Introduction A prime goal in the design and operation of uranium milling waste or tailing disposal systems is to mitigate adverse effects of tailing liquid on the adjacent groundwater. Adverse effects are often defined as modifying the groundwater quality in such a manner as to have detrimental health effects on downstream users. To accomplish this goal, the following three types of systems are employed with regard to the seepage and groundwater aspects of waste disposal: Type I Systems Seepage is allowed to occur unabated from the tailing disposal facility. Detrimental radionuclides and chemical elements are prevented from causing adverse downstream effects by natural purification actions in the subgrade geologic materials and the near zone groundwater. Monitoring is required to assure the predicted natural purification is occurring. The consequences of seepage loss is minimal since the m be predicted with current investigation and analytical techniques and can be evaluated as to effectiveness during operations. Type II Systems Seepage is partially retained in a waste impoundment or leakage from a designed retention system is anticipated. Natural purification is relied on for controlling migration of detrimental radionuclides or chemical elements, or contingency planning is employed to collect and return the tailing liquid to the impoundment. Installation efforts and concern for escape of tailing liquid are greater than for Type I systems, but extra precautions to preclude all seepage are not implemented. Monitoring is required to detect leakage and/or assure the natural purification of escaping tailing fluid. The consequence for accidential excusions are moderate, and will be excessive only if massive system failure occurs. Differential reduction and expansion or shrinkage of hematite under the influence of intimately associated foreign oxides may be a source of stress formation and sinter degradation during blast furnace reduction. To study specific effects, synthetically pre-pared hematite powder evenly doped with 1% by weight of several elements present as oxides, was pressed into tablets and sintered at high temperature prior to reduction. Continuous thermo-gravimetric and dilatometric analyses were per-formed on the sintered tablets as these were being subjected to reduction under simulated blast furnace time/temperature/gas composition conditions up to 1183 K. These findings were coupled with observations on the microstructure of tablets removed from various stages of the reduction process.

It has been suggested that we at the University of Arizona present a paper covering the origin, philosophy, and results of the College of Mines program in the field of computers and operations research. I have worked with the program since its beginning, and I will try to outline the developments as they have taken place. The formal development of the educational and research program in the field of Operations Research and Computer Applications at the College of Mines, University of Arizona, began in early 1957. During the year, the University offered its first formal instruction in computer programming. This was my first introduction to computers, and it did not take long to realize that this new tool had a potential that could be profitably utilized by the mining industry. In March 6f 1957, the University Computing Center began operations with its IBM 650 computer. This machine was the only computer of this size in the local area at this time, The first programming effort was in machine language and the programming cost could only be justified for repetitive-type of problems. The progress in the computer field moved very rapidly and with the development of the many compiler and assembly programs and the addition of sub routines to the computer library, the scope of problems that could profitably be investigated by computers expanded rapidly.

Latin America is in the path of economic growth characterized by increased privatization, joint-venture projects, and reduced trade barriers. Privatization is changing the industrial operating mode from Government-owned/Government-operated to a privately-owned/government-regulated regime. The establishment of joint ventures, such as in construction and management of infrastructure, energy and mining projects, and deregulated industries (electricity/gas/ telecommunications), is now a common practice in the region. These changes, coupled with the growing awareness of environmental protection issues, have led to a sincere effort on the part of the countries of Latin America to establish reasonable environmental regulations and controls (RERCs) for all industries, including mining and energy, for the benefit of present and future generations. However, RERCs require further consideration of many factors with respect to environmental, geologic, economic, and social impacts in the region. The process must find a balance between the need to sustain profitable operations and the need to adequately protect the environment. While striving to find a balance between continued industrial profitability and environmental protection, the RERCs must be scientifically sound, pragmatic, flexible, and enforceable. There has been worldwide attention focused on the environment, and international symposia have been held on such issues as global warming, water pollution, air pollution, and hazardous wastes. Organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and the Organization of American States have performed rather extensive studies on the environment for various industries and activities, and have developed some broad general plans to address environmental concerns. This technical information is available for the asking, and should be considered a starting point for countries embarking on the passage and enforcement of their own RERCs.

This chapter deals with the Mine Safety and Health Administrations's (MSHA] concern and obligations with regard to asbestiform minerals. Asbestiform minerals are defined as the magical group of hydrated, silicate minerals that possess a fiberlike structure capable of being woven into cloth. Their unique combination of properties, such as resistance to heat and chemical attack, high tensile strength, and flexibility was recognized centuries before Christ. Pausanias, the early Greek geographer, speaks of golden lamps, made about 430 BC, with in- combustible wicks of Carpathian flax. The Ro- mans used asbestos as cremation clothes to con- serve the ashes of deceased persons of rank. Charlemagne had an asbestos table cloth that he used to pass through fire to clean (Lanza, 19381. Early recognition of the health hazards associated with exposure to asbestos was documented in the first century by Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist, and Strabo, a Greek geographer. Both wrote of slaves with sickness of the lungs, whose occupation was that of weaving asbestos into cloth. This concern for the health of asbestos workers disappeared over the ages. Today, with the use of modern technology, asbestos products have been greatly exploited. The asbestos output has increased over a hundredfold in the past 70 years. World production has jumped from 454 t/y (500 stpy) in 1900 to 4.5 Mt/y (5 million stpy) in 1978. An increase in health problems for asbestos workers accompanied this increased usage. However, it was not until the modern era that the association of asbestos with chronic respiratory disease was rediscovered. Reports were published at the turn of the century documenting the effects of asbestos exposure on textile workers. One such report in 1907 by H.M. Montague Murray described the post mortem findings on a 34-year- old carding machine operator. Murray de- scribed the lungs as showing extensive diffuse pulmonary fibrosis spicules of asbestos. Subsequently, more reports of pulmonary fibrosis following inhalation of asbestos were published, including an epidemiological study of asbestos miners in 1930 (Merewether and Price, 1930), at Thetford, Que., Canada. This study took place at the mine 52 years after large-scale mining of asbestos had begun. But, the cancer- producing potential of asbestos was not established until 1949 when a report by Merewether in England described an excess of cancer of the lung and pleura [the lining of the lungs) among individuals dying from asbestosis (Merewether, 1949). In the past decade much attention has been focused on asbestosis, mesothelioma, and bronchogenic carcinoma, as the three major biological effects associated with asbestos ex- posure. Parenchymal and pleural asbestosis is a fibrosis in the substance of the lung with thickening and often calcification of the membranes lining the thoracic cavity. Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor of the membranes lining the thoracic or abdominal cavities, and bronchogenic carcinoma is a cancer of the lung tissue itself. These diseases occur in various degrees and combinations. The severity and occurrence of these biological effects are directly influenced by conditions such as dose response relationships, intensity of exposure, duration of exposure, lapse of time since initial exposure, and cigarette smoking. Numerous studies indicate that the relationship between these conditions and the incidence of disease is proportional. Congress has recently concluded (Congressional Record, 1979) that, "exposure to asbestos fibers has been identified as significantly in- creasing the incidence of cancer and other severe or fatal diseases such as abestosis." Congress conveys its concerns for the safety and health of the nation's miners through the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 in which it gave MSHA the authority to set safe

The Cripple Creek diatreme-intrusive complex is known primarily for its vein telluride-gold ores and, for major veins, their great vertical range (>990m). Less well-documented are the ores dispersed into the wallrocks adjacent to veins, the ores associated with hydrothermal and tectonic breccias, or mineralized zones within fluvial, lacustrine, and volcaniclastic rocks deposited within the diatreme complex. The ore-gangue minerals Here precipitated from oxidized, alkaline fluids that yielded an abundance of carbonate, sulfate, and oxide minerals along with minor base metal sulfide and precious metal telluride-s. Wallrock alteration is quite limited adjacent to veins and somewhat more extensive within hydrothermal and tectonic breccias.

As can be guessed from the subtitle, this paper will not be a geologist's one since neither of the authors is a professional geologist. This will be an attempt to present the various aspects of the legal, economic and geological setting that condition the exploration for mineral resources in Haiti. Before going any further, we are going to present a summary of our rather short mining history. One must first mention that Caribbean countries are latecomers to the mining business. If we go back to the colonial period (1500-1600's) there are net many traces of mining activity. The major exception to this is the recovery of alluvial gold in Hispaniola, Puerto-Rico and Cuba and also some sporadic copper mining in Hispaniola (notably in Haiti near the city of Gonaives and in some of the old mining districts in Santo-Domingo). These easily minable deposits were quickly exhausted and mining quite naturally came to an end as agriculture rose as the major economic activity. In the Haitian case, aside from very erratic mention during the 19th Century of the presence of some minerals (i.e. haematite, chalcopyrite) no serious geological work was undertaken. In the meantime, the peasants in the northern part were still looking for alluvial gold in some streams but this amounted to next to nothing. One has to come to the 1920's to find the first comprehensive geological survey. At the time, the country was under the military control of the United States. The American Government sent a team from the U.S.G.S. headed by the late W. Woodring to initiate a survey of the country. Given the lack of transportation, this was a tough task and Woodring and his associates did it magnificently. As a result of their efforts, they published a very thick piece of work of more than 600 pages. "The Geology of the Republic of Haiti" although it was published in 1924 is a classic and is a must for anyone interested in the geology of Haiti.

The purpose of this paper is to present a design procedure for the quantitative estimation of support load requirements in underground mines. Emphasis is upon the basic features of support behavior common to a large variety of support systems-bolts, timber sets, stope fill, steel arches, concrete liners and so forth. A strong reliance is placed upon fundamental principles and modern computing techniques for their quantitative implementation. Example problems illustrate the approach. Where artificial support is required, the ground in the vicinity of the face usually stands unsupported long enough for the support to be installed. At the time of installation, the load transferred to the support from the adjacent rock is essentially zero, although in some cases there may be an initial set load, for example, from timber blocking. With the passage of time and advance of the face, ground motion loads the supports. If the support system is properly designed, then the additional loading poses no threat to the safety and productivity of operations. If not, then difficulties may arise including high maintenance costs, hazardous work conditions and reduced productivity. Of course, over-design can be equally wasteful. Quantitative estimation of support loads is therefore essential to overall efficiency in mining.

"Coagulants rich in ferric sulfate can be obtained from pyrite-containing coal tailings using a biohydrometallurgical process. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between quantity of pyrite and rate of oxidation, with regard to the consequent production of ferric sulfate for potential use as a coagulant for water and wastewater treatment. Leaching experiments were carried out on the laboratory scale on four coal tailings with different concentrations of pyrite. Characterization of the coal tailings was conducted for the following parameters: total sulfur, pyritic sulfur, sulfate sulfur, organic sulfur, and elemental analysis of CHN (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen). The samples were also subjected to X-ray diffraction analysis to assess their mineral compositions. The leaching experiments were accomplished using a laboratory column constructed as a packed bed reactor with a sprinkling system in a closed circuit. After four weeks of leaching, the liquor was filtered and evaporated to an iron concentration of about 12 percent w/w, which is typical of the ferric sulfate coagulants commercialized in Brazil. IntroductionCoagulants used for the treatment of water and wastewater are predominantly inorganic salts of ferric iron and aluminum. Aluminum salts, including aluminum sulfate and aluminum chloride, and prehydrolyzed metal-ion reagents, such as polyaluminum sulfate (PAS) and polyaluminum chloride (PAC), are the coagulants most widely used for water treatment (Bratby, 1980; Tchobanoglous et al., 2003; Buzin et al., 2014).However, the presence of residual amounts of aluminum in drinking water has been controversially implicated in neurological diseases (Association of California Water Agencies, 2000; Becaria et al., 2006; Campbell, Hamai and Bondy, 2001; Rondeau et al., 2000; Walton, 2006). A possible alternative is to use iron-based coagulants, such as ferric chloride, ferric sulfate or polyferric sulfate, instead of the aluminum salts (Jiang, Graham and Harward, 1996; Jiang and Graham, 1998). Iron-based coagulants are commonly produced by the acid dissolution of iron scraps or iron ore (Tchobanoglous et al., 2003).Recent studies have shown that it is possible to produce ferric sulfate coagulants from the pyrite present in coal tailings through a biohydrometallurgical process (Colling et al., 2011). The main advantage of this process is that it does not require acid addition, which can be favorable in terms of production costs. Acidophilic bacteria, such as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, can increase the rate of pyrite oxidation and dissolution by several times (Kontopoulos, 1998; Brett and Jillian, 2003; Johnson and Hallberg 2003). They can be highly significant in the bioprocessing of coal tailings for the production of ferric coagulants, as their action favors the acidification of the medium and iron leach (Colling et al., 2011)"

This paper describes the results of a digital computer simulation study in which the impact of the proposed truck dispatching on the overall mine productivity was investigated for an operating open pit mine. In the study, the existing operation was first simulated for a one-month period, using both the actual time study data and the computed cycle times. By adjusting certain input parameters to the simulation program, the actual one month production was first duplicated through simulation. Afterwards, the operation was again simulated in a dispatch mode. Comparison of simulation results under the dispatch mode, with the initial base case simulation results, showed a definite improvement in overall productivity with dispatching; i.e., approximately 10% gain for the operation. As expected, the results also showed that the extent of possible improvement did vary with the particular pit configuration being investigated.

Fracture toughness of oil shale is an essential property in fragmentation to optimize particle sizes and permeability distributions in in-situ processes. Fracture mechanics of oil shale has been based on conventional fracture mechanics using notched samples and assuming the material to be isotropic and elastic. Oil shale is a layered material more accurately characterized as transversely isotropic. The senior author proposes to use a semi- circular core specimen with a center crack subjected to three point bending. Singular crack tip elements with isoparametric elements are used. The precracked semi-circular disk is modeled under displacement loading. The effect of crack length on the non-dimensionalized stress intensity factor is investigated by strain energy method, ellipse method, and stress method. Very close agreements are found. The fracture toughness is obtained by compressing the specimen in to failure. Parameters such as oil yield are investigated.

The successful selection of a slurry pump depends on the accuracy and completeness of the information provided for the application. Inaccurate or incomplete information can result in incorrect pump selection and / or operational problems. Some information is more critical to the selection process than other information. A full description of the slurry (liquid -solid mixture) including the particle size distribution and maximum concentration, the flow, head and NPSH requirements are most important for successful slurry pump selection and operation. Common problems resulting from improper slurry pump selection will be discussed to illustrate the need for correct selection requirements.

The reclamation of surface land areas disturbed during the course of coal recovery became a major, universal consideration upon the implementation of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. This legislation not only established reclamation as an absolute requirement, but also presented guidelines for reclamation standards and required bond-posting procedures to assure completion of the reclamation process. The Office of Surface Mining was established to enforce the provisions of the Congressional mandate by promulgating specifically detailed regulations and supervising the State participation in this regulatory process. The major operational consequences of the reclamation-related provisions of the Act and the OSM regulations are the increased costs and complex procedures necessary to accommodate the regulatory authorities. It is anticipated that many of these costs and procedures have not been adequately evaluated by either the coal operators or the regulatory bodies. It is, therefore, necessary to proceed with an examination of the general reclamation processes, the effect of these processes on product costs, and the methods, if any, which may be utilized to minimize their impact on the overall operation.

"The electrokinetic and flotation behaviors of ilmenite using lead ions as the activator and sodium oleate as the collector were studied. The results of microflotation show that the flotability of ilmenite can be improved by lead ions obviously. The isoelectric point of ilmenite increases from 5.32 to 7.7 after the addition of lead ions because of the adsorption of Pb2+ and Pb(OH)+. The results of zeta potential measurements and the collector adsorption density calculation show that the adsorption of sodium oleate on the ilmenite surface via chemisorptions in addition to electrostatic interactions. Besides, the adsorption density calculation results show that as the addition of lead ions as the activator, the adsorption amounts of collector are greater than those without activation which is in aggrement with the flotation behaviors. INTRODUCTION Ilmenite, as an oxide mineral of formula FeTiO3, is usually used as the main resource of the extraction of titanium (Bulatovic and Wyslouzil, 1999). There are many researches showing that the conventional methods, such as gravity separation, magnetic separation and flotation, do not work efficiently as expected (Mehdilo et al., 2015; Zhu et al., 2011). Nowadays, to produce ilmenite concentration feasibly and efficiently, these separation methods above are combined for a reason that the raw ilmenite ores are characteristic of poor, fine and complicated. Moreover, surface modification, such as surface dissolution method, microwave irradiation and oxidation roasting, is applied to improve the flotability of ilmenite currently (Welham and Llewellyn, 1998; Zhang and Ostrovski, 2002). Generally, fatty acid salts are used as the collector for the flotation of oxide minerals and sodium oleate is usually used as the collector for the flotation of imenite ores (Fuerstenau and Pradip, 2005). The mechanism, such as individual ion electrostatic adsorption, chemical adsorption, ion–molecule dimeric complex adsorption, and the coadsorption of ion and molecule, have not been discussed systematically using sodium oleate as the collector in the flotation of ilmenite (Somasundaran, 1983). Under the activation circumstance using the lead ion as the activator and sodium oleate as the collector, the interaction mechanism seems to be still unclear. In the present study, the interaction mechanism between ilmenite and sodium oleate using lead ion as the activator are studied by microflotation, zeta potential measurements and adsorption density calculation. EXPERIMENTAL Materials and reagents Pure ilmenite minerals were obtained from Panzhihua, Sichuan province, China. The minerals were ground in a porcelain mill with an agate ball. Following that, the prosucts were sieved, and the samples of -0.074+0.038 mm size fraction were used for the microflotation experiments. The results of XRF show that the content of titanium element is 30.58%, showing that the purity of ilmenite is above 90%. On the basis of the results of XRF, it is determined that the purity of ilmenite is very high and meets the needs of microflotation"

Preliminary figures from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration show 801 underground metal mines and 490 surface metal mines, at the end of 1981, up from 663 and 383, respectively, in 1980. Preliminary MASH figures also show 207 underground nonmetal mines and 1070 surface nonmetal mines at the end of 1981, compared with 167 and 1092, respectively, last year. In addition, preliminary MASH figures show there were 14,676 mineral extraction operations on the surface and 3845 underground at the end of 1981, versus 14,951 and 3675, respectively, for last year. The number of mines, then, in three of four categories increased significantly, while having a lower net total of just 2% in the other category. And the number of underground extraction operations increased nearly 5% for the year, while surface operations were down less than 2%. But despite operations totals that mostly held their own or showed significant increases, it was a tough year for the nation's mining industry. The nonferrous segment of the industry had a bad year and 1982 may be no better, according to Business Week (Jan. 11, 1982), which adds that a turnaround is impossible unless the general economy recovers. Even then, with diminishing markets and overcapacity plaguing its products, the mining industry's condition "will be far from robust," the magazine says. The basic problem is that nonferrous metals-aluminum, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc-are tied to the most troubled sectors of the US economy. As recently as 1979, for example, more than 40% of all aluminum shipments went to the construction and transportation industries. Last year, these markets were down to 35% of aluminum shipments. And molybdenum sales to steel producers dropped by nearly 15% last year. Moreover, nonferrous products ended 1981 at disastrously low prices. Molybdenum oxide sold at $8.77/kg ($3.98/lb), half its $17.63/kg ($8/lb) price earlier in 1981 and aluminum was listed at $1.08/kg ($0.49/lb), compared with $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) a year earlier. The Comex price of copper was $1.54/ kg ($0.70/lb), down from $3.11/kg ($1.41/lb) in early 1980, in real terms the worst copper price in 30 years. Lower prices led operators to cut their output and increase layoffs, shut down mines, and defer capital spending projects. In December, Duval Corp., a Pennzoil Co. subsidiary, shut all four of its US copper mines until March. Aluminum Co. of America had laid off 7.3% of its work force, shut nine of its 38 smelting lines, and entered 1982 operating at only 68% of capacity. Inco Ltd., the Free World's largest nickel producer, lost money in 1981, an estimated $11 million, for the first time since 1932. And, like Falconbridge Nickel Mines and other major nickel producers, had cut back on nickel production and was operating at only 63% of capacity (Forbes, Feb. 15, 1982). Amax, the country's largest molybdenum producer, had cut production by 20%. And Hanna Mining Co. sold lead for $5.07/kg ($2.30/lb), about $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) below what it cost to produce. Another problem is that copper companies in the next few years must come to terms with problems of aging smelters. Some companies are simply closing them. In 1980, Anaconda closed its 75-year-old Butte, MT, smelter and is shipping concentrates to Japan, rather than modifying the smelter to meet environmental requirements. And oth Phelps Dodge Corp. and Asarco Inc. have antiquated smelters on which they will have to make decisions. The most troubled metal in 1982, Business Week said, will be molybdenum, with no real recovery in sight until the mid-1980s. High molybdenum prices in the late 1970s, caused in part by shortages, triggered overexpansion that will take years for the US market to soak up. On a more upbeat note, 1981 mergers might help stabilize the industry by providing funds for mining companies. Standard Oil Co. (Ohio) said it plans to spend $7 billion on Kennecott during the next 10 years for modernization and expansion. And Atlantic Richfield Co. said it will spend $500 million on Anaconda Copper Co. during the next five years. Another positive note was sounded by T. H. Adams of the United Banks of Colorado Inc. He said he expects the mining industry to experience moderate growth in 1982, led by "interest rate sensitive" demand from energy, electronics, and defense markets. And mining will be helped by "weak, but improved" construction and auto markets. The mining industry will be operating in an economy stronger than 1981, but still relatively sluggish by postwar standards, Adams predicted. Iron Ore Estimated US iron ore production in 1981 was 75.2 Mt (74 million long tons), up 6% from 70.7 Mt (69.6 million long tons) in 1980, though down from the 87.1 Mt (85.7 million long tons) produced in 1979. The mine value of usable iron produced from domestic mines was estimated at $3 billion. US iron ore was produced by 28 companies operating 35 mines, 26 concentration plants, and 16 pelletizing plants. The mines included 34 open pits and one underground mine. Large mining companies use a number of sophisticated analytical techniques for introducing the element of risk into the valuation of mineral reserve sites. These methods include, but are not limited to, sensitivity analysis, computer simulation, conditional probability, and portfolio theory. Such techniques enable the managements of these large companies to have an awareness of the many possible ramifications of their investment decisions. On the other hand, small mining companies and individuals in the mining business, due to limited financial and technical resources, still rely primarily on single point estimates of the value of mineral reserves. These small miners introduce the aspect of risk only through the application of an appropriate "speculative" discount rate. This paper illustrates the application of a technique for the introduction of risk into investment analysis. The method appears to be most suitable for use by small mining companies and individuals contemplating a large investment in a new mineral reserve site.

Historically, the dominant use has been in coating, however, recent developments have fostered a multifaceted effort to substantially increase the pigment component in the paper furnish. Factors responsible for these developments together with their relationship to recent and forecast changes in papermaking technology are reviewed. Finally, some thoughts are presented on the probable timing and extent of these changes as well as their expected impact on the future demand for the common paper pigments.

The use of ground-probing radar as a reflection mapping tool has expanded greatly in the last few years. This tool can now be used to produce near surface information which is very useful to geotechnical engineers. Using the lightweight field equipment now available, it is possible to use the radar within mines and tunnels to obtain information which may impact the safety and production of these operations.

To determine the effect of flux crystal size on the production rate and strength of sinter, batch sintering tests were conducted on samples of both dolomite and limestone of various crystal sizes. In addition, calcination tests .were performed on the dolomite and Limestone to determine the effect of crystal size on calcination rate at various temperatures normally attained in sinter beds. The results indicate that flux crystal size does not affect sinter production rate or sinter strength.
