In April. 1990 Addwest Minerals acquired the Phillips Ranch sulfur property. The sulfur deposit, hosted by the Permian Castile anhydrite, occurs as two distinct elongate. parallel orebodies within a series of northeast-trending grabens. After completing a positive feasibility study, based, in part. on successful drilling programs by Addwest Minerals and previous operators, the decision was made to place the property into production. Utilizing an existing on-site kasch plant, plus significant portions of the recently purchased Texasgulf Comanche Creek Frasch plant. Addwest is currently constructing an 800 long ton per day Frasch mining facility.

The appropriate software and hardware necessary to adapt an X-ray CT analyzer for the determination of coal washability was developed and successfully tested for well-characterized samples under laboratory conditions. Evaluation of the CT-based analyzer under simulated on-line conditions is also presented to verify the on-line capabilities of the newly developed X-ray CT analyzer for the control of coarse coal cleaning circuits. The investigation shows that the data obtained from CT washability analyses compare favorably with experimental sink float data. Further, image frequency was considered to evaluate the CT-Based coal washability analyzer for simulated on-line conditions. Specifically, the number of observations (image spacing) needed for accurate sampling and the total time required to perform the calculations for a representative data set were determined. This paper analyzes the 1982 coal mine accident data collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for key equipment types, by mine type, and by geographic region. The differences in hazards associated with the various equipment types are studied both in absolute (i.e., total number of incidences) and relative (i.e., incidence rate or the number of incidences per 200,000 employee or exposure hours) terms. The paper compares and contrasts the total number of incidents as well as incidence rates classified by several types of severity measures such as lost workdays cases, mean number of lost workdays per lost workdays case, fatal cases, non- fatal cases without lost workdays, total number of cases, and total number of lost workdays This statistical analysis shows that significant differences in hazards exist not only due to equipment type but also due to mine type and geographic region.

The vast majority of valuations produced for mineral properties using the net present value method provide an estimate of investment value or use value. Such an estimate can be a long way from the price that the property would actually sell for if placed on the market. Indicators from the market need to be used to validate or modify the net present value calculation if market value is being appraised. The comparable sales and replacement cost methods used in the appraisal of urban buildings generally fail when used in the appraisal of mineral properties. Other methods of sales analysis are introduced. Guidelines for what a minerals appraisal report should contain are presented.

INTRODUCTION The most serious occupational radiation episode in U.S. history was the exposure of uranium miners to radon daughters in the 1945-1968 time period. Although the maximum permissible dose at that time was 12 WLM (working level months) per year, average exposures were several times that figure, and ten times higher exposures were not uncommon. Starting in the early 1960s, mounting epidemiological evidence appeared for an excess incidence of lung cancer among these miners; up to 1974, there was an excess of 134 cases (159 observed vs 25 expected) among the 4000 in the group under study (NAS-1980). When this excess became apparent, the Federal Government took jurisdiction, greatly tightened enforcement, and in 1969 lowered the maximum permissible exposure to 4 WLM per year. These standards were met largely by a great improvement in ventilation. As a result of these measures, average miner exposures were reduced 5-fold from 1965 to 1968 and by another factor of 3 by 1970. In 1978, the 4 WLM/year maximum permissible exposure was exceeded by only 37 of 7500 underground miners, for only 16 wars it exceeded by more than 25%, and for only 8 was it exceeded by 502 (AIF-1980). The average exposures to the various groups are listed in Table 1. We see that the average exposure for all miners was 1.03 WLM, and for those who worked essentially full time underground it was 1.45 WLM. For purpose of later discussion, it will be convenient to choose a single value for average exposures. In view of the fact that employment situations and job categories are bound to vary over a lifetime of work, we take this to be 1.3 WLM/year. The purpose of this paper is not to dwell on history, but rather to address the question of whether or not this present situation is satisfactory. This question was considered recently by a study group under the auspices of National Institue of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH-1980) and it answered the question in the negative, concluding that the maximum permissible exposure should be substantially reduced. However, their arguments were incomplete and were lacking in perspective. The principal thrust of this paper is to provide some of the material overlooked. RISK TO URANIUM MINERS FROM RADON EXPOSURE In order to quantify the risk to uranium miners under present working conditions, it is first necessary to estimate the risk of lung cancer per WLM of exposure. The most straightforward way of doing this is to use the data on the group of uranium miners under study. These are listed in Table 2 for 8 exposure ranges and for the total group (NAS-1980). If all data are given equal weight, the risk is seen to be 3.5 x 10-6 per year per WLM. Much can be said in favor of using this value for the risk as dose independent; it is within one standard deviation (SD) of the observations in 5 of the 8 dose categories (as expected from the definition of SD), and within 2 SD for all 8, and for the three cases differing from the mean by more than one SD, two are above and one is below. However, the uranium miner exposures in the present situation will be far below those covered in Table 2, so it is worth considering the possibility that the risk differs from this at low doses. From the last column of Table 2 we see that the experience from all exposures below 600 WLM indicates a risk higher than the mean for the entire group by more than two standard deviations (the value 600 WLM in this comparison was deliberately chosen to maximize this deviation; for exposures below 360 WLM and 840 WLM, the excess is only 1.0 and 1.6 standard deviations respectively). In view of this tendency for the risk to be higher at lower dose, we will take the risk to be 5.0 x 10-6 per year per WLM in what we will refer to as model A. Effective and profitable mining begins with good blasting results. While the importance of sufficient energy to break the rock is recognized, more attention should be paid to the time factor in blasting. Fragmentation, looseness and the shape of the muckpile can be improved and energy levels lowered through the use of proper delays. The long delay is also the most important parameter in establishing stable walls along the final limits of the pit. The time factor in blasting is explained through the rock acceleration process and its practical application is demonstrated by case histories.

During several years of operation in Europe, South Africa and other locations, the Tri-Flo process has demonstrated substantial improvements in dense-medium dynamic-separation systems. The reasons for this improvement are: • a high-sharpness separation due to the multistage system and the application of new concepts in the design of the regeneration circuit and in the control of the medium Theology, and • the possibility of performing two cuts at different densities using a single separation device and a single regeneration circuit. This paper discusses the above points in detail with particular reference to the multistage technology (based on the circuit analysis theory) and to the control of the medium rheology (based on recent work in the modeling and simulation of the rheological behavior of dense suspensions). Concerning the multidensity separation, information is given on the new three-stage separator where the high-density separation is performed by the first stage and the low-density separation is performed by the second and third stages. This configuration (already realized in two operating plants) was selected because no particular sharpness was required at the high-density separation, while high sharpness was required at the low-density separation. However, the configuration can be inverted or a fourth stage can be added (at very low additional cost) to provide two stages for each separating density. The importance of achieving a high sharpness separation is related to minerals (industrial minerals in particular) where the density difference of the phases to be separated is very low (as in processing of lithium ores, feldspar- and others). Information is provided on plants operating in South Africa and Canada, for the beneficiation of lithium minerals and on a plant under construction in Italy for the beneficiation of feldspar. Finally, the importance of making the separation at two densities is emphasized with particular reference to coal; i.e., producing a low-ash premium coal and recovering, in the middling, a by-product without losing heating value. Also, very important for some minerals is the production of a high-grade concentrate (at the first stage) suitable for sending directly to metallurgy (e.g., chromite ores) and the production of a low-grade concentrate that can be further treated. In this way, a higher overall recovery of the valuable mineral can be achieved, and, at the same time, a reduction of the treatment costs can be obtained. All of the above applications were once considered impossible.

Mining in Mexico has an immensely long tradition. In his first letter reporting to his sovereigns from Mexico in July 1519, Hernan Cortes wrote, "To our mind it is probable that this land contains as many riches as that from which Solomon is said to have obtained the gold for the temple ... " 1 But not only precious metals drew his attention; in 1524, short of tin needed for casting guns, he found it in Taxco. As an added bonus, those who went to find it "came upon a vein of iron which according to experts is of exceeding richness." 2 Since then, the mines of Mexico have yielded up enormous amounts of mineral and continue to do so. Mexico is one of the ten principal producers of minerals world-wide both in production volume and diversity. 3 Tens of thousands of tons of iron, sulphur, and coal come from its earth annually; it is the world's second largest producer of barite; third of antimony, fluorite, and graphite. 4 Copper, zinc, silver, molybdenum, arsenic and cadmium and others are wrested from its mines. The wealth is there; but maximizing its potential requires investment, technology, and markets that the government cannot itself provide. Thus mining, since the Mexican Revolution severely restricted by both law and policy, today looks to private investment to develop its potential. Beginning in 1989, Mexico's government cautiously moved to liberalize private sector involvement in mining; 5 using the experience gained from these initial regulatory changes, the current new Mining Law was adopted in 1992 6 and new Regulations were promulgated in 1993. 7

Computer-aided control of a mining machine pl aces its operator in a safe, remote location, thus reducing health and safety risks, Sensing systems that provide machine position (xy coordinate) and heading (yaw), are extremely useful in aiding remote positioning of mining machines. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has developed two sensing systems for position and heading information: A scanning laser system based on the Lasernet sensor and a mechanical position and heading system based on linear-position transducers. The Bureau is also investigating a system from Honeywell, the modular azimuth and positioning system that employs ring-laser gyroscopes. This paper presents a brief background and status of these sensing systems as applied to the remote positioning tasks of a continuous mining machine. Included are field test results of each system operating in a room-and-pillar research section at a cooperating mine in West Virginia.

Little faith can be placed in a coal resource estimate without a clear understanding of the estimate's accuracy. Different types of coal resource estimates require different levels of accuracy. Prospecting surveys typically are done with widely spaced boreholes, while a much higher level of accuracy is required for mine design. Either way, a measure of the accuracy clearly indicates the level of confidence that can be placed in the results of the estimate. Geographic information systems (GIs) are becoming a commonly used tool for resource estimation because they not only provide a database management platform but also the graphical capabilities to visualize resource characteristics. interpolation methods used commonly in these resource studies do not typically provide a quantitative answer to the question: "How accurate is the estimate?" By comparing localized measurements at multiple locations to the interpolated thickness distribution used in a resource estimate, a quantitative analysis of accuracy can be obtained. The technique is demonstrated with a case study from Central Appalachia.

"Why geophysics? We will have to drill anyway." Reliance on geophysical methods for detailed target appraisals will increase as direct surface evidence becomes more subtle. This will create a need for more effective and efficient geo- physical programs. Numerous computer-based techniques that deal with a broad range of geophysical problems are described in the literature. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a framework for the systematic application of these techniques to effect an overall optimization of the geophysical appraisal. The concepts described are not technique specific, but should serve as a guide for increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of any geophysical program. Fig. 1 shows a generalized flow chart of the major aspects of the program described. The three main subdivisions of a 'geophysical program are discussed: (1) survey design, (2) data processing, and (3) data interpretation. Detailed flow charts, outlining the goals, the requirements for meeting the goals, and the steps followed within each subdivision are presented at the beginning of each section. The objectives and type problems of each subdivision are defined, followed by a description of applicable computer methods. . References are cited that give a general cross section of computer techniques available in the literature, and examples are given in each subdivision to demonstrate basic concepts and the use. of computers in solving the type problems.

"Rock mass classification systems are often applied in many empirical design practices in rock engineering, some contrasting with the original intent and applications of these classification systems, for example, estimation of TBM performance in various ground conditions. While accurate estimation of machine performance is significantly impacted by rock mass properties, parameters used in many of the existing classifications are more related to ground support design and not rock mass boreablity. The results of many investigations on this issue have shown a weak correlation between TBM rate of penetration and rock mass classification. This limitation can be overcome by fine tuning the rock mass classification input parameters to represent influence of rock mass properties on TBM performance as has been the objective of RME or QTBM. This paper will offer an overview of the impact of rock mass on TBM performance and introduces an empirical equation for predicting performance of rock TBMs based on rock mass classification. The results of the preliminary analysis of a new model has revealed that the use of the proposed system can offer a reasonable accuracy for estimation of TBM performance in various rock masses. 1. INTRODUCTION Hard rock tunnel boring has become more or less the standard method of tunneling for tunnels of various sizes with lengths over 1.5–2 km. Estimating the performance of TBM is a vital phase in tunnel design, and for the choice of the most appropriate excavation machine. During the past three decades, numerous TBM performance prediction models for evaluation of TBM rate of penetration and advance been proposed. In brief, all the TBM performance prediction models can be divided into two distinguished approaches, namely theoretical and empirical ones (Rostami et al., 1996). The most common and recent works on this topic are summarized in Table 1. Currently, two models including Colorado School of Mines or CSM (Rostami and Ozdemir, 1993; Rostami, 1997) and Norwegian University of Science and Technology or NTNU (Blindheim, 1979; Bruland, 1998) models are the most recognized TBM performance prediction and prognosis models in use around the world."

Caro's (peroxymonosulfuric) acid has been reported to destroy WAD (weakly acid dissociable) CN-but, until recently, the technology has not been demonstrated in other than a laboratory setting. During the last two years, Caro's acid has been shown to successfully detoxify WAD CN-in tailings at two large North American gold mines. Using on-site FMC generators, Caro's acid reduced the WAD CN-from 40-55 ppm to below 20-35 ppm WAD CN-, the target range for the two mines. The detoxification costs using Caro's acid were less than 50% of the treatment cost of using hydrogen peroxide, the previous oxidant of choice. In addition to the considerable savings in CN-detoxification costs, lower WAD CN-values were achieved and the detoxification time with Caro's acid was greatly reduced compared to hydrogen peroxide.

"Mining makes civilization possible. It also creates socio-environmental liabilities forcing us to ask how much more of this mining can our planet support. It is clear that the future of mining differs from mining in the future. The laws of nature are being compromised by mining. This paper studies the problems at the core of the mining business which need to be addressed. What kind of mining will serve our existence with nature on this planet? What kind of mining perspectives are we able to formulate without having negative effects for future generations? Is mining technologically sustainable? The values of predictions, imagination, and creativity must be integrated to define what mining should be. Those values should be in the technologies necessary to restoring equilibrium of nature (Geomimic) as well as in complete extraction of metals, better utilization of the mineral reserves, and design the usage of metals to recycle. The purpose of this research is to examine many views and perspectives for future generations and to accelerate the pace of innovation of having mining without socio-environmental liabilities by design and by understanding nature. INTRODUCTION The future of mining is being stifled by many antiquated and stagnant attitudes and policies by the industry and society as a whole. The time is now or never for real action and education against these attitudes and to upgrade them to meet the current needs of this planet if we are to survive. Doing this will prove that we understand and respect nature for us and our posterity. It will also show a positive assessment that the mining process can be reversed before the point of no return. And that is to say, only if reversibility is still an option. It may not be anymore but it’s worth a try. We need to use our imagination and engineering know-how to come up with new proposals to change the core of mining. It would entail re-engineering. There is a profound difference between the future of mining and mining in the future. The future of mining is the continuation and persistence of past practices in the industry and expecting new results. Mining in the future requires a paradigm shift for extraction through modern thinking about mining as it pertains nature. The new paradigm for mining in the future would restore equilibrium with nature. Always keep in mind the connection of mining to nature. What is the future of nature? To predict mining in the future we need to use past experiences in mining and our knowledge of modern science and engineering to formulate a prototype that will enhance mining while maintaining equilibrium with nature. Mining and protecting nature are not mutually exclusive. This new prototype has nothing to do with the level of bonding or insurance that the mining industry can legally provide. The goal of this paper is to contribute some new ideas to help transform the mining industry based on the laws of nature and its limitations. Using this new prototype we will develop the following 1. Extraction of minerals Reserves-Dimensions-Technologies 2. Usage of mineral resources-Manufacture’s products designed to be reused and recycled 3. Defining Productivity Productivity is a principal concern to all organizations - industrial, commercial, government, and academic. As a ratio of output to input, productivity measures the efficiency of an industrial process, much as thermodynamic efficiency measures the useful work obtained from the available energy consumed. However, there is one important difference. Whereas thermodynamic efficiency is a dimensionless a ratio of energies, productivity output and input are usually measured in different physical units. Nevertheless, the resulting ratio is a normalized expression for unit of output per unit of input to the process. In the early days of coal, mining was essentially a hand loading operation. There was little expenditure of alternative forms of energy within the process. Loading required expenditures of human energy on the order of 1.2 MJ/t (1,000 Btu per st). And if we accept the conventional value "you load 16 tons," the output to input ratio is 14.5 t (16 st) per manshift. In energy terms, it is on the order of 116 MJ/t (100,000 Btu per st) produced per labor Btu expended. However, the latter measure of efficiency was not meaningful in economic terms, while the 14.5 t (16 st) per manshift was significant. Since labor was the principal component of cost, it represented a direct relationship to the cost of production: [ ] Furthermore, when workers were paid directly on the basis of tons produced, the labor cost per ton was specified directly by this rate. With the introduction of mechanized loading, significant increases in productivity occurred, when measured on the basis of tons per manshift. Electric power consumed about 11.6-116 MJ/t (10,000-100,000 Btu per st). This makes the 29-GJ/t (25 million Btu per st) coal output/input ratio between 100 and 1,000. That is one or two orders of magnitude lower than hand loading. However, electric energy was quite inexpensive compared to labor, which made the mechanization economically efficient. The accepted productivity measure continued to be tons per manshift. This measure includes some of the effects of mechanization: namely, the additional manpower needed to maintain the machines and support the equipment that uses electrical energy. However, it does not consider the capital and operating costs that relate to mechanized equipment. As a result, the concept of tons per machine-shift has emerged as an accepted measure of shift productivity. The only appropriate measure that encorporates the productivity of men and machines is an economic one. The output is the tonnage per shift and the impact is the cost per shift. [ ] This is simply the inverse of the cost per ton. In addition, much flexibility is available in allo¬cating costs to the three categories. This adds a level of intangibility to the measure. The amount of information needed to obtain all of the required costs is appreciable compared to the simple matter of counting tons and workers. Furthermore, financial information relating to production costs is closely held by mining companies, so historical statistics on economic productivity are not publicly available. To extend the concept further, consider the value of the tonnage produced, to obtain a dimensionless ($/$) measure of economic productivity.

The title of the paper which I have been asked to present is somewhat misleading it infers in fact that there is a definite coalbed height below which raps or canopies cannot be applied to electric face equipment. Although this may be so with regard to certain pieces of existing equipment under certain conditions, to date we do not have enough experience to determine this magic number. Therefore MESA is continuing to hold the line on the time frames stipulated in Section 75.1710-1 of the Mandatory Safety Standards - Underground Coal Mines, which at this point in time requires these protective structures in mining heights of 60 inches or more. In order to give you an idea why we are taking such a firm stand on this matter, I believe it is necessary to describe some of the background work that was done prior to promulgation of the regulations and to give a resume of our experience since the requirements have become effective. Initially MESA made field investigations of all underground mines to determine what the state of the art was in the use of cabs and canopies for protecting equip¬ment operators from falls of roof. These studies revealed that the application was basically in its infancy and what progress had been made was due to the impetus of the mine operators themselves. Manufacturers of electric face equip¬ment provided these structures only on the direct order from the mining company and built them to their specifications. In talking to the operators and the miners in mines where cabs or canopies were in use, it was the consensus that these structures did improve safety and that although originally there was some reluctance on the part; of the miners to work in the confines of a cab or canopy, mast would not work without them once they had been adapted to the equipment.

"In today’s fast paced, globally competitive world, reliability and machine uptime are of the utmost importance to a successful operation. Along with these targets more emphasis is being put on cost reduction and decreasing the environmental impact of the overall system. To achieve these goals, automatic lubricators and lubrication systems have been used in many industries for years and are now becoming a common tool in the mining industry as well. These systems are able to provide proper lubrication amounts at the proper times autonomously, helping to keep the machines running smoothly while minimizing the physical support required. Copper mines in the southwest have begun utilizing auto lubrication to avoid mistakes and unplanned shut downs on critical equipment. This paper will describe the engineering behind these products and review case histories where these tools have been successfully utilized in the mining industry. INTRODUCTION In a dirty, dusty, wet environment, where machine uptime is imperative, proper lubrication of bearings is the only way to survive. With the push for cost reduction and mines striving to lower their environmental impact and increase worker safety according to MSHA guidelines, the old lubrication practices have come under scrutiny. It is no longer encouraged or cost effective to have maintenance personal walk from point to point throughout the entire mine pumping a shot of grease into each bearing once per shift. Automatic lubricators and lubrication systems have been on the market for years but recently, as the market focus has changed and technology has developed, the use of these systems has begun to rise in the mining industry. Automatic lubrication systems can be as simple as a single point lubricator lubricating one (1) bearing or a more complex system lubricating numerous bearings. With system design, the automatic lubricator provides a preset amount of grease to a bearing at regular, predetermined intervals. The systems designed to lubricate more than one bearing contain grease pumps of some design and possibly PLC controllers which can be used to remotely adjust and monitor the system. As can be seen in Figure 1, the right amount of lubrication can be achieved much more reliably with automatic lubricators. Depending on application needs, the market now has products to fit almost every wish list. This paper is going to focus on the single point systems that are lower in cost but are still being effective."

INTRODUCTION The mining of gold commenced on the Witwatersrand in 1884, and reached a mature state by about 1910, when nearly 20 million metric tons were mined. Mining has continued on the central Witwatersrand, the area of the first mining, at a similar rate until recent years. As a result, well over 1 billion tons of gold mining wastes have been dumped along a line over 80 km long, centred on Johannesburg and stretching from Randfontein in the west to Nigel in the east. (see Figure 1). The population of this conurbation, which straddles the line of mining, has grown to about 5 million. In 1922 uranium was first discovered as a constituent of the ore (and thus of the wastes). Investigations in the 1940's revealed that values near Johannesburg were low, but that, at the western and eastern ends of the central Witwatersrand line, and in the new areas centred on the towns of Carletonville, Klerksdorp and Welkom up to 200 km from Johannesburg, values were adequate to permit uranium recovery. Commercial production commenced in 1952, and by 1979 over 100 000 tons of uranium oxide had been produced. There thus arises on the central Witwatersrand nearly 1,3 billion tons of slimes containing an average of about 0,005% uranium and about 1,8% FeS2. The material grading is about 70%-75µm, and the primary mineral is silica (over 85%). The material is contained in dams constructed hydraulically. A typical dam has an area of about 100 hectares and there are over 6000 ha under slimes dams in the area of concern. The treatment of these dams for uranium recovery commenced in 1977. The situation has thus arisen whereby potential uranium ores have unwittingly been dumped in significant quantities within a major metropolis over a period of nearly a century. The purpose of this note is to review the experience arising from the potential hazard over a considerable time.

A Mineração da Trindade (Samitri) is a major Brazilian iron ore producer. Founded in 1939, privately owned Samitri operates six mines with a total production capacity of 14.5 Mt/a (16 million stpy). The mines are located in southeastern Brazil in the state of Minas Gerais. They are operating in the iron ore quadrangle, Brazil's primary iron ore-producing region. In addition to iron ore production, Samitri has the capability to produce 350 kt/a (386,000 stpy) of ferruginous manganese ore from two mines, also located in the iron ore quadrangle. Historically, about 70% of Samitri's production of lump ore, sinter feed and pellet feed is exported. Destinations include Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Trinidad and Tobago, China, Turkey and the United States. Alegria Mine In September 1989, Samitri started a new processing plant to treat itabirite, a low-grade iron ore. The goal of the plant was to produce sinter feed (coarse fraction) and pellet feed (fine fraction). Primary separation of sinter feed from pellet feed was accomplished with conventional vibrating screens making a 0.4-mm (40-mesh) cut. The screen oversize was stockpiled as sinter feed. The undersize was deslimed with hydrocyclones and upgraded by conventional froth flotation. Resulting pellet feed grades ranged from 3% to 3.5% Si02. A change in pellet feed requirements by Samarco Mineração SA, a Samitri subsidiary, called for Si02 levels below 1 % and increased production levels. Moreover, market demands called for a change in sinter feed size distributions. Unfortunately, lower pellet feed Si02 levels could not be achieved with the existing process. This was because of the presence of 35% +0.15 mm (+100 mesh) in flotation feed. Flowsheet development. Laboratory and pilot-plant studies conducted at Samitri's research facility found that to achieve lower Si02 levels, the +0.15 mm (+100 mesh) in flotation feed must be kept below 5% to 10%.
