refluxing. The reflux condenser was open to the atmosphere and no temperature correction was made for changes in barometric pressure. The indium concentration in the electrolyte was checked from time to time by the analytical method outlined below for the determination of the amount of indium antimonide formed electrochemically. A schematic of the recorded potential is shown in Fig. 1. At point A the antimony electrode was introduced into the cell and the open-circuit potential recorded. At point B the potentiostat, preset at the desired potential, was switched on. It was switched off at point C and the potential fell to the open-circuit value of the electrodeposited indium. The

THE data of Chaudron,1 Tonosaki,2 and Collins³ on the thermodynamic properties of MOO, disagree widely. These authors, by using essentially similar methods, studied the following reaction: 1/2MoO2(s) + H2(g) == i/2Mo(s) + Ph,o H2O(g),K = —----- [1] Ph2 Tonosaki used a vacuum system consisting of a furnace containing MOO, and a water saturator whose temperature was kept at 25 °C with a thermostat. After repeated evacuation, hydrogen was admitted slowly into the system. The experiments were based upon the fact that at a constant furnace temperature and constant partial pressure of water, the total pressure of gas mixture over MOO? + Mo is constant. Any attempt to vary the pressure by external forces would vary only the amounts of MoO2, and Mo, after which the pressure should return to the equilibrium value in accordance with the equilibrium constant of reaction 1. The actual value of K was determined from the total equilibrium pressure (sum of Ph2o + Ph2) at each temperature. The total pressure of gas was varied within the range of 80.2 to 125.4 mm Hg, within a temperature range of 645" to 823 °C. The results were summarized as log K = 0.9413 — 1444.6/T for reaction 1. The ratio of H2O/H2 was considered to be uniform in spite of the presence of a thermal gradient across the static gas phase. It was shown by Rosenqvist and Cox,' however, that in somewhat similar circumstances the error resulting from thermal diffusion may be large. Collins³ improved Tonosaki's method by attempting to avoid thermal diffusion errors. His equilibrium data were obtained at 700°, 800°, and 900° C, and the result for reaction 1 was expressed as log K = 1.258 — 1822/T. The purpose of this investigation was to study reaction 1, avoiding the thermal diffusion errors, and to obtain equilibrium data in a considerably wide temperature range for the reliable extrapolation of the resulting thermodynamic functions. Experimental Procedure The diagram of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Tank hydrogen was passed through a tube containing platinized asbestos at 425 °C in order to convert a trace of oxygen into water vapor. The flow rate was carefully controlled with a capillary-type flow-meter B and a bubbling column D. The gas was then presaturated sufficiently at P and led into a condenser system immersed in a thermostat, controlled to within ±0.002C. The temperature of the thermostat was measured with a thermometer calibrated against a certified standard. The temperature of P was adjusted to avoid the condensation of unduly large amounts of water as judged from the rate of flow out of the capillary tube M. Argon was purified by passing it through magnesium chips kept at 630°C. After passing through the flowmeter B', it was mixed with moist hydrogen emerging from the thermostat. The resulting gas mixture was then led into the hot zone of the furnace through the heated glass tubing and the silica tube S, thus insuring the same ratio of PII2o/Ph2 from the condenser to the reaction chamber, thus avoiding thermal diffusion. The entire gas system was of all-glass construction, except at the magnesium train. The furnace comprised a glazed alumina tube over which a 15-in. platinum coil was wound. The lower end of the alumina tube was tightly closed with a brass bottom and a silicone rubber gasket, and the upper end with two glass disks, each with a hole of 1/16 in. in diameter, through which the gas mixture escaped into the atmosphere. A back-up coil of kanthal wire facilitated the temperature control of the furnace. A coil of annealed molybdenum strip of 99.99 pct purity, 0.005 in. thick and 0.050 in. wide, and weighing 17 g was hung in the furnace with a 0.010-in. platinum wire attached to one end of a sensitive analytical balance. The temperature of the furnace was measured with a Pt-Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple checked against a standard. The experimental procedure consisted of heating the gas purification trains, adjusting the gas flow rates, attaining a constant thermostatic temperature, flushing the entire system for 2 hr while heating the furnace to well above the expected equilibrium temperature and then cooling it at a rate of 0.3°C per min during which time the change in the weight of molybdenum was observed on the balance. For a given thermostatic temperature, i.e., a constant Prr,o/Px,, molybdenum oxidized upon cooling slightly below the equilibrium temperature. The procedure was then repeated by heating the furnace and thus reaching a temperature slightly above the equilibrium value. The average of the two temperatures, differing by 2" to 3"C, was considered to be the true equilibrium temperature. The study of self-diffusion of plutonium in E phase has been carried out by the welded couples method. The tracer used was puZ4O which is detected by its X-ray emission (conversion lines of uranium which are computed between 13 and 21 kev). Intensities were measured with a scintillation counter. Each layer was removed in a direction parallel to the original interface with a grinding machine and a thickness measured with a pneumatic comparator. The concentration-penetration curves obtained were corrected for the effect of heating time from room temperature to annealing temperature and for the expansion due to phase transformations of plutonium. They were analyzed by the generalized Gruzin method. Self-diffusion of plutonium in E Phase is very fast cm per sec between 500" and 620°C) and the diffusion zones are 2 to 3 mm wide for annealing times ranging from 30 min up to 10 hr. The Arrhenius law gives the temperature dependence in the form: From the point of view of self-dqfusion, PUE phase falls into the anomalous bcc metals category (Tip , Hfp, Zrp, Uy) with a low-frequency factor and an activation energy lower than those provided by standard correlations. No theory proposed hitherto to explain these anomalies (influence of dislocations, of extrinsic vacancies bonded to inlpurities, of bi-vacancies) can clearly explain the self-diffusion coeffzcients of plutonium. DIFFUSION in bcc metals is a present-day problem. A recent symposium (Gatlinburg, 1964), followed by a book,' has been devoted to it. A great many experiments seem to show that diffusion in certain bcc metals obeys unexpected laws. The activation energies measured are sometimes strangely low (B hafnium, y uranium). For certain metals (0 zirconium, p titanium) the curves of log D (D = diffusion coefficient) as a function of 1/T (T = absolute temperature) are not linear. The frequency factors Do, which are of the order of 1 sq cm sec-' in fcc metals, vary from 1 to 10~6 sq cm sec-'. Various theories have been put forward to explain these anomalies; none is yet satisfactory. We wished to introduce a new experimental result by studying the self-diffusion in c plutonium. This allotropic phase, stable from 475°C up to the melting point (640°C), is in fact bcc. Unfortunately, nothing is known of the characteristics of the point defects in this phase, which limits the scope of the hypothesis which can be made about the mechanism(s) of self-diffusion in plutonium. 1) EXPERIMENTAL METHODS 1) Principle. We used the welded couple method. The two pellets of the couple initially have different 240 isotope contents (X emitter). After diffusion, the concentration/penetration curves are drawn up by the generalized Gruzin method. 2) Gamma Spectrography. The metal used in our study is plutonium, either low in puZ4O (isotopic content 1 pct) or high in puZ4O (8 pct). The latter also contains plutonium 241 (-1 pct) and 300 ppm of ameri-cium produced by the reaction Pu2U-AmM1 + 8-. The emission spectra of these two plutoniums placed in leak-tight vinyl bags have been studied by y spectrograph~. The detector is a thin crystal of thallium-doped sodium iodide. The activity of the plutonium rich in 240 is about twice that of the plutonium low in 240 in the energy band of 17 kev (L conversion lines of uranium); this band was used in these measurements. 3) Preparation and Examination of the Diffusion Couples. Diffusion couples were made from plutonium with a high and low PU"' content. Pellets (6 6 mm. thickness 3 mm) mounted on a polishing disc with ground parallel faces were polished mechanically on both sides. In this way, pellets with two parallel faces were easily obtained. The polished pellets were joined by a 6 phase anneal (420°C, 1 hr) in a small screw press (pressure of 20 kg per sq mm cold); a centering ring enabled the two pellets to be pressed coaxially. The couples then were subjected to the diffusion treatment by annealing in the E phase in sealed silica ampules in argon at atmospheric pressure. The annealing temperatures and times are given in Table I. The couples were encased in a mild steel ring, the joint interface being thus parallel to the ground face of the ring. The diffusion couple/ring assembly underwent successive abrasions by means of a magnetic plate grinder. The thickness of the abraded layer was measured with a Solex pneumatic comparator when it was less than 0.1 mm (accuracy 0.2 p) or with a mechanical micrometer (accuracy 3 p) for passes of the order of 0.2 mm. All these operations were done in glove boxes, as plutonium is particularly toxic. After each abrasion we determined the emission spectrum of the ground face. An empirical criterion is presented for use in estimating the strength of heavily jointed or weathered rock masses. This criterion incorporates the intact strength of the rock material and introduces two dimensionless parameters m and s which characterize the behaviour of the interlocking particles in a jointed rock mass. The use of rock mass classification systems for estimating the values of these parameters is discussed. The application of this non-linear failure criterion to the analysis of slopes is illustrated by means of a worked example.

MANY of the factors influencing the creep behavior of ferrous alloys have been investigated and reported upon in the literature, including such variables as grain size, steelmaking practice, nature and stability of the microstructure, and the effect of alloying elements in steels. However, with respect to the latter, the microstructures involved are usually heterogeneous and as a result the effect of the addition is related to its effects on the various phases present in the microstructure. In the instances where this structure consists of ferrite and carbide, the behavior of the alloy addition will be related to its action in strengthening ferrite and in opposing temperature softening of ferrite as well as coalescence of carbide. The present paper is the third in a series comprising a comprehensive review of investigations on the properties of iron binary alloys. 1.2 Its purpose is to describe the results of isolating one microstructural phase, namely ferrite, and studying its creep characteristics in both the unalloyed and alloyed conditions. This should aid in establishing to a large degree the importance of ferrite in the creep behavior of steels consisting of the previously mentioned ferrite-carbide aggregate. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK In view of the fact that the present investigation deals only with the effects of silicon, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and cobalt, and to a certain extent with the effects of carbon, the review of previous literature will be confined to these elements. Practically no references were encountered dealing with the influence of these elements on the creep characteristics of the isolated phase. However, various contributions have dealt with the creep behavior of low-carbon steels alloyed with the elements under consideration. A particularly concise review in this respect is given by Bullens (Battelle)3 and much of this material has been drawn upon. The definite improvement in creep resistance and high-temperature strength conferred by molybdenum is well known. Published suggestions by the A.S.M.E.4 permit of an increase of some 2000 to 5000 lb. per sq. in. in permissible design loads over a temperature range from 650° to 1000°F. as a consequence of additions of 0.40 to o.60 per cent of this element in carbon steels of the order of o.25 to o.35 per cent carbon content. Babcock and Wilcox Tube Co.5 has published data showing the pronounced increase in stress necessary to cause one per cent creep per 10,000 hr. when additions of 0.5 or 1 per cent molybdenum are made to a plain carbon steel. These data apply to temperatures over a range from 800° to 1000°F.

For many pu@oses uniform strength is desired over a long temperature range, coupled to a band of softness at the hot end for easy shaping. Various types of material fulfill such a requirement to different degrees, depending on the regularity of their atomic structure. In long-chain polymers and vitreous glasses the irregular structure leads to a steep temperature dependence of deformation resistance and the temperature band between the hard and brittle condition and the soft condition is only about 100 C. In crystals and especially metals the atomically regular structure leads to a much smaller sensitivity over a wide temperature band, thus approaching the ideal behavim. The reason for this insensitivity is that the regular crystalline structure deforms by the movement of dislocations and the elastic interactions of dislocations in- PLASTICS, GLASSES, AND CRYSTALS The ease or otherwise of deformation varies with temperature much more in some substances than in others. This is an important matter when service over a wide temperature range is needed, especially volve energies of several hundred electron volts compared with which the energy of thermal agitation is insignificant. However, temperature affects a metal's defmmation resistance through its influence on the annealing, m coarsening, of the three-dimensional dislocation network. This coarsening is a phenomenon very similar to grain growth and ideas about grain growth can be applied to it. Taking into account also the temperature dependence of the glide resistance from alloying additions, a reasonable account can be given of the overall effect of temperature on deformation strength and of stress and grain size on deformation rake. Special structures me described. some arising from these ideas and as yet untried, which may benefit metals and polymers but not ni-treous glasses. when in addition a degree of softness suitable for shaping is required at some stage. It would be nice if one could write on this subject in as much detail about plastics, glasses, and so forth, as about metals, but there has been far more study of this matter in metals than in other substances, which is one reason why most of this paper concerns metals. However, in Fig. 1 there are shown the deformation strengths of several nonmetallic substances as a function of temperature. In many tests the attempt at deformation caused breakage and the graph lines are then drawn dashed. Long-chain plastics, a glass, and a crystalline substance are included in Fig. 1. INTEREST in the various products of the austenite eutectoid transformation in iron-carbon alloys, particularly as produced by the isothermal sub-critical techniques introduced by Davenport and Bain,1 has resulted in the application of similar heat treatments to other eutectoid transformations. Studies2.3.4 of the beta copper-aluminum alloy eutectoid transformation revealed microstructures very similar to those found in iron-carbon alloys. Investigations5,6 of the kappa phase in the copper-silicon alloy system have established the eutectoid type transformation of this phase into terminal alpha and intermediate gamma phases. This transformation has been reported' as forming a eutectoid type structure in a very sluggish manner by a long time isothermal treatment. The purpose of the present investigation is to study the products of the kappa eutectoid transformation as affected by transformation temperatures by means of microscopic and hardness methods. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS The copper-silicon alloy equilibrium diagram is shown in Fig I. The kappa field converges to a minimum silicon solubility at the eutectoid composition and all other completely kappa alloys are hypereutectoid. Thus, kappa decomposition involves first the proeutectoid precipitation of gamma, followed by the eutectoid transformation of a lower silicon content kappa (5.2 pct). Smith5 has indicated that alloys containing between 5.4 and 5.7 pct silicon could be hot rolled, but that the latter composition was desirable in order to permit a wider kappa temperature range. The alloy was prepared by adding Baker's commercially pure silicon to an ingot of copper-silicon alloy containing 2.34 pct silicon remaining from the investigation of Brick, Martin and Angier.7 Following the casting techniques of Krynitsky, Saunders and Stern,8 the ingot was melted under a heavy layer of dried charcoal in a clay-graphite crucible in a gas-fired pot furnace. Small lumps of silicon were held under the melt surface with a graphite rod. After the silicon had dissolved, the alloy was chill-cast and then remelted without a cover, stirred thoroughly, skimmed and poured into a preheated cast iron mold. The cast microstructure is shown in Fig 2. The casting, 10 X 4 X ¾ in., was annealed at 750°C for 21 brand furnace cooled. About 1/16 in. was milled from all surfaces. The plate was cut in half longitudinally and the bottom half analyzed by A.S.T.M. methods.9 The composition by weight was as follows: copper 94.24 pct, silicon 5.56 pct, iron 0.11 pct.

In most cases, it is far from easy to analyze the conditions of service and tell which is the greatest factor in determining the life of wire rope. If we start on a layout for an entirely new rope system, the task of making conditions satisfactory is simplified so far as the engineering details are concerned; but if the plant requiring wire rope is in operation, any change is likely to involve the expenditure of considerable money to replace and change over machinery that must be kept in constant operation, because a large monetary loss will result from a shutdown for even a few days. Often wire rope is kept operating under bad conditions, as the user thinks that it is cheaper and quicker to replace the rope than to make alterations in the hoisting machinery. A typical case is a metal mine operating in what is now almost the center of a large mining city, where it owns a few acres of mineral rights. It was expected that the shaft would go to a depth of 1000 ft. (305 m.), so a moderate-sized rope, about 1 1/4in. (31.7 mm.), was used on a 6-ft. drum with a 7-ft. head-frame sheave and rather short lead from drum to head sheave. This mine has gone deeper each year until it is now 2500 ft. deep and the rope speed has been increased from 1500 ft. per min. to over 3000 ft. The original rope just filled the drum in one layer, now it overwinds three layers. The original ropes were probably 6 X 19 crucible steel and lasted from 12 to 18 mo.; now, the highest grade plow steel is used, yet the average service is only about 6 mo. The cause is not hard to find. If the engineers had known at the outset what would be done with this hoist, the design would have been very different. Conditions at this mine, from a wire-rope standpoint, have gradually become worse and it is difficult to see how rope service on this hoist can be compared with the service of previous years with any fairness to the wire-

SINCE the last publication of tabulated results of grindability tests by the authors1 the total number of ball-mill tests made has more than doubled, and rod-mill tests have become increasingly important. Nearly all of the standard closed-circuit ball-mill and rod-mill tests made to date are included in the present tabulation, together with additional information not previously published. STANDARD BALL-MILL GRINDABILITY TESTS The method of conducting these closed-circuit tests has not been altered. A sample of the ore or other material is stage-crushed in rolls set at 1/16-in. opening with a 6-mesh screen until all of it has passed the screen. The combined minus 6-mesh screen undersize is mixed, sampled and screen-analyzed, and its apparent specific gravity is determined by packing and shaking in a standard container, and weighing. The apparent specific gravity ordinarily is about 60 per cent of the true specific gravity. The unit volume present in the mill in all tests is 700 c.c. of the packed minus 6-mesh roll product, and the number of grams occupying 700 c.c. is the unit test weight. This weight is placed in the mill dry, ground for the number of revolutions estimated to be necessary, discharged, and screened mechanically in three testing sieves of the mesh size at which the test is to be conducted. The oversize, or circulating load, is weighed, sufficient fresh minus 6-mesh feed is added to bring the total weight up to that of 700 c.c., and the charge is returned to the mill for a second grinding period. All standard ball-mill tests are conducted at 250 per cent circulating load, and the number of revolutions in the mill necessary to obtain this circulating load at any grinding period is estimated from the results of the previous period. The number of net grams of screen undersize produced per revolution of the mill approaches its final equilibrium value after several grinding periods, and this is recorded as the grindability, or relative ease of grinding, of the sample. A cylindrical ball mill, 12 by 12 in. inside, with a smooth lining and rounded corners, is used with a revolution counter. Under standard grinding conditions it runs at 70 r.p.m., and contains a charge of 285 iron balls weighing 20,125 grams, ranging from I ½ to ¾ in. in diameter. The following is a description of the methods used in rescuing men and extinguishing the underground fire at the Pennsylvania mine, Butte, Mont. , This fire, which cost the lives of 21 men, began about 9 p.m., Feb. 14, 1916, at or near a ventilating fan on the 1,200 air-shaft station. This shaft at that time was downcast, while the main hoisting shaft was upcast. Owing to the proximity of the fire to the air shaft, the air in the latter soon became heated, and as the fan on the level was not running— the power having been cut off shortly after the outbreak of the fire—the air shaft became upcast to the 300 level. At this point a blanket of cold air from the surface caused the smoke and gases to be drawn in on that level and carried down again through the workings to the 1,200. A short time after the discovery of the fire, water was turned down the air shaft through a series of pipes around the collar of the shaft, which caused the smoke to recede below the 300, so that within 2 hr. it was possible to search that level for the missing men. From the above it will be apparent why the air shaft was upcast instead of downcast, as under normal conditions, and why men were suffocated at considerable distances from the seat of the fire. The smoke and gases that came up the main hoisting shaft did not diffuse through the workings to any extent. There are doors on all levels in the connections to the main hoisting and air shafts, but in the confusion and running around many of these doors were left open, and this undoubtedly caused the smoke and gases to spread more rapidly than they would otherwise have done. It was necessary for most of the men on the various levels to pass close to the air shaft in going to the hoisting shaft, and when they encountered the smoke and gases in that vicinity a number turned back and climbed down with the direction of the air currents and were then suffocated, while all those who passed through the pall of smoke to the main shaft were saved. There were 220 men in the mine that night, and all but 25 were hoisted to the surface within 30 min. after the discovery of the fire. A section of unstable overburden that has hampered an all-dragline mining operations at Texasgulf's phosphate mine in eastern North Carolina, is being successfully removed by hydraulic dredging. Blocks are dredged, drained, and developed ahead of two large draglines that strip the remaining overburden and mine the 12-m section of ore. Dredging assistance has increased ore production, increased ore recoveries to a maximum, reduced unit costs, and has made it possible to reclaim mined-over land that would be left underwater mined by all dragline methods.
