There are tens of thousands of inactive mine features in 274 mining districts in New Mexico (including coal, uranium, metals, and industrial minerals districts). However, many of these mines have not been inventoried or prioritized for reclamation. Many of these mines have existing mine wastes, generated during mineral production, which could have potential for critical minerals, especially since the actual mineral production was generally for precious and base metals and not critical minerals. The purpose of this project is to characterize and estimate the critical mineral endowment of mine wastes and “beta-test” USGS sampling procedures. This project is important to the state of New Mexico because critical mineral resources must be identified before land exchanges, withdrawals or other land use decisions are made by government officials. Future mining of mine wastes that potentially contain critical minerals will directly benefit the economy of New Mexico. Possible re-mining of mine wastes could clean up these sites and pay for reclamation. Furthermore, this project will include training of younger, professional geologists and students in economic and reclamation geology by the PIs.

Giant gold deposits are considered products of crustal-scale systems. Reduced fluids stored in mid to lower crustal reservoirs were discharged into mid to upper crustal sites of deposition. Elements of the architecture include crustal-scale structures, reduced packages of rock and regional seals. Gas-rich aqueous fluids were common but non-aqueous fluids may have been significant in the deeper parts of the systems. Fluid fluxes in over pressured domains were maintained by porosity waves. Abnormal heat input from the mantle may not be required once the systems were perturbed. Fluid-mixing and hypogene enrichment were probably the most significant precipitation processes.

Tunnel segmental lining design constitutes a significant iterative process where modeling and numerical analysis are factors in deciding the number of segments, their dimensions, gasket placements, as well as the locations of dowels and bolts. Consequently, these modifications lead to revisions in the final drawing details. However, the current tunnel engineering practices lack systematic solutions that effectively bridge the gap between the iterative design process and efficient visualization of completed drawings due to the time- consuming nature of redrawing. This paper presents a pioneering application of AI-driven solutions including using Autodesk's API, for the Northside Interceptor Tunnel (NSIT) Project. It showcases the automation of drawing design and the real-time visualization of modifications, thereby streamlining the drawing process.

The Government or Jamaica has just completed agreements with four of the five bauxite/alumina companies operating in Jamaica. These companies are Kaiser, Reynolds, Alcoa, and Alcan, and the Agreements came into effect on February 1, 1980. One of the results of these new Agreements is the Acquisition of all company-owned bauxite lands by the Government and the rationalization of bauxite reserves.

The steepness of an openpit mine’s slopes has a substantial influence on the mine’s financial return. This paper proposes a novel design methodology where overall steeper pitwalls are employed without compromising the safety of the mine. In current design practice, pitwall profiles are often planar in cross section within each rock layer: that is, the profile inclination across each layer tends to be constant. Here, instead, a new geotechnical software, OptimalSlope, is used to determine optimal pitwall profiles of depth-varying inclination. OptimalSlope seeks the solution of a mathematical optimization problem where the overall steepness of the pitwall, from crest to toe, is maximized for an assigned lithology, geotechnical properties and factor of safety (FoS).

The presence of high-grade massive sulphides near York Harbour, Newfoundland has been known since the turn of the century. In the early 1900's a small, massive-sulphide deposit was worked by conventional hand methods and yielded about 100, 000 tons of high grade copper-zinc ore. Since that time, a number of mining companies have held options on the property and an exploration adit was driven along the fourth level of the original mine. Underground drilling revealed several additional massive sulphide lenses in the range of 10, 000 to 60, 000 tons (Fig. 1). The problem facing Long Lac Mineral Exploration Ltd. when they undertook an option on the property in 1969, was to outline any possible extensions to the known sulphide lenses which were outside the reach of underground drills and to search for new ore deposits which might double the known reserves into a feasible project for development. GEOLOGY AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES: The geology is typical of many massive sulphide deposits within volcanic rocks in the Canadian Shield. The sulphide pods appear to occur along a complex andesite-basalt contact. Identification of the two volcanic types is difficult since they are almost the same colour. The most direct means of identification is by the slight difference in their magnetic susceptibilities. Pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite are the main minerals in the sul¬phide lenses. The ore is massive, differing in density from the host rock by at least 1.0 gm/cc. There is little pyrrhotite or magnetite associated with the sulphides, so there is no appreciable difference in magnetic susceptibility between the sulphides and the basalt. "Foreword by Ren BryceSenior engineer, Freeport-McMoRan, Oro Valley, AZ, USAThe eighth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the national SME Annual Conference & Expo in Denver, CO. A total of 33 students presented their work at the poster competition. The competition started in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes.The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the competition. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. The first-place winner receives $1,000; the second, $500; the third, $250; and the fourth through seventh, $200. All remaining students receive $100. All of the students also receive a complimentary ticket to the MPD Luncheon. The students are able to display their work to future employers, and industry professionals can talk to up-and-coming engineers. "Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have studied the influence of headgate side ventilation controls near the longwall start-up room on the formation of explosive gas zones (EGZs) in underground coal longwall bleeder ventilated gobs. In a project funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers developed a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model to study the formation of methane-air mixtures in the gob, start-up room, and bleeder entries. The relative change in size and location of EGZs are examined in response to ventilation controls in the headgate side bleeder entries near the start-up room. Modeling suggests that adjustments to the ventilation controls can be made to minimize the size of the EGZ. However the EGZ may form in or around active working areas regardless of the ventilation control settings. Research found regulators on the crosscuts into start-up room and first entry inby can force air into to crosscuts outby the start-up room causing more air to flow through the gob. INTRODUCTION Underground longwall mine ventilation systems may operate with either a bleeder ventilated gob or a progressively sealed gob. Bleeder ventilated gobs must meet the standards for safe operation of the bleeder system by examining bleeder system effectiveness. As defined in the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Program Policy Letter (PPL) No. P13-V-12 (MSHA 2013), the pillared area or gob is “any area where a reduction in pillar size has occurred during retreat mining” and includes the “caved and broken material, the interstices within the caved material, and the open spaces surrounding the caved material.” The PPL further states that the intended purpose of ventilating the gob is “to protect active workings from the hazards of methane accumulations …” The requirements for operating a bleeder system as stated in The United States Code of Federal Regulations (CFR 2013) Title 30 §75.334(b) is to pass ventilation air though the gob “and to continuously dilute and move methane-air mixtures [from the gob] away from active workings and into a return air course …” where the concentration cannot exceed 2 percent methane (CFR 30 § 75.323). Further clarification of the bleeder system as described in the PPL states the following: “A bleeder system includes the area from which pillars are wholly or partially recovered, bleeder entries, bleeder connectors, and all associated ventilation control devices that control the air movement through the area. Bleeder entries are air courses designed and maintained as part of the bleeder system.”"

"Water drawn from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta provides water supply to 66 percent of California’s population and supports the state’s agriculture industry. The existing through-Delta water system is outdated and unreliable with environmental risk to some fish and wildlife species. The Bay-Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP) has been established to environmentally retrofit and modernize California’s water delivery system through the Delta by restoring habitats, constructing new diversion points in the north Delta and providing a means to transport water supplies under the Delta, rather than through sensitive natural channels.Under BDCP, the Delta Habitat Conservation and Conveyance Program (DHCCP) has developed several alternatives to convey water from the Sacramento River in the north to the existing pumping facilities in the south Delta through an isolated conveyance system. The new conveyance system would become an integral part of the State Water Project (SWP) and the federal Central Valley Project (CVP) by transporting water to the export pumping plants for each of these projects. The DHCCP is managed by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), while state and federal water contractors provide technical support to the program.The initial conceptual study efforts on the overall program commenced in 2007 and examined various options for the proposed conveyance system. Several conveyance alternatives were analyzed at that time. The Conceptual Engineering Report published on Oct. 1, 2013 identified the modified pipeline/tunnel option (MPTO) as the preferred alternative to be included in the BDCP environmental documents. MPTO includes three river intakes and pump stations along the Sacramento River, various sizes of pipelines and tunnels, junction structures and two forebays that are capable of delivering up to 4 million gpm (9,000 cfs) from the Sacramento River to the SWP and CVP. The river intakes are located near Hood in Sacramento County approximately 64 km (40 miles) from Clifton Court Forebay (CCF) in Contra Costa County. This route would cross portions of Sacramento, San Joaquin and Contra Costa counties. Figure 1 depicts the configuration of the MPTO alternative."

This paper describes the application of a cyclonic flotation column (CFC) for coal cleaning. A CFC makes use of centrifugal force to create a density gradient in a column to augment the froth flotation process. In a CFC, a series of angular helical inserts is attached to the wall of a conventional column and coal slurry is mixed with a series of impellers attached to a central shaft. The hydrophobic froth concentrates near the center shaft and moves upward, while the relatively heavy hydrophilic particles concentrate near the wall and are guided downward by the helical inserts. Results of pyritic sulfur removal from an Upper Freeport coal during CFC flotation are discussed in this paper.

This first section of case histories of mineral discoveries, Vol. 3, covers some of the milestones in porphyry copper and skam exploration successes. It was during the era of these discoveries that large, complex exploration departments emerged as permanent adjuncts of large mining companies. The discoveries helped shape how and where exploration activity was conducted. Probably the most important factor in exploration success is management. Few management people are mentioned in this section or in any exploration history, yet the distinction between success and failure ultimately rested with the decisions they made. One of the most successful groups was initiated by Roger Straus and Herbert Brownell when they sought to make Asarco into an important metal producer. Relying on Clem Pollock and L.H. (Bill) Hart to identify and push worthwhile projects, the Asarco management remade the company. Asarco will benefit from exploration successes com- pounded by that team for years to come. Duval is an example of a management that decided to add metal production to its industrial minerals output. When Page Morris was president, that company opened three major porphyry copper mines and became an important factor in metals. Under the Monis management team, Duval became a leader in exploration. At the other end of the scale are managements that snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and by so doing changed the character of their companies in other ways.

Thiourea is a reagent capable of complexing gold and silver. With the proper oxidant, thiourea can effectively dissolve metallic gold and silver. A thiourea leaching system possesses potential advantages over conventional cyanidation including acidic solutions instead of alkaline, cationic complexes in contrast to metal-cyanide anionic complexes, and faster leaching rates with acidic solution of thiourea. Generally, the rate of metal dissolution in thiourea solutions is fastest when ferric ion is employed as an oxidant. Acidic thiourea solutions for certain applications could offer a nontoxic and noncorrosive option for processing gold and silver. This paper provides information regarding the fundamental chemistry of the acidic thiourea system, and reviews the dissolution of both silver and gold in acidic solutions of thiourea. The recovery of gold and silver from acidic thiourea solution is discussed.

The title of my paper, "A Company's Response to Federal Coal Leasing," brings to mind a picture of a dog chasing its tail. This is what the coal industry, has been doing since the Federal coal leasing moratorium went into effect in 1971. We've gone around in many circles, but we are only very slowly, if at all, getting closer to catching our tails, i.e., efficient, economical, and rational Federal coal leasing. My companies, The North American Coal Corporation and its four Subsidiaries, The Falkirk and Western Plains Mining Companies and The Coteau and Missouri Valley Properties Companies, together hold in excess of 4.5 billion tons of lignite reserves in North Dakota. Some of our North Dakota properties are substantially interspersed with Federal coal, with the government holding title to the minerals in every other section. This checkerboard pattern of Federal ownership has made it difficult to develop and market some of our reserves, and, as a result, it has become imperative that we be familiar with and active in the Federal Coal Leasing Program.

To overcome the difficulty of accurately judging the load state of a wet ball mill during the grinding process, a method of mill load identification based on the singular value entropy of the modified ensemble empirical mode decomposition (MEEMD) and a probabilistic neural network (PNN) classifier is proposed. First, the MEEMD algorithm is used to decompose the vibration signals recorded under different load states to obtain the intrinsic mode components, and a correlation coefficient threshold is used to select the sensitive mode components that characterize the state of the original signal. Second, singular value decomposition is used to obtain the singular value entropy. Finally, the load state of the wet ball mill is judged based on the magnitude of the singular value entropy. A characteristic mill load vector is constructed from the singular value entropies of the cylinder vibration signals recorded under different load conditions and is used as the input to a PNN, which then outputs the predicted ball mill load state; in this way, a load state identification model is established. Grinding experiments are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, showing that the method can accurately identify the load state of a wet ball mill. ()

As open pit mines continues to grow deeper, managing air pollution can become challenging. During arctic air inversion, the temperature of the air over the mine increases with altitude, and the cold, heavy, surface air is trapped in the pit. This problem is complex, and any solution will require an extensive understanding of the interactions between the aerodynamic movement of air, air inversion, meteorology, pollutant sources, and transport phenomena in the open pit mines. The availability of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has elucidated the pollutant flow mechanism in open pit mines. Very few CFD studies have been published, especially the Large Eddy Simulation (LES), on the contaminant transport in deep open pit mines under arctic air inversion. The contaminant transport in an open pit mine under arctic inversion is due to a stable or nocturnal boundary layer in micro-meteorological terms. Understanding the physics of the stable boundary layer (SBL) is relevant to air flow and pollutant transport in deep open pit mines. This paper focuses on a Large Eddy Simulation (WMLES as Sub-Grid Scale Model) modeling of the SBL and pollutant transport in a large open pit mine.

The calculation of costs for an underground mine, as well as the planning of the equipment and materials to be used, is a complex and time-consuming process. The estimation depends on a multitude of parameters, and all mining processes are interconnected. A novel tool has been developed that enables automated calculation of underground mines and allows for the comparison of the effects of changing individual parameters. Previously, changing individual planning parameters often necessitated a complete recalculation of the mine. The newly developed calculation tool provides an innovative planning aid that allows for more efficient and accurate mine planning and cost estimation. The tool enables the user to implement continuously up-to-data costs and prices. This allows for more accurate planning data and results. The underlying concept of the calculation tool, its implementation at a planned quartz porphyry mine in Germany, and the verification of the tool at an existing underground mine will be presented.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW), located in Tucson, AZ, will hold its 16th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet Saturday, Dec. 5,1998. The Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding contributions to the mining industry by selected individuals and industry partners. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two mining history honorees are chosen by the , Hall of Fame Committee and the Board of Governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the Mining Foundation initiated a Medal of Merit to recognize outstanding individual, technical and professional contributions to the mineral industry. In 1995, an award was created to recognize contributions made by companies and organizations in partnership with the mining industry. This year's inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker will be Charles G. Preble, president and chief executive officer of Southern Peru Copper Corp. He is being recognized for outstanding performance as an executive of an American company operating under difficult circumstances in a foreign country. The Hall of Fame will induct H. Myles Jacob, former chairman and CEO of Inspiration Copper Co., for innovation and farsightedness in matters pivotal to the cop- per industry of his time. In addition, John Cromwell Lincoln, former president and chairman of Bagdad Mining Co., will be inducted for his outstanding contributions to the American mining industry. These contributions include metallurgical research and development of the Bagdad Mine as well as pioneering innovation in the electrical industry. Medals of Merit will be awarded to David N. Skillings, editor and publisher of Skillings Mining Re- view, for his dedication and support of mining interests. J. Ruben Velasco Rodriguez will also receive a Medal of Merit. He is economic geologist, professor and former secretary of the board of directors and secretary general of Compania Minera de Cananea. His medal is for fostering excellent relations between Mexico and the , United States in mining geology and management and for advancing the professional development of others in the field of earth science. An Industry Partnership Award will be presented to Stephen Bechtel and the Bechtel Corp. in recognition of Bechtel's 100th anniversary and the company's outstanding service to the mining industry. The adsorption of uranium onto Wyoming bentonite was measured in carbonate media over the range pH 8-11. Uranium was removed from solution onto the solids by a rapid reaction, proposed to be adsorption of the anionic uranyl tricarbonato complex onto edges of the clay platelets, and a slow reaction which may be precipitation of a hydroxide. The changes in uranium content of the aqueous and solid phases of a uranium ore carbonate leach slurry were also measured as the slurry was progressively diluted. There was an increase in the uranium content of the solids as the pH of the suspension was lowered, as was observed with the Wyoming bentonite. The results indicate the conditions that should be met with respect to pH control in order to prevent the problem of excessive uranium adsorption in the counter-current decantation washing circuit of a conventional leaching process, as well as in the leaching and restoration phases of carbonate solution mining.

Pricing for tantalum raw materials experienced explosive increases in the period 1978-1979, and-similar declines over 1980-1982. The causes for this are examined. Negative effects on the industry are highlighted. Analysis is provided of subsequent structural changes within the industry which minimize probability of future pricing excursions. Data on markets, sources of material, and outlines of concentration and extractive processes are reviewed. The conclusion is reached that expanded sources, future flat demand, and a broader international base of industry participants are principal forces in this restructure. Flat demand is reviewed as a function of increasing application of tantalum, but in more cost effective forms. This is driven by technical advance, notably in electronics applications.

3-dimensional finite element modeling was performed to analyze the safety factors of stump pillars, 18 ft. x 18 ft., under a cover of 208 ft. using the Modified Drucker-Prager Theory. The results showed that they are safe. This was substantiated by underground observations. But the safety factors predicted by three commonly used pillar design formulae showed otherwise. This paper discusses the modeling details and anlyze the difference between 3-D FEM method and traditional pillar design formulae.
