There are about 1.8 Mt (2 million st) of discarded dolomitic-limestone tailings from the Gays River lead/zinc mining operation in Nova Scotia currently stockpiled in a tailings pond at the mill site. Neutralization effectiveness similar to an agricultural grade limestone and low contents of residual metals make the tailings a potential source of soil conditioner material for the local market. However, the fine particle size, 98% passing 147 pm (about 100 mesh), and a moisture content of 20% make their handling, shipping, and application to soils difficult. The tailings were agglomerated into small hard pellets with various amounts of soil nutrients, moisture content less than 13%, and pH values ranging from 6.5 to 8.7.

A new method is proposed for measuring the grindability of solids and the energy efficiency of grinding mills. The method is based on a similarity law of fracture mechanics for elastic materials in conjunction with the self- preserving character of the size distributions formed when feed particles are comminuted individually in compression. The single-particle grindability index reflects more closely the inherent resistance of a solid to size reduction than the grindability indices currently in vogue. The performance of grinding mills is evaluated in comparison with the single-particle breakage mode, which has the highest energy utilization or efficiency of all mechanical grinding routes. For a given set of stipulations, the performance index of the commonly used ball mill when grinding dolomite is found m he only 21%. compared to 44% for the high-pressure roll mill, a newly-invented energy-efficient mill. The difference is also reflected in the energy consumed per unit mass offines produced when closed-loop grinding circuits are simulated, which shows that the high-pressure roll mill circuit is invariably more energy-efficient than the ball mill circuit, provided the energy input per pass through the mill does not exceed a prescribed limit. Theoretical upper bounds on the yield of the ground product in a desired size range and lower bounds on the energy investment are calculated from the single-particle breakage mode which has, apart from the highest energy utilization efficiency, a minimum dispersion in size of the comminuted particles. Data on theoretical hounds for seven minerals/ores are presented. It is argued that it is unlikely that a grinding mill can be designed and a comminution circuit constructed whose performance exceeds these bench-mark values.

"The cut-off grade is one of the important parameters of mining production. Different material cut-off grade is directed to different destinations. Based on reasonable and optimal cut-off grade, long term mining plan and investment decision analysis can be made for mining managers. In view of multiple-metals open-pit, the paper has proposed that multiple-metals cut-off grade optimization model is set using the objective function to maximize net present value (NPV). The method of equivalent coefficient calculation is proposed to convert multi-metals cut-off grade optimization to a single metal cut-off grade optimization. Then the optimization model is applied in a molybdenum and tungsten large open-pit mine in china. The parameters of concentrate price are calculated by PRT in the model and the curve of grade-recovery rate is analyzed and studied according to actual production data. Based on 3D metal deposit model, the distribution of grade-tonnage is analyzed. At final step, an optimal cut-off grade is proposed to guarantee to maximize NPV. The example shows that the model of multiple-metals cut-off grade optimization can provide reasonable analysis for optimal multi-metals cut-off grade and develop optimal production strategies. Introduction Cut-off grade is one of the most important parameters in metal ore mining because of its influence on the overall economic profit of mining production. Along with the development of the mining production, dynamic optimization of cut-off grade is necessary through the analysis of technical economy. "Estimating and managing the costs of complex infrastructure projects – in the planning/design and construction phases, for both owners and contractors – has been a challenge for decades. The more complex and technologically advanced the project, the greater the uncertainty, including potential risks that are important to owners and contractors, such as:• Cost risks to owners – meeting budget and schedule, maintaining public credibility.• Cost risks to contractors – profit, consequences of loss, impacts to reputation/future work.This concern has been addressed in various ways by the underground construction industry for some time (Reilly, 2001). In particular, while significant advances have been made in cost estimating for the planning and design phases (Reilly et al., 2004), that are important to agencies and political decision-makers, it is not apparent that these advances have been widely adopted for construction cost estimates. The reasons for this may relate to lowbid considerations – any method that tends to increase the contractor’s cost estimate, by including risk or likely costs, could lead to an erosion of the contractor’s competitive position – if others are not similarly required to include such costs.Different cost estimating methods produce different levels of information. Specifically, there is a large difference in the character and depth of information if a deterministic (quantities times price plus a contingency) and risk-based cost methods are used. It is this difference in character and depth of information that is the reason that risk-based cost estimating has potential value for owners and contractors. Figure 1 presents hypothetical cost results from deterministic and risk-based methods and illustrates some of these differences.In Fig. 1, the results for deterministic and risk-based cost estimates are given related to the potential profit or loss for a typical project. As is evident in this example, there is significant potential for costs to be realized that are higher than the proposal/bid value estimated using a deterministic approach, with a 15 percent probability of a loss. There is a 30 percent probability that the project will have a reduced profit. There is a 55 percent probability that the project will return a good profit. Diesel engines are a major source of underground miners? exposure to nitrogen dioxide. In an effort to reduce the exposure of underground miners to regulated and unregulated diesel emissions, primarily particulate matter, mining companies in the U.S. are retrofitting existing and introducing new engines with various exhaust aftertreatment technologies. Different aftertreatment devices, or changing the operating temperature of a selected device, can have unexpected effects on the concentration of nitrogen dioxide emitted by a diesel-powered piece of equipment. This paper provides an overview of the effects different exhaust aftertreatment technologies available to the mining industry have on no2 emissions.

In Part I of this paper we describe two techniques that were employed in the development of mathematical descriptions of the size reduction process which takes place in a ball mill. In Part II we show how the comminution model was imbedded in a process model to effect steady-state and dynamic simulation of a closed-circuit grinding operation. Increasing emphasis is being placed on development of approaches whereby the essential characteristics of a process can be succinctly represented in terms of a mathematical description of the relationships that exist among important process variables. This activity, commonly known as mathematical modeling, predates modern electronic computers: however, these computers with their tremendous computational capability have given new impetus to the whole field. Although the computer is quite helpful in the development of mathematical models, the real value to the engineer lies in the fact that computers represent such a powerful tool for simulating systems described by mathematical models. As a consequence, engineers may simulate and thereby study the behavior of complex. interacting, systems over a broad range of process variables and configurations once appropriate process models have been developed for the sequence of steps comprising the process.

The power generation industry may be required to reduce CO, emissions if regulations related to global climate change are enacted. Coal-fired generation, which emits 82% of the power sector CO2, would be a likely target for CO2 reduction. Compliance with the Kyoto protocol will require a 30% reduction from the projected year 2012 emission level even with moderate load growth. This paper describes an analysis of power industry CO2 reduction options and their costs to assess how a generator would make compliance decisions under a mandatory CO2 emissions reduction program. Carbon sequestration, fuel switching and new plant construction are considered.

Bio-treatment of uranium contaminated soils from Fernald using the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was investigated. The experimental results showed that extraction of uranium upto 99 percent from soils were obtained with 10 percent pulp density suspension and with addition of iron (3000 mg/l) after bio-remediation time of seven days. Application of the results to industrial practices is discussed.

Today the standard method for grinding ore is the wet process. This is mainly due to the fact that the downstream process is wet and considering the total circuit dry grinding is not the most eco­nomical method for the comminution of the ore. Presently in gold ore processing dry grinding is only applied in cases where whole ore roasting is required downstream from the milling plant or if organic carbonaceous matters and sulfides are the primary reasons for the refractoriness. Since dry ore can be fed to the roaster, a dry grinding mill can advantageously be applied. In cases where d1y grinding could be applied advantageously for instance if the ore contains water soluble material and wet grinding is not possible there are serious concerns prevailing within the industty against this technology due to several reasons. Besides of the aspects as discussed later in this paper, there are several plants in operation with little success and considerable operational prob­lems. The reasons for this often lie in the fact that the several com­ponents of such a plant are bought from independent sources with­out considering the system requirements. It is essential that the dry grinding plants require accurate design between drying, pneumatic transport and grinding of the ore in the circuit. This paper will address some of these concerns raised in the industiy from a mill vendor's view along with discussing the development for the selection and configuration of the various dty grinding circuits.

Introduction Coal is the US's largest indigenous fossil fuel resource and is used to power 57% of this country's electrical generation (NCA, 1986). Congress, however, is focusing its attention on the acid rain issue and public sentiment is leaning toward further curtailments of SO2, NO, and particulates from utility and industrial coal-burning facilities. The Cool Water plant has proven that integrated-gasification-combined-cycle (IGCC) technology can reliably produce economical electrical power while limiting SO2, NOx, and particulates to a rate of only one-tenth of the federal New Source Performance Standards for coal-fired plants. Process water requirements at Cool Water are 40% less than those of a conventional coal-fired utility plant equipped with flue-gas desulfurization units for stack gas scrubbing, thus reducing waste water treatment requirements (Clark and Shorter, 1985). The IGCC technology employed at Cool Water has now been demonstrated to efficiently convert coal to electricity in an environmentally superior fashion. The Cool Water Coal Gasification Program is an unincorporated California association of six partners whose commitment is proving that the integration of gasification with combined cycle power production (IGCC) is commercially viable and environmentally safe. The 120 MW Cool Water plant began commercial production on June 24, 1984. The Program is operating it for a five-year commercial demonstration period. During past years the most difficult problem presented to the coal preparation engineer has been the cleaning of fine coal, The problem of handling fine coals is more involved than the coarser sizes, because the higher surface moisture contents complicate screening, and the larger percentages of fine near size material complicate separating problems. Low gravity high capacity specific gravity separations were not possible with equipment available at that time. Coal preparation engineers did develop machines that would effect a separation of the fines, however, to maintain a high efficiency, the point of separation had to be a relatively easy one. The more difficult separations were made in the coarse coal sections of the washeries, and the fines were generally cleaned at higher specific gravities in equipment such as tables, feldspar jigs, rheolaveurs, etc. Clean products from both processes were mixed, resulting in overall lower ash contents, During the last several years, however, we have been confronted with increasing demands ZGP more precise separations of finer coals to still further reduce ash contents. A study was begun and a program instigated to improve the cleaning of fine coal, The result of this endeavor was the development of the new cycloidal heavy medium cyclone.

Extraction of coal at Harworth Colliery is undertaken in the Deep Soft seam at roughly 1000m depth where the strata temperature is 42 "C. Production employs the longwall retreating method using high powered mechanised methods to extract coal at a rate of approximately 40,000 tonnes per week from a single face. This paper describes the climatic conditions encountered on a typical district , 6's district, where the initial ventilation set-up was as a typical U-type district which was antitropally ventilated. Under this initial set-up climatic conditions in the intake typically exceeded 30 "C effective whilst in the face area and in the return airway effective temperatures in excess of 32 "C and 33 "C were common . The paper then proceeds to describe the methods employed to attempt to improve the climatic conditions on the district, especially with regard to the coal face and return airways and describes in detail the effects of reversing the district airflow direction, employing homotropal ventilation, on the climatic conditions. The results of this reversal have been dramatic and have resulted in a substantial improvement in the climatic conditions experienced , however problems have been encountered with the control of methane gas since the changeover. The final part of the paper describes the results of computer simulations to analyse the effect of various ventilation designs on the predicted climate for future production districts in order to de- fine a district layout which will produce acceptable climatic conditions in the working zone without the need to use refrigeration techniques and which will improve methane gas control .

With increased levels of automation, capitalization, and empowerment of citizens, the traditional axis of labour versus capital or national government versus capital, upon which the allocation of benefits from a mining project was traditionally based, has shifted primarily to a capital versus community axis. In light of this paradigm shift, it is critical for the sustainability of mining that economic indicators be considered at the pre-feasibility, feasibility, and permitting stages of a project. Such indicators should emphasize the ?ripple effect? of the economic impact of a capital-intensive mining investment on a region due to outsourcing, as well as the diversified spin-off opportunities and the technological advances that can be exploited by local communities.

Manufacturers have improved various stirred mill types to be well adapted to fine and ultrafine grinding applications. These stirred mills, which are operated in wet or dry conditions, may be classified as horizontal — such as AHM-horizontal agitated media mill, IsaMill and Drais mill — or vertical — such as tower mill, Vertimill, Maxmill, Stirred Media Detritor and ATR vertical agitated media mill. The main difference between vertical and horizontal structures is in their operational variations. Additionally, the scaling-up of mills is also an important parameter for selecting the suitable orientation [1]. The purpose of this study was to investigate the dry grindability of calcite powders in a vertically and horizontally orientable laboratory batch-type stirred mill. The experimental results were evaluated using stress intensity analysis. The results showed that the d50 values decreased with increasing stress energy down to a certain point and then increased for both milling orientations. Even though the optimum stress energies for both vertical and horizontal orientations were in the range of 1 × 10−3 to 5 × 10−3 Nm at 750 and 1,500 kJ/kg energy consumption, the product size was finer for the horizontal orientation at the same stress energy value.

The Paso Diablo coal project is located in the Guasare Basin in the northwestern region of Venezuela near the border with Colombia. In 1987, Carbones del Guasare SA, a joint venture comprised of Carbozulia and A.A. Antilles Coal (an Arco and AgipCoal joint venture) was formed to develop the Paso Diablo coal reserves for world markets. Regional drilling has indicated a coal resource of more than 6 Gt (6.6 billion st). Further exploration has delineated the Paso Diablo deposit as an area particularly suited for cost-effective surface mining. The calculated economically minable reserves of this area (200 Mt or 220 million st) and the coal quality characteristics are based on extensive core drilling programs. Initial coal mining operations began in August of 1987 and the mine is presently producing at a rate of 1.5 Mt/a (1.65 million stpy). The coal is hauled about 85 km (53 miles) to a barge loading terminal at Santa Cruz de Mara using highway-type haul trucks. INTRODUCTION he most important information required for the engineering design of structures in rock is its inherent rock properties. Without providing adequate parameters on the rock property, high quality of the engineering design cannot be expected. Many laboratory rock testing methods have been developed, but they are mostly for testing intact homogeneous rock without appreciable discontinuities. In reality, the intact rock properties do not represent the behavior of rock masses because rock masses include irregularities such as joints, cracks, interlayers, variations in mineral compositjon, etc. In general the type and intensity of the rock defects may be much more important than the type of rock which will be encountered (Terzaghi, 1977; Bieniawski, 1984). In-situ rock testing can provide better information on rock parameters, but it takes a tremendous amount of effort, time and cost. In recent years, numerical modeling techniques are gaining popularity as a design tool for structures in rock bodies due to the enormous progress in computer technology (Wang, 1985; Kripakov and Melvin, 1983; Park and Ash, 1985), but it is quite dangerous to use numerical techniques without having proper input data. Bieniawski (1984) states as follows: Some design methods such as numerical techniques have outpaced our ability to provide the input data necessary for the application of these methods. In order to provide an adequate amount of input data, an extensive testing program may be required, thus major efforts in time and expenses are commonly spent, In this paper, a new rock testing method, which utilizes the principles of laser holographic interferometry, is introduced. This method requires only a few minutes to measure the modulus of elasticity and quality of a rock core sample, which does not have to be cut or ground. The Poisson's ratio can also be measured in a few minutes from a sliced rock specimen. HOLOGRAPHIC INTERFEROMETRY Principles of Holographic Interferometry In 1948, Gabor invented holography, which is the technique of reviving three dimensional images using a monochromatic light source. A full demonstration was not made then because a clean monochromatic light source was not available. Later, in the early 19601s, the laser was adopted as a monochromatic and coherent light source (Leith and Upatnieks, 1963). Since then, applications have been made in many different fields ranging from crime prevention to three dimensional television. In this technique, an image is usually recorded by means of constructing a hologram which is a record of the interference pattern formed on a high resolution photographic system as shown in Figure I. A beam splitter divides the laser beam into two beams: (1) an object beam which is expanded while passing through a beam expander and illuminates the object, and (2) a reference beam which is expanded and illuminates the holographic plate. Subsequent to an exposure, the holographic plate is developed and illuminated by the expanded reference beam. The original scene of the object is revived in a three-dimensional image. The entire instrument should be placed on a vibration free environment. The wave fields reflected by the object in two slightly different configurations can be superimposed to form an interference fringe pattern. Thus, it is possible to measure the displacement that took place between the two configurations. This method is called holographic interferometrv. There are two methods of achieving this phenomena. The first is the double exposure method, wherein two exposures of the object are made prior to developing the film. Introduction One important class of manganiferrous ores is manganiferrous-silver ores. They occur in the oxidized portions of the silver deposits of the western United States. Silver is often associated with manganese oxides, which in some ore deposits are dispersed through calcite, causing the black color of the host rock, known as black calcite. Black calcites can occur in carbonate rocks (0.3 to 50 kg Ag/t) and in volcanic rocks (less than 30 g Ag/t). Silver mineralization associated with manganese oxides and black calcites can occur in veins (Hewett, 1968) or as disseminations (Graybeal, 1981). In the US, silver-bearing manganese veins are located in a broad arc that extends from southern Colorado to southwest New Mexico, southern Arizona, and southeast Califor¬nia (Hewett, 1964). Areas of disseminated silver-manganese mineralization include the Creede and Silver Cliff districts of Colorado and the Tombstone and Hardshell districts of Arizona (Graybeal, 1981). These deposits are also characterized by significant amounts of silver halides - cerargyrite (AgCl), bromargyrite (AgBr), and iodargyrite (AgI). Black calcites are also common in these deposits. Oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment. In the past when these ores could not be smelted, they were treated generally by cyanidation at very low efficiency. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) studied the problem of treating silver-manganese ores in the early 1920s (Clevenger and Caron, 1925). It was found that the refractory silver in the original ore was insoluble in all the common solvents for metallic silver and its salts. The conclusion was that to obtain the highest recovery of silver, all the manganese had to be dissolved or the higher oxides of manganese reduced to manganous oxide. More recent results from treating refractory silver¬manganese ores were given by USBM (Scheiner et al., 1973). The silver ores from Candeleria District, NV, and Round Mountain District, CO, were investigated. Electrooxidation experiments recovered only 34% silver with minor amounts of manganese dissolved. Sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation revealed that silver extracted was proportional to the amount of SO2 used. A similar approach, using sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation, was also proposed by Rhoades et al. (1984). Hazen Research Inc. performed extensive testing on silver and manganese dissolutions from Ag-Mn ores obtained from the Candeleria and Round Mountain ore deposits. The methods examined were direct cyanidation, pretreatment with sulfurous acid followed by cyanidation, malonitrile leach, and leaching with ammonium hydroxide-sodium thiosulfate under slight oxygen pressure. The results were not satisfactory. The importance of the vast reserves of Ag-Mn ores and the lack of an efficient method to recover these metals warranted a search for new technologies. One novel method for extraction of these metals is treatment of Ag-Mn ores with acidified thiourea solutions. Preliminary results of the leaching of silver and manganese from Ag-Mn ores were very encouraging (Pesic, 1984a) ; thus, it was decided to examine the new lixiviant in more detail. Experimental Ore from the Round Mountain District was studied. It was crushed, ground, and dry sieved into monosized fractions in the range of 16 to +400 mesh. The ore composition was about 90 g Ag/t and 3% Mn, depending slightly on size. The leaching experiments were performed in apparatus described elsewhere (Pesic, 1982 and 1984b). All experiments were performed at constant temperature conditions. The leaching residues were analyzed for silver and manganese.
