In the last several years, the coal mining industry has made significant changes in the design of longwall mining systems to make them more productive. Some changes, such as increasing the length of the coal faces and increasing the capacity of the face conveyors, have resulted in problems with achieving sufficient motor torque to start and operate the longwall face conveyors. Other changes, such as increasing the size and/or decreasing the percent impedance of longwall power center transformers, have resulted in problems with the short-circuit currents on the transformer secondaries exceeding the interrupting ratings of the molded case circuit breakers used to protect the secondary circuits. A survey of 24 longwall mining systems in northern West Virginia was conducted to investigate both problems. The results of the survey are presented and analyzed. Several recommended solutions to the problems are presented to enable the coal mining industry to design safe and productive longwall mining systems.

For mining companies facing strong international competition and unfavorable commodities? prices, automation of underground operations has got a potential to increase productivity and help cut cost. However, despite considerable technological progress in this field, there still remain some problems to overcome. Furthermore, a success implementation of automation depends also on numerous operational, organizational and even human factors. In this context, this paper reviews briefly a technological progress with regard to different underground operations. Following that, several issues related to implementation of automated equipment and systems are presented and discussed. Particular emphasis is put on the factors whose importance is sometimes underestimated. Some recommendations in this respect are also given. It is stated that a success of an automation project is a function of many ?winning conditions?, which may be created through a very thorough planning and preparation. It is also underlined that despite achievements made, a vision of a man-less underground mine is not yet a question of near future as it may seem.

"Molybdenum mineralization at Boss Mountain is hosted by the Triassic Takomkane quartz monzodiorite batholith and is associated with a Cretaceous monzogranite stock. Ore has been mined from a sheeted vein system that describes a partial annulus centred upon the apical region of the stock and from subvertical breccia pipes that emanate from the stock. Molybdenite precipitation is coincident with CO2 effervescence from a dilute (1.9 mole o/o NaC/ equivalent) hydrothermal fluid over a temperature range of 250°C to 370°C at a pressure of approximately 350 bars, interpreted to be greater than or equal to the lithostatic load and equivalent to a depth of 1.3 km or less.IntroductionThe chemical and thermal constraints on molybdenum transport and deposition to form molybdenum ore deposits are not well understood. To address this problem, the Boss Mountain mine in central British Columbia, operated by Noranda Mines Ltd., was chosen as a well-described (Soregaroli and Nelson, 1976), relatively small and simple example of a Cordilleran Mo~ deposit. It is situated on the northeast slope of Takornkane Mountain, 10 km west of the community of Hendrix Lake (N.T.S. 93A/2W; latitude 52°06'N, longtitude 120°56'W). Access is from 100 Mile House by nearly 90 km of road, the first 50 km of which are paved."

Process mineralogy forms an integral part of geometallurgy, with ore body characterisation being but one piece of the puzzle in optimising value derived from ore. This value is not only financial, but importantly speaks to sustainability from environmental and social standpoints. The reactive approach of traditional process mineralogy is increasingly being replaced by predictive methods in the geometallurgical sphere, for which mineralogical information must be timeously acquired on judiciously selected sample sets to understand ore variability and its impact on orebody processing. Such processes are not only metallurgical, but must incorporate mining and waste management protocols. Dwindling resources like water and energy also demand innovative approaches for lowering consumption and/or promoting recycling along the value chain. Addressing such challenges relies on appropriate characterisation of ore behaviour under different process regimes. Coupled with this, emerging characterisation tools are increasingly applied to understand the mineralogy of unconventionallypresented and difficult-to-process ores to meet societal and technology demands. Such tools are often accompanied by the generation of large, computationally intensive datasets, for which data management and storage are key requirements, particularly when deciphering temporal trends in ore and process variability. This paper will elaborate on these themes with examples that highlight the importance of process mineralogy throughout the minerals value chain. The Martha epithermal Au-Ag deposit contains multiple generations of quartz veins with a range of textures. We examined: +        vein textures, +        crosscutting vein relationships, and +        the paragenetic sequence within the pit walls as well as a wide range of hand specimens. Samples include host rock, breccia, and veins, but these groups are not distinct; instead, they form a continuum.   Veins at Martha mine show a wide range of textures on a local scale; these textures also change significantly over both the lateral and vertical extent of the pit. Common textures include crustiform bands, comb quartz, colloform bands, platy quartz, massive quartz, drusy quartz, sedimentary textures and brecciation.   Vein grades relate to textures. Many textures, including crustiform, platy, cherty, and sedimentary textures display predominantly low grades, but some textures are linked with high grades, such as ginguro, massive and comb quartz where they are associated with visible base metal sulphides and/or electrum. Host rocks and most breccias are low grade, as most samples contain <2 ppm Au.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest is a nonprofit organization whose objectives are public education about the mineral industries, and recognition of outstanding accomplishments in and contributions to the fields of mineral and fuel resources. Funds are being raised to the support the foundation?s educational programs. Among these is the Educational Outreach Program operated jointly by the foundation and the Arizona Department of Mines and Mineral Resources.

The austenitic and ferritic stainless steels do not undergo any phase transformation that induces very fine grains in the product through thermomechanical processing as practiced in most other steels. Considerable grain refinement can be achieved by intense multistage deformation descending through warm to cold working; notably multi-axial forging of bulk material can attain high strains with diminished risk of cracking. Hot working to improve ductility yields finer grain sizes as the T is reduced and strain rate E raised; increased strain has limited effect due to the steady state regime. Ferritic steels develop subgrains with size diminishing as E rises and T falls with the advantage of retained strain hardening; recrystallization delivers grains several times the cell size. In austenitic steels, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) provides finer grains at higher E and lower T with a lower limit due to intergranular cracking. The DRX grains contain a strengthening substructure that can easily be retained by quenching; if static recrystallization is allowed to occur the grain size rises markedly. Multistage rolling with diminishing T is able to provide grain refinement to the same degree as straining at the finishing T yet provides better ductility. grains on recrystallization. As a result of the strain induced transformation to martensite, small subzero deformations of austenitic or duplex steels produce very high dislocation densities that yield marked grain refinement when they revert upon reheating.

During the extensive research which has been conducted in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne, into the properties of lead and its dilute alloys, the Brinell test has been used for the determination of hardness.The work described herein represents part of an investigation into the influence of various factors on such determinations, particularly when carried out on different qualities of "pure" lead. It is intended to publish the more theoretical and controversial aspects of this research elsewhere.MATERIALS USED AND THEIR PREPARATION FOR TESTINGThe tests to be reported have been conducted on a specially pure electrolytic lead, and several brands of commercially "pure" lead. The analyses of the samples upon which most of the work has been carried out are given in Table 1.Note: Oxygen was not determined, but from the work of H. W. Worner, in the Rosenhain Memorial Laboratory, it appears probable that it was approximately 0-0003% in all samples.

"ONE OF THE FIRST DOCUMENTED APPLICATIONS of soil geochemistry in the Canadian Shield was that carried out by Chisholm in the Kenora district in 1949. This survey proved successful in outlining sulphide-associated gold veins utilizing cold-extractable metals. Since then, mining companies, government agencies - both provincial and federal - and universities have conducted soil investigations. Some of the results are documented in publications, others are on open file in provincial and federal mines departments and, unfortunately, many other investigations with both successful and unsuccessful results are buried in company files or have been discarded. This paper deals with soils within the scope of chemical studies of overburden in the Canadian Shield. The subject is a broad one and some definition is required. The soil investigations discussed herein are those aimed at the testing of specific targets more or less in the source area. This definition distinguishes soil investigations from other overburden studies which commonly monitor metal accumulations at some substantial distance from the metal source. Naturally this distinction is relative, because in many instances there is overlap."

"INTRODUCTION In the usual volumetric determination of uranium, the solution containing uranium is reduced in a Jones reductor, yielding a mixture of trivalent and tetravalent uranium; the trivalent uranium is oxidized to the tetravalent state by bubbling a stream of air through the solution. The resulting solution of tetravalent uranium is titrated with a standard oxidant, generally sulfatoceric acid, dichromate, or permanganate. It seemed likely that the same general procedure could be used in determining semimicro quantities pf uranium if the conditions affecting the variables involved were understood more clearly than at present. In the method described below, the use of ferric sulfate to oxidize tetravalent uranium allows the titration to be made at room temperature in an essentially colorless solution with sulfatoceric acid. The latter oxidant in turn permits the use of the very stable indicator, ferroin; with its sharp color change and exactly reproducible blanks.Solutions of uranyl sulfate were prepared by diluting a stock solution that had been standardized gravimetrically according to the method of Lundell and Knowles (8).3/ Solutions of sulfatoceric acid were prepared according to the directions of G. F. Smith (12) and were standardized against arsenic trioxide in the presence of osmic acid according to the directions of Glen (5). The cerium solutions were stored in 18-liter carboys fitted with siphon arrangements so that the bottles did not need to be opened and protected from light in a dark cupboard. Under these conditions, even the 0.01 N solution changed by less than 1 part per thousand over a period of about 6 months."

Reynolds Metals Company announced plans to increase its rate of production of primary aluminum by 17 thousand tons per year by the end of February. Other producers were expected to increase operating rates during the first quarter of 1976 (see table 10 pg. 29). CHROMIUM -Under the Trade Act of 1974, a petition was filed July 16, 1975, with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) by the Tool and Stainless Steel Industry Committee for Import Relief and the United Steelworkers of America, AFL-CIO, for import relief for certain stainless and alloy tool steel products. The Commission determined on January 16, 1976, in a report to the President, that increased quantities of imports of stainless steel sheet and strip, plate, bar, and rod and alloy tool steel except ingots, blooms, billets, slabs, and sheet bars were a substantial cause of serious injury or threat thereof. The Commission recommended import quotas for the period 1976 through 1980. The President has 2 months in which to act, with his decision subject to a Congressional override.

The two components of pillar design formula being used in South Africa are pillar strength and pillar load. While considerable effort has been directed to the determination of pillar strength, the other half of the safety factor equation, the load, has not received the same amount of attention. The load acting on pillars has always been calculated using the Tributary Area Theory (TAT). This paper summarises the recent studies on coal pillar loading using various numerical models. It concludes that although there are meaningful differences under certain circumstances, there is still a compelling argument to use the TAT in coal pillar design. Les deux parties composantes de la formule de conception de pilier généralement utilisée en Afrique du Sud sont la résistance de pilier et la charge de pilier. Tandis que des efforts considérables on été dirigés vers la détermination de la résistance de pilier, l’autre moitié du facteur de sécurité n’a pas reçu la même attention. La charge agissant sur les piliers a toujours été calculée avec la Théorie d’Aire Tributaire (TAT). L’étude présente résume les études récentes sur la charge de pilier de charbon utilisant des modèles numériques variés. La conclusion est que bien qu’il y ait des différences significatives selon les circonstances, il y a toujours un argument puissant pour utiliser le TAT dans la conception de pilier de charbon. Die in Südafrika für die Auslegung von Pfeilern verwendeten zwei Formelkomponenten sind Pfeilerstärke und Pfeilerbelastung. Während beträchtlicher Aufwand zur Bestimmung der Pfeilerstärke gemacht wurde, wurde der anderen Hälfte der Sicherheitsfaktorsgleichung nicht die gleiche Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet. Die auf die Pfeiler wirkende Last wurde immer unter Verwendung der Tributary Area Theory (TAT) berechnet. Diese Arbeit fast neuere Studien betreffend der Belastung von Kohlepfeilern unter Verwendung verschiedener numerischer Modelle zusammen. Die Schlussfolderung ist, daß obwohl unter bestimmten Vorraussetzungen bedeutende Unterschiede existieren, nach wie vor ein bezwingendes Argument besteht TAT in der Kohlepfeilerauslegung zu verwenden.

Commercial production of synthetic rubber in the United States became a reality in 1931 when E. I. duPont de Nemours, Inc., announced the manufacture of Duprene, a synthetic rubber made by polymerizing r chloroprene. Duprene was later improved and reintroduced as neoprene. Since 1931 other synthetic rubbers and rubberlike materials have been announced and are now produced commercially or are in the pilot-plant stage in the United States. These include Thiokol, Buna S, Perbunan, Koroseal, Vistanex, Flamenol, Ameripol or Hycar, Chemigum, Butyl rubber, and Flexon. None of these is synthetic rubber in the strict chemical meaning of the word synthetic, as none is identical in chemical structure with natural rubber. However, all possess some of the physical properties of natural rubber, and in addition usually have some outstanding property not found in natural rubber that makes them superior for certain uses. Because of these superior qualitites, a considerable demand had arisen for synthetic rubbers before the present emer¬gency, although the price was several times that of natural rubber.

A geologic study of Mines 32 and 33 in Cambria County, Pa., was conducted as part of a methane control research program. Areas of high methane emission and roof instability are encountered which are related to the structural and stratigraphic features that characterize the geologic setting of these mines. Locally the folds trend N 20° E ±2°, the direction of the butt cleat in the Lower Kittanning coal. The face cleat strikes at N 69° W ±2° and the systematic rock joint in the surface bedrock strikes N 67° W ±2°. This suggests that a directional stress oriented N 70° W produced the folds and influenced the directions of coal cleat and systematic joint sets. Analysis of SLAR indicates three directions of prominent regional lineation: N 39° E, N 31° W, and N 70° W. Little gas was encountered during development mining; large volumes of gas are encountered when roof falls. Most of the gas comes from strata above the mined coal; therefore, to control methane, roof instability must be controlled. Roof falls and high rates of methane emission are most likely where less than 30 feet of many thin layers of limestone, shale, and sandstone occurs between the Lower Kittanning coal and the next coal and in zones along the margins of a sandstone channel.

IN the middle of the eighteenth century John Frazier and wife, Sarah Ingraham, removed from Boston, Mass., to Philadelphia, Pa., where he was held in such esteem that we find him one of the Committee which arranged the ball at Washington's inauguration. Their son John. Nalbro Frazier, was prosperous in his mercantile career and fortunate in his wife, .Anne West; who was an important personage in the early life of Professor Frazier. This cultured lady brought into the family an atmosphere of religious enthusiasm, of thoroughness and: of unity of purpose. Her son, Benjamin West Frazier, inherited her traits and displayed them during a. short and active life. Like his father, he engaged in mercantile pursuits, and was a member of the firm of Zimmerman, Frazier & Co. In their interests he lived for a short- time in Montevideo, and on his return married Isabella Zimmerman, a daughter of the head of the firm. Their happy married life was cut short by the death of Mrs. Frazier shortly after the birth of the subject of this sketch which, occurred October 3, 1841. Mr. Frazier did not long survive her, and left his orphaned sons to, the care of his mother, from whom he had inherited a lovable and deeply religious nature, an : artistic temperament and a capacity for thorough work. Whatever of these traits fell by inheritance to these children were strengthened by the influence of their grandmother, and. the purity of mind, the delicacy of sentiment, the refinement of honor, which characterized. Professor Frazier, are due to Anne West Frazier, and are generally present in the characters of all of gentle blood who have been under the sole and immediate influence of a mature and refined woman. The problems inherent in sampling low- grade deposits have long been recognized. As economic grades become lower with increasing metals prices and improvements in recovery technology then the previously difficult sampling problem has consequently become even more demanding. The breakdown of the sample process and error is illustrated by describing in the remainder of the paper some sampling practices that have been utilized on mining and exploration properties and by describing some problems that have been encountered, providing a series of cautionary tales to those involved in any aspect of mine or exploration sampling.

The value of U.S. mineral raw material output reached a record $63.1 billion in 1975. This high exceeded the 1974 value of $55.2 billion by 14 percent. Among the three major mineral categories -fuels, metals, and nonmetals -only fuels showed an increase in value. Both the metal and nonmetal categories showed declines in value. The significance of this nearly $63 billion mineral output can be noted in the fact that it is the basis for the subsequent production of over $270 billion a year in energy and processed materials. Of the 78 individual mineral commodities included in these 1975 totals, only 17 registered gains in output, while 45 registered value increases, reflecting higher prices.

This section of the Handbook deals with general principles to be evaluated in the development of a mining operation. It addresses the major issues that must be examined to fully evaluate a mining venture. Of course, one of the main topics to be evaluated is mine planning, which is covered in more detail in other sections (13, 17) of the Handbook and should be referenced in mine development projects. The topics to be discussed in this introduction include equipment and supplies, infrastructure, utilities, and project management. In any of the aspects mentioned, the current existing conditions at or near the mine site must be evaluated. This will include assessment of current use of utilities, infrastructure, housing, equipment suppliers, etc., as well as anticipated growth, both in the supply aspect of these systems as well as projected usage on these systems. After full assessment of both these aspects, an evaluation must be made as to the requirements the project will place on these items. Assessment must be made as to any up-grades required to bring the project on line, what impact the project will have on existing or expanded systems, and anticipated future growth impacts on support systems not only of the project but of other surrounding industry and urban devel-opment
