Kaiser Resources Ltd. operates a coal mining complex in Southeastern British Columbia. A large surface mine, a conventional underground mine, and an innovative hydraulic underground mine are presently in operation. The products of these mines are fed to the Elkview plant. This coal has to be prepared to 9. 5% ash and 6'o total moisture for export from the port of Roberts Bank near Vancouver, British Columbia to Japan at a rate of 4. 5 Mltpy. The moisture requirement for the coal product was recently increased to 8. 0% total moisture. The entire operation has been described in various publications (1), (2), (3). Details of the venture will not be repeated in this paper. In this paper we hope to describe the modifications made to the original coal preparation plant in order to satisfy market requirements for quality and quantity of coal.

Understanding the nature of coal surface heterogeneity is a prerequisite to accurate characterization and efficient control of coal surfaces. New techniques based on the centrifugal immersion of particles from the liquid/ vapor interface and film flotation have led to independent estimation of surface energy distributions in individual coal particles. Changes in the distribution of surface sites due to oxidation and polyacrylamide adsorption on coal are studied here using the above techniques. New information on -possible conformations of adsorbed polymers is also obtained.

The processing of EAF baghouse dusts from both the specialty steel industry and low alloy producers will be reviewed. In addition, the INMETCO process has been modified so as to recover nickel, chromium and iron from many other waste materials such as pickling solutions or filter cakes, spent nickel and chromium plating baths, carbon refractories from pickling tanks, and super alloy wastes including baghouse bags. INMETCO is the only North American company presently capable of recycling nickel-cadmium batteries by high temperature metals recovery. This, along with the details of INMETCO's BDAT Test Program and results performed to pre-agreed standards with the EPA will be discussed.

Approximately 1,390 t (44.7 million ounces) of gold have been produced in South Dakota since 1875. South Dakota's mining laws attempt to strike a balance between economic development and environmental protection by promoting mining as an industry while requiring prevention of pollution and reclamation of affected lands to a beneficial use. The mining laws have evolved since their inception in 1971, especially in response to gold mining. The laws have remained flexible to meet changing regulatory needs. Gold production has continued relatively unabated, even in the face of public scrutiny, two mining moratoriums, and isolated environmental problems. The department's system of "one-stop-shopping" for environmental permits streamlines the permit process, fosters quick resolutions to compliance problems, and helps keep enforcement actions out of the courts. Specific case histories at heap leach mines within the Black Hills are presented.

I would like to thank the Society of Mining Engineers for inviting me as well as the other distinguished panelists to spend a morning reviewing and discussing the handling and shipping of industrial minerals. I also would like to thank my management, Cometals. Inc. for permitting me to take time out from the daily hectic pace of marketing and trading to share with you some of our experiences and expertise. Cometals, Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Commercial Metals of Dallas. The transportation and handling costs of industrial minerals frequently are a major component of the value of the goods marketed and, therefore, it is only natural that close attention should be paid to them. Many of the industrial minerals require special handling to assure that the material reaches the consumer without being contaminated or getting wet. I invite you to accompany me through the various steps involved in "delivering the goods" to the consumer.

This paper presents pit slope monitoring and back-analysis case studies con-ducted to evaluate and, if possible, stabilize slopes at the Berkeley Pit in Butte, MT. Two specific slopes were studied in detail. The first slope was determined to be near limiting equilibrium, as evidenced by its response to the initiation and cessation of mining, while the second failed on three occasions. Back-analysis of the failed slope verified the laboratory-derived geomechanical properties of the earth materials. Early detection of slope movement can show a need to take action, including modifying slope geometry, dewatering if the slope were wet, and/or investigating and implementing artificial supports. Monitoring slope displacements in open-pit mines can supply data for predicting collapses and preventing serious damage, injuries, and/or loss of life.

The gold mining and ore processing operations of Minera Yanacocha S.A. are 10cated in an area 4,000 meters above sea level in the Peruvian Andes same 600 km north of Lima and 20 km north of Cajamarca. The joint venture partners are Newmont Second Capital (USA); Compania Minera Condesa (Peril); Mine Or (France) and the IFC. Newmont manages the operation. The Yanacocha district comprises several areas with mineralization evidence. The first ore with minable reserves of 28 million tonnes of ore assaying about 1.4 gpt Au is called Carachugo and is being mined and treated at the rate of 14,000 tonnes of ore per day by open pit mining methods. ROM ore is dump leached and the gold recovered in a Merrill Crowe plant. The plant design incorporates some unusual considerations to overcome the problems of the high rainfall in this area and assure the protection of the environment.

This paper presents a kinematic approach for blast modeling with examples of blast models that were developed previously. A kinematic approach was applied successfully in developing blasting models that can simulate all blast design parameters for field applications. Several applied blasting models have been developed and applied widely in the world. A kinematic approach to blast modeling refers to using measurements of kinematic quantities such as the velocity, strain, or displacement and well-established assumptions to model blasting phenomena, rather than being restricted to use first principal of physics, such as, the stress- and material-constitutive relations. The kinematic quantities are easy to measure in the field. Due to the complexity and inhomogeneity of rock mass properties, using first principles of physics, many parameters of rock and explosive properties must be involved, which are hard or impossible to quantify. This creates a major impediment when trying to simulate the total process of blasting based upon first principles of physics. The 3D kinematic model for muckpile formation was developed and applied to open pit blasts. The multiple blasthole fragmentation model developed during recent years has been applied successfully to many mine sites around the globe. These models are typical examples of blast modeling using the kinematic approach, which enables the models to catch major trends of the blasting process and explicitly simulate full blast design parameters and complex geometries. Blast modeling using the kinematic approach results in easy model calibration and validation against field measurements and effective applications to practical problems. Using kinematic models of the muckpile formation and the multiple blasthole fragmentation model, this paper demonstrates the merits of the kinematic approach for blast modeling. New developments of the models were also presented in the paper, which illustrate the potential of the kinematic modelling approach.

In a country richly endowed in mineral wealth, Climax Arimco Mining Corporation's (CAMC) Dinkidi porphyry Au?Cu deposit in Nueva Vizcaya province, Philippines, represents the most significant mineral discovery in the country in recent times. The deposit is located within a belt of young intrusive and volcanic rocks in the Sierra Madre mountain chain of north Luzon a region previously unassociated with porphyry-style mineralization. Since 1989, drilling of the Dinkidi deposit has outlined a resource of 124 million tonnes of 1.0 g/t gold and 0.41 % copper. Regional exploration throughout CAMC's 37,000 hectare FTAA has identified a further sixteen potential porphyry-related deposits. A new mining law was passed in March 1995 but prior to that CAMC had the first Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement (FTAA) granted by the Philippine government allowing 100% foreign ownership of mining projects.

The year 1867 marks the first year of commercial production of phosphate rock in the United States. South Carolina produced almost all of the domestic output of mineral phosphate until phosphate mining began in Florida in 1888. During the period 1868 to 1949 the total marketed production of domestic phosphate rock was about 186 million long tons of which 71.5 percent was produced in Florida, 18 percent in Tennessee and 7 percent in South Carolina (1). From 1949 through 1960, Florida phosphate rock production has ranged Prom 71 to 77 percent of the total domestic production. Since three-fourths of the domestic phosphate production is from the Florida field, and since most of the phosphate from the Tennessee and Western fields is not processed, but used directly as electric furnace burden, this paper will concern itself almost entirely with water requirements for mining and processing ore from Florida. Figure 1 summarizes phosphate rock production for Florida vs. total United States production over the period 1947-1960.

An upsurge of interest in slurry pipelines to move coal from Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado to markets in the southwest, west, midwest and northwest has recently developed. Specific pipelines have been proposed to serve these markets; the routes of these lines are depicted in Exhibit I. It is, therefore, timely to discuss some technical aspects of the terminal facilities for these western coal pipelines. The discussion will be based on experience with the Ohio and Black Mesa pipelines as well as detailed planning and testing for a proposed 1,000-mile system from Wyoming to the middle south area. The economics of the pipeline terminal processes are heavily depend¬ent on site, type of process used, and other specifics of the situation. However, the following approximate breakdown of costs for a 1,000 mile, large capacity pipeline will be useful for orientation purposes. Vibrations from thirty-seven blasts were monitored using three seismographs. Data analysis showed that square root, cube root, and site-specific scaling predicted ground motion with equal reliability. Imprecise prediction is caused by geologic and blast variability, particularly inaccurate delay times. Vibrations at some mines were consistently lower or higher than vibrations reported in the U.S. Bureau of Mines studies. Regulations based on USBM data could then be too conservative or lenient. Predominant vibration frequencies were generally less than 50 Hz, but several blasts had significant energy up to 125 Hz. In some cases energy was concentrated at frequencies corresponding to delay intervals.

Many of the major copper ore bodies throughout the world contain chalcocite (79.9% Cu) as the principal copper mineral, yet the grades of copper concentrates produced from these ores rarely exceeds 25 to 28% Cu and in one known instance went as low as 13%. The low grade has traditionally been attributed to the presence of "activated pyrite" and/or chalcopyrite, and the universal approach has been excessive regrinding with all of its inherent effects-high capital, energy and maintenance costs, excessive sliming, and concentrate filtration difficulties (high moisture content). E. P. Cadwell, former Chief Metallurgist for American Cyanamid Company, did extensive microscopical studies on several of these types of concentrates from South American operations during the 1950's and discovered they all had one common feature--the pyrite particles in the concentrate were all rimmed with thin films of secondary chalcocite or covellite. As far as a flotation bubble or reagent is concerned, a rim of chalcocite is the same as a solid particle of chalcocite, and as long as a rim is present, the particle is going to float. Upon examination of these rimmed particles under the microscope, it becomes quite obvious why regrinding will never solve the problem and why maximum increases in grade by this technique rarely give improvements in grade of greater than 3 to 5% Cu.

Canada's coal production is approximately 65.4 million tonnes of which 95 % is produced by surface mining methods mostly from the three Western provinces (British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan). The mines are highly mechanized; productivity gains during the past few years have ranged from 60 -80%. Truck/Shovel methods are common although Saskatchewan lignite is almost exclusively mined by draglines. This paper provides an overview of Canadian Coal mining industry vis a vis surface mining. Emphasis is on application and utilization of mining equipment and associated mining methods.

In aging tunnels, wall and roof deterioration can eventually result in defects that must be detected and repaired to maintain safe structural conditions. In investigating tunnel defect conditions, a specialized FM radar system was developed with a programmable VHF and UHF operating sweep range for optimizing the penetration and measurement capabilities. The new FM radar technology was tested in two aging brick-lined tunnels in New York City. Test results showed that FM radar signals could penetrate eight courses of water-saturated brick and that the original steel liner outside the tunnel walls was intact.

"Complex geology requires innovative approaches to confidently and appropriately model grade and geologic trends. Local Anisotropy Kriging (LAK), by Isaaks and Company, and MineSight® Dynamic Unfolding (MSDU) from Hexagon Mining are advanced interpolation methods designed to best estimate grade along deformed three-dimensional grade trends at sediment-hosted deposits. While LAK works in Euclidean space for the construction of variograms, kriging weight assignment, and non-linear local interpolation search ellipsoids, MSDU is far more dynamic and can utilize a modeled three-dimensional undulating surface representing a folded grade trend to construct the above mentioned. MSDU was implemented at the sediment-hosted, stratabound Tenke-Fungurume mining district and revealed major block-to-block differences in interpolated copper and cobalt grades compared to LAK. INTRODUCTION Grade estimation is the cornerstone of long-range mine planning. Pit designs, metal recovery, mining costs, reserves calculations and reporting are all dependent upon a reliable grade model. If the geology is poorly understood or the interpolation methods and parameters have been haphazardly constructed, then massive financial losses will be the inevitable outcome. Therefore, a properly trained geologist must use all of the appropriate tools available including deposit knowledge and advances in modeling technology to construct the most geostatistically and practically sound long-range block model. Certain deposits, such as the sediment-hosted deposits at Tenke-Fungurume, require an interpolation method that best suites the style of mineralization. In 2014, Hexagon Mining developed a tool in MineSight called dynamic unfolding (MSDU) that has the potential to improve upon previous Euclidean-based interpolation methods. MSDU utilizes the non-stationarity of a folded grade trend to more accurately construct variograms and improve interpolation results based upon a modeled three-dimensional surface. Geology Overview The sediment-hosted Tenke-Fungurume mining district is located in the southeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Figure 1). The rocks within the district are primarily dolomites and shales from the lower half of the Roan Supergroup that were mineralized by ascending pregnant copper and cobalt rich brines within a massive sedimentary basin (Cailteux et al., 2005) (Figure 2). These oxidized brines likely found a fluid channel in the porous RSC unit. The surrounding rock units provided a redox boundary for copper and cobalt precipitation along organic rich beds, forming a massive stratabound deposit that was later broken up by several subsequent tectonic events (Dewaele et al., 2006). Layering and Block Orientations To capture the bedding-controlled nature of the Tenke-Fungurume copper and cobalt mineralization, each lithology type must be subdivided into individual layers with a uniform thickness (Figure 3). The thickness of each layer is determined by the user, but should equal the bench height to achieve maximum resolution within each lithology type. Composites are back coded from the model to achieve layer codes that match block locations."

"AECOM completed a subsurface exploration program for an 18-foot diameter, approximately 4-mile long rock tunnel project in Hartford, CT. The tunnel crosses the regional geologic trend through the middle of a sedimentary basin, passing through four separate rock formations, including two volcanic flows. Faulting is prevalent, with at least 15 faults encountered during the site investigation. Severe artesian flows were also experienced in several of the borings, requiring highly specialized drilling equipment. Sixty-two borings and associated testing were performed to characterize the structural geology, hydrogeology, rock properties and ground conditions. A phased program was carefully planned and implemented with participation of geotechnical and geologic specialists, with thoughtful evaluation along the way to react to the ground conditions encountered, and make appropriate refinements. This paper will discuss the subsurface program details; the integrated efforts used to effectively characterize the ground; and will summarize the final characterization presented in the GBR. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The South Tunnel Conveyance and Storage Tunnel project is part of the Metropolitan District (MDC’s) Long Term Control Plan to address discharges to various water bodies throughout the greater Hartford area. This program includes a main conveyance and storage tunnel; a tunnel boring machine (TBM) launch shaft and retrieval shaft; adit tunnels with associated drop shafts and connection structures; consolidation conduits and manholes; and a tunnel pump station (TPS) at the downstream end of the main conveyance tunnel. AECOM is serving as prime designer for the MDC on this project. The main conveyance tunnel (hereinafter referred to as the “South Tunnel”) will be a deep rock tunnel with an invert depth of approximately 180 feet at its downstream end and approximately 218 feet at the TBM retrieval shaft. The tunnel will have a finished diameter of 18 feet. The tunnel will rise in grade at a slope of 0.1 percent to its upstream end. Total invert depth along the deep tunnel alignment ranges from about 180 ft. to as high as 320 feet. The total length of the tunnel will be 21,754 feet. The South Tunnel will be constructed using a shielded TBM and fully lined with pre-cast concrete segments."

"A Yieldable Structure for Use in Areas of High Rock Stress & Deformation." Rock stress of up to 9000 psi have been recorded in the mines of the Coeur d'Alene Mining district. Associated with these large stresses are rock fractures and deformation. In order to maintain openings required for mining, large wood preparation structures are constructed to provide access to the work areas for men and materials. These wood raise preparation structures are costly to construct and maintain. Therefore a steel-foam concrete structure was designed and proposed for testing which would be less costly to construct, require no maintainence and maintain its structural integrity while allowing up to 53 inches of wall rock deformation.

General. Data for the operating information given in the 15 tables in this chapter was obtained from voluminous questionnaires sent to over 100 operating companies in 1972. There has been a considera¬ble change since then in supply and power costs and many companies have had expansions or revisions since that time, so it must be realized that information is valid for the year 1972. This is true except for the three new properties of Sacaton, Metcalf, and Pinto Valley. These three operations started up since 1972 and all information for them was obtained in 1975. The questionnaires were sent to all major copper properties throughout the world as well as to many smaller units and to some mines that had complex or unusual conditions. Properties for which no information is given did not submit completed questionnaires. Several operations were unable to supply information requested be¬cause of company policy prohibiting it. However, data is presented for 75 different operating properties. The reference number of the left-hand column is the same for all 15 tables of data. If the company had several operating properties as of 1972, then subsequent properties use the same number but a different letter. For example, Anaconda's property at Butte, Mont., is IA, whereas Anaconda's (now Anamax) Twin Buttes property in Arizona is IB. Table I gives general data for the properties including exact loca¬tion, milling rate, pertinent assay values and recoveries, and a brief listing of ore and gangue minerals. It was not possible to obtain any more information from the properties in Chile except that given in Table I. Crushing. Crushing plant operating data is given in Table 2. This table gives data on the crushers, feeders, and screens used at each property. The data obtained on feeders was confusing, but, rather than completely eliminate this information, it was decided to report it as given. The confusion lies only in the description of where the feeder is located. Where a primary feeder is listed it was not possible to determine if this feeder was on primary feed or primary discharge. For secondary feeders it is known that the feeder listed usually is feeding the secondary crushers, but at some properties it is handling the secondary crusher discharge. The same reasoning holds true for tertiary feeders-they handle either tertiary feed or discharge. This table contains a voluminous amount of data. A column giving tons per day per square foot of screen area would have been very informative, but some properties included circulating load in the feed rate and others listed new feed only, so calculations were meaningless. Autogenous Mills. The use of autogenous or semiautogenous mills for any property must be given serious consideration in the future. Table 3 lists data for four properties that are fully autogenous and four more semiautogenous mills that use balls to supplement the chunks of ore. This method of grinding is especially applicable when the ore is of such a nature that crushing problems would be severe, such as when ore is wet or sticky or contains a lot of fines. Paradoxically, it should also be considered when ore is tough and hard and blocky because then the competency of the ore means it can serve well as the grinding media. Where the ore varies greatly in hardness, as at Cyprus Pima and Lornex, semiautogenous grinding has been especially beneficial with capital costs and operating costs both 10-20% lower than could be obtained with conventional crushing and grinding. Rod Mills. For a great many years the standard milling operation used two- or three-stage crushing followed by open circuit rod mills and then ball mills in closed circuit with classifiers of some kind. A surprising number of properties crush to the fine size of about 3/8 in. and then use ball mills only, in closed circuit, with no rod mills. It is difficult to say whether rod mill-ball mill circuits or ball mill only is the best. One can be certain of two things: (1) the argument will go on for a long time and (2) for some mills one method obviously was superior over the other. As ball mills of 14, 15 ft, and larger came into use, more properties like Duval Sierrita (16b ft diam by 19 ft long) and Bougainville (18 x 21 ft) were built with single-stage ball mill grinding. Although there are larger rod mills used, especially in the iron ore industry, the largest rod mills on copper ore are at Twin Buttes (14 x 18.5 ft) and at Gibraltar (13'A x 20 ft). Introduction Rod mills are horizontal, cylindrical, rotating, tumbling mills in which steel rods, that are usually about 6 in. shorter than the length of the grinding chamber, are used for grinding media. Fig. 33 shows a cutaway view of a rod mill. Rod mills were first used around 1910 because of their ability to grind in open circuit, consistently produce a uniformly sized prod¬uct, give greater continuous availability, and give lower maintenance costs. They have basically replaced roll crushers and coarse grinding ball mills in comminution flowsheets. The present 20-ft limit on rod length, based on rod manufacturing methods, and the pulp flow char¬acteristics, that influence mill capacity, have established the maximum rod mill sizes' of 15 x 21 Vs ft using 20-ft rods and drawing from 2,200 to 2,300 hp. Rod Mill Uses. The principal uses for rod mills are: preparing feed for ball or pebble mills, grinding gravel or aggregates to the size analysis required for making concrete sand, preparing coarse agitator feed for leaching operations, and for primary grinding circuits, particularly in industrial mineral applications. Wet grinding is the most frequently used grinding process for rod milling. There are a few special cases where dry rod milling is used. Preparing feed for ball or pebble mills is the most common use for rod mills. In ferrous and nonferrous ore concentrators, wet open-circuit grinding is used to prepare ball-mill feed. Figs. 34 thru 37 show the four basic grinding circuits used in these concentrators. In rod mill-ball mill grinding circuits, where the rod-mill discharge contains 25% or more of the grinding circuit product-size material, the rod-mill discharge can be fed to the ball- or pebble-mill classifier as shown in Fig. 34. This is the most frequently used rod mill-ball mill circuit in the nonferrous ore concentrators. In a few concentrators such as Anaconda's Weed concentrator,55 the rod mill discharges to one classification stage which makes the same or a slightly coarser particle-size cut as the classifiers used to close the ball- or pebble¬mill circuits, as shown in Fig. 35. In concentrators where rod mill-ball mill circuits are used to grind low grade magnetic iron ores such as Reserve Mining Co., Silver Bay, Minn.; Erie Mining Co., Hoyt Lakes, Minn.; Eveleth Taconite Co., Forbes, Minn.; US Steel, Mt. Iron, Minn. and Atlantic City, Wyo.; Inland Steel-Jackson County Iron Co., Black River Falls, Wis.; and The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., Adams mine, Kirkland Lake, Ont., the rod mills discharge to rougher magnetic separators (cobbers), the concentrates from which are fed to a ball milling stage as shown in Fig. 36. The same basic circuit is also used with gravity concentra¬tion methods such as spirals (Hanna Mining Co., Groveland, Mich.), tables (St. Joe Minerals, Bonne Terre, Mo.), and jigs. When the rod-mill discharge contains less than 25% of the grind¬ing circuit product size, this indicates an ore that does not readily produce the fines needed to help carry the coarse feed into the ball charge. When this occurs, the fines in the rod-mill discharge are needed in the ball mill or pebble mill so the rod-mill discharge flows direct to the second-stage mills as shown in Fig. 37. Rod mills are used to make feed for open-circuit ball mills such as those used in wet grinding cement raw material (American Cement, Brennan Ave¬nue plant, Detroit, Mich., and Port Huron, Mich., plant, and at the South Dakota State Cement plant, Rapid City, S. Dak.). Grinding gravel or aggregates to the size analysis required for making concrete sand is used in areas where natural sand of the proper particle size gradation required to make concrete is not availa¬ble. Three-quarter inch crushed aggregate is ground to 4 mesh using center peripheral-discharge rod mills (Fig. 38) operating in open circuit. US Corps of Engineers specifications state that the sand product be 93-100% passing 4 mesh and contain no more than 3-7% passing 200 mesh. It may be necessary to classify the rod-mill discharge to remove any excess -200 mesh sand produced in the rod mill. Particu¬larly when processing aggregate with high abrasion indices, center peripheral-discharge rod mills are used instead of hammer mills, fine bowl crushers, and crushing rolls for the production of specification sand.
