The estimation of local recoveries, such as the local recovered tonnage of ore and its corresponding grade at a given cutoff grade, is an important problem in a selective mining operation. Multigaussian kriging provides a simple solution to this specific problem. The solution is also complete in the sense that local recoveries are estimated together with their estimation variances. It is thus possible to assess confidence limit intervals on the estimated recoveries. Multigaussian kriging has been applied to the Jerritt Canyon deposit in a most realistic situation. The various steps of the estimation procedure are presented in detail and the potential of the method is demonstrated in view of the results. The obtained results show that the estimated recoveries are in good agreement with the actual recoveries and the actual estimation errors are correctly predicted by the estimation variances. Multigaussian kriging thus appears as a useful and fully operationable tool for the mining industry.

"Top-down wall construction was selected to excavate the tunnel portal headwall areas of the ORB East End Crossing tunnel. Benefits included an expedited construction schedule realized by staging excavation and rock support with development of temporary construction access roads. Rock mass properties, proximity to right-of-way lines, and blasting impacts were considered to design suitable lift heights, intermediate bench locations, and permanent ground support systems to provide supported permanent excavations. Carbonate rock formations contained adverse subsurface geotechnical features including solution cavities, clay seams, weathered joints, pinnacled rock, and boulders, which were addressed by flexibility in design. The resulting over-break conditions and long-term water infiltration issues required economic design solutions. This paper discusses the unique considerations required during design of top-down tunnel portal headwalls excavated in carbonate rock formations including temporary excavation and permanent ground support systems which provided flexibility for unforeseen over-break, minimized construction delays, and provided long-term stability. PROJECT BACKGROUND The East End Crossing is an approximate 8-mile highway connection of the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges East End Crossing (ORBEE) project. Currently under construction, this connection will link State Road 265 in Indiana with the Gene Snyder Freeway in Kentucky to form an outer loop bypassing the Louisville-Southern Indiana metropolitan area. This highway project features a 2,510-foot long, three-span cable-stayed bridge over the Ohio River, and a 1,680-foot long tunnel. The project, being managed by the Indiana Finance Authority and Indiana Department of Transportation, is scheduled to open to traffic by the end of 2016. The new twin three-lane tunnel under the historic Drumanard Estate requires steep cut excavations for approach and tunnel portal walls on the order of 60 feet deep through overburden soil and carbonate bedrock formations. This paper focuses on the design considerations for the permanent support of the top-down wall construction of the tunnel portal headwalls and approach retaining walls."

Nearly every community in the United States is dependent on aggregate (sand, gravel, and crushed stone) resources to build and maintain its infrastructure. Unfortunately, developing aggregate resources to meet societal needs causes environmental impacts. Most environmental impacts associated with aggregate mining are benign. Extracting aggregate seldom produces acid mine drainage or other toxic effects commonly associated with mining of metallic or energy resources. The most obvious environmental impact of aggregate mining is the conversion of land use, most likely from undeveloped or agricultural land use, to a hole in the ground. This major impact is accompanied by loss of habitat, noise, dust, blasting effects, erosion, sedimentation, and changes to the visual scene. Some of the impacts are short-lived, and most are easy to predict and easy to observe. Most impacts can be controlled, mitigated, or kept at tolerable levels and can be restricted to the immediate vicinity of the aggregate operation by employing responsible operating practices and available technology. The intensity of environmental impacts generated as a result of mining are determined in large part by the geologic characteristics of aggregate deposits (geomorphology, geometry, and physical and chemical properties). Mining deposits that are too thin, or contain too much unsuitable material, results in the generation of excessively large mined areas and large amounts of waste material. Mining aggregate can lead to serious environmental impacts in some situations. Some geologic environments such as active stream channels, slide-prone areas, and karst terrain are dynamic and respond rapidly to outside stimuli including aggregate mining. Some geomorphic areas and (or) ecosystems underlain with aggregate serve as habitat for rare or endangered species. Similarly, some geomorphic features are themselves rare examples of geologic phenomena or processes. Mining aggregate might be acceptable in some of these areas, but should be conducted only after careful consideration, and then only with extreme prudence. Failure to do so can lead to serious, long-lasting, and irreversible environmental consequences, either in the vicinity of the site or at locations distant from the site. Environmental impacts caused by irresponsible aggregate mining can compromise mining in an entire region.

Personnel from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health integrated the results of studies from a seismic tomographic survey, a finite-difference analysis, laboratory measurements of compression wave (ultrasonic) velocities in rock cores, and site geology to evaluate the use of seismic tomography for identifying induced pressures in an underground pillar at the Edgar Mine, Idaho Springs, CO. The key findings were that (1) the seismic tomograms showed that seismic velocities in rock adjacent to mine openings were low, (2) a difference tomogram in which in situ stresses on the east and west sides of the slot were compared showed that velocities increased west of the slot but decreased east of the slot, (3) geologic features (rock types and a fault) identified through geologic mapping were recognizable in the seismic tomograms, (4) ultrasonic velocity measurements on the rock cores agreed with seismic velocity measurements in the tomograms, and (5) results from a finite-difference analysis compared well to the seismic tomograms west of the slot but not east of the slot. The significance of this research is that seismic tomography is a useful tool for determining relative stress in underground pillars.

As environmental laws and regulations become more complex and the economic cost of non-compliance becomes greater, periodic assessment of environmental compliance, identification of potential liability and implementation of any necessary remedial action should be a standard part of the operational methods of any successful business. The title of this paper "Environmental Audits, A Shield, A Sword or A Trojan Horse?" is intended to draw attention to the fact that environmental audits can be used positively to shield a business operations from actual or potential environmental liability; can be used proactively as a 'sword" in both a marketing context ("do business with us because we conduct our business safely and professionally?) and as a mechanism for developing positive relationships with environmental regulators; and, used negatively, as a "Trojan horse", by developing information which those same environmental regulators (or the public) use in an enforcement context against your business or that of your clients. This paper will discuss the concept of environmental audits in general; the pros and cons of conducting the same; and the role of the attorney, as part of the "audit" team, to insure, to the greatest extent possible, that the audit process is productive from both a managerial and legal perspective.

Rehabilitation of sites contaminated by oil products and chlorinated organic compounds is a costly task which affects the planning of urban and infrastructure development. An integrated approach based on the non-invasive geophysical technology is utilized for subsurface characterization of contaminated land. In this approach the localized information, provided by chemical analysis of soil samples collected from bore-holes, is used for the calibration of the geophysical data. This information is subsequently extrapolated to the area under investigation by combining it with the geophysical results, providing thus information about pollution accumulation, contaminants? flow and pollution sources. Two case studies are presented from sites contaminated by heavy metals (Venice, Italy) and oil products (Athens, Greece). Resistivity, electromagnetic and seismic methods were used in this approach. Namely, electrical tomography, electromagnetic mapping, ground penetrating radar (GPR), multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) and seismic refraction experiments were conducted. In Italy, the sections from the multichannel analysis of surface waves imaged successfully a buried channel where the pollution is concentrated. Preliminary results are also discussed from the geophysical survey in Greece where the thickness of the oil phase located on top of the water layer is 60 cm.

High purity, high brightness limestone deposits in the San Bernardino Mountains and Mojave Desert region occur in upper Paleozoic carbonate rocks which are part of an upper Precambrian and Paleozoic sequence that unconformably overlies crystalline basement. The Paleozoic strata are divided into formations and members, and correlated with strata of the inner Cordilleran miogeocline. The region has been affected by multiple Mesozoic intrusive, contact, and regional metamorphic events. Structure is complex, and includes polyphase Mesozoic folding and thrusting, and complex Cenozoic structures. The area continues to be seismically active. High brightness (white), high purity crystalline limestone deposits are uncommon because their formation is dependent on several geologic processes which include; 1) depositional environment, 2) contact and or regional metamorphism, 3) folding and faulting, 4) uplift and erosion, and 5) preservation through geologic time. The complex geologic history of the San Bernardino Mountains and Mojave Desert region has allowed the formation of several large high brightness, high purity limestone deposits which are currently being mined or will be mined in the future. Specialty Minerals, Inc. (formerly Ptizer), Pluess-Staufer (California), Inc. and Partins Limestone, Inc. produce high brightness, high purity limestone from several quarries in the San Bernardino Mountains. These active mines combined with undeveloped deposits controlled by Pluess-Staufer in the San Bernardino Mountains, New York Mountains, and Bristol Mountains in the Mojave area, contain proven and or indicated reserves sufficient to sustain production through the 21st century Detailed geologic mapping, intimate knowledge of stratigraphy, recognition of complex structures, sampling, drilling and assay data, are proven tools in the discovery and delineation of high brightness, high purity limestone deposits in the San Bernardino Mountains and Mojave Desert region of southern California.

It is the task of this portion of today's session on the new meaning of regional tectonics in the search for ore districts to discuss known interactions of tectonics and ore deposition in the 'new global tectonics' context. I will speak particularly about known applications of the recent tectonic advances to ore finding. Stated yet another way, it's getting on in time toward the "put up or shut up" stage-¬and I would not be here if I thought that the new tectonics were not an effective present matrix for ore finding. Before delving into specific geologic relationships--and I propose to discuss mainly the evolution of an idea which may reveal the presence of a major copper deposit on mainland Mexico--I must note that there have been no published accounts that I know of which assert that a particular discovery has been made soley and specifically because of an interpretation based upon mechanisms directly linked to sea floor spreading or plate tectonics. It is nonetheless true" that several major exploration efforts are based upon such interpretations, and, as is normal when exploration ideas are involved, one does not wish to call attention to an advantageous position in a highly competitive business. Little might be expected to have been announced in so fast-moving and potentially lucrative an area. Another point which needs to be made is that people such as B. S. Butler (1933), Billingsley and Locke (1935 and 1941), Harrison Schmitt (1935), and more recently Mayo (1958) have been working for decades with the tectonic expressions of the emergent tectonics without recog¬nition of the driving forces or the unifying tectonic concepts

Heightened environmental consciousness has resulted in the development of various international accords dealing with natural resource management. This international awareness is now being translated into regional and local initiatives that proactively implement collaborative environmental management programs. One such program was recently initiated in northern Chile in recognition of the interconnection of Andean salars. Cooperative efforts between industry, governmental agencies and academic professionals have resulted in the implementation of simultaneous environmental monitoring of flora and fauna in the salars of northern Chile. This coordinated effort is leading to an improved understanding of the migratory patterns of South American fauna, as well as improved access to an expanded database for the multiple user groups associated with the Andean salars. The El Abra Mine is actively participating in these coordinated monitoring efforts.

The dissociation (ionisation) constant of hydrogen cyanide, pKa(HCN), has been measured by high precision glass electrode potentiometric titrations in saline solutions containing up to 5 mol/L sodium chloride. The dissociation constant of water that is necessary for the calculation of pKa(HCN) has also been measured. In saline solution, and in contrast to literature values, pKa(HCN) changes considerably at both high and low ionic strengths as a result of changes in activity coefficients. In addition an equation is presented, using literature data, that describes the variation of pKa(HCN) with temperature up to 150°C. The significance of the changes in pKa(HCN) for optimising the pH of alkaline cyanide gold recovery streams is briefly discussed.

The Communaute Urbaine de Montreal is currently involved in construction of the South Interceptor which consists of 53 kilometers (33 miles) of 1,800 mm (6.0 ft) to 5,400 mm (18.0 ft) diameter tunnels for the purpose of collecting, storing, and delivering sanitary and combined sewage to the treatment plant. Work is divided into ten separate contracts; nine of which have already been bid. The purpose of this paper is to describe construction activities that have been performed through the end of 1986 with emphasis on a general layout of facilities, a summary of subsurface conditions, and brief descriptions of actual construction activities for the six contracts where tunneling has been performed. All projects are being excavated with tunnel boring machines.

ABOUT BENTONITE TUNNELLING Much has been written and many learned papers given on this subject whose generic term is Slurry Tunnelling. This paper is about the particular form of slurry tunnelling known as the Bentonite Tunnelling System. This method. of tunnelling was invented by J.V. Bartlett of consulting engineers, Mott Hay and Anderson in 1964. The general principles are incorporated in British Patent No. 1083322. It was not until the early 1970's that serious experimental work was started to prove the technical feasibility of the process. In the U.K. in 1971 Edmund Nuttall Limited started on an experimental length of 3.8m diameter tunnel at New Cross in London. In Germany at about the same time Wayss and Freytag were starting on a 3.7m diameter collector sewer tunnel in Hamburg. In Japan early slurry tunnelling work was carried out in the 1960's. In the early 1970's a large number of slurry tunnels of various diameters were carried out in that country. This paper is being presented at a time when this system of tunnelling has become an accepted method throughout the developed world. As a result of the work carried out so far there is now a large amount of data existing regarding the effects on the ground in the immediate area of the tunnel, settlement at the surface and the ability of the system to cope with ground varying from clays to coarse gravels and containing large erratics such as granite boulders. Pittsburgh No. 8 coal, cleaned by conventional froth flotation, was oxidized in a 2-L Parr stirred bench-top autoclave. Autoclave tests were carried out for up to 5 hrs under the following conditions: 150 to 225ºC, 60 to 500 psi 02 and 15 to 60 g of coal per 600 mL of distilled water. The oxidation of coal was evaluated by measuring the total acidic group formed on the surface of the coal and by measuring the adsorption (under standard conditions) of calcium ion from a solution. The degree of oxidation of the coal increased continuously, without much leveling off, with increasing oxygen pressure. With increasing temperature, the oxidation of the coal increased sharply between 150 to 175ºC and then leveled off above 175 °C. The adsorption of calcium was >3% on coal oxidized under the most favorable conditions. The adsorption of calcium on coal increased sharply with increasing equilibrium pH. The loss in Btu was found to be sensitive to oxidation temperature. This study concluded that the optimum oxidation of coal is achieved over 3 hrs at high oxygen pressures (e.g., 500 psi) at ~170ºC. This study also concluded that, when measured in terms of calcium adsorption, Btu loss and reaction time, the oxidation achieved in an autoclave is far superior to that achieved in a fluidized bed.

The industrial practice of froth flotation for upgrading the quality of fine coal is a relatively complex, expensive, and inefficient process when compared to the coarse- and intermediate-size coal cleaning circuits. The differences in cost and process efficiency can be attributed mainly to the lower equipment throughput, the added cost of flotation reagents, and the fact that flotation is typically a manually operated process susceptible to fluctuating feed characteristics that influence the overall operating efficiency. The emphasis in recent years has been on improving the flotation process efficiency and lowering the cost per clean ton. This has been achieved by larger flotation cell designs, implementation of flotation reagent evaluation programs, and improved process instrumentation and control. These developments are reviewed along with other current coal flotation practices.

INTRODUCTION As practiced today, longwall mining is a mechanical version of an established mining system. The equipment for longwall mining consists of four basic units: roof supports, face conveyor, winning or mineral-getting ma¬chine, and stage-loader conveyor. The system mines relatively thin slices of mineral across a predetermined face length in a virtually continuous sequence. As the winning machine cuts, the mineral is loaded automatically onto the face conveyor. In turn, the face conveyor is pushed over into the newly cut track by hydraulic rams attached to the conveyor and the roof supports. The roof supports then are lowered individu¬ally from the roof, advanced to the repositioned con¬veyor, and reset to the roof. At the end of the pass, the longwall cutter is pushed over, and a slice is taken in the opposite direction, so the system repeats itself. Fig. I illustrates a typical longwall mining system. The principle behind the longwall mining system is that the roof is supported only immediately adjacent to the worked seam, keeping the blocks of immediate roof clamped securely from the face to the rear of the sup¬ports. At the rear of the supports, the roof is allowed to fall and break up, with the swell of the broken material eventually establishing an equilibrium in the strata be¬hind the mined area. Fig. 2 illustrates the principle of longwall support. There are two distinct types of longwall mining. The longwall retreating system is the most common in the United States, South Africa, and Australia. The longwall advancing system is the most common in the re¬maining industrialized countries such as Britain, Ger¬many, Poland, and the Soviet Union. The longwall retreating system comprises a mining panel, where the roadways that form the head entry (end at which mineral is delivered from the face con¬veyor to a stage-loader conveyor) and the tail entry are predriven before the longwall units starts production. In the longwall advancing system, the longwall unit makes the head and tail entries as the face advances, utilizing various techniques to prevent the entries from being destroyed as they are left in a consolidating gob area. Fig. 3 illustrates the comparative approaches of the longwall retreating and advancing operations. "INTRODUCTION Freeport-McMoRan is a leading international natural resources company that operates large, long-lived, geographically diverse assets with significant proven and probable reserves of copper, gold, molybdenum, cobalt, oil and natural gas. Freeport-McMoRan is the world’s largest publicly traded copper producer and largest producer of molybdenum. The Sierrita mine is an open pit truck and shovel operation from which copper and molybdenum are produced. An important key to Sierrita’s success lies in their ability to realize their plans in the field. In certain circumstances, the mine plans are not achieved, and the operation fails to meet its targets which is an issue revealed in reconciliation reports. This technical session discusses the methodologies and procedures used at Sierrita to monitor the implementation of the mine plans, measure the performance of the operation and reduce the variance between plan and actual. Ensuring the operation stays on target is vital so mine productivity and profitability can attain its maximum potential. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Sierrita mining complex is located in Pima County, approximately 20 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona as shown in Figure 1. The first mining claims at Sierrita date back to the late 1800s while underground mining activities started in the early 1900s. However, open pit development of Sierrita began more than 50 years ago to become the modern mining complex it is today. In 2009, Freeport-McMoRan purchased the adjacent Twin Buttes copper mine, providing significant synergies in the Sierrita minerals district. This venture included the potential for expanded mining activities, operations growth for mining copper and molybdenum, and reclamation activity. It should be noted that in addition to copper and molybdenum, the Sierrita mine produces rhenium which is a rare and highly value metal. The ore deposit contains oxide and sulfide mineralization. The oxide ore is delivered to the leach process while the sulfide ore is routed to the crusher and mill circuit 4,700 jobs on Arizona’s economy Freeport-McMoRan partners with the communities near Sierrita to provide programs that contribute to their sustainability"
