Rio Algom Limited are currently undergoing a major expansion of their mining operations in the Elliot Lake area. To date this has involved the increase of output at the Quirke Mine from 4080 to 6350 tonnes per mill day (4500 to 7000 tons), the rehabilitation of the Panel Mine to produce at the rate of 2990 tonnes per mill day (3300 tons) by 1980, and the rehabilitation of the Stanleigh Mine to produce 4540 tonnes per mill day (5000 tons) by 1984. In addition, the planning for the rehabilitation of the Milliken Mine to produce 4990 tonnes per mill day (5500 tons) is now underway. This major expansion is taking place at a time of increasing awareness of occupational health matters and has involved very high capital expenditures and detailed planning related to the ventilation system to endeavour the provision of an acceptable environment. The paper discusses the ventilation systems, established and proposed, and relates them to historical and current data on mine air contaminants.

Current coal cleaning technology uses heavy media (HM) for the recovery of coal in particles larger than 1/16 of an inch. Through the use of float sink measurements of the feed and products to commercial HM unit operations, a selection function, sometimes called Tromp curve in the coal industry, can be computed. Since the selection function is a plot f the probability of a particle appearing in the float versus the particle density, the slope of the curve will be sharper at the point where the particle has a 50% chance f appearing in the float. Thus, the separation will be better. Fine-tuning a unit operation or a circuit of unit operations requires that the selection function be accurately known. By current practice, it is difficult to obtain an accurate measure of the slope because, when the selection function is plotted versus density, the data forms an S-shaped curve which lacks data points near the 505 point of the curve. This lack of sensitivity in measuring the slope means that small recovery improvements cannot be detected; thus, only large improvements are measurable. Since most engineering improvements are small when individually considered, but large when aggregated ever many small improvements, this lack of measurement sensitivity rules out the slew march toward improved efficiency. This paper presents a method of analyzing heavy media selection functions resulting in a far more effective measure of the selective function slope. Furthermore, this improved method is applied to a number of industrial coal cleaning plants for both heavy media and heavy media cyclones. Using the work of Hudy (1968), and Deurbrouck and Hudy (1972), selection functions for individual unit operations in each plant are calculated as a function f particle size as well as density.

Power plants that utilize conventional wet flue-gas desulfurization methods produce enormous amounts of flue-gas scrubber sludge. A typical 400 MW power station that burns a high sulfur coal produces 170,000 tons of wet flue-gas scrubber sludge per year. This scrubber sludge is currently landfilled at an enormous cost to utility companies. This material could be used as a raw material for industries that use gypsum, such as the wallboard and plaster industries. However, before it can be used as feedstock for these industries, some of the impurities such as unreacted limestone and silicates must be removed from the scrubber sludge. Froth flotation has tremendous potential for separating these impurities from scrubber sludge. In order to select an optimum flotation process, it is necessary to characterize the surface properties of the major components in the scrubber sludge, which consist of calcium sulfite, calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate (limestone), and silica. In this study zeta potential measurements were used to determine the surface charge of the components in scrubber sludge, with the goal of optimizing a froth flotation process to produce a marketable gypsum product for the wallboard and plaster industries.

Sutter Gold Venture excavated an exploration decline into a mineralized zone in the Sutter Creek gold mining district. Delays in obtaining the conditional-use permit resulted in 7 to 10 million gallons of water accumulation in the decline containing elevated dissolved arsenic. Sutter received a permit to land apply the water after reducing the arsenic concentration to 0.05 mg/L. Initially the water was treated by co- precipitation arsenic with ferric hydroxide. Operational difficulties of this treatment system resulted in Sutter pursuing alternative treatment methods. The activated alumina adsorpting was selected due to its flexibility and ease of operation. Operating and maintenance data and costs will be presented.

The Smoky Valley Mine is jointly owned by Louisiana Land and Exploration Company, Felmont Oil Corporation and Case Pomeroy Company. Copper Range Company, a subsidiary of L.L. & E. is the operator of the mine. The mine is located about 60 miles (100 km) north of Tonopah, Nevada on Highway 376 (formerly 8A) in the Big Smoky Valley on the western flank of the Toquima Mountain Range In the shadow of Mount Jefferson. The mine is at an elevation of about 6100 ft. (1860m) and is situated on the southwestern flank of Round Mountain, the hill for which the town of Round Mountain is named. The ore is a rhyolitic iglmbrite with coarse gold occurring along fractures and with fine microscopic gold disseminated in the rock mass. Minor silver is associated nth gold. Annual mining is planned at 5.8 million tons (5.3 million tonnes) per year with 2.2 million tons (2 million tonnes) as ore (7,000 tons or 6,400 tonnes per day).

Forecasting mined grade variability from exploration information is a challenging task in mine planning. For effective planning of activities such as workplace scheduling, ore grade quality control etc. development of realistic numerical/simulation models of in-situ variability from exploration information is an essential first step. Geostatistical conditional simulation (GCS) is one of the well known methods to develop these simulations. Recently, stochastic fractal models based on the assumptions of scale-in variance and self-similarity have been used for developing simulations of several natural phenomena. It has been suggested that these models might permit generation of short-scale variability information from exploration data with greater fidelity when the data satisfies the attendant assumptions. In this paper the stochastic fractal models are reviewed and their relationship to geostatistical variogram models is examined. A comparison of the two simulation techniques has been per-formed using coal sulfur data from a mined out coal property. The results of this comparative analysis are also presented in the paper.

In June, 1981 the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) issued a report titled "Control Systems in Coal Preparation Plants" to determine the status of instrumentation and automation systems in the coal preparation industry. EPRI concluded that the control systems presently being employed in the U.S. coal preparation plants "are relatively primitive compared with those in other mineral processing industries; and analytical instrumentation is virtually non-existent". Until recently, clean coal has had a low selling price and satisfying the purchasers' specifications required only minimum cleaning. However, it is becoming more apparent that the increases in coalfired utility power plants forced outage rates are relative to the deterioration in the quality of fired coal. Utility companies are becoming aware of the economic value of reducing the variability of ash, moisture and sulfur in steam coal purchase orders. New contracts are currently being negotiated between electric utilities and coal producers that include provisions for increased penalties if the product does not meet specifications. With tighter specifications on the quality of steam coal, interest is increasing in more sophisticated control systems. One type of device that is currently assisting the preparation plant operator optimize and control the coal cleaning process is nuclear based instrumentation. Nuclear instrumentation includes methods for measuring weight, level, and density as well as for performing elemental analysis on coal. This paper discusses the various types and applications of nuclear instrumentation currently in use in the coal preparation industry.

The mill is situated on a hillside overlooking Tucson and the Santa Cruz Valley, the ground generally sloping northeast at a 2.5 percent grade. The synthetic rock mass (SRM) approach and discrete fracture network (DFN) model, generated from the field surveys, are novel methodologies to study fracture rock mass behavior. In this paper, SRM and DFN methodologies were used to understand the influence of natural fractures on the mechanical response and failure mechanisms of stone mine pillars. First, a multi-stage up-scaling procedure with the homogenization process is established. Later, a stochastic sampling process on the SRM model to have further insight on the stone mine pillar mechanics is performed. Two-dimensional Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) is utilized to represent intact rock with the Voronoi-Trigon discretized blocks and to capture fractured rock mass behavior. The laboratory-size limestone mine rock specimens are systematically up-scaled to the average width of the field-size stone mine pillars. Then, the DFN model, generated from field data, is sampled to construct the SRM of the field-size pillars. By doing so, the effect of discrete discontinuities on pillar stability is studied by assessing the pillar strengths and failure mechanisms in various width-to-height ratios.

Introduction The vibration energy that travels beyond the zone of rock breakage is wasted - all it does is cause damage and annoyance. Under favorable geologic conditions, this energy may travel many kilometers before it finally drops bellow the background noise level. This has forced the introduction of more restrictive limits to the allowable vibration levels. To maintain the profitability of a mine or quarry and to comply with environmental protection legislation, blasting needs to be performed in a more predictable way that will ensure that the final results are optimal in both mining and environmental terms. Minimization of ground and induced structural vibration is, therefore, a matter of good blasting practice -not just an attempt to avoid complaints from neighbors. A new approach to blast vibration minimization is presented. The method utilizes the existence of the local minimums in the frequency spectrum of single-hole blast vibration. The results are presented as a delay map showing maximum ground or structural vibration velocity for many combinations of interhole and interrow delays. A blast engineer can use this map to select an optimal combination of delays that will produce a low vibration velocity at a selected location and, at the same time, will be acceptable from the point of view fragmentation or muck pile shape. Response of structures A typical single-story building has two distinctive forms of vibration. The first form is a translatory vibration of the building superstructure (frame), and the second form is a flexural-bending vibration of the structural elements such as walls and floors (Siskind et al., 1980). Walls and floors will have several modes of oscillation. The most important is the fundamental mode of the vibration, as this mode will have the lowest frequency, the largest amplitude and will cause the largest deformations. The vibration of walls and floors is also a source of secondary vibration within a building, due to the movement of loose objects, e.g., furniture and wall fittings (Dowding, 1985). The subjective estimate of the amplitude of a vibration by the occupants of a house will be unrealistically high due to the effect of the secondary vibrations. It is now well recognized that human perception of ground vibration begins at levels that are far below those that will produce minor damage to the most fragile structures. In mining and quarrying operations, complaints regarding vibration levels tend to be determined more by human perception or annoyance rather than by observations of damage. Ground vibrations on the order of 0.08 mm/s (0.0032 ips) (Walter and Walter, 1979; Murray, 1987) can be felt, and they are often subjectively estimated to be about 100 times greater. Amplification of ground vibration in the structure depends on the amount of energy in the ground vibration spectrum that is in the vicinity of the structure's resonant frequencies together with the damping ratio of the structure at these particular frequencies. One way to avoid significant vibration amplification in a structure is to shift the dominant part of the ground vibration away from the resonant frequency range of the structure. The presented method allows for the selection of the optimum blast timing (interhole and interrow delay times) to minimize the resultant ground vibration amplitudes in a given frequency range. It also allows the selection of suboptimal, but still acceptable, blast delay times, which may be preferable from the point of view of overall blast performance. Determining frequency ranges of importance in structures In attempting to avoid amplification of vibrations in the structure, ground vibration amplitude of frequencies close to the resonant frequencies of the building needs to be minimized. The width of the frequency-minimization region is determined by the value of damping in the building. If the damping ratio is low, then the frequency-minimization region around the resonant frequency will be relatively broad. By shifting the dominant part of the ground-vibration energy into the frequency region much higher than the resonant frequency of the building (1.5 to 2 times), it is possible to achieve efficient vibration isolation of the building. In such cases, the structural dynamic amplification of ground vibration will be less than unity. The first step in this minimization process is the determination of the structural resonant frequency. Mine planners are under pressure to evaluate the impact of changing economic times and newly acquired data on the mine plan. Incorporating change, such as commodity prices, customer sales, changing cost assumptions, and newly acquired geologic data into the mine plans requires quick turn-around for model building and planning to keep the mine plan on pace with changes as they are occurring. Because of the length of time required to perform some of the geologic modeling and mine planning tasks, planning frequency may not be keeping pace with the frequency of change. This paper discusses how one company has increased the frequency rate and accuracy of mine plans to keep current with incoming data, ensuring mine plans reflect the latest information, thereby minimizing or eliminating production cost variance.

Attrition milling, once employed exclusively for the dispersion of pigments, has in recent years found a host of new applications in the area of mineral processing and mineral-pigment production. Broadly categorized, attrition milling is divided into two classes, as defined by the machinery's function, vibratory milling and rotational milling. Each mill type has been defined as a variation on ball milling and the terms, "vibratory ball mill" and stirred ball mill" appear in the literature. The primary design differences between attrition and ball mills are: (1) a stationary canister (or shell) (2) smaller grinding media (3) grinder energy is motor limited rather than gravity limited (4) strong media/feed size dependance.

In the spring of 2009, Suncor Energy Inc. technical personnel saw an opportunity to improve planning and mining of overburden material in order to address aggressive construction goals and increased mining complexity. By tying together current and historical equipment performance, geological model information, and material observation in the field new operating elevations for the shovels were developed. At the same time, methodology of recording and reporting overburden movement through the Modular Mining DISPATCH system was changed. The result of this first stage of improvements was an increase in construction-grade material available at the face. The personnel involved realized that other opportunities were available to build on the initial successes and establish processes that would stand up to attrition and experience levels. A cross-functional technical team was assembled to identify ways of further improving workflows around overburden mining. Some of the opportunities realized include greater alignment between planning, reporting and operations as well as development of reporting tools that help steward Mine Operations to the plan. All of which have resulted in Suncor meeting or beating its forecast overburden targets. The cross-functional technical team continues to seek out new and better ways of doing business so Suncor can continue to deliver on its commitment of outstanding performance and results.

The past few years have produced a rash of demands for changes in America's way of doing things. From manufacturer to consumer, the rules have been changed. Some of the demands were needed and, when legislated to requirements, did manage some good for all concerned. Other demands made by zealots and taken up by regulatory agencies have forced costly changes on our way of life. No segment of industry has been exposed to more new rules and regulations than the deep coal mining industry in the United States. There is no denying that some good has evolved, but most mining men know that the effects have done more to reduce production and increase cost than they were ever intended to do.

Corrosion has long been identified as a potential risk to the long-term ground support stability due to degradation of internal ground support elements such as rock bolts but also to surface support from mesh, straps, bolt plates, and ancillary support of utilities such as hangers. The emphasis is to understand the corrosion mechanisms on the primary ground support elements and any supplemental steel or arch sets. The water and chemical processes from oxidation(rust), stress corrosion cracking, and even the electrical charge created during these reactions contribute to the corrosion of the steel support elements. The main goals are to mitigate the effects of corrosion and to be able to predict those areas of high water or high sulphide for potential rehab maps. It is also essential to identify and classify the visible corrosion as part of damage mapping and provide bolt testing to those areas of suspected internal damage from corrosion. This is important to get an estimate of the support longevity or expected life before rehab to minimize the overall cost of the operation.

Integrated mining information and process control systems can reduce information delays, enhance decision making and improve the responsiveness of mining operations to, for example, variations in market conditions, mineral grades and ground conditions. This paper examines developments in the areas of: monitoring, data analysis and diagnosis,' communications systems; integrated mining support system;, and process and machine control. It concludes that the development of a comprehensive information technology plan is fundamental to the phased implementation of these technologies. In addition, hardware and software standards and concurrent digital design and simulation practices in selected manufacturing industries are examined and concluded to have relevance to the mining industry. Integrated information and process control systems will lead to emergence of the "digital mine". Such advances in mining information infrastructure as well as mining equipment will enable mining operations to shift from mass production methods to leaner production techniques. "Lean mining" aims to enhance and accelerate cash flow over the life of a mine by focusing on reduction of' throughput times; stockpiles for volume and quality control; and wastage and rework.

To the best of our knowledge, this paper comprehensively summarizes a thorough study to determine the thermodynamic viability of the reactions between light rare earth oxides and chlorine with and without carbon. The kinetics and mechanisms of light rare earth oxide chlorination and carbochlorination reactions are analyzed and discussed according to results in the literature. Lanthanides between lanthanum (La) and gadolinium (Gd) are considered as light rare earth elements (LREEs) in agreement with previous literature and the results detailed in this review. Both laboratory- and industrial-scale light rare earth chlorinations and carbochlorinations, starting from oxides and ores, are reviewed.

In the solvent extraction -electrowinning recovery of copper from oxide or sulfide ores there is a continuous transfer of iron and other impurities from the primary leach solution to the copper electrowinning electrolyte via chemical transfer or mechanical entrainment. Iron is the principal impurity that has to be controlled in the electrolyte by a "bleeding" of the electrowinning solution. This bleeding transfers copper and sulfuric acid back to the primary leach circuit along with the iron. Copper is recovered via the solvent extraction process and generally the sulfuric acid is used as a reagent in leaching. Unfortunately, cobalt, which is added to the electrowinning solution to modify the anodic process, is irreversibly lost through the bleeding operation. This cobalt loss represents a significant operating cost to SX-EW copper producers. DiphonixTM ion exchange resin contains diphosphonic acid and sulfonic acid functional groups on a polystyrene-divinyl benzene matrix. This resin has been found to strongly and selectively extract ferric ion from copper sulfate -sulfuric acid solutions containing cobalt. Thus, an ion exchange process using DiphonixTM resin for the control of iron has been developed to replace the conventional bleed stream process. The new process minimizes the loss of cobalt from the electrowinning circuit and strips the iron into a sulfate based solution suitable for leach solution makeup. In addition, this process can effect a lowering of the total iron concentration in the electrolyte circuit with an associated increase in current efficiency. In this paper, data on the loading and elution of iron are presented. Laboratory and pilot scale data will be discussed along with information on process design and comparative economics.

Lithium-ion battery pack fires pose great hazards to the safety and health of miners. A detailed experimental study has been conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) to investigate the effectiveness of different fire suppression systems on Li-ion battery pack fire extinguishment. Tests were conducted in a well-ventilated container. Two sizes of battery packs (12V, 24V) were heated by heater strips to trigger thermal runaway and fire. Water mist with different flow rates, ABC powder, type D dry chemical, and water mist with F500 additives were used as the fire suppression agents. Multiple thermocouples were installed on the battery packs to measure the temperature evolution during the tests. The results indicated that the water mist with F500 additives is the most effective suppressant among the agents tested. Dry chemicals, however, do quench the fire for a moment, but cannot prevent re-ignition of the battery since they do not provide enough cooling. The findings of this paper can be used to develop safer battery fire suppression techniques in mining environments.

Extrapolation of the rock properties obtained from the cores exploration holes to the surrounding areas often causes problems because of frequent sudden changes in the geologic composition of strata. To address this problem, the author has been developing a method of rapid strength testing "in situ," with application of a borehole penetrometer. This method, as opposed to conventional laboratory testing, does not require rock samples to be retrieved and handled/machined before testing. The results are generated by strength determination on the wall of a drill hole at a site. The newest development is a borehole penetrometer that requires only a 1.38.mm (1.5 in) diameter hole. The small diameter of the penetrometer body allows for drilling test holes with production mine equipment such as roof bolters. It opens the possibility of broad application in coal mines, as well as in hard rock mines and tunneling. The principles of the apparatus are described and are illustrated with examples of its applications.
