United States Antimony Corporation, at its Yankee Fork property in central Idaho, is currently using a combination of flotation, gravity-amalgamation, and concentrate cyanide leaching, silver sulfide precipitation, and activated charcoal loading to recover both silver and gold. Tine processes of flotation, milling, gravity concentration, amalgamation, concentrate leaching, sulfide precipitation and gold recovery via charcoal are discussed. The flow sheet illustrates the use of cyanidation as an alternative to shipment to a smelter.

Many appraisers/valuers believe that the only valuation method available within the cost approach category for real property appraisal is the depreciated replacement cost method. Some valuation and financial reporting standards setters also believe the same. This paper introduces the minerals appraiser to a number of useful methods for mineral property appraisal that are based primarily on the principle of contribution to value, the predominant economic principle in the cost approach. Most of these cost approach methods discussed are primarily for use in valuation of exploration tracts and resource properties that have no defined reserves. However, the powerful rural cost method can be used to calculate the contribution of categories of resources, reserves and other property components to the value of a mineral property. This method can be applied to mineral properties at all stages of development, including producing properties. The author reasons that standards and regulations pertaining to real property valuation should be modified, and underlying principles should be expanded, so as not to inhibit appropriate application of these cost approach methods.

If two fluid phases are brought into contact with a solid, one fluid may completely wet the surface to the exclusion of the other, or both may wet it, forming a three-phase line of contact. These relative wetting tendencies are quantified by the contact angle 0 which is related by Young's equation (1,2) [12 cos? = 13 ? 23] [to the three interfacial tensions (3). No contact angle for the first fluid, indicating that it does not wet the solid in the presence of the second, means that the difference between the two solid-fluid fluid surface tensions, - 8 is greater than (or just 13 -23 equal to) the fluid-fluid tension 12; a finite angle indicates that the difference is less.*]

In 1993, CONSOL began investigating new methods of permanently filling coal mine shafts, which after ventilation is stopped, may contain a potentially hazardous atmosphere. Fill materials such as fly ash/cement can be pumped, are non-combustible and non-incendiary but tend to flow into the mine entries. A non-flowable mixture has been developed that minimizes the volume of fill used. The paper presents our recent shaft filling experience including fly ash material properties, mix designs, field problems, placement success, and gas testing techniques.

Coal is becoming increasingly important as a major energy source in the face of the world's depleting energy mainly based on oil reserves. Coal is by far the most abundant fossil fuel both in the United States and abroad. Currently, because of increased mine mechanization, the fineness of preparation plant feed is increasing. Further, in the future as the grade of coal diminishes and the sulfur content increases, upgrading preparation of coal is very important. Because the density of coal is less than that of rock materials that occur as impurities, coal is separated from such waste largely by gravity-controlled processes for particle size between 5 inches and 28 mesh. If the size of coal particles is below 28 mesh, froth flotation is a good method for upgrading fine coal. Previously, numerous investigators have tried to upgrade coal values by froth flotation(1-16) and have achieved moderate success. However, the recovery and grade of coals in the concentrates are not always satisfactory, especially when the particle size is small. In general, when the size of coal is below 100 mesh, the above methods suffer from poor grade and low recovery. The reason for this is that as size decreases, the effects of gravity diminish, and other forces take effect.

Minerações Brasileiras Reunidas S.A. - MBR is a brazilian iron ore mining company geared for the export market. It is controlled by Companhia Auxiliar de Empresas de Minerações - CAEMI through its subsidiary Empreendimentos Brasi leiros de Minerações - EBM which holds 51% in MBR and is formed by CAEMI, the six major japanese steelmills and five japanese trading companies, Universe Tankships, Inc., and Indústria e Comércio de Minérios S.A. - ICOMI. The remaining 49% of MBR's capital are held by St. John del Rey Mining Company, a subsidiary of The Hanna Mining Company. MBR iron ore reserves exceed 1.5 billion tons of high grade ore distributed in 36 deposits located in the so-called IRON QUADRANGLE in the State of Minas Gerais. The Aguas Claras Mine is the largest presently known and highest grade deposit owned by MBR. Other mines such as Pico, Mutuca and Jangada are in operation at a combined rate of production of about 2 to 2. 5 million tons per year. The project consists of mine, railroad and marine terminal (slide). The Aguas Claras deposit, which is located about six kilometers southeast of Belo Horizonte the Capital of Minas Gerais, was selected for initial development. The Sistema Regional Centro of the Rede Ferroviária Federal, through its 6th Division known as the "Central " is responsible for the transportation of MBR ore, and provided the necessary railway construction to connect Mine and Terminal. The Terminal is located on Guaiba Island near the entrance to Sepetiba Bay, at about 120 kilometers west of Rio de Janeiro.

Optical fibers have revolutionized the telecommunication industry, because of their ability to transmit large amounts of data over long distances. Without optical fibers many of the communication technologies on which business, industry and research rely would be impossible. In addition to their use as communication devices, optical fibers are often used as sensors. Despite the great promise that optical fibers have for the development of many types of remote sensing devices, few remote sensing devices have been built for use in the mineral industries. This paper will describe the use of optical fibers as sensors for surfactant adsorption at mineral surfaces.

The depth capability of engineering seismographs has been greatly increased by the use of signal enhancement, a technique in which seismic waveforms created by repeated impacts are digitized, stored, and summed. Summation amplifies the signal and partially cancels background noise. This gives a clearer picture of the wave aid makes it possible to determine the travel tune of signals from 'eater depth. Signal enhancement combined with continuous display of waveform, permanent recording of waveform, and precision digital readout of travel time has opened new fields of application in mining and engineering. Recent work has clown that replacement sulfides can be distinguished seismically from country rock at Bistee, Ariz. Work on the Iron Range of Minnesota indication,: that, by using a 300 pound weight as the source, the Biwabik iron Formation can be traced down dip to several hundreds of feet traverses over known areas show that reflections can sometimes be identified. Reflection, if identified preclsely, give a mere accurate estimate of depth and buried topography. The Relief Canyon gold deposit is located approximately twenty- four kilometers east of the town of Lovelock in Northwestern Nevada. At Relief Canyon, the Late Triassic Grass Valley Formation has been thrust over the Late Triassic Natchez Pass Formation. The lower plate Natchez Pass Formation is composed of massive gray dolomitic limestone which is locally silty and sandy. The upper plate Grass Valley Formation is composed of shale, siltstone, argillite and quartzite. Gold mineralization at Relief Canyon occurs along the highly brecciated thrust contact between these two formations. Weak gold mineralization often occurs above the thrust in the Grass Valley Formation, however, most of the ore grade mineralization is present below the thrust in the brecciated Natchez Pass Formation or where the two formations are mixed as a result of movement along the thrust. Several types of gold mineralization have been recognized at Relief Canyon. A large amount of the ore is present as a jasperoid breccia, however, significant amounts of ore occur as a mixed breccia composed of upper plate rock, fresh limestone, clay and jasperoid breccia. Gold ore also occurs in a fresh limestone breccia which contains a large amount of clay. Below masses of jasperoid, jasperoid stringers containing gold extend into the fresh limestone. Gold mineralization at Relief Canyon appears to be truly disseminated and has the typically associated trace elements of arsenic, antimony, mercury and fluorine. The Relief Canyon deposit can be classified as a structurally controlled disseminated gold deposit. Other deposits that fit this classification are the Pinson and Dee gold mines.

The hydrothermal agglomerating process described (U.S. Pat. 3,235,371, (1966)) is different from the conventional high temperature processes. Green pellets or briquettes made with mixtures of moist iron ore concentrates and burned or hydrated lime fines are hardened in an autoclave at 198°C and under steam pressure for 1/2 to 5 hours, with or without previous drying. Under the neutral conditions, oxidation of magnetite does not occur as in the conventional processes. The resulting agglomerates are hard and resistant to abrasion and weathering, and they do not disintegrate in the Linder test. The equipment required for the process is not complicated, and favorable operating costs are projected because of the low temperature and efficient heat recuperation. A low capital investment makes the process attractive even when the annual pellet production is below a million tons.

"In March 2013, the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County began final design of the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (JWPCP) Effluent Outfall Tunnel project. The new, approximately 7-mile, 18-ft internal diameter tunnel will provide additional capacity and redundancy for the existing 8- and 12-foot diameter tunnels, which were built in 1937 and 1958, respectively. Connections to an existing, active 14-foot arch force main and four existing ocean outfalls ranging from 5- to 10-foot diameter are required. This paper will present geological features for the project, and details of the proposed post-tensioned tunnel liner and associated structures. INTRODUCTION The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (Sanitation Districts) are 23 independent special districts serving approximately 5.3 million residents in Los Angeles County. Seventeen of the districts that furnish sewerage services to the metropolitan Los Angeles area are signatory to a Joint Outfall Agreement that provides for a regional, interconnected system of facilities known as the Joint Outfall System (JOS). The JOS service area is shown in Figure 1. The JOS serves an area that encompasses 73 cities as well as unincorporated territory and parts of the City of Los Angeles. The JOS provides wastewater collection, treatment, reuse, and disposal for residential, commercial, and industrial users, and it includes seven treatment plants, the largest of which is the JWPCP, located in the City of Carson. Currently, secondary treated effluent is conveyed through two 6-mile long parallel tunnels, 8- and 12-feet in diameter, from the JWPCP to a manifold structure located at Royal Palms Beach, near White Point on the Palos Verdes (PV) Peninsula, from which four seafloor outfalls extend offshore. The two main outfalls, 90- and 120-inches in diameter, extend approximately 1.5 miles offshore and discharge at a depth of approximately 200 feet below sea level. The other two outfalls, 60- and 72-inches in diameter, are used for additional capacity during heavy rain events and extend a shorter distance offshore and discharge at shallower depths. A schematic of the existing system with the proposed tunnel and structures is shown in Figure 2, and the proposed 18-ft diameter tunnel alignment is shown in Figure 3. Both existing tunnels and main outfalls are required to be in service at all times."

This paper discusses the subject of "Improving Contracting Methods" from the owners point of view, particularly the public. An overview is given of the work of the U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology and some apparent results of the implementation of these recommendations or lack thereof. Selected recommendations that are not being implemented are discussed as to the the desirability and the possible impact of their implementation. Impediments to acceptance of the recommendations are identified and solutions proposed. The difference in the flexibility, attitudes and approaches of owners, public, quasi-public and private, toward improving contracting methods are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the fact that the onus to improve is on the owner because they usually develop the contractual language or at least have the final decision on its content and are or should be an equal party to the contract during its administration.

By its nature, underground metal mining is unlike any other business in the industrial sector. Operations are continuously exposed to economic risk as a normal consequence of mining due to uncertainties associated with the? deposit, excavation, and ever changing political, regulatory, and market conditions. Out pacing advances in productivity and technology, these conditions have contributed to the steady decline of underground hardrock mining in the United States. This paper investigates the trends and major factors believed to be responsible for this decline. Special consideration is given to changes in direct operating costs, labor productivity, and production capacity.

A process was developed to recover coal, clays and pyrite from coal wastes. The process consists of fine grinding followed by coal flotation and pyrite flotation leaving the clays in the flotation pulp. A bituminous coal refuse, containing l0% S-30% C*, was treated by this method to yield a coal product containing 4% sulfur, 10% ash; a pyrite product containing 45% sulfur (84% FeS2), 1% carbonaceous material and a clay product containing 2% sulfur (3.5% FeS2). The coal yield was about 89%. The pyrite yield was about 77%. The process steps may be entirely flotation, or gravity separation (hydrocyclone) may be used to increase the pyrite: coal ratio in the flotation feed. Cost estimation shows a profit of $2.28 per ton of low pyrite grade refuse (Labor, maintenance, overhead and plant depreciation were not included). The development of this process consisted of three parts: 1) exploratory tests, 2) optimization tests and 3) confirmatory tests.

Methane has been a hazard since the beginning of coal mining and has influenced, more or less, every aspect of coal mine design. It is receiving increased attention lately because the rate of methane emission in coal mines is increasing as increasing demand for coal leads to exploitation of deeper seams and the use of higher productivity equipment. Consequently, the government and private industries have directed a great deal of effort towards understanding and solving the problem of methane emission in coal mines. In the United States, Consolidation Coal Company has pioneered research in this area since the early 1950's.1 Currently this work is being expanded by Consol through the Mining Research Division of the parent company, Continental Oil (Conoca), to find new techniques for degasification of virgin areas as well as control of methane in gob areas. Basic reservoir properties of coal seams, such as gas content, reservoir pres-sure, diffusivity, porosity and permeability are better understood today largely through the efforts of the U. S. Bureau of Minese2,3,4 It is possible now to identify and model the basic mechanism of gas emission from coal and to forecast steady as well as unsteady state emission of methane in coal mines with some degree of reliability. Combining this knowledge with any ventilation simulator should often identify problem areas in advance and permit adequate methane control measures to be planned.5 Another recent innovation in methane control is the horizontal hole drilling technology. The U. S. Bureau of 1-1ines and the Mining Research Division of Conoco have independently developed techniques for drilling horizontal holes 300 to 600 m deep6 The Bureau's method employs a rotary drill string while Conoco uses a non-rotating string with a down hole drill motor. It is the authors' view that the latter provides more positive control on bore hole deviation both vertically and laterally and appears to be faster, though somewhat more difficult to operate. This study presents the methodology and proposals for the restoration of an abandoned quarry in the Greek island of Milos. The local data (soil, vegetation etc.) of the island were collected, analysed and compiled into thematic maps using Geographical Information Systems. The restoration plan was based on the G.I.S. database and suggested the revegetation of the disturbed lands with herbaceous (grasses and legumes) or woody (shrubs and trees) plants. Plants should be indigenous or from other areas with the same vegetation type. Herbaceous plants establish and grow easily protecting the soil from surface erosion. The revegetation success depends on the seed quality, planting season and methods as well as local environmental conditions. Our proposals aim to restore the abandoned quarry with methods that follow the natural succession of vegetation, have minimal environmental impact, low cost and the expected result will be similar to the surrounding undisturbed land.

Mercury levels in Twin Creeks Vista pit ore (previously Chimney Creek, North pit ore) increased substantially since plant start-up in November 1987. Consequently, modifications were necessary to minimize industrial hygiene hazards and potential operational problems. The original plant design included mercury control measures. With progressive increases in mercury levels, the issue had to be re-addressed. Modifications to operational practice, industrial hygiene and management philosophy will be discussed. Additionally, a detailed examination of the mercury vapor suppression system currently employed at Twin Creeks will be presented.

The in-situ FTIR/IRS technique has been used to spectroscopically characterize interfacial water near a hydrophilic surface. Interfacial water was examined spectroscopically over known distances from the surface of a silicon single crystal by appropriate design of the geometry and optics of the internal reflection system. The in-situ FTIR/IRS spectra of interfacial water were examined by consideration of the 0 -H stretching region (3000 -3800 cm-1) associated with the vibrational spectra of water. The broad peak: in this region which describes the interfacial water structure was deconvoluted in order to isolate the overlapping spectral features of the interfacial water. Preliminary spectral results indicate the prevalence of an ice-like water structure (-3200 cm-!) at the silicon surface. Importantly, it appears that the interfacial water structure may extend a considerable distance (several tens of molecular layers) from the surface as established from the spectroscopic depth profile measurements which show that the free OH stretch at 3600 cm-1 becomes very significant at distances from the surface exceeding 400 nm.

Based on the geological conditions of the 15,600 working face in Pingba Mine, this paper establishes the mechanical model of the stress distribution in the pre-working face under the influence of mining pressure based on a hemispherical stress distribution theory. The analytical formula for the stress distribution is determined. A numerical model for the mining pressure under the influence of key layer is also constructed, and dynamic stress interruptions under various roof-cutting relief schemes in different horizontal positions are simulated. The stress distribution of the stope under different pressure relief schemes is analyzed and compared with the theoretical results. Results show that blasting roof cutting blocks the transmission of the abutment pressure to the working surface to the coal and rock mass in front of the working face, reducing the significant working face mining pressure influence range, which decreases as blasting pressure relief position moves toward the working face. Stress accumulation in the coal in front of the working face also increases as the blasting pressure relief position moves toward the working surface. Engineering practice results show that blasting cutting can effectively block the propagation of mining pressure, and the stress impact range is shortened by approximately 1/3.

New York State’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has undertaken the largest transportation project in New York City. The East Side Access Project (ESA) will introduce MTA’s Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) service to the East Side of Manhattan, to a new terminal located beneath the existing, landmark Grand Central Terminal(GCT). Construction of the Manhattan Segment of the project will affect overlying operating facilities of two other MTA entities, Metro-North Railroad (MNR) and New York City Transit (NYCT) and major Midtown Manhattan buildings. The paper describes the evolution of the GCT concept at Manhattan from a shallow alternative proposed by a Major Investment Study (MIS), that would require extensive underpinning of multi-story buildings and have considerable impact on MNR and NYCT operations, to a deep alternative with lesser risk and potential for disruption.
