The Flambeau volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit located in northwestern Wisconsin occurs within the southern lobe of the Canadian Precambrian Shield. The steeply dipping tabular body occurs in a complex pile of cyclic schistose intermediate to felsic fragmental volcanics. No chloritic alteration pipe is recognized but adjacent rocks have undergone magnesia metasomatism and subsequently were metamorphosed to the upper greenschist and lower amphibolite facies. Although modest in size the deposit is of special interest in that it has an extensive and well preserved supergene enrichment blanket. Economic minerals found within a pyritized quartz-sericite schist are chalcocite and bornite overlying primary chalcopyrite.

Gravitational field anomalies have been observed over many igneous intrusives of medium (4000 km2) to small (100 km2) size in outcrop area. These studies give good results because the residual anomalies can be separated from larger scale crustal anomalies and density contrasts usually are present. Although unique solutions are not possible, the analysis of the gravity anomalies can put limits upon the geologic interpretation of such bodies. Three examples in Montana, U. S. A. are discussed: (1) the Boulder Batholith, a late Cretaceous quartz monzonite series of intrusives of 4000 km2 outcrop area; (2) the Little Rocky Mountains, an up-domed area, in which an Eocene porphyry (130 km2) has intruded the Precambrian crystallines and lower Cambrian sediments; and (3) the Crazy Mountains, an Eocene diorite (100 km2), which has intruded the Paleozoic and Mesozoic sediments. In both the Boulder Batholith and the Little Rocky Mountains, intrusive rocks are less dense than the surrounding rocks and negative anomalies are found (40 and 28 mgal, resp.). In the Crazy Mountains, the intrusive is more dense than the surrounding sediments and a sharp positive residual anomaly of 42 mgal is observed. The analyses of the gravity anomalies predict that: (1) the thickness of the Boulder Batholith is on the order of 10 to 15 kms and is concave upward; (2) the Little Rocky Mountain syenite is not a simple laccolith, but is T-shaped and extends in depth to about 16 kms; (3) the Crazy Mountain diorite is not a simple small scale series of stocks, but a large connected body extending in depth 5 kms to the basement (although nothing can be said of it within the basement because there is little density contrast). The analyses of the anomalies place important limits on both the areal and depth extent of the intrusive bodies. Of all possible geophysical techniques, gravity studies offer the most promise in the determination of the shape in depth of intrusive bodies.

Minor elements determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy include: zinc, cadmium, copper, cobalt, nickel, chromium, manganese, and iron. Of these elements, only three; zinc, cadmium, and copper are found to have been introduced with the ore-forming fluids. Iron, manganese, chromium, and nickel were increased in dolo-stone lithologies when compared to limestone lithologies. The uniform distribution of cobalt suggests this element was neither increased nor decreased during ore emplacement nor during dolomitization of the rocks. Zinc increases adjacent to ore result from leakages into open spaces rather than as pervasive aureoles surrounding ore bodies.

Accurate estimation of resources is one of the major challenges in mineral project evaluation. Contemporary mineral resource estimation practice calls for contribution from several disciplines and execution of several interdependent tasks. 3D estimation domain modelling is obviously one of the most essential components of such a substantial process which forms the basis of this research. The study constitutes a comparative analysis of four major domain modelling techniques; (i) explicit modelling, (ii) implicit modelling, (iii) indicator kriging, and (iv) conditional simulation. It involves comparison of outcomes for alternative scenarios to assess the implications of the modelling decision on resource estimates of a polymetallic massive sulfide deposit located in western Turkey. Thus, identical grade estimation method and parameters are considered to identify the discrepancies arising only from the choice of the domain modelling approach and underlying assumptions. Economic implications are demonstrated in the form of range of outcomes for the extends of the ultimate pit, ore tonnages (min:37.0 Mt, max: 46.7Mt), waste tonnages (min:201.2 Mt, max: 251.2 Mt), stripping ratios (min:5.18, max: 5.71), and total pit values (min: $1.05B, max: $1.45B). Examination of solid models as well as cross-sections revealed that major discrepancies are observed beyond outlying drillholes. Therefore, it has been proposed that assumptions regarding extrapolation distance is the main source of mentioned dissimilarities. Key words: Domain modelling, explicit modelling, implicit modelling, indicator kriging, conditional simulation INTRODUCTION Resource estimation is apparently a challenging process calling for extensive expertise and input from several sources, each of which introducing its related uncertainties. In the last decades, substantial role of quantitative analysis of several forms of risk and uncertainty in evaluating projects’ upside potential and downside risks has been realized. Studies indicated that mining companies have been severely impacted because of not meeting project expectations. As noted by Vallee (2000) “… in the first year of operation after start-up, 60% of mines surveyed had an average rate of production less than 70% of designed capacity”. Several other studies on mining projects also revealed that uncertainties related with the resource model are one of the major contributors of mentioned shortfalls. In this perspective, quantification of uncertainties associated with each component of estimation process is critical. 3D estimation domain models capturing major mineralization controls are the fundamental components of contemporary mineral resource estimation. Domain models are key guiding tools for estimation and are products of a complex process involving many unknowns and assumptions. There exists a number of 3D modelling alternatives which are distinct with respect to complexity, time and effort involved. Acknowledging potential influences on downstream mining practices and relavent economic implications, risks and uncertainties associated with 3D domain modelling are critical yet poorly studied aspects.

This paper describes variations in feed characteristics, preparation techniques, response to induration and product quality in pelletizing magnetite concentrates, earthy hematite ore fines, and specular hematite concentrates in grate kiln systems. The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company manages plants processing these various materials on the Marquette Iron Range in northern Michigan. The operations include the Humboldt Mining Company, Marquette Iron Mining Company, Empire Iron Mining Company and the Pioneer Pellet Plant. The combined output of the operations is approximately 9,000,000 long tons per year. The Humboldt Mining Company, owned by Ford Motor Company and Cliffs, produces pellets from a specular hematite concentrate. The Empire operation, which processes magnetite ore, is owned by Inland Steel Company, McLouth Steel Corporation, International Harvester and Cliffs. The Pioneer operation, which processes earthy hematite ores, is a joint venture of Republic Steel Corporation, McLouth Steel Corporation, Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Cliffs. The Marquette Iron Mining Company, owned by hones and Laughlin Steel Corporation, International Harvester, Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation and Cliffs, produces pellets from specular hematite concentrate at the Republic Mine and Eagle Mills Pellet Plant. With the exception of the Eagle Mills plant, the operations employ the grate-kiln pelletizing system. Descriptions of the Empire, Pioneer and Republic operations, which have a combined capacity of 7,200,000 tons per year, are given in the paper.

"INTRODUCTION Site location and history The Holden Mine is a former underground copper mine that was developed and operated by the Howe Sound Mining Company (Howe Sound) from 1938 to 1957. The mine is located in north-central Washington State, U.S., near Lake Chelan in the area shown as Holden Village in Figure 1. Although Rio Tinto never owned or operated the mine, they are managing and funding a several hundred million dollar clean-up to prevent future water and soil contamination and to reclaim the former mine site under the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Superfund process. The former mine included an onsite mill and a nearby housing complex for the miners. Howe Sound developed the mine as a series of near-horizontal drifts and tunnels, interspersed with stopes and shafts that connect different mine levels underground. The tunnels that were excavated to develop the mine total nearly 100 km in length.During development of the underground workings, Howe Sound removed more than 230,000 cubic meters (m3) of waste rock from the tunnels and deposited this material in two waste rock piles. Ore was processed from the mine in the onsite mill to produce a copper concentrate that was shipped off site for smelting. Roughly 10 million tonnes of tailings were produced as a by-product of the milling operation, most of which were deposited in three large impoundments (Tailings Piles 1, 2 and 3) directly south of and adjacent to Railroad Creek. Howe Sound closed the mine in 1957. In 1961, the property was transferred to Holden Village, Inc. (Holden Village), a not-for-profit corporation that maintains a year-round community and operates an interdenominational religious retreat in the former miners’ town. With the exception of the patented private land, the remainder of the Site is on National Forest lands and is administered by the U.S. Forest Service. The mine is remote. It is only accessible by boat or float plane from Chelan, Washington, up Lake Chelan to Lucerne, nearly 40 km. Vehicle access from Lucerne to the mine is provided through a 17.5-km-long winding gravel road that climbs 640 meters in elevation. The general site features are shown in Figure 2. Physical setting The Holden Mine is located on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountain Range at an elevation between 975 and 1,050 m above mean sea level. Holden Mine was developed adjacent to Railroad Creek, which lies in a glacial U-shaped valley carved into the igneous and metamorphic bedrock with steep-sided slopes (Figure 2)."

Beaver Creek Clean River Project will satisfy the consent decree requirements by capturing and treating combined sewage overflows. The project consists of, approximately, 2,700 feet of 30-inch trenchless pipe installation, a new screening/disinfecting facility, an expansion of an existing diversion structure, and a 72-inch internal diameter, 530-foot long mined tunnel. The tunnel portions are being progressed as early release packages. This paper presents the geotechnical exploration program and the subsurface conditions encountered; interpretation of the geotechnical conditions; and, approach to developing stand-alone packages for the tunnels to mitigate construction and schedule risks and continue to advance the project.

The purpose of geochemical research in the Alabama copper belt is to re-evaluate geochemical prospecting methods as related to igneous and metamorphic rocks in a humid climate. It is also a correlation of laboratory research on copper mineral solubility with geochemical anomalies over known mineral deposits. Geochemical prospecting in warm humid climates involves different problems and conditions than geochemical prospecting in semiarid areas. Stems and others (1972) reported soil surveys in a humid tropical environment in Bahia, Brazil, were not effective in outlining areas of copper mineralization. Clarke (1971) reported false anomalies in lateritic soils in Alabama over mafic rocks. Bjorklund (1971) reported biogeochemical sampling in Finland was ineffective in detailed work outlining potential mineralized areas, although it may serve to indicate regional areas of high mineral potential. During this investigation, water, stream sediments, residual soil, and organic matter, mainly twigs, were collected from three known copper-mineralized areas. Samples were selected so as to cross mineralized outcrops and results were correlated with copper stability charts as reported by Silman (1958) and Schmitt (1962). The geochemical research performed in Alabama should be applicable to other humid areas. Geologic, Climatic, and Pedologic Setting The area of investigation is in the southern end of the Appalachian eugosyncline in eastern Alabama. It includes the Hatchet Creek prospect, Pyriton mining district, and Stone Hill copper mine. The copper mineralization is in calcium-rich metasediments that lie along the western flank of a high rank metamorphic belt. All three deposits are in the uplands of the Ashland Plateau section of the Piedmont physiographic province. The Hatchet Creek copper prospect (Clarke, 1963; 1971) consists of three mineralized areas that contain pyrrhotite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite in small crisscrossing veinlets.

This paper discusses the effect of water chemistry, reagent type, and other environmental factors on the performance of sulfide mineral size reduction and froth flotation processes. Two specific problems will be discussed: 1) the importance of appropriately utilizing the electrochemical window that is created in the grinding process to enhance sulfide mineral recovery by froth flotation; and 2) the impact of steel grinding media versus autogenous grinding on the efficiency of sulfide mineral flotation with varying thiol collectors and water sources.

INTRODUCTION Ever since miners were faced with the task of moving ore, some form of scraper has been in use. At first, men and beasts of burden supplied the power to move the scraper, and later, machines were developed for this purpose. In the early 1900s, a few mining properties used small pneumatic single-drum winches to pull loaded scrapers to a raise or ore pocket, and the empty scraper then was dragged back to the muck pile by a miner, as shown in Fig. 1. Just prior to 1920, an improvement was introduced, using two single-drum hoists. As illustrated by Fig. 2, the second hoist was used to return the empty scraper to the muck pile. However, this arrangement still re¬quired two men, one operating each hoist. The next developmental step was to eliminate the second man by locating the hoists side-by-side and using one man to control both hoists. As illustrated by Fig. 3, this involved the use of a tail rope over a sheave to pull the scraper back. The greatest progress in development and the great¬est increase in the use of slusher haulers occurred between 1920 and 1930. In 1921, the Sullivan Machinery Co. designed and built the first two-drum scraper oper¬ating on the principle illustrated by Fig. 4. It was powered by a 4.5-kW (6-hp) Turbinair(r) motor and would pull a 450-kg (1000-1b) load at 0.61 m/s (120 fpm). In 1922, this unit was shipped to the Verona Mining Co. of Caspian, MI, and it experienced immediate success in the Lake Superior iron ore district. Since the two-drum slusher was much less expensive and more efficient than hand mucking, the Lake Superior mines were saved from financial disaster when iron-ore prices fell 25% between 1923 and 1925. Immediately there¬after, a demand developed for slushers that would oper¬ate with electric power, which was considerably cheaper than compressed-air power. In 1923, the Sullivan Machinery Co. responded with the first electric-powered double-drum hoist. During subsequent years, design improvements in¬cluded separate tail-drum gearing to increase the tail¬drum speed, as welt as a number of safety features such as rope guides. One result of these improvements and their utilization by the Michigan iron mines was an in¬crease of 100% in the tons of ore per miner per day in those mines between 1924 and 1929. Since the two-drum slusher was capable only of straight-line mucking, it was not a practical machine for use in open stopes. In 1929, the Sullivan Machinery Co. introduced the first three-drum slusher. As illustrated by Fig. 5, two tail drums and one hauling drum were provided. A tail sheave could be placed at each side of the stope, and the ore then could be loaded and hauled to a central point from the entire width of the stope. During the 1930s, progressively larger slushers were demanded. By 1940, two- and three-drum units were available with motor power as high as 45 kW (60 hp), and slusher power continued to increase after 1940. Be¬tween 1951 and 1952, Joy Manufacturing Co. designed a 112-kW (150-hp) two-drum Blusher for the Climax Molydenum Co. Although there has been no demand for a slusher more powerful than this, 150- to 225-kW (200- to 300-hp) slushers are quite feasible at the pres¬ent time. During the last 30 years, many slusher improvements have been made to the operating life, operational safety, and ease of operation and maintenance. Increased tail-drum speeds have decreased overall scraping times. Rope guards, totally enclosed drums, and operator shields have reduced the hazards of injury due to wire¬rope breakage. Improvements in lubrication have made the slushers relatively maintenance-free, with long operating lives. The introduction of spring-actuated drag brakes prevented uncontrolled unreeling of dis¬engaged drums, allowing the development of practical remote-control slusher operation. Remote control now is available in a choice of all-air, all-electric, or air¬electric slushers. Significant changes in the markets for coal have taken place since World War II, As used in this study the term ?coal? will refer to bituminous coal, The anthracite industry in size, characteristics, and problems differs materially from the bituminous coal industry, These changes have both influenced and been influenced by the mechanization of mines, and by decreased distribution costs, especially in transportation. It is the purpose of this paper to examine these post-war changes, to assess their impact upon the production and distribution of coal, and to explore future market developments in the light of past and present trends and relationships. The layman lacks adequate informatian on the production, demand, and distribution of coal. There are two reasons for this. First, there is a relative lack of statistics coveting the industry, Coal operators and distributors are not required to file with any government agency the type of much more complete statistics filed by the railroads and public utilities with national and State agencies. The Bureau of Mines assembles much useful information on the coal industry, but several areas, including that of investment and finance, have no central depository which can be used to keep the public informed of the nature and extent of the industry and its problems.

Piles of sulfide-bearing overburden, ore, and tailings have the potential to generate acid drainage (AD) when exposed to an oxidizing environment. Laboratory column experiments were conducted using acid-generating overburden material with an added surface amendment of limestone and/or lime. Artificial rainwater was introduced and allowed to drain through the columns. Results showed that the limestone and/or lime reacted with the acidic rock, resulting in the precipitation of a hardpan layer of gypsum and amorphous iron oxy-hydroxide at the surface. The hardpan layer significantly reduced the effective permeability of the column. Based on this study, hardpan layers can be created as chemical caps to significantly reduce the infiltration of rainwater and snowmelt into acidic overburden or tailings material. Unlike traditional capping methods (for example, clay and high density polyethylene (HDPE) covers), chemical caps are self-healing.

In 1956 the Legislature of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania created a "Coal Research Board" in the Department of Mines and Mineral Industries. Over the years through amendments to the original legislation, the scope of authority for research has been expanded from the narrow area of improving and increasing the utilization of coal to covering all aspects of coal technology and any other area of interest which would be of value to the coal industry. In January of 1964, the Board commenced a vigorous program using appropriated funds and funds donated by the coal industry to finance a research program devoted to seeking solutions to the mine drainage problem. A review of published literature on the treatment of mine drainage indicated that much work done up to that point in time concerned only the mechanism of mine drainage formation and theoretical chemistry. Very few applied, developmental, or engineering studies had been devoted to finding practical solutions to the problem of polluted waters being discharged from active or abandoned mines. Projects were therefore undertaken on a wide variety of more utilitarian approaches. This paper will discuss briefly some of the pollution abatement approaches which have been funded by the Coal Research Board of this State, and will describe in some detail a multistage flash evaporator treatment plant now under construction.

Current steel consumption for grinding media, mill liners and rods in North America runs in excess of 400,000 tpy in the mineral processing industries. Steel consumption ranks as one of the major consumables along with energy in most operations with total annual industry expenditures in excess of $275 million. It is generally agreed that there are 3 main categories of wear responsible for this metal loss. These three main types can be loosely defined as follows; 1) Abrasion. The cutting, rubbing, scrapping and gouging of the metal surface by the ore with which it is in contact; 2) Impact. Spalling on both micro and macro scale, breakage, and deformation due to metal to metal contact; 3) Corrosion. Gentlemen: I am pleased and regard it as a priviledge to give you a report on rapid roadheading with heading machines in the coal mining industry of Western Germany. Importance of Heading Operations in the West German Coal Mining Industry Every year about 770 km of headings are driven In the seams of the West German coal mines, most of them gate roads, the rest rise headings, to open new faces. In thick seams the heading operations are carried out entirely in the coal, in thin seams the country rock has to be ripped. The total length of 770 km corresponds to a rock volume of roughly 9.5 million m3; this figure underlines the importance of the heading operations in the coal mining industry of our country.

AMAX Inc. climax's mine-mill complex at Climax, Colorado is best known for its molybdenite production: 50,000 TPY of molybdenite flotation concentrate (95% MoS2) from mill heads containing 0.35% molybdenite. Less recognized are the byproducts that are concentrated from the tails generated in the rougher flotation circuit (see Figure 1). Climax recovers a heavy mineral concentrate by passing the rougher tailings from molybdenite flotation over Humphrey spirals (Figure 2a). This concentrate is floated using xanthate at pH 4 to remove sulfides, principally pyrite. The tails from the pyrite float are then cleaned of quartz, feldspar and light minerals by tabling (Figure 2b). Amine flotation follows at pH 1.5 and 75°C to float monazite (Figure 2c). The present circuit at Climax dries the monazite flotation tailings and utilizes high intensity cross-belt magnetic separation Figure 2d) to generate a high grade wolframite concentrate and a low-grade cassiterite product, both of which are contaminated with the mineral brannerite, (UO, TiO, UO2)TiO3. The uranium specifications have recently become difficult to meet due to the increasing percentage of brannerite reporting in the mill feed. A plant is being built utilizing hot sulfuric acid and sodium chlorate to leach this uranium from the monazite flotation tailings prior to their being fed to the wolframite- cassiterite magnetic separators. This modification is the subject of our paper.

This investigation addressed the possibility of producing pellet feed at a silica content of = 1.0% using a representative sample of Samarco´s mechanical flotation tailings. This sample contained 11.0% Fe and presented an F80 = 116 µm and a d50 = 63 µm. The higher silica content was verified in the coarser fractions and the higher iron content in the fraction -37 µm. Specular hematite is the most abundant mineralogical phase in the fraction -37 µm. The technological tests used one of four methods: magnetic concentration using a wet high-intensity magnetic separator, magnetic concentration using a SLon high-gradient magnetic separator, reverse flotation or direct flotation. The methods using the magnetic concentrator SLon, reverse flotation and direct flotation did not present results meeting the target of the study: iron content in the concentrate (rougher stage) greater than 34% or iron recovery greater than 80%. Cleaner stages were not achievable with the resulting concentrates. In contrast, the most successful method consisted of using wet high-intensity magnetic separators (WHIMS) as a rougher stage and reverse flotation as a cleaner stage. Using this route, it was possible to produce a pellet feed with a silica grade of 1.0% and high specular hematite content.

When the Middle Ages were drawing to an end and Rotterdam, then still a small fishing port, began to extend its trade relations to continental ports handling general cargo, a development was initiated which was to give Rotterdam a predominant position in maritime traffic in Europe 300 years later. Despite many setbacks and the silting up of the mouths of the Rhine and Meuse rivers, the port experienced a new rise towards the end of the previous century after the dunes at Hook of Holland had been cut through as planned by Dutch engineer Caland. With its favourable location in the mouth area of the Rhine and a hinterland opened up by waterways it was merely a matter of the city council pursuing a far-sighted policy to make the best of these natural advantages. Thus new port installations were erected on the southern bank of the Meuse in the first quarter of this century, which were expanded in the course of the subsequent decades. The New Waterway became the main artery for industrial enterprises, in particular oil industries, which sprang up along its banks (picture 1). Whereas 30 years ago Rotterdam's Waalhaven, with its new jettees for general cargo and mainly bulk goods, was still one of the most modern terminals, the growing size of ships, which increased by leaps and bounds for tankers, in particular towards the end of the 'fifties, necessitated much larger harbour facilities built further and further towards deep water.

The Mississippi embayment east of the Mississippi River is part of a vast geologic and hydrologic province. The abundance of water available is largely responsible for the agricultural history of the area and is perhaps the key factor in the rapidly accelerating trend toward industrialization. The multiple artesian aquifer systems that underlie the region, and the alluvial aquifer along the Mississippi River are virtually undeveloped sources of fresh water in that they are yielding only a fraction of the water available. The potential yield of the 12 aquifer systems is estimated to be about 25,000 mgd (million gallons per day), of which only about 600 mgd is presently being withdrawn. The amount of water in storage in these systems is about 1,600 trillion gallons. Ground water having a dissolved-solids content of less than 500 parts per million is generally available at depths of less than 1,000 feet, and water having a dissolved-solids content of less than 1,000 parts per million is available in some places to depths of more than 3,000 feet. Iron is the most common troublesome chemical constituent in the ground water. Water in varying amounts is also available from streams within the region. The amount of water which originates within the region and which leaves it as streamflow during a year averages about 50 million acre-feet (about 45,000 mgd). An additional 375 million acre-feet (about 340,000 mgd) leaves the region as streamflow during an average year, this amount having originated outside of the region. Some streams have considerable flow during periods of no precipitation, and the water during these periods generally has a low dissolved-solids content.

Two mineral processing facilities in North America required near terminal density slurries to perform de-bottle necking in their circuits. The installation at Barrick Goldstrike to ensure efficient oxidation conditions and throughputs in the refractory ore treating autoclaves. The Kidd Metallurgical Division unit to provide a steeper tailings slope to extend the life of the existing tailings dam. To achieve these goals, both operations selected a Supaflo "High Compression" Thickener following on site pilot plant evaluation. Commissioning and the first year of operation is reviewed. Operating data is compared with the pilot plant data. In particular, unusual doughnut formation at Goldstrike and the effect of temperature on the terminal density at Kidd Metallurgical Division are discussed.
