The production of metallic titanium and titanium-rich alloys in forms useful to the engineer involves the use of certain techniques not usually necessary in fabricating the commoner metals and alloys. However, not all stages in the handling and shaping of titanium-base materials require the application of unfamiliar methods. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate where the well-known techniques are applicable as well as to outline the unusual operations which are necessitated by certain chemical characteristics of titanium.In brief, the characteristics just mentioned are manifestations of the very great reactivity of titanium, especially at elevated temperatures. Liquid titanium burns vigorously when brought into contact with air. It also reacts with practically all refractories, causing damage to the latter as well as undesirable contamination of the metal. Even solid titanium undergoes serious superficial contamination when heated above 800°C. in air for more than a few minutes. In addition to an oxide skin being formed, oxygen enters into solid solution in the surface of the metal causing the latter to become hardened and eventually embrittled.Up to date, titanium has been made only on a pilot plant scale by methods which produce a spongy or powdered product. Refractory problems have prevented the development of chemical reduction methods for making titanium in the form of a liquid pool from which ingots of useful size could be cast. Due to environmental concerns in urban construction, many typically simple projects become very complex or feasibly impossible. The introduction of relatively new concepts has redefined "impossible", again simplifying these projects and making them "possible". Case Study One covers the use of Pressed-in Tubular Piles on portions of the Long Island Expressway in Queens, New York. Innovations in the design, material and installation method solved many typically inherent problems on projects of this type and resulted in cantilevered walls that supported a 35ft (10.668m) excavation. Design predictions and actual measured deflections of this wall were within millimeters. Case Study Two covers the use of Pressed-in Tubular Piles on portions of the Hodogaya Bypass in Yokohama, Japan. Innovations in equipment development allowed for a cantilevered retaining wall to be constructed without affecting the adjacent right-of-way, dramatic reduction of the overall construction duration and installation of tubular piles in soils with SPT N values greater than 160.

OCI Wyoming mines two flat-lying trona seams that are 3- to 3.5-m- (10- to 11.5-ft-) thick, about10 m (33 ft) apart and 250-m- (820-ft-) deep at its Big Island Mine in Wyoming. Continuous miners and a yielding-pillar system have contributed to improvements in resource recovery and productivity. The use of yield pillars minimizes the stresses transmitted from the upper to the lower seam. However, yielding must not impact the good, long-term stability needed to prevent subsidence for a large portion of the mine beneath the Green River channel.

Eight blasts were fired in a 2-1/2-ft bench in the Stewartville member of the Galena Limestone formation in an aggregate quarry near Stewartville, Minn. The shots were dimensionally proportional to production-size bench blasts and were about 5 to 10 percent of full scale. The effects of site, timing of initiation, and burden-to-spacing ratio were studied in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial experiment, using three boreholes, caw;, containing a 1/2-in charge diameter of high-density ammonia dynamite, in each blast. Detonation velocity measurements indicated that the dynamite detonated satisfactorily in the 1/2-in charge diameter. The effects of the three experimental variables were analyzed by weight for the percentage of oversized material produced and for size distributions determined by screening the entire muckpiles. The bench faces were painted before each shot in an effort to determine the origin of the oversized material. The square pattern (burden and spacing = 15 in) produced finer overall fragmentation and less oversized material than the rectangular pattern (burden = 15 in; spacing = 22-1/2 in). Sites 1 and 2 were about ft apart. Although site 2 produced slightly better overall fragmentation than site 1, the amounts of oversized material produced showed no significant difference. The timing of initiation (instantaneous or delayed) did not significantly influence the overall fragmentation or the amount of oversized material produced.

Newmont roasting plant in Carlin, Nevada commenced operating in December 1994. Over the years, refractory ores and pyrite concentrates from different gold deposits constituted the feed to the facilities. Historical plant performance indicated that the roasting temperature was the main variable that affected the structural characteristics of the calcine which, in turn, affected the recovery of gold by cyanidation. Gold recovery as a function of roaster temperature was closely monitored since October 2000. Original design temperature was 550oC. Lower roaster temperatures of around 500oC resulted in gold recovery increase by more than 6 percent. This increase was directly related to an increase of the surface area of the calcine. The implementation of an “intelligent” process control system helped significantly in achieving steady low roasting temperatures thus achieving high gold recoveries between 92 and 93 percent. Under those conditions, several roasting campaigns with high-arsenic-containing ores were conducted, which resulted in a significant decrease of gold recovery. The reduced gold recovery was caused by the loss of surface area (e.g. porosity) of the calcine as the arsenic content of the roaster feed increased.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heat¬ing value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the fusing temperature of ash and the free-swelling index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions./ issued by the Bureau; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau's laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made.Analyses of the delivered coal and ""tipple"" samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. Moreover, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.The Government purchased approximately 5-1/2 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1951. In connection with these purchases, the Bureau analyzed 10,700 samples. These are published for the use of Government officials and the public. A series of publications s been completed on coal analyses by States, or, where production is small in any State, by groups of adjacent States. In addition to analytical data showing composition and quality of coals of the States, the publications contain brief descriptions of the geological structure of the coal basins, typical mining conditions in the various districts, the principal economic data of the industry, and the relationship of mine or channel samples to delivered and tipple samples. The study of gas emitted from face coal samples at the coal face is part of an investigation of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas. Normally, seam gas essentially comprises methane of which the origin in the metamorphism of coal is undoubted. The origin of other gases sometimes occurring in high proportion in seam gas, particularly carbon dioxide, is more controversial. A simple meter for rapidly assessing gas in coal was developed. Tests with the meter enabled comparisons of seam gas in face coal at some outbursting and nonoutbursting mines, and under various working conditions. The varying results of widespread testing suggest certain trends, including some prospect of recognising outbursting potential at the coal face.INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this work is identification of differences in gas condition between coals subject to instantaneous outbursts and coals which have not outburst, and between faces of coals which will and which will not subsequently outburst. Any comparative test should be conducted right at the coal face on coal about to be worked and the results of testing should be available after a short period. Moreover, the method and the comparison of results should require no special skill, and be well within the capacity of junior mine officials. Experiments have been made in a laboratory heavy media separator at various specific gravities of separation using zinc chloride solution and magnetite suspension as media for different types of coals. The results indicate that the magnetite bath gives at better separation than zinc chloride solution. Even though the probable error remains the same for most conditions of operation, the error area is found to have a wide variation which emphasises the importance of the error area over probable error in evaluating the performance of a cleaning unit.

Longwall mining and related subsidence, and watercourse diversion for surface mining operations have the potential to impact on fluvial geomorphic processes and the health of river systems. This is evident in the Isaac River in central Queensland. The scale and likelihood of these impacts are a function of the extent of existing and proposed mining developments and of the ongoing geomorphic, hydrologic and ecological processes within the Isaac River. Understanding the objectives for the river, the past and ongoing processes at work, the cumulative impacts of longwall mining development and the options for managing those impacts is essential for the development of an effective strategy to manage the health of the river system. An assessment has been undertaken to identify and understand the cumulative impacts of mining subsidence and other mining influences on geomorphic processes and waterway health in the Isaac River over a river length of approximately 100 km near Moranbah in central Queensland. The assessment included the development of a vision and objectives for waterway health. The assessment has identified mining and landuse changes that have impacted on the hydrology, geomorphology, ecology and hence the health of the Isaac River. The assessment has then sought to identify the cumulative impact of longwall mining and related subsidence on current stream condition and the proposed vision for the system. The primary impact of longwall mining on the river was found to be associated with sediment transport. The investigation included assess- ment of total sand available for transport, the volume of sand transported annually and the fluvial process response to subsidence. Recommendations have been developed for the management of the system and for longwall mining to increase system robustness and achieve the river health objectives.

Pillar collapses are events that due to their severe consequences can be classified as high risk. The design of pillars in underground room-and-pillar operations should migrate to risk-based design approaches. The authors of this work proposed a risk-based pillar design methodology that integrates stochastic discrete element modeling for pillar strength estimation, and stochastic finite volume modeling (FVM) for stress estimation. This paper focuses on the stochastic FVM component for stress estimation. The mining and geomechanical aspects of a case study mine (CSM) are described and pillar stresses are estimated by using three approaches: (1) analytical solutions, (2) 2D finite element modeling, and (3) 3D finite volume modeling. This operation extracts a 30° dipping deposit, which makes current underground stone mine design guidelines inapplicable for this CSM. This work compares results from each stress estimation approach and discusses uses the point estimate method as a simplified stochastic approach to evaluate the effect of rock mass elastic properties variability on pillar stress distribution. Results from this work show that the three estimation approaches lead to different estimations, possibly, due to the wide range of assumptions each estimation approach considers. It was also determined that the horizontal to vertical stress ratio has a significant impact on pillar stress magnitude. Therefore, it is recommended to perform in situ stress measurements, or assume worst-case-scenario values to account and reduce uncertainty due to this parameter. The stochastic stress estimation approach used in this paper provides results that can integrate a risk-based pillar design framework.

Coal occurs at many scattered localities in Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon, but in most of the known occurrences thick coal beds are of small extent and the coal generally contains a high percentage of impurities. The coal beds occur at many different horizons in strata of Cretaceous and Tertiary age. Bituminous coal has been found in several areas, the most extensive of which is the Eden Ridge field of Oregon. Lignite also occurs in many places, but the only extensive deposit is in the Goose Creek field of Idaho, Nevada, and "Utah. The coal reserves of the region are largely of subbituminous rank; most of the subbituminous coal is in the Black Mesa field of northeastern Arizona and the Coos Bay field of Oregon. The Black Mesa field contains more than 80 percent of the coal reserves of all ranks but is remote from both transportation facilities and centers of consumption. Substantial reserves ill the Coos Bay field are favorably situated with respect to transportation and markets. ARIZONA Subbituminous coal occurs in the Black Mesa, Pinedale, and Gallup coal fields in Apache, Navajo, and Coconino Counties, Ariz. (fig. 1). Bituminous coal occurs in the Deer Creek field in Pinal and Graham Counties and in a small area in Apache County at the north-east corner of the State. All the coal beds are in strata of Cretaceous age. The coal in the Gallup field and at the northeast corner of the State lies in the Western edge of the San Juan structural basin. "Vest and south of this basin the coal-bearing strata have been removed by erosion except in high mesas.

The main role of slag in oxygen converter processes is to absorb the non-volatile oxidation products of hot metal impurities, Si, P, Mn, Ti, V, etc. The importance of converter slag as deP and de Smedia has ceased with implementation of special pre- and post-converter treatments. The transfer from top blowing (LD) to combined blowing converters has decreased the amount of slagged iron that, together with the tendency towards lower silicon and manganese contents, has decreased slag to steel ratio. Still the control of slag forming and behaviour during the blow is of great importance. In this paper the thermodynamics of the slag forming reactions, the role of slag in the modern oxygen converter process for impurity elimination, splashing, lining wear, dust formation and post combustion are discussed on the basis of common knowledge and experience of Finnish steel plants.

Effective pyrometallurgical process vessel design requires accurate assessment of the heat fluxes through the walls of the furnace. This is particularly important for freeze lining operation which is designed to protect refractory materials exposed to chemically corrosive molten contents, or facilitate high temperature operation when the refractory materials are used at conditions close to their service limits. Numerical modelling of fluid flow and heat transfer in process vessels is often used to aid in the design of process vessels. Sophisticated models are used to analyse the three dimensional flow and heat transfer predicting the effects of electrical heating, magnetic stirring, buoyancy, shear forces, various cooling effects and ultimately heat fluxes at the walls of the furnace and refractory. Traditionally these models are applied to the separate single fluid systems in a vessel such as the freeboard region including the arc, the slag region and the metal bath. Boundary conditions such as shear forces and heat fluxes between connecting regions such as the slag and metal bath are either estimated or carried over from separate solutions. Shortcomings in these traditional approaches include the estimation of sometimes critical boundary conditions leading to unreliable heat flux calculations. Also when boundary conditions are carried over between solutions, the process is difficult to set up, time-consuming and finally not fully coupled. In this paper the definition and results of a fully integrated numerical model of a complete arc furnace are presented. The most important mechanisms acting in an arc furnace were considered, including the fields of electrical potential, current, magnetism, momentum, heat transfer and radiation. Temperature dependant properties included electrical conductivity, density, viscosity, and thermal conductivity. The geometry consists of the freeboard, the arc, slag, metal baths and different refractory regions. Although the combined model of air, slag and metal would be defined as a multi-phase problem it is not solved as such. Instead the different fluids are separated by sets of special solid baffles. These baffles allow the implicit transfer of current, magnetism, heat transfer and shear forces between the different fluids and disallow mixing of the separate fluids. The strengths of the integrated model are threefold: Firstly, it provides robustness in defining the geometry and boundary conditions for the overall model. Secondly, it provides the capability to switch on and off individual mechanisms such as buoyancy, magnetic stirring and shear forces in order to observe their individual importance. Finally, it provides a useful tool in the design process through its ability to obtain results of parameter changes in short time scales.

The objective of this program was to develop a system to extinguish coal mine fires by remote sealing of the underground passageways. The system developed had to be versatile enough to function under a wide range of operating conditions, including large variations in passageway geometry, depth of mine, water conditions, both in the mine and at the surface, and rubble in the mine passage. The system developed had to include instrumentation for the remote probing of the passageway prior to sealing, a system for sealing the mine passages, and instrumentation for remote monitoring of the quality of the seal during and after construction. These objectives were successfully achieved during this program. The remote mine sealing capability of the system was satisfactorily demonstrated in a field test conducted at the Eastern Associated Coal Corporation Federal No, 1 Mine in Grant Town, West Virginia.

Several laboratory model test results for the determination of the ultimate uplift capacity of single and group metal piles embedded in near-saturated clay have been presented. Based on the uplift test results for single piles, the variation of the adhesion factor with the undrained shear strength of clay has been determined, and an empirical correlation for estimation of the adhesion factor in soft and medium clays has been presented. The group efficiency of piles under uplifting load depends on factors such as embedment ratio, undrained shear strength of clay, the number of piles in a group, and the center-to-center spacing of the piles.
