The removal of phosphorus from steelmaking slags is essential for recycling such slags to blast furnaces for recovery of their manganese, iron, and lime contents. Phosphorus is mainly concentrated in the dicalcium silicate phase of the slags (Fujita and Iwasaki, 1988, 1989; Suito, et al., 1977). Slow-cooling of steelmaking slags in an air atmosphere increased the grain sizes of constituent minerals; however satisfactory magnetic separation results could not be attained because of the close association of a strongly magnetic ferrite phase with dicalcium silicate (Fujita and Iwasaki, 1988). Curie point of the strongly magnetic ferrite phase in the slow- cooled steelmaking slags was investigated and an attempt was made to separate the phosphorus-bearing dicalcium silicate phase in ground slag pulps heated to a temperature exceeding the Curie point. Materials and methods Slag samples, heated to its fusion temperature of 1370°C and slow-cooled in an air atmosphere, were ground dry to -90 µm (about 170mesh) in a ring grinder. The ground sample was pulped to 1% solids in distilled water using 1 kg/t sodium hexametaphosphate as a dispersant and separated in a Sala high gradient magnetic separator, Laboratory Model 10-15- 20B, using a 100-mesh expanded metal matrix and 300 m/h flow rate.

INTRODUCTION In the past three decades, world trade has grown from less than $100 billion per year in the years following World War 11 to slightly more than $300 billion in 1970 and over $2,000 billion in the early 1980s. Adjusted for inflation, the real growth of world trade in 1972 dollars increased from less than $175 billion per year in the early 1950s to slightly more than $342 billion in 1970 and almost $700 billion per year by the early 1980s. Thus trade as a whole has increased a little more than twofold in real terms in the past decade." Mineral commodities constituted approximately 20% of the value of total world trade in 1970, and significantly more than that proportion in terms of physical volume. By 1980, de- spite rapidly rising petroleum prices, mineral commodities accounted for roughly 18% of the total value of world trade. Crude oil alone ac- counted for about 16%, making it the single most important commodity in international trade. The worldwide recession of 198 1- 1983 brought a dramatic decline in both volume and price of crude oil, shrinking the impact of mineral commodities to roughly 10% of the value of total exports, worldwide, in 1982- 1983. The decline of mineral commodities as a pro- portion of the value of world trade in the decade 1970- 1980 is due largely to the increasing importance of manufactured goods and consumer products such as automobiles and electronic items. During this period, mineral commodity trade expanded roughly sixfold in terms of current dollars to an estimated $350 to 360 billion in 1980. This was equivalent to doubling the real value of mineral commodities in international trade in the 1970- 1980 period in constant dollars. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has expanded the traditional definition of mineral commodities to include semifinished products such as iron and steel (in addition to iron ore), refined metals such as copper, lead, zinc, aluminum, and tin, concentrates, scrap, and petroleum products. Since large quantities of essentially mineral derivatives travel in this form, it is reasonable to use these expanded definitions in stating the role of minerals in world trade. Thus minerals in world trade comprise 30 to 33% of total export trade in all commodities during the period 1976- 1980 (see Table 1.3.1). In addition, the U.S. Bureau of Mines estimates the value of all mineral commodities consumed in the world (at the national level) and compares this value to total worldwide commodity consumption. By this system, mineral commodities range from 30 to 40% of all commodities consumed each year in all countries during the period 1976- 1980 (see Table 1.3.2). The growth in export trade in mineral commodities by commodity group is shown for the period 1976-1980 in Table 1.3.3. These data parallel the swings in worldwide economic activity during the same time period. Dewatering wells producing iron-rich water experience rapid declines in yield and drawdown due to the formation of ferric (Fe +) hydroxide deposits in well screen, pump intake and riser pipe. Precipitation is caused by a combination of dewatering-promoted iron oxidation and iron-oxidizing bacteria. Physical and chemical well rehabilitation techniques, as well as alternative well construction and well development techniques designed to minimize well clogging, were evaluated in this study. The addition of acid downhole feed systems to dewatering wells prone to iron encrustation can, in some cases, prolong their operational lives up to 500 percent that of unacidified wells.

Landusky Mining, Inc. and Zortman Mining, Inc. are two registered Montana Corporations wholly owned by Pegasus Gold, Ltd. of Vancouver, B.C. The Zortman and Landusky Mines are located in the Little Rockies District of central Montana. The Zortman-Landusky mines produced 2,100 kg gold in 1982. A total of 3,250,000 t of ore per year are mined during the period March 1, to September 15, at an average grade of 1.04 gm/t (0.03 oz/t) gold and 13.4 gm/t (0.385 oz/t) silver at a cutoff grade of 0.35 grams of gold/ton (0.01 oz of Au/t) of ore. The stripping ratio during 1983 is anticipated to be 0.75/1 waste to ore. Combined average plant capacity of the two Merrill-Crowe plants is 9,840 lpm (2,600 gpm). The combined heap spray capacity of the two plants approaches 18,900 lpm (5,000 gpm). The mine employs approximately 200 people, about half of these work for the mining companies and the other half for the mining contractor, N. A. Degerstrom of Spokane, Washington. Net profit in 1982 for Zortman and Landusky Mining, Inc. approximated $4,900,000 at an average gold price of $11.40/gm.

Raman Spectroscopy has become increasingly popular as a method to rapidly identify and characterize minerals, gem stones and other inorganic materials. Raman spectroscopy provides valuable information about the chemical bonds and structure of materials. In fact, the peak locations and intensities observed in a Raman spectrum can often be used to confirm the presence or absence of particular species in a sample. Some modern Raman spectrometers have been designed to analyze samples less than a micron in size while others are designed to rapidly screen bulk material with no sample preparation. Recent advances in software and automated instrument control have greatly reduced the complexity of Raman spectral analysis and provide an easy-to-use tool for analyzing minerals. We will describe the application of several multivariate statistical analysis techniques that have been developed to make use of the spectral libraries. In these techniques the spectrum is treated as a vector and sophisticated mathematical techniques are used to determine which spectral representations in the reference library best match the spectrum from the sample. The DXR Raman microscope was used to 1) Identify minerals by spectral searching, 2) Identifying several species in a sample using multi-component analysis 3) Mapping different species in an aggregate sample and 4) identifying inclusions in a sample.

Aggregate resources should be considered primary factors in urban development. Resource planning is essential because land values, previous construction, or zoning restrictions often preempt exploitation of aggregate deposits within an urban area. Sequential land use practices allow development of areas prior to urban development. Population and aggregate consumption trends in Austin, Texas, indicate that substantial quantities of reserves will be lost to future development. Aggregate materials are present in nearby seas. However, a comparison of transportation and reclamation costs indicates that reclaiming land after mineral extraction can be significantly cheaper than transporting materials longer distances.

Operation of a pilot-scale Floatex density separator was studied using a pyrite concentrate slurry feed. Experimental measurements were further utilized in parameterization of a hindered settling simulation model. The model incorporates particle slip velocity calculation and also a separation efficiency function, adjusted to describe the feed material characteristics. The model was used to compute the overflow and underflow compositions when both fluidization bed pressure and teeter water flow rates were varied. In addition, prediction accuracy and the model validity were evaluated. The simulations gave good results when the teeter interstitial velocities were moderate enough to avoid excessive turbulence in the fluidization. Prediction of the cumulative overflow and underflow size distributions in most experiments yielded essentially less than 10% relative error between the sample data and the estimated value of the 50% passing sizes.

Creede, one of the younger major mining camps in Colorado, grew spectacularly to a town of eight or ten thousand people in the early 1890's following discovery of rich ore in the Amethyst and Last Chance mines. Gross metal production in gold, silver, lead, copper and zinc rose to a maximum of four million dollars a year in 1893. Annual production dropped to much lower figures and ranged between one hundred and five hundred thousand dollars per year during the period from 1914 to 1940. Production reached a gross of eight hundred thousand to one million dollars per year by the mid-1950's. In the years 1953 to 1957, Steven and Ratté conducted geologic investigations which were carried on as part of a cooperative program of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Colorado Metal Mining Fund Board. In a preliminary report on the Creede District, Steven and Ratté suggested that the Bulldog Mountain Fault Zone appeared to be a favorable structure to prospect. On the basis of that recommendation, augmented by independent work done by Manning W. Cox, the property was acquired, transferred to Bulldog Mountain, Inc. and financed by an O. M. E. loan. Late in 1963 Homestake Mining Company, under a Lease and Option Agreement, backed the venture by furnishing additional funds plus management.

The Schaffer linear kimberlite complex and Aultman kimberlite diatremes comprise a major part of the State Line kimberlite district of Colorado and Wyoming, which encompasses approximately 200 sq mi (500 km2). The district is located along the eastern flank of the northern Front Range and is underlain prin- cipally by Precambrian granites (approx. 1.4 b.y.) which have been intruded into an older (approx. 1.75 b.y.) metamorphic complex. The kimberlite occurrences are Devonian in age and are related to older Precambrian linear structures. The Schaffer kimberlite complex is a dike or fissure system with enlargements or blows developed at the intersections of cross faults; the two Aultman occurrences are diatremes. Kimberlite within the Schaffer complex is predominately grey to green phlogopite-calcite kimberlite breccia and tuffisitic breccia. Carbonate is abundant in some phases. Inclusions of host granite are common and locally abundant. Upper mantle peridotite, pyroxenite, and eclogite and lower crustal granulite xenoliths are present at many localities. Four phases of tuffisitic kimberlite breccia occur in the Aultman diatremes. These breccias are characterized by high carbonate and serpentine contents. Xenoliths of upper crustal granite, lower crustal granulite, and upper mantle assemblages are abundant locally. Lower Paleozoic sedimentary rock xenoliths are also abundant in the Aultman diatremes but are absent in kimberlite of the Schaffer complex. From 1979 through September 1982, Cominco American, Inc., conducted geologic mapping, petrographic studies, geophysical surveys, geochemical surveys, and auger drilling in the Schaffer-Aultman project area as part of an extensive evaluation program of kimberlite occurrences. Forty bulk samples (approx. 8,000 metric tons) were excavated from the occurrences and then were processed for diamonds at Cominco American's heavy media separation and diamond recovery test plant at Fort Collins, Colorado. Indicated grades from the Schaffer and Aultman kimberlites range from approximately 0.5-1.0 carat per 100 metric tons and as such, the occurrences do not appear to approach economic viability at this time.

Accurate evaluation of stress and geological conditions is critical to ground control design in underground openings. For a slope entry, the problem is more difficult, because a slope will transverse through many types of strata. Over the last few years, Keystone Mining Services LLC, an affiliate company of the Jennmar Corporation, has developed a new methodology designated the “Stress, geologic and support design system (SGS).” The method analyzes the stress, geology and support design for a mine slope. The method has been successfully applied in various new slopes across the United States, and ground control plans developed using SGS methodology has helped coal companies successfully pass review and/or hearings by state and federal regulatory agencies. With a case application in the U.S. Midwest, this paper details and demonstrates the main concepts of the methodology, including (1) analysis of stress and geology and identification of strong, fair and weak zones along the slope; (2) primary and supplemental support design; (3) long-term support design in the form of steel square sets or arches and (4) validation of the support design utilizing advanced finite element computer modeling.

Geothermal sources are exploited in two basic forms, i.e., the primary form of thermal energy and that converted into electrical energy by using an adequate thermodynamic cycle. There is a possibility of applying several processes for the conversion of thermal into mechanical or electrical energy, which depend on the thermodynamic characteristics of the geothermal water. Geothermal sources in Croatia do not contain steam of relatively high temperature, like in Italy, although both countries are nearly in the same position with respect to geothermal belt. Geothermal sources in Croatia are mostly so-called low-temperature geothermal sources with water temperatures lower than 100°C (Cubric and Jelic, 1993). A few of them have been exploited, although the percentage of utilization of their available power is still very small. The low-temperature potential is a major disadvantage when it comes to power generation, since state-of-the-art geothermal power plants require reheated steam or hot water to operate. There is a common belief that the optimum way of exploiting low-temperature geothermal sources is heat generation. Therefore, this analysis is especially aimed at potential users and showing the technical and economical possibilities of using low-temperature sources for conversion of thermal energy into mechanical work and electrical energy.

This paper analyzes the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of methane-air mixtures in the mined-out gobs of underground longwall coal mines. Although direct examinations of the gob atmosphere are difficult due to the inaccessibility of these gobs, evidence from methane drainage practices and investigations of numerous mine explosions suggests that explosive methane zones can form within longwall gobs. Explosions and fires resulting from these methane accumulations have led to severe and fatal injuries to the miners. Most recently, this was demonstrated in the explosion of the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia, where 29 miners lost their lives.The paper also reviews current research on numerical modeling of gas flows in longwall gobs and outlines how targeted injection of nitrogen into gobs can effectively reduce the volume of such explosive methane zones. The paper concludes that comprehensive monitoring of gas compositions, along the accessible fringes of the gobs along with inertization, improved ventilation schemes and further research are necessary to control this explosion hazard and make mining operations safe.

"Although global mineral resources are considered to be adequate to meet the needs of a rapidly growing world population, the United States is becoming increasingly dependent on imports. This could have implications for both the economy and national security. The US is a country with a strong tradition of leadership in science and technology. Impressive advances in autonomous underground mining systems reduce the adverse effects of heat and humidity in deep mines and focus renewed attention on ground control. Developments in computing power open opportunities to develop improved understanding of the important role of discontinuities (faults and fracture systems) and more effective design of deep excavations. Establishment of mining R&D Centers at leading US research universities, jointly funded by industry and US federal agencies is recommended as an effective step for the nation to remain an influential partner in world mining. INTRODUCTION. “None of the arts is older than agriculture, but that of metals is no less ancient.. . for no mortal man ever tilled a field without implements. If we remove metals from the service of man, all methods of protecting and sustaining health and more carefully preserving the course of life are done away with.” Agricola (1558)i Homo sapiens, generally acknowledged as the species from which modern Man has evolved, is considered to have originated in Swaziland some 100,000-200,000 years ago. Evidence of use of minerals in that region has been dated to earlier than 40,000 BC.ii Today, a large fraction of the elements of the Periodic Table are derived from minerals, and finding new applications in development of innovative technologies. Agricola’s comments are as applicable today as ever.iii Metals such as copper, tin, lead, iron and aluminum were mined and smelted several thousands of years BC. It was not until the Industrial Revolution, started in the latter half of the 17th Century in Northern England, where coal was available as an energy source, and iron as the basis for fabricating machinery, that dramatic change to society began to occur. Human toil was replaced by far more powerful machines. Rural communities migrated to work in factories in urban areas. Rapid transportation over long distances became possible, leading eventually to the world of today. The change spread to other parts of the world, bringing wealth and power. Although now well established in some regions, the Revolution has still to arrive in many other parts of the world. This can be seen in Figure 1, which shows the relative wealth, or ‘Standard of Living’ as measured by the GDP/capita, of regions around the world. Regions such as North America, Europe, and Australasia iv are seen to have the highest standard. Thanks to today’s global communications systems, regions with relatively low GDP/capita are well aware of ‘how others live’ – and eager to emulate them."

"The data from EPB cells located inside the pressurized chamber of EPB TBMs and also the data from the pressure sensors in grout lines are quite important in controlling the EPB operation. However, there have always been questions in regards to pressure distribution along the shield body. Could the pressure distribution data be used to come up with potential locations for ground loss? Does the overcut region, the space between the shield body and the maximum cut diameter, consist of broken material or EPB muck, or does that region consist primarily of void space? During free air interventions, how does pressure distribute along the TBM body? To address these questions, one of the two EPB TBMs used in the Northgate Link Light Rail project in Seattle, WA is equipped with EPB cells in front and rear body to monitor the pressure distribution along the TBM body in addition to the standard 6 EPB cells located inside the cutterhead chamber and pressure sensors located at the grout lines. This paper discusses the results of this study and weighs on the valuable data that can be collected by using the shield pressure sensors.INTRODUCTIONThe cutterhead of the TBM is normally equipped with overcutters on the cutterhead periphery which extend into the annular space beyond the diameter of the TBM shield. Thus, the overcutters serve to disturb and excavate some of the ground in the annular space which reduces friction and resistance around the TBM body. This phenomenon is necessary to help the TBM steer and navigate around curves. Additionally, the shield of an EPB TBM is also often shaped like a cone, with the diameter decreasing from the front to the tail shield. This conical shape also helps the TBM to navigate because material that is cut by the cutterhead either gets pulled into the cutterhead or it gets pushed out of the way – around the cutterhead and into the annular space. In EPB tunneling, the conditioned material from the face that does not get pulled into the cutterhead mixing chamber flows into the shield gap and pressurizes the surrounding ground. Additionally, grout can travel from the segment annulus into the shield gap. The pressure in the shield gap mainly depends on the pressure of the material at the face and the grouting pressure behind the tail shield."

"The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (NIOSH-OMSHR) currently is leading an effort in the development of the next-generation self-escape apparatus as part of the research imperative directed by the MINER Act of 2006. A multifaceted contract program over the past 3 years delivered key components and base breathing modules to form the basis for developing backpack and vest-style versions of dockable self-contained (closed-circuit) self-escape respirators with hoods (CCMERs). This paper outlines the current status in developing the CCMER that incorporates a docking and switch-over valve (DSOV) for seamless transfer from one breathing device to another, and a hood with an inner mask and speech diaphragm (HMC) for ease of donning, ease of use, and communication ability. Three versions of the CCMER are being pursued, namely: the CCMER-B, which can be worn as a backpack and incorporates the features of a miner’s belt; the CCMER-V, which is worn similar to a miner’s vest and attaches to a miner’s belt; and the CCMER-C, a breathing module cached along the escape route that can be docked to the -B and -V versions. Human factors considerations are a key element in the CCMER design, as it is to be continually worn by the miner while underground, and must be readily accessible for deployment when needed. The CCMERs are designed to be capable of being certified to 42 CFR part 84 standards, including sub-part O for mine use, and to meet MSHA permissibility regulations for use in underground mines. They are sized for sufficient oxygen capacities (Cap 2 and Cap 3 as defined in sub-part O) to yield a duration that is of practical use in a mine escape scenario. INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) is leading the development of self-escape apparatuses to provide breathing gas to mining personnel operating in the event of an emergency in various capacities underground in environments containing hazardous gas components. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (also known as the MINER Act) and input from the mining community called for the need to move Self-Contained Self-Rescuer (SCSR) technology to a next-generation status. In response to this need, NIOSH’s Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) established a strategic plan to develop key components and devices with help from external experts knowledgeable in breathing apparatus designs. The US Navy was identified as a key expert in this field through its extensive experience in diving apparatus and life support systems, and development work commenced through Inter-Agency Agreements with OMSHR. A contracts program was also launched with industry experts specializing in this field. This paper outlines the current status in developing the Next-Generation Closed-Circuit Mine Escape Respirators (CCMERs) that could be used for surviving and escaping from a mine following an emergency that renders the mine atmosphere irrespirable."

A new coal boom is under way in western Canada. As recently as the mid-1960's, the coal industry in western Canada was considered stagnant and, by some people, dying. But Japan's growing need for coking coal, which became more pronounced in 1966, sparked great interest in western Canadian reserves.' As a result of a rapidly expanding export market and growth in domestic demand, Canadian coal production spurted to 16.6 million tons in 1970. Production in 1965 was 11.5 million tons. Today, about 60 percent of Canada's output comes from western Canada, but by 1975, 87 percent (23.1 million tons) is expected to come from this area, and 96 percent (68.3 million tons) by 1990. Opening, developing and operating new coal mines to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding market for western Canadian metallurgical coals pose some unique and difficult problems. Covering nearly every aspect of opening properties in remote areas, the problems are met in exploration, transportation, construction, mine operations, coal preparation, manpower and ecology. Paul Weir Company has been involved as coal consultants on various projects in western Canada for some years. In presenting this paper, we make no attempt to present an in-depth or detailed analysis of any one specific situation. Oxygen transfer from dispersed air in agitated slurries represents an important unit operation in the minerals processing industry. Gold leaching, iron precipitation and especially bio-oxidation come readily to mind. However, little engineering information is available on the variations between impeller types on such O2 transfer. Engineering literature on the subject, i.e. information which relates slurry density and energy input to O2 transfer, is reviewed and compared to current experimental work. The latter was carried out with minus 50 micron sand/water slurries in a 64 I laboratory tank of standard proportions, equipped with a variable speed drive with torque meter. A standard Rushton turbine and a specifically sized A315 were compared. Results confirm an increasing impairment of O2 transfer with increasing slurry density for both impellers. The volumetric mass transfer coefficient, k,a, in a 10 vol. % slurry shows a decrease of 30% compared to the k,a in water. At 20 vol. % sand this decrease is near 50 %, depending somewhat on superficial gas velocities. Power efficiency, i.e. the kg O2/kWh, decreases about 25 % more rapidly for the Rushton turbine than for the A315 with the addition of sand. However, for equivalent O2 transfer the Rushton turbine was more efficient in this work. Experimental results are presented and their significance for slurry bio-oxidation discussed.

"INTRODUCTIONDouble Shield TBMs were introduced in the market in the early seventies with three main targets:• Increase the TBM performances in term of advance per day thanks to the ability to erect a segmental lining simultaneously with the excavation phase.• Be able to advance through unstable and disturbed rocks under the protection of the shields• Provide a finished tunnel by installing a precast lining as the TBM advance.In 2003 SELI developed the design of the Double Shield Universal (DSU) TBM as an evolution of the original Double Shield TBM design.This new TBM design was targeted to improve: the TBM capability to advance through squeezing/converging rock formations under high cover, the telescopic joint design (allowing by such to operate the machine in double shield mode in very weak rock), the capability of the TBM to investigate and treat the ground around and ahead of the tunnel face.In the same lapse of time Single Shield TBMs, originally utilized for soft ground tunnelling, extended progressively their range of application to mix rocks and finally to hard rock tunnelling with increasing performances.This also thanks to the substantial reduction in the installation time of the segmental lining ring that contributed to minimize the TBM stand by time between two consecutive boring strokes.Today the choice between the two types of TBMs needs to be carefully evaluated project by project since one type of TBM may “prevail” in certain geologies and diameters and vice versa.THE VISHNUGAD PIPALKOTI TUNNELThe Vishnugad Pipalkoti Tunnel is part of the 444 MW Vishnugad Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project (VPHEP) on Alaknanda river in Uttarakhand (India).The Owner is the Indian electric company “Tehry Hydro Development Corporation” (THDC) and the World Bank finances the project.The Headrace Tunnel total length is 13.4 Km and a section of about 12,3km will be excavated by TBM by SELI Overseas (Italy) in subcontract to HCC (India) the General Contractor for the project. The TBM will be delivered ex workshop in March 2016 and it is foreseen to start boring in the second half of 2016.Figure 1 below shows the location of the project and the following Table 1 summarizes the geometrical characteristics of the TBM tunnel."

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has constructed two biochemical reactor systems (BCRs) to treat mining influenced water from the Forest Queen Mine near Silverton, CO. The bioreactors coupled with a natural wetland provide treatment to the Forest Queen Mine drainage. The central objective of this paper is to review the performance of the bioreactors and wetland treatment system. Two major Inco matte constituents, chalcocite and heazlewoodite, are separated by differential flotation with diphenylguanidine as collector. A new reagent system involving the use of dextrin as a modifying agent which provides better selectivity has been studied for the last three years. Adsorption tests reveal that while dextrin exhibits high affinity towards heazlewoodite, the adsorption isotherm for dextrin on chalcocite shows only weak interactions. Our electrokinetic measurements confirm such conclusions. Since dextrin interaction with solid surfaces seems to be especially strong when such surfaces are covered by hydroxide layer, our electrokinetic measurements are in line with other researchers' findings who postulated that copper hydroxide is not a stable product on the surface of copper sulphides.
