Two of Peabody Western Coal Company's mine operations are the focus of this paper ... Black Mesa Mine and Kayenta Mine, both located in Northern Arizona. These two locations are unique for a variety of reasons. ? The two mines have only two customers, both power plants, one the Southern California Edison's Mohave Generating Station near Laughlin, NY, the other the Navajo Generating Station near Page, AZ. Close in proximity, these two locations ships nearly 12 million tons of coal per year. ? Material is shipped to these customers two ways: via a 273 mile underground slurry pipeline, which by the way is longest in the world, and by a 17 mile long conveyor to four storage silos. Product is then shipped via train from the storage silos to the plant sites.

"Float coal dust is produced by various mining methods, carried by ventilating air and deposited on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. If deposited float dust is re-entrained during a methane explosion, without sufficient inert rock dust quantities, this float coal dust can propagate an explosion throughout mining entries. Consequently, controlling float coal dust is of critical interest to mining operations. Rock dusting—adding inert material to airway surfaces—is the main control technique currently utilized by the coal mining industry to reduce the float coal dust explosion hazard. To assist the industry in reducing this hazard, NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) initiated a project to investigate methods and technologies to reduce float coal dust in underground coal mines through prevention, capture, and suppression prior to deposition. Field characterization studies were performed to determine quantitatively the sources, types, and amounts of dust produced during various coal mining processes. The operations chosen for study were a continuous miner section, a longwall section, and a coal handling facility. For each of these operations, the primary dust sources were confirmed to be the continuous mining machine, longwall shearer, and conveyor belt transfer points, respectively. Respirable and total airborne float dust samples were collected and analyzed for each operation and the ratio of total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust was calculated. During the continuous mining process, the ratio of total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust ranged from 10.3 to 13.8. The ratios measured on the longwall face were between 18.5 and 21.5. The total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust ratio observed during belt transport ranged between 7.5 and 21.8. INTRODUCTION During the extraction of coal, various dusts are produced that can be classified into two categories of interest: respirable and float coal dust. Respirable dust (diameter 10.0 = µm) has the capability to penetrate beyond the terminal bronchioles and become deeply embedded into the human lungs, leading towards respiratory disease complications (Potts et al., 1990). Float coal dust is defined as coal dust having a diameter less than 74 µm (Harris et al., 2009). During the mining process, float coal dust can be deposited on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. With the proper mixture of methane gas (between 5% and 15%) and an ignition source, a methane gas explosion can occur (Barker and Humphreys, 1996). The resulting explosion can develop a pressure wave which lifts the deposited float coal dust material into the air, propagating a disastrous coal mine explosion (Harris et al., 2010). The current technique to safeguard against the propagation of a coal mine explosion is to treat the mine airways with incombustible rock dust (typically limestone), maintaining an 80% total incombustible content of the deposited material. NIOSH initiated a project to investigate control technologies that could be aimed at reducing the amount of float coal dust allowed to deposit in the mine airways using three approaches: prevention, capture, and suppression prior to deposition. Reducing the float coal dust being generated during the mining processes and capturing or suppressing airborne float coal dust prior to deposition would in turn increase the efficiency of the applied rock dust used to prevent mine explosions."

In November 1980 a combined airborne electro-magnetic (INPUT.) and magnetometer survey was conducted by Questor Surveys Limited in the State Line Area, Colorado-Wyoming. The survey was the result of discussions over a prolonged period between the authors and various investigators of the State kimberlite occurrences. As a result of these discussions and literature studies, it was decided that airborne geophysical methods would be potentially useful in the exploration for new kimberlite occurrences. The survey was designed by Paterson, Grant and Watson Limited and conducted by Questor Surveys Limited over an area in which more than 15 kimberlite bodies were known and on some of which ground geophysical surveys had been conducted. The survey was designed primarily to determine the airborne electromagnetic and magnetic responses of the known occurrences and to deter- mine whether these responses would be detectable under similar conditions in other parts of the State Line District and elsewhere.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) cooperated with 3M Company in the design and testing of a new environmentally controlled primary crusher operator booth at the company’s Wausau granite quarry near Wausau, WI. This quarry had an older crusher booth without a central heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, and without an air filtration and pressurization system. A new replacement operator booth was designed and installed by 3M based on design considerations from past NIOSH research on enclosed cab filtration systems. NIOSH conducted pre-testing of the old booth and post-testing of the new booth to assess the new filtration and pressurization system’s effectiveness in controlling airborne dusts and particulates. The booth’s dust and particulate control effectiveness is described by its protection factor, expressed as a ratio of the outside to inside concentrations measured during testing. Results indicate that the old booth provided negligible airborne respirable dust protection and low particulate protection from the outside environment. The newly installed booth provided average respirable dust protection factors from 2 to 25 over five shifts of dust sampling with occasional worker ingress and egress from the booth, allowing some unfiltered contaminants to enter the enclosure. Shorter-term particle count testing outside and inside the booth under near-steady-state conditions, with no workers entering or exiting the booth, resulted in protection factors from 35 to 127 on 0.3- to 1.0-µm respirable size particulates under various HVAC airflow operating conditions.

Introduction A major uncertainty in assessing the potential for heap-and dump-leach projects is how to determine the extraction-rate curve for the recovery of the mineral values from coarse ore. Such material could either be run-of-mine (ROM) or primary crushed ore. The problem with field testing coarse ore, especially for new projects, is the large scale and extended leach times needed to accurately determine the final extraction-rate curve. At least 5 x 103 to 5 x 104 t of representative ROM ore are typically required for a copper test heap, and much more is often used. Kennecott, for example, recently constructed a 0.9 Mt (1 million st) ROM test heap at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah. In such coarse ore operations, the ultimate level of extraction will require a leach cycle that can extend from several months to a few years. Quite often, project development schedules do not provide the luxury of mining such large quantities of material or running such long tests. Instead, test data are usually limited to results from column leach studies on relatively fine ore, often with a top size that does not exceed 25 mm. Maximum leach times are also short, typically less than a year before an initial decision is needed on project viability. Proposed method One approach to estimating the recovery from a coarse ore leach is to assume that the leach solution will have some ultimate penetration distance into the rock. Then, the final level of mineral extraction in this "leached rim" will equal the ultimate level of extraction identified in various testing programs. Obviously, if the radius of a given rock fragment is less than the penetration distance, that fragment will be fully leached at the end of the operation. With larger rock sizes, the percent recovery will fall off as the size increases and the fraction of unpenetrated rock mass increases. Such an approach sounds simple but is likely to be complex when applied to a real project. For example, the penetration distance will be a function of both the rock characteristics and the effective length of the leach cycle. The important rock characteristics include rock porosity, the degree of internal fracturing and the mode of mineral occurrence. With regard to the latter, penetration is likely to be greater if the leachable mineralization occurs on fracture surfaces or in veinlets, as opposed to fine grains uniformly disseminated throughout the rock mass. An estimate of penetration distance may be derived from column or heap tests by noting the depth of solution penetration into the larger rock fragments after three, six and 12 months of leaching. While the penetration rate is ore specific, something on the order of 10 to 20 mm/y may be appropriate for competent, primary copper (chalcopyrite) ore. For gold in tight quartz, the rate may be about the same. Copper oxide ores and gold that is hosted in a more porous rock matrix are likely to have penetration rates that are at least two to three times higher, and an even higher rate should be appropriate for uranium hosted in sandstone. As noted above, the length of the effective leach cycle is likely to be measured in years. On this basis, the ultimate penetration distance (dp) would vary from less than 50 to several 100 mm when a particular ore is leached to exhaustion. Several sets of mathematical manipulations are necessary to convert a rock size distribution and corresponding value of dp into an estimated extraction-rate curve. The first step is to break the ROM size distribution down into intervals and then calculate the radius for the mean rock size in each interval. This is shown in Table 1 for rock sizes up to 1.75 m (about 6 ft) in diameter. The next step is to calculate the volume of unleached core and the fraction of rock that is leached. This is done for the following three values of dp: 25, 100 and 250 mm. Results are shown in Table 2. The third step is to select the ultimate level of recovery that will be achieved in the fraction of material that is effectively leached, i.e., the outer zone that is penetrated by the leach solution. In addition to directly analyzing the surfaces of minerals using high vacuum instrumentation methods, some important surface properties of mineral fillers can be determined indirectly by using reactive chemical probe molecules. This technique enables the strength and the number of the surface reactive sites to evaluation and this type of information is useful in predicting interfacial behaviour of minerals. One method of classifying these surface sites is by using Lewis acid/base theory and this type of approach could enable one to predict the adsorption of functional groups in dispersants, thickeners, pigments, etc. Also the adhesion of polymer matrices to the filler surface may be improved.

Both private industry and the Interior Department have become alarmed about the enormous amount of Federal land that has been withdrawn from appropriation either under the Mineral Leasing Laws or the Mining Law of 1872. According to a recent article by Gary Benethum and L. Courtland Lee, governmental actions have withdrawn nearly 400 million acres from the operation of the Mining Law of 1872 and over 500 million acres from the Leasing Laws. An addition al 100 million acres for the Mining Law of 1872 and 70 million acres for the Leasing Laws are either encumbered or being managed in such a way as to constitute a defacto withdrawal from mineral development. This means simply that mineral exploration end development under the Mining Law of 1872 is either prevented or discouraged in an area the size of the states of California, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, and one half of Colorado combined. Under the Mineral Leasing Laws, exploration and development is either prevented or discouraged in an area equal in size to all the states east the Mississippi River, except Maine.

The Surface Mining control and Reclamation Act (public Law 95-87) (here-inafter the "Act" or "SMCRA") passed by congress in August of 1977 represents a comprehensive federal scheme for controlling surface coal mining and the surface effects of underground mining through permitting requirements, performance guidelines, and reclamation planning. While the provisions of the Act have been the subject of numerous legal challenges and court battles over the years, it is difficult to identify a more controversial program within the Act than the provisions for designating lands as unsuitable for surface coal mining operations. The lands unsuitable designation process provides for the acceptance and review of petitions submitted by citizens or organizations seeking to have specified land areas designated unsuitable for all or certain types of surface coal mining activities. In filing these petitions, the interested parties or petitioners are required to make allegations about potential adverse impacts on people or the environment and submit evidence supporting their allegations.

In this study, a unique excavation system was characterized, utilizing waterjet technology as the primary tool for material removal during rehabilitation of reinforced concrete and shotcrete structural liners. Through empiric testing, this research seeks to validate the hypothesis that waterjet removal of these support systems will result in less unintended damage than conventional removal methods. The intent is to develop a viable technology that will reduce the collateral damage caused to surrounding liners during excavation, improve the adhesion between shotcrete and the substrate for longer lasting ground support, and improve overall safety for workers in underground environments. An analysis on the fracture mechanisms and operating parameters of each method was completed. Instrumented shotcrete panels were physically tested and examined through visual inspection and ground penetrating radar (GPR) to compare substrate damage according to each testing method. After testing was completed, the data strongly indicates that waterjet cutting causes less collateral damage to the surrounding intact liner and substrate when compared to that of conventional impact hammers. This research is intended to provide a scientific basis for additional applied research in the rapid excavation and repair of shotcrete support systems.

In flotation practices, as particles become finer, such as smaller than 20 μm, process efficiency declines markedly. Selective agglomeration of fine particles is a technique to enhance the recovery of fine valuable minerals in flotation circuits. Different agglomerating methods have been introduced and tested. One method that has recently received much attention is to make use of magnetic force to aggregate fine particles. A selective aggregation of fine paramagnetic particles, such as sulfide minerals, can be achieved in the high-intensity magnetic field prior to or during flotation. The method is simple, selective and effective for fine particles and has low operational cost, though a minimum magnetic susceptibility for fine grains is required to promote the process. In this paper, the implementation of the ProFlote magnetic conditioning device in Boliden’s Garpenberg old concentrator in Sweden, where a complex massive sulfide ore is treated, is presented and discussed based on Boliden’s Garpenberg plant. The results showed an increase in the flotation recovery of fine valuable minerals. Zinc (Zn) production was increased by between 1,100 and 1,500 t/a, while salable yearly silver (Ag) production was increased by 1,500 kg. The copper (Cu) grade in the final concentrate was increased by 1 percent, while reductions in its Zn and lead (Pb) grades were obtained. Abstract. The shaft was drilled on U.S. Government land in the Piceance Creek Basin and was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. It was drilled to 723 meters (2 371') to provide access to rich deposits of oil shale, nahcolite and dawsonite for geotechnical test work and environmental mining research. Rotary drilling and dual string, reverse-air, jet-assist circulation methods were used. Drilling required 8 months. Site preparation, running and cementing the casing required another 4 months. A 2.44-meter (96-inch) ID steel welded casing, 5.1 cm (2 inches) thick was installed and 2 700 tonnes (63 000 sacks) of cement were slurried and pumped into the annulus.

Buckhorn ore is hydrous, argillized basaltic andesite, and is at least 60% clay composed of kaolinite and subordinate montmorillonite. Moisture content runs from 10% to 25%. The original crushing plant was a typical compression type, employing a jaw crusher, and two cone crushers. The system was plagued with constant plugging and unable to meet production plans. The three compression crushers were replaced with a Stamler Feeder Breaker followed by a Hazemag Impactor. Production plans are now exceeded. Agglomeration has progressed from an agglomeration drum to cascading conveyors, to introduction of the lime and cement into the primary crusher.

As the mining industry begins efforts to examine the feasibility of extraterrestrial resource utilization, the extraction and processing of icy regolith containing water and other volatile materials will be the initial focus for future expansion of capabilities. Pure water is essential for human consumption, and a source of oxygen and hydrogen. The latter, along with the volatile materials, lend themselves to the creation of fuels that may be used for further space exploration at distances not currently feasible. For any extraterrestrial scoping project, the transport of materials to geoscientists remains virtually impossible. Therefore, analysis must be done in-situ, possibly millions of miles away from the nearest human. To address the need for geologic resource estimation in the absence of geoscientists, an infrared framework has been developed for the analysis of water ice content in simulants of permanently shaded lunar regolith. This framework relies on a convolutional neural network model for the rapid analysis of percent water ice content in samples, at which point standard geostatistical methods may be employed.

"A section of a London Underground expanded segmental lined tunnel constructed in the 1970’s progressively deteriorated after 2001, with extensive radial joint spalling and mid-segment cracking. As part of the PPP contract Tube Lines Ltd and their partners carried out various analyses of the tunnel, including analysis of laser scans of the tunnel, geotechnical testing through the tunnel walls, geotechnical desk studies, real-time monitoring and even full-scale segment testing. This paper discusses the behaviour of the tunnel lining in this setting, the causes of failure and the lessons that can be learnt from this rare example of a tunnel which was progressively failing in service. It is finally noted that a replacement tunnel lining was installed during night-time possessions and completed in 2015. INTRODUCTION In 2003, Tube Lines Ltd. was established under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) scheme to provide maintenance services and upgrade projects for London Underground (LU). The Deep Tube Tunnel Knowledge and Inspection Programme comprised the assessment of all tunnels, shafts and other underground structures. This included a number of lengths of tunnel constructed using segmental concrete linings. First used by LU in the 1960s, the savings both in cost and speed of construction led to concrete linings replacing cast iron for new tunnel construction in all but a few cases. During the initial scoping phase of this programme, inspections identified potential issues with the expanded concrete segmental linings on the Jubilee line. The inspections found a number of segments with surface spalling (Figure 1a), which did not appear on the post-construction defect records. These were generally relatively shallow, up to 40mm deep, spread over a wide area of segment. These were different to spalls caused by handling damage, which are typically localised at segment corners. Subsequent inspections over the following years identified an increasing number of segments with these types of spalls as well as an increased incidence of longitudinal mid-segment cracking (Figure 1b). The increasing occurrence of these defects was hypothesised to be caused by tensile stresses developing in the vicinity of the joint."

"All-in sustaining cost is a metric used by mining companies to reflect the cost of gold mining in a consistent format useful to both investors and mining professionals. Cost reporting focused on the direct cost of mining and processing ore was summarized in the non-GAAP cash cost developed by the Gold Institute in 1996. In 2013, a group of mining companies, working with the World Gold Council, developed a more inclusive approach to reporting costs designed to solve the dilemma of showing a more comprehensive reflection of recurring costs involved in producing gold, without discouraging investors. INTRODUCTION Mining today plays a key role in the development of our civilization as a source of essential raw material and provider of essential fuels, producer of jobs, and a factor in support of the international balance of monetary payment (Camm, 2014). Professionals in mining locate, develop, design and manage ore deposits in an environmentally safe and profitable manner. As mineral deposits become increasingly scarce, new challenges face the industry. A current trend is to an increased emphasis on underground mining techniques for deeper deposits. Operations are safer today than before as companies understand better their work environment and the importance of mining responsibly. A continual challenge for the industry is accurately reflecting the costs and selling price of ore. An enduring characteristic of mining is the situation where the market typically determines the price of a commodity; the main control a company has on the bottom line is to control the cost of production. An attempt to bring light and clarity on the cost of their business will give a better idea to investors on the true profitability of the mining business. Gold producers face this struggle to accurately reflect the cost of production while also seeking to attract the interest of the investment community (Hill, 2013). In order to have a consistent format to report on their production costs, leading gold producers through their alliance inside the World Gold Council (WGC), worked on the adoption of a new cost framework: the All-in Sustaining Cost (AISC) and All-in Cost (AIC). Since 1996, the traditional cash cost reporting has focused only on the mining and processing costs incurred in mining an ounce of gold, which included the costs of goods sold (labor, energy, and consumables costs) and royalties (Table 1). But cash cost reporting ignores many important aspects, like sustaining capital, general and administrative expenses, and site rehabilitation at the end of the mine life (Whelan, 2013). The cash cost was used to attract many investors into the business. In fact the high gross margin (sales minus cash costs) has been promoted the past decades by the industry instead of the net or operating margin. As a result, even when the gold price was high, nearly $1900 per ounce in August 2011, gold producers were not reporting excessive profits in their cash flow / income statements, to the disappointment and incomprehension of investors (Milstead, 2014). The truth was simply that the other costs omitted in the traditional cash cost were reducing the apparent profits."

The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel will ensure system reliability in the event of a major earthquake and increase the Greater Vancouver Water District’s capacity to meet a growing population’s longterm needs. It includes a bored tunnel between two deep shafts located in North Vancouver and Burnaby, BC, Canada. The support of excavation for the 16-meter-diameter (52.5 ft) TBM launch shaft consists of 83-meter-deep (272 ft) unreinforced concrete slurry walls. This paper discusses challenges encountered during construction of the launch shaft slurry walls, namely excavation methods and slurry loss, and mitigative solutions implemented to successfully complete the shaft with minimal impact to project schedule.

There has been a steady increase in shiploading capacities in the last 20 years. One of the reasons has been the general increase in ship sizes, with the largest vessels currently around 280,000 DWT in the bulk trades. Obviously, the large vessels can accept loads faster and their economic utilization justifies higher loading rates, up to a point. The high capacity facilities have loading rates far beyond this point. The economic logic of these facilities is based on the fact that for a given annual throughput the capital and operating cost of a single high capacity system is less than that of two smaller systems. Thus, where the projected throughputs are large, there is a great incentive to reduce capital costs by maximizing capacity. Tubarao, in Brazil, designed for a 100 million ton per year throughput with one finger pier and one high capacity berth is a successful demonstration of this approach. In the current state of the art, the high capacity systems have shiploading capacities in the range of 10,000 - 16,000 TPH, for annual throughputs of 20 million tons and larger per loading berth.

A study was made of the physical and chemical nature of silica minerals found as natural impurities in bentonites and montmorillonitic Fuller&apos;s earth clay products as well as in <10 micron dust from eight processing plants. The results show that the silica minerals present in these clay materials are totally encapsulated or encased in clay. No "free" silica minerals could be observed in SEM images of either granular or powder products or in dust samples collected for MSHA crystalline silica analysis. Silica minerals, such as quartz, are identifiable by SEM and EDS analysis only after removing the clay coatings by vigorous washing. After washing it can be observed that all crystalline quartz grains also have diagenetic overgrowths of what is probably opaline silica. The clay and opaline silica encapsulation of quartz plus the strongly hydro scopic nature of montmorillonite are believed to be responsible for there not being a single confirmed case of silicosis among workers in the subject plants after more than 65 years of production.

Secondary use of mined-out space in underground limestone quarries is emerging in the Kansas City area where abandoned quarry sites are being renovated into warehouses, factories, and offices. Mining techniques, ceiling heights, and pillar distribution are being altered as planning for the secondary use of mined-out space is combined with the quarrying process. Even the historic urban- quarry land use conflict invites a reappraisal in that this development provides a potential resolution of the problem. Mutual subsidization by dual rock and space interest is changing the economics of rock production. A city is much more than a surficial adjunct superimposed upon the topography of an area. Its development and growth are deeply rooted in the resources, benefits and problems of its underlying geology. The environmental geologist must address himself to more than the quality of a particular resource. He must comprehensively relate resource extraction and processing with the urban emphasis of optimal use which favors long term usage of land over one time economic ventures. Limestone quarrying, closely allied with the growth of many cities, has commonly left a series of scarred landscapes in the path of the burgeoning metropolis. These abandoned quarry sites are barriers to orderly city growth and fail to serve the people as useful and taxable land. Where quarries are functional, supplying the city with needed growth minerals, problems of blasting damage, noise, and dust exist. Technology faces the challenge of making mineral production and processing good neighbors to the urban market they serve. Continued growth of cities may require more efficient use of space below as well as above the surface optimizing land usage so that long term economic benefits may be reflected in improved mining methods.
