The Bureau of Mines was created in 1910 by an act of Congress and subsequently directed to: "...conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining, and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances with a view to improving health conditions, and increasing safety, efficiency, economic development, and conserving resources through the prevention of waste ..." Under this broad charter, the Bureau's responsibilities have changed and grown from an almost exclusive concern with coal and coal mine safety to the present emphasis on a full spectrum of mineral producing and consuming problems. In the past 30 years, the domestic consumption of coal, oil, gas, metals, and industrial minerals has more than quadrupled, in parallel with the rapid and enormous growth in industrial production. Of the scores of metals and nonmetals essential to the Nation's progress and security, many are scarce and difficult to wrest from domestic sources. Reserves of some ores are dwindling. Available ore resources are becoming leaner and more difficult to treat. In recognition of this many faceted problem, the Bureau has engaged in a continuing quest for new and improved technology to enable economic exploitation of marginal minerals and fuels, to find substitutes for minerals in short supply, and to create better materials to meet the expanding and diverse requirements of the growing economy. The current central concern of the Bureau is focused on meeting projected fuel, metal, and mineral demands at the lowest real cost by recovery from available resources by new and improved technology that minimizes waste, hazards, and social and environmental problems.

Nabarlek is situated in the Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve about 270 km due east of Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. During the dry season (May to November) Nabarlek is accessible from Darwin over the Arnhem Highway-- a distance of 330 km. Throughout the wet season (December to April), except for a few days, access is provided by aircraft from Darwin to the Nabarlek airstrip. Because of the limited access during the wet season, reagents and supplies have to be stock- piled for six months on the site to maintain operations. With the mine and plant being remotely located on private Arnhem land with very limited access outside the site fence, operating personnel are flown to Darwin every six days for their days off.

The Minntac complex is a facility for production of iron ore pellets located on the Mesabi Range at mountain iron, Minnesota. It consists basically of a mine, crushing plant, concentrator, and a pelletizer producing twelve and one-half million tons of pellets annually. This paper deals with some of the aspects of the grinding circuits; but prior to that discussion, it might be well to briefly describe the flow of material in the operation. The crude ore, containing from 20% to 25% magnetic iron, is mined by 14-yard electric shovels. .the blasted ore is loaded directly into 50-yard side dump railroad cars and hauled to the crushing plant. Crushing is done in three stages, originally, two 60" primary crushers; four 7-foot standard secondary crushers; and six 7-foot short head tertiary crushers were installed, when the plant was expanded to double its capacity, five secondary and ten tertiary crushers were added. These were duplicates of the original 7-foot standard and short head crushers used in the original construction, there was no expansion of the primary crushers but a one-half-million-ton surge pile of tertiary crusher feed was added.

Newmont Mining Corporation has been processing refractory gold ores by roasting since January 1995. The ores are refractory due to the association of the gold with iron sulfides, namely pyrite and marcasite, and the presence of carbonaceous components and is oxidized in an oxygen-enriched gaseous atmosphere. The structural characteristics of the calcine have a strong influence on the eventual recovery of gold by cyanidation. These characteristics are strongly dependent upon the roasting conditions, mainly the roasting temperature. Originally, the sulfides and carbonaceous matter were oxidized at a temperature that typically ranged between 535 and 560 °C. Controlling the roasting temperature within the lower and narrower range of 510 to 515 °C produced a calcine with a larger surface area(e.g. higher porosity), which resulted in a gold recovery increase of3.3 percent in 2001 equivalent to 5.1 million dollars of additional gross revenue. The new strategies of operating at temperatures never tested before are discussed. It constituted a great challenge to the control room operators for the lower operating temperature falls much closer to the ignition temperature of the sulfide ore and smaller and more frequent adjustments in operating parameters were needed to improve and maintain high gold recoveries. Based on the encouraging results that were achieved in 2001, a decision was made to install a “smart” process control system because the roaster temperature control was performed by manual inputs from the control room operators. The development and implementation of the control system to reduce or eliminate the temperature variability between the different control room operators commenced in June of 2002 and was fully operational by the end of October. Lower roaster temperatures were achieved (500 to 505 °C), which resulted in further increase of gold recovery by about two percent. The overall recovery increase equated to 8.0 million dollars of additional revenue for the first 10 months of 2002.

Shredding is the usual first step in processing municipal solid waste (MSW) for resource recovery. This unit process requires high capital cost and, usually, considerable maintenance cost. In addition, some shredders at times will render certain components of the MSW in a form difficult to recover. This is particularly true in the way metal cans are distorted and the way glass is pulverized. A trommel screen was proposed (1) to pre-process packer truck refuse prior to shredding. Part of the logic for this step is that the portion of raw refuse already within the specified shredder output particle size range would bypass the primary shredder and proceed directly to further processing, such as to an air classifier or secondary shredder. This would reduce the throughput of the primary shredder and allow certain recoverable materials, such as glass, to remain in larger piece sizes, important for recovery. In this way, operating costs for the shredder would be reduced and the recoverability of materials, and hence the revenue, increased.

Solving ventilation networks of natural air splitting is a classical problem in mine ventilation. A common approach to this problem is to formulate it based on Kirchhoff's voltage and current laws and obtain the solution by an iterative technique known as the Hardy Cross method. In this paper, it is shown that the problem can be formulated and analyzed as an unconstrained optimization (minimization) problem. The computational experience with the method of conjugate gradients is also discussed.

The history of mine safety legislation in this country is also a history of mine explosions. Nearly every piece of safety legislation that has been introduced or amended has resulted from some type of a disaster. When coal was first discovered and mined, it was extracted from along outcrops. As the coal became depleted near the surface, underground mining developed. When the first mine penetrated the outcrop, a great number of problems developed, many of which remain with us today. One of those problems is the potential for mine ignitions and explosions. Naturally, when underground mining progressed a few feet into the outcrop, some type of artificial light was needed. Early accounts of mining in Spain, Italy, Japan, and Great Britain indicate that torches served to light the mines. Later, candles were used, and still later, earthern oil lamps containing fish oil were used. As workings got deeper, explosions began to occur. When one did occur it was thought to be the work of goblins or the devil. As explosions became more frequent, it became very obvious that the use of open flames for lighting was very dangerous. A substitute was sought. Dried fish skins which gave off a weak phosphorescent light were tried. A mixture of flour and lime made from oyster shells called Canton phosphorous was also tried unsuccessfully. Fireflies in a bottle were also used.

"In order to sustain the operations in chromite processing plants, due to concentrate selling cost, plants are in need of optimization in terms of capacity and recovery increase. In this study, DAMA Engineering carried out a methodological study for the purpose after a detailed sampling campaign in a plant which is situated in one the main chromite zones in Turkey; 1 The current status of the plant was investigated quantitatively with the bottlenecks, Plant overall efficiency in terms of recovery, Efficiencies of the particular equipment (mill, screen, gravity circuit), 2 A new circuit was proposed with the available equipment, 3 The new circuit that is product of modeling and experimental effort, was evaluated quantitatively as if it is a running plant, After 4-5 months continuous effort, the capacity of the plant was almost doubled (37 tph to 70 tph) and the plant overall recovery was increased from 48% to 63% by grinding adjustments and additional shaking tables theoretically. It was shown that the plant may move into profit with the minimum amount investment using readily available system. INTRODUCTION TO THE CURRENT PLANT The objective of the study is to increase the capacity and recovery of the chromite plant owned by Kurmel Group, Akmetal Inc. The complete study is given elsewhere (DAMA, 2016). The plant is situated in one of the main chromite zones in Turkey; Aladag. The current capacity of the plant is around 35 tph and the overall recovery declared by plant engineer is around 47 %. The chromite plant mainly has 3 units; crushing, grinding and gravitational circuits. The crushing circuit has 3 stages; a jaw crusher, a secondary cone crusher and a tertiary cone crusher operating in closed circuit with a vibrating screen with the aperture size of 15mm. In grinding circuit, a rod mill (2.44 6m x 3.6) and a ball mill (2.13 x 2.3m) are used for primary and secondary grinding, respectively. Derrick screens are used for the size separation. Additionally, for the size classification of the system, hydrosizers are used and each size fraction is sent to the shaking table sets. The middling product of the tables is subjected to re-grinding with a ball mill with the dimensions of 2.1 x 2.9 m. The capacity and the recovery are affected by several bottle necks; hydrosizers’ pure classification, primary/secondary mill power vs capacity problems, re-grinding product’s high slime content and so on. These combined factors made the plant to run in low recovery and capacity. Hence, DAMA was asked to make a study to investigate current status of the plant and propose a new solution to increase capacity and recovery of the plant. The conceptual flowsheet of the circuit is given in Figure 1 below."

The trend in the coal industry for many years has been to make everything "bigger and faster" This also held true for loading and storage facilities. Where once a million ton per year mine was rare, three to five million ton per year mines are not uncommon today in the bituminous industry. This greatly increased production, made possible through mechanization, required greatly improved loading facilities just to get the coal away from the mine. Also, there is a trend toward combining production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant. In addition to increased loading capacity, this frequently necessitates raw coal storage and blending facilities. The development of the unit train, more than any other factor, has contributed to the widespread construction of storage and high-speed loading facilities for clean coal. In the export market, the construction of ever larger coal bulk carriers has contributed to a need for faster and larger loading facilities at ports. The present engineering and construction cost of these larger facilities make it essential that the flow and handling properties of the particular coals are fully known. These properties can be measured well in advance and the proper design criteria established. This eliminates costly surprises later on during start-up and operations. This paper will review coal and coal refuse properties, such as shear strength, cohesion, friability, and the flowability of coal and how they affect the design criteria of storage silos.

There are technical and commercial limitations on using high fluorine copper concentrates in industrial copper smelters. The presence of more than 1000 ppm of fluorine in copper concentrates affects the sulfuric acid units generally integrated to copper smelters, and penalties are normally applied to high fluorine concentrate prices. Several process alternatives to this issue were studied at CVRD Technology Center (SUTEC): modifications on conventional sulfuric acid plants to use high fluorine concentrates, removal of fluorine containing minerals in flotation using depressants, selective leaching of fluorine minerals and sulfuric leach of copper concentrates. Finally, a hydrometallurgical process of removing fluorine was developed by SUTEC.

Approximately 50 percent of the uranium resource of the Free World is in deposits of Precambrian age, principally in lower Proterozoic conglomerates in Canada and South Africa (Uranium Resources, Joint Report, ENEA and IAEA, 1967). Most of the uranium resource of the United States is in Mesozoic and Cenozoic continental clastic sedimentary rocks that fill intracratonic basins. The Atomic Energy Commission is investigating the distribution of uranium and thorium in the Precambrian of the Western United States and the relationship of, time-space-facies patterns of uranium and thorium enrichment in the Precambrian to the major resources of uranium in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic host sedimentary rocks. This paper summarizes the results of preliminary studies of the Precambrian in the Southwestern United States including New Mexico, Arizona, southern Nevada, and southern California (Fig. 1). The host rock provenances for the major uranium resources in epigenetic deposits of Mesozoic and Cenozoic age in the Western United States were in areas of extensive Precambrian exposure along the eastern margin of the Phanerozoic geosynclinal belt (Fig. 2). Mesozoic continental clastic sediments in the Colorado Plateau contain about two-thirds of the uranium resource of the United States. These sediments formed from detritus derived from the Mogollon highland in the Southwestern United States where the Precambrian was extensively exposed (Stewart, et al., 19593 McKee, et al., 1959; McKee, et al., 1956; Craig, et al., 1955) (Fig. 2). A genetic relationship may exist between this provenance and the major uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau. The Precambrian might be equally important in the genesis of uranium deposits whether the most important process in the formation of these deposits was the leaching of low-order intrinsic amounts of uranium from Precambrian granite or from Mesozoic pyroclastics derived from syntexis of the Precambrian basement rocks (Malan, 1968).

The Alimak Raise Method, using the Alimak Climber, has proven to be a new, fast, economical method of driving raises at the Iron King Branch of Shat-tuck Denn Mining Corporation, Humboldt, Arizona. In order to fully understand the advantages of the Alimak Raise Climber, it is necessary first to describe the basic machine; second, a complete cycle of a raise round; and third, the comparative speed and economy afforded the Iron King operation by using this new method of raise driving: The raise climber consists of a drilling platform that is raised and lowered by two 6.2 HP compressed air motors that drive, through roller chains and sprockets, three worm gears connected in series. These worm gears drive pinions which grip the guide rail rack. The worm gems are fitted with spring-loaded couplings so that a small rock or grit in the rack is passed over without disturbing the mesh between the rack and the other pinions.

The area of Canada with which we are here concerned consists of Yukon Territory and Northern British Columbia. Generally it lies west of the coastal mountain range and access to the sea can be gained at only selected points which are relatively few. It is served by the Alaska Highway as well as a provincial and territorial system of roads permitting transport of mining products to Whitehorse in Yukon Territory. This town it the northern terminus of the White Pass and Yukon Route, which system provides a rail service between Whitehorse and Skagway, Alaska a distance of 110 miles, and thence to Vancouver, British Columbia, by the coastal Motor Vessel C. J. Rogers, a distance of an additional 890 miles. At present the service between Vancouver, B.C. and Whitehorse, Y. T. is on a fourteen day basis. The coastal vessel, capable of carrying 3,200 tons of cargo, was specially designed and built in 1955 for handling containerized cargo and general cargo northbound, and containerized and palletized asbestos fibre, and palletized lead and zinc concentrates southbound.

INTRODUCTION With the introduction of large diameter hole drilling to underground mining, a need for the development and utilization of new blasting technology has arisen. This new technology has resulted in more efficient blasting and in easier and cheaper mining. The application of spherical charges to the crater blasting method is an im¬portant part of this technology. Spherical charges, or their geometric equivalent, make for highly efficient use of explosives in the cratering application. Their geo¬metrical configuration, normally a length :diameter ra¬tio of <6:1, limits their charge weight size. For exam¬ple in a 165-mm (61/2-in.) hole a spherical charge weighs approximately 34 kg (75 lb). These dimensional and weight restrictions require careful engineering design and control in the production application. Strathcona mine, a large tonnage mechanized cut¬and-fill and blasthole stoping operation located on the north rim of the Sudbury Basin, has successfully em¬ployed the crater blasting method in production blasting for the past two and a half years (as of 1979). As a result, this method, using spherical charges, has made possible the development and implementation of a verti¬cal retreat blasthole mining method which is being used for rib pillar recovery. The crater method used at Strathcona essentially in¬volves blasting off horizontal slices of ore into an under¬cut while retreating vertically to the pillar overcut elevation. Loading and priming of the holes is achieved from the overcut and the blasted muck is recovered by load¬haul-dump (LHD) units through a drawpoint system. Valuable experience on the behavior and performance of explosives in large diameter holes has been gained in both the operating and engineering fields from the appli¬cation of this blasting method. It has been used in drop raising and is currently being evaluated for use in pri¬mary stoping operations. Also, serious consideration is being given to its use for the recovery of post pillars in mined-out and backfilled cut and fill stopes. The method has significant advantages over conven¬tional methods of pillar recovery from economic, ground control, and safety points of view. These include cost benefits due to a minimum stoping development, less ground support, reduced labor requirements, and faster mining rate. Research on the blasting mechanism indi¬cated the method should result in less damage to fill walls than would be normally expected with conven¬tional longhole or large diameter hole cylindrical blast¬ing (benching). This is primarily due to the limited charge weight per delay because of the size dimensions of a spherical as compared with a cylindrical charge and also because the large diameter holes experience less de¬viation than standard-sized longholes. Experience has shown that wall damage has been minimized with the use of this method. The safety aspects of the working environment are also improved as there is no require¬ment for manpower to go under exposed backs after blasting, which is a significant improvement over the cut-and-fill method. CRATERING THEORY General The term cratering, in blasting, is applied to the for¬mation of a surface cavity in a material as the result of detonating an explosive charge in that material. This blasting concept was initially used as a tool in the eval¬uation of explosives performance; however, it has been utilized more recently on surface and to a lesser extent in underground blasting operations. Explosive charges used in crater method are nor¬mally spherical or the geometric equivalent, as research into the application of this breakage mechanism to rock indicates that spherical charges or their equivalent pro¬duce optimum results. In blasting practice, spherical charges have been defined as having a length to diameter (L: D) ratio of 4:1 or less, and up to, but not exceeding a L: D = 6:1. Thus, for holes 165 mm (61/2 in.) diam, a charge 165 mm (61/2 in.) diam, and 990 mm (39 in.) in length would constitute a spherical charge. Crater Testing Crater testing for underground application is nor¬mally accomplished by drilling smaller than production sized horizontal holes into drift walls, placing relatively small charges of explosives in the holes at various depths of burial, firing the charges, and measuring the results. The results are scaled to develop charge weight size and depth of burial parameters for production hole sizes. In theory, this procedure is valid and is appli¬cable for surface blasting; however, in underground applications where the craters are inverted, there is some question as to whether extrapolation of the test results is appropriate. As well as the fact that craters are in¬verted with resultant gravity stresses, testing is often done in a waste rock drift where the properties differ from those in ore rock. There is also some question as to whether a 51 or 76-mm (2 or 3-in.) diam charge behaves similarly to a 165-mm (61/2-in.) charge in a confined borehole. Crater testing at Strathcona involved drilling 76-mm (3-in.) diam holes at various depths ranging from 1 to 3 m (3 to 10 ft). The test holes were drilled in the wall of a predominately waste drift as well as in a stope wall. Charges were placed at various depths of burial, were confined, fired, and the results measured. Although the results were somewhat erratic, possibly because of the aforementioned reasons, they did provide guidelines for basic design for production application. The extraction of industrial minerals is usually confined to relatively small mining operations. The recent COSMAR (Committee on Surface Mining and Reclamation) report found that 93% of all mines in the United States were of the small unit variety. Also, of the total number of mines in the U.S. (15,279) 96% were in the industrial minerals (non-metals excluding coal) category. To break it down further, 86% were sand and gravel, and crushed stone operations. Therefore, we are talking about a very large number of small mining operations. If these small miners can afford to hire a college graduate, what kind of training should this person have beyond the normal mining engineering curriculum to best serve the problems that he or she will encounter?

The Plewes method is relatively well known among geotechnical engineers interested in assessing the liquefaction potential of soil deposits. Furthermore, it was one of the four methods considered in the post-failure investigation report of the Feijao Dam I, also known as the Brumadinho Dam, in Brazil. The inclusion of the method in that report is likely to increase its visibility among geotechnical practitioners tasked with assessing the liquefaction potential of tailings. While the authors of the method duly presented it as a screening method, more recent technical literature contains conflicting views on its reliability. Considering the popularity of the method and that the safety record of tailings dams is a cause of great concern, this study assessed the uncertainty of results from the Plewes method. The study concludes that, even under optimistic assumptions, the results of the method are too uncertain for detailed characterization of tailings deposits.

Coal handling facilities, such as utility plants, coal terminals, ports, manufacturing, processing, etc. Protect themselves against interruptions in coal receipts by maintaining a 60 to 90 day supply in storage. Not too long ago, these storage piles were referred in terms of hundreds or thousands of tons. Today, it is not unusual to have hundreds of thousands or millions of tons in storage. Burn, or shipping and receiving, rates have increased dramatically and storage piles have grown in horizontal as well as vertical dimensions. Fixed systems for delivering and retrieving coal from storage have increased in length and operating capacity and have become highly sophisticated in their operation. With few exceptions, mobile material handling equipment is used to handle all coal beyond the reach of these systems. These machines take excess loose coal from the fixed system to the storage area, place it on the storage pile, compact it, maintain the pile, protect against spontaneous combustion, the spread of fires if they occur, and return the coal to the reclaim system as required, plus many of the small chores around the facility.

Based on the research background of 1303 working face return air roadway in Jinyuan Zhaoxian Mine, Shaanxi Province, a method of determining the reasonable spacing of boreholes is proposed based on the stress transfer degree of coal above and between boreholes, combined with the law of plastic zone and energy evolution by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. After drilling pressure relief, the average daily energy of microseismic events decreased by 70%, and those with microseismic energy greater than 104 J decreased by 99.2%. The research has a strong guiding significance and research value for determining the reasonable distance of borehole pressure relief.

Abstract The consumption of barytes in certain paints polyurethane foams, seamless, flooring, glass, brake linings, plastisol caskets for food containers and in fluids used for gastrointestinal X-ray examinations rely on tie unique properties of barium sulfate, There are no readily available mineral substitutes. Barytes are also the essential raw material for the manufacture of industrially important barium chemicals. High quality barite ore has become scarce throughout the world. Processing ore into quality end products is both capital and energy intensive. These factors have tended to limit availability and increase prices which have encouraged the use of alternates and restricted market growth.

Wet-drum magnetic separators are used extensively for upgrading iron ore and for magnetite recovery in dense-medium separation circuits. In this study, the performance of a continuous, laboratory wet-drum magnetic separator was evaluated both with and without the application of ultrasonic energy when processing dense medium slurries. Test variables included magnetic-to-nonmagnetic ratio, solids concentration and nonmagnetic material.
