"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) is leading an effort to develop the next generation of self-escape breathing apparatus for egress from confined spaces in emergency scenarios. A backpack style closed-circuit mine escape respirator design was one configuration explored as part of the research imperative directed by the 2006 MINER Act. Stakeholder feedback from MSHA and at the NIOSH Breathing Air Supply Partnership Meeting indicated a smaller belt worn unit that does not sacrifice performance is desirable. This paper outlines some further technology advancements that may be investigated toward developing such a small-sized respirator. Technologies being considered are novel chemicals for improved carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption and oxygen (O2) production, eliminating a dedicated CO2 scrubber by incorporating its function in the spaces of the respirator’s breathing loop and storing O2 in a liquid form with long standby capabilities. When these technologies are applied to a future design, there is the possibility of having an escape respirator that can be belt worn and capable of being certified to 42 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 84 standards, including sub-part O for escape purposes including mine escape. BACKGROUND NIOSH NPPTL has a Research and Development effort to provide mine workers with state-of-the-art breathing air technologies to comprehensively support initial and continued self-escape, refuge alternatives, and rescue needs, resulting from mine emergencies. As part of this R&D effort, NIOSH invested in the development of a next-generation closed-circuit mine escape respirator (CCMER) which would be compliant with NIOSH’s respirator standard requirements, 42 Code of Federal Regulations Part 84, including sub-part O. The design features of the CCMER also address the MINER Act’s requirements for transitioning between devices without the need for doffing the initially donned device. It would also allow for improved protection when using voice communications with a donned device ."

Traveling grate is a widely used process for iron ore pellet production, but the thermal state of pellets in the drying section is still unclear. In this study, the temperature distribution of the drying section was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results indicate there is a coupling effect in the drying section of a traveling grate. Gas with higher temperature in down-draught drying (DDD) transfers heat to the up-draught drying (UDD) through the gap of the insulation board, and the temperature gradient of the pellet bed changes before reaching the insulation board. The characteristics of pellet bed expected to appear in DDD are displayed in UDD in advance. To verify the model, a contrast experiment was conducted.

The recent spate of catastrophic events at U.S. mines raises the question as to whether or not the mine safety and health system in the U.S. is broken. The prescriptive regulatory regime in the U.S. is not a cure-all for a broken system. Without totally dismissing the contribution of a prescriptive regulatory approach, this paper argues that safety in the U.S. mining industry would be enhanced if the nation adopted a scheme that provides a balance between specification standards and two alternatives: performance and systems-based standards. This would allow effective and flexible means to continuous health and safety performance improvement. Mine operators, regulators and politicians could then go beyond thinking that compliance alone equals strong safety by creating a proactive system that emphasizes continuous improvement. By adopting performance and systems-based standards, exemplary safety and health performers can be recognized, allowing regulators to focus their efforts on those without sound occupational safety systems and who have substandard safety performance. The efficient and effective utilization of hydraulic excavators relies on, among other factors, a better understanding of the formation resistance during the excavation process. Studies on hydraulic shovel excavators have focused on optimizing the digging process by considering the reaction of the boom, stick and bucket, and analyzing the resulting moments at the shovel’s front-end joints. These studies failed to understand resistive forces from a statistical viewpoint. The purpose of this paper is to develop machine-learning models capable of predicting the formation of resistive forces during shovel excavation. The shovel’s excavation was simulated in the PFC 5.0 environment using a typical field-size hydraulic shovel bucket to generate the shovel contact forces required to overcome formation resistance

Entry stability in coal mines is dependent on geologic conditions and engineering controls. Most engineering controls in ground control are predictable and standardized for typical geologic conditions. However, geologic anomalies may exist that are difficult to detect with traditional core hole drilling. Borescopes offer a cost-efficient way to gather more geologic data between core holes. Additional data obtained from borescope results provide a clearer picture to enhance detection of hazardous conditions due to geologic anomalies. The equipment, methods, and analysis of borescope results provide geomechanical engineers with a clear understanding of strata behavior and the best information to implement roof control plans and supplemental support to enhance miner safety and health. INTRODUCTION Borescope technology has changed very little since its inception. However, the idea to use borescopes to examine roof strata started with the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1979 with the production of a fiber-optic borescope (FitzSimmons, et al., 1979). The first documented use of a borescope in the coal mining industry began during the 1980s in Australia by researcher John Shepherd. Shepherd’s idea was to use a borescope to collect a series of data points from the roof lithology and compose a geologic cross section. The cross section was then used to identify key features that suggested the beginnings of roof failure. The features Shepherd identified were bedding plane separations in the roof and low angle, extension, and tensile failures. Shepherd also suggested that the borescope findings could be used for geologic mapping for lithological variation, fracture distribution, and determining if supplemental roof support was needed (Shepherd, et al., 1986). In the United States the first publication about borescope usage for coal mine stability assessment was by Su and associates in 1999, who specifically related the combination of using borescope, geophysical, and corehole data to produce geologic hazard maps (Su et al., 1999). This work directly linked the usage of a borescope with the design of supplemental roof support. The use of borescopes in mining was adopted industry wide by the 2000s. Operator case studies were being published using borescopes to aid in supplemental support recommendations and hazard mapping. An Australian study published in 2007 based the optimization of secondary support after each longwall pass on the results of borescope data. The study stated that the borescope was an invaluable tool for understanding roof behavior (Black, et al., 2007). In 2009, a publication by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) took the concept of borescoping one step further. The work centered around creating a roof quality index (RQI) for limestone mines based on borescope data. The RQI attempted to assign a ranking to establish the nature of the roof and its stability (Ellenberger 2009). In theory, this would have been a very useful tool, but the RQI system has not been widely adopted in the industry.

"PROJECT OVERVIEWThe Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point (BCP) and Associated Works will be the seventhland crossing between Shenzhen and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of China.The project includes site formation of about 23 hectares of land for the development of the BCP and anapproximately 11-kilometre (km) long dual two-lane trunk road (the “Connecting Road”), connecting theBCP with the existing Fanling Highway. The route alignment is within a relatively rural area of HongKong, with very limited similar infrastructure works carried out nearby. It passes beneath bothmountainous terrain, and alluvial plains, and falls within an area of several major regional faults andassociated metamorphism, resulting in a complex variety of ground conditions.ALIGNMENTThe Civil Engineering and Development Department of the Government of the Hong Kong SpecialAdministrative Region carried out extensive public engagement in selecting the alignment of theConnecting Road. Over 70 consultation forums with public bodies, including the District Councils, RuralCommittees, local representatives, etc. were held during the alignment design process. In order toalleviate the concerns of various nearby villages, and to minimize land clearance and environmentalproblems, the original alignment of 10 km long (3.5 km of tunnels and 6.5 km of viaducts) was revised toits final alignment of 11 km long which comprises 5.7 km of tunnels, 4.3 km of viaducts and 1.0 km of atgrade roads.The finally adopted alignment commences at the southern end with an interchange with the existingFanling Highway, part of Route 9, which is a dual three lane expressway currently being widened to dual4 lane. Alongside the expressway is the main rail connection to the mainland of China, and theinterchange viaducts connecting to the southern portal of the Lung Shan tunnel must cross over thisrailway. The southern portal is located in the foothills of Lung Shan, and the 4.8km long tunnel is alignedin a north-northeasterly direction. The southern half passes under mountainous terrain of Lung Shan,and then crosses a valley containing the Kwan Tei river. The northern section comprises low hillsseparated by an alluvial plain and Tan Chuk Hang village area. At the northern end, the tunnel turns tothe north-west to connect with Sha Tau Kok road, an existing single carriageway road, with a newroundabout interchange. Mid-way along this tunnel there will be a ventilation building, connected to the main tunnel by a 330m long ventilation adit. To the north-western side of this interchange is the900m long Cheung Shan tunnel, and after this the remaining 4.3km of the highway connecting with theBoundary Control Point is to be constructed as an elevated viaduct. The alignment is shown in Figure 1."

A heap-leach field test was conducted during the 1993-1994 winter season at Carmacks, Yukon Territory, Canada. The purpose of the test was to demonstrate the viability of heap leaching Carmacks oxide copper ore in an arctic setting on a year-round basis. The test itself utilized a 5-m-diam crib loaded with 250 t of composite ore from the Carmacks copper deposit. The ore was stacked to a total height of 7 m in the crib, including 1 m of ore as an over- layer above the emitter system. This matched the plan for the commercial heap at the time when the test was started. The design also replicated an interior segment of the commercial heap. Leaching was done at a flow rate of 0.2 L/min/m2 using leachate at 21 °C. This temperature was maintained with no external heat input other than normal process heat transferred from electrowinning to the leachate via solvent extraction. Winter conditions were quite typical of those expected at the mine site. The temperature reached -54°C, while averaging -13°C over a three-month period. In spite of some flow system problems, leaching continued unabated, and freezing was limited to the insulating ore over-layer and isolated points near the outer crib walls. Thus, the test demonstrated that year-round heap leaching of Carmacks copper ore is practical in an arctic setting.

In recent years, metal-producing companies have increased their investment in automation and technological innovation, embracing new opportunities to enable transformational change. Transformation to a digital plant can fundamentally revolutionize how industrial complexes operate. The abundant and growing quantity of real-time data and events collected in the grinding and flotation circuits in a mineral processing plant can be used to solve operational issues and optimize plant performance. A grade recovery model is used to identify the best operating conditions in real time. The strategy for increasing the value of instrumentation in current plants is reviewed. An optimal Gaudin size distribution model provides augmented information from traditional sensors to find the optimal grind cut size to reduce metal losses in the flotation circuits. Sensors in flotation circuits enable an estimate of the recovery and determination of the optimal froth depth and aeration using an air hold up flotation model. A strategy of classifying data for on-line generation of insights to using operational intelligence tools is described. The implementation of a recovery/grind strategy with industrial examples in non-ferrous mineral processing is presented.

This requirement regulates the amount of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) that can be emitted from an off-highway diesel engine. In Europe, the Euro V standards are driving technology advancement in the sector.The European Euro V standards are required for new equipment manufactured beginning in January 2019. U.S. Tier 4 standards for heavy-duty off-road engines came into effect with model-year 2014 vehicles and equipment. China 6 standards come into effect in July 2020. India’s Bharat Stage VI standards will take full effect in 2020, and the phase-in of BSVIcompliant clean fuels began in April 2018.Caterpillar, Cummins and MTU are three of the leading manufacturers of engines for the mining sector. The transformation of raw iron ore into high quality steel can take place via several processes. A general consistent theme involves the upgrading of the iron ores via methods such as flotation and magnetic separation, the preparation of an agglomerate such as via pelletization or sintering, the smelting of the agglomerate into a high grade iron product, and the further refining of iron into specific steel alloys. Each of these steps admit potential for optimizations and alternatives, and the process overall is critical to meeting the world’s continuing iron demands.

IDOM combines inventory theory, dynamic programming, computer simulation and interactive technique to formulate a production schedule for open-pit mines. "Caterpillar has developed the Cat GH800B longwall plow system, designed for mining very low coal seams at high rates. Building on the attributes of the proven GH1600 plow system, the Caterpillar longwall team in Lünen, Germany, worked with the German Ibbenbüren Mine to design and construct a system for mining an anthracite seam averaging only 0.85 m (33.5 in.) thick. The result is the GH800B plow and associated longwall system, which is now operating in the Ibbenbüren Mine - where the seam does not exceed 1 m (39 in.) in height.The Cat GH800 plow, with an installed power of 2 x 400 kW, has been the plow of choice for seam heights from 0.9 to 2 m (35 to 78 in.), regardless of seam inclination or coal hardness. But the lower the coal seam, the more difficult the extraction process. Flexibility, reliability, efficiency and serviceability of the whole system had to be refined for maximum productivity in such a minimal height, but several key modifications led to success.The armored face conveyor (AFC) modifications for the GH800B plow system include PF4 plow line pans with a replaceable top trough and a new plow guide made of a one-piece casting to provide extra strength and durability while being lower in height than the previous welded version. External dogbone connectors between the line pans and a strong and flexible relay bar between the AFC and the roof supports (shields) further adapt the conveyor for very low seam operation. To increase coal throughput, the engineering team widened the conveyor crosssection with extended side plates."

This paper describes two new gas diagnostic techniques which have been used successfully to determine: 1) the combustion status of underground mines which have been sealed due to fire (Littol1 Ratio); and 2) the location of fires in abandoned, underground mines or waste banks (Kim Ratio). The Litton Ratio makes use of the rate of change of CO, calculated on both an air-free and methane-free basis, from mine gas samples and compares these values with those expected from a normal, combustion-free environment. The Kim Ratio uses the concentrations of total hydrocarbons, C2 ?C5, less the methane, to arrive at ratio values which increase as combustion intensity increases. The details of these two new techniques, their application to real situations, and their limitations will be discussed.

Lignite open cast mine "Dubrave" is the largest lignite mine in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The open cast mine was designed with two external waste dumps. Waste dump "West" is the major dump, while "Cajici" dump is used for dumping waste taken from leveling the terrain. The major waste dump contains 14.6 million cu.m. of waste, while the side waste dump contains 3 million cu.m. of waste. Existing situation with available sites for depositing the waste shows that additional space for dumping the waste must be provided. Three options can be taken into consideration. The fact is that none of the three options are suitable for the current production situation. This article deals with the optimization process for obtaining the optimal variant where a waste dump can be located and selection of the most valuable option.

Mixed integer linear programming (MILP) production scheduling models can be used to evaluate if tonnage improvement projects will deliver value over all time periods and whether new bottlenecks will be created. These MILP models can evaluate the interconnected effects of mine and process capacities, mining locations, cutoff grades, stockpiles, and orebody grade/tonnage distributions. A case study compares potential value creation from a mine capacity increase, a mill capacity increase, or a simultaneous increase in all capacities. For perspective, project valuations for capacity increases are compared against valuations for cost reduction projects, mine planning improvements such as phase design, dynamic cutoff grades and stockpiling, and the impact of geostatistics improvements in the areas of block model accuracy and ore control selectivity.

Attempts were made to improve the recovery of coarse phosphate particles by adding selected frothers or precoated fine particles. A number of frothers for floating, specifically coarse coal and metallic minerals, were examined. Two of the frothers increased the flotation recovery of coarse phosphate by 3% on bench scale. Plant evaluation yielded improvements in overall phosphate recovery in the presence of these frothers. Addition of fine particles was also found to enhance coarse flotation under given conditions. Size, amount, and hydrophobicity of the fines added was determined to have a major influence on the coarse flotation efficiency. The grade of the product with and without frothers and particulate additives remained the same. Change in froth stability and viscosity are believed to be the primary reasons for enhanced recovery of coarse phosphate particles.

Introduction A number of processes for deriving more convenient liquid and gaseous fuels from coal are commercially available or in final stages of development. Generally, synfuels from coal processes have efficiencies ranging from 50 to 70%. Considerable engineering design and development work are necessary to bring forth commercial plants using the various technologies-but technological breakthroughs are not expected or needed. Gasification While a variety of solids handling, gas contacting, and gas quality upgrading techniques may be employed in the various gasification processes, the primary goal is the same-to convert a sulfur-containing solid to an essentially sulfur-free gaseous product. The gaseous product may be a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide with nitrogen. Definitions are not rigorous, but high-Btu gas is generally over 900 Btu/scf(33 534 kJ/m3) and low-Btu gas is generally below 350 Btu/scf(13 041 kJ/m3). Medium or intermediate gas falls between these values. High-Btu production is more difficult, as it requires additional upgrading of a low- or intermediate-Btu gas stream to produce a commercially acceptable product. The carbon/ hydrogen ratio is adjusted either by rejecting a portion of the carbon, increasing the hydrogen, or a combination of both. The chemical processing steps include production processing gas containing carbon oxides and hydrogen by the reaction of carbon and steam (gasification); reaction of hydrogen and coal to form methane (a hydrogasification process); reaction of hydrogen and carbon monoxide to produce methane (methanation); and the removal of impurities. The gasification processes share a number of common techniques. The coal received at the plant site must be further cleaned and crushed or ground before it can enter the gasifier. Conventional cleaning methods are used to remove extraneous materials such as metal, rocks, etc. For some processes the coal must be finely ground so it may be fluidized or entrained in a flowing gas stream. For other processes crushing and sizing only are required. Agglomerating coals may be pretreated by heating, mild oxidation with air, or other procedures to assure smooth gasifier operation and to avoid reactor plugging. Nonagglomerating coals Such as lignite and subbituminous coal normally do not require pretreatment. Feeding a solid material such as coal to a higher pressure reactor is a difficult task. Dry feeders using a series of pressurized lock hoppers, or wet systems in which a slurry is pumped into the reactor, are used. The gasification step is the heart of the process. Here, the solid feed material is contacted with synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen). The coal is devolatilized and a portion of the fixed carbon converted to methane. The gas-solids contacting methods used include fixed beds, fluidized beds, moving beds, entrained beds, and free-fall systems. The gasification process, overall, is endothermic and the heat required to maintain reaction rates is usually supplied by burning a portion of the coal feed. External heat sources such as electric resistance heating, molten salt or solid heat carriers, and the introduction of a hot hydrogen stream also have been tested. Following the gasification step the particulate materials and heavy hydrocarbons contained in the reactor effluent are removed by a water quench and solids separation system. If low-Btu gas or synthesis gas is the desired product, the raw gas is scrubbed to remove carbon dioxide and sulfur compounds and then is used directly. In this study, several methodologies to manage low grade and often competent portion of the ore have been proposed and tested in lab, pilot and operational scales. Relevant to this subject, the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE) has developed Grade Engineering® (GE) concept to modify feed streams by rejecting the low grade and possibly hard components in the stream at the early stages of a value chain. Application of GE requires to understand the impact of the process on the value chain as they are value modifiers on in situ opportunities. Traditional modelling approaches and tools do not have the ability to run the analysis in a block model scale with high fidelity in an integrated value chain. Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES) in conjunction with sophisticated analytical tools such as a neural network (NN) was used to develop and reconcile a fully integrated value chain. The value chain model makes it possible to run all available blocks in the Geomet block model, which could be several millions, under possible scenarios for Grade Engineering for economic evaluation analysis and mine planning.

Glass sands fall into that extremely select category of mineral deposits that requires a fantastic degree of natural concentration (95% +) of a single component before they can even be considered as ores suitable for further refinement. The combination of geological factors that has produced such an environment of "mineralogical single-mindedness" has appeared only rarely. Factors that require consideration in the economic evaluation of a potential glass-sand deposit can be grouped into three categories: 1) geological (e.g., size, shape, structure); 2) petrographic (e.g., grain size, accessory minerals, nature of iron contaminants); 3) geographic - political (e.g., proximity to consumer, size of market, zoning restrictions). Of particular con ern is the nature of the iron contamination. Iron-bearing species appear as 1) accessory mineral grains, either detrital or authigenic, 2) cements, 3) grain coatings, and 4) quartz-grain inclusions. Selection of the cheapest form of beneficiation requires precise information on the mineralogy of the iron species and their detailed petrography. Because of the antipathetic relationships, in many parts of the United States and Canada between the geographical locations of glass plants and the geological distribution of glass sands, the selection of ac suitable source for a particular glass plant may be dichotomous. One may seek either an exceedingly pure "classic" type glass sand that is relatively distant and whose cost includes a major transportation charge or a relatively proximate and somewhat "impure" source whose cost includes a substantial fee for beneficiation.
