As the existing major U.S. - Canada rail tunnel was too small to accommodate double-stack container cars, Canadian National Railways is constructing a new parallel tunnel with a 50% greater diameter. Starting in Sarnia, Ontario, the new shallow-cover bored tunnel runs under a large research building and several other structures in an oil refinery before travelling under the St. Clair River. Maximum predicted settlements to be caused by the 9.2 meter diameter earth pressure balance TBM in the soft St. Clair till were in excess of 100 millimeters. As such, these settlements had the potential to cause severe damage and disruption to the existing refinery. In order to reinforce the soft clays below the refinery research building and other structures, and to compensate for settlement caused by the tunnelling, the ground improvement method of Soil Fracture grouting was successfully applied for the first time in North America. This paper will describe the details of both the soil fracture grouting application and the elaborate electrolevel remote monitoring system used.

In another situation, Dave Zegeer, the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health, whom all of you know very well, would have taken the opportunity to talk with you. In his absence, however, I would like to reference some of his recent comments which may help us to see the issue of mine safety in historical perspective. Dave pointed out that this year is the eightieth anniversary of the Great Earthquake and Fire of San Francisco. The whole world heard about that disaster--it and the 452 people who died in it. In that same year, nearly five times as many people died in coal mines, but no one particularly noticed.

Critical mineral endowment of mine wastes in two mining districts in New Mexico (Copper Flat at Hillsboro and Carlisle-Center mines in the Steeple Rock district) will be characterized and estimated. “Beta-testing” of USGS procedures was performed. Potential critical minerals at these deposits include As, Bi, Te, Zn, Co, Ni, Mg, Mn, and fluorite. pH and particle size of samples were analyzed to determine weathering and migration potential of heavy metals. Soil pH was also measured to determine the potential for Acid Rock Drainage. The pH of the waste rock piles ranged from 3.66 to 5.67 which indicates fine- grained pyrite or sulfide oxidation. The samples collected from the tailings however, showed a different range of pH, from 6.30 to 8.62, probably due to the presence of carbonates. Difference in particle size fractions and its distribution along the slope are generally influenced by natural occurrences (e.g., gravity and pre-mining hydrothermal alteration) and operational activities such as material piling or dumping. Future work includes analyses of mineralogy and particle size correlation and estimation of critical mineral endowment of these mine wastes at New Mexico.

The Minera Ojos Del Salado (MINOSAL) concentrator is located 20 km (12 miles) southeast of Copiapo, Chile. It processes copper ore provided by its Santos and Resguardo mines at a capacity of 4.2 kt/d (4620 stpd). In 1982, Phelps Dodge acquired the majority interest in MINOSAL to explore the property's potential. At that time, the concentrator plant was a small, antiquated installation with a capacity of 674 t/d (740 stpd). At the time of the pur¬chase, the majority of the ore was produced from the Santos and Resguardo mines, but custom ores of copper, silver and gold were also treated. The acquisition occurred at a crucial time in the copper business, since the price had fallen to nearly 50 cents/ lb. In 1985, Phelps Dodge purchased the outstanding interest in MINOSAL and acquired 100% of the property. Today, after numerous improvements and two expansions, the concentrator is a combination of old and new equipment. The regrind mills, for example, have been in service for about 50 years, while the ceramic concentrate filter represents the latest technology.

The first cement plant of TITAN Cement Co was founded in Elefsis in 1902. It was the first cement industrial facility to operate in the Balkans and in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Currently have four cement plants in Greece producing 5.4 million tons per annum, and 25 ready-mixed concrete sites producing 1.4 million m3 annually. It has a total of 20 quarries, 14 of which are producing materials used in the making of cement while the remaining six produce aggregates used in the production of ready-mixed concrete. All plants in Greece are accredited for ISO 14001. The restoration of quarries began in 1976 at the company?s limestone quarry of the Patras plant, and was soon extended to all quarries. At that time, a department responsible for all environmental issues was established. To date, over 700.000 shrubs and trees have been planted and maintained at quarries, plants and ready-mixed concrete facilities, while over 100,000 trees have been donated to municipalities, communities, customers and to the Greek state.

Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority Section E8a consists principally of twin tunnels 1,713 meters (5,620 ft) long, excavated to a diameter of 6.35 meters (20.83 ft) using an open face shield, with a primary lining of four unbolted precast concrete segments expanded at the crown, and a full circle unreinforced concrete final lining with a finished tunnel diameter of 5.08 meters (16.67 ft). The tunnels, constructed in Cretaceous age sediments, are mostly in stiff to hard clay except for a few areas along the alignment that contain dense to very dense fine sand in the upper portion of the tunnel that created a mixed face condition. At two locations unexpected heavy water inflows produced very serious problems in both tunnels. Water flows in the interface area were generally more than 378.5 1pm (100 gpm) and reached as high as 2,649.5 1pm (700 gpm) in the mixed face ground. The nature of the tunnel inflows, the consequences, and the corrective measures adopted will be the subject of this paper.

Investigations show that injuries and fatalities in mining workplaces in developing countries are increasing. In Turkey, the number of workers killed in occupational accidents in the Zonguldak Hard Coal production region per 100,000 tons of coal production is 2.83 in the private sector and 2.03 in the public sector. For this reason, it is important to conduct risk analyses in terms of occupational health and safety and to implement measures quickly. Risks are evaluated with reactive and proactive approaches. Because hazards and events are often unpredictable in high-risk areas such as coal mining, it is not practical or meaningful to plan proactively in advance for every possible situation underground, especially psychosocial risks. However, it is important to develop protective strategies and measures for unexpected events or to take a reactive approach to prevent future incidents or accidents and to identify psychosocial risks. Therefore, reactive risk assessments based on the tactics and strategies of criminology can be conducted and spatiotemporal geographic information system (GIS) techniques can be utilized, enabling managers in mining workplaces to correct assessments.

The ball mill grinding circuit has widespread application in mining, metallurgy, chemistry, pharmacy and research. It faces some challenges because a grinding circuit is a multivariable system in which high interaction between loops, variation of system parameters with time, and time delays are problems. In this study, a fuzzy logic self-tuning proportional–integral–derivative (FLST-PID) controller based on an improved disturbance observer is designed for control of ball mill grinding circuits. It is combined with an improved disturbance observer (IDOB) to eliminate system interaction, attenuate internal and external disturbances and compensate the effect of system uncertainty on the performance of the ball mill grinding circuit.

Introduction Advances in drilling have reached a point where large diameter cores can be recovered from "tight," or weakly indurated placer gravels. In such ground, core drilling can provide more reliable data regarding tenor than can be obtained using churn drilling or similar classical techniques. It can also provide metallurgical and geological information that is not available from samples obtained through alternate methods. In 1985, Coastal Mining Co, a subsidiary of M. A. Hanna, and Western Gold Reserves began to review a Tertiary placer deposit owned by San Juan Gold at North Columbia, CA, about 14 km (9 miles) northeast of Grass Valley. The deposit is one of the largest remaining unmined portions of the formerly extensive early Tertiary ancestral Yuba river system. It has been known since the 1850s, has been the subject of much technical literature, and has been the object of at least four previous drilling programs. The eastern one-third of the 6 km (3.7 mile) stretch of the channel between North Columbia and Badger Hill was partially stripped by large scale hydraulic mining in the late 1870s and early 1880s. Mining ceased in 1884 when the Sawyer Decision prohibited further discharge of hydraulic tailings into the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers. By that time, about 30 to 45 m (100 to 150 ft) of relatively low grade upper gravels had been removed over some 81 hm2 (200 acres). About 90 to 105 m (300 to 350 ft) of higher grade middle and lower gravels were left at least partially stripped. In 1914, a few churn holes were drilled along a widely-spaced line. In 1938-1939, Selection Trust conducted an extensive drilling campaign to evaluate the deposit. Particular attention was directed toward the partially stripped eastern portion. In 1968, the US Geological Survey drilled three churn holes in the eastern part of the deposit. The US Bureau of Mines conducted experimental mining and drilling in the Badger Hill area. In the late 1970s, Placer Service Corp. acquired a lease on the deposit. Between 1979 and 1984, Placer Service drilled 28 large diameter BADE (a German-manufactured machine) drill holes on the eastern portion of the deposit. The surviving records from the widely-spaced 1914 drilling program are fragmentary and the reported grade not well substantiated. The 1968 holes were drilled for scientific purposes. Again, drilling details are not available. However, detailed records for both the churn drilling program and the BADE program were available and formed the basis for the initial evaluation of the property. Geology The geology of the auriferous Tertiary gravels of California have been described by Whitney (1880), Lingren (1911), and, more recently, Yeend (1974). In general, the Tertiary gravels in the North Columbia area occupy a broad channel cut into pre-Tertiary igneous and metamorphic rocks. The upper, or white gravel is overlain conformably by volcanic tuffs and volcaniclastic rocks. A middle gravel is characterized by the presence of silicified and carbonized wood. A lower blue gravel unit has relatively coarser cobbles and contains a higher proportion of igneous and metamorphic cobbles than the other units. The upper gravel consists of interbedded pebbly sand and silty, or clayey sands with prominent cross bedding. Most of the pebbles are well rounded and consist mostly of white vein quartz and quartzite. The upper unit is moderately well compacted. Exposures in the walls of the old hydraulic mine pits stand at 45° and 50° angles. The gold content of the unit is well below an economic cutoff. The middle gravel - included with the upper unit by Yeend (1974) - is coarser grained, with carbonized wood, and 75 to 100 mm (3 to 4 in.) cobbles of metased-imentary and metavolcanic rocks in a sandy matrix containing abundant lithic fragments. The upper contact appears to be conformable, but the lower portion of the unit appears in places to consist of reworked lower gravels. The unit contains less clay than the upper unit and is somewhat more friable than the underlying lower gravels. The gold content, while somewhat higher than the upper level, is too low to be of ore grade. The lower gravel averages between 30 to 45 m (100 to 150 ft)

Composition of salt in the Permian Flowerpot Shale in northwest Oklahoma suggests that the salt in this formation was deposited in the early phase of solar evaporation. Brine produced through natural dissolution of the subsurface salt has netted very pure brines, with relatively low concentrations of magnesium salts that should result from late-stage precipitation of salt deposits from sea water. Over the last 100 years, extensive studies of sea- water evaporites, in relation to brine density, have been a topic of discussion. The development of evaporation models has facilitated the increased production and purity of solar salt (salt produced through evaporation of brine by the sun's energy). Conversely, this information can be utilized to gain an understanding of how rock-salt formations were precipitated from sea water by analyzing the elemental constituents of the rock salt and of the resulting brine. By evaluation of well-documented, phase-curve tables of sea-water evaporation, a basic theory can be formulated on how the Flowerpot salt unit was formed.

Separation of rare earth, especially Nd and Sm, was investigated by batch and column methods with a solvent impregnated resin. The solvent impregnated resin was prepared by impregnation of organo- phosphorous extractant whose trade name was PC-88A into a macro porous resin. The adsorption behavior of rare earth with a solvent impregnated resin in a batch method is the same as that with solvent extraction. In a column method to separate Nd and Sm, the effective separation in both adsorption and elution processes can be attained by setting suitable conditions, such as bed height, flow rate and concentration of eluent. Neodymium which is a lighter rare earth is separated from Sm an adsorption step, while Sm in which is a heavier rare earth is recovered in an elution step. From the integration of breakthrough and elution curves, yield of Nd and Sm is calculated in the condition of 100% purity. It was found from the results of life test of the resin that the solvent impregnated resin can be repeatedly utilized at least 20 times.

Ferromanganese slag, a product of the manganese industry, was characterized mineralogically. The slag, which contains high Mn values, was characterized using optical microscopy, XRD analysis and electron microscopy. No separate Mn-bearing oxide mineral phase was found. The slag is amorphous, and no crystalline phase was identified in the hulk sample by XRD, However, in. fine fractions, quartz was identified. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the presence of Mn, Si, Al and Ca in the matrix without the development of a mineral phase. Leaching experiments using H2SO4 were carried out to determine if Mn could be extracted from the slag. At room temperature, almost 100% of the manganese could be dissolved at a solid-liquid ratio o f 1:10 by leaching with dilute sulfuric acid. The impurities could be precipitated by pH adjustment to produce a manganese sulfate solution suitable for the production of MnO2 or electrolytic Mn metal. Based on the laboratory-scale experiments, a suitable process is proposed to recover manganese values from the, ferromanganese slag.

The availability of concentrated brines rich iodide, bromide, chloride, sodium, magnesium and calcium ions has led to extensive chemical manufacturing operations in Michigan. The brines, ranging 1,000 to 8,000 feet below the earth's surface, are the remnants of ancient oceans which periodically covered and receded over the land area which is now Michigan. After pumping the brine to the surface, iodine and bromine are extracted via an oxidative process. Iodine and bromine find application in catalysts, disinfectants, flame retardants, oil field fluids, film, and gasoline additives. Addition of alkalinity to the brine precipitates magnesium hydroxide, used in high quality refractories needed for steel manufacture. The brines are also the country's primary source of calcium chloride, employed in ice and dust control.

Introduction The feeding to zero concept involves feeding 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) size raw coal to heavy media (magnetite) cyclones along with the +600 µm (+28 mesh) size coal. Traditional circuits employ desliming or removing the 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) size fraction and feeding the cyclones +600 µm (+28 mesh) size coal. The feeding to zero concept recirculates 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) fines in the circuit. At the same time, a portion of the fine material is continuously withdrawn and recovered. This, in turn, prevents a fines buildup. This concept eliminates desliming screens and secondary fines circuitry for recovery of 600 x 150 µm (28 mesh x 100 mesh) coal. The result is a very simple circuit. Feeding to zero at Island Creek Island Creek Corp. was the first involved with the new concept in 1976. The company needed a temporary plant for the 9.5 mm x 0 (0.4 in. x 0) raw coal at its Pond Fork mine, near Madison, WV, while a full-scale plant was being designed and built. At that time, the Childress Corp., of Beckley, WV, became interested in the feeding to zero concept. Island Creek awarded a contract to Childress to build a single cyclone modular plant, incorporating this feeding to zero concept. The plant was erected in three months. The Pond Fork modular plant proved successful in attaining the desired feed rate of about 63.5 t/h (70 stph), while maintaining good separating efficiencies and low magnetite consumption rates. The 9.5 mm x 150 µm (0.4 in. x 100 mesh) clean coal was recovered and the 150 µm x 0 (100 mesh x 0) size was disposed of to waste. The full-scale plant was completed about two years later and the Pond Fork modular plant was moved to Holden, WV. There, it was incorporated into the Holden 29 preparation plant as a separate circuit for cleaning -25 mm (-1 in.) coal. In 1976, a similar plant was installed in Virginia by another company. These two plants are believed to be the first two operational plants in the United States incorporating the feeding to zero concept. Island Creek subsequently contracted with Childress for an identical plant at the Coal Mountain operation in West Virginia. The plant operated for three years before the mine was closed. The unit was then moved to the Spurlock mine near Martin, KY where it continues to operate. The successful operation of the Pond Fork and Coal Mountain plants before and after relocation proved both the performance and moveability of this type of circuit when constructed in a modular fashion. Since the first two plants were built, Island Creek has incorporated the feeding to zero circuit in nine additional plants. A grand total of 33 cyclones have been installed using this concept. One is the Providence mine, near Providence. Providence preparation plant Island Creek contracted with J.O. Lively Corp. of Glen White, WV in July 1978 for the construction of the Providence preparation plant. The plant began operation in February 1979. The construction period was about halved by building the plant with modular design concepts. Prefabricated sections, floors, and sides were brought in as units and then bolted in place. The Providence plant has a good track record of processing coal at a feed rate of 454 kt/h (500 stph). Feed coal to the plant has an average ash content of about 18% and sulfur content of about 4.5%. It contains about 22% refuse. The coal product has an average ash content of about 8% and sulfur content is about 3%. Raw West Kentucky No. 9 seam coal is conveyed from a box cut in the Providence mine to a rotary breaker. The breaker is fitted with 74 mm-diam (3 in.-diam) opening breaker plates. Therefore, it is well suited for removing trash, roof bolts, wood, and pyritic balls that are common in Illinois Basin coal. The -75 mm (-3 in.) coal is conveyed from the rotary breaker to

An air-pulsated jig has been widely adopted as a main coal washer. It may be mainly because of its many technical and economic features such as large capacity, low running cost, long life, etc. However, the recent increasing demand of fuel coal requires a higher productivity and efficiency of the air-pulsated jig. To fill this requirement theoretical and experimental investigations have been conducted on model and practical jigs in Japan. This paper generalizes the results of these investigations. In jig operation it is essentially of the most importance to create efficiently the pulsation of the water best suited for coal washing. The optimum pulsation should be determined by the theory of jigging process, and the method to realize it by that of pulsating mechanism.

INTRODUCTION The effect of stress concentration in coal seams leads to a sudden release in the form of rock bursts. This effect is controlled along many lines, but the most efficient methods consist in preventing the accumulation of energy in the seam or in the roof. The over- burden weight resulting from mining is the main cause of excessive stresses in a seam. An additional weighting of roof takes place due to formation of abutment loads. The accumulation of energy in the roof takes place where thick sandstone beds occur in overburden strata. An essential problem is to watch, with appropriate measurements, the stress of coal and roof rocks, and to conclude, on this basis, the degree of rock burst hazard. The methods for determining the stresses in a coal seam are quite well developed at present. Let me mention here the seismoacoustic methods, or borehole overcoring measurement methods. On the other hand, an examination of the state of stress in the roof rocks is almost impossible at the actual stage of development of the measuring technique. Hence, the model of stresses in roof was analyzed and determined theoretically. Based on this model, a technology for roof fracturing was developed which aims at destressing rock masses in a planned way. The essentials of the fracturing method consist of a controlled breaking of sandstone roof beds in order to: - prevent the excessive weight on the pillar - prevent a spontaneous breaking of roof beds at a limiting state followed by sudden energy release. High pressure fluid infusion is used to release buildup of stresses. THEORETICAL AND RESEARCH BASES According to the tests carried out by A. Kidybinski by the method of finite elements, isobars of stresses occurring in the roof over the working face are shown in [Fig. 1]. The results indicate: - the highest values of compressive stresses occur in the roof directly over the seam, at a distance of about 5 m ahead of the working face - at a distance of about 22 m above the seam there is a line of transition of compressive stresses into tensile - within the tested roof area, the highest tensile stresses occur at a vertical distance of 35 m, and at a horizontal distance of 20 m from the line of the working face. H. Gil (1) determined the pres- sure initiating the fracture of roof rocks by the formula: [ ] On the basis of results of analysis of isobars, and of the initiation of failure stress formula (1), isobars may be designed for a given roof class. Assuming for sandstones the Poisson ratio equal 0.3, a field of failure stresses presented in [Fig. 2] is obtained. In this figure it can be seen in which areas the effects of sandstone breakage may be obtained with the operation of a determined hydraulic pressure. To use formula (I), the knowledge of Rr is still necessary. This value may be determined in two ways: - taking a sample and testing it in the laboratory, if there is access to roof rocks in the existing openings, - drilling boreholes in the roof from surface and examination of the rock mass by using hydraulic breaking, if there is no access to roof rocks.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the possible application of two relatively new technologies: flat load cells, and improvement seeking computer programs (referred to in the literature as heuristic programs); to a very old problem, inventors control of ball mills. The combination of these two technologies seems most applicable to grate discharge mills operated closed circuit. It is possible that other applications such as controlling the inventory of autogeneous mills might also be found. Direct control of ball mill inventory has been the goal of a number of investigators over many years. Many patents and articles on the subject have claimed success, but operating installations are hard to locate. An excellent review of the advantages and problems of direct inventory control is contained in an article by Oswald and Ziegler (1). Figure 1 is a conventional representation of throughput vs. inventory with other factors such as slurry consistency and rock twee held constant. There are common sense, physical arguments? and experimental evidence supporting the existence of a unimodel curve of this twee? though direct measurement of the shape is difficult and how it moves as rock type changes is riot well known. Figure 2 represents the problem faced by all mass measurements of inventory, a tare weight of about 25 time the inventory mass. "Coal, iron and manganese ore samples were exposed to different ultrasonic intensities of 250, 300 and 350 W/L for five minutes and to an ultrosonic intensity of 270 W/L for different time durations of 3, 5 and 7 minutes. The ultrasonically treated samples showed reductions in D80 particle diameters of 6 percent for the coal samples, 5.95 percent for the iron ore samples and 35.63 percent for the manganese ore samples during grinding. The ultrasonic treatment was also observed to assist in reducing ash content in the coal product by 8 percent and to reduce manganese losses in rejects by about 5 percent. Ultrasonic treatment was concluded to be capable of assisting in the comminution of friable ores more prominently than the hard and porous materials.IntroductionComminution is an important unit operation in the mineral-processing, cement-making, powergeneration and pharmaceutical industries. But most of the milling technologies are considered to be energy inefficient, with less energy consumed in real size reduction and most of the energy consumed in the machine. This is more critical for the mineralprocessing industry because of the growing need to exploit lower-grade ore bodies and process rejects (Blazy et al., 1994; U.S. Department of Energy, 2005). Low-grade ores require crushing and grinding to liberate the valuable minerals, which are further separated from gangues by various beneficiation methods such as gravity separation, flotation and leaching. Various studies have been carried out to minimize energy consumption during milling by developing pretreatment methods that can initiate new fractures or improve the fracture density in materials before comminution. These studies were mainly focused on chemical additives; thermal, ultrasonic and microwave treatments; and electric disintegration (Klimpel and Austin, 1982; Norgate and Weller, 1994; Bearman, Briggs and Kojovic, 1997; Gaete-Garreton, Vargas-Hermandez and Velasquez-Lambert, 2000; Kumar et al., 2010; Wang, Shi and Manlapig., 2011, Singh et al., 2012).The fragmentation effect of ultrasonic fields in solids has been investigated since the 1950s, and Gärtner was probably the first researcher who attempted it (Gaete-Garreton, Vargas- Hermandez and Velasquez-Lambert, 2000). Sound waves can propagate in solids in the form of longitudinal waves, shear waves and surface waves, and in thin materials as plate waves.In surfaces, fractures and interfaces, various types of elliptical or complex vibrations of the particles make other waves possible. During ultrasonic-vibration treatment, cavitation bubbles nucleate, grow and collapse, generating microjets, whose impacts on the particles initiate microcracks. The ultrasonic waves can enhance the nucleation, growth and coalescence of flaws, caused by tensile or shear stress. The mechanisms operating in the materials and inducing these stresses have been identified as spall and compression-induced tensile microcracks, nucleating at preexisting flaws. These mechanisms are driven by the shock wave and cavitation effects in the surrounding fluid (Chen, Huang and Shih, 2003)"

The training program developed at Sierrita over the last twelve months has led to several significant improvements in both safety performance and productivity. Our most easily quantified results have been in truck productivity, where we have also experienced a 6% decrease in truck cycle times. We feel this is due to increased skill levels and awareness on the part of our operators due to our new training effort. The cycle time improvement has resulted in an increase in Truck productivity of 6%. Costs associated with productivity training have been $160,300. This includes program development and execution costs, as well as lost productivity during the training itself. Mineral exploration involves the selective collection, organization, evaluation, and interpretation of geologic and economic data. The sources for such data are original field observations and existing documented information of various types (publications, reports, maps, company files, etc.). As exploration data are accumulated, their storage, organization, indexing, and J retrieval is key to exploration progress. Initial use of computers by mineral exploration groups indicates that data can be meaningfully handled by machines. A computer system makes possible: 1) the storage, manipulation, collation, and selective retrieval of data; 2) the utilization of data banks developed by geologic service groups and available at relatively low cost; and 3) the retrieval of stored data more rapidly, completely, and effectively than by manual systems. Profitable utilization of these capabilities is conditioned by several factors, particularly by the information selected for the system data base and by the design of the computer system itself.
