In beneficiation of phosphate ores it is common to use screening to produce the coarse "pebble" concentrate, and flotation to process the -1+0.1 mm size fraction. The -0.1 mm desliming product is treated as tailings. A new partially hydrophobic flocculant, P(MAAA) latex was developed to enhance flotation recovery of fine apatite particles through selective flocculation.

INTRODUCTION The inherent errors of simple passive track detectors /SPTD/ used for estimation of exposure to the radon daughters /RnDP/ amount to about 30% /Do75/ while for active detectors only reach about 3 - 4% /Ph78, Du79/. The large error inherent in SPTD is the result of strong dependence of its calibration coefficient on the equilibrium Rn RnDP in the vicinity of detector /0r80/. Nevertheless the SPTD shows many advantages and seems to be very useful for to the estimation of individual exposure of miners to RnDP /Do81a/. For this reason the investigations are undertaken to improve SPTD so that it might provide information about the equilibrium Rn : RnDP during exposure. If the equilibrium would be known then one could use a suitable calibration coefficient yielding a better precision of the measurement. So far, some investigations of the improved type of SPTD have been conducted. One was based on the concept of using the so called diffusion barrier permitting to differentiate the tracks originating from Rn and RnDP /Fr77/. Such improved detector has been named a passive differentiating track detector /PDTD/. However, own investigations have shown /Do81b/ that this type of detector cannot provide precise informations about equilibrium Rn : RnDP. For this reason the investigations of the new idea of PDTD have been carried out. The new model presented below is based on the use of the absorbers of alpha particles. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The first variant of the concept is as follows: The differentiating detector consists of two portions of detective foil /track detector/ but only one is covered with an aluminium absorber. Thickness of the absorber is carefully selected so that only RaC' particles /7.7 MeV/ can pass the barrier. The second portion of the detective foil records all alpha particles originated from Rn and RnDP i.e. works like a SPTD. The scheme of such a detector, the so called two-fields passive differentiating track detector /PDTD-2/ is shown in the Fig. 1. It is possible to introduce a parameter that can characterize the equilibrium Rn RnDP, namely, the so called track density ratio /TDR/. Digital camera and computer technologies can be used to monitor mine slopes and provide real-time warning of rock falls. NIOSH researchers assembled a surveillance system using low-cost video cameras and computer software from the security industry to test its effectiveness. The system is designed to signal an alarm when motion is detected and to record images of the scene. Masking can restrict motion detection to specific areas within the camera view; sensitivity is adjustable. The time-stamped images provide a record that can help reconstruct and quantify an event. Video motion detection can augment standard monitoring methods to increase safety in surface mines.

For the mining industry, the Internal Revenue Code and regulations offer a range of choices in arriving at the allowable depletion. Each case is essentially unique. Two prerequisites can optimize these opportunities: communications between the mining company's tax specialists and its technical staff; and an understanding of IRS definitions. For the latter, a logical starting point is consideration of exploration and development, since they precede production and depletion is unallowable prior to production. Criteria for selecting engineering and accounting options for exploration and development indicate the necessity of interaction between these company functions to achieve the most favorable tax position.

Manufacturers of brick and tile are showing growing interest in the possibility of manufacture of a clay bonded block. The block would have the shape of concrete block, but would be made without the use of Portland cement, Instead, the block would be made' from mixtures' of an aggregate and the present raw materials of the brick industry. The finished units would weigh 20 to 30 pounds and meet the specifications for Grade A concrete block. The present status of the clay block development shows one manufacturer actually in production of these units$, two additional manufacturers are attempting production and many manufacturers are actively engaged in development work. At least four major research laboratories are engaged in the development program. There are several different processes available for clay block production. These processes differ primarily in the type of aggregate used or in the type of forming operation selected. I would like summarize these possible methods.

Specific software tools for Statistical Multivariate Analysis combined with real time process data were applied to Concentrator Plant at Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi SCM in Chile, basically to two Mill Lines, each one with one SAG mill (32’x15’8MW)and one Ball mill (22’x36’9.7MW). The main objective was to empower the operator actions using process patterns references instead of process variable set-points. Pattern clustering and the analysis of pattern deviations regarding normal or desired pattern, allows for improvements in process control and the further implementation of soft sensors for those variables not included in the initial model.

Deep "paste" thickeners have been used in the alumina industry for several decades to improve chemical recovery and allow “stacking” of the red mud for disposal. These paste systems have eliminated many traditional tailings ponds in addition to providing better tails washing and better water recovery. This technology is not widely used or understood in other mineral processing applications. However, there is growing worldwide recognition of the advantages of concentrating mill tailings to a “paste”, i.e. a solid suspension that does not settle or segregate. This technology offers several alternatives to the traditional tailings pond such as “stacking” or mine backfill. More water recovery is possible than with high rate thickeners. Process benefits come in the form of better chemical and metals recovery through better washing in counter current decantation (CCD) applications. Obtaining a true paste (non-segregating suspension which exhibits a yield stress) and understanding the handling characteristics for applications outside alumina, are recent developments. Achieving all of the benefits available from a paste system requires careful design that takes into account the specific requirements of the disposal application along with the peculiar difficulties in producing and handling paste. In fact, design of a paste system is markedly different from a conventional system. Project design usually requires the cooperation of experts in several interrelated specialties including geotechnical, thickener design, pumping and discharge design and controls. A successful project must coordinate all activities to ensure that the overall objectives for the project are achieved. This paper describes the properties of paste, reviews the applications, and discusses the design of a complete paste deposition system.

The Hladysz Rock Tester was developed at the South Dakota School of Mines as a portable rock strength tester. The hand held device is placed against a rock surface and struck by a hammer. The impacted force causes a steel ball in the device nose piece to indent the rock and simultaneously indent a standard steel bar also contained in the nose piece. By comparing the two indented diameters the compressive strength of the rock can be calculated using laboratory determined correlation coefficients.

The El Sauzal deposit is a classic, high sulfidation, epithermal gold system located in southwestern Chihuahua State, Mexico. The prospect was discovered by a Francisco Gold Corp. geologist in1995. El Sauzal was encountered as a result of an extensive grass-root exploration program in the rugged, dissected volcanic terrains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, around the historical Batopilas Silver Camp. At El Sauzal, high grade gold is hosted within a series of more permeable, low-dipping, lithic and fine-grained dacitic rocks of early Tertiary age. The mineralization appears to be both structurally and lithologically controlled. The alteration characteristics are typical of a high sulfidation system including kaolinite, illite, alunite, dickite and pyrophyllite. The deposit’s gold distribution, as recorded from drill-hole data and surface samples, varies from 0.2 to 650.0 g/t. The estimated geological resource, as calculated from an independent study completed in 1998, was 3.0 million oz @ 2.03 g/t including a minable reserve of1.8 million oz @ 3.3 g/t.

The renaissance in extractive metallurgical practices for gold and silver recovery is far from over. This is one conclusion of a three year investigation into innovations in Cold & Silver Recovery by Randol International Ltd. (1981, 1983). The six volume reference report reviews a host of new processes and innovative applications of older metallurgical practices. Some of these were summarized by von Michaelis (1982, 1982a). There are several reasons to expect this renaissance to continue. One reason is the nature of gold and silver deposits. The list of known occurrences of These metals is very extensive. There are literally tens of thousands of prospects but over 99% of these are too low grade, too small or too refractory for a viable operation employing conventional processing.

A recent development in underground drilling has been the introduction of the down-the-hole drill, an old and very familiar tool to the surface operator. The idea of moving such a rig underground is not new. Tests were conducted at INCO in Canada and Mt. Isa, Australia in the early 1960's, and St. Joe used one for underground exploration in their Missouri lead mines in the mid-1960's. However, the trend to full scale production programs did not start until the mid-1970's. The first successful North American test was at INGO in early 1973. This led to a large-scale pillar recovery and open stoping program which en¬compassed 25 drilling units by mid-1976. Meramec Mining Company tested a unit using air boosted up to 200 psi (140, 000 kg(m2) in the summer of 1973 which by 1976 led to an open stope and pillar drilling program using 12 units. By mid-1976, production units using boosted air were also in use at Pilot Knob in Missouri and at St. Joe in Balmat, New York. Experimental and utility units were in use in several other mines and down-the-hole drills were being seriously considered for at least one major new underground mine.

Corrosion of steel roof support systems can cause potential premature failure of the support, thus adversely affecting the excavation stability and rock-related safety. An in-house corrosion test system was designed and developed to test full-length roof bolts for material performance based on tensile load capacity and strength under different corrosive conditions found underground. Initially, ASTM A615 grade 60 steel roof bolts, which are the most commonly used bolt material in the United States, were tested with and without stresses in a simulated underground coal-mining environment for approximately six months. This paper mainly discusses the test system, protocol and system shortcomings, and makes recommendations based on the observations and results.

5.1-PURPOSE, PROCEDURE, METHODS, MANAGEMENT Exploration can be technologically defined, with regard to the discovery of new mineral deposits, as all the activities and evaluations necessary before an intelligent decision can be made establishing size, initial flowsheet and annual output of new extractive operations. The purpose of mineral exploration is the discovery and acquisition of new mineral deposits amenable to economic extractive operations now or in the future. A prime objective of mineral exploration, however, is to find and acquire a maximum number of such mineral deposits at a minimum cost and within a minimum time. Immediately upon the heels of a successful ''exploration" discovery follow activities called, first, development, then operation. Under U.S. Internal Revenue Code regulations (Secs. 1.615.1 and 1.616.1) in effect at the time of this writing, which state that the "development stage" has been reached when "deposits of ore or other minerals are shown to exist in sufficient quantity and quality to reasonably justify commercial exploitation by the taxpayer," exploration in the technological sense may well continue after a mineral property has entered the "development stage" as defined for tax purposes. In many instances continued exploration, after reaching the tax defined "development stage," has disclosed additional reserves which justify a much larger, more efficient and more profitable operation than that which would constitute the minimum feasible. Even after a mine goes into production, continued ore search generally will increase the reserves, either justifying expansions in plant capacity or prolonging the life of the operation, but this work (actually "exploration") is normally considered, for bookkeeping and tax purposes, a part of mine development. Each exploration entity defines its own objectives in terms of acceptable mini- mum rate of return on investment for any deposit found and retained, and in terms of which commodities, and markets, are to be involved. For these reasons, exploration programs, and aims, will vary over a wide range, although all have the common objective of endeavouring to create new profit centers for the future. 5.1.2-EXPLORATION METHODS Exploration has evolved in the past several decades into a highly sophisticated and expensive endeavor in which large corporate entities, or subsidaries, normally are directed and staffed by highly trained exploration specialists. In some instances consultants, with expertise in a given field, are utilized to the benefit of such corporate groups. The "grasshopper" approach to exploration-searching only for outcropping minerals and/or investigating only mineral prospects offered by the discoverers of such outcrops has given us most of the past and present mines in the US., but this method is rapidly approaching the point of diminishing returns in areas that have been thoroughly prospected for currently marketable commodities. Environmental regulation of the United States copper industry has evolved significantly over the past three decades and the pace of that evolution is expected to escalate dramatically during the 1990's. The paper examines, from a corporate perspective, current environmental regulation and expected trends including the development of Subtitle D regulations for mineral extraction, beneficiation and processing activities under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. The paper concludes by exploring existing and potential impacts on copper companies in complying with the changing environmental regulatory scheme and responsible and progressive precautionary measures companies should consider to address these issues while simultaneously addressing often competing socioeconomic demands.

The flotation response to amine collector and its adsorption on the mineral surface was studied as a function of pH and collector concentration. The flotation response increased in the order anorthite + intermediate plagih clases + albite, while adsorption of amine obeyed the Freundlich equation r = A.Cn. This adsorption is proposg to be due to a covalent bonding between the AlOH surface pups of the plagioclase altered outer layer and the amino group of the collector. Finally, the study showed thatmtial dissolution of the solid phase provides the necessary conditions for amine attachment on the mineral particles and consequent flotation.

Paper presents project results investigating current techniques for dragline wire rope removal and the development of less hazardous means of performing the task. The cannon is the most prevalent method used in American surface mines. A cannon test program was conducted that used 40-and 50-grain primer cord to establish force produced using a 56-pound projectile. Socketlwedges were separated to establish separation force data. Two alternative removal methods, pendulum ram and portable hydraulic pusher, were developed and tested. Both provide sufficient force to effect separations under normal conditions on draglines with up to 78- cubic yard buckets.

D-LM at Mobile The qualified success of iron ore pelletizing processes has influenced considerations for production of highly beneficiated fur¬nace charges. Such beneficiation would necessarily involve some forms of chemical and perhaps thermal conversion for production of prereduced pellets, preheated pellets, precalcined pellets, and perhaps pellets which contain all of the above features as preheated, prereduced, precalcined products. This type of furnace burden will be adapted within a new ironmaking process to be activated commer¬cially during the latter part of 196$ in Mobile, Alabama. This process will integrate a new pelletizing system with an electric smelting furnace and the pellets will be comprised of a composite charge blended from metallurgical proportions of iron ore, coal, and limestone. Visible-wavelength and near-infrared multispectral image cubes for the Animas River Watershed from Hermosa, Colorado to the headwaters at Animas Forks, Colorado were acquired on June 18, 1996 using the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's AVIRIS (Airborne Visible and InfraRed Imaging Spectrometer) instrument (Green et al., 1998). These image cubes have been analyzed using the USGS Tetracorder V3.4 implementation (Clark et al., 1995), an expert system which utilizes a database of more than 300 laboratory spectra of endmember minerals and mineral mixtures to generate maps of mineralogy, vegetation coverage, and other material distributions. Major iron-bearing, clay, carbonate, and other minerals were identified along with several minerals associated with acid-generating hydrothermal systems including pyrite, jarosite, alunite and goethite. Additionally, distributions of alkaline minerals such as calcite and chlorite indicate a relation between acid- buffering assemblages and stream geochemistry within the watershed.

US coal production increased 3% to a record 832 Mt (917 million st) in 1987, according to preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. Most of the increase was due to the unusually warm summer and the increased coal-fired electricity demand for air conditioning. Drought conditions in the Northwest lowered hydroelectric generation, contributing to the higher use of coal by electric utilities. However, excess production capacity and increased competition from natural gas added further downward pressure on delivered coal prices, continuing the declining price trend of the last several years. Coal production by region Appalachian coal production reached 402 Mt (443 million st) in 1987. This is about 3% more than in 1986 and just short of its 1984 peak. Virginia produced 7% more than its 1986 level, due to increased coal-based electricity demand. Smaller percentage increases were attained in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Ohio and Alabama were the only major coal-producing states in Appalachia that produced less coal in 1987 than in the previous year. In the Interior region, 1987 coal production reached a record 182 Mt (201 million st), about 2% above 1986. Illinois is the largest coal-producing state in that region. Production there fell about 3.7%, primarily because of lowered demand at electric utility plants in Alabama and Tennessee. However, this was more than offset by production increases in western Kentucky, Texas, and Indiana. After falling slightly in 1986, coal production in the West resumed its upward trend to a record 248 Mt (273 million st). Wyoming is that region's dominant coal producer. It mined 7% more coal than in 1986. Wyoming's increase offset the 11% decline in New Mexico production and smaller declines in other Western states. Coal consumption and prices Domestic coal consumption reached a record 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Most of the increase resulted from the unusually warm summer that led to higher than normal peak demands for electricity in the third quarter. Electric utility coal consumption was also boosted by the below-normal hydroelectric generation that resulted from low water levels in the Northwest. These factors more than offset the effects of increased nuclear power generation and competition from natural gas. As a result, coal provided 56.9% of electric utility generation in 1987, compared with 55.7% in 1986. Electric utilities consumed a record 651 Mt (718 million st) of coal. While electric utility coal consumption increased, the average cost of coal to utilities was down, from $1.58 per million Btu in 1986 to $1.52 in 1987. The average price of coal delivered to utilities in 1987 was $35.09/t ($31.84 per st), the lowest since 1981. Coal prices were held down by a glut of coal supplies and by a decline in the average price of natural gas to electric utilities. Coal consumption at coke plants in 1987 was 2.6% above the 1986's 32.5 Mt (36 million st). This increase reflects steel's recent resurgence. Coking coal demand, though, was reduced by the increased use of continuous casting and electric furnace technologies. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants fell from $56.02 to $51.35/t ($50.83 to $46.59 per st). Coal consumption in the industries other than coke plants amounted to 68.2 Mt (75.2 million st) in 1987, slightly less than in 1986. Coal lost part of its market share to natural gas, which was priced favorably relative to coal. The average price of coal delivered to manufacturing plants was at its lowest level of the current decade. It fell from $39.50/t in 1986 to $37.27/t ($35.84 to $33.81 per st). Residential and commercial coal consumption fell to 6.2 Mt (6.9 million st) that is 9.8% below 1986 and the lowest since 1980. This decline is also attributed to the relatively low price of natural gas in 1987. Coal stocks Coal consumers held 169 Mt (186 million st) of coal stocks at the end of 1987, 5.9% above the 1986 year-end level. Most of this increase was due to stockpiling by electric utilities in anticipation of a possible strike by the United Mine Workers of America early in 1988. Stocks at electric utilities increased to an estimated 154 Mt (171 million st) at the end of 1987, 5.6% higher than the previous year. This was much lower than 1984's stock buildup. Coke plants increased their coal stocks by 30% in 1987 to 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st), rebounding from the unusually low inventories of 1985 and 1986. At the request of the U.S. Department of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the suitability of using tri-sets for protecting mine personnel in roof-fall prone areas. A steel-set arch provided by MSHA served as a basis for evaluating the performance of the tri- set. All tests and analyses were conducted according to the arch canopy test and design procedures developed by the Bureau. Theoretical resistance functions were established for the steel-set arch and tri-set and were representative of their experimental behavior. The resistance functions were used to determine the energy absorption capacity of the structures and to predict their dynamic response to impact loading. The dynamic tests demonstrated that the arch canopy design procedure is appropriate for tri -sets and yields conservative designs for both steel-set arches and tri-sets. As a result of this work, it is recommended that tri-sets may be considered for protection against roof falls, provided that the arch canopy design procedure is utilized for each application and that the principles underlying the design procedure are understood.
