A relatively simple model of grinding which incorporates both the Bond grindability equations and the population balance equations has been extended to form a comprehensive simulation package that can describe most kinds of conventional grinding circuits. The package has two programs, with the first consisting of an input program which helps the user to specify the prescribed circuit, while the second program performs the actual simulation. The package serves two main purposes - i) as a check on mill design, with the output providing not only predictions for the product passing size but also of the full product size distribution, and ii) as a means to assess the likely effects on the product size distribution of operating under different sets of conditions.

The purpose of the project is to divert flood flows of North Potato Creek. The project is located in the southeast corner of Tennessee near Copperhill, approximately 160 kilometers north of Atlanta, Georgia. The project consists of: a 28-meter high dam, a 90-centimeter diameter outlet conduit; an emergency spillway; and a 4.0-meter diameter hard rock trans-basin diversion tunnel. This floodwater management system was part of Cities Service Company mine safety program for the Cherokee orebody which is partially located within the stream channel. The following paper describes the entire project development from feasibility studies to design and construction management.

Andalusite is a member of the sillimanite group of minerals consisting of andalusite, kyanite, and sillimanite. These minerals are the structural polymorphs of Al,Si05 (the anhydrous silicate of aluminium) and although chemically similar, they differ in physical properties due to their different crystal structures. For further information on the sillimanite group, see the chapter on Kyanite and Related Minerals that follows. The minerals are generally the products of the metamorphism of alumina-rich sediments and are found in schists, gneisses, or hornfelses, which have undergone either regional or thermal metamorphism from their original form. Sedimentary deposits may also form since the minerals are chemically and physically resistant to breakdown. When heated to a sufficiently high temperature the sillimanite group minerals convert to mullite with a resultant volume expansion and the liberation of silica. Due to the stability of the mullite formed, its high hot strength and resistance to chemical and physical erosion, they are widely used in the manufacture of refractories and special ceramics (Table 1). The reaction can be represented as follows: [ ] The worldwide use of these minerals depends to a large degree on their availability (Fig. 1). Andalusite, with its lower conversion temperature and the lowest volume expansion on being heated is the natural choice as a raw material to produce energy-saving refractories without prior calcination. The Republic of South Africa holds by far the largest minable andalusite deposits of the world, estimated at some 70 Mt of known in situ reserves. The only other large commercial production of andalusite comes from France, with known reserves of about 5 Mt. Potential new deposits are known from China, Ireland, Australia, and South America. World consumption of andalusite in special performance refractories has risen from less than 10 ktpy in 1960 to nearly 300 ktpy in 1990, which is due to cost effectiveness in many industrial applications compared to other conventional refractory products. Andalusite-based refractories have traditionally been used in Europe, South Africa, and the Far East; usage in America was limited in the past due to relatively high delivery costs and availability of other local refractory minerals. However, there is a significant trend towards greater use of andalusite in North America, thus opening new markets and replacing other traditional refractory raw materials. GEOLOGY Andalusite occurs in metamorphosed rocks of clay-like com- position, as in the andalusite-hornfelses in thermal aureoles (contact metamorphism), formed under conditions of high temperatures and low stress, and in regional metamorphic rocks, such as the andalusite-schists. These schists are mostly unconnected with definite igneous intrusions but were presumably also formed at high temperatures and under low stress. Andalusite can also appear in alluvial deposits associated with the primary deposits. At depths of 10 to 20 km, temperatures of up to 450°C might be expected. Another result of increasing depth is an increase of pressure due to the load of the rock cover. The load stresses involved in metamorphism is generally believed to lie in the range 0 to 10 000 bars. During contact metamorphism the increase in temperature is brought about by the injection of magma. The temperature reached in the country rock at some distance from the igneous body will always be less than the initial temperature of the intrusion, which is presumably less than 1 200°C, and will vary with time and distance from the contact. A simple metamorphic reaction involving dehydration of an aluminous sediment can be: [ ] At higher temperatures sillimanite would form at the expense of andalusite, while kyanite would be the mineral formed at higher pressures, as can be seen in the phase diagram of A12Si05 (Fig. 2).

The present study has investigated the leachability of cadmium sulfide minerals by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and the electrochemical reactions involved in the process. Using a cyclic voltammetric technic and carbon-paste-CdS electrodes, it was found that the bio-oxidation of semiconductor cadmium sulfide minerals consisted of a number of intermediate electrochemical reactions. The overall reaction was found to be controlled by solid state diffusion as suggested by the chrono-amperometric and chrono-potentiometric measurements. The activation energy of solid state diffusion was determined by the Sand's method to be AE=24.3 kJ. A generalized mechanism was proposed for the bacterial oxidation of cadmium sulfide by T. ferrooxidan and an explanation given for the importance of high redox potential of leach solution versus the decomposition potential of the sulfide mineral. Furthermore, the effects of n-type or p-type character of CdS substrates relative to their bioleachability was discussed.

The rugged foothills of the Allegheny Mountains in Washington County, Southwestern Pennsylvania, lend their terrain very well to the use of aerial tram systems to carry refuse from Bethlehem Mines' two preparation plants to disposal areas some distance from the plant site. Bethlehem Nines Corporation has three deep mines in this area, all of which are mining the Pittsburgh Coal Seam, The raw coal is prepared for metallurgical use in a preparation plant at each mine, Trio of these preparation plants, Mine No, 51, Ellsworth and Mine No. 58 Marianna, use aerial tram systems to dispose of reject material.

Southeast Asian countries cannot maintain their economic growth rate without the development of their mining industries. To make this development as sustainable as possible requires sound fundamentals securing not only economic progress and environment protection but also improvements in occupational safety and health (OSH) for the miners. Mining in South East Asia is still very labor intense and dangerous. Tremendous achievements from world class mining operations in advanced mining countries can be used as role models to improve the status quo of the Southeast Asian countries in OSH management. Know-how transfer, therefore, is a key factor for major improvements. Effects of this transfer based on a multi-level approach will be discussed based on a case study. It describes the transfer from German to Vietnamese hard coal mining industry. Crucial requisites for excellent achievements in OSH in Southeast Asian mining countries are also mentioned.

Comminution represents one of the major costs of mineral recovery from low-grade ores. Efficient mineral recovery in a typical low-grade ore grinding-flo¬tation process depends on grinding the ore small enough to liberate mineralization without producing excessive slimes, which would result in higher power and flotation reagent costs. Size criteria for efficient grinding should be stated in terms of the distribution of mineralization sizes, but as the mineralization-size distribution is difficult to determine, less desirable criteria of absolute particle-size distribution (PSD) are used in practice. Thus, there is considerable incentive to be able to analyze and predict the PSD performance of grinding circuits for control and optimization of the process. Any realistic model of a grinding circuit must account for recycle of oversize material; such oversize recycle adds to the total mill load and limits total production rate. Simulation of such closed-circuit operation to study grind factors affecting total throughput can be done in a straightforward fashion provided recycle calculations can be added to an accurate input-output model of PSD in the grinding mill itself. Such a total simulation of mill performance is of obvious practical value in assessing the practicality and benefits of various over-all mill control schemes and/or modes of operation. For example, considerable interest has been shown in the development of continuous on-line particle-size sensors and such instruments should be an operating reality in a few years. A total closed-circuit PSD model of this type would be invaluable in the utilization of, and in predicting the pay-out from, such an on-line particle-size sensor. The purpose of this paper is to present a new approach to the development of an input-output PSD model of a grinding mill. The model is continuous in the par¬ticle size coordinate, L, and is based on the principle of a particle population balance along the particle size coordinate. Many of the trace elements found in coal are associated with mineral matter, making it possible to remove them by physical coal cleaning. As part of work funded by the Electric Power Research Institute, both conventional and advanced coal cleaning processes were found to provide large reductions in the concentration of many trace elements that, if released into the atmosphere, are considered to be potentially toxic or environmentally harmful. Advanced physical cleaning technologies appear to provide greater reductions than conventional technologies. Chemical cleaning processes may also remove many trace elements, possibly including organically-bound elements such as beryllium. Care must be taken in the disposal of coal cleaning plant refuse because oxidation and leaching of this material can create highly acidic leachate and many trace elements are mobile in an acid environment. Laboratory leaching procedures are potentially useful in determining the degree of risk of water contamination by trace elements should an acid environment form.

A ventilation survey was conducted in an underground longwall trona mine. The mine is relatively shallow and categorized as a gassy mine. The ventilation system includes three intake and six exhaust shafts, and three surface axial fans ventilate the mine in a blowing configuration. Airflow quantity, pressure losses and air psychrometric characteristics were quantified, and the influence of moving cages and skips in the shaft examined. The benefits of utilizing high-accuracy digital pressure transducers and advanced psychrometers were seen when undertaking a “leapfrogging” survey to gather data needed to build a computer ventilation model. Two underground booster fans with VFDs are idle but available at the mine. The ventilation model was used to determine the optimal booster fan locations to decrease operating cost by reducing the load carried by the main fans. A leakage study was conducted to evaluate the effects on the system of additional pressure from a booster fan. The study finally prepares a future ventilation model for the next 15 years of mine operation and investigates the effect of proposed scenarios.

Long tunnels with only one access shaft pose many program problems for logistics, combine these with the requirement to drive directly out under the seabed for 10.2 km, and the program issues become even more challenging. The Musaimeer outfall tunnel was one such tunnel and to meet and eventually improve on the planned completion date required a complex and extensive management of all tunnel logistics required to support consistent tunneling for a two-year period. This technical paper will discuss the management issues and solutions implemented to meet the challenges of the Outfall tunnel construction.

A modular computer program APEX (AMAX Process Evaluation Executive), has been developed at AMAX Extractive R&D, Golden, Colorado to facilitate rapid simulation of steady state material and energy balances of existing and/or proposed metallurgical process flowsheets. Currently, APEX is being used for the design, analysis, and evaluation of several of AMAX?s Nickel, Molybdenumand Tungsten processes. A unique feature of APEX is that it allows specifications of flow rates and compositions for different solid size fractions in addition to aqueous organic and gaseous phases. Thus, a metallurgical process which may involve crushing, grinding, flotation, leaching, washing, solvent extraction, precitation and refining operations can be simulated in a single computer run using APEX. APEX requires two input data files. The first is a process data file which includes physical and thermodynamic properties of the various chemical components of interest. This data file is unique to the process under study and does not require changes for alterations in the process flowsheet. The second data file is specific to a simulation case and includes descriptions of the flowsheet, various feed streams and the process equipment's operating conditions. In addition to temperature, pressure and percent solids, calculated information for each stream includes weight and volumetric flow rates, chemical compositions, specific gravities and enthalpies of solid, liquid and gas phases. For each process equipment in the flowsheet, APEX prints its operating conditions and detailed information about the streams that enter and leave the unit. Models of several general unit operations are preprogrammed in APEX. Also, the modular design of APEX permits quick and easy additions of simulation models which are specific to new and/or unique process operations. To study process stability and optimization, APEX permits several cases of a flow-sheet to be run together. Three simulations of the Moa Bay Nickel process have been excluded to illustrate the ease and flexibility of using the APEX system.

Many existing tunnels have deteriorated as they age, requiring a massive amount of investment for their rehabilitation. The tunnel of interest in this paper is being rehabilitated by adding precast concrete arch panels under the existing concrete ceiling, and measuring the gap between them was the objective of this research. For this purpose, a mobile 3D laser/thermal scanner was used for scanning the tunnel, especially for the purpose of measuring its profile. To calculate the gap, the distance between the tunnel profile and the theoretical profile of the concrete arches was measured. Additionally, an in-house program was developed using MATLAB to automate the data processing to determine the above-referenced gaps. Results were provided in the form of heat maps showing the measured gap.

Heavy media separation (HMS) is one of the most widely used gravity methods in the mineral industry. The feed is separated, according to the specific gravities, into two products; float (light) and sink (heavy) particles. The universal acceptance of the process is due to simplicity, efficiency and robustness for ease of control. However, if optimum separation is desired during the operation of heavy media plants, a delicate balance of a number of variables is essential. Among the variables, the two which are generally the most frequently checked and controlled are specific gravity and consistency of the medium. The latter is a function of the settling rate of the media. The medium is generally made up of finely ground ferrosilicon, magnetite, galena, shale, quartz sand, clay contaminants and water. The frequently present clay in the medium acts as a stabilizing agent, since the coarse heavy medium solids (called media) would quickly settle if they were mixed only in water. Clay concentration of the medium varies between 3-7% by height (1,2). Although clay is essential for reasonable media stability, clay concentration greater than 7-8% imparts too high a viscosity to the medium, and the feed cannot accurately stratify and therefore separate into the required products. To be on the safe side, plant operators clean the medium from most of the clays, and would rather work at a lower stability than have a very viscous medium on their hands. The most recent advance in the area of consistency control rlas made by the introduction of atomized (spherical) ferrosilicon (3). This extended the upper limit of the use of ground ferrosilicon from 3.3 to approximately 3.6, broadening the range of the optimum operating conditions. A viscosity control method was also worked out by the use of low cost additives which lower viscosity while retaining a favorable low setting rate (4). Recently (5) polymers have been successfully used in oil well drilling muds then the requirements were mainly to suspend and transport cuttings during the periodic shutdowns and dril1ings respectively. Federal laws mandate the presence of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines and provide guidelines for harmful gas removal. After an explosion, harmful gases can follow survivors into an RA and can reach a deadly concentration. Investigators from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested 12 ventilation system configurations (VSCs) to purge sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas from a built-in-place (BIP) RA in the Experimental Mine in Bruceton, PA. Using a borehole air supply, tests were conducted with airflows of 750 and 1,000 standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM). Excluding a VSC where the air inlet was 1.98 m (78 in) from the air outlet, the results show that the time to purge the SF6 concentration from 1,000 parts per million (ppm) to 25 ppm ranged from 26 to 29 minutes for an airflow of 750 SCFM and ranged from 18 to 23 minutes for an airflow 1,000 SCFM. Mines can use this information to reduce purge time in case of a mine disaster and determine which VSC to avoid. INTRODUCTION After a fire or an explosion in an underground mine, the concentration of carbon monoxide can reach a fatal level. In a mine disaster, the main goal is to escape. However, if miners cannot escape, they have to migrate to a location to find refuge and, if possible, communication, and a borehole source for a fresh air supply. To ensure survival of the miners, Federal laws mandate the presence of a refuge alternative (RA) within 304.5 m (1,000 ft) of the nearest mining face. In addition, Code of Federal Regulations Title 30 CFR Section 7 sets the guidelines for personnel tracking, RAs, and the removal of noxious gases in underground coal mines (Mineral Resources, 30 CFR, 2014). Federal regulations define an RA as a protected, secure space with an isolated atmosphere and integrated components (Mineral Resources, 30 CFR, 2014). There are three types of RAs: portable metal RAs, portable tent-type RAs, and built-in-place (BIP) RAs. A BIP RA is constructed using masonry or other stoppings to create an isolated space in a mined-out area. Blast doors are installed in one or both of the stoppings for the miners to enter the RA. Furthermore, RAs must provide the following components: breathable air, food, water, air monitoring, and harmful gas removal. Federal regulations have emphasized the mandate for breathable air and harmful gas removal in the following words: “Purging or other effective procedures shall be provided for the airlock to dilute the carbon monoxide concentration to 25 ppm” (Mineral Resources, 30 CFR, 2014). The purpose of the mine ventilation system is to provide a sufficient quantity of air to the underground mine workings, to dilute methane and other contaminants, to maintain a suitable working environment, and to prevent accidents from happening (Cheng and Wei, 2014). In addition, the organic nature of coal amplifies risks from poisonous gases, explosions, and fires (Engström et al., 2018). If an underground coal mine ventilation system fails after an explosion, the concentration of toxic gases, most notably carbon monoxide, will increase. Carbon monoxide is dangerous because it creates tissue hypoxia by binding to hemoglobin (Özmen and Aksoy, 2015).

Discussion by S. Serata and K. Fuenkajorn Background Results of the above study in the August 1991 issue of Mining Engineering offer valuable lessons in the solution of cutter-roof problems. The original study plan was initiated by the discussion authors to solve the problems using the "stress control method" of mining (Serata 1976, 1982; Serata, Carr and Martin, 1984; Serata and Gardner, 1986; Serata, Gardner and Preston, 1986; Serata, Gardnerand Shrinivasan, 1986; Serata and Kikuchi, 1986; Serata, Preston and Galagoda, 1987) However, the plan and the planner were changed to the arrangement reported in the paper. The change was considered reasonable at the time due to the mine engineers' uncertainties about the stress control method. Consequently, the basic principle of the study was shifted from the original stress control method to the method described in the paper, which will be called the "yield pillar method" for the purposes of this discussion. The paper convinces the reader that the yield pillar method fails to solve the cutter-roof problems. This doesn't mean that the stress control method also fails. Actually the contrary is true, as discussed below. Limitation of the yield pillar method The paper illustrates clearly how poorly the yield pillar method performs in solving the problem. The reason for this failure is the lack of the protective stress envelope needed to stabilize the cutter roof. Unfortunately, the protective envelope cannot be formed properly without utilizing the stress control method of mining. Changing the pillar size does not make much difference in the roof stability. Stress measurement The key issue is how to form the global stress envelope to make the gate entries safe for production. Therefore, measuring the stress condition of the ground around the mine opening is critically important to solving the cutter-roof problem, regardless of the method applied. With regard to the stress measurement, there is a serious question as to the reported stress state of [6 i = -51.7 MPa (-7499 psi), G2 = -44.5 MPa (-6458 psi) and 63 = -30.8 MPa (-4465 psi)]. It is mechanically impossible to have such a stress state at any location in the mine ground since the known initial vertical stress [o,,] is less than or equal to 800 psi. There may be a large stress state in the [61] direction, but that is possible only at the expense of the [63] value. Having the above stress tensors in the mine is simply impossible. The questionable, reported stress values could be attributed to the application of the overcoring method, which tends to produce erroneously large stress values in the extremely nonelastic mine ground. Stress control method The paper should be considered as a major contribution demonstrating the limitation of the yield pillar method. At the same time, the paper does not disprove the stress control method. However, in comparing the paper with stress control studies conducted in other similar failing grounds, the stress control method appears to be able to solve the problem more effectively. Therefore it is advisable that the mine not give up its efforts to solve the problem. Deep tillage is used widely as a Means of alleviating excessive soil compaction. There has been some concern that the voids created by deep tillage may collapse before a more natural soil structure develops, resulting in recompaction subsequent to deep tillage. A laboratory investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of pneumatically injecting organic material into the voids during deep tillage to prevent any significant recompaction from occurring. Various amendments were injected into the soil in the laboratory using a small-scale ripping and injection system. Measurements were made of selected soil properties to evaluate the feasibility of this method.

Coal blending inherently means homogenizing a mixture of coals so that, overall, the properties of the blend meet some specifications for maintaining power plant performance and emission requirements. In common practice, however, coal blending is at best coal mixing. If necessary, more sophisticated blending systems can produce a more homogeneous feed by using accurate weighing devices and on-line coal analyzers coupled with sampling systems. Blending can be accomplished at the mine, on stockpiles, and from bins, bunkers, and silos.

Mineralization features at the Bajo La Alumbrera porphyry copper-gold deposit are discussed as they affect gold leaching and copper flotation behavior. Alteration-mineralization geological blocks are assigned in the zoned body, and each required its own geostatistical model. They extend horizontally outward from potassic to the phyllic-propylitic boundary, vertically from surface down to 300 meters, and include oxide, secondary enriched, and hypogene mineralization. Copper and gold values are calculated geostatistically from assays and all available geologic-mineralogic information. Reserves are classified for each geologic block and for each open-pit bench into leach or float ore according to metal grades, geologic characteristics, and supergene-hypogene relations. Finally ore extraction behaviour is briefly described, grouping gold and copper reserves into metallurgical families.

Diasporic bauxite from the Mugla-Milas region was mechanically activated in a planetary mill for different activation times and the structural changes were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and specific surface area analysis (BET ? Burnauer, Emmett and Teller). Non-activated and activated bauxite samples were leached directly in alkaline (Na2O) solution at atmospheric conditions and the activation procedure led to the amorphization and structural disordering of the diasporic bauxite structure, which increased the dissolution efficiency. Effects of milling speed, liquid/bauxite ratio and leaching time on alumina extraction in direct alkaline leaching of diasporic bauxite were also studied. The alumina extraction was ~7% for non-activated bauxite and ~70% for activated (75 minute) bauxite. Key words: Diasporic bauxite, Mechanical activation, Alkaline leaching, Alumina extraction
