Microscopic evaluation of trace quantities of metalliferous phases in flotation products requires counting large numbers of particles. Particle counts of many thousands may be required for precision, but not obtained practically by conventional microscopic techniques. A less tedious microscopic method for evaluating trace sulfides in mill tailings was developed for the O'okiep Mining Company in South Africa. Hundreds of thousands of particles were evaluated by this method called "gross-counting." Gross-counting consists of counting microscopic fields rather than point-counting individual particles. Total counts are calculated by multiplying the average number of particles per field by the total number of fields examined over the entire mount. Total gross-counts range from about 20,000 particles for +200 to 100,000 or more for -400 mesh size material in lucite mounts. Sulfides and metallic particles in each field are identified and tallied along with field counts. Totals for each type of metallic particle are divided by the total gross-count to give volume percent which is corrected to weight percent by specific gravity factors.

The Central City district is one of several adjacent mining areas in the Front Range, Colorado, that contain precious metal-bearing sulfide veins of Laramide (Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary) age. The districts are in the Front Range segment of the Colorado mineral belt, and are characterized by porphyritic igneous rocks of intermediate composition that have intruded Precambrian crystalline rocks in the core of the Front Range. The veins and minor stockworks that constitute the ore deposits in the district were formed largely as fracture fillings. The veins range from simple fissures to complex, branching lodes, and commonly range from less than 0.5 to about 1 m in width. The principal values are in gold and silver. The common metallic minerals are pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, tennantite, and galena; minor minerals are enargite, pitchblende, and gold tellurides. Quartz, cryptocrystalline silica, carbonates, fluorite, and barite compose the gangue. The ore deposits have a well-defined concentric zonal arrangement. A core of pyrite veins (central zone) is surrounded by a peripheral zone of galena-sphalerite vein with gold and silver. An intermediate zone contains transitional veins that have minerals characteristic of both the central and peripheral zones. The minerals were deposited in three stages during a single period of mineralization: uranium; pyrite; base metals, gold and silver. The wall rocks were altered primarily during pyrite-stage mineralization. Sericite envelopes developed adjacent to fractures, and were succeeded outward by zones of argillized rock. The valuable ore minerals were deposited in ore shoots localized by several types of structural controls, principally vein intersections, the physical nature and structure of the wall rocks, and irregularities along the fractures themselves. During supergene alteration, gold was concentrated in the upper, oxidized parts of the veins, commonly to depths of 50 m. The precious metal-bearing sulfide ore deposits are closely associated in space and time with the Laramide porphyritic igneous rocks and are believed to have been derived from hydrothermal fluids related to the magmatic activity. The ore deposits have mesothermal aspects and apparently formed in the temperature range 200°-320°C.

Laboratory testing was completed to determine the effectiveness of a fiberglass cable bolt (FCB) as a cuttable rock support for a continuous, hard-rock mining method. The FCB consists of four Polystal tendons combined in a node/antinode fashion, with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) spacers forming the anti-nodes. The largest ultimate pull-out load achieved by the FCB was 22 t (48,400 lb) at 89% of the tendons' theoretical pullout load. This premature tendon failure is accredited to: • differential stresses within the tendons and • differential tendon displacement. An increase in pull-out resistance for a given embedment length is due to: • increased bond area, • reduced interfacial shear and • "wedge" effect. The critical embedment length was found to be 40% less than for conventional steel cable bolts (SCB) at a 127-mm (5-in.) node spacing. An FCB can have up to a 92% increase in load-carrying capacity over a conventional SCB at equal embedment lengths. The load carrying capacity is equivalent to SCB at a 960-mm (37.8-in.) embedment length. Though the FCB is 7.5% more expensive than the conventional SCB (installed), this cost may be offset by increased performance. FCBs are a potentially viable support alternative for continuous hard-rock mining.

When paraffinic gases (ethane, propane, butane) are used as the gas phase in flotation systems, the initial rate of flotation and recovery are generally increased as compared with air. The mechanism of the effect of paraffinic gases in flotation was studied and it was shown that they co-adsorb with the collector ions on the mineral-aqueous solution interface. The effect of this co-adsorption was interpreted in terms of apparent increase of the effective chain length of the collector by the co-adsorbed gas. Adsorption densities, contact angles and flotation behaviour were studied on the following systems: a) Quartz - dodecyl ammonium chloride - ethane and propane b) Calcite - sodium oleate - propane and butane. The positive effect of the co-adsorbed gases is a maximum at low collector concentrations or where critical conditions for flotation with air prevail.

Discussion by E.J. Garrison A.C. Noble presents a clear and concise summary of the factors pertinent to a competent reserve evaluation of a mineral occurrence. However, I believe that he confuses the difference between a resource and a reserve. By definition, a reserve estimate includes all known economic, legal, mining, metallurgical and environmental factors impacting the recovery of the product(s) found in the deposit. A resource estimate, however, is an estimate of what is there - what is available for exploitation and should not include economic and other considerations. Only after defining the resource, its extent, location, physical and chemical properties, can an intelligent selection process begin of the extraction and processing technologies most appropriate to the circumstances encountered. The early and almost certainly inappropriate application of these often cookbook choices has probably lead many companies to walk away from good properties. (How many mines have been found in others rejects?) An example of the process is the early selection of metallurgical samples, after encouraging values are found in a few holes or surface samples, in an attempt to determine the economics of the prospect. Unfortunately, the sampler does not know how representative of the occurrence the sample is because he does not know what the deposit looks like. As a consequence, the property becomes saddled with a bad metallurgical sample that is often inappropriately used in evaluating the deposit which it does not represent. Reply by A.C. Noble E.J. Garrison asserts that I confuse the difference between a resource and an ore reserve. In fact, this paper was motivated by the observation that resources and reserves are almost universally confused throughout the industry. While Garrison is concerned that too-early consideration of engineering, metallurgical and economic factors will result in dropping properties too soon, some issues that must be considered include: •The purpose of exploration is to discover ore reserves, not to discover resources. •Ore reserves are always smaller than resources. • Decisions on exploration expenditures must be made based on the expectation of the quantity of ore reserves that will ultimately be defined. Noble's Fig. 2 can be used to give guidance as to when it is appropriate to begin reserve calculations. When exploration enters the "flat" portion of the curve, representative samples can be selected for metallurgical studies and appropriate mining methods chosen. It is at this stage that we know enough about the deposit to make intelligent choices of representative samples and recognize constraints on mining caused by the deposits shape, environment and physical properties. Once the appropriate technologies have been chosen, then their cost can be estimated with reasonable accuracy. Early entry of economic and process factors gives the false appearance of reserve status to the resource estimation. It would be more informative and less subject to abuse and misunderstanding if resource calculations were made at a number of cutoff grades. The cutoff grades should be chosen to cover the range of grades found in practice in existing operations of similar type. This would emphasize the open nature of resource estimates and encourage creative evaluation of mining and process technologies. It does not preclude the use of economic, environmental and recovery technology factors in deciding the advisability of continuing exploration expenditures, but would highlight their speculative nature. It is thus hoped that decisions on the future of the deposit would not be made on the presumed suitability of a given technology but on the actually known reality. I agree that resource estimates should be reported as a range of cutoff grades. Since reporting at a cutoff implies application of underlying economics (even by analogy to similar properties), however, it should be clearly stated that resources do not consider economic, mining or cost factors, and that ore reserves will be substantially less. The dilemma of the explorationist is that until the continuity and limits of ore-grade mineralization have been established, it is difficult to make quantitative estimates of either resources or ore reserves. Further industry discussion is needed regarding standards for disclosing early exploration information in such a way as to fairly represent the potential of an exploration property.

Why is there such an increased thrust toward positive multiple use land management and where will it lead? History and purpose of the mining law of 1872. John Marshall discovered gold at Sutter?s mill near Coloma, California, on January 19, 1848, and utter chaos resulted. The great migration of people to the undeveloped western lands had begun. Prior to this discovery, copper, lead, and iron had been the minerals for which the laws were made. With this discovery of gold on the public domain, it became apparent that congressional legislation was necessary. This became even more apparent as each of the numerous mining districts which were springing up in California, and elsewhere in the west adopted local miners' customs to regulate their activities. Although these early miners acted under mining district rules and in some cases state regulations, they were, in reality, appropriating minerals without sanction of federal law.

Power cable costs are only a small part of total mining costs. So many mine operators consider power cable failure and resultant downtime as part of the cost of doing business. But, viewed in terms of lost production, these costs can be quite significant. Now one company, Cablec, seeks to cut cable costs by upgrading the polymer compounding process used to make cable insulating and semiconducting materials. Cablec is the leading manufacturer of electrical power cables in North America. And with about a third of the market, Cablec is the largest supplier of power cable to the mining industry in the United States. To improve its products, Cable has entered the polymer compounding business. In July, it began producing insulator and semiconductor polymer compounds at its plant in Indianapolis, IN. "This new facility provides a quantum leap over conventional compounding methods," said Harry C. Schell, Cablec's president and chief executive officer. "The Cablec polymers plant is producing a dramatically higher standard of polymer compounds that provide significantly higher levels of performance and improved life cycle costs for power cable." Cablec faces tough foreign competition in the wire and cable business. Competing on price alone is difficult, particularly when foreign producers are state subsidized. So Cablec feels the best way to compete is to establish new quality production standards. The company's new polymers plant is one way to do this. By increasing purity control and uniformity in polymer compounding, Cablec says its power cables will last longer and fail less often. A typical medium voltage cable consists of a conductor, conductor shield, insulation, insulation shield, metal shield, and jacket. The conductor shield and the insulation shield are conducting polymers. Contaminants and imperfections can occur within the insulation, at the conductor shield/insulation interface, or at the insulation shield/ insulation interface. Over time, these contaminants and imperfections can decrease the electrical strength of the cable or cause premature cable failure. The effort to minimize the number and size of any possible contaminants begins with pure polymer compounds mixed in a clean facility. However, most power cable manufacturers manually handle raw materials, use ethylene/propylene (EP) in bulk bales, and mix polymercompounds in open Banbury mixers. The quality and uniformity of polymer compounds is also impacted by temperature variations in the mixing process. This results in wide gradations of product consistency from batch to batch and ultimately contributes to power cable failure. Cablec says the improved polymer compounds from its state-of-the-art plant will be the purest and most consistent insulating and semiconducting materials available. The plant itself RCA spent $18 million to build Cablec's Indianapolis plant. RCA used the facility to mix specialty polymer compounds used to make video disks. RCA had two considerations in mind for the plant, cleanliness and uniformity of the compounds. However, when the video disk market failed to materialize, RCA sold the 46.5 dam 2 (50,000 sq ft) plant to Cablec for $3.1 million. Cablec invested an additional $3 million for modifications and increased production capabilities. Today's replacement cost for such a facility is estimated at $30 million. Cablec says the plant will set a new standard for performance and be economically difficult to duplicate anywhere. One of the essential elements of the plant's clean process environment is the air intake system. It filters contaminants greater than 2 um, less than one-fiftieth the current industry standard. All material handling and conveying areas in the facility are air-locked. This keeps out contaminants such as smoke, dust, and pollen. Banks of pneumatic pumps move polymer components through the system and continually filter the air. The plant also has a backup air intake system. No process downtime due to pump failure here. From the time raw material enters the plant, it is stored, transported, and processed in filtered air by an airtight stainless steel system. The stainless steel resists rust and corrosion. This further eliminates the danger of contamination from paint or rust particles in the conveyance network. Our interest in metallurgical applications for activated carbon was thoroughly aroused when laboratory studies indicated that each dollars worth of carbon could retain as much as four dollars worth of tin. Since then other data was developed suggesting many Potential uses in the metallurgical field it is hoped that, the information presented in this paper may encourage studies by knowledgeable individuals in metallurgical operations. Activated Carbon accomplishes its results by adsorption which involves selective removal of materials from solution by holding the compounds on the carbon surface at the active areas. An example of adsorption is the dyeing of cloth where the dye is selectively held on the cloth surface and the concentration in the dye solution is thereby reduced. Many theories exist on, adsorption, but the predominant factors involved in metallic ion adsorption probably are that adsorption is indirectly proportional to solubility and is benefited by high concentrations acting to squeeze out molecules in smaller amounts.

The estimation of TBM utilization rate can be problematic due to the uncertainty involved in the tunneling system reaction to various geology along the tunnel. Moreover, the impact of operational and management issues on TBM performance is unsettled. This includes the occurrence and duration of downtimes and the uniqueness of projects relative to the geology, machine type, backup system, site setup, crew experience, and operational restrictions imposed on the project by localities. The CSM2020 is a model based on discrete event simulation that predicts machine utilization for single or double shield TBM. This model was developed by the Earth Mechanics Institute (EMI) team, using the database of tunneling activities which was compiled based on field observation and measurements in pertinent projects. In the current study, CSM2020 was modified to simulate the workflow of slurry TBMs. The operating principle of slurry shield TBMs is different than open-mode TBMs. The model was verified by comparing results with a recently completed project in the United States. As a result, the model offers reliable utilization rate estimation in different types of TBM by implementing appropriate workflow.

Reconnaissance mineral exploration based on the distribution of ore metals in stream sediments has become a generally accepted method of mineral reconnaissance. This approach seems to work almost equally well in all climates and in all kinds of terrain, provided of course that the ore deposits being sought are exposed at or near the surface and are actively undergoing erosion. Nobody with any experience in the field would question the validity of the concept on which stream sediment reconnaissance is based. Considerable dispute does arise, however, when the subject of density of sample sites per unit area, or sample spacing, comes up for discussion. What is the optimum balance between completeness of coverage and cost? The tacit assumption is frequently made that a greater sample density necessarily leads to more complete coverage and hence a lower probability of missing an important discovery, without regard for the size of the stream sample or the topology of the drainage pattern. The purpose of this paper is to attempt to bring the problem of site selection in stream sediment sampling into better focus, and to present a formula that may help in planning reconnaissance programs.

A new prinicple of side dumping front end loading for underground mucking machines has completely changed the concept of underground loading and haulage equipment arrangement both in production and development work loading. Versatility and adaptability of this type of machine permits combinations with a broad range of haulage means not possible with -conventional overhead loaders. Steel "armored" conveyors serving this type of loader are replacing conventional rail mounted car haulage to give a continuous loading operation and effect important economics of reduced manpower, faster loading rates and fewer working areas for a required production. First used in Germany this easy to control and highly efficient means of placing rock from the muck pile on or into haulage means has advanced the art of underground rock loading more in the past three years than any other advancement since the first successful small crawler mounted air powered loader was introduced in 1954. Bucket type loaders with a relative new side dump principle are gaining in popularity for underground loading. They are replacing conventional overhead loaders in present applications and becoming first choice in new ones. Primarily for hard rock development and production loading they are also widely used in production loading of coal and other soft materials. This discussion briefly traces the historical development of hard rock underground loaders to the new side dump type and its present population. In more detail various applications, loading techniques and the advantages of operation, production and economy with the side dumper in hard rock loading will be dealt with.

The minerals industry contributes to the economic growth, prosperity and quality of life of nations, particularly in areas where there might be limited opportunities for employment in other sectors. However, notwithstanding their economic importance, the minerals extraction and processing industries are considered to have significant impacts on the surrounding environment. In recent years many mines have implemented modern monitoring technology and modelling of the monitored environmental parameters to provide scientifically proven indicators about the state of the environment. The flexibility required by the minerals industry to respond dynamically to a changing natural, social and economic environment has become a major consideration. Whilst the notion of continuous improvement is embodied within most environmental management systems, what is now required is a structured audit trail which tracks the flow of resources through the production process to the ultimate environmental impact associated with their consumption, transformation and disposal. Imperial College is coordinating an EC funded project, which is developing a methodology to minimise the ?full life-cycle? impact of metalliferous mining projects, adopting an integrated approach to production and process design, and the costs involved. In order to develop a life cycle assessment (LCA) system that will incorporate different types of data related to the minerals extraction operations, a data inventory was designed and coded in an object-relational database model. The calculation procedures accounting for the input/output balance of the alternative scenarios for mining production, processing, waste disposal, monitoring, and their financial implications are being programmed into a software system. This paper presents the rational and innovative aspects of this work. The methodology developed for the life cycle database is illustrated for the mining production and gaseous emissions components of the system.

"INTRODUCTIONIn view of a global trend towards urbanization, more and more trunk sewers and combined sewer overflow tunnels (CSO) with medium to large diameters and the corresponding link sewers are currently built and under design. Shielded tunnel boring machines using segmental lining as tunnel support represent an efficient solution for construction of new wastewater and supply tunnels. Especially in the field of sewers, the durability of concrete structures both exposed to any groundwater present on its exterior and to aggressive waste water as well as gases on its interior is a key requirement. Despite thorough research on segmental lining and mechanized tunneling machinery, conventional thermoplastic liners show comparatively minimal progress in terms of practical advancements. This is in contrast with the development of the latest segment embedded high density polyethylene (HDPE) system. Based on experiences achieved, this paper discusses the latest development of an integral protective lining system in respect of material characteristics and its adaptability to both project and customers’ demands. Reviewed performances, as the bondage behavior of the embedded HDPE system at axial stress loads due to acting thrust cylinders during ring build as well as the ability to drain pressurized water behind the embedded membrane, tested at full scale segments, are also presented. The paper is round off by presenting first details of sewer projects endeavoring to utilize this cutting-edge solution for an integral concrete protection, which will be commenced beginning of 2016.CASE HISTORIES ENCOURAGE ADVANCEMENTS Past experience has shown that unprotected concrete surfaces as well as chemical based linings such as coatings, sprayed linings and cured in-place-systems cannot reach the desired life times. Also the fact that in deep tunnel sewer system hardly maintenance is possible, a durable and maintenance free system is required which only can be reached by applying mechanical anchored HDPE (CPL)."

High costs--and high risks--are normal in coal exploration and mine development. But risks and ultimate costs are minimized by foreknowledge of prospective coal seams and adjacent formations. Extensive drill hole programs are often used to obtain needed information. Cores and cuttings from these holes are used to determine coal location, thickness, and quality; they are also used to study physical and geological characteristics of surrounding beds. Valuable as these core and cuttings studies are, their effectiveness is often diminished by loss of recovery or by incomplete analysis. Needed is an effective and economical method for augmenting these studies. Well logs provide information of the type needed for efficient cool prospecting. Furthermore, obtaining these logs in drill holes, and evaluating the data they provide, is both fast and economical. To investigate the usefulness of well logging methods in coal explorations, the authors worked with Mr. Jon Jenkins of Truax Truer Coal Company. Logs were run in a number of drill holes in various areas of the Illinois Basin; these areas provided variety both in coal quality and geologic conditions. The data were studied extensively using computer methods similar to those now used in the evaluation of oil and gas wells. (2, 3) This study was used to produce a computer-generated analysis designed especially for mining problems.

The flotation separation of wolframite from fluorite and quartz is investigated with chelating agents and neutral oil as synergic collectors. Test results indicated that a-nitroso-ß-naphthol has a strong collectivity for wolframite and selectivity against fluorite and quartz. The 8-hydroxyquinoline has collectivity and selectivity also. They both have a better activity than sodium oleate. However, the cupferron is slightly inferior. The synergism of chelating agents and neutral oil looks promising, especially for fine wolframite particles. The activation effect of Fe2+ and Ca2+ ions on separation of wolframite from fluorite and quartz is slight. The UV absorb-spectra measurements showed that the adsorption of chelating agent on wolframite is multilayer, and flotation behavior is related to chemisorption. The chelating agent which bonds to Fe and Mn sits on the wolframite surface, and the reaction between Mn2+ ion with collector is more significant. The essentials affecting reagent activities are the bonding factor and the hydrophobic factor. These factors are discussed by structure-activity relationship theory. The synergism of neutral oil is a secondary collector likely to lengthen the hydrocarbon chain of chelating agents.

Introduction This section of the text presents a general review of the different types of concentrate marketing contracts. Too often the marketing strategy is ignored in the design phase of the project and the producer is left to the mercy of the buyer. Many items such as concentrate grade, impurity levels and moisture content of the concentrate my enhance, or severely restrict the producers ability to make a profit it. Close attention should be paid to the design of the concentrator which can improve the quality of the concentrates, thus the ability to increase the rider of potential buyers can be enhanced. Difficult at best, is the position of the miner who only has one outlet available for its production. Obviously, the trade offs must be evaluated. For example, concentrate grade vs recovery and grind/filtering capacity vs moisture of the concentrate all must be weighted against freight cost to a potential buyer. In addition, the above considerations must be weighed against the capital cost to the miner. This chapter is intended to highlight important articles that are included in short and long term agreements and to give a new miner/producer some insight into hat my or my not add value to the product. Unless the miner sells the product directly to a consumer such as a gold, or silver producer, or to a large enough operation that has a totally intergrated system to make a finished product, most miners are forced to sell to buyers who ultimately will refine and market the product. Types of Contract Agreements There are many types of contract agreements just as there are colors in the rainbow, however, most contracts fall into three basic categories. (1) Smelter Schedules: Designed for the small producer, the odd lot of concentrate, smelter flux and precious metal ore. Albeit custom smelters are becoming fever by the day, because of pollution control requirements and financial difficulties, most remaining custom smelters have a smelter schedule. A smelter schedule is a posted list of charges and conditions that the smelter will buy material from a seller. Smelter schedules exist for copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold (Handbook for Small Mining Enterprises, Montana Bureau of Mines). (2) Short Term Custom Contracts: Large mine producers frequently use Short Term Contracts where the seller has the buyer frame a contract that is tailored to the sellers’ production. The total iron ore production in Sweden in 1969 was 33.3 million metric tons. 31.7 million tons were exported mainly to Western European countries. 27.8 million tons (87 per cent) originated from the mines at Kiruna, Svappavaara and Malmberget, located just north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Planned production for 1970 is 25 million tons during 10 months, due to a strike at the beginning of the year. Present production plans for the next five years expect an annual export capacity around 33 million tons in 1975, including 5.7 million tons of pellets. The mining and shipping at the loading terminals of Narvik on the Atlantic coast and Luleå at the Gulf of Bothnia are managed by LKAB - a 96 per cent state-owned company. 4 per cent of the share capital is owned by the private Grängesberg Company. The railway - 106 miles from Kiruna to Narvik and 130 miles from Malmberget to Luleå - is operated by the State Railways in Sweden and Norway. Comprehensive expansion of the Narvik ore port will be carried through during the next five years to increase the annual shipping capacity to at least 35 million tons and meet the development of rapidly growing ship sizes.

From an engineering perspective, understanding the nature and support mechanism of standing support such as a square/arch set can not only help design the support structure to maintain the roof stability, but save the steel materials and costs of manufacturing, labor, and delivery. Based on the design practices in recent years and successful applications in slope bottom intersections, the authors are confident that the concept of interaction and confinement effect between the steel square/arch set and surrounding rocks is critical in designing a proper steel structure to support an intersection/entry. This paper will detail the design concept and its applications in several underground slope bottom intersection designs, reaching the goals of improving roof stability and reducing costs.
