The Groveland Mine. Concentrator and Pellet Plant are located in Dickinson County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The construction of the Groveland Mine in 1959 was the first United States operation for the Hanna Mining Company in mining and beneficiating low grade iron formations. (1) The plant produced concentrates at 675,000 lt/yr. (746,600 mt/yr.) which was used as sinter feed in the steel industry from 1959 to 1963. Upon completion of a pelletizing plant in April, 1963 production increased to 1.6 million lt/yr (1.77 million mt/yr) of pellets. After the plant expansion, mill capacity increased to 2.2 million 1t/yr (2.43 million mt/yr.), producing 2.0 million It/yr (2.23. million mt/yr.) of pellets assaying 63.0% iron and 7.0% silica. (1) Prior to April, 1971 the concentrator operated with a flowsheet consisting of spirals and a petroleum sultonate iron notation circuit. This was presented in a paper by R. R. Smith and E. E. Sougstad, "Flotation at the Groveland Mine" in the 50th Anniversary Volume entitled "Froth Flotation". The ore body at the Groveland Mine consists basically of two types of iron formation (34% total iron, 20% magnetic iron head), the most abundant of which is a bedded magnetite-chert-silicate rock. This is intermingled to varying degrees with non-bedded to poorly bedded hematite-clastic quartz-chert rock. (1) In developing the Groveland flowsheet, Humphrey spirals were used because of their ability to produce a coarse size concentrate at a low cost. Tests run in the lab and pilot plant on the Groveland ore showed a. spiral weight recovery in the 27 to 33% range. (2) However as the ore body was opened up, it became evident that the most abundant ore type did not liberate at the coarse size fraction needed for spirals. Plant recoveries for the first five years operating the spirals only averaged from 10 to 15% weight recovery. In 1971 the weight recovery on the spirals had dropped to a low of 5%. To increase iron recovery and at the same time increase plant capacity with the least effect on the present operations the mill flaw-sheet proceeded from a spiral-notation circuit to an all flotation circuit to a magnetic separator-flotation circuit. During this changeover the concentrate grade also had to be improved to meet market demands. To do this the following changes evolved

In collaboration with Kennametal Inc. and corry rubber corporation, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a drill bit isolator to address noise overexposures associated with roof bolting machines in underground coal mines. NIOSH laboratory studies confirmed that the drill bit isolator reduces noise during drilling. Field studies were needed to confirm that a noise reduction could be obtained under working conditions and that the device was sufficiently durable. This paper reports results of field tests of the device conducted at five underground coal mines. Noise reduction was assessed by comparing the operator?s noise exposure during drilling with and without the drill bit isolator. Durability was assessed by recording the number of holes and total feet drilled with each bit isolator until either the test period ended or the device failed. The results from these tests showed that the device is an effective noise control in a mine environment. The field-tested drill bit isolators provided a noise reduction of 3-5 db(A). Of nine devices tested for durability, five exceeded 610 m (2,000 ft) drilled and two exceeded 762 m (2,500 ft) drilled before failure. Durability issues found in the field tests led to final production optimizations that have resulted in a commercially available product for drilling with 35-mm- (1.3-in.-) diameter roof bits and hexagonal drill steels.

The underground mining evolution for block cave mines in Chile and worldwide has made important strides in the last decades. Nonetheless, reserves determination in the initial stages of these types of projects—mainly for long-term planning—is not studied in as much detail as it should be, especially regarding the impact on the final value of the enterprise. Today, the first estimation of the size of a block cave mine, typically expressed in tons, tends to determine very large footprints and ore bodies. The resulting large-scale mine is obtained by applying the marginal cut-off grade (COG) to determine reserves. Yet, in many cases, it is possible to obtain an equal or higher benefit, extracting fewer reserves in less time, with a smaller active area, which significantly reduces the project’s uncertainty. To explore scenarios obtained by applying a higher marginal COG in the initial phases of the project, the Hill of Value methodology is used to estimate the net present value (NPV) in relation to the production rate and the COG. However, the application of this methodology considers certain simplifications that generate results which are not completely satisfactory in specific cases. This paper suggests an improvement of this method to obtain more reliable results regarding determination of a COG profile that will optimize the NPVof a block-cave project. The methodology was developed and applied in a massive polymetallic deposit with zinc, lead, and silver mineralization, corresponding to a real block caving project. The methodology provides NPV results that differ by approximately 15% in comparison to the real mine plan, while also being considerably simpler and faster to calculate. In summary, the proposed methodology provides a reasonable and fast procedure to estimate higher than marginal COG that increases the NPV of block cave mine projects.

Process plant modeling in the computer environment has been developed over the past 40 years by implementing the comminution models formed by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, University of Queensland, in the early 1970s. The models for the other processes in a mine value chain, such as blast fragmentation and flotation, were continuously developed and improved in parallel as well. Other research and commercial entities have also developed process modeling methodologies in the computer environment, which evolved as specialized commercial software or through equations set up in Excel spreadsheets. These were performed on a local computer, in thousands of simulations over a long period of time due to hardware limitations and the lack of a fully automated process. This limits the application of detailed process simulations for scale-up and strategic planning analysis, as they require many simulations to cover all possible scenarios which would take a lifetime when using local computers. The Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES), as the next generation of cloud-based software package, has made it possible to run simulations on the entire operation value chain in the same platform, including drilling and blasting, crushing, grinding, flotation, and other downstream process and material-handling units. This capability has allowed IES to handle multivariable simulations across the mine value chain, including pre-concentration and in-pit size reduction, and modify the process simultaneously.

Technological progress in the planning and production of most modern infrastructure is constantly striving for new records on basis of highly specialized solutions and know-how. Humans and technology have accomplished excellent achievements over the past few years in varied, difficult terrain. New length records are being set with the 64 km long Brenner Base Tunnel and the HS2 Railway system currently under construction in Europe. Cities are building ever longer and more demanding sewer tunnels. The paper highlights some of the challenges, trends and innovations of long-distance tunnelling projects.

Northwestern Resources Co. (NWR) was established in 1972 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Western Energy Company of Butte, Montana, to acquire, explore, develop, and produce energy resources outside the state of Montana. Western Energy is a coal mining company with successful operations in Montana and Wyoming. In 1974, NWR acquired its first lignite lease in Texas. NWR eventually acquired a large leasehold in central Texas, which was identified as having a high potential for future production. In 1979. NWR contracted to supply lignite to Utility Fuels, Inc. (UFI), a fuel affiliate of Houston Lighting and Power Company (HL&P). This project, together with leases held by UFI, became the Jewett Mine. Lignite from the Jewett Mine is used as fuel at the adjacent HL&P Limestone Electric Generating Station, at an annual rate of approximately 7.3 Gkg (eight (8) million tons) per year.

Land use is the single most important element affecting the quality of our physical environment. .The minerals industry is a user of land and by its very nature, directly affects the landscape. Mining is a very visible activity. Producers of sand and gravel, crushed stone, clay, cement and lime operate right at the interface of the public. These production sites must be located near population centers. People are more travel oriented than years ago and through use of the expanded interstate highway system visit remote and little-visited areas. They visit communities on their vacations, places they enjoy on weekends and places they drive past on business trips. Although not residents of these localities, they have a strong interest in changes that occur in the landscape. As a result, the public has a greater concern today about mining and its use of land. From 1930 through 1971, the minerals industry used 3.65 million acres, or 0.16 percent of the land mass in the United States (4)2/. Of the total 3.65 million acres utilized, about 59 percent was accounted for by the area of excavation, 20 percent by disposal of overburden and other mine wastes from surface mining, 13 percent by disposal of mill or processing wastes, and 5 percent by disposal of underground mine wastes; the remaining 3 percent was subsided or disturbed as a result of underground workings. Nonmetallic minerals and fossil fuels each accounted for 43 percent of surface land used during 1930-71; the metal mining industry utilized the remaining 14 percent.

The Homestake Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota is one of the few remaining gold properties still in operation, in this country. The mine is relatively deep, with a bottom production level of 4250 feet, and a bottom development of 6200 feet. 4, 800 tons of ore are produced daily from three rather large, but inconsistent ore bodies; the dip of which is easterly at about 72 degrees, and the plunge to the south is about 30 degrees. The ore is, for the most part, a chlorite schist with large veins of secondary quartz and cummingtonite schist The ore is not continuous in any direction, but is localized at the ridges of the very intricate system of anti clinal folds. This property has been in active production since its establishment in 1876, except for a period during World War II. The incentive, or contract pay system, has been a gradual process that has been developed by the trial-and-error method down through the years. In looking over the old records, hand-shoveling was paid on an incentive basis as far back as 1916. Since this time, the contract system has grown until it now includes almost all types of underground work - except haulage and maintenance work

The main aim of this work is to evaluate whole-body vibration (WBV) of dozer operators based on three sitting postures (i.e., with 15° lean forward inclination posture, vertically erect posture with no inclination, and with 15° lean backward inclination posture) in Indian surface coal mines. A seat pad tri-axial accelerometer was used to collect WBV data from six dozer operators for three different sitting postures. Results showed that except for Dozer-1, 2, 4, and 5 operators during lean forward sitting posture and Dozer-4 operator during vertical erected posture, no other dozer operators have exceeded an exposure limit value (ELV) of 1.15 m/s2 in any of the considered sitting postures. Similarly, the vibration dose value (VDV) based on exposure action value (EAV) of 9.1 m/s1.75 has surpassed for all the dozers. But no dozer operator has exceeded an exposure limit value of 21 m/s1.75. The outcome of the study infers that based on “above health guidance caution zone (HGCZ)” for daily vibration exposure, i.e., A(8) measurements, for the operator sitting in lean backward postures the vibration amplification was reduced by 32.89% less compared with lean forward posture and 16.23% less when compared with vertically erected posture. Similarly, based on VDV(8), the exposure to vibration for the lean backward posture was reduced by 33.34% when compared with lean forward posture and 17.11% less when compared with vertically erected posture. Based on the above observation, it is concluded that lean back inclination with a trunk flexion of 15° is a favorable sitting posture, as it exposes the dozer operators to minimum vibration.

The Zijinshan gold-copper mine, in spite of the low-grade nature of the ore, has become one of the largest production-scale and most profitable non-ferrous metal mines in China. The successful application of hydrometallurgy as well as proper engineering design are the key factors for large-scale development of the Zijinshan gold-copper mine. In this contribution, the practical experience acquired in the development of the Zijinshan gold and copper mines is summarized. This covers most aspects of the production process including mining, beneficiation, ore stacking, heap (bio)leaching, carbon-in-leach, solvent extraction, electrowinning, wastewater and tailing treatments. The authors believe that this practical experience will not only help to promote the development of hydrometallurgy, but can also serve as a model for other gold and/or copper plants around the world.

Despite further declines in production for some producers, 1986 proved to be a landmark year for the asbestos industry. The key event was the adoption of The Asbestos Convention by the Inter- national Labour Organization (ILO) and its 150 member countries. The document, entitled "Safety in the Use of Asbestos", reaffirms the international consensus on the "controlled-use" approach to chrysotile asbestos regulation. The decision of the ILO has come at a critical point in time. It represents a major turning point and provides an important building block for the long term future of the asbestos industry.

Basic design features, details of the face ventilation system, roof support and Operator protection system, certified lighting, and in-mine evaluation plans are presented for an Automated Extraction System (AES) that has been designed to fill needs which are present in the Mining Industry. The philosophy of design and proposed operation of the machine, as well as the relationships between these factors, are reviewed. The AES is designed to help overcome production problems resulting from the regulation of roof control, clean-up, ventilation, dust suppression, and operator protection required by the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. The design permits more continuous operation and greatly improves operator safety. The machine is a full-face drum-type continuous miner which includes self-advancing, continuous temporary roof support and permanent roof support equipment. Onboard self-advancing face ventilation, dust suppression, and air scrubbing equipment are also included in the design. A further improvement over existing equipment is the incorporation of an automatic programmed cutting cycle control system. All mining functions including movements of the roof support system are handled by this automatic system.

Introduction Deep open-pit mines invariably affect the local and regional hydrologic systems. Pit dewatering, occurring during mining operations, puts an obvious hydrologic stress on these hydrologic systems. However, post-mining hydrologic impacts resulting from the pit refilling with groundwater following the cessation of mining activity can also be significant. The prediction of the rate at which the post-mining pit will fill with groundwater is a critical aspect of assessing the long-term hydrologic impacts. Numerical groundwater flow modeling provides a method for predicting the groundwater refilling rate of the pit. The rate at which pit "lakes" fill depends on several factors: •the rate and duration of pit dewatering; •the depth and size of the ultimate pit and •the pre-mining hydrologic regime. These factors can be incorporated into a detailed numerical groundwater flow model that can then be used to assess the effects of dewatering and post-mining recovery on the local and regional hydrologic systems. A sufficiently detailed, numerical groundwater model provides the oportunity to: •account for complex geology near the pit; •assess the impact of active pit dewatering and •predict the long-term impacts of post-mining groundwater flow into the pit. A detailed groundwater model incorporating these items has been developed and applied at an operating open-pit mine. Developed by Durbin and O'Brien (1987), the three-dimensional, finite-element, groundwater flow model was used to represent the hydrologic system of an approximately 253-km2 (98-sq mile) area surrounding the pit. Historical groundwater elevation data, stream flows and meteorologic, geologic and geophysical data were used to establish the dimensions and initial conditions for the model. Steady-state conditions, representing the pre-mining local and regional hydrologic systems, were simulated using the initial conditions incorporated into the groundwater model. The groundwater model was then utilized to simulate various dewatering programs, to predict the filling rate and the groundwater depth in the ultimate pit once mining activities are complete and to assess the long-term impacts on the regional groundwater flow system. Development of pit lake model Groundwater modeling efforts were completed in two phases. The first focused on pit dewatering activities, while the second phase concentrated on the post-mining effects on the hydrologic system. The final estimates of groundwater elevations calculated during the pit dewatering simulations were used in predicting the post-mining recovery of the hydrologic system. The groundwater model was also modified prior to the second phase to account for the volume of rock removed during mining activities. To account for the actual volume of rock mined, the geometry of the post-dewatering model grid was modified to approximate the final pit geometry. The depth and width of the ultimate pit were divided into eight idealized stages that represented significant changes in the bench geometries. These eight stages were then introduced sequentially into the model according to the predicted water elevations within the pit. In this way, changes in the volume and depth of water within the pit were accounted for through time. Once the ultimate pit geometry was accounted for in the model, it was necessary to assign new hydraulic characteristics to those parts of the model grid (elements) that represented excavated rock. The solution of the numerical model requires that finite hydraulic conductivity values be assigned to the portion of the groundwater model that represents excavated rock. Therefore, the calculated groundwater elevations differ, somewhat, between the edges and the center of the open pit. These model-calculated water elevations at the edge and in the middle of the open pit represent the elevation of water that would occur in the pit lake. To minimize the error in the estimated level of water within the pit lake, the hydraulic conductivity was increased to a value that would: •minimize the predicted difference between the groundwater elevations across the open pit and •produce a numerically stable solution. Specific storage is the hydrologic parameter that accounts for the water produced by compaction of the aquifer matrix. To predict the groundwater volume that would flow into the ultimate pit, this parameter was assigned a value equivalent to the compressibility of water. This value of specific storage reflects the post-mining groundwater storage occurring as an open body of water. "Lithium is a soft, silver-white alkali metal with atomic number 3. As of 2015, the end use of lithium was estimated to be as follows: lithium-ion batteries (35 percent), ceramics and glass (32 percent), lubricating greases (9 percent), air treatment (5 percent), continuous casting mould flux powders (5 percent), polymer production (4 percent), primary aluminum production (1 percent) and other uses (9 percent) (Jaskula, 2014). Lithium is found in brine lake deposits containing lithium chloride and in hard rock pegmatite deposits. It can be sold in a range of product types; as mineral concentrate, brine, compound (lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide) and metal depending on its intended end use (Goonan, 2012; Jaskula 2014).In the 1990s, the United States and Chile were the largest producers of lithium globally, primarily from brine operations (Ober, 1994). Most of the lithium compounds produced during this period were consumed in the glass, ceramics and aluminum industries. In the 1980s and 1990s, there were two major lithium operations in the United States: brine operations at Silver Peak, NV and a spodumene mine and lithium carbonate/lithium hydroxide plant in Kings Mountain, NC. The Kings Mountain operations ceased production in 1991 and were eventually dismantled in 1994. Brine operations were also active in Argentina and Chile, while the largest lithium ore deposit in the world was operated at Greenbushes, Western Australia. During this period, it was predicted that major shifts in demand for lithium would come from the success and widespread use of electric vehicles (Ober, 1994).Lithium is still produced from the brine operations at Silver Peak. But in more recent years, Chile has become the world’s leading producer of lithium carbonate from brines. Australia has maintained its position as the world’s largest producer of lithium mineral concentrate, the majority of which is exported to China to produce lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide (Jaskula, 2014).A spodumene concentrate was also produced at the Tanco Mine in Manitoba, Canada beginning in the 1980s through to 2010 when lithium operations were suspended due to fluctuations in the lithium market price (Martins et al., 2013)."

This paper will describe design of precast segmental tunnel lining for the Pawtucket CSO Tunnel Project in Providence, Rhode Island. The tunnel is 11,700 LF long with 30-foot finished diameter to be constructed in complex sedimentary rocks. Special features of the segments include a large keystone and no connector used on radial joints. The typical segments will be steel fiber reinforced, and hybrid segments with additional steel rebars and shear bicones will be used around the adit openings without use of any structural framing. The important design considerations will be discussed, including special 3D segment to adit connection analyses performed.

Remote sensing methods have been used to evaluate vegetative growth patterns for many applications, though relatively little work has focused on tracking mine reclamation progress. For coal mines in Central Appalachia, reclamation approaches that include production of biofuel feedstocks are increasingly attractive, as these may yield significant post-mining land values and contribute to carbon-neutral energy supplies. To optimize biomass productivity, the influence of reclamation practices on biomass production must be well understood, which necessitates tracking biomass production over long time periods. Satellite-based estimations may offer low-cost alternatives to conventional biomass estimations and, also, the potential to provide critical input for carbon accounting at varied spatial scales. In this paper, experimental biomass production plots on reclaimed mine sites established in Wise County, VA, are used for a comparative study of satellite spectral derivatives, which are evaluated against groundbased biomass estimates. Metrics based on four spectral derivatives, band ratios and spectral transforms were regressed against biomass measured in situ for different species. The results demonstrate that greenness and principal component 2 (PC2) were more efficient than the other spectral derivatives for monitoring the biomass of this reclaimed area. Also, it is shown that Landsat-5 TM has provided promising results for monitoring of the biomass changes occurring from 2008 to 2010 over the study area.

Interstate 70 running into the mountains west of Denver, CO is the main access to the state?s numerous ski areas and other tourist attractions. As such, the highway is a vital part of Colorado?s economy. Due to the mountainous terrain in which it winds, I-70 is limited to two lanes in either direction. And, during the past few decades, the volume of traffic has increased to the point where motorists encounter major delays, particularly on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings heading west from Denver, and then again on Sunday evenings heading east. In the past, those delays occurred mostly during the ski season. However, many of the mountain towns have been successful in turning their resorts into year-round vacation destinations. A good move economically, but the pressure added to I-70 has caused even greater traffic delays, sometimes to the point where some Front Range residents avoid trips to the mountains.
