[The Yarnell gold deposit in the Weaver mining district, Yavapai County, Arizona, occurs in a structurally controlled, hydrothermally altered zone in a 1700 Ma granodioritic intrusive. Both potassic and sericitically altered rocks around and above the low-angle, northeast striking Yarnell fault are known to host economic gold mineralization. A wider envelope of weakly-propylitic altered rock also occurs in this area. During mineralization, strong sericitization accompanied several stages of quartz (±adularia) veining, stockwork formation, localized silicification and potassic replacement, in association with deposition of specularite, pyrite (now oxidized) and gold. The footwall of the fault is also sericitically altered but poorly mineralized. Mineralization along the Yarnell fault continues both northeast and southwest from the main deposit, although the thickness of the zone and associated alter avian envelope diminish away from the orebody A sample of undo formed illite taken from the Yarnell fault zone was K/Ar dated at 69 + 1.6 Ma. This date reflects a minimum age for both mineralization and latest movement on the fault. Gold mineralization is accompanied by modest increases in Ag, As. Cu and Mo content. Both CO2- and H2O- rich fluid inclusions were studied and suggest mesothermal pressures and temperatures of formation for the deposit. Ninety-six reverse circulation holes and four diamond drill holes outline a bulk-minable mineral reserve of'4.1 million tons at 0.051 oz of Au per ton. An additional 2.7 million tons at 0.017 oz of Au per ton occurs in a low-grade zone above and subparallel to the main mineralized zone. Total calculated mineral inventory stands at 6.8 million tons at a grade of 0.038 oz of Au per ton, with a waste-to-ore ratio of 1.45:1. Column leach tests indicate that cyanide heap leach gold recoveries should exceed 70%.]

Since 2016, electromagnetic interference (EMI) of personal dust monitors (PDMs) with magnetic proximity detection systems (PDSs) has been observed in underground coal mines. The EMI causes the magnetic field measurements of a PDS to change, which, in turn, alters the calculated location of the miner relative to the machine. Any altered location calculation can potentially cause the PDS to fail to warn a worker who is at an unsafe distance from the machine, arousing a serious concern on safety hazard caused by EMI in underground mines. The search for EMI mitigation strategies led to the development and use of large shielding pouches and boxes to hold the entire PDM to reduce its magnetic emission. Research on these pouches and boxes found that although they were able to reduce the emitted radiation from the PDM, they also disturbed the magnetic field of the PDS, affecting its performance. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have focused on shielding internal PDM components rather than shielding the entire PDM. The PDM air pump motor is one of the PDM components that has been identified as a major source of electromagnetic radiation and has been selected for further study and tests. The measurements show that a small copper or aluminum foil enclosure can effectively reduce the magnetic emission of the motor by between 50 and 85% at 73 kHz. This study compares the test results of the air pump motor with various cost-effective shielding materials. The data provided in this paper can serve as a reference for shielding enclosure design of the PDM air pump motor to reduce its electromagnetic emission as one form of EMI mitigation strategy.

Dartbrook Coal is currently developing a modern, high production (3.5 Mtpy) single longwall retreat coal mine in the Upper Hunter Valley of NSW, Australia. The location is a green field site, with no surface or underground mining operations ever having taken place in the initial target seams. The coal seams of the working section, floor and immediate roof average a total 20 m in thickness and contain a mixed carbon dioxide 1 methane seam gas ranging from 6.5 to 11.0 m3/t. The target seams have undergone detailed characterisation to assess hazards and quantify the controls required to minimise associated risks during mining. Risks identified during initial phases of exploration and 14 months of development include: • High gas emission during development. • Probable high longwall gas emission rate. • Medium to high propensity to spontaneous combustion • Possible carbon dioxide outbursts on geological structures • The main controls currently in place include, • Mine geometry and ventilation circuits • Exploratory drilling ahead of development • Intensive in seam pre drainage • Goaf drainage plants • Comprehensive monitoring systems • Underground environmental management plan. • Pre mining predictions of gas emission provided an indication of gas emission rates which have proven to be an under estimate. Current mine issues are; • Both surface fans are at full capacity (250 m3/s 1.4 kPa) • Both gas drainage pumps are at full capacity (2.3 m3/s) • Alternatives to extensive in seam pre drainage being investigated (surface to in seam hydro fracture) Review of mine design underway This paper describes the seam characterisation, assessment of mining hazards and summary of the management plan developed to address the risks identified. A review of current mine underground environmental performance is also provided

INTRODUCTION This paper outlines the methods used to drill and pregrout prior to the excavation of five Mine Shafts in the Coal Measures of the Eastern United States. One example is the use of cement pregrouting of four 240 meter deep shafts and the second is the use of chemical pregrouting of a 360 meter deep shaft. These two examples will be compared and contrasted, both at the investigation stage of each project, and during the drilling and pregrouting itself, to illustrate the different approaches taken and how these affected the outcome, both technically and economically. INVESTIGATION FOR 240 METER SHAFTS In the case of the four 240 meter shafts, site investigation was carried out prior to bid, and information was made available by the Client in the form of a report. This report was based on pressure testing of NQ cored boreholes at each shaft site. Pressure testing was repeated two or more times, at each test setting, using 345 or 690 kPa of water pressure in accordance with the procedure outlined by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. Flow readings were taken every minute over a period of ten minutes. Maximum computed permeabilities, for the strata which accepted water under test for the shafts, carried between 1.0 x 10-6 m/s and 3.0 x 10-6 m/s, and total calculated seepages varied between 170' litres/minute to 3891 litres/minute. Although these figures did not indicate an excessive amount of seepage, the Client decided that pregrouting should be carried out, and chemical grouting was not discussed, even though the test permeabilities indicated the use of cement grout would be limited in this case.

Kidd Creek mine has recently completed upgrades of its primary ventilation systems enabling it to maintain a delivery of 1200 m3/s to continue mining ore zones extending to over 3000 m below surface. Following these upgrades the mine initiated a multi-stage review of their ventilation usage. The focus of these reviews, ranged from a brainstorming session of invited experts, through an evaluation of production plans to a detailed analysis of production data to determine if the ventilation system could be run more efficiently, thereby reducing the mine?s power consumption and associated operating costs. The initial review identified 1500 kW of installed fan power that could be eliminated from the primary ventilation system. The benefits of the subsequent analyses, so far, are not as measurable. The second and third analyses, respectively using long range production plan data and historic production data to determine ventilation requirements based upon diesel equipment, did not agree. Both were shown to have limitations, the future based analysis underestimating, and the historical analysis overestimating the requirements. Regardless of the failings of each method, important outcomes were achieved from the detailed analyses, namely, the ability for a mine to meet a forward analysis prediction of airflow depends on its ability to adjust the ventilation to meet the dynamic nature of the mining process. Also, to minimize total ventilation requirements, a mine must regularly redistribute its airflow; this not only reduces the total volume requirement but also increases the variability of the delivered flows which can provide further operational savings. Since the detailed analyses, the Kidd Creek mine has implemented a more frequent ventilation review and redistribution procedure; consequently, it now operates with an average delivery of 930 m3/s, which is 23% lower than in 2005 at the start of the review process.

INTRODUCTION During the past decade, significant pro¬gress has been made in applying rock mechanics principles to mine design problems by a great number of researchers. Some of these new techniques have found their way into the engineering and planning offices of the operating mine. In spite of these advances, however, the application of rock mechanics in the day-to-day mine planning and design of our domestic coal mines is rela¬tively rare. There are a number of reasons responsi¬ble for this relatively slow progress, not the least of which is the question of how to measure the success or cost effectiveness of a sizable rock mechanics effort in an opera¬ting mine. Firstly, the properties of geologic materials generally vary over a wide range and it is, therefore, difficult to assess whether an improvement in the mining conditions is due to a design change or due to a change in the geologic conditions. A second reason for the slow acceptance of rock mechanics in engineering thinking is the fact that some of the concepts are quite difficult and that physical evidence of their validity to mine design is still rare. Thirdly, com¬munication between research, engineering and applications oriented people appears to function only intermittently. In our view, however, the most important impediment lies in the "state-of-the-art." Exactly how much can rock mechanics help the mine operator? The best that rock mechanics can do at present is determine whether one approach is better than another when weighed against some design objective (stress, strain, deformation). We cannot determine the abso¬lute best ground control design -- only what is better. If ground control is lost, the statement that "it's the best one we looked at" means very little to the harried operator. While the "state-of-the art" has advanced a great deal, it has certainly not been reduced to an engineering matter in that design hand¬books are available -- they are not. The success of a rock mechanics program, there¬fore, can be determined only over a long period of time of continuous effort.

Heterogeneity and discontinuity significantly affect rockmass strength. Past studies have largely used arbitrary scaling approaches to produce rockmass strength from laboratory rock tests. This paper proposes a stochastic approach to produce rockmass strength from laboratory rock tests. Based on the laboratory data, MATLAB with an extreme value stochastic model generated a database for each physico-mechanical property of the rock. Then finite-difference software FLAC2D simulated laboratory-sized rock specimens. Random material properties in MATLAB were generated using the grids developed in the numerical model. The random properties were then applied to the final FLAC2D model. Model runs simulated the approach performed in the laboratory. The results from the model indicate that a stochastic approach produced compressive strengths that were lower than those from the deterministic approach. Failure modes for each specimen were different from those observed in the laboratory. In addition, random density also influenced the failure mode, highlighting the importance of stochastic analysis in rocks.

Introduction The cost of grinding may be divided into a fixed equipment cost portion and an operating cost portion. The fixed equipment cost is the amount of money required to purchase the grinding mill itself. This amount may be kept separate from the installation cost which, often, is taken as a percentage of the fixed equipment cost. A good average is 43%; therefore a $100,000 ball mill would cost approxi¬mately $143,000 installed. Operating costs are variable and paid per unit time for power, liner replacement, grinding charge replenishment, labor, and mainte¬nance including major parts replacement. Such costs depend on the geographical location and will vary with the cost of labor. Operating costs are difficult to estimate. Most mining companies consider such information proprietary. This section provides a means to obtain an estimate of the equip¬ment cost of a grinding mill with a rated accuracy of±l0%. Compara¬ble methods to determine operating costs are not available. Such costs are presented in table form with suggestions for updating them. Esti¬mating the cost of liners and steel replacement is possible as described in a later section. Capital Costs of Grinding Mills Grinding mill costs have been related,124 by means of equations and corresponding graphs, to the nominal horsepower requirements of mills. All graphs are based on a Marshall and Stevens cost index for Mining and Milling of 300, where a cost index is a ratio used to estimate current prices of equipment from obsolete prices. Where (Cost Index Now) Cost Now = (Cost Then) (Cost Index Then) (I) For example, the cost of an autogenous mill that requires a 3000¬hp motor is estimated as $500,000 (Fig. 95). This was the estimated price when the M&S (Marshall and Stevens, Mining and Milling) cost index had a value of 300. If the index is currently at 400, then the estimated current price of the autogenous mill is: Cost Now = ($500,000) (400) (300) = $667,000 Most professional journals will publish current values of cost indices at least once a month. In subsequent pages, each graph of grinding mill cost vs. mill horsepower has an associated graph of capacity vs. horsepower along with a table that relates mill size to horsepower. The associated graph and the table must be used with caution, since both apply to an average ore under average conditions. Example calculations showing how graphs should be used are shown in the following. It should be stressed that the cost data incorporated herein ex¬cludes the cost of pumps, motors, lines, and classifiers, unless other¬wise stated. Costs are not direct quotes; they are the averages of quotes supplied by manufacturers and analyzed by means of regression analysis. Example 1. INTRODUCTION Environmental impacts are most commonly associated with air and water pollution. Not- withstanding this fact, to many people the primary disruption caused by mineral extraction is the change in the character of the locale. That is, the environmental impact of mining includes, but is not limited to, the generation of residuals. The dramatic transformation of wilderness or rural land often creates strong reactions to mineral development. Thus, the basic issues of land use management are a useful addition to environmental discussion. In this section, we take up a discussion of federal, state, and local land use management regimes, along with a brief introduction to the potential role of economic analysis. Elsewhere in this volume, land management issues are discussed from other orientations, and the interested reader may wish to look there as well. Locatable Minerals on Federal Lands Legislation and Administration: Access to hard-rock minerals on the public lands is governed by the General Mining Law of 1872. This law declares that "valuable mineral deposits in land belonging to the United States . . . are hereby declared to be free and open to exploration and purchase . . . ." In order to initiate rights, prospectors are required to physically stake claims of specified sizes and shapes following basic procedures set by federal law which may be supplemented by the individual states. Rights to these claims are protected at the exploration stage so long as actual possession is maintained and diligent exploration activity is underway. If a valuable mineral deposit is discovered on the claim, the claimholder earns the exclusive right of possession as against private parties so long as the claim is properly maintained. To maintain this exclusive right the claimholder must per- form $100 worth of labor or improvements, known as assessment work, on each claim every year and make related annual filings with the U. S. Department of the Interior. If the existence of a valuable mineral deposit can be demonstrated, and other legal requirements are met, the claimholder may receive a patent giving full title to the claimed land, including the surface in most cases. The purchase price is either $2.50 or $5 .OO per acre. The Mining Law has remained largely un- changed by legislative amendment during its now more than 100-vear existence. However, while the law itself has not changed, its interpretation and administration have changed considerably. Written at a time of rapid western expansion of the U.S. following the Civil War, the intent of the law was to promote mineral development by inviting unrestricted prospecting and by selling the lands containing mineral deposits at a minimal charge. As federal land policy shifted from one of rapid disposal into private ownership to one of retention and management for a number of uses, mineral patenting requirements have been administered more strictly. The most critical issue concerns what must be demonstrated to establish the existence of a valuable mineral deposit. The so-called "prudent man" standard was established in the case of Castle v. Womble (19 L.D. 455 (1894)):

The economics of a mineral-processing circuit is dependent on the numerous sensors that are critical to optimization and control systems. When a sensor goes off calibration, it results in errors that can have a severe impact on plant economics. Classical statistical approaches fail to detect when errors are “subtle,” unless they grow and become large enough to be “gross,” whereas methods based on signal processing and artificial intelligence fail in dealing with the complexity of process fluctuations. Due to the sheer volume of sensors, undetected errors are not remedied until the next calibration, which on average are a year apart across all industries [1]. This research aims to detect such subtle errors (2 percent bias) in shorter time spans of about a month — rather than wait for errors to grow — using innovative data-mining techniques and algorithms.

In 1988 a major exploration program was undertaken to determine the characteristics of the rock and soil for a 7.6 m diameter sea outfall tunnel beneath Boston Harbor out into Massachusetts Bay. The diffuser discharge location had been mandated by the EPA to a 10 sq. km area of seafloor connected to the proposed Deer Island Treatment Facility by a 14.5 km tunnel corridor. Geophysical surveys, deep rock borings, and laboratory testing, provided the information for the conceptual design. The program identified the range in material types and parameters to prove feasibility of a TBM driven tunnel and to locate the optimum alignment and depth.

To obtain a reliable comparison between conical and cylindrical separatory vessels used in dynamic dense medium separation systems, the following studies were made: (1) study of the swirling flow in conical and cylindrical vessels using laser-Doppler velocimetry (LDV); (2) study of the behaviour of suspensions of magnetite and ferrosilicon in water in both separators. It was found that: (a) the tangential velocity profiles differ in conical and cylindrical vessels: in a conical cyclone free vortex conditions affect the largest part of the vessel, while in a cylindrical vessel, the motion approaches that of a forced vortex, i.e. that of a centrifuge; (b) the conical vessel manifests higher centrifugal acceleration and very strong densifying; the density differential, and hence the density gradient inside the vessel is large; (c) the cylindrical vessel manifests lower centrifugal acceleration and low densifying, i.e. low density differentials, and hence, the density gradient inside the vessel is small; (c) due to greater densifying, the density cut-point in cyclones is higher than the operating medium density, while in cylindrical vessels the density cut-point is closer to the medium density. The results provide an interesting description of the differing behaviour of conical and cylindrical vessels and help explain the differences in performance between the two types of separators.

In order to control and dispatch the sewage water coming from 3 tunnels toward 2 downstream sewage tunnels, a large cavern has been excavated in a suburb of PARIS. Located at a depth of 47,00 m, it has been excavated using the NATM procedure through swelling clay, weathered sandstone, and marl and chalk. It is 16,50 m high, 12,40 m wide and 60, 00 m long, with an elliptical cross-section and its two ends are egg-shapped. The final lining of the cavern is composed of 30 to 40 cm of shotcrete, steel ribs and passive anchor bars. The excavation stages and related movements were surveyed by extensometers, pressure cells and convergence devices. The design, method of construction of the cavern and the results of the measurements made are commented.

The choice between EPB - and Slurry Shields is influenced by the following factors: grain size distribution, cohesiveness, occurence of boulders, occurence of gas, feasibility of soil separation and muck disposal, and settlement properties of the soil. The simple equation cohesive soils = EPB Shields and non cohesive soils = Slurry Shield is very often superimposed by other facts. For example, the occurence of a large amount of boulders in weak cohesive soils, where the application of roller discs is not recommendable, may lead to the use of a Slurry Shield with a rock crusher, thus accepting the disadvantage of a sophisticated separation plant; whereas the occurence of contaminated groundwater or gas may exclude the use of a Slurry Shield. In the following examples the choice of a Slurry Shield or EPBS will be explained and justified with regard of the above factors.

This paper considers various techniques available for the measurement of blast damage, making particular reference to recent underground hardrock mine studies. This paper concludes by indicating the importance of understanding and accounting for geology and emphasizes the need for a robust damage-audit procedure.
