In late November 2010, a Laotian landmark was achieved for the country?s first tunnel boring machine - (TBM) driven tunnel. Italian contractor CMC di Ravenna celebrated the breakthrough of a 7.6-m- (25.1-ft-) diameter Robbins single shield TBM for a hydroelectric tunnel on the Nam Theun River. The Theun Hinboun expansion project and 5.5 km (3.4 miles) headrace tunnel will bring much needed power in-creases to Laos and Thailand. . ?Since this is the country?s first machine, it has awakened people?s curiosity and interest. We had experienced Italian and Chinese crew members, but we also trained many Lao workers during the course of the project, as this was something they had not seen before,? said Luca Barbàra, Far East Manager for CMC di Ravenna. The machine broke through on Nov. 21 into an exit shaft close to the intake structure on the river. The machine is now being disassembled and removed - CMC hopes to use it on upcoming projects in the region. Due to the current rainy season and relative low level of the tunnel, the last 100 m (330 ft) up to the intake structure will be completed using drill-and-blast after the waters recede below the tunnel invert.

Quite discrete zones in the soil with sharply contrasting metal value boundaries mark vestiges of bedrock mineralization, and such anomalous soil areas are often contiguous with partially weathered ore. It has not been possible on the basis of chemical criteria to distinguish between an anomaly formed from non-commercial mineralization and one formed from ore.

Industry and regulatory agencies have requested guidance on safe blasting near transmission pipelines. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and Amax Coal Co. studied surface coal mine overburden blasting near four steel and one PVC pipeline of 15 to 51 cm-diam (6-20 in.-diam), monitoring vibration, strain and pressure. Unlike tests of small blasts simulating construction, these were up to 1 t (2200lbs) per delay in 31-cm (12-in.) blastholes. Worst-case comparisons showed that 12.7 cm/sec (5 in./s) blasting vibrations produced strains about one fourth that of pressurization and 10% to 18% of the ultimate tensile strength. No failures occurred from blasting as close as 15 m (50 ft), which produced vibrations over 60 cm/sec (24 in./s).

There are presently in use many grinding mill control schemes and concepts. This paper presents one operating method of controlling the particle size of the cyclone overflows for proper metallurgical results and controlling the level of the cyclone feed sump and new feed rate to obtain lowest unit cost of finished (ground) material which is usually at the maximum grinding mill throughput. This system stresses simplicity of field instrumentation and control strategy. Both of these factors lead to better operator understanding and acceptance. The low capital investment of this system also makes it more attractive at the Buick Concentrator when compared to other more complicated systems utilizing mass flow measurement and a computer to calculate circulating load and infer particle size. Furthermore, it has the advantage of utilizing an actual measurement for control, rather than a difficult-to-maintain inferred value. There are several reasons for maximizing mill throughput at Buick. The milling rate before automatic control was too low when compared to mill throughput increases planned for the future. Through this new operating system, it appears Buick will not have to make major changes of mill motors and speeds to meet the increased? production rate. Also, since power costs continue to escalate, it is desirable to maximize the throughput to the grinding circuit and reduce overgrinding to achieve a reduction in power cost per ton of ore milled. Presently, 45% of the concentrators' total power is consumed in this grinding circuit.

The cluster of gold deposits at the Goldstrike property is located in the Northern Carlin Trend in northeastern Nevada (Fig. 1). At many mature mining camps like Goldstrike, exploration innovation and success may wane with time. In this regard, sufficient exploration drilling was conducted in the area immediately north of the ultimate pit crest and under the final planned pit wall to test for a major deposit. No indications of large deposits were found, however, the majority of drill holes did intercept mineralization. Mining along the northern pit wall exposed significant structurally controlled ore-grade mineralization that had been missed by exploration drilling. In 2002 and early 2003, the mine geology group added reserves to the pit and improved the definition of underground resources by targeting specific ore-controlling structures within favorable stratigraphic units by utilizing relatively inexpensive horizontal RC drilling from the pit wall. The widespread occurrence of mineralization to the north of the pit was re-interpreted to be an indication of continuity of these mineralized zones. In January 2003, 70 feet of 0.332 opt Au at a depth of 710 to 780 feet was intercepted in a dewatering well. This intercept was significantly thicker and higher-grade than average for the area, which confirmed the existence of high-grade structural continuity, and helped secure management support for additional exploration. A timely and cost effective solution was needed to confirm the potential of the area. Immediate follow-up drilling on tighter grid spacing was rejected in favor of improving the geology model. Exploration across the property would benefit from an improved geology model, but to provide results in a timely manner, the area to the north of the Betze pit was chosen as a starting point (Fig. 2).

This study examined the potential of mixing rotary kiln fines (RK fines), a waste product generated when limestone is converted to lime (CaO), with acid producing mine waste to provide 1) short-term mitigation by neutralizing acid produced by iron sulfide oxidation and 2) long-term mitigation by facilitating the passivation of iron sulfide mineral surfaces. Five loadings of RK fines were mixed with 75 g of Duluth Complex rock to produce neutralization potential (NP) added: acid potential (AP) quotients of 0,0.11,0.22,0.66 and 1.1. The mixtures were subjected to wet-dry cycling laboratory testing for 585 weeks. The rock alone produced acidic drainage, with pH decreasing below 4 after about 20 weeks of reaction and ultimately reaching the approximate range of 3.3 to 3.5; sulfate release did not decrease over time. The RK fines elevated pH and inhibited sulfate release for time periods which increased with the mass of RK fines present. The pH of drainage from the 0.11 quotient (NP added1AP) loading decreased below 6.0 after 75 weeks of dissolution and decreased to 3.6 after 117 weeks, at which time the reactor was terminated. The duplicate 0.22 quotient loadings of RK fines decreased below 6.0 after 95 and 170 weeks. The former was terminated after 117 weeks, and the latter reached a minimum pH of 2.8 after 512 weeks. Drainage pH from the 0.66 quotient decreased below 6 after 581 weeks. For the drainages which acidified, the cumulative calcium release prior to pH decreasing below 6.0 was 92 to 103 percent of that initially present as calcium carbonateloxide in the RK fines. The pH of drainage from the 1.1 quotient typically remained above 8.0 throughout the period of record. Sulfate concentrations in the drainages decreased while the neutralizing fraction of the RK fines was present, but increased after this fraction was depleted.

Samples of the same coal measure overburden spoil were obtained from three different mine sites. Site A used a 27-m3 tub-mounted dragline, Site S used a front-end loader and truck combination, and Site C used a 6-m3 crawler-mounted dragline. The spoils were analyzed in the laboratory for the strength parameters using drained triaxial tests conducted on 150-mm diameter specimens. Regression analysis was utilized to determine the appropriate failure criterion for the strength data from each site. Spoil obtained from Site S yielded higher shear strengths than Sites A and C.

This paper deals with the occurrence of basic and ultrabasic rocks and their relationship in space and time to major structures of the earth. In order to introduce the paper properly, I must go back a little and try to put the subject in perspective. In the brief time that geology has been a scientific occupation, ore deposits have been grouped and classified in various ways depending on the theories that happened to be popular at the time. Some of the early scientists said that ore came from fire, other schools argued that ore originated from water. Then came the lateral secretionists and in later years the hydrothermalists led by the Lindgren school and the latter has largely been accepted as the modern concept of ore deposits. It now seems apparent that the hydrothermal school is being seriously challenged by other schools of thought. It also seems that we have reached the point where we should be willing to admit that we do not really know in most cases how the ore got to its present position. However, for practical purposes, we can classify ore deposits as to the environment in which they do occur. This is not difficult and gives the field geologist and the mining engineer something to work with and to believe in, and it gives them a basis for carrying out their field work. "INTRODUCTION In his landmark Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) 2000 writing, “Theory and Design of Sandwich Belt High Angle Conveyors According to The Expanded Conveyor Technology” J.A. Dos Santos generalized the belt conveyor technology to include all possible variations and augmentations including, particularly, multiple belts along a common carrying and/or return path as is the case most notably in the sandwich belt high angle conveyor technology and belt-on-belt type intermediate (booster) drives. Figure 1, excerpted from his writing, represented the proposition of the generalized “Expanded Conveyor Technology,” abbreviated ExConTec.This formed the basis for the generalization which was completed in theory and in math before 2000 and presented by J. A. Dos Santos at the Y2K SME Annual Meeting. The writing can be found in the SME library (Dos Santos J. A., January 2000). While Figure 1 with the supporting mathematical development solved the generalization, it failed to identify the variation that would prove to have the greatest significance. As with most significant developments, necessity is the mother of invention. This is the case with the Adder Snake belt technology, the subject of this writing. BACKGROUND The concept of elevating bulk materials at a high angle using the sandwich belt concept was first introduced in 1951. That introduction did not produce any lasting success. Commercial success was achieved in the 1970s with the Loop Belt, a sandwich belt elevator of C-shaped profile developed by Stephens Adamson of Canada. The Loop Belt was and is the vital element of a conveyor based self-unloading ship system. Such self-unloading ships have had great success achieving unloading rates above 10,000 t/h with Loop Belts of width to 3,048mm (120”). Being strictly of C-profile, Loop Belts could not be adapted to the general high angle conveying path which is predominantly along a straight incline. It was the success of the Loop Belts that inspired the Dos Santos Sandwich Belts of the 1980s. These expanded the Loop Belt capabilities by producing endless elevating profiles that could take the most direct and/or conforming path between the loading and discharge points. Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor systems have seen great success through the years, with more than 200 installations throughout the world."

Slope stability analysis plays an integral role in the design of various mining applications including waste dumps, heap leach piles, solution ponds, and tailings dams. Generally, limit equilibrium analysis using one of the several prevalent approaches is considered adequate. The density, saturation, and shear strength parameters of the materials forming the slope affect the failure mode and the calculated factor of safety (FS) against sliding. These parameters are generally based on laboratory tests. Field practices and construction procedures are often not completely simulated in the laboratory for various reasons (e.g. equipment limits, time and budget restraints, etc.). This paper presents a holistic assessment of slope stability analysis as practiced in mining applications, using example data from multiple heap leach projects. A sensitivity analysis is presented for variations in material properties, data interpretation, and computation methods. For each step in the design process, the possible variations in parameter values were identified and then used to perform traditional and probabilistic stability analyses. This simple, cradle-to-grave-type approach is used to evaluate the reliability of an example design, and the combined impact of multiple uncertainties on the factor of safety. Example Study The issue of addressing uncertainty in geotechnical design has been discussed in depth by numerous authors (Duncan 2000; Christian 2004; Whitman 1984; Christian et al. 1993). One may ignore the uncertainties involved in a design, take a conservative approach, rely on observational methods (Peck 1969), or attempt to quantify the uncertainty. Geotechnical projects in general, may include a combination of these methods. For important structures, such as heap leach pads, it is critical that sources of uncertainty in the stability analysis be acknowledged early on and considered in the overall design approach. As with any project, economics and other physical constraints, such as space limitation, often do not always allow for an overly-conservative, robust design. In an effort to quantify uncertainty and provide a sense of level of confidence in the safety and reliability of a design, probabilistic methods have been developed and implemented in many slope stability software packages. Reliability methods are often used in the design of open pit mine slopes, but not as commonly in designing heap leach pads and waste dumps. As an example, the stability analysis of a copper heap leach project is presented here to evaluate the effects of multiple sources of uncertainty and differing methods of data interpretation. Some of the parametric values, or the variation therein, are assumed on the basis of actual data from multiple heap leach projects, included in the paper as well. A generic representation of the example case study is shown in Figure 1. As depicted in the cross-section, the ultimate height of the design is 114 m (measured from the crest to the toe). The overall slope of the heap leach pad is 1.88 horizontal to 1 vertical (1.88H:1V), or 28°. The slope benches are considered in the overall slope. The example leach pad is founded on alluvial, colluvial and residual soils overlying weathered limestone. The ore to be placed on the pad is characterized as poorly graded gravel (GP) with average fines content (percent passing #200 sieve) of 4%. The liner subgrade is low permeability (fine) soil. The cover or the drainage material, placed directly above the geomembrane (between the liner and the ore), is crushed ore in this case. The phreatic surface was assumed to be 1 m above the base liner, which is what the collection system over the liner is typically designed for. [ ] In heap leach pads, typically, Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is used as the base liner. The decision is based on the elongation, strength and other requirements of the application as well as economic considerations. In this example study, the base liner was 80-mil single-side textured LLDPE. FIELD INVETIGATION AND SAMPLING When selecting appropriate values for the input parameters of the stability analysis, the level of uncertainty in the data and the assumptions that are made must be clearly identified and considered in the design. This concept has been emphasized through an extensive number of publications regarding geotechnical uncertainty and reliability (Christian et al. 1994; Duncan 2000; Christian 2004). The primary source of uncertainties involved in slope stability analysis for mining applications is inadequate geotechnical investigation, often lacking in a thorough assessment of in-situ material characterization and sampling disturbances. To emphasize this point, some background information is presented here. The tradeoff between the costs of a thorough site investigation versus the risks of design uncertainty has long been a challenging management decision in geotechnical projects. For mine sites, significant investment is typically made in exploration and estimating mineral resources and the geology of a mine site is often more thoroughly documented than other types of geotechnical projects. Nevertheless, the engineering properties of the soil and rocks relevant to slope stability receive less emphasis. Baecher and Christian (2003) observed that the areas of geotechnical concern, such as slopes and waste disposal facilities, are usually associated with mine costs rather than revenue, and therefore, significantly less money is devoted to their site characterization and laboratory testing. Longwall mining is a commonly used method of coal extraction that involves the complete removal of large, rectangular panels of coal. Longwall mining causes the immediate seam roof to break and fall into the void created by mining. The convergence of the surrounding strata towards the mining void causes subsidence on the surface. The subsidence magnitude is related not only to the mining depth, the topography, the geological features and the overburden materials, but also to the sequence of the strata overlying a coal seam. In additional to the vertical subsidence which is evident at the surface, there are also horizontal movements inwards toward the centre of the void, which cause the surface to tilt, bend, stretch and com-press. This paper presents a parametric investigation of the influence of the overburden stratigraphy to surface deformations due to longwall mining using 2D finite element models. Models simulate rock movement by applying equivalent edge load to the open roof.

"Can the ever-increasing tonnages of ore and waste being mined today be accommodated simply by using bigger and better crushers? This paper reviews the latest primary crushing and large cone crusher designs. It highlights how—in addition to using the larger crushers now available—maximizing the utilization percentages in each of the four stages of the rock size reduction circuit will assist in meeting the larger production requirements of existing and new mining operations. Its goal is to help consultants and operators select the optimal equipment and custom-designed items in the material handling flowsheet from the mine to the mill, maximizing operating hours per year. INTRODUCTION Are larger crushers the answer to meeting the demands of existing or new mining projects for increased tonnage? Boyd (2002) predicted that larger crushers for primary and fine crushing would be beneficial and contribute to the further development of mineral processing. Larger crushers for primary and fine crushing applications are now available. The rock size reduction process from the mine to the selected milling process facility has not changed since man first broke a rock to get at the interesting mineralization within. The rock size reduction process circuit from the mine to the mill can be summarized in four stages: • Stage 1: Mining (rock breakage and fragmentation) • Stage 2: Pre-screening (scalping) • Stage 3: Primary crushing • Stage 4: Fine crushing (secondary, tertiary and quaternary) Plant throughput and ore delivery schedule will form the basis for flowsheet design and equipment selection. Once the project design criteria and the mine plan have been established, the circuit’s utilization percentage (percentage of hours when the circuit is being utilized) can be optimized for each of the four stages. The mining and process departments are the key stakeholders in the selection of the final comminution circuit, and both departments should be familiar with and contribute to the design of the circuit. This paper focuses on the four stages of a rock size reduction circuit from the mine to the mill, equipment selection, various ore and waste handling flowsheets, and improvements in crusher station design, all with the purpose of maximizing availability and plant utilization percentages. What is a large tonnage? From 1907 to 1914, the American Panama Canal excavated 300 million tonnes of material in 7 years (History of the Panama Canal, Wikipedia). Today’s large mining operations can move the same material in 10 months, using large crushers or multiple crushers for ore processing and large crushers and a mixture of truck haulage and conveyors for handling the large waste tonnages. Disseminated epithermal gold metallization occurs within a breccia unit interpreted to be a submarine debris flow. Cold is associated with oxidized pyrite, fluorite, and jasperoidal silica. A minimum of 9 million tons of open-pittable mining reserves will be cyanide heap leached as run-of-mine ore at a rate of 1.0 million tons per year. Careful evaluation of the combined results of successive sampling projects has established the pit plan, mineable reserves, and process metallurgy of the operation. The sampling procedure utilized for a given test depended upon geological interpretation as well as the procedures, successes, and failures of previous tests. This paper summarizes the sampling and testing procedures of the development effort in light of the project goals and attendant problems in achieving them.

Widespread high-calcium limestones in New Mexico region are low -in magnesium, but some units include shale interbeds deleterious for sulfur removal usage. Thick limestones in Mississippian Escabrosa, Lake Valley, and Leadville, Pennsylvanian Madera and Hermosa, Pennsylvanian-Permian Horquilla, Permian Hueco and Capitan, Cretaceous U-Bar, and some Cenozoic travertines are high-calcium units. Significant outcrops are in mountains of southwestern, south-central, central, southeastern and north-central New Mexico, southeastern Arizona, southwestern Colorado, and northwestern Chihuahua. Coal-fired powerplants are mainly in northwestern New Mexico and eastern Arizona, thus transport is mainly by railroad.

This paper is intended to deal with the material handling aspects of fine coal cleaning as applied to a recently built plaint in: southern West Virginia. This plant is processing 160 tons per hour of 1/4" x.0 coal on a two shift basis. Past experience with this very friable low volatile metallurgical coal indicated that its plastometer readings, varied directly with the size and length of time elapsing between mining' and ultimate consumption. Due to the mines location with, respect to its consumers, little could be done to decrease the time element. Studies indicated that the plastometer readings are considerably less in the minus 60 mesh range than that experienced in the plus 60 mesh sizes. Therefore, handling the coal in such a manner as to have the least amount of degradation became extremely important.

Most of the mineral deposits found in North-East India remain unexploited due to inadequate knowledge on their status, economic viability, and requisite mining technologies. The aimof this study is to characterize the multimetallic magnetite mineral deposit from the Nagaland area in India. The quality of iron ore was evaluated to establish its suitability as a raw material for iron production. Detailed studies were conducted to establish the composition and properties of the samples. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA), and petrographic microscopy techniques were employed in the investigation. Shatter and tumbler test was performed for analyzing the mechanical properties of the ore. XRD studies indicated that magnetite is the major mineral with low amounts of martite, maghemite, and quartz. XRF/EPMA results indicated that magnetite contains 35–65 wt.% of iron and 1–5 wt.% of chromium. It also confirms the presence of Ni and Al up to 1 wt.% and Si up to 6 wt.%. Chromite-rich ore contains up to 30 wt.% Cr and 15–20 wt.% of Fe.

INTRODUCTION Proliferation and enhanced synthesis of collagen by pulmonary fibroblasts have been shown to be key steps in the development of chronic silicosis (Goldstein and Fine, 1986). The regulation of lung fibroblast proliferation by cytokines released from alveolar macrophages may be an important pathogenetic mechanism in the development of the fibrotic process (Kelley, 1990). One cytokine, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), promotes fibroblast proliferation by inducing the movement of quiescent (Go) cells into the C1 phase of the cell cycle (Chen and Rabinovitch, 1989). Others regulate the rate of transition of fibroblasts from Gl into the S phase (Leof et al., 1982). These two classes of cytokines have been termed, respectively, competence and progression factors. One approach used to examine the release of cytokines from macrophages is the fibroblast proliferation assay in which fibroblasts are exposed to culture supernatants from macrophages exposed to various stimuli. In most of these assays, the supernatant contains fetal calf serum which provides the competence factor(s) necessary to facilitate the proliferation of fibroblasts (Bitterman et al., 1982; Bitterman et al., 1983; Elias et al., 1988). Recently, a fibroblast proliferation assay using plateletpoor plasma (lacking competence factor(s)) as a substitute for fetal calf serum has been described (Kuman et al., 1988; Bauman et al., 1990). In this assay, the release of a competence-inducing PDGF-like growth factor from rat and human macrophages can be distinguished from other cytokines that act as progression factors. In order to obtain more consistent results and with the ultimate goal to be able to discriminate between the effects of competence factors as opposed to progression factors, we have conducted experiments to determine the appropriate concentrations of plasma and PDGF required for imparting competence in the fibroblast proliferation assay. We tested lung fibroblast cells obtained from explants of rat lung tissue and also a fetal human lung fibroblast cell line obtained from American Tissue Culture Collection (ATCC153). MATERIALS AND METHODS Fibroblasts Specific pathogen-free, male Sprague-Dawley rats were use in some studies. Animals were given a lethal intraperitoneal dose of sodium pentobarbital. Fibroblasts were isolated by chopping the lung in enzymes that digest the connective tissue but liberate lung cells for further study (Rabovsky et al., 1989). After digestion, the remaining lung tissue suspension was filtered through two layers of sterile gauze and centrifuged to recover lung fibroblasts. These were resuspended in culture medium that contained 10% fetal calf serum and distributed to culture plates for growth. In other experiments, a human fetal lung fibroblast cell line, obtained from American Type Culture Collection, Rockville, MD, 20852, was used instead of rat lung fibroblasts. In these cases, a 1 ml ampule containing human fetal fibroblasts was plated into a tissue culture flask containing medium plus 10% fetal calf serum. For both types of fibroblasts, culture medium was changed 3 times per week and cultures were incubated at 37°C until confluent. Harvested rat and human lung fibroblasts were quantified using an electronic cell counter equipped with a cell sizing attachment (Coulter Electronics, Inc., Hialeah, Florida). Tritiated Thymidine Incorporation The basic procedural outline of Kumar et al. (1988) was used with modifications to evaluate tritiated thymidine incorporation into fibroblast DNA following exposure to PDGF and plasma. Both rat and human lung fibroblasts were plated at 50,000 cells/ml at a density of 250,000 cells/25cm2 culture plate. Cells were quiesced for 4 days with 2% rat plasma. As the assay was refined, fibroblasts were quiesced in plasma-free media for 48 hrs, since the mitogenic activity of 2% plasma was variable. Test medium was applied for a period of 6 hrs, followed by a 24 hr tritiated thymidine (lµCi/ml) labelling period in plasma-free media. Medium alone was used as a negative control and media with 10 or 20% fetal calf serum was used as the positive control for rat and human fibroblasts, respectively. There are many problems faced by ventilation engineers in deep underground mining operations, not the least of which is controlling miner exposure to radon gas and its daughter products. Radon gas is commonly found in uranium mining operations, but may also be present in other deep metal mines. For example, tin mines in England, iron ore mines in Sweden, gold mines in South Africa, and molybdenum mines in the U. S. have potential radon exposures. This is because uranium and accompanying radium ore are ubiquitous to the earth's crust albeit at low levels. The fact that the activity represented by one WL can be caused by a relatively low concentration of radon gas increases the difficulty of control. Since the source of the radon gas is usually widespread throughout a mine, local exhaust ventilation is not a viable control schema. The technique used to control exposure is then dilution ventilation and, in fact, huge amounts of air must be moved in order to reduce potential exposures to an acceptable level. An interesting comparison can be made of ventilation rates in different types of mines. It is estimated in modern coal mines, which are generally acknowledged to have high rates of ventilation, that about eleven tons of air are moved for each ton of ore mined. A typical operating uranium mine may have ventilation flows of 14-15 tons per ton of ore mined. This provides an idea of the scope and importance of ventilation in modern mining operations where radon is a hazard. Further pressure is put on ventilation engineers by the steady downward trend in exposure limits set by national and international standard setting agencies. Much of this tendency toward lowered standards is based upon longitudinal mortality studies of miner populations. Another important factor is the limited number of experienced miners available in the labor pool. For optimum production, it is important to have as many experienced miners underground in each shift as possible. However, the average daily exposure in a U. S. mine must be less than .3 WL to permit the miner to work underground for a full year. The ventilation system then must provide enough uncontaminated air to maintain the WL below the .3 TTL level to maximize production efficiency and minimize personnel turnover and the problems associated with it. Ultimately, the goal of the ventilation engineer and health physicist is to protect the working miner from harmful exposures based upon currently acceptable standards. U. S. Federal regulations require that in uranium mines all active work sites must be monitored every two weeks if they measure above .1 WL. Areas that have .3 WL ratios or higher must be monitored on a weekly basis until five consecutive weekly samples show the level has dropped below .3 WL. Also, exposure records must be kept for all individuals exposed to levels exceeding .3 WL. These requirements provide a strong economic incentive to have a ventilation system that minimizes exposure of any personnel. A good ventilation system requires careful planning, operation and backup in order to fulfill its mission of providing adequate clean air. Its proper operation also requires coordination with production personnel so it can be adapted as new areas in the mine open up and old areas are sealed off. The ultimate indicator of ventilation efficiency to control radon daughter exposure is, of course, monitoring working levels. Historically, this has been done using the Kusnetz, Tsivoglou, and Rolle's methods, among others. These methods all require cumbersome equipment and tedious calculations to obtain the measurements that results in WL. More important, however, they require a significant time lag between sampling and counting, typically 40-90 minutes. This time lag is, in fact, what can cause significant economic losses due to unnecessary downtime as well as high WL exposures. In a typical mining situation, a sampling technician using the Kusnetz method takes a sample, moves to the next location and takes another sample and so on. Forty to ninety minutes after the first sample, the technician will stop, run the activity count on the filter and calculate the WL. The technician may be one-half mile away or several levels removed from where the first sample was taken when it is counted. If the WL ratio is high the technician must then backtrack to the sample position. There are then two options. If the sample area is a working stage, it can be shut down or a second sample can be taken. If the first alternative is chosen; i.e., shutdown and correction of the ventilation, then another sample must be taken, followed by a forty minute wait for results. If the ventilation adjustment didn't correct the problem, then the whole process must be repeated with a minimum of forty-five minutes per sample cycle when using the Kusnetz method. It has been estimated from operating uranium mines that the cost per hour for downtime on a production slope is about $1,50O/hour. The time lag between sampling and resultant data can be very costly. If the second alternative is chosen to verify the first reading, the miners may be unnecessarily exposed to high levels while waiting for the result. Clearly, such a sampling system can be markedly improved by eliminating the excessive time lag between sampling and analysis.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines is improving the reliability of mining and processing equipment through the use of failure analysis and condition monitoring activities. Program results include an increase in equipment capacity and an overall reduction in operating costs. Identifying equipment failure modes and developing associated capital asset management practices can minimize failure consequences. Successful programs have included alterations to management practices, equipment modifications, and/or the implementation of condition monitoring programs. By controlling or minimizing the effects of incipient equipment failures, corrective actions can be taken earlier in the failure cycle. This results in an associated reduction to repair costs and equipment down time. Mining companies invest in their capital assets to provide the capacity necessary to meet operational needs. Over time, functional failures occur that reduce this productive capacity. Diagnostic technologies now exist that allow the condition of equipment to be monitored. Early response to this information minimizes the effects of functional failures and restores equipment re- liability. Reliability is a performance indicator of overall equipment condition. It is most often expressed in terms of mean time between failures. When the established objectives of a capital asset management program include the maximization of this failure interval, trailing indicators, such as availability and operating cost improve. The probability of equipment failure is influenced by engineering design and operating conditions. The performance level resulting from this operating environment is expressed as "inherent reliability." Without maintenance intervention, equipment will ultimately fail to perform its intended function and become less reliable. Therefore, maintenance must be managed as the supplier of reliable operational capacity. Maintenance can only supply equipment performance that approaches the level of inherent reliability. Actually achieving inherent reliability requires that all maintenance decisions are made at the economically optimal time. Enhancing performance levels beyond inherent reliability can only be achieved by altering operating conditions or practices or through physical equipment modifications. An evolution in maintenance management philosophy has been under way since the beginning of the industrial revolution. As equipment has become more sophisticated, so have maintenance practices. At the beginning of the industrial age, equipment tended to be over designed and slow moving. The first maintenance philosophy was one of reactive maintenance. Maintenance intervals were dictated by the operational status of the equipment. As a result, production interruptions were common and capacity needs were met through an investment in redundant capital assets.

This paper describes the development of a trim blast design to improve the stability of a final pit wall. Description is given of the effects of rock characteristics, rock type, and pit plans on the blast design. Currently, six benches have been mined with trim blasting. A more stable final wall has resulted and the successful program has reduced mining costs over an extended time period. Low cost blast monitoring and field observation were used to determine peak particle velocity and blast damage. Using criteria developed from this relationship, trim blasts were designed and evaluated.
