The bed filtration of colloidal particles has been modeled by performing a differential particle balance. The balance considered the localized particle deposition rate to be the sum of three rate resistances: 1) mass transfer to a region near the surface; 2) adhesion onto a partially filled surface; and 3) resuspension from a partially filled surface. The differential particle balance equations, one for the free particles and one for the adhered particles, were solved by a finite difference algorithm. The results of this model are compared to experimental filter breakthrough curves.

Introduction Grinding is the reduction of ore and similar raw materials to particle sizes below the practical limits of commercial crushing ma¬chines. This size is about 36 in. (1 cm), in most cases, although some finer crushing machines are in regular use. The feed size to grinding machines may range upward to S in. in rod mills, and 12 in. or more in autogenous mills. The finest particle sizes produced in mineral processing operations result from grinding. Ordinary grinding of brittle materials is the result of impacting, rolling, and abrasion of heavy bodies, moving freely under the influ¬ence of gravity. These falling and rolling grinding bodies, which are usually of metal, must be much heavier and larger than the ore parti¬cles they break. This weight relationship is usually in excess of 100: 1. The sustained fall of the grinding bodies is obtained by placing them, together with the rock particles they grind, in a rotating drum or cylinder with horizontal axis, called a tumbling mill. The mill is nearly half full of grinding bodies and ore particles, which may be fed into one end and exit from the other through hollow trunnions which usually serve as the mill bearings. The mill lining must be thick to absorb wear and rough to prevent excessive slippage of the charge. The breakage of brittle rock or ore is accomplished by compression. The compression may be a rapid impact, from the fall and roll of a grinding ball, or it may result from the relatively slow and constrained motion as in a jaw crusher. Breakage by shear is a secondary result of the compressive motion. Ordinary rock has an extremely heterogenous structure with innumerable zones of weakness in which cracks, fractures, and breakages can form. When a rock is subjected to com¬pression it deforms. If the compressive force exceeds a certain critical value an incipient crack appears in the most fragile zones of weakness. This crack tip may first form on the particle surface or in its interior. When the first crack tip forms the compressive stresses immediately surrounding it flow to it, and this concentration of forces extends the crack and splits the rock. Other adjacent cracks may form during this extremely rapid process. Because of the nature of brittle particles, the work done in breaking them consists essentially of the work input required to compress them to the point at which the first crack tip forms. Breakage requires no appreciable additional energy input be¬yond that required for the deformation, since the stress energy already imported to the rock flows to the crack tip and extends it to breakage. Types of Tumbling Mills The general term tumbling mill includes the rod mill, ball mill, pebble mill, autogenous mill, and tube mill. It is of cylindrical or cylindro-conical shape and rotates about its horizontal axis. Rotational speed, liner type, and size and shape of tumbling media are selected to provide the desired operating conditions for the specific grinding application. Introduction Compania de Carbones de Chile (Cocar SA) has brought into production Chile's first large-scale, open-pit coal mine, located in the Magellan Province. The US $65 million project includes a 1.1-Mt/a (1.2-million stpy) subbituminous steam coal mine and a mechanized bulk loading marine terminal with water depth sufficient to receive 60 kt (66,000 st) Panamax vessels. The loading terminal will be one of the largest in Chile. The Pecket coal project is expected to save Chile about $40 million in energy production costs and a further $100 million in oil imports, or about 25% of the country's oil import costs. Pecket coal will generate electricity for Codelco and will also supply general electricity needs for northern Chile. The Pecket coalfield is located on the Brunswick Peninsula, about 30 km (19 miles) northeast of Punta Arenas, the provincial capital, as shown in Fig. 1. Pecket is part of a large, coal-bearing basin. It extends from Punta Arenas 250 km (155 miles) north to Puerto Natales and across the border into the Rio Turbio coalfield in Argentina. A fleet of large and small O&K hydraulic shovels and backhoes is used to dig and load overburden and coal into mining trucks while O&K graders maintain the haul roads in and around the pit. In the spring of 1959 while visiting the offices of the US Geological Survey (USGS) in the Denver Federal Center, I had a chance encounter with Paul Theobold, a former but, at that time, casual associate. Paul mentioned to me the results of his work on stream sediment geochemistry (Theobold and Thompson, 1959). Using panned concentrates, Theobold and Thompson had discovered a tungsten anomaly in Clear Creek and followed it upstream to its source on Woods Creek, a small tributary to the West Fork of Clear Creek. The specific source was a debris cone about 0.8 km (0.5 mile) upstream from the mine yard at the Urad molybdenite deposit. Because of the genetic and zonal association of tungsten and molybdenum at Climax, I found this very interesting. Accordingly, I related this information to Robert Henderson, general manager of western operations for Climax, and asked his permission to do some follow-up work. He, in turn, telephoned Frank Coolbaugh, the president of Amax, telling him of my interest and saying that, "Climax would take care of it." On my first visit to Urad, my companions (Dave Jonson, Bruce MacKenzie, and Dick Baker) and I were confronted by a "Cousin Jack" caretaker who made up for his diminutive stature by a "pistolover" that hung down almost to his knee and by a watchdog that was one-half wolf and one-half mean sled dog. We retreated discretely to Clear Creek and then climbed up the "back" side of Red Mountain by separate routes, across the ridge crest, and part of the way down the "front" side, sampling as we went. Although much of the ground was covered with snow, we found lots of puzzling but friendly looking rocks and the geochemical results were interesting. Incident investigation is of utmost importance in most high-risk industries. This study was undertaken to study the content of past investigation reports to determine the effectiveness of the incident investigations. The study uses a semi-quantitative method to assess the effectiveness of incident investigations in the Ghanaian mining industry by evaluating the quality of past investigation reports. The assessment tool consists of 5 elements with several indicators and rating scales for assessing the quality of an investigation report as a measure of the effectiveness of the investigation. The method was applied to 304 investigation reports of 3 Ghanaian large-scale gold mines, and the results correlated with incidence rates of the mines to determine if any relationship existed. The results showed that the mines differ significantly in the quality of their investigation reports, suggesting differences in the effectiveness of their investigations. In addition, the incidence rates of the mines negatively correlated with some elements of the assessment tool. In general, the method was found useful and revealed areas where improvement is needed. INTRODUCTION The importance of learning from incidents is well documented in the literature. For instance, some scholars regard learning from incidents as important for improving safety [1,2]. Thus, many organisations spend considerable resources in identifying lessons from incidents and subsequently on the process of improvement that follows the identification of lessons. It is therefore important for such organisations to determine the effectiveness of their learning from incidents processes, in order to identify specific areas where improvements are needed, so that interventions can be as specific as possible. The learning from incidents process models the plan-act-check-do approach of management systems, often consisting of four major stages, namely; data collection and incident analysis, planning interventions, implementing interventions and follow-ups and evaluation [3,2]. The investigating and analysis of incidents have been regarded as one of the vital stages of the learning process since it is the stage where lessons are identified [3,2,4]. It has also been noted elsewhere in the literature that results of the previous stage of the learning process are important for the next stage [3]. For example, ineffective incident analyses could result in the planning of ineffective remedial measures. One of the primary aims of incident investigations is to identify lessons from previous incidents which when implemented can prevent future recurrences or minimise the effects of future incidents. There is thus the need for organisations to assess the quality of their investigations periodically since it is one of the means they adopt to improve safety and the quality of remedial measures to some extent depends on the effectiveness of the investigations. Although previous studies [5,2] have assessed the effectiveness of the learning process, and some aspects of the learning process, such as incidents reporting, there is less focus on the effectiveness of incident investigations. The research described in this paper was therefore conducted to contribute to this gap, focusing more closely on incident investigation reports.

"Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), or drones, capable of collecting and retrieving water samples from pit lakes, tailings ponds and other mine water basins will revolutionize environmental programs by lowering sampling costs and reducing safety related risks. Costs typically include a boat and associated equipment, boat transportation, road maintenance, water safety devices, water safety training, and additional staff. Typically, the total cost can exceed $20,000 USD per sampling event (excluding lab analyses). Hazards include potential for drowning, unstable pit walls, and unconsolidated sediment surrounding tailings ponds. Hatch has developed a novel device for aerial drones which currently enables the collection of water samples from depths up to 390 ft (119 m). This system only requires a pilot, a sample technician, and a safe operations point overlooking the water body. Hatch anticipates this will reduce monitoring cost by at least 50% while improving safety, reducing staffing requirements and accelerating data acquisition. This manuscript demonstrates profiling and sample collection from a 95 ft (29 m) deep reservoir and a 377 ft (115 m) deep pit lake, and highlights the potential of this emerging technology. INTRODUCTION Working on or near water at active, closed, or abandoned mine sites is inherently dangerous. Between 1996 and 1999, the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reported 17 fatalities involving drowning at US metal, non-metal, and coal mines (MSHA, 2000). Open pit mines which fill with water following mine closure, called pit lakes, present numerous risks to environmental monitoring teams including drowning, hypothermia, falls to the ground from the top of high walls, and rock avalanches resulting from steep, unstable pit walls. Some pit lakes are simply not easily accessible for ongoing monitoring. However, the routine collection of water samples from the entire water column on at least an annual basis is required to monitor the evolution of water quality over time, to verify the accuracy of numerical predictions, and to manage lake water chemistry in order to produce “treatable” influent to water treatment plants, and ultimately, produce acceptable site discharge water quality. As a product of these risks and the need for water sample, mining companies spend considerable expense on pit lake safety as part of monitoring. This includes training personnel for “on water” duties and hazards, purchasing or hiring specialized equipment and personnel (such as boats, boat operators, personal floatation devices, and mustang suits), stabilizing pit walls and maintaining safe access roads to the lake surface, employing spotters with direct communication to emergency medical services to watch sampling activities (because cell phones and radio signals can be blocked by pit walls), and utilizing redundancy to prepare for unexpected incidents and accidents. For example, one Canadian mining company requires pit lake water samplers to hold Marine Emergency Duties (MED) training to ensure the entire boat crew is sufficient and competent for the safe operation of the vessel, and uses three boats for water sampling: two on the water at all times, and one on the shoreline, ready to deploy. The costs of these safety mechanisms greatly adds to the overall expense associated with pit lake sampling. Consequently, environmental programs may need to reduce the frequency of pit lake sampling in order to keep monitoring programs within an acceptable budget"

At the Kakogawa works of Kobe Steel. Ltd., the agglomeration facilities are composed of a pelletizing plant and sintering plant. This aim is to utilize raw materials efficiently and stabilize the raw material resources. Therefore at Kakogawa works, the blast furnaces (BF) have been operated with high pellet ratio and various developments for pellet properties have been achieved to improve the blast furnace performance. These developments include dolomite-fluxed pellets, new-porous pellets and crushed pellets. As a results of these improvements, pellets have achieved almost the same performance as sinter at high temperature regarding properties such as the softening, melting and reduction behaviour. However, some problems on shape have remained to be solved. Spherical pellets flow easily into the center of the furnace and form mixed layers of pellets and cokes. Therefore, in BF operations with these pellets it becomes more difficult to keep proper and stable gas distribution.

The minerals industry trend toward very flotation machines, exceeding 10 m3, began in the late 1960's and responds to the continuing desire to achieve better plant economics through improved plant floor-space utilization, power requirements, and operational /maintenance manpower heeds. In general, as process design tonnage increases, the benefits of the larger flotation machine becomes more evident. The development of the larger flotation machine can be distingushed from earlier, smaller, machines in demanding a rational "scale-up" procedure to guide the basic design, thereby producing a machine prototype capable of satisfactory-operational evaluation at minimum cost. Proven flotation machine "hydrodynamic" scale-up consideration, successfully applied in the development of both the WEMCO No. 164 (28.3 m3) and No. 190 (42.5 m3) machine will be reviewed, and the resulting economic benefits of large flotation machines in high tonnage applications will be summarized.

The Ortiz Mine is operated by Gold Fields Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of Consolidated Gold Fields Ltd., one of the world's major gold producers. The Ortiz Mine is Gold Fields only heap leaching facility as well as being their first operating mine in the U.S.A. The hydrometallurgical processes utilized for recovery of gold and silver at Ortiz are discussed along with the several practical changes in operation adopted since start-up. Included are heap leaching by cyanidation, concentration of values on activated carbon, desorption, and the final electrowinning steps prior to shipment. Construction costs and pertinent technical data are shown.

This report covers laboratory experiments simulating in situ copper recovery from primary sulfide ores in sulfuric acid systems pressurized with oxygen. Copper extraction and acid consumption data are correlated with temperature in the range 50-150°C and quenched pH in the range 0.25-2. Adverse changes in the chemical composition of the leach solution and the formation of gangue-mineral alteration products and secondary sulfides can severely limit the extraction of copper above 90°C. Keeping the pH below the self-buffered value of about 2 and the temperature below about 110°C produces the maximum extraction rates. Forcing the pH too low not only results in excessively high acid consumption but may also limit the extraction of copper at temperatures above 100°C.

Linear goal programming is a multi-objective optimization technique where the constraints of a linear programming formulation of a problem are considered as additional objectives. The optimal solution is the one that comes closest to satisfying all the objectives. An interactive computer program was written to utilize this technique in solving the feed blending problem faced by power plants de- pendent on multiple sources of coal supply. This program determines the amount of coal from each supplier to utilize in the blend. Examples of the use of the program in both long and short term coal procurement planning scenarios are given.

The following report details the successful construction of Contract 2A of the Three Rivers Water Quality Management Program, Intrenchment Creek Combined Sewer Overflow Conveyance System, in DeKalb County for the City of Atlanta, Georgia. The contract required construction of approximately 2878 m (9443 ft) of tunnel bored to an initial diameter of 7.95 m (26 ft 1 in), with provisions to concrete line those portions designated by the engineer to a finished internal diameter of 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in). Flanking the tunnel are two shafts. The upstream shaft was excavated to a nominal diameter of 4.87 m (16 ft) to accommodate a finished internal diameter of 3.66 m (12 ft). This shaft required a transition boot fully concrete lined to final dimensions of 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in) wide, 13.72 m (45 ft) long, and varying in height from 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in) to 12.80 m (42 ft). Associated work necessary to complete the contractual obligations included installation of 22.86 m (75 ft) of cut-and-cover box culvert, 484 m (1589 ft) of open-cut sewer installation in sizes ranging from 0.30 m (12 in) to 1.68 m (5 ft 6 in), one river crossing, 137.46 m (451 ft) of monolithic concrete trapezoidal channel, and installation of 19125 cu m (25000 cu yd) of select fill material compacted and graded to finished contours. The downstream shaft was excavated to a minimum diameter of 12.04 m (39 ft 6 in) and concrete lined to a finished internal diameter of 10.67 m (35 ft). Requirements here included installation of a complete pumping station with all mechanical, electrical, and structural elements necessary for dewatering the tunnel through the controlled use of four 250 hp submersible pumps discharging into the facilities of the Intrenchment Creek Water Pollution Plant. This study elucidates a new idea to predict mine fire levels by employing several machine learning techniques. A total of 120 patterns of various mine fire influencing parameters, such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and temperature, were compiled from the Adularya coal mine in Turkey. Techniques like t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) and k-means clustering were used to process the data, and support vector classification (SVC) was executed to predict various levels of the mine fire. The results revealed that the proposed model has higher credibility to predict the various levels of underground mine fires.

During wet grinding the electrochemical interactions between grinding media and pyrrhotite not only accelerate the media wear but also adversely affect the flotation response of the sulfide mineral. A possibility of remedying the adverse effect on its floatability by applying electric potentials to grinding media was examined. Flotation tests, Auger electron spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to study the surface properties of pyrrhotite. Although anodic polarization of the steels increased the metal loss by corrosion, the flotation recovery of pyrrhotite was increased. In the case of cathodic polarization, the flotation recovery improved in a narrow range of overpotentials. At higher cathodic overpotentials, however, the floatability of the mineral was progressively lowered although the corrosive wear of grinding media might be reduced.

The term shortwall mining is somewhat of a mis¬nomer. It may infer a longwall mining system, but of much shorter face length. Actually, continuous pillar mining is a more descriptive term. Coal is mined using a continuous miner as would be done in pillar extrac¬tion, but with the addition of roof supports to control the caving. Face length on such a system typically is 46 to 61 m (150 to 200 ft). The coal is cut in front of the roof supports in the same direction as with a long¬wall shearing machine or plow, but it is mined with a continuous miner and shuttle cars of the same type as used in continuous mining. ROOF SUPPORTS Roof supports for shortwall mining must be con¬siderably larger than those used for longwall mining because of the additional roof to be supported by the wider 2.6- to 3.4-m (81/2- to 11-ft) cut of the continuous miner. Capacities of shortwall chocks in current use vary from about 454 to 726 t (500 to 800 st). The higher capacity as compared to longwall roof supports is needed primarily because of (1) the greater support length, hence more roof weight, and (2) the presence of draw slate in the eastern coal seams, where shortwall is being used. The most popular shortwall support currently used is the four-leg 590 t (650 st) model. This support is shown in Fig. 1. The price of this support is approxi¬mately $25,000 each. As shown in Fig. 1, the shortwall chock incorporates an unusually long forward bar that has an additional hydraulically operated extension bar to provide face support for the wide miner cut. METHOD OF OPERATION Mining Sequence In shortwall mining, two or three (depending upon the chock design) move up cycles of the chock are needed because of the miner cut width. I have spent my entire life in the mining industry pursuing what I believed was an honorable profession that provided products that were critical for our social and economic well being. Now I am told that all of my efforts been for nothing and that I have been doing something morally wrong - mining. This view of the future is not one that the mining industry has to allow to unfold. A determining factor in how things will turn out is continued improvement of the industry's environmental performance. To some extent, the current state of affairs in the United States is a result of the common perception that greedy corporations (usually foreign) are somehow ripping off US citizens of their native birthright or natural treasures in the name of corporate profits. Implicit in this view is the belief that corporations will take shortcuts or violate the environment in the name of profits. I have 26 years of experience in working in the copper, uranium and gold industries. Profits during those years were meager and difficult to find (Fig. 1). In fact, when I began working fresh out of college, I chose copper, which was then selling at around $1/lb. By the time I left copper mining, it was selling for 45 cents/lb. I then moved to uranium, which was selling for $52/lb. By the time I left it was $16/lb. I finally picked gold, which was then at ($650/oz). There is a whole generation of engineers, geologists and professionals who have spent two decades downsizing, closing mines, improving costs and getting smarter about how the mining industry does what it does. The environment, health and safety are areas where there have been great improvement. There are five characteristics of corporate governance that are critical for a company to develop and an industry to embrace if environmental, health and safety excellence is to reach new heights in the labor pool.

"1.INTRODUCTIONThis paper is based on the Lee Tunnel project, which is part of the Thames Water’s Tideway Project.The client Thames Water has employed a Joint Venture of Morgan Sindall/Vinci Grand Projets and Bachy Soletanche to undertake the design and construction of the project under the management of CH2M Hill at a value in excess of £635 million ($990 million). The 3 main elements of the tunnel project are the permanent lining to the shafts, the precast segmental lining, and the secondary tunnel lining. All 3 are reinforced with different types of Dramix steel wire fibers and each element will be described in this paper. This paper will explain the basic structural design of FRC (Fiber reinforced concrete) based on the post cracking residual strength and will describe all the steps of this project, the testing program realized to support innovative design and the main technical learning point. 2.BASIC CONCEPT OF STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF FRCStructural design of FRC elements is based on the post-cracking residual strength provided by fiberreinforcement. Other cases, like early age crack-control or fire resistance, are considered non-structural use of FRC. For structural use, a minimum mechanical performance of FRC must be guaranteed. Fibers can be used to improve the behavior at SLS (Service Limit State) since they can reduce crack spacing and crack width, thereby improving durability and they can be used to improve the behavior at ULS (Ultimate Limit State) where they can partially or totally substitute conventional reinforcement in most conditions. In the design process, the definition of the performance expected from the material is a key factor and the mix-design of the material has to be optimized for the required structural performance.2.1 Testing Method In order to ascertain the structural requirements requested for the FRC segments, preliminary testing on samples will be required and the effectiveness of the proposed solution will also be assured by the testing of full scale specimens. Structural design of FRC elements is based on the post-cracking residual strength provided by fiber reinforcement. For structural use, a minimum mechanical performance of FRC must be guaranteed. Nominal values of the material properties can be determined by performing a 3-point bending test on a notched beam according to EN14651 (figure 1) or by performing the ASTM C1609 beam test:"

"During his presentation at the 2016 George A. Fox Conference about the history of public-private-partnerships (PPP) in the tunneling and underground construction industries in New York, Vincent Tirolo, Jr., told a story about how, as a young engineer in the late 1960s, he and others pooled money to purchase a calculator for $75 that had the ability to perform sine and cosine functions. That was a big deal in those days and would make their job much easier. Oh how far things have come. Tunnel and underground construction engineers can now virtually map out and plan entire projects before the first shovel ever breaks ground. And the machines that are used to build the tunnels have advanced in ways that could not have been imagined 50 years ago.The calculator is just one example of innovation in the industry and on Jan. 26, more than 400 industry professionals attended the George A. Fox Conference at the Graduate Center of New York (CUNY) to learn more about the next innovations, new tunneling technologies and what the future might hold for the industry. The conference included sessions on contracting models, rescue and fire life safety and new technological developments as well as an international project spotlight presentation from Nasri Munfah about the Eurasia Tunnel, connecting the European and Asian sides of Istanbul, Turkey.The project, also known as the Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing project, was named the 2015 Major Tunneling Project of the Year by the International Tunneling and Underground Space Association.The tunnel boring work for the 3,344-m (11,000 ft) long tunnel under the Istanbul Bosphorus Strait was completed in August, heralding a new era in tunneling.Tunnel boring work was launched in April 2014 with a ceremony with then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in attendance. The work was completed on Aug. 22, 2015 with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu participating in the ceremony."

The Sloan Ranch kimberlite complex is located approximately 130 km north-northwest of Denver in the Precambrian core of the northern Colorado Front Range (Figure 1). A Devonian age for the complex is suggested by the fossil assemblages in limestone xenoliths (Chronic and others, 1969), and by paleomagnetism of the kimberlite (E. E. Larson, personal communication, 1986). The presence of diamond was first reported in rocks from the Sloan diatreme by McCallum and Mabarak (1976). Prior to this time, the distinctive- appearing host rock of the Sloan diamonds had been quarried for use as terrazzo stone; examples may be seen in the floors of the airports in Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming. The Minerals Division of The Superior Oil Company obtained a lease on the Sloan property in 1980. During the next four years Superior built and fine-tuned a highly efficient diamond recovery facility, explored and tested the Sloan deposit, and used Sloan as a site for testing numerous exploration techniques for future use in a continuing exploration program in the Colorado-Wyoming kimberlite province. The Sloan property was ultimately determined to be sub- economic, but the lessons learned there have been very helpful in subsequent exploration efforts.

Since the advent of longwall mining systems in the United States, mine operators are increasingly relying on methane drainage techniques to supplement the ventilation system. The most commonly used technique is the vertical gob borehole. The number and spacing of vertical gob boreholes per panel is generally based on experience and underground conditions. To design a more efficient methane drainage systems, mine operators must accurately determine methane gas produced. Thus, mine operators must monitor gas flow and methane gas concentration on every vertical gob borehole on active panels at least once or twice during each 8-hr shift. As the mine grows, it is possible to have more than one operating longwall and many vertical gob boreholes. Thus, daily visits to each vertical gob borehole site can become very time consuming. During weekends when methane gas concentrations typically drop because there is no mining activity, borehole sites may not be visited. To obtain accurate gas flow data, a gob borehole monitoring system was designed and constructed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM). Gas flow, methane gas concentration, gas temperature, barometric pressure, and vacuum pressure of the exhaust fan are the parameters collected by the system. The system also includes circuitry for automatic shutdown of the exhaust fan and an alarm system before an unsafe condition is created. Telemetry components were also integrated into the system to allow for transmission of borehole data to the mine office. As a test, the system was installed and operated on a vertical gob borehole for six months. Test results indicated that intermittent measurements with hand-held instruments from vertical gob boreholes were always higher than gas flows measurements made by the gob gas analyzer system. This paper describes the system components, operational characteristics, and the results of the test program.
