Underground mining is a very complicated and complex industrial activity. The uncertain and, in most cases, the incomplete knowledge of the geological and mineralogical nature of the deposits can cause unforeseen difficulties. For a safe and uninterrupted operation, in addition to good planning and scheduling, reliable and up-to-date monitoring and control of all processes and conditions become necessary. Today, this is even more important in view of increasingly difficult working conditions, poorer grades, and more complex and expensive machinery. In short, large capital investment and higher risk of financial losses are involved in modern-day mining operations. Monitoring and control of the underground mining process has become a very complex and difficult task in itself. Many different systems are available, and the correct choice .is of utmost importance from both the economic and safety points of view. This chapter will deal with aspects of underground production monitoring and control. There are, however, many other areas of equal importance which are covered in an excellent manner in a hand- book by Olaf (1976) on monitoring and control of underground operations.

INTRODUCTION Tens of deposits in' coal basins of Western and Eastern Siberia are being open-mined with the technology of overburden rehandling into the mined out space of pits by excavators - draglines. This technology is preferred due to the high productive Russian equipment, comparatively low cost, and relatively small Influence exerted on the environment. The basic tendency of the last decades is the aspiration for enlarging the sphere of the' technology application for development of gentle and steeply dipping seams with the use of blast destruction of overburden and with combined winning of loose alluviums and rock partings. Complex technological schemes with multiple rehandling are widely used. In addition to it, stripping workings, intermediate storage of mineral resources, placing of transport dumps, and engineering construction can be realized with the use of draglines. More than ten of dragline faces are simultaneously exploited in some pits, and the rehandling coefficient ranks from 0.1 to 8. Here, conditions of winning and placing (position of a face and existing dump) are varying in space and time; this leads to the necessity of reconsidering the order for conduction of works (schemes) within the current designing. By now, in order to this, it is required to realize complex engineering calculations by graph-analytical methods and definite experience. The need is available for automatization of this process by creation of the corresponding software. The software is to: • Orient on the active pits and use information on the existing geology, equipment, and situation in mine. • Calculate the existing schemes more operative and on a higher qualitative level to model their development in a pit space with parameter optimization. • Predict situations demanding to change the existing technology for mining operations and recommend optimal technological schemes. METHODOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS FOR MODELING The problem is not new, it has more than fifty year-old history of creating mathematical models algorithms, and programs in Russia, Ukraine, USA, Canada. Australia and other countries with the developed mining branch. Conventionally, all population of programs can be divided into three groups depending on goal and interval of prediction: • Long-term programs used in designing and intended for substantiation of the nine capacity, selection of mining system, establishment of limits for applying the technology of overburden rehandling. The rock laterite was first discovered and described in the State of Kerala, India in 1800 A.D. by Francis Buchanan. It had been used here, and elsewhere in India, for many centuries as a building stone, but in Buchanan's time it was not known that some of these laterites were highly aluminous and could be processed to produce alumina. After World War I India started searching for bauxite reserves with a minimum grade of at least 50% A12O3. By 1960, it was estimated that India had a potential reserve of 245 million tonnes of bauxite, about 10% of which was in the "Proved" category. Subsequent geological exploration now reveals that India has an overall resource of more than 2 billion tonnes of aluminium ore, not all of it bauxite, as defined by earlier geologists. In this paper, the geology, resources and distribution of bauxite and aluminium ore throughout India are described. The generalised stratigraphy, typical laterite and bauxite profiles and summary of the resource position are shown in the attached Tables 1 to 8. It is generally agreed that a tropical to sub-tropical climate, intermittent wet and dry season, good permeability of country rock and suitable drainage, as well as physiographic and ground water conditions are important in the development of bauxite.

Reviewing the development of resin-in-pulp (RIP) technology for the extraction of gold in the world, especially in South Africa and USSR, and the chemistry of interaction between aurocyanide ions and anion-exchange resins. RIP benchtest and pilot plant investigations show that the resin of the weak-base and strong-base can absorb gold in the cyanide pulp and gold can be eluted from the strong-base resin by electro-elution. The possibility of future application of RIP technology in China fa also briefly discussed.

Substantial progress has been made over the last ten years in the development of uniform national and international standards covering the definition, estimation and public reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves. Agreement between the major participating countries has been reached, which include the requirement that a Competent Person prepares and approves publication of mineral resources and reserves. Most national regulatory organizations have accepted the new standards and have included them in the rules that must be followed by mining companies operating under their jurisdiction. These developments are the result of a concerted effort on the part of professional societies, national regulatory agencies, international organizations, and many dedicated individuals. The historical development of these standards is summarized in this paper. Accepted definitions of mineral resources and mineral reserves are discussed, as well as the definition and role of the Competent Person. Additional effort is needed before the international standards are fully understood, accepted and followed by mining companies, regulatory agencies, the investment community and the general public. Steps being taken toward development of a Mineral Reserves International Reporting Code Template (International Template) that will be available for all countries to use in deriving their specific country reporting codes, are outlined

In recent years, there has been an increasing use of two-pass tunnel lining system consisting of segmental unbolted expandable precast concrete initial lining and cast-in¬place concrete final lining in the United States. Used so far in soft ground tunneling performed under free air, it often includes a waterproofing or gasproofing membrane placed between the initial and final linings. This paper describes the utilization of this two-pass system for an extension of the Baltimore Metro, constructed in part under compressed air. It offers a description of the extension project, known as Section C; addresses the tunnel lining selection process and the design of the lining elements; examines the effect of the adopted lining system and tunneling technique on the design of the project's major structural components; and describes design modification instructions in order to accommodate constantly changing field conditions.

Coal exploration may be defined as the acquisition of data necessary to define and acquire a block of coal which can be mined at a profit. Unlike ore minerals, coal resources are widespread and relatively abundant with supply exceeding demand in almost every case. Thus simple discovery of coal is generally not enough. The chemical and physical variability of individual coal seams, the capital intensive nature of coal mine development, and the changing patterns of utilization require that a multiphase, three-dimensional evaluation be made of each potential reserve. Factors which must be investigated include not only the quantity and quality of the coal but also the geologic, hydrologic, and engineering characteristics of the seam and its surrounding strata. Acquisition of property to provide a secure base for exploration and mine development is equal in importance to the geologic and engineering programs. The successful development of a coal reserve requires that control of coal and, in the case of a strip mine, the surface be in the form of contiguous blocks of sufficient size to support mining.

"A study has been undertaken at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (MS&T) limestone Experimental Mine to determine new fans set up and wiring options.to install additional mine ventilation capacity. Selection for main fans has been undertaken according to the mine’s required performance specifications and fan characteristics. Available fans for ventilating the mine are Joy and Alphair axial fans each of 24 kW each and two Spendrup booster fans of 12 kW each. The installation of main mine fans on the surface and underground entails numerous considerations. Design of a ventilation network for the Experimental Mine incorporating surface and booster fans has been accomplished using Ventsim Visual program software. The ventilation network has been separated into two segregated parts. A main surface fan and a booster fan have been used in each segregated part of the network. The mine has had a vane axial Joy fan in place for many years. The Alphair 4800 VAX 1800 full blade adjustable pitch vane axial fan was selected and installed as the other surface fan and eventual replacement for the Joy fan. Main surface fans have been connected individually to booster fans in series. The Alphair main surface fan has been installed vertically. Four different wiring options and related cost estimations for addition of the new main fans to the ventilation network have been considered. The analysis resulted in an innovative steel frame design used to allow the fans, when necessary, to be moved to the side of the shaft so that blast pressures do not damage the blades. INTRODUCTION Main fans are the heart of a mine’s ventilation network and play a key role in supplying required airflow (Haghighat, 2014). The Missouri S&T Experimental Mine has been developed in uniform limestone with few stratigraphic features. The mine floor is approximately horizontal and water drains well. A study has been carried out on MS&T Experimental Mine. Selection of main fans has been undertaken according to the mine’s required performance specifications and fan characteristics. Ventsim Visual computer simulation has been used to assist in design of the ventilation network. Wiring circuits, fan foundations and flexibility have been considered as the three main parameters for surface fan installation at the Experimental Mine. Two surface and two underground wiring options and three surface set up options and related cost estimates for the new surface fan system were investigated. Frequent use of explosives in the mine occurs throughout each year. Flexibility in changing the position of a surface fan is important. A number of options have been considered for the location of a vertical main fan positioned on the upcasting shaft. The mine is used for a variety of purposes and flexibility has a high priority amongst design considerations."

Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and much of it is "real time," changing rapidly as internal and external conditions evolve. As corporations buy and sell assets and reengineer their staff, the structures and tools that were used to understand these data are lost. The lack of an integrated approach makes the profitability of metallurgical plants lag behind that of other industries despite technical advances that have occurred in recent years. This results in significant deterioration in the ability to maintain a "smart” operation. The solution is to use the sophisticated new tools built for the Internet so as to leverage information in a familiar browser format that people can use and understand. Combining real-time infrastructure with portal technology is becoming an accepted methodology. This paper introduces real-time portals and team sites to support decision making by work- groups which require both real-time and documentary information from manufacturing assets, vendors, head office and the Internet. Workers get insight from the overall process effectiveness index based on key variables such as losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency and rate of quality. Real-time portals and smart clients are part of any real-time performance management (RtPM) solution. Three case studies in large metallurgical complexes are presented. The Lucerne Valley limestone mining district is in the San Bernardino Mountains, one of the major ranges in the Transverse Range Province of southern California. Several large limestone mining operations are present along the north range front in Lucerne Valley, and the area is one of the premier limestone mining districts in the country. Resources are contained in Paleozoic carbonate rocks that are part of a thick late Precambrian and Paleozoic sequence that uncomformably overlies crystalline basement. The district has been affected by multiple episodes of metamorphism and deformation, as well as by a complex sequence of late Cenozoic structural events. Detailed studies, however, have demonstrated that these rocks can be divided into formations correlatable with late Precambrian to Permian strata of the Cordilleran miogeocline. The district is the leading producer of white, high-purity calcium-carbonate products in western North America. Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc. mines and processes high-purity white limestone from extensive deposits, and is one of the largest producers of high-quality limestone fillers and extenders in the western United States. Major factors influencing the genesis of economic carbonate deposits in the district include depositional environment, post-depositional processes such as diagenesis, dolomitization and/or silicification, regional and/or contact metamorphism and associated intrusive activity, faulting, folding, uplift and erosion, and preservation from erosion. Regional geologic studies, detailed geologic mapping, intimate knowledge of stratigraphy, and recognition of complex structural relationships have proven to be invaluable tools in the discovery of high quality calcium carbonate deposits in the district.

This paper offers an algorithm to determine the optimal panel size with the objective of minimizing the overall stripping cost. The approach is presented both in analytical form for regular layers of coal and overburden, and in graphical form for the cases of irregular and multiple coal seams. When the optimal panel width needs to be changed due to some circumstance, we prove in general that increasing the panel width is better than reducing it in both economics and operational efficiency.

Reduction in the recovery time required and improvements in safety during a longwall face move have compelled coal mine operators to examine and use pre-driven longwall recovery rooms. The recovery entry is developed at the longwall stop position and supported ahead of time so that the required combinations of standing and internal sup-ports can be installed before the longwall face approaches. A calibrated three-dimensional finite element model, developed in conjunction with an underground test area, provided the critical components and design principals for a comprehensive parametric study. The study indicates that vertical, horizontal, and shear stresses concentrated on the outby abutment pillar corner of the recovery room resulting in deformations in the immediate roof above the primary roof support anchorage level. The results of the numerical model and field site observations indicated that the combination of the internal bolting system and the standing concrete supports are critical for the successful and safe extraction of the longwall equipment. Cable supports installed at and angle over the pillars can help stabilize the disturbed zone above the adjacent fender and outby pillars, however; standing supports are required in most sedimentary roof conditions to increase stability and assure a safe longwall extraction.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc. (FMI) will soon begin copper production from the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits near Safford, Arizona. Ore reserves total 615 M tons grading 0.36% copper, predominantly as chrysocolla. Copper extraction will be by leaching with sulfuric acid. Fluor Canada Ltd. provided EPCM services to design an ore handling and conventional SWEW facility capable of producing a nominal 240 million pounds per year of cathode copper. The ore handling facility will process 114,000 tons per day of ore through three-stage, open-circuit crushing followed by agglomeration and product placement on the permanent leach pad. Stacking of ore on the leach pad will utilize Terra Nova Technologies' "Super Portable" mobile stacking system. The stacking system fleet consists of 13 self- propelled, crawler-mounted mobile conveyor units, each with 72-inch-wide belting and a capacity of 6,800 tons per hour, including ten 250-foot-long portable conveyors, a horizontal feed conveyor, a 285-foot-long horizontal conveyor and a 220-foot-long radial stacker. PROJECT BACKGROUND Project History The Safford Leach Project is located in the Safford mining district in Graham County, Arizona, approximately eight miles northeast of the town of Safford and 170 miles east of Phoenix. The 3,360-acre property is located in the Gila River Valley, immediately south of the Gila Mountains, at elevations between approximately 3,000 and 5,400 feet above sea level. The Safford Leach Project is comprised of the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits, two of five known copper ore deposits in the Safford mining district.

EPA's Office of Solid Waste (OSW) is developing a program, under Subtitle D of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) to regulate the management of non-coal mining wastes. In May 1988. OSW produced a "Strawman", which is a working document that is precursor to a proposed rule. OSW has been working closely with environmental groups, industry, and States to solicit comments and feedback on the mining waste program. OSW currently plans to release a second "Strawman" in early 1990. A proposed rule is tentatively scheduled to be published in the spring of 1991.

INTRODUCTION At some point in the design and development stage of a mineral venture, the assay laboratory building, its interior layout, and major pieces of analytical equipment must be specified for construction or purchase. Even the most experienced chemist would have difficulty in proposing useful specifications without a good deal of investigation into the kinds of analytical tasks that the laboratory will be expected to address, the probable workload, and the operating time constraints. This chapter will provide a logical approach to laboratory design that starts with such an investigation. Specific examples throughout the chapter are drawn from the author's tenure as Chief Chemist at Barrick Mercur Gold Mines, Mercur, Utah, from 1982 to 1985. It is necessary to understand the nature of a modern production laboratory, and to recognize that its operations bear more resemblance to its parent processing plant than to a research, teaching, or custom analytical laboratory. The assay lab is a processing facility unto itself, where samples and reagents are the raw materials, and assay results are the final product. Its most efficient operating mode is as an assembly line, treating samples in a nearly continuous flow. Nevertheless , there are important differences between the lab and the process plant. The products - assays - are individually unknown quantities until they are "produced.' This can vastly complicate quality control compared to the process plant. Capital costs are general 1 y small compared to the plant, but the ratio of operating costs to capital costs for a laboratory is often very much higher than for the plant. This is due to the labor intensive nature of analytical work. For instance, during Fiscal Year 1984 at Barrick Mercur Gold Mines, labor costs for the laboratory staff represented about five percent of the total labor budget, while the laboratory building and equipment represented only about six-tenths of one percent of the original start-up capital. Failure to recognize both the similarities and differences between laboratory and plant operations is the foremost cause of difficulty encountered in designing a laboratory. The

PROJECT OVERVIEW As the sun-bronzed San Diego students strolled casually to class, mining crews from Atkinson Construction were working only 9 meters below the surface. The330 meter long, 11.3 meter diameter squat ellipse NATM tunnel is part of the9.3 kilometer Mission Valley East Extension Light Rail Transit (MVE-LRT) being constructed for the San Diego Metropolitan Transit Development Board (MTDB). The SDSU segment of the MVE-LRT was awarded to the Clark Construction Group, the parent company of Atkinson Construction for $82.7 million. URS CORP was the prime designer and Hatch Mott MacDonald performed the NATM tunnel design. The construction managers were Washington Infrastructure Services with Underground Construction Managers, EPC Consultants, and ILF Consultants. A NATM tunnel design was chosen as the most cost-effective way to minimize disruption of the university activities. The tunnel passes close to several buildings and directly below access roads, tennis courts and a baseball field. The NATM method of conventional mining uses shotcrete for ground support often reinforced with steel orplastic fibers, welded wire mesh and lattice girders. The tunnel runs from a cut and cover box up a 4.2% grade in a 217 meter radius left-hand curve with several spirals and ends at the underground station 330 meters away. The depth of cover varies from 16 meters near the west portal to nine meters at the station. The design called for a two-pass system with a primary lining of 300 mm shotcrete with lattice girders at 1 m centers and two layers of welded wire mesh. The lattice girders are used primarily for profile control and are not considered a structural element. The top heading was designed to be excavated in one of three excavation sequences depending on ground conditions and depth of cover. Production techniques of these minerals are part and parcel of the training that mining engineering educators must, and do, impart to their students. This paper deals with the basic mining engineering program required by all accredited engineering schools and the specific way the Pennsylvania Scare University presents and builds upon them. The manner in which these concepts provide the student with the necessary tools to function as a mining engineer in me realm of industrial minerals extraction is discussed.

Surface mining in arctic regions is characterized by many unique problems. Continuous and discontinuous permafrost (perennially frozen ground) occurs in most of the arctic and subarctic areas. Permafrost presents special problems of slope stability. Stability of permafrost depends on its temperature, moisture content, and material type. Permafrost slope fails due to solifluction, disturbance of ice-rich slopes, and liquefaction. Drilling and blasting of frozen ground present special problems. Depending on their degree of saturation with water, freezing soils and rocks have a number of important characteristics that affect blasting efficiency. Metals used in mining equipment and mining structures require special selection. At low temperatures, many steels lose most of their normal ductility and toughness (resistance to brittle fracture). This paper discusses engineering solutions to unique problems of arctic mining.

NIOSH is conducting research to reduce the silica dust exposure of workers at surface coal mines. One goal of this research is to evaluate the relationship between drilling parameters, rock strata and silica dust generation. This study involved measuring blast hole emission dust from a rotary drill rig which required sampling high concentration dust (>400 mg/m3) for silica content in a high velocity airstream. To measure dust initially, traditional sampling methods using personal sampling instruments were attempted in and around the shroud area of the drill with no success. Variations in the dust cloud concentrations under the shroud, the condition of the shroud and its orientation over the hole, and ambient air conditions prevented consistent and accurate dust measurements from being obtained. Amore consistent dust cloud is necessary for accurate measurements. An area of the drill’s dust collector system that consistently draws the emitted airborne dust from the hole is the collector tube. This tube connects the drill collector’s vacuum and dust filtration system to the shroud area. Assuming the collector system is working as designed, sampling from the collector tube would enable more consistent and accurate samples to be taken. However, current personal samplers are unable to sample in the concentrations and velocities experienced in the collector tube, so another method had to be devised. To achieve the desired results, an in-stack cascade cyclone was used. Preliminary field testing shows positive results.

Market data commonly perceived as being useful to industry for decision making include prices, production and trade quantities, production and transportation costs, stocks, customer's needs, and competitor's qualifications. Costs and factors affecting costs are particularly important in determining competitive positions and possible future prices. These costs include relative cost of production as well as cost experienced by the buyer in making the final product. Care must be taken to calculate costs in a consistent manner to achieve meaningful analyses.
