As surface minable coal is depleted, many operators look to high-wall mining to extend reserve life. Recent advances in highwall mining equipment have greatly improved productivity, clean coal recovery, and attainable penetration beneath the highwall. Somewhat lagging have been systematic design approaches for ensuring web pillar and overall highwall stability. This paper presents an overview of the design, planning, and field performance of a multiple-seam highwall mining application in southwest Wyoming. The safety and efficiency obtained to date is attributable to the careful geotechnical and operational planning described herein. Field confirmation of performance and suggestions for improvement are also discussed.

The Bond International Gold (BIG) Colosseum Gold Mine was discovered in 1865, but no recorded production occurred until the 1930's, with production approximately 19k9 (615 oz) of gold. The mine was closed in 1942 as a non-essential industry during World War II. The property was acquired by Dallhold Resources in mid 1986. Construction of a 1.1 million Mt carbon-in-pulp, cyanide mill started in November, 1986, and was completed in September, 1987. Minable reserves are estimated to be 9,560,831Mt (10,539,000St), with an average grade of 2.1 g/Mt (0.062 oz/st). This paper describes a general view of process flow and plant equipment, as well as a look at the maintenance and operational problems encountered in the fist six months of operation.

EMR's recently commissioned Pilot Plant in Fredericton, N.B. Canada, the latest and largest in the company's sequence of prototype and demonstration systems, is being used as a process development facility for mining clients worldwide. Fitted with two microwave reactors and 75 kW generators, this plant is designed as a two-stage continuous processor with a throughput in the 5-10 tpd range depending upon the material feedstream. This facility has been used principally to calcine pyrite and arsenopyrite gold concentrates although it can readily accommo­date carbonaceous materials as well as a wide range of other ore types. Engineering details of the plant and the results of the first nine months of operation are presented. The plant has proven very successful as an advanced process development facility as well as a basic production unit module.

Deep open-pit mines are becoming increasingly common in the highly mineralized arctic and sub-arctic regions. Air inversion is a frequent occurrence in these regions, and is exacerbated by complex geometry of the open pit and the surrounding natural topography of an open-pit mine. The resulting inversion cap is known to contribute to the degradation of air quality in the open pit, resulting in loss of production. This paper discusses the development and validation of a three-dimensional model that simulate the flow of air and the transport of gaseous contaminants in an arctic open-pit mine and the analyzes effect of the geometry of the mine and the slope angle of the pit on the contaminants profiles in the mine.

The froth flotation of coal, differing greatly from that of most minerals1-5, is not improved but rather impaired by temperatures higher than room temperature6-10 This phenomenon has long taunted us for an explanation. Gayle and Associates 8,9 reported the lack of relationship between their contact angle measurements and their flotation of American coals under various temperatures. Bailey and Whelan6 stated that the viscosity of flotation reagents, offering some clue for their flotation of British coals at low temperatures, could not be put forward as an explanation either in whole or in part for the effect of temperatures on coal-flotation. In this paper, a froth hypothesis is proposed to explain the flotation behavior of coals under various pulp temperatures. Test work involved the flotation of coals and the frothing of reagents.

Kaolin is an important industrial mineral because of its unique properties and low cost. Strictly defined, kaolin is the name given to a group of hydrous aluminum silicates of which kaolinite is the most common mineral (1). Through common usage the mineral, kaolinite, is called "kaolin" or "china clay". In 1972 over 4, 000, 000 tons of kaolin will be beneficiated and shipped by domestic producers. By far the largest user of kaolin is the paper industry which utilizes approximately 65 to 70 per cent of the total production. Kaolin is used in paper as a filler in the interstices of the sheet and as a coating to impart smoothness, gloss, brightness, and printability to the paper. The rubber industry is also a large user of kaolin where it is used as a filler because it adds strength, abrasion resistance, and rigidity to both natural and synthetic rubber goods. Kaolin is used as an extender in paints because it is chemically inert, has a high covering power, gives desirable flow properties, and is low in cost. In ceramics, kaolin is used in whitewares, tile, insulators, refractories, and in some face brick where a white color is desired. Kaolin is also used extensively in plastics as a filler in thermosetting and thermoplastic mixes to give smoother surfaces, a more attractive finish, good dimensional stability, and resistance to chemical attack. Many other process industries use kaolin as a filler, suspending medium, or for color improvement.

Surface dependent processes, such as froth flotation and flocculation, are important or potentially important techniques for combating some of the current major problems in coal preparation. In order to correctly apply or imporve a surface dependent process, it is of paramount importance to understand the interfacial phenomenon, especially the double layer properties, exhibited by the solid. The specific objective of this research was to determine the properties of the bituminous coal/liquid interface by an electrokinetic method, streaming potential, and to relate the findings, wherever possible, to the existing unit operations of froth flotation and flocculation. The electrokinetic properties of both the whole coal and its lithotypes were investigated. As part of the total investigation, the role played in the double layer by the reagents commonly employed in the surface dependent process was also established (1). These data will be presented at a latter date.

This paper describes the ventilation planning that was per- formed at the Barrick Gold Corporation, El lndio Mine. The El lndio Mine is located at an elevation of approximately 4,000 m in the Andes mountains east of the coastal city of La Serena, Chile. The ventilation planning program consisted of a detailed ventilation survey of the mine and the establishment of a correlated com- puter model. A series of network simulations were conducted to determine the optimum position, size, and configuration of new ventilation raises and main fan exhaust system. Modifications to existing mine infrastructure including; driving of drifts, slashing of airways, and positioning of ventilation controls were examined. Detailed costing information was developed to optimize the location of the new main exhaust raises and fan system. The final ventilation system is expected to increase the mine airflow from the existing 157 m=/s to over 315 mls. This increase was necessary to accommodate an expansion in mine production, diesel equipment utilization, and deeper mine development. Furthermore, the increased airflow was required because of the de-rating of diesel equipment and large air volumes necessary to dilute diesel exhaust at high elevation.

Most modern crushing and grinding facilities are automated to some degree. Some, of course, have a very minimum of automatic control whereas others utilize very complex control equipment. However, with very few exceptions, the re has not been a new basic control philosophy applied in this field in the past seven years. The philosophy has been broadened in scope and applied to larger plants, some of them with data logging and so- called computer control, but almost always the same tried and proven basic control philosophy is the basis for the control system. New types of control devices to better implement the automatic control have been developed and are continuing to be developed. These devices and their application will be explained and the advantages and disadvantages of each will be discussed. Automatic lubrication of plant equipment is most essential, but this paper will not cover these systems. The use of data logging and computer analysis of the data obtained is fairly recent and it is hoped that by careful analysis of this information that new and better basic control philosophy will be forthcoming. This paper will describe the basic philosophy applied in its simplest form to several types of crushing and grinding equipment, and it will describe how it is being expanded to more complex systems. Some of the economics with regard to first cost, return on investment and maintenance will be covered.

The leaching of gold and silver from various ores in ammoniacal solutions conta1mng various oxidants has been investigated. The samples tested included elemental gold, sulfidic as well as carbonaceous refractory ores, and tellurides. When pure elemental gold powders were used, the maximum amount of gold dissolved under the conditions studied was 16.3 ppm, 42.4 ppm, 82.0 ppm, and 152.2 ppm, respectively, at 140°C, 160° C, 180° C, and 200°C. Five different refractory ore samples were also tested. The recoveries of gold and silver from these refractory ores were typically 92% and 95%, respectively.

Two key strategies for a new generation of mining are developing domestic raw material production and doing so in an environmentally responsible way, according to presenters at the 83rd annual meeting of the SME Minnesota Section in Duluth (the 71st annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium). From technical sessions detailing how to build com-munity support, to a short course on international perspectives in iron ore mining and processing, the two-day meeting emphasized the potential of Minnesota state deposits and the importance of maintaining productive community relations both locally and globally. The meeting of more than 300 mining industry professionals began on April 20 with a traditional convocation celebrating the values of northern Minnesota. The accompanying tradeshow, with a record 131 booths, showed the speed and vigor of the economic rebound. Keynote speaker Scott Anderson, vice president and senior economist at Wells Fargo, stated the prevailing mood of the conference: ?Wow, what a difference a year makes.? With metal prices and sales up and heading higher, he said, it was clear that the production-centered economic recovery is reaching the mining and the minerals industry. However, Anderson sounded a few notes of caution. Serious threats to economic stability remain, including the burgeoning national de?cit, high unemployment and the still out-of-control foreclosure crisis. Overall, he predicted a below-average recovery and stressed the importance of developing a long-term business strategy.

The Magnetometsic Resistivity (MMR) method is based on the measurement of the low-level, low-frequency magnetic fields associated with non-inductive current flow in the earth. The traditional resistivity method maps the electrical properties of the earth by measuring the electric field caused by galvanic current flow between a pair of current electrodes. The MMR method differs from it in that the potential electrodes are replaced by a sensitive coil or magnetometer and a component of the magnetic field due to the current flow is recorded. The presence of an inhomogeneity redistributes the current flow which results in a perturbation of the electric field and, usually, of the magnetic field. The electric field immediately above a relatively conductive inhomogeneity must, by Ohm's Law, be smaller than that expected for a uniform earth. The current density in this region is also reduced but the current density within the inhomogeneity itself is enhanced so that the horizontal component of the magnetic field measured above the inhomogeneity is usually larger than that expected for a uniform earth. A method of interpretation using the magnetic anomaly was patented by Jakoskyl in 1933 but it met with little success at that time. Part of the problem was undoubtedly with the instrumentation, and only recently have robust instruments of sufficient sensitivity been developed2 and field data of good quality obtained. There are many common configurations of the potential and current electrodes in the resistivity method. Similarly, in the MMR method one or both current electrodes may be moved with the magnetometer, either horizontally or vertically ( in a bore-hole), or the current electrodes may be maintained in fixed positions and the magnetometer alone moved. Complying with reduced dust standards (i.e., less than 2.0 mg/m3) due to quartz levels that exceed 5 percent is presently a critical problem for many continuous mining sections. Results are presented of research which was performed to determine the factors causing high levels of respirable quartz dust and to identify the major contributors to operator exposure. It was found that the significant sources of quartz dust are the drilling of the roof and the mining of the roof, floor and rock bands. Both the miner and the bolter may be on a reduced standard, but compliance is easiest to achieve on the bolter for which improvements in maintenance and operator practices are usually sufficient. At the miner, the problem is more elusive. Research continues to identify operating and mining practices that contribute to the exposure..

Geochemical studies were under- taken in the Breckenridge mining district to test the effectiveness of soil and rock-chip samples in high- lighting known mineralization in the district, and in locating sites of possible porphyry-type mineralization, if such mineralization is present in the area. Soil sampling can be done more quickly and more cheaply, but it does not provide a direct site- specific sample of mineralized rock. In well-developed soils, supergene effects may mask and/or displace primary hypogene effects; and even in places where the soils are poorly- developed, as in the Breckenridge district, the masking effects may be felt. Soil anomalies, if present, likely will be of lower amplitude and more diffuse (widespread) than corresponding rock-chip anomalies. On the other hand, detailed rock-chip surveys are more time-consuming and expensive, even though they yield direct geologic information in addition to the chemical data. The goals of the combined soil and rock-chip programs were (1) to com- pare the data from the two; and (2) test the effectiveness in identifying significant chemical anomalies with respect to the geology of the district, as it is presently understood.

"Freeport-McMoRan’s Sierrita operations refines molybdenum disulfide in a ferric chloride leach to remove impurities. To understand bottlenecks in the leach process and the true capacity of the leach system, a cross-functional team was established to look at theoretical models, kinetics of the leaching process, equipment limitations and operational strategies. A series of in-plant tests were run which resulted in a road map for improved throughput. INTRODUCTION Molybdenum, a vital component in the steel industry, is often found in nature as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). Molybdenum disulfide deposits can exist as standalone components in an ore body, or can also be found within copper porphyry nodes. Processing for these copper/molybdenum porphyry ore bodies involves a first stage of flotation to produce a bulk concentrate before separation of the copper and molybdenum concentrates in a second stage of flotation. In this second stage of flotation, a reagent is added to suppress the copper particles, while allowing the molybdenum disulfide particles to remain hydrophobic and continue to float. This separation is very good at keeping the molybdenum out of the copper concentrate; however a portion of the copper continues to float through the circuit. As a result, there is typically some amount of copper in the final molybdenum concentrate. This copper must be removed in order for the molybdenum disulfide product to meet product quality specifications. Once the raw molybdenum disulfide product has been made, a separate process must be applied to remove any copper, lead, or other impurities remaining in the concentrate. This process usually involves the selective leaching of impurities out of the bulk solid. Gupta mentions three specific types of leaching agents, sodium cyanide, ferric chloride, and hydrochloric acid for the removal of sulfide impurities. Sodium cyanide is useful for the removal of copper compounds such as bornite, covellite, and chalcocite.1 Sodium cyanide solution dissolves these copper compounds, and the remaining molybdenum solids are filtered to produce a pure molybdenum concentrate. Ferric chloride works similar to that of sodium cyanide, but is particularly efficient in removing chalcopyrite and galena compounds. These compounds are easily chlorinated at elevated temperatures, producing copper chloride and lead chloride, through the reactions presented below:"

The processing of residues derived from various operations in the mining and metallurgical industry for by-product recovery is becoming more prevalent. A principal target for by-product recovery is flue dust produced by conventional smelting operations. Flue dust from zinc smelters has been processed for many years for the recovery of cadmium (1,2). The cadmium recovery technique which consists of a selective sulfation roast, followed by a water leach and zinc dust cementation, produces a lead cake residue (see chemical analysis in Table I), which consists primarily of lead sulfate.

The difficulties encountered in justifying replacements for over-age mobile mine equipment at the Gay Mine are common to most mining operations. More critical management reviews, resulting from ever rising capital expenses, increased such difficulties. These increased difficulties are especially apparent to those who are primarily operators and are not statisticians, mathematicians, or computer oriented. The Gay Mine is located 17 miles east of the town of Fort Hall in southern Idaho. This open pit operation annually supplies the J. R. Simplot Company and the FMC Corporation with 1.5 MM - 2.0 MM tons of phosphate ore. Stripping ratios average approximately three bank cubic yards of waste per ton of ore mined. The mobile mine equipment fleet consists of ten 24 yard scrapers; twenty-one 30-50 ton end dump trucks; four 32 42 yard shovels; fifteen dozers in the D-8 and D-9 classes; and three road patrols. Equipment replacement is based on the results of evaluations made on individual units. Authorization of capital expenditures for equipment replacement is dependent upon a favorable profitability index (true rate of return on investment) plus a favorable payout time. The system is based on cash flows and requires the determination of (1) the net cash outflows in the form of capital expenses plus (2) the expected cash inflows resulting from reduced expenses and depreciation tax credits. After adjustments for taxes and the time value of money, the net amounts are used to calculate the required indices. The basic elements for the system related to the replacement of mobile mine equipment include: (1) the determination of dollar penalties to be expected from the continued use of aging equipment; (2) the selection of equipment that will provide the greatest return on the investment dollars; (3) the quantification of the expected savings; and (4) the calculations of the prescribed indices. The chemical reactions that occur within a copper-leach recovery system are discussed, and the impact on the overall acid balance is evaluated. Both oxide and sulfide mineralogy are addressed, and their effects on acid consumption, generation and solution buffering are presented. Two case studies that apply the discussed chemistry show the practicality of using a computer spreadsheet acid-balance model for the early planning and design of copper-leach systems.

Narragansett Bay Commission’s (NBC) Pawtucket Tunnel Project includes construction of the 11,600-ft long, 30-ft ID, deep rock tunnel. This paper presents insight into the features and benefits of lump-sum, design-build that led NBC to select it as the project delivery method. The use of a design-build contracting process that included proprietary meetings to discuss and obtain feedback on Alternative Technical Concepts as well as to facilitate reaching consensus on modifications to the GBR-B is also described. The discussion includes features and benefits of design-build process that not only addressed NBC’s desired outcomes, but also allowed the Design-Builder to propose several innovative changes to the Base Technical Concepts included in the bid documents, and to develop a GBR-C that was compatible with their proposed means and methods of construction and addressed what they believed to be the more significant subsurface risks on the project.

The control systems engineer is often faced with the problem of designing tests or experiments where the cost of obtaining information is expensive. This is true in aerospace as well as in process industries. In these situations the details of test design should be carefully evaluated before any test is executed so that the maximum amount of information is obtained for the effort expended. In recent years there has been a steady trend towards increased automation, In the process industries this has resulted in extensive review of process variables and, instrumentation techniques, development of more accurate system mathematical models, and extensive investments in complex control system as well as completely automated plants. When planning and developing these systems, where each measure of a process variable is usually expensive, it behooves the design engineer to give considerable thought to the details of test design before instrumentation is procured and installed so that the maximum amount of information can be obtained for the expense incurred.
