This paper deals with the causes and mechanisms of a massive pillar failure in a room-and-pillar mine. The mine employed a nine-entry panel system using supersection technique under a cover ranging from 91 to 168 m (300 to 550 ft). Chain pillar squeeze and large roof-to-floor convergence were first observed at the belt transfer point on the very inby side of the main entries. It propagated out by quickly, and, within 24 hours, it had covered an area approximately 1,250-m- (4,100 ft-) long by 762-m- (2,500-ft-) wide. The failure was caught and stopped by a solid barrier pillar. Using computer modeling, this study indicates that the massive failure was initiated because of a combination of undersized chain pillars in some panels and weak immediate floor. Also, the study shows that the massive pillar failure expanded to a large area because of the absence of barrier pillars between some panels and between mains and panels. Based on computer modeling, alternative mine plans were proposed to avoid such problems.

A microcomputer controlled data acquisition system has been developed for automatic monitoring of underground instrumentation from a remote location. The system has been used extensively by Spokane Research Center personnel for monitoring rock instrumentation in shafts, drifts, and stopes in hardrock and coal mines, especially where instrument access is limited. Ruggedness was a major consideration in designing the underground portion of the system and it has performed satisfactorily under extreme environmental conditions, including temperatures to 1100 F, 100% humidity, and falling water. The major advantage of the system is that it multiplexes the data from 16 channels through a single twisted pair cable to the receiver, significantly reducing cabling requirements. This receiving station can be as far as 8,000 ft from the instruments without the addition of line drivers. The receiver maintains a data buffer with the latest scans, which is periodical 1 y accessed by a micro- computer, either locally or through a modem, that automatically records and reduces the data. Utilities allow on-site plotting of data and uploading of data to mainframe computers.

High-calcium limestones occur in the upper part of the New Market Formation, of Lower Middle Ordovician age, in Franklin and Cumberland Counties, Pennsylvania. The high-calcium facies of the New Market Formation is represented by sublithographic limestone or vaughanite, which probably formed in quiet water; low-energy environments such as intershoal lagoons, or in protected bays similar to the present-day Florida Bay environment. Rapid facies changes are characteristic of the strata. The better grade of stone lies in the upper 100 to 125 feet of the New Market Formation and averages 95-97% calcium carbonate. Silica and magnesia are about equal in amount as impurities. One high-calcium belt extends from the Maryland state line through Chambersburg and Newville to beyond Carlisle. The strata in this belt are structurally complex, which requires careful field study' and core-drilling prior to exploitation. Stone suitable for blast-furnace flux is present in relatively large amounts, but stone for open-hearth use or portland cement requires more selective quarrying.

At the RETC 1979 in Atlanta/Georgia it was reported about the beginnings of the Hydroshield system and the first site experiences. Since that time over 10 miles of tunnels in various diameters have been built with that system, and the discussion of the two most interesting projects will be the main topics of this paper. AURELIA TUNNEL, ROME In Rome, the railway system is going to be completed and modernized. Therefore, it is necessary to tunnel through the Roman hills. Part of the new railway system is the Aurelia Tunnel, located some 100 feet below the famous Via Aurelia Antigua, close to the Vatican. The double track railway tunnel has an internal diameter of 9.44 m and a length of 2.410 m. It runs through completely differing soil conditions. (Fig. 1) The first 1000 t are situated in watertight clay, the rear part in water bearing loamy, clayey sands with interlayers of loamy clays. The figure shows the soft change-over from clay to sand. On longwall coal faces in some Japanese coal mines more than half of the air coming from the intake gate road flows into the caved goaf and the air heated by the hot waste rocks in the goaf comes out through the latter half of the face. This still constitutes a major heat problem in spite of the introduction of gate and face air coolers. Therefore, in order to establish effective measures to improve the environ- mental conditions, it is essential to obtain information pertaining to the air flow pattern on the face as affected by the goaf conditions and the air flow regulating measures taken at the intake side of the face. Experiments for this purpose were carried out using a coal face model. The model was reduced to a scale of 1110th of the real face measuring 100 m long and 2.2 m high, equipped with self-advancing supports. The model design was also conceived to accomodate eventual modifications of the space of the caved goaf as imposed by the actual conditions.

The development of a design equation for, and the testing of, a constant- flow airlift pump IS described. The predictions of the new airlift model agree with the results of experiments carried out using riser diameters between 0.025 and 0.300 m, submergence depths between 5 and 10 m, suspension densities between 1000 and 1650 kg/m3, and a solids dg of 70 to 100µm. The predictions o the model also agree with data from the literature for submergence depths that reached 130 m. This airlift model was employed to simulate the pulp flow through a series of tanks, each of which was fitted with an airlift pump to transfer the suspension to the next tank. Particular attention was paid to the riser diameter, submergence of the airlift pump, and control of the air supply to the airlift pump during the simulated operation of a series of tanks. The results of the simulation highlight some design parameters that could affect the efficiency and operation of a plant that employs airlift pumps to transfer suspensions.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Lucky Friday mine is located in Mullan, Sho-¬shone County, Idaho. The mining method is horizontal slice cut-and-fill (with timbering for support or un¬timbered) using hydraulic sand. Cemented sand fill at a 1:17 ratio is used in sill pours and at a 1:7 ratio for the final 152 mm (6 in.) capping in successive stope floor pours. Annual production with 100% cut-and-fill mining is 167 829 t (185,000 st). The average depth of mining is 1296 m (4250 ft) and the average travel time to the stope is 45 min. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size The ore body is 396 to 488 m (1300 to 1600 ft) long on strike, 1421 m (4660 ft) on dip, with an average width of 2.3 m (7.5 ft). Dip varies from vertical to1.2 rad (70°) Ground Conditions, Ore Value, and Production Requirements The ore body contains quite strong argentiferous galena and quartz. The hanging wall and footwall are strongly sheared and fractured. Ore value is $211/t ($192/st).

Kushk lead-zinc mine is located in central part of IRAN. The mine is owned by Bafgh Mines Co., which is a nationalized company. Exploration results show that ore occurs in the area that extends for 800m length and 180m depth. The approved, probable and possible reserves of the mine is 900,000 tons, 1,120,000, tons and 1,450,000 tons respectively with average grade of 17.7% zinc and 4.3% lead. The total annual output of the mine all was by underground mining, is in the order of 100. 000 tons. The main entry to the mine is via an inclined shaft with a cross-sectional arp of 8 m2, length of 263m which dips at 20°. The ore is mined mostly by sublevel stopinq method. The major difficulty in ventilating the mine was that related to spontaneous combustion of pyrite, which was more serious in some parts of the mine than others. In order to reduce this risk, a new ventilation system for the mine was designed, using 4 exhusting fans.

A new super-large 100 m3 (3500 ft3) pneumatic mechanical flotation cell is now available to meet today's mineral processing challenges. Several innovative design concepts represent a marked departure from conventional flotation cell designs. The radial discharge from the pump action rotor and the overhung vane type stator is contained in a conical bottom round tank with no dead comers. Peripheral launders collect froth overflowing the entire circumference of the tank and these launders are of a hexagonal design permitting cells to be nested together in a honeycomb fashion. The mechanism drive is either a customized right angle gear reducer or a conventional Vee belt drive. Both drive systems are available with an optional variable frequency control system that permits infinite speed adjustment of the rotor in each flotation cell or group of cells. Results of side-by-side comparative testing between three major manufacturers of super-large pneumatic mechanical flotation cells are discussed. These results were obtained at a large copper concentrator in Chile during several weeks of commercial scale testing.

A technique is presented for the economic selection of a slurry pipeline with the aid of a computer. Mathematical models for the flows of homogeneous slurries are utilized. Only the pipeline and its prime movers are considered. Slurry flow properties are first obtained from rheology and/or pipeline data measurements. A rheological model is then selected for the slurry. It must be emphasized that the accuracy of the method is greatly affected by the accuracy of the slurry flow-property data. Approximate cost parameters may be selected from data for plain and lined pipes, centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, motors and engines. Cost data for the purchase, operation and maintenance of slurry pipelines are also described. A total cost equation for the ownership and operation of a slurry pipeline system is then established. The complexity of the equation is a function of the rheological model selected to describe the slurry. The equation is solved with the aid of a computer for several combinations of pipeline diameters and throughputs to yield minimum total annual cost for the system. A mean velocity is then computed to give the required throughput. The velocity is constrained by an upper and lower bound. A high velocity is undesirable from an energy consumption viewpoint and if pipeline wear is possible. On the other hand, the velocity must exceed the deposition velocity for a heterogeneous suspension or the critical velocity for a homogeneous suspension. There is no guarantee that the velocity developed by this method will lie within the constraints applied, nor that the constraints are even known. This is particularly true for heterogeneous slurries. An important feature of the method is the ease with which the variables can be adjusted to measure the sensitivity of the total cost to the variables. The purpose of the sensitivity analysis is to identify those critical variables that. if changed, can considerably affect the total cost. Mathematically, individual variables are changed and the effect of such a change on the annual total cost is computed. But from a designer's point of view, individual components in the system are changed to study their effect on the annual total cost. A change in one component of the system may involve a change in one or more variables. For example, the replacement of a steel pipe by a smooth-lined pipe will change the pipewall roughness and wall thickness as well as purchase, operating, and maintenance costs.

"In current tunneling practice, finite element simulations have become an integral element of the planning and design process. These models are most often manually generated using 2D CAD drawings, which is a laborious and time consuming process. In this paper, we propose a BIM based approach, in which the 3D FE-model is automatically generated through a set of compatible geometries of individual components, i.e. the geology, alignment, lining and the TBM. The BIM model also includes all relevant model parameters of the tunneling project that can then be incorporated into subsequent analysis to be performed during the tunnel drive. The setup and the execution of the FE-analysis are performed automatically utilizing all required data from BIM. The applicability and efficiency of the proposed strategies is demonstrated by means of project data from the Wehrhahn-line metro project in Düsseldorf, Germany. Both the design as well as the construction stage is considered. INTRODUCTIONIt is recommend to employ Finite Element (FE) simulations in order to ensure a high degree of safety and quality for any given project (Guglielmetti et al. 2012). As such, FE models form an integral part in the design and planning stages of modern tunneling projects. These models are often time consuming to construct and require data from many different sources. This data is most often not centrally stored and therefore not easily accessible. Additionally, the formats in which project data are stored are typically not compatible with the formats required by an FE program. This is especially true in the case of geometrical data, such as CAD drawings. Although existing design drawings are most often used as the basis for a FE model, a direct import into a FE program is most often not successful as the imported data generates a geometry that does not fulfill the requirements of a FEM model, such as model connectivity. Even if a geometry is successfully imported, other necessary aspects of an FE model, such as boundary conditions and material properties, must be applied manually. These incompatibilities inevitably result in the creation of a new model, which, especially in the case of complex 3D models, is a time consuming process."

Red mud has been reported as a potential resource for lithium. To investigate the leaching behavior of lithium, a lithium-rich red mud was neutralized with hydrochloric or oxalic acid and then leached with acetic acid. When red mud was neutralized using dilute hydrochloric acid, about 58 to 60 percent of lithium was leached with 25 percent acetic acid at 95 °C for 60 min, while more than 95 percent of sodium and 85 percent of calcium were dissolved in the leachate solution. When oxalic acid was used to neutralize red mud prior to acetic acid leaching, lower lithium leaching efficiencies of about 42 to 47 percent were observed. Nevertheless, these leaching efficiencies of lithium were close to that of calcium and much higher than those of sodium under the same conditions. In this study, 25 percent (v/v) of acetic acid at 85 °C for 60 min was demonstrated to be the optimum conditions for lithium extraction from oxalic acid-neutralized red mud using acetic acid. The results are useful and of interest for lithium recovery and purification from red mud.

ABSTRACT Lateritic bauxite deposits of economic size and grade in Sierra Leone occur on granulites of the Kasila series. The high grade trihydrate ores of Mokanji are exploited by SIEROMCO since 1964. Remaining reserves are small (2 million tons) and operation moved over to the Gondama deposits of similar grade. Port Loko bauxite reserves are estimated at 100 million tons and are of relatively lower grade. It is planned to treat this ore locally into alumina. Guinea's bauxite reserves exceed those of any other nation. They occur as hard lateritic bauxite covers on plateaus of the Pre-Cambrian sedimentary formations and on doleritic intrusions. The genesis is still controversial. The Sangaredi mine has produced high grade ore for the last 10 years. Friguia exploits a relatively lower grade ore at a rate of about 2 million tpy to be treated in their local alumina plant. Kindia ore is mined at a yearly rate of 2,5 million tons since 1974. Untouched reserves at Ayékoyé and Tougué/Dabola are estimated at 6,000 million tons.

Two porphyry copper orebodies, the North and Central MM orebodies, have been found through regional and structural geologic works, about 5 Km south of Chuquicamata, under a gravel bed of approximately 100 m and in the west side of the West Fissure. The mineralization is emplaced in a coarse granodioritic porphyry, predominantly with sericitic alteration. In the North MM ore-body, with 200 million metric tons of 1.0% Cu, the mineralization is mainly chalcopyrite, bornite, digenite and molibdenite. In the central MM orebody, with 700 million metric tons of 1.3% Cu, there are large veins of enargite, chalcocite and bornite, the last one increasing in depth, separated by chalcopyrite and pyrite zones; in these veins there are interesting gold and silver values. Both orebodies have an upper enrichment of chalcocite and covellite, with pyrite envelope. According with these characteristics, the MM orebodies could he the upper part, with sericitic alteration, of the Chuquicamata porphyry copper system, displaced by the West Fissure system movements, but we couldn't eliminate the possibility that MM can be a new orebody, different of Chuquicamata.

The formation of petroleum is normally thought of as a geologically lengthy process, involving the accumulation of organic matter, its gradual burial, diagenetic breakdown via geochemical reactions, maturation, heating within a 75-150'C "oil window" induced by normal geothermal gradients in the subsiding basin, and slow product migration into structural traps (Tissot and Welte, 1984, Hunt, 1979). The entire process can take millions of years and, indeed, most oil reservoirs probably formed in this manner. How-ever, today in sedimented, submarine rift basins (Fig. 1), Cl to >C40 hydrocarbons with the chemical and physical properties of crude oil are forming in demonstrably much shorter time by rapid thermal maturation of immature organic matter in hydrothermal regimes that are unusually high for sedimentary basins (Brault and Simoneit, 1988a, b; Didyk and Simoneit, 1988; Kawka and Simoneit, 1987; Peter et al., 1988; Simoneit, 1983; 1984; 1985a,b; 1988; Simoneit et al., 1984; 1987; 1988).

During the 1970's geostatisticians were often accused of not paying sufficient attention to geologic features in the computerised generation of ore reserves. Unfortunately this charge was all -too-often justified and the results of such studies tended to be oversimplified and failed to reveal the full potential of computerised reserve estimation and geostatistical methods. There were some notable exceptions to this trend. Techniques were described that paid a great deal of respect to the geologic characteristics peculiar to certain deposits (Rendu J-M, 1984, Barnes T. E., 1982). At Gold Fields several techniques have been developed for handling the geologic characteristics of ore bodies for reserve estimation purposes. These have developed over time and the evolution of their adoption has been a reflection of our own learning experience from the practical application of computerised reserve estimation on many precious metal s deposits. The past two decades has seen the application of the mechanical flotation machine, originally developed primarily for metal1iferous ore beneficiation, increasingly applied to cleaning coal in the 28x0 T. Mesh size range. Internal cell hydrodynamic studies of mechanical flotation machines of all sizes, as well as computer aided modeling studies of flotation kinetics has, within the last five years, established a basis for optimizing coal flotation circuit design and machine operation, and has a1 so pointed a way toward improvements in mechanical flotation machine design for the future. Consideration of the trend toward increased fines produced by current mining techniques, as well as the environmental need for a progressively cleaner product, lends support to basing the design of the mechanical coal flotation machine of the future on finer feed; below 100 microns in size. Future types of mechanical flotation machines, which may satisfy the fine coal cleaning requirements for a significant improvement in product grade while maintaining the combustible recovery levels of current technology, are discussed.

INTRODUCTION The Laurens Street section of the Northwest Line of the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System, located along Pennsylvania Avenue between Pitcher Street and North Avenue is situated in material which cannot be definitely categorized as soil or rock. However, in the area of residual soils in which these tunnels were constructed, considerable attention was required to determine the character of the ground so that the designers and the constructors could properly evaluate the behavior of the ground and plan their respective efforts accordingly. The Laurens Street sections structures consist of twin rock tunnels, station structure, traction power substation, vent shafts at both ends of the station, the midline vent shaft, and the twin mixed-face tunnels. This paper concentrates on the mixed-face tunnels which extend from Station 99+67.03 (O.B.) to Station 102+49.00 (O.B.) at the southern end of the section. Since the completion of the design of this project, the Laurens Street section has been renamed the Upton Station. (See Figures 1 and 2). SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS At early stages, three preliminary studies were performed by the General Soils Consultant (Ref. 1, 2, & 3). The purpose of the first study was to ascertain the generalized geological and subsurface conditions which might be encountered in the region. No borings were performed for this study. Peru has been an important source of metals since Aug. 29, 1533. On that day Francisco Pizarro took charge of the 24 t (772,000 oz) of gold and silver that constituted Atahualpa’s ransom. At today’s prices, the value of that booty ranges between $100 and $150 million, depending on the proportion of gold to silver. Since then, Peru’s silver and gold production has been legendary. Current mine production Most of Peru’s metals are mined from the Andes Mountains and its foot-hills. The Andes run the length of the country parallel to the Pacific coastline from Ecuador to Chile, a distance of nearly 3000 km (I 875 miles). They are about 300 km (187 miles) wide and much of the range is more than 3000 m (9900 ft) in elevation. High plateaus (altiplanos) occupy a large part of the range. Both flanks are rutted by large valleys and canyons. Many of these peaks are prodigious. which make road building expensive and adds to the cost of mining.

Advancements in tunneling technology and underground construction, plus rapidly rising costs of land, and a higher priority being placed on urban esthetics, make tunnels a more attractive option for certain portions of the highway construction program. Recent emphasis placed on fuel conservation reinforces the need for tunnels as a means of shortcutting circuitous routings designed to avoid potentially undesirable environmental impacts on any given area. Larger and more complex tunnels which have been constructed in recent years attest to this greater interest. More than 100 major highway tunnels are in operation in the United States. Highway tunnels commonly have much higher initial cost compared to surface routes. Where extensive cut and cover is involved, temporary disruption of the surface area may prove costly. In exchange for these costs, certain environmental advantages result. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the environmental advantages of highway tunnels and some of the unsolved problems related to obtaining maximum use of highway tunnels and research underway to help solve these problems.
