"Field observations on replacements of 12-inch constant cross-section double disc cutters in Tuzla Wastewater Tunnel excavated by an EPB TBM with 3.151 mm excavation diameter excavating hard rock are summarized. Cutter life is correlated to rock’s uniaxial compressive strength and Cerchar abrasivity index, and TBM operational parameters. Number of cutter replacements, average cutter replacement rates and types of cutter damages are summarized. The relationships between cutter life and rock properties and TBM operational parameters are analyzed by single variable regression method. Detailed analysis between chainages 1+200 and 1+982 km indicates that average cutter consumption rate is 35.7 m3/replacement (4.6 m/replacement). Cerchar abrasivity index and uniaxial compressive strength does not indicate any meaningful relationship with cutter life. Penetration per revolution and field specific energy might be used for predicting lives of constant cross-section double disc cutters. However, additional data is required to generalize the findings of this study. INTRODUCTION Cutter life / replacement and/or consumption rates in terms of cutter cost and replacement time loses is one of the most important parameters affecting excavation performance of mechanical excavators, especially of TBMs used very widely and equipped with usually disc cutters. Predicting cutter cost is a very important task in especially feasibility stage of tunneling projects. Basic parameters affecting cutter life can be classified into 3 general groups as geological and geotechnical, excavation machine (TBM) related, and operational parameters (Bilgin et al., 2013). The geological and geotechnical parameters are the most dominant ones among them. The machine related parameters should be arranged in accordance with the expected geological and geotechnical conditions for the best TBM excavation performance and minimum cost."

Ice frozen from a dilute chemical solution is mechanically weaker than ice frozen from pure water. This phenomenon is the basis of a practical method for reducing the strength of a mass of frozen coal. If a chemical additive is applied to moist coal, prior to its shipment during freezing weather, the resulting frozen coal can be more easily broken than in the absence of the chemical additive. This greatly expedites the unloading and handling of coal during winter. There has been considerable research into the nature and mechanical strength of ice frozen from various solutions. The literature relating to this process has been reviewed as has the literature relating to the chemical treatment of coal and mineral particulates. Some important articles are discussed and speculations are made about the nature of the ice-weakening process. A laboratory evaluation of the effects of chemical additives on the mechanical strength of ice and frozen coal has been made. An apparatus designed for this purpose is described, and some results obtained with it are discussed.

Coal waste materials inhibit direct vegetation establishment due to adverse physical and chemical properties, particularly low water retention and high potential acidity. The Moss # I coal refuse pile is located in Dickenson County, Virginia, and was idled in the late 1980&apos;s with little topsoil resource available for final closure. The refuse was acidic (Total-S = .. 38%; pH = 3.6), black, high (70%) in coarse fragments, and had a low water holding capacity (4.5% in < 2.0 mm fraction). A small plot experiment was established on the refuse pile to evaluate the influence of liming rates (50% and 100% of lime req.) and topsoil thickness (15, 30 and 60 cm) on vegetative growth and leachate quality. Liming and topsoil amendment increased the surface soil pH from < 4.0 to > 6.0 over a two-year period, which resulted in greater vegetative cover and biomass than the control plots. All topsoil treatments resulted in greater vegetative cover and biomass than plots treated with lime only due to improved surface soil physical and chemical properties. A topsoil treatment of 60 cm gave the thickest vegetative cover and biomass yield. Such a treatment, however, would be cost-prohibitive at this location. Application of 27 Mg ha-1 of lime to the refuse surface along with 15 cm of topsoil produced acceptable two-year vegetative cover and biomass, and appeared to be the optimal treatment for this particular situation. Both liming and topsoil had no affect on leachate pH and the electrical conductivity in leachates collected below the plots. This suggests that surface revegetation will have little effect on the quality of water draining through the pile, so long term water treatment requirements may not be reduced by successfully revegetating the pile surface.

"Tunnel face instability is one of the most common issues in EPB tunneling. The evaluation of an ideal face support pressure is a critical element in the design and construction phases of EPB tunneling. In this study, measured tunnel face pressures in three EPB tunneling projects (University Link U230 and U220 projects and the Northgate Link Extension N125 Project) for Sound Transit in Seattle, WA are compared with the calculated analytical methods. This comparison shows that the analytical methods generally overestimate the required tunnel face support. The best practice for managing the face pressure in EPB tunneling operation is discussed based on the experience gained through these projects. Furthermore, the algorithm that is developed for identifying ground loss in these projects is addressed. INTRODUCTION Earth pressure balanced tunneling relies on using muck within the chamber to support the face. Muck is pressurized by controlling the advance rate of the tunnel boring machine and the speed of the screw conveyor. Target face pressure is typically calculated by using the geotechnical assumptions in the geotechnical baseline report. The concept behind EPB tunneling is that the application of sufficient face support pressure will prevent tunnel face instability and the resultant over excavation. Tunnel face instabilities caused by a lack of sufficient face support can lead to ground loss and surface settlement (Anagnostou & Kovári 1996, Kirsch 2010). A certain support pressure must be achieved to counteract water and earth pressure with an adequate factor of safety. While the water pressure can be predicted accurately, the determination of the resultant earth pressure on the face is less precise. This becomes manifested in the relatively high partial safety factors on the earth pressure."

After 30 years of success, Newmont Gold Company has temporarily ceased production from the original Carlin Pit. In late 1993, the Carlin East Decline was driven and an extensive underground exploration program was started. Today, Newmont Gold produces refractory ore from the Carlin East underground at the rate of 700 t/d (770 stpd) for an annual production of over 100,000 ounces. Over 70 underground miners enjoy the estimated 6-year mine life at Carlin East. About 70% of the ore at Carlin East is mined by mechanized longhole stoping with delayed cemented backfill. The remaining ore is mined by underhand drift and cemented fill methods.

The risk associated with mining induced seismicity and the related rock bursts has become one of the major threats to the safety and sustainability of mining at the Kiirunavaara mine. The causes of mining induced seismicity at the Kiirunavaara mine are very complex and have affected our understanding on the source mechanisms of seismicity and further the mitigation of the seismic risk. Detailed analysis of historical mining induced seismicity at the Kiirunavaara mine was conducted. The focus of this analysis was placed on the classification of large seismic events and the evaluation of the influential factors on the classified seismic events. 145 events with local magnitude larger than 1.5 that occurred between January 1, 2011 and March 31, 2021 were analyzed. For this analysis, seismic events located in the hanging wall were not included, as these have not been observed to cause large damages to the mine itself. It was found that the magnitude of the events had good correlation with the stress change in relation to the production location. The seismic events were classified as mining-front associated, ore-pass associated, mining-front and ore-pass associated and others, according to their hypocenter location. Most of the mining-front associated events, concentrated around the production levels and slightly above and below them, generally correlated with shear cracks, and most of them occurred when the ore flow between two production levels started. The numerical modelling showed that slip of the geological discontinuity, due to unclamping between hanging wall and footwall, could be the major causative mechanisms, which further supports this finding. The ore-pass associated events are located close to the ore passes. Large seismic events located between ore passes have the source mechanism of both fault-slip and non-shear, but events located at the outer side of ore passes were all fault-slip type. By checking with the ore pass scanning data, it was concluded that the most of the events located between ore passes could be pillar bursts. An elastic core concept has been then used to define a critical pillar width. The paper is not intended to be prescriptive but rather to initiate discussion of the possible classification of seismic events at the Kiirunavaara mine and to present new perspectives of the causes of the seismicity for improving the present seismic risk management.

This paper describes laboratory techniques and subsequent results of Bureau of Mines research to produce chlorination-grade feedstock from an abundant, low-grade, domestic, rock ilmenite ore. The research is part of the Bureau-effort to devise technology that may help decrease U.S. dependence on imported raw materials. A rock ilmenite containing about 46 wt pct Ti02 was smelted in an electric arc furnace with coke, woodchips, and Na2C03 to separate most of the iron as pig iron and to form a low-iron, titanium-enriched slag. The slag was ground, pelletized, oxidized, and then sulfated with mixtures of SO2 and air in a continuous 4.5- to 9.1- kg/h apparatus at 1023 to 1223 K. The sulfated slag, containing 60 to 65 pct TiO2, was reground and leached in water at ambient temperature to decrease the combined levels of the troublesome Ca, Mg, and Mn impurities from 7.0 to 1.7 wt pct. At levels of more than 3 wt pct, these impurities contribute to operating and disposal problems, The final product was upgraded to about 84 wt pct TiO2. This material potentially is suitable for chlorination in a fluidized-bed reactor. The most favorable results were achieved with leached slag sulfated at a feedrate of 4.5 kg/h and at temperatures of 1073 to 1123 K.

Investigations of bedrock within subsided areas over abandoned coal mines reveal) very little disturbance of the bedrock. In areas that have surface subsidence of .3 to 1 m (1.0 to 3.25 ft), examination of cores from exploration drilling and investigations of the boreholes by means of closed circuit television have shown that fractures are spaced at least .9 to 3.6 m (3 to 12 ft) apart and are located within a zone 6 to 15 m (20 to 50 ft) above the collapsed area in coal mines 42.6 to 112.7 m (140 to 370 ft) deep. The dip of the fractures ranges from 25 to 60 degrees, cutting across nearly horizontal sedimentary bedding planes. Typical core recovery is 80 to 95 percent within the subsided areas and 100 percent outside the subsided areas.

For many years The Hanna Mining Company has been investigating the flotation of the non-magnetic iron ores located in the Western Mesabi Range of Minnesota.1 During the 1950&apos;s a number of anionic iron procedures were evaluated and in the late 1950&apos;s and early 1960&apos;s the anionic silica floats and the cationic silica floats were tested with improved results.2 The cationic float became more attractive and effective by the use of the improved ether amines. About 1962 a desliming process by selective flocculation was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Hines at Minneapolis&apos;, Minnesota.3, 4, 5 This is a very efficient method of desliming and was first tried with the anionic silica float and then the more practical cationic silica float. In the mid 1960&apos;s The Hanna Research Laboratory began studies to optimize the selective flocculation process for our ores. This was followed by studies to optimize the cationic silica float after desliming by selective flocculation. This testwork was done on large, 500 to 1000 tonne bulk samples of oxidized taconite which were later successfully piloted at .68t/h (1500 Lbs. /hr.). A program was then begun to test the oxidized portions of numerous taconite drill holes to outline the ore bodies and develop mining plans. This paper will discuss our optimization results of both the selective flocculation and the cationic silica float as applied to our various ores. In addition the pilot plant studies and drill core testwork will be discussed.

Refractory gold concentrates often contain submicroscopic gold that is encapsulated within the crystal matrix of iron sulfide minerals, such as pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite. To recover the gold, the host mineral must generally be broken down chemically by oxidative processes, such as roasting, pressure oxidation or bacterial leaching, which expose the gold for subsequent recovery by leaching in cyanide solution. The focus of attention in these pretreatment processes is usually the oxidation of the sulfides to elemental sulfur, sulfur dioxide gas or sulfate ions. Less attention is paid to the deportment of iron and the changes in its oxidation state, although this can have a profound effect on gold and silver liberation, as well as downstream operating costs. Iron sulfide minerals break down completely during pressure oxidation, and dissolve in the sulfuric acid solution that is gener-ated from oxidation of the sulfides. This dissolution liberates the tiny gold particles that were originally trapped in the sulfide crystals, and gold recovery during subsequent cyanidation is usually very high (>95%). Iron goes into solution in the oxidation process, initially as ferrous sulfate, but this compound is rapidly oxidized to ferric sulfate, which then hydrolyzes and reprecipitates. The form of the precipitate varies depending on the operating conditions in the autoclave and the presence of certain metal cations. When the acidity in the autoclave is quite low (<20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is high (>200°C), the formation of hematite is favored. When the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is relatively low (160 to 200°C), the formation of basic iron sulfate is favored. If the ore or the leach solution contains significant levels of certain cations (such as Na+, K+, NH4+, Ag+ or Pb2+) and the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4), jarosite compounds are favored. Hematite is the desired iron product in the autoclave discharge, for both metallurgical and environmental reasons, but it is difficult to operate an autoclave under the conditions required for effective liberation of gold without converting some of the iron to basic iron sulfate and/or jarosite. These compounds fall into a category of iron compounds known generically as iron hydroxy sulfates, all of which can cause significant processing and environmental problems in the downstream gold process. This paper deals specifically with basic iron sulfate: the conditions under which it is formed in an autoclave, the problems that are caused by its presence in the feed to a cyanidation plant and possible remedial strategies that can be adopted, both in the autoclave and downstream.

Shaft alignment requirements are consistently met using conventional shaft sinking methods. Little attention has been given to achieving similar alignment accuracies using rotary drilled shaft methods. Alignment of these shafts is difficult to control and guarantee. Bare shafts and shafts that use drum hoisting systems can accept some deviation. However, combining drilled shafts with Koepe hoist installations presents new accuracy requirements for drilled shafts. This paper describes the importance of verticality with practical examples, and discusses various methods of measuring verticality and their respective limitations.

This paper addresses a process by which both the disposal and utilization of preparation plant coal refuse can be simultaneously accomplished with an attendant benefit of significantly increasing the percentage of extractable coal. A laboratory study is described in which coal refuse was successfully utilized as an aggregate in low cost concrete (coal-crete) mixes under simulated mine environments. Coal-crete specimens with compressive strengths of 14,000 kPa (2,000 psi) were consistently produced. A construction sequence and mining plans are offered for placing the low-cost coal-crete pillars in accessible areas in room-and-pillar mines so that a Substantial portion of the remaining coal pillars could be extracted. The method could be applicable in areas where mining procedures do not permit pillar extraction because of possible surface subsidence, roof problems, or other conditions. Possible structural difficulties with the coal-crete pillar support system are discussed. Using a discounted cash flow analysis, the economic feasibility of mining with the coal-crete pillar system is investigated. The cost of the coal-crete pillar system is compared to the cost of a mining system which would have less coal recovery. The analysis indicates that although at higher coal selling prices the coal-crete mining system may yield an acceptable rate of return, the alternative of leaving the coal pillars is more attractive at the present time.

The flotation behavior of two high sulfur coals using a non-ionic surfactant as collector from two series of compounds containing oxygenated functional groups was studied in detail using a 2-liter Denver flotation cell. The performance of these reagents was compared with that of an oily collector, namely dodecane. The results showed that at the same coal recovery, a much lower dosage of these non-ionic surfactants was required as compared with that of dodecane. More import was the performance of these compounds as promoters for oxidized as well as un oxidized coal. Mechanisms of interaction of these compounds with the coal are suggested.

Dynamic permeability is a significant hydrologic condition associated with in-situ leaching at the Cyprus Casa Grande operations. Several factors contribute to changes in the permeability conditions. They are: 1) hydraulically induced fracture development, 2) geochemical changes during leaching in the rock matrix, and 3) changes in the relative degree of saturation of the deposit. Dynamic permeability conditions were evaluated using available pressure and flow rates from the 58 injection and recovery wells obtained over one year period. A finite element, 2-D hydrologic model called INVERT which is designed to estimate aquifer parameters under transient and steady state flow conditions was used for the investigation. The permeability conditions during 7 different steady state intervals throughout the one year time frame were determined. The results confirm that big changes in permeability occur as a function of time as well as a function of injection pressure condition.

8.1 INTRODUCTION Under room and pillar mining if the extraction ratio is low, (i.e., < 50%) a pillar can support the overburden without collapse and there will be no surface subsidence whatsoever. In other words, if the pillar sizes are properly determined to support the overburden weight, the roof strata cannot cave and there will be no surface subsidence, provided the entry width is small and properly reinforced so that a continuous roof fall leading to piping or the total collapse of the roof does not occur. Under the prevailing mining conditions in the US if only development mining is em¬ployed in room and pillar mining (i.e., no pillar extraction), the extraction ratio is usually less than 50% and generally no surface subsidence will occur. If pillar mining is employed, surface subsidence may occur, depending on the extraction ratio and the size of the remnant pillars (or stumps) left in the gob. The higher the extraction ratio, the smaller the stump pillars left behind in the gob. As the size of the stump pillars becomes smaller, the possibility of their support¬ing the roof without collapse is smaller. If all stumps are crushed completely, the roof will collapse and surface subsidence will occur. Again, whether surface subsidence occurs, it depends on whether the remaining stumps can support the overburden or not. Therefore, since the weight of the overburden which the stump pillars have to support is proportional to the mining depth, a fixed¬size stump pillar can support the overburden at a shallow depth, but will collapse under greater depths. In this context extraction ratio is not the only parameter for determining whether surface subsidence will occur. Furthermore, during pillar mining a pillar can be cut away in many ways to finally reach the same extraction ratio. Therefore, the safest way to determine whether or not sur¬face subsidence will occur in room and pillar mining is to compare the strength of all stump pillars in the panel of interest with the weight of the overburden that the pillars have to support. If they are too small to support the overburden, surface subsidence will occur. Under normal mining practices the characteristics of surface subsidence profiles vary with methods of mining. In the US there are two types of coal mining methods, i.e., longwall and room and pillar mining. Longwall mining is indisputably a total extraction method, but different percentages of coal recovery are achieved in room and pillar mining. Recovery is much higher for sections with pillar extraction than those without pillar extraction. For those without pillar extraction, coal recovery increases with increasing entry width or decreasing pillar size. For those with pillar extrac¬tion, the total coal recovery depends on the amount of coal ex¬tracted from each pillar which is in turn dependent on the roof conditions and methods of pillar extraction. Bauer and Hunt (1981) analyzed the characteristics of the subsidence profiles due to the three types of mining methods in Illinois. Fig. 8.1 shows the range of locations associated with the following profile features: profile edge, maximum tensile curvature, maximum slope, maxi¬mum compressive curvature, and maximum subsidence. The scat¬ter of the data increases with decreasing percentages of extraction. The profile is much sharper for longwall mining and becomes milder as percentage of extraction decreases; for longwall mining the profile edge is always beyond the opening, while in room and pillar mining it may fall within. The location of maximum tensile strain moves outward, while that of the maximum compressive strain moves inward as the percentage of extraction decreases and the maximum subsidence decreases with decreasing extraction ra¬tio. The general concepts discussed in this chapter may not apply to the entry development sections between two longwall panels where roof caving in both panels are very severe and overlap each other. Consequently, it must be treated differently. 8.2 CASE STUDIES Kohli et al. (1982) described several case studies on surface subsidence due to room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. In one case, the seam was 6 ft thick and ranged from 650 to 800 ft deep. The panel was 720 ft wide (Fig. 8.2) and was developed with seven entries. Each entry was 18 ft wide and the pillars were driven at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Dur¬ing retreating, two additional pillars (pillars J and K) were devel¬oped, two blocks ahead of the pillar line, to take the barrier pillar, 160 ft wide, between panel No. I and No. 2. Pillar extraction began by taking a central slice across the whole panel, beginning from pillar 0 through J. After that, each pillar was sliced by 6 wing-slices, 3 on each side, leaving 4 stumps, 2 on each side. One of each pair was triangular shaped approximately 6 ft wide by 26 ft long. The other was trapezoidal, 26 ft long by 16 ft and 10 ft wide at the upper and lower bases, respectively. This resulted in a total extraction ratio of 85% within the panel. Obviously the stump pillars were not large enough to support the overburden and col¬lapsed completely. The final subsidence profiles were rather smooth, just like those under total extraction (Fig. 8.3). The max¬imum subsidence on Lines A and B was about 3 ft for an average mining height of 6 ft, but the locations of the maximum subsidence were skewed toward panel No. 1. Along Line D, the central por¬tion was flat-bottomed, but the maximum subsidence was only 2 ft, mainly because Line D was only two blocks from the right-side edge. Notice in every profile there was heaving of as much as 0.3 ft, beyond the edges above the solid coal. In another case (Fig. 8.4), the seam was 6 ft thick under 650 to 850 ft cover. Three panels, 710, 400, and 350 ft wide, respec¬tively, were extracted side by side. The entries were 18 ft wide and the pillars at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Pillar extraction was practiced the same way as described previ¬ously. According to the mine maps, there was no barrier pillar left between the adjacent panels. Thus after extraction the three panels formed a common gob of more than 1460 ft wide. This was re¬flected in the development of the subsidence profile along the county road. After Panel No. I was mined, the maximum subsi¬dence of 1.2 ft occurred at Monument No. 1. This was increased to 1.6 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 2 and went to a further 1.8 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 3. The final maximum subsidence of 4.3 ft occurred at Monuments No. 6 through No. 8, while the remaining portion of the county road showed rebound. However it must be noted that the subsidence profiles were rather bumpy and fluctuated, perhaps an indication of the irregular stump pillars that were left and crushed at various time after mining. Fire accident is one of the most classic safety concerns in underground mines both in the USA and abroad. It may occur from pool fires due to leakages in hose or pipes, vehicle fires, or fires in tires and conveyor belts in the underground mines. It may also result from the storage of flammable materials such as gasoline, diesel, and explosives in the underground. When fire occurs in an underground mine, it releases heat, smoke, and other toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, and methane to the surrounding thereby making life unbearable to the miners. Furthermore, smoke greatly impact visibility in the underground which makes evacuation even more onerous and challenging. To this end, a thorough investigation of fire behavior and spread of toxic gases in a practical underground mine is imperative to develop a reliable emergency evacuation plan in an event of fire disaster in the underground mine. The objective of this study is to investigate temperature variation and CO spread along mine airways by conducting full-scale fire experiment in the underground mine. The results presented from this study are crucial to developing evacuation plans in underground mines. In addition, the findings from this study could be used to validate existing evacuation models.

The Lithium Corporation of America&apos;s Hallman-Beam spodumene-pegmatite open pit mine is located in the Kings Mountain area of North Carolina. Figure 1. Presently this area of North Carolina is the lithium center of the U.S., if not of the whole world. The Lithium Corporation mine was started in 1968 and now covers 61,000m2 (15 acres) with projected are reserves in excess of 20 years. Lithium occurs at the Hallman-Beam property in a mineral known as spodumene (LiAlSi2O6), a lithium aluminum silicate. The run-of-mine are averages 1.43 Li2O. Figure 2 of the general Mining Division flow sheet follows the concentration of the Li2O to 5.5% and also lists the various by-products that are sold commercially. The unique properties of lithium have led to many commercial applications, some of these including lubricating greases, ceramics, glasses, glazes, welding fluxes, aluminum reduction cells, dehumidifying and air-conditioning equipment, sanitizers, polymerization catalysts, batteries, and pharmaceuticals. A study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of large wheel loaders (Caterpillar 994 Class) for use as primary loading equipment in open pit iron-ore operations. Field visits were made to taconite and gold mines that used large wheel loaders. Information was gathered on loader selection rationale; operation and maintenance experience; and production, availability and costs. Brief time studies were conducted to indicate machine performance and utilization. This paper summarizes the field data that was collected including an economic comparison of wheel loaders and cable shovels in an iron-ore application.

The highly competitive nature of the international iron ore market has forced producers to improve the quality of their pellets. The demand for low acid pellets suitable for direct reduction has resulted in an increase in the number of plants utilizing reverse froth flotation for silica reduction. Column flotation is being favoured for this service due to the low capital and operating cost of the equipment, as well as improved metallurgical performance when compared to conventional flotation cells. The Federal Bureau of Mines examined tailings samples from 13 western copper operations to determine the potential for recovering rutile. Results showed that six of the samples contained sufficient liberated titania to be considered potential sources. One sample contained 0.75 percent Ti02 or 0.40 percent liberated rutile. Batch flotation studies developed a procedure that recovered 70 percent of the liberated rutile at a grade of 34.7 percent TiO2. Sulfuric acid leaching studies on 12 of the samples dissolved 100 to 2,200 grams Cu per ton of tailings; leaching of the slimes showed slightly more copper was dissolved, 1,800 to 3,300 grams Cu per ton of minus lo-micrometer material. Bulk sulfide flotation of nine of the samples resulted in concentrates that contained 0.38 to 2.0 percent Cu and 0.7 to 2.1 and 6.9 to 42.9 grams per ton Au and Ag, respectively.
