The construction involved in the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), Contract No. lK0011 (K-1), encompassed some 2,621 meters of single track parallel tube rapid transit tunnels, 335 meters of cut-cover subway station and appurtenant ventilation structures at each end, and a fan shaft at approximately the mid point of the tunnels. The construction contract was awarded June 7, 1974 to a Joint Venture consisting of Intercounty Construction Corporation, Hyattsville, Maryland, and S $ M Constructors, Inc., Solon, Ohio. The former being responsible for performing the cut and cover construction, and the latter being charged with constructing the running tunnels and fan shaft at their mid point. (See Fig. 1) The problems of mining and supporting, the 183 meters of twin tunnels just east of Court House Square Station, by unique mixed face and soft ground mining methods is the main subject of this report, although a general review of the tunnels in their entirety, as well as the geology encountered in the excavations, is presented to give a better overall setting for the problems encountered. The testing of different kinds of process flow configurations and cell volumes in industrial scale flotation processes is in general difficult to accomplish and even expensive to perform.1 Also the lack of suitable measuring and analyzing devices often prevents effective comparison of results. Nowadays, the existing flotation processes contain, almost with exception, several return loads which result in difficult control of the process. There exist two good reasons for testing different kinds of flotation circuits at the Outokumpu Oy Kotalahti mine. Firstly it is easy to change the process flow configuration without any additional installation work and secondly, the concentrator is highly automated with magnetic flow meters, on-line analyzer and process computers. In this presentation, open circuit flotation is compared with the classical closed circuit flotation which contains return loads. In additional, the effectiveness of computer control in both cases is estimated and also the effect of cell volume on flotation results is examined.

The occurrence of borates and zeolites at Mesa del Alamo is well documented by McAnulty and Hoffer (1) and Lefond and Barker (2). Further investigation indicates the presence of priceite and meyerhofferite in addition to the howlite (1) and colemanite (2). Analcime occurs in addition to the clinoptilolite and phillipsite (2). The Mesa del Alamo area is about 200 !a south of Tucson, Arizona, and 13 km southeast of Magdalena, Sonora, Mexico, just south of the unpaved road to Cucurpe (Figure 1). The geology and mineralogy of northcentral Sonora is known only on a regional basis except for small areas mapped in detail during copper exploration. The study area is within the Basin and Range province of North America from which borates and zeolites are now produced in California. The borates and zeolites at Mesa del Alamo occur in geological environments similar to those of the Mojave and Death Valley regions of California (3, 4). Thus, a detailed exploration pro- gram in the Magdalena area could result in the discovery of economic borate and/or zeolite deposits.

Large volume, highangle conveying by “conveyors with cover belt, dates back to the early 1950s, when such systems were employed at the bucket wheel excavator boom conveyor in German lignite mines to increase the depth of cut without increasing the boom length. Various systems were developed, patented and built. These systems were not a lasting success for various reasons, which are noted by Rasper[1]. In his 1958 “Review of Cover Belt Systems,” Rasper summarizes the characteristics which are worth pursing and those that should be abandoned. The former are akin to good conveyor engineering. The sandwich belt conveyor model. The first sandwich belt conveyor model allowed calculation of the required hugging pressure to develop the bulk material’s internal friction and preclude material slideback. A modern, accurate version of the sandwich belt conveyor model is presented in Fig. 1. This model depicts accurately a derating of the material cross-section allowing an ample belt edge distance that can tolerate normal belt misalignment without material spillage. The calculations must thus recognize that only part of the hugging pressure is imparted onto the material with the remainder transferred belt edge to belt edge affecting a material seal. Mathematical development of the sandwich belt model is covered by Dos Santos and Frizzell in their 1983 article, “Evolution of Sandwich Belt High Angle Conveyors.”"

In alkaline pulp, galena is depressed by sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC), while Cu(II)-activated sphalerite exhibits a high flotability so that satisfied separation can be achieved. In addition to hydrogen bonding, chemical bonding of NaCMC with galena is confirmed by IR; only hydrogen bonding is involved between NaCMC and Cu(II)-activated sphalerite. It is also found that the greater the degree of substitute and polymerization of NaCMC, the stronger the depressive effect of NaCMC and that lower stirring speed favors the depression.

INTRODUCTION According to a recent analysis by Schiager et al.(1981), inhalation of radon daughters continues to contribute the largest risk from exposure to radioactive materials in underground uranium mines. The American National Standards Institute (1973) has published a concensus standard for radiation protection in uranium mines. According to this standard, a monitoring system for radon daughters must be capable of measuring the annual accumulated exposure in working level months within an uncertainty interval of 50% at the 95% confidence level. To satisfy this criterion, uranium mining companies in the USA have adopted a procedure consisting of single or periodic measurements of the air concentration of radon daughters. All of the measurement methods sample a known volume of air through a filter. After a specified delay interval, the filter is analyzed for radioactivity. The exposure rate from total airborne potential alpha energy in units of working level (WL) is estimated from the measured activity on the filter. For control purposes, this measurement establishes whether or not a work area is safe for occupancy by miners. For routine dosimetry, the concentration estimated from the grab sample is assigned to the appropriate work area. It is then assumed that the concentration of radon progeny is equal to the average of the two measurements at the beginning and end of the specified interval. Meanwhile, the work locations and exposure times of each miner are recorded on the daily time card and verified by the shift supervisor. Most cards provide space for 15-minute time intervals. The exposure in working-level hours (WL-hr) for each shift is obtained by summing the time spent in a given location multiplied by the exposure rate (WL) assigned to that location.The exposure of an individual miner to radon progeny is summarized on a weekly basis and commonly reviewed each month. These values are then accumulated in units of working level- months (WLM) during the calendar year. EVALUATION TECHNIQUE AND RESULTS The evaluation of grab sampling methods for monitoring exposure to radon progeny is presented in two sections. The first section examines each method individually according to accuracy, precision, and uncertainties attributed to human errors. The second section includes an analysis of procedures which are common to all measurement methods. The ultimate goal is to determine whether a specific measurement method, or grab sampling in general, can fulfill the criterion that the annual accumulated exposure of each miner be known to within ± 50% at the 95% confidence level. In addition it is essential that the above criterion be satisfied at an acceptable cost to the mining company. The results of each testing procedure are presented in terms of the contribution of the relative uncertainty in the estimates of cumulative WLM. Each of these are then combined to form a figure of merit for the complete monitoring system. The method of combining statistical uncertainties and interpretation of the results is subject to some debate. However, since all of the tested parameters enter into the final computation of WLM multiplicatively, we have used the commonly accepted procedure of combining the squares of the relative uncertainties. We have also assumed that each of the uncertainties is derived from independent random variables and the covariance of any two variables is zero. A description of each grab sampling measuring method is given in Table 1. Also included is the equation used to compute WL from the measured quantities. Accuracy (U A) Our definition of accuracy is based on the uncertainty inherent in any method which attempts to estimate potential alpha energy without unambiguously determining the concentration of the three unknown radioisotopes, RaA, RaB and RaC. (For simplicity, the RaC and RaC' nuclides are referred to in combination as RaC.) The inherent uncertainty strongly depends on the mixture of these three components at the time of measurement.

Previous mine incidents show weaknesses in mine rescue preparedness from poor training in decision making, leadership and incident command center (ICC) protocols. Computer simulations offer a larger range of training opportunities for mine rescue teams focusing on exploration and communications. The mine rescue simulator developed by the Colorado School of Mines and Rite Solutions Inc. utilizes four computers for the instructor and team, with the instructor monitoring the team?s progress. As the team explores, it relays information back to the Fresh Air Base, which then reports to the ICC. This forces a three-step communication procedure, enhancing the team?s overall communication skills and developing ICC protocols. The simulator is decision-based, demanding team decisions be made quickly. Upon completion, teams commented positively. Generally, participants said that the simulator is useful for learning how to communicate and make decisions during mine rescue emergencies. This mine rescue simulator improves team training, providing effective communications practice with an easy setup and no production interruption.

Artificial neural networks (ANN) are of growing interest in a wide variety of applications. Pattern recognition, speech processing, financial analysis, signal processing and process control are at present the most successful ones. This paper is an attempt to illustrate the potentiality of ANN applied to mineral processing. An introduction to the technology of ANN is first proposed to describe the various components and to explain the various phases encountered in setting up a network. Then examples are given to illustrate the use of ANN dynamic modelling of mineral processing units or plants and in process control.

The word "line" has been used loosely for many forms of the common steel plant flux. For example, many people use the word "lime" for nigh calcium and dolomitic limestone, for high calcium and dolomitic quicklime (also called caustic lime, calcined lime; burnt lime, pulverized and pebble lime) and ;van for clinkered dolomite. Calcium hydroxide, also called slaked lime and hydrated lime, is called "lime" but is seldom used as a flux except when the quicklime air slakes in open boxes or bins. All of the above forms of "lime" are used in the steel plant. Calcium hydroxide is used for water treatment, acid neutralizing, and as a lubricant for wire drawing. All the other limes are used as fluxes in the sintering plant, blast furnace or steel producing furnaces. In the production of self-flux or super-flux sinter, high calcium and dolomitic limestone fines are used. Where quicklime fines are available, they may be added to the sinter mix also. The blast furnace uses both high calcium and/or dolomitic limestone. A few trials have been made using iron oxide stabilized dolomitic lime in an attempt to reduce coke consumption and to increase the production rate. The trials were very successful but would' not be economical, except in periods of coke shortages, with resulting extremely high coke cost and exceptionally high hot metal demand.

"Location: The Menominee district has been described geologically in several units, because the known iron-bearing formations of the larger region are not a really connected. From the commercial and mining standpoint, however, the district em¬braces, all that territory extending from a point about five miles east of Vulcan to a point a few miles west of Iron River, an east-west distance of about fifty miles, and from a line about two miles south of Vulcan to one ten miles north of Crystal Falls, a north-south distance of about thirty-five miles. This area is largely in the State of Michigan, but includes more than two hundred square miles in Florence County, Wisconsin. The chief towns of the district are Vulcan, Iron Mountain, Iron River, and Crystal Falls, in Michigan, and . Florence in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin portion of the district has not produced a large portion of the output of the area.History: The earliest reports of iron ore in the Menominee district were made by J. W. Foster and S. W. Hill, who conducted a geological exploration from Lake Superior to Green Bay in the fall of 1848. It is a remarkable fact that in spite of their plain statements regarding their discoveries, these state¬ments were apparently forgotten for a period of nearly twenty years. Foster states that ""about two miles southeast of the lower falls (of the Twin Falls on the Menominee River) near Sec. 30, T. 40 N., R. 30 W. there is a large bed of specular iron ore associated with the talcose and argillaceous slates. It makes its appearance on the north side of the Lake and can be traced a mile and a half in length and in places is exposed one hundred feet in width."""

Details of the process and plants have also been published by Kurt Baum (5,6).

"Coal mines opting for longwall mining or its variations rely on the main and tail gates for production. Stability of these entries or crosscuts is crucial in coal mining operations. Roof or strata failure can be fatal, may lead to property loss and delay in production. Failure of the gates depends upon many factors including the mining method, panel dimensions, pillar width, mine depth, caving rate, dimensions of gates and roof strength properties. In Pakistan coal is mined through a variation of longwall mining method with almost no mechanization while using timber as a primary support. Timber support as chock is very useful in coal mines especially in overhanging face. Similarly gate entries and coal faces are supported by chock supports throughout their length. In this paper the stability of the longwall gate is assessed for a typical coal mine in Pakistan by using finite element code. Numerical modelling considerations for gate entries are discussed. A model parametric study is performed for key factors. The results showed that the existing mining practice is not suitable and there is a need to review the mining approach. INTRODUCTION Main and tail gate entries leading to longwall mining panel play a crucial role in production cycle. Failure of any of these may lead to loss of life, property and production delays. The stability of gate entries depends primarily on the nature of loading and stresses incurred. It is relatively easier to assess the ground response to production for common longwall mining panel. In thin-seam coal mines the gate entries are generally supported throughout their length by timber made chock supports. The tailgates receive huge deformations and stresses during the mining and backfilling cycle. The chock supports are required to take care of rock falls leading to blockage of entries causing production delays and loss of capital. A number of supports are available for supporting the gate entries (Hoek and Brown 1980; Brady and Brown 1985). The support system can be selected based on load-deformation characteristics including the yielding behavior, pre- and post-yielding behavior (Barczak, 2003). The principal of support selection is that the support characteristics must match the ground response in order to maintain the gate entries (Mucho, et al., 1999). It has been observed that thin-seam mining (<1 m) is very challenging and it is necessary to develop an understanding of ground mechanics before the selection of an efficient support system Dolinar (2003). The chock supports have been tested for load-deformation characteristics in the laboratory (Barczak 2003). But the ground and support interaction, response and loads must be assessed for individual site. This can be accomplished by in-situ testing and observations at few locations. The generated data is generally insufficient for complete understanding. Numerical models can combine the data generated in the laboratory and on-site to fulfill the requirements."

Classification system efficiency (CSE) is a simple metric that can be used to measure and increase ball milling circuit efficiency. It is defined as the percentage of the ball mill energy being used to grind target (oversize) particles. This paper describes CSE analysis conducted for a variety of operations with related improvements in circuit efficiency ranging from 3 to 30 percent. The achievable CSE for any given ball milling circuit is described, providing the means to determine the extent to which every plant can benefit from increasing grinding circuit CSE.

INTRODUCTION, CONCEPTS, AND MEASUREMENT Introduction Periods in the history of man, from his earliest appearance to the present, are often characterized by the principal materials used. In nearly all cases, the material or fuel is of mineral origin-stone, copper, bronze, iron, coal, and so forth-indicating the principal ingredient of the tools or source of power of the period. Each of these periods represented great improvement over the preceding one in terms of human well-being, as measured by population growth and other indicators (Cipolla, 1978). A major reason for the improvements in production and well-being was the nature of the material or fuel, each successively superior to the preceding, which made it possible to produce more food, fuel, shelter, and clothing with a given amount of labor. If we accept this well-documented description of economic progress as accurate, we may then turn to the consideration of two related questions concerning this development. The first, easily answered,-is why man spent long periods of time (millenia, in many cases) making tools from inferior materials, such as copper, instead of passing directly to superior materials, such as iron and steel. The second, closely related question, concerns the relation between the rate of economic growth and the quantity of mineral reserves available at any time. For the first question, the answer is that the technology required to discover, extract, and process each successive material had to be discovered and developed before the material could be used. Once the technology was available, the new material could be and was exploited widely, raising productivity-output per unit of labor- and consequent consumption per person. This familiar idea underlies a fundamental principle of the economics of resources, namely, at any time, available resources depend upon available technology. No mineral or other raw material is a resource unless the technology has been developed to utilize it. But once the technology is at hand, the new resources associated with it provide the means for economic growth and rising levels of living. This principle is subject to certain conditions. For example, governments or other institutions may prevent a mineral from being used, even though the technology is available. And, if a mineral is located in a remote place, transportation charges may make it uneconomic to exploit. Such minor qualifications do not, however, change the thrust of the argument that technology is the overriding determinant. With respect to the second question, it might seem apparent that the greater the quantity of reserves available, up to some point, the more economic growth will be facilitated. This line of reasoning leads to the conclusion that as re- serves are consumed the quantity available will be reduced and economic growth will eventually be restrained. Reasoning of this sort underlies much popular (and scholarly) thought, in which depletion of mineral and other resources is assumed to lead to constraints on economic growth, through higher materials costs and absolute limitations on materials use. In 1961. American Smelting and Refining Company was conducting exploration for lead in southeastern Missouri using several geophysical methods. Electrical methods were used in almost every hole drilled during this period. These methods met with only limited success, with one exception. This paper deals with that exception: An Electrical Potential Method used at a single hole to indicate direction to better mineralization. This method was notably successful in the program.

1.1 INTRODUCTION When underground mining involves total extraction, it induces overburden strata movements. If not properly planned it causes surface subsidence and affects surface environmental conditions. Total extraction usually refers to longwall mining and room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. Surface subsidence has long been a subject of intensive research for scientists all over the world and considerable achievements have been obtained. However due to its difficulties and complicated nature, research into overburden movement has been thus far incomplete as compared to that into surface subsidence. Since surface subsidence is a manifestation of the results of overburden movement, the processes and mechanisms of overburden movement must be fully understood in order to establish the mathematical prediction models of surface subsidence. In this chapter the processes of overburden movement and its zones of movement in the overburden will be discussed. 1.2 PROCESSES OF OVERBURDEN MOVEMENT When total extraction is used, it produces a large void in the coal seam and disturbs the equilibrium conditions of the surrounding rock strata. The roof strata bend downward while the floor heaves. When the excavated area (or gob) expands to a sufficient size, the roof strata will cave. As a result, the overlying strata continue to bend and break until the piles of the fallen rock fragments are sufficiently high to support the overhanging strata. At this tie the overhanging strata no longer cave, but bend and rest on the underlying strata. Strata bending and subsidence develop upward until reaching the surface and forming a subsidence basin. The whole overburden strata and the surface subsidence basin will further go through a period of compaction and gradually become stabilized. Current knowledge regarding the process of overburden movement has been derived from several sources. One is the direct observation of the mined sections and their surfaces, another from field monitoring of strata movements in the overburden, and others from computer modeling and scale modeling in the laboratory. For example, Figs. 1.1 and 1.2 show the results of a borehole monitoring experiment (Borehole B-2) using the full profile borehole inclinometer and full profile borehole extensometer for lateral displacements and vertical subsidence, respectively (Conroy and Gyarmaty, 1983). The panel, 400 ft wide by 5000 ft long and 630 ft deep, was extracted from the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam which had an average thickness of 54 in. The face advanced from east to west. Curve A in Fig. 1.1 shows the inclination of the borehole when it was 45 ft ahead of the face at Position A (i.e., on the solid coal side). The total deviation of the borehole was 1/7000. The first shear movement occurred at 130 ft above the coal seam and appeared to have occurred along the bedding plane with large contrast of rock strata on both sides, i.e., sandstone vs. shale. When the face had passed the borehole 79 ft at Position B, the borehole deformed to assume a bow shape with a maximum deviation of 2.8 in. from the center line. Numerous shearing planes occurred and extended further upward. When the face had passed the borehole by 75 ft at position C, strata subsidence was measured. Fig. 1.2 shows that a strata separation as large as 4 ft occurred at 40 to 100 ft above the coal seam. Above this level, the strata subsided more uniformly with bedding separations within 1 to 2 in. Another example is the longwall mining with complete caving in the Soviet Union&apos;s Karaganda Coalfield (Kolebaeva, 1968). The coal seam was 6 ft thick and 154 ft deep. The immediate roof was the fine-grained sandstone interbedded with coarse-grained sandstone. Above this, there was sandy shale and shale. In order to monitor the process of overburden movement, 15 stations were established in a borehole (Fig. 1.3). The elevations of those stations were measured when the face was at various distances from the borehole. Fig. 1.3 shows the movement history of each station. For convenience of comparison, the movement history of each station was plotted on a common reference point as shown in Fig. 1.4. Clearly, the movements of strata from Station # 1 to #6 were nearly simultaneous, i.e., they behaved as a single unit. The strata from Station #7 to # 15 had differential separations, the maximum of which was 40 in. As the face passed by and moved away, strata separations in general reduced gradually. But strata separation between Stations #12 and #13 remained the same until the end of the monitoring period. The total bed separation between Station #7 and # 15 reached 11 in., approximately 18% of seam thickness, when the face was 132 ft beyond. Based on the above observations, the author developed a conceptual model of overburden movement due to underground longwall mining (Fig. 1.5). The above-mentioned two case studies illustrated that subsidence in the overburden strata propagates upward and subsidence velocity decreases from the bottom to the top. When the subsidence velocity at the surface reaches the maximum value, the subsidence velocity at the bottom portion of the overburden strata has decreased considerably and the strata have begun to compact. Bed separation occurs within a certain distance above the coal seam and reduces from the bottom to the top. When the face has moved away, bed separation reduces gradually, so that eventually some beds completely close and others partially close. Bed separation reaches the highest level when the subsidence velocity at the surface is at its maximum value. For instance in Fig. 1.4 surface subsidence velocity was maximum when the face was 38 to 44 ft past the point. At this time the total bed separation was maximum. Overall the strata directly above the opening are subjected to tension in the vertical direction. But above a certain level, all strata move nearly simultaneously. There is also significant shear movement along some bedding planes. 1.3 ZONES OF MOVEMENT INTHEOVERBURDEN After the extraction of a longwall panel or room and pillar section of sufficient width the strata in the overburden are subjected to various degrees of movement from the bottom to the top. According to the movement characteristics, the damaged overburden can be divided into four zones (Fig. 1.6). Caved Zone. After the extraction of coal, the immediate roof caves irregularly and fills up the void. The strata in this zone not only lose their continuity completely, they also lose their stratified

The Central and Southern Appalachians were the major sources of gold in the United States throughout the first half of the 19th century and have continued to yield gold to the present day. Small amounts of gold were probably extracted by the Indians and the Spaniards but the first documented report of gold in the region was made by Thomas Jefferson who found a four pound lump of gold ore, which yielded 0.85 troy oz., in the Rappahannock River of Virginia in 1782. Gold was subsequently discovered in North Carolina between 1793 and 1799, in Virginia in 1806, in South Carolina in 1827, in Georgia in 1829 and in Alabama about 1830 (Becker, 1894-5; Pardee and Park, 1948). The gold belts of the Central and Southern Appalachian Piedmont and Blue Ridge Provinces are shown in Figure 1. The superimposed circles indicate the mount of production from some of the more productive and well known areas. Although North Carolina produced far more gold than the other states, the most significant concentrated area of production is the Dahlonega District in Georgia which yielded more than 500,000 troy ounces. After discovery, gold production increased rapidly as shown in Figure 2. Production was at its maximum between 1830 and 1852 with combined totals generally exceeding 30,000 troy ounces per year. Production dropped sharply after the California gold rush in 1849 as experienced miners moved westward in search of bigger and easier stakes. After the Civil War briefly halted gold mining in the Appalachians, production rose to an average of about 8,000 ounces per year from 1865 until 1878 and to an average of about 13,000 ounces per year from 1881 until 1915 when it again fell to near nil (Pardee and Park, 1948). Minor resurgences occurred in the 1930&apos;s and 1940&apos;s. Although there has been no reported production in recent years, it is likely that "weekend panners" still remove hundreds of ounces from streams annually. The total reported production for the area through 1959 is in excess of 2.5 million troy ounces.

"Recirculation is prohibited in many coal mining countries because of the fear that the re-use of return air would allow the build-up of air contaminants at the workings. The incorrect design and location of a booster fan in any ventilation network can create unsafe condition due to recirculation. The current approach to investigating recirculation using simulation software requires manual effort which becomes tedious in a complex and a large network. An algorithm-based C++ program was designed to detect the recirculation in a booster fan ventilation networks. This program needed an input file prepared from output file generated by any ventilation simulator. This program created an output file for recirculation. This program demonstrated the strong capability to detect the recirculation in a sample network and a coal mine ventilation network. The outcomes of this program were documented in this paper. INTRODUCTION The proper design and location of booster fans eliminate the safety hazards associated with high main fan pressure. Conversely, the incorrect design of booster fans in any ventilation network can create unsafe conditions due to uncontrolled recirculation. The proper utilization of a booster fan derives benefits to reduce the main fan pressure, leakage, and consequently ventilation cost especially with high resistance network due to deep and extensive working area in a mine. However installation of booster fan may create uncontrolled recirculation, if it is not sized and located properly with respect to main fan. The current approach to investigating recirculation using simulation software requires manual effort, i.e., traversing from node to node in the output network by the simulator while keeping tracks of all the nodes that form recirculation paths. This is an easy task in a simple ventilation network, but it becomes tedious and sometimes very confusing in a complex and large network. Moreover, the presence of multiple recirculation paths makes the manual effort more complex and difficult, especially in separating multiple loops that are connected together. Thus, there is a need for a more efficient program that will detect and quantify the recirculation efficiently, for the generated fan pressures. A program is developed to detect the recirculation(s) in a network."

The authors discuss the cooperative efforts by Minnesota Ore. Operations and Research; from the earlier development, testing and installation of fine shear screens in the Minntac Step III concentrator to the most recent testing and operating data that has resulted in the installation of Derrick Multifeed sandwich deck screens in Minntac Steps I and II. Pilot-plant test results that were obtained at the Coleraine, Minnesota Research Laboratory are also reported and demonstrate the effects of feed rate and feed percent solids on sandwich screen performance with two sizes of Minntac fine screen feed.
