"Outotec’s TankCell® e500 flotation cell was commissioned during 2014 at the Kevitsa Mine in northern Finland. The TankCell® e500 is the first cell in this size class (500m3) to be run in an operational duty and it has been working as the first rougher in the copper flotation circuit. Treating around 850tph with an average grade of 0.3% Cu the TankCell® e500 has run with an average copper recovery of 71% and an average enrichment ratio of 50. In addition the cell has proved to be very energy efficient, operating with a specific energy of around 0.4kW/m3 under production conditions. This presentation will provide a review of the installation and operation of the TankCell® e500 at Kevitsa and will summarize the results found in the published literature from the various testing campaigns conducted around the cell. INTRODUCTION The TankCell e500 was installed and commissioned at the Kevitsa mine in northern Finland in 2014. Post startup the cell was initially run for testing and optimization with various test campaigns undertaken. but was subsequently taken into a production duty (Mattson et al., 2015a). At Kevitsa the cell is run as the first copper rougher replacing the previous two copper roughers (both 160m3) in this duty. The unit is running at between 38-40% solids at a feed rate of approximately 850tph. Since operational the average copper recovery from this single cell has been around 71% copper. This is typically with an enrichment ratio of around 50 being fed with an average head grade of 0.3% copper. More details on the circuit configuration and production performance of the e500 at Kevitsa can be found in Mattson et al., (2015a) and Murphy et al., (2016). In addition through the optimization program with the use of a variable speed drive controlling rotor speed it was found the the e500 was very energy efficient under production conditions. During this work the cell was found to run at a specific energy of around 0.4kW/m3 which exceeded design expectations (Xia et al., 2015)."

Intermittent coal mining has been conducted in Alaska for over a century. The first report of coal in Alaska was by the Veechy expedition of 1826 and 1827. Whaling ships used coal from Corwin Bluff near Cape Beaufort during the early and latter parts of the 19th century. The first coal mine in Alaska -- and probably the oldest in the Pacific coast of North America -- was opened by the Russians at Port Graham on the southwest tip of the Kenai Peninsula. The mine was operated from 1855 until 1867 when the United States took possession of Alaska. From 1880 to 1915 coal mining was carried on intermittently at several localities including Unga Island, Herendeen Bay, Chignik Bay, Kachemak Bay, and several points along the Yukon River. Small coal mines along the Yukon River provided fuel for the river steamers traveling from St. Michaels to Whitehorse. The area of sustained coal production began with the completion of the Alaskan Railroad from Anchorage to the Matanuska coal field in 1916 and to the Nenana field in 1918. Coal production continued to increase until 1953, at which time the oil and gas fields in Cook Inlet were developed. Oil and gas eventually replaced- the Matanuska coal as a means of providing heat and power. The military in the Anchorage area shifted from coal to oil in 1967 causing a decrease in production. The increased demand for electric power in the Fairbanks area offset the decline and coal production started to increase. In 1969-1970 the Golden Valley Electric Association constructed a mine-mouth power plant 70 miles southwest of Fairbanks near Healy and a power line to Fairbanks. LOCATION OF COALS IN ALASKA Coals are found in all geographical subdivisions of Alaska. Coal in Alaska ranges in age from Carboniferous to Tertiary, and grade from lignite through anthracite. The water treatment industry has historically been involved with reducing or inhibiting the inherant scale forming or fouling tendencies of natural waters associated with large industrial cooling water systems. Fouling is an extremely complex phenomenon. From a fundamental point of view, it may be characterized as a combined momentum, heat, and mass transfer problem. Chemical reaction kinetics is involved, as well as the solubility characteristics of salts in water and corrosion technology. It is a routine practice to over size pumps, piping and heat exchangers to compensate for fouling.

In the last two decades, acid iron ore pellets have established their predominant position as the iron-bearing burden material for blast furnace ironmaking in North America. It is a general practice that pelletization plants are asked to produce pellets of certain chemical composition and in a narrow range of sizes. A minimum amount of fines created during handling and transportation is desirable. Such a requirement is often expressed indirectly by the minimum compression load causing a pellet to break. The behavior of pellets inside a blast furnace, of course, is very important for a smooth and efficient operation. Before its melting in the lower part of a blast furnace during this period of several hours the behavior of pellets depends on their properties after induration as well as conditions inside each furnace. Among properties of indurated pellets, the ability to maintain their physical integrity in the burden and to be reducible are most important. To maintain the integrity of pellets (i.e., minimal low temperature breakdown, swelling and softening) so that there will be adequate overall permeability for certain wind rate and local permeability for gas/solid contact for reduction. A higher reducibility will moderate the adverse effects of swelling and softening and contribute to a smooth operation and efficient use of heat and reductants in a blast furnace. An article devoted to the relationships between the quality of iron ore pellets and blast furnace practice has been published elsewhere(1); therefore, no further discussion is needed here. The mechanism of strengthening of iron ore pellets during firing has been the subject of investigation of many authors(2). There is no doubt that the bridging of the growing hematite grains, particularly starting with magnetite concentrates, is very significant in the production of strong pellets. Recently, there are many reports from blast furnace operators that they have noticed the adverse effect of LTB in their plants. It is obvious that the strength derived from bridged hematite grains may disappear when hematite is converted to magnetite with thorough breakdown of grain structures. It is suggested that some other strengthening mechanism may be required in order to improve the LTB index of acid pellets. The influence of porosity on both compression strength and reducibility follows regular patterns. It has been suggested(1) that the amount of liquid slag in pellets during firing determines to a large extent the porosity, hence, indirectly, strength and reducibility.

Careful financial analysis of capital investments has always been a vital task in mining which is one of the most capital intensive sectors of the economy. Furthermore, mining costs have leapt ahead at an astonishing rate in recent years not just due to accelerated inflation, which affects everyone, but also due to the imposition of enormous costs of enviromental regulation and the continuing decline in ore tenor. Not only have unit costs risen, but the amount of effort expended to recover a pound of metal has increased due to the inexorable decrease in ore grades. New low-margin, high-volume mining investments place increasing importance on sound financial planning. Owing to the enormous investments involved, a greater share of individual corporate resources is committed to these projects than is normally the case in other industries. Thus, the consequences of failure are extremely grave, and a close examination of all inputs to the evaluation equation is clearly indicated.

An abandoned waste impoundment located within a portion of the Kellogg, Idaho Superfund site constitutes a field research area for studying the feasibility of recovering heavy metals in-situ from unsaturated mine and mill wastes. A prototype in-situ leaching cell has been evaluated using liquid-phase tracer tests and other hydro-geologic tests prior to introducing a lixiviant. The results of the tests suggest that: (1) the cell can be operated excursion-free with a low-density lixiviant at an injection/withdrawal rate of approximately 0.32 l/s; and (2) each hydro-geologic unit is highly heterogeneous at the different scales studied.

The continuous balling? operation whereby a moist particulate mass is tumbled in a horizontal revolving drum with recirculation of the undersize product can be extremely unstable. Product and recycle rates are subject to wide fluctuations. Although the problem seems to be well-recognized, there is little published information or quantitative data readily available, especially in relation to industrial-scale circuits. Probably the best available published results are in the Russian literature, an illustration of which is given in Figure 1. These data, taken from a study') of some of the factors which influence the stabilization of the pelletizing process, illustrate the wide variations in circulating load and circuit productivity which may be encountered over a period of operation. The problems of balling circuit stability may be traced to random seed or nuclei generation and uncontrolled agglomerate growth. The situation is analogous to that in crystallization processes where (4 considerable attention is given to nucleation control. In the past few years the world petroleum industry has increasingly felt the weight of changes in the principal economic factors affecting pro¬fits. As a result of, these changes, it has been necessary for many oil companies to acquire certain new facilities in order to strengthen their competitive positions and thereby protect their tremendous investments in crude oil reserves, pipe line facilities, refining operations, and marketing outlets. Principally these needs have been met by new capital outlays. A supplementary, method of acquiring needed facilities, however, has been to obtain existing facilities through complete or partial acquisition of other companies.' properties. It is this method of meeting competitive pressures with which this paper is concerned. This paper presents a statistical breakdown of the mergers and acquisitions which occurred in the oil industry between January 1, 1954, and October 1, 1959, showing the frequency' with which certain types of properties were acquired in each of the years studied. In addition, it discusses the principal economic conditions which stimulated many of these property trans¬fers, comments on the effects of these mergers on the consuming public, and indicates the types of, mergers and the rate at which they may be expected during the next three or four years. The basic data upon which the statistical analysis presented in this paper is based were taken from several published sources. Obviously they are somewhat incomplete because not all mergers and acquisitions were reported However;, a careful search was conducted through, The Wall Street, Journal, The Oil and Gas Journal, Potroleum Week, and The Oil Daily with the result that the data should be reasonably complete and comparable for each of the years studied, It is believed, therefore, that the statistical analysis which' follows provides a reasonably accurate indication of the general trend in mergers and acquisitions during the period studied.

Results of measurements of radioluminescence, phosphorescence and thermoluminescence in LiF:Mg irradiated with [a] radiation, using simple facilities, are presented. The calculated energy budget in the exposed chips using [a] radiation is compared to published data using [y] irradiation.

When systematically compared to other engineering fields, mining engineering is distinctive in 1) having a total systems concern. 2) dealing with encumbered space and 3) requiring full spectrum practice. The total systems concern results from having to design and then co-ordinate in space and time several major systems: excavating and bulk handling, ground control, life support and normal support. This requirement favors a generalist rather than a specialist approach. In coping with encumbered space especially in underground coal mining, the uncertainties of geologic conditions are compounded by tightness, roughness, remoteness and hazards. Into this difficult setting the total systems * complex is "stuffed," adding congestion and interference. Because of significant ground deterioration a flexible "rapid in-out" approach is usually vital to mining. Full spectrum practice arises from the need to manage, as well as to plan and design, a labor intensive operation. Since market conditions can also fluctuate most aspects of administration are needed in many respects, mining engineering functions relative to civil engineering in a way similar to industrial to mechanical engineering, with encumbered space being crucial. On this basis stress is placed on: 1) personal relations, 2) field work and 3) entrepreneurship, viewing time as money. Specific recommendations for improving engineering, safety and management and leadership are made. Since most new deposits are marginal, by applying these recommendations with high technology they could possibly now be mined on a widespread basis.

Underground construction environments, especially those with limited airflow such as shafts, cross passages, and stations, necessitate effective dust control. This requires combining existing measures with adapted approaches for more efficient and productive operations, cleaner jobsites, and decreased worker exposure to contaminated air. This paper will discuss new configurations and trends in dust collection on Australasian infrastructure projects including WestConnex, Melbourne Metro Tunnel and City Rail Link, all of which have applied innovative methodologies for mobile at-source dust collection. Mobile dust collectors can be track-mounted dust collectors operate alongside equipment, use hydraulic stepping systems to advance with roadheaders, or compact castor-mounted units are used within cross passage confines.

The occurrence of rock falls in underground coal mines entails detrimental effects as fatal or non-fatal injuries on workers, stoppages in mining operations and breakdown of equipment. In this paper, a risk assessment approach on the basis of a decision analysis trend is employed in order to assess the possibility of and manage roof falls. Risk is then assessed by determination of likelihood of occurrence and the cost of consequences (outcomes). In this regard, collected real roof fall data from Tabas and Kerman coal regions comprising of several underground coal mines are used. It is concluded that the annual accidents due to the roof falls occurrence in the all investigated mines are so high that it is economically feasible to improve the support systems and to implement a suitable educational program as well as an accurate supervision and other elements of safety management.

Although roof bolting has been a major means of strata support for nearly two decades, little attention has been directed towards the design of bolt Installations. The variables involved are interdependent and their study complex. However, some simple tests may be employed to serve as guides to the efficient design of roof bolt systems. Local conditions are continually varying and are important to pattern design. This paper discusses such considerations and suggests techniques which may be employed to effect improved roof control with bolts.

Atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) are required when using air from conveyor belt entries to ventilate working sections in U.S. underground coal mines. AMS technology has the potential to increase fire safety mine-wide, but research is needed to determine the detection and response times for fires of a variety of combustible materials. To evaluate the potential of an AMS for fire detection in other areas of a coal mine, a series of full-scale fire experiments were conducted to determine detection and response times from fires of different combustible materials that are found in U.S. underground coal mines, including high- and low-volatility coals, conveyor belts, brattice materials, different types of wood, diesel fuel, and a foam sealant. These experiments were conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) located in Pittsburgh, PA, using a commercially available AMS that is typical of current technology. The results showed that through proper selection of sensors and their locations, a mine-wide AMS can provide sufficient early fire warning times and improve the health and safety of miners.

Daily everyone depends on the great variety of glass products, so much so that glass is often taken for granted. In fact most people do not realize how versatile glass has become. Consider the various uses and then try to imagine a day in which we are not influenced by glass. Common uses include container ware, table ware, window glass, lead crystal, automobile glass, and fiber glass. Several less common, but important, uses include laboratory ware, pharmaceutical, TV bulbs, light bulbs, glass ceramics, optical glass, fiber optics, and laser glass. Corning, Inc., a leader in specialty products, uses nearly 1 000 different compositions to manufacture about 60 000 different products (Edwards and Copley, 1977). Glass is such a complex product that-definitions vary and exceptions can be found for most definitions. Glass is an inorganic amorphous (non-crystalline) solid. Most glasses are produced by melting of a mixture of oxide raw materials, and then cooled to room temperature. Soda-lime-silica composition.s account for about 90% of all glasses melted (Anon, 1973). The properties of the glass product come mainly from its chemical composition. All of the different glasses require melting a combination of raw materials and forming the molten material into the desired shape. Both the melting and the forming processes use sophisticated technology and these technologies require experts to manage these production systems. The manufacturing process is continuous and takes place in tonnage quantities, so adjustments in the batch to achieve the desired finished product requires a great deal of expertise. Raw materials are fed to the batch mixing area in very large quantities (tons in most cases). As a result, impurities in the range of 0.1% result in addition of that impurity within the molten glass in kilogram amounts. More than twenty different industrial minerals are consumed in the manufacture of various kinds of glass (O'Driscoll, 1990). This chapter describes the major and minor ingredients of the various glass batches. It discusses the roles of the various oxides in the glass batch and most importantly considers the mineral raw materials which supply the glass industry. Each of the raw materials is described in detail in other chapters so the geology and mineralogy sections are kept brief here. Container glass, by far, accounts for the most production; followed by flat glass, fiber glass, and specialty glass of which table ware accounts for the greatest tonnage. [Table 1] shows the general production data for 1987 through 1990. Statistics for many of the uses do not appear because production volumes are small compared to the major uses. The glass industry is organized in four categories: containers, flat glass, fiber glass and specialty glass. The US Department of Commerce, Bureau of Census, publishes production data about the glass industry in three different categories: 1) glass containers, 2) consumer, scientific, technical and industrial glassware, and 3) flat glass. The Bureau has very complete statistics about the glass industry in these three categories but they report production data in different units according to industry standards. Therefore, [Table 1] gives the production data in dissimilar units. The production of most glass articles follows similar steps. The raw materials are mixed and the resulting batch is fed into the furnace. In soda-lime-silica glasses melting begins between 600 and 900°C. At these temperatures CO, and other gasses are released which create bubbles in the molten glass. To remove the bubbles and insure complete melting the temperature is raised to between 1 500 and 1 600°C. This is the melting-refining stage during which the refining agents in the glass batch serve to aid in the release of gas bubbles, homogenize the melt, and prevent the formation of scum on the surface of the molten liquid. At the conclusion of the melting-refining stage the glass is too fluid for working and the melt is cooled to about 1 100°C to attain the proper viscosity for working and forming to begin. After the glass article has been made, it must undergo annealing (slowly and uniformly reheated and cooled) to remove thermal stresses that were created during the forming process.

"Fatigue presents several challenges for the mining industry. Depending on the specific occupation, daily work or operational setup on any given mine site, mining jobs can have a fair amount of labor-intensive tasks mixed with monotonous and repetitive duties. Combined with the long working hours and shift-work schedules of mining work, the prevalence of fatigue in mine workers may seem rather unsurprising.Mining is certainly not alone in facing the challenge of addressing worker fatigue. Indeed, many of the characteristics above mirror the similarities of fatigue in other industries, such as health care, aviation and security. To the extent that fatigue in mining acts like fatigue in any other industry, then any fatigue management applications, trainings, or interventions in existence can be borrowed from other industries and applied to mining in a cookie-cutter approach. However, some have argued that mining in particular is especially susceptible to increases in the prevalence of fatigue beyond the characteristics listed above due to the multifaceted combination of factors in mining environments associated with fatigue: dim lighting; limited visual acuity; hot temperatures; loud noise; highly repetitive, sustained, and monotonous tasks; shiftwork; long work hours; long commute times due to mine site remoteness; early morning awakenings; and generally poor sleep habits (Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, 2012; Legault, 2011). Legault (2011) in particular argues that it is the combination of these factors simultaneously that can make mineworkers particularly susceptible to sleep deprivation and fatigue in comparison to other industries where these factors are often not present all together. If fatigue looks and acts different in mining, as others have argued, more research is needed to determine if, how, and why worker fatigue might need to be managed differently in mining.While the burden of fatigue on the mining population has not yet been evaluated thoroughly, methods and measures of fatigue management remain a popular point of discussion. Many commercial suppliers and consultancy groups have begun to develop technologically based fatigue monitoring systems (McMillian, 2013). Some technologies can monitor vehicle operators for indicators of wakefulness, such as percent eyelid"

The results of an experimental study on the dispersion and deposition characteristics of fine coal dust in mine airways are presented. Experiments were conducted at various flow velocities using bituminous and semi-anthracite-coal dust which had a large proportion of dust in the respirable size range. Cross sectional variations in the concentration of dust at various points in the airway were also measured. Instruments used in the experiments included gravimetric samplers and impactors. Concentration measurements were made both for the respirable and total airborne dust. The experimental design, sampling procedures and results are discussed. The study is aimed at providing a better understanding of the temporal and spatial behavior of dust particles in underground mine airways.

Capital budgeting and investment analysis have, to this point, been beyond the scope of this text. However, a recent conceptual development by John K. Shank and Vijay Govindarajan in the capital budgeting literature is of interest to operations managers because it (1) employs some of the cost management tools outlined earlier in this text and (2) provides a useful framework for using cost management techniques to improve the competitive position of the firm. ft Shank and Govindarajan present a method of analyzing proposed expenditures that is not based on discounted cash flow measures. Their approach employs a combination of three analytical tools: value chain analysis, strategic positioning analysis, and cost driver analysis. In each of these, cost and revenue information is used in ways normally not associated with conventional budgeting. Using this framework, capital projects are selected based on their ability to improve the firm's strategic position. Shank and Govindarajan have termed this approach "strategic cost management."

Both water pollution and proposed solid waste disposal regulations have a definite effect on the copper leaching industry and some of the major factors affecting the industry are discussed in this paper. New developments of the NDPS are discussed with emphasis on the "toxic" or priority pollutants and EPA's philosophy on the control of these pollutants, The protection of groundwater is the prime aim of RCRA through solid/hazardous waste management. Some of the major elements of the RCA regulations that will affect the copper leaching industry are discussed.
