Lord (Geological Survey of Western Australia): During the last few days in Kalgoorlie here we have heard on various occasions of the great job the mining engineers have done persisting against rising costs and increasing salaries without a rise in the price of gold. I think it has been somewhat overlooked that it has been difficult to find additional ore as well. I consider that geologists also should be commended on their action in persisting to search for more orebodies. This goes on in any mining community, but in Kalgoorlie in particular, I believe, over the last few years that it has been more difficult all the time to find additional orebodies and the Companies are calling for higher grades to offset the economic condition. I feel that this paper by Mr. Finucane shows that the geologists have persevered on an idea and discovered that they can find additional orebodies in the calc schist where previously it was thought that these did not occur. This has added many tons to the ore reserves, and although it is not very significant at the moment, the significance will probably improve as more work is done.The whole thing has shown us the importance of economic geology. Mr Finucane has had many years of experience here and he has given us a very able exposition of the economics of ore finding, and there are not many questions that one could pose to him, because most of the information he presented is obviously fact borne out by drilling, underground development and lining up the ore channels. He did briefly touch on ore shoots-the Oroya shoot and several others. It would be very good if we could, and I feel sure...

The report presents the results corresponding to the analysis of a lining system for tunnels in soil and soft rock in creep-active ground. The purpose of the analysis is to evaluate the performance of a lining at each construction stage. The steps include: 1. Accurate representation of the initial undisturbed state of stress 2. Excavation, 3. Lining installation 4. Injection of mortar and its curing, and 5. Short-, medium- and long-term creep behaviour in the surrounding soil/rock. The response of a prototype tunnel is simulated using the computational finite element framework MSC.marc2008.

Agglomeration for Copper Heap Leaching Agglomeration of ore is a method which can be used to eliminate the migration of fine grained particles throughout a leach heap. Without agglomeration, fine ore particles are able to migration within the heap, clogging flow channels and producing large areas where access of the solution is poor. In order to gain the benefits of agglomeration and improve agglomerate strength even further in copper heap leaching, an economical, acid-resistant binder is needed. However, most binders have been used without any systematic reasoning. A set of novel testing methods were developed, including a soak test, percolation flooded columns, and larger long-term leach columns. The soak test compares the degree of breakdown when agglomerates are subjected to an acidic environment. While the percolation flooded columns and larger long-term leach columns evaluate the flow of leach solution throughout the ore bed. Systematic studies have been completed on a wide range of binders using these novel testing procedures. It was found that for a low grade chalcocite ore, which was rich in silica, from a southwest US mine, polyacrylamides reduced the fines migration the best in the novel soak test. The non-ionic binder, in particular, was found to reduce fines migration as much as 93 per cent. Several of the binders tested were shown to increase the hydraulic conductivities of the agglomerated ore up to 2.5 mm/sec, compared to a hydraulic conductivity of only 0.25 mm/sec when no binder was used. These binders also prevented 'slumping' of the ore, which indicates a decrease in breakdown of the agglomerates. The use of a binder also showed no interference with leaching reactions in long-term leaching experiments.

In engineering in general, close agreement between theoretical predictions and structural performance is rare—this is particularly true in rock slopes. Since the complexity of natural arrangements makes exact theoretical solutions of associated structural problems almost impossible, the role of theory should be that of developing guides or markers to which observations and experience can be related. The author in this paper has outlined the results of a theoretical study of highly idealized models which represent both granular materials and jointed rock. Some important practical considerations result—especially in regard to horizontal stresses—when theory is compared with full-scale experience. In the field of engineering activity, specific examples of close agreement between theoretical prediction and structural performance are rare. Particularly is this so for the case of rock slopes, where, owing to the complexity of the natural arrangements, it is quixotic to expect exact theoretical solutions to the associated structural problems. The role of theory is rather that of developing signposts or guide rails to which observations and experience can be related. It is with this in mind that the present paper has been prepared; the author's aim has been to set out briefly the results of a theoretical study of highly idealized models which represent both granular materials and jointed rock. Despite the idealization of the problem, it will be seen that the theoretical conclusions are in accord with full-scale experience, particularly as far as horizontal stresses are concerned, and they point to some important practical considerations. CLASSIFICATION OF ROCK SLOPES At the risk of over-simplification, an attempt has been made to classify the problem of rock slopes into three broad categories with respect to internal stress systems. These are illustrated in Fig. 1. It is tacitly assumed in this classification that the strength of individual particles is very much greater than the interparticle strength whether the particles are the crystals of an igneous rock (Case I) or the blocks of Cases 2 and 3. The Homogeneous Monolith: This case is representative of uniform unjointed rock. Under relatively low stress conditions the internal stress system may approximate to that of an elastic body as given by Terzaghi.' It is more usual, however, for overall stability, to consider the material as a rigid plastic which yields in shear when S =C + c tan 4> where S is the shear yield stress, o is the normal stress on the surface of failure, and C and d are empirical constants according to the Mohr-Coulomb criterion of failure. Sokolovsky has recently developed, for the first time, a series of mathematical solutions to problems involvinga C, mass subject to self-weight. He demonstrates that for such a case a semi-arch (Fig. 2) is stable. A corollary of this argument is that for a true C, d material a curved overhanging slope is possible and such an observation may well aid field identification of these materials. The shape of the curved slope face is however directly dependent on the C-value, and from the long-term point of view this is a most difficult value to establish with any degree of confidence. It is customary to measure C and 0 in some form of shear test—usually a triaxial compression test—on core specimens sampled from the rock, and as far as the author is aware the present case is the only one in which, as far as overall stability is concerned, such tests are

One of the biggest challenges for the mining industry is, quite literally, how to the keep the equipment rolling. There is a limited amount of companies that manufacture the 4.2-m- (14-ft-) tall, 5,670-kg (12,500-lb-) tires needed for the haul trucks that are approaching the 362 t (400 st) pay-load class, such as Terex?s MT6300-AC and Caterpillar?s 797F. And, while these might be the most impressive tires, they are not the only ones that are in short supply. The shortage of tires has affected just about every kind of machine, and the demand for those tires has been extremely high for more than five years with no end to the shortage in site. American Tire Corp. (www.americantire.us) is one of the companies working to supply tires to the mining industry. It announced that the demand for its 1.6-m (63-in.) tires that have a zero failure history globally is great and that the company signed contracts worth more than $500 million at MinExpo. The material presented in this paper describes experimental work to determine the effect of variations in suction nozzle design upon inlet flow conditions. Four entrance profile shapes were examined under controlled conditions of slurry flow and it was found that the straight ended nozzles had consistently higher entrance losses than the straight taper or the ellipse, and that the circular arc profile nozzles were the most efficient. Subordinate considerations were the measurement of the quantities and the forces involved.As the work progressed, three distinct phases in the pattern of flow were apparent and the static pressures in each were carefully examined. An inlet zone was found to be unstable in changing boundary conditions, a transition zone was largely independent of slurry density and in a zone of stability the pressures were found to be directly related to the characteristics of the flowing pulp. In this zone pressure measurements were reproducible within ± 2 per cent regardless of changing boundary conditions.The effect of varying the "1" parameter of nozzles with a part circular entrance profile was examined and it was found that flow conditions approaching the ideal were obtained when the radius of curvature was between 0·40 and 0·550.

The production and dispersion of metal nanoclusters onto inorganic supports and amorphous carbon rest on well consolidated technologies belonging to the realm of industrial catalysis and of basic catalysis research (1). In spite of the existence of a variety of specific synthetic strategies, their very rationale relies on three main approaches i. e.: A: precursors of both the metal nanoparticles and of the relevant supports (or the support itself) are intimately mixed (even let to react) at ambient conditions and then thermo-reduced according to very controlled protocols (2); B: precursors of metal nanoclusters are let to be adsorbed onto suitable supports from the gas or liquid phase and subsequently thermally decomposed (3); C: metastable size-controlled metal nanoclusters are previously generated in a liquid medium and subsequently transferred onto pre-formed support particles (4). The production and dispersion of metal nanoclusters onto organic soluble supports is also a rather well documented academic praxis (5, 6, 7, 8) able to provide e.g. size-controlled Au0 nanoclusters of 4.4±1.7 nm (5). Our group started in 1997 developing (9) an innovative approach to the synthesis of metal nanoclusters dispersed inside insoluble, albeit accessible (see below) mechanically robust gel-type resins (10), which procedure was tested so far on palladium metal. Metal ions are previously dispersed upon ion-exchange inside of the polymer framework, followed by chemical reduction and by the aggregation of born metal atoms into nanoclusters, the size of which is templated (11, 12) by the three-dimensional intercommunicating meshes that build up the overall polymer framework (Figure 1).

This article analyzes the social acceptability process of a mining project located in an existing city. It will explore how the principles of sustainable development have been integrated in the project of the Canadian Malartic open pit mine held by the Osisko Mining Corporation, and the corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives proposed to strengthen the social acceptability of the project. This mine is located on the ancient south quarter of Malartic and has required the displacement of hundred of houses and five institutions. The location and the inherent social impacts generated by the relocation of the citizens of the south quarter makes this case particularly interesting to understand social dynamics in an era of environmental consciousness. These major constraints of the mine generate high expectations within the urban population with regard to the social and economic benefits it will receive from the project. In a context where society demands higher CSR from the corporation, Osisko is closely followed regarding their actions toward the sustainable development principles to see if they respect the environment and the desires of the community. From the beginning, the company had to be a model of sustainable development in various aspects reflected by the manifold interest of the population. To understand the endeavor made by the company to fulfill the demand of CSR, we will analyze how the company understood sustainable development principles and what CSR initiatives Osisko company put forward. We will explore the involvement of the company in various social aspects like employment, employee satisfaction, and the level of commitment to non-discrimination policy in employment, notably with the native populations. We will also take a closer look at the relationship built by the company with the community and the level of commitment with the various stakeholders of the community. In this way, we will be able to seize the level of involvement of the company in the fulfillment of the principles of sustainable development toward a higher CSR, and to specify the trajectory adopted to build social acceptance.

THE Taranaki oil-field is situated on the western side of the North Island of New Zealand, at about its widest part, and may be said to be the most compact and fertile part of the Dominion, for, with the exception of the upper half of Mount Egmont and of the ranges adjoining, which absorb 36,000 acres, the whole of the area, minus what is taken up by the rivers and streams is suitable for settlement, and certainly two-thirds is good land. The gross area of the district is 2,417,299 acres. The principle rivers are the Wanganui, Mokau, Waitara, Patea and Waiwakaiho. THE transportation of solids in pipe lines is a matter of deep concern in many fields of engineering. Much experimental and theoretical work has been done in an effort to devise means of designing pipe lines that will satisfactorily transport given solid loads, but there remain many unanswered questions in this field. The present discussion will be confined to a rather narrow portion of this field and will endeavor to point out certain factors that may well be considered when comparing the relative economy of various installations. The data have been presented previously but a new interpretation was prompted by a suggestion in a paper by Professor O'Brien,1 of the University of California, that the friction work per pound of dry material should be considered in determining the relative efficiency of various installations. This method of considering relative economy in various pipe lines leads to some rather unexpected conclusions, especially with reference to the economy of large pipe sizes. A previous suggestion by the writer3 concerning the economy of a rather peculiar type of installation is strengthened. It is not believed that the considerations set forth herein apply directly in the case of dredge lines, where economy is largely a matter of a high rate of pumping in order to reduce the unit overhead charge. However, it is believed that some value may be gained from these considerations in cases involving the disposal of a fixed amount of solids per unit time with a minimum expenditure of energy and at a low cost for replacement of worn pipes. Such situations are not uncommon in the disposal of mill tailings and the disposal of solids deposited from irrigation waters. It was found that data leading to general conclusions for various pipe sizes were not available but certain definite trends are indicated and methods of analyzing available data are presented in the hope that they may be of assistance in preparing engineering estimates on designs of pipe lines of the type described above. Small diameter cast-in-place bored piles (pinpiles) have been installed throughout the world since 1952, but only more recently in the United States. The special features of their construction and performance makes them ideally suited for structural underpinning applications in difficult ambient and geological conditions. This paper describes the underpinning of part of a major industrial facility near Mobile, Alabama. In addition to being a most interesting and successful case history, per se, the paper also describes in detail a fundamental test pile program which has afforded a unique insight into the basics of load transfer mechanisms.

Small scale gold mining operations in Papua New Guinea (PNG) have been observed to use very low flow rates of water in sluice boxes. In a series of laboratory experiments carried out to determine whether this approach was unsatisfactory or not for their situation, indications were obtained that it had some advantages in the recovery of fine gold but at the cost of considerable throughput. The separation mechanisms operating in such a system are analysed.

"The McArthur River uranium deposit is the single richest uranium ore body developed in the world to date. The ore body’s average grade is 15% U3O8. Proven reserves are in excess of 450 million pounds. The grinding circuit is located underground. The ground ore is pumped to a surface facility where the slurry is thickened and loaded into containers for shipping to the Key Lake mill 78 kilometers to the south.The paper will briefly describe the mining method employed. The underground ore handling and grinding circuit, and surface facilities including slurry load out, wastewater treatment and the freeze plant will be described in detail. The paper will emphasize radiation and safety procedures that are followed to minimize operator exposure to radiation risks.LOCATIONThe McArthur River mine is located 78 kilometres north of the Key Lake mill. It is located at latitude 57’ N in northern Saskatchewan, within the southern boundary of the Athabasca formation. The nearest town is Pinehouse, located 320 kilometres to the south. Access to the mine is by an all weather road and by a private airstrip.HISTORYThe McArthur River Operation is jointly owned by Cameco Corporation (69.805%) and Cogema Resources Inc. (30.195%). Exploration for uranium in the McArthur River area started in 1980 by the Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation, a predecessor company of Cameco.In 1984, a 12-kilometre long basement conductor was identified at a depth exceeding 500 metres. Systematic exploration drilling of this conductor resulted in the discovery of the P2 North deposit. Subsequent surface drilling programs from 1989 to 1992 delineated a narrow ore zone over a strike length of 1700 meters at a depth of 500 to 600 metres. At this time, geological reserves for the deposit were estimated to be 2.4 million tonnes at a grade of 5.0% U3O8 for a uranium content of 260 million pounds U308"

The Eskay Creek Mine is a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia. The mine started operations in late1994. For the first three years, ore was crushed to -50 mm(-2 in.), blended to satisfy smelter terms and shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Preliminary evaluations indicated that a complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. So markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations began at a production rate of 300 t/d (330stpd).

"Wireless communication in the mineral processing environment is not as simple as it is in the home or office environment. The correct design of a wireless network in the mineral processing environment can offer a more flexible and lower cost installation than the transitional fiber networks. However with the flexibility of a wireless solution, also comes some limitations. By reviewing the plant requirements along with weighting the wireless benefits and limitations it is possible to design a network that combines the robustness of a wired solution with the mobility of a wireless solution. This paper addresses some wireless design considerations and it looks at some real life examples in the following areas: •,Meshed wireless network for high levels of redundancy •,Wireless instruments (such as HART, Modbus and others) •,Portable devices for mobile operators •,Network monitoring for plant personnel (it’s no longer just for IT people) INTRODUCTION Typical networks used in the mineral processing environment consist of a fiber network infrastructure with industrial switches used to connect the network devices. These fiber networks can be redundant or put into a ring topologies to offer a higher level of availability. Fiber networks have the benefits of: •,Immunity to noise from power and grounding issues •,Ability to span long distances (2km for multimode fiber and 20km for single mode fiber) •,Maintainable “off-the-shelf” technology Fiber networks however have some drawbacks, such as: •,Relativity high initial installation cost for cable trays, poles, trenches and pulling and termination of cable. •,Fixed geographic topology, adding future fiber drops may be challenging and expensive. •,Mobile users are not considered. Integrating a wireless network with a fiber network can offer the best of two worlds, a reliable high speed backbone for mission critical activities and a wireless network for remote applications and mobile users."

Difficulties were experienced in the identification of carbonate minerals intimately associated with iron oxides in the so called carbonate ore, which occurs at depth in the Iron Duke Orebody.Determination of refractive indices by examination under the microscope using the immersion method, together with inferred chemical composition indicates that dolomite and parankerite are common constituents. Histograms of the manganese and sulphur contents strongly suggest that manganese is associated with the carbonate minerals, and that the highest sulphur assays occur near the base of the carbonate body.From the present work it is concluded that refractive indices indicate only a very approximate composition for carbonates of the parankerite type.The different carbonate minerals occur in irregular zones.INTRODUCTIONThe Iron Duke deposit is situated in the southern portion of the South Middleback Range on Eyre Peninsula, S.A., 30 miles from Whyalla. (Fig. 1).Drilling at Iron Duke revealed a large body of so called carbonate ore, which was tested in detail at cross section 1000 ft. S by three diamond drill holes, DDH.57, 67 and 78. (Fig. 2)Most specimens of carbonate ore described below were obtained from DDH 67 and 78.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe South Middleback Range is composed of two parallel ridges trending north-south. The Iron Duke orebody is situated on the southern portion of the western ridge. (Fig.1) .The rocks of these ranges belong to the Middleback Group which rests on a gneiss complex. Their age is considered to be Middle Precambrian or late Archaean.

El presente trabajo señala la geología, litología y mineralización del yacimiento minero El Tapado del distrito Yanacocha, situado al norte de Cajamarca. Este se encuentra conformado por diferentes depósitos auríferos epitermales de alta sulfuración, los cuales se desarrollan dentro de un vulcanismo calco-alcalino de composición andesítica a dacítica de edad Mioceno y son correlacionables con la Formación Porculla del Grupo Calipuy. La geología del depósito está conformada por rocas porfiríticas (intrusiones) y flujos piroclásticos tales como tufos de cristales, tufos líticos y brechas piroclásticas afectados por eventos eruptivos de brechas freáticas - freatomagmáticas. Todas estas rocas han sufrido posterior alteración hidrotermal con ensambles típicos de sistemas tipo ácido-sulfato. La mineralización económica está controlada por procesos hidrotermales y se encuentra asociada a sílice masiva y sílice vuggy ( 1-10 g/t Au y estructuras de hasta 136 g/t Au ) y en menor grado sílice alunita y sílice granular (moderada a baja ley).

Rock preconditioning in advance of mining was shown to be an effective means of rock-burst control based on the results of a field demonstration carried out on the 7700 level of the Hecla Mining Company's Star mine. Mining through the preconditioned zone was characterized by greatly reduced rates of released seismic energy and no bumping or rock bursting occurred within the preconditioned zone. Mining above the preconditioned zone was characterized by greatly increased rates of released seismic energy and rock bursting, particularly where the vein became very narrow in waste zones. This increased incidence of rock bursting points out the need for stope preconditioning to be carried out on an entire stope block basis. The data obtained from the monitoring of the mining above the preconditioned zone on the 7700 level will be extremely useful in evaluating any future stope block preconditioning experiments on the lower levels or the Star mine.

U-Th isotope studies of recent volcanic rocks may be used to evaluate the depths and rates of melt generation beneath midocean ridges and ocean islands. Island arc rocks exhibit a similar range in Th isotopes to that seen in both MORB and om, but while those with high (230Th/232Th) tend to have excess 238U, many of those with low (230Th/232Th) are in isotope equilibrium. The excess 238U is attributed to the preferential mobilisation of U in hydrous fluids from the subducted slab within the last 100 000 years, whereas the low Th isotope ratios in the higher-K arcs are primarily due to the introduction of subducted sediment. Preliminary results from mineral separates from lavas on Soufriere on the island of St. Vincent indicate that some of the minerals crystallised up to 50 000 years prior to eruption.
