For sulfide minerals, the presence of dissolved oxygen in the water phase is an influencing factor for separation by flotation. Klassen and Mokrousov(I:217l distinguish three stages of oxygen adsorption; namely, reversible adsorption, activated adsorption and, finally, surface oxidation. While contraversial, limited adsorption of oxygen is believed to improve the interfacial reactivity between collector and mineral. Intensive surface oxidation of sulfide minerals usually results in unsatisfactory flotation with collectors of the xanthate type. The influence of dissolved oxygen in the water phase has received consideration for sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcocite, and covellite(2,3,4,5,6). However, the nature of surface oxidation products of sulfide minerals has received very limited investigation(6,7). Lightly oxidized galena promotes the adsorptive reaction of surfactant (xanthate or dixanthogen). Tolun and Kitchener(8) state that limited interaction occurs between galena and xanthate under relatively reducing conditions. And, that exposure to oxygen raises the electrochemical potential of the galena to that required for reaction with xanthate or dixanthogen. In the latter condition, the galena has an "effective flotation surface". On the other hand, intensive oxidation of galena reduces the chemical reaction with xanthate collectors (9) . Complete flotation with xanthate-type surfactants with increasing oxygen content in the water phase has been determined to have the following sulfide mineral sequence(3): galena, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and arseno-pyrite. The work of Cusack(4) suggests that some threshold amount of oxygen is necessary for flotation to occur, but heavy oxidation hinders flotation with xanthates. According to Tolun and Kitchener(8) catalytic oxidation of xanthate to dixanthogen occurs. The 2-mile Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel was constructed in 1954 to then-current mining and construction standards. Due to its lifespan and deteriorating condition it is now being stabilized and rehabilitated using conventional excavation and ground support. At its southern end, below the prestigious Three Arch Bay community, the original tunnel alignment passes under a historic landslide where the tunnel was sand-backfilled and capped by bulkheads in 1957 due to severe and caving ground conditions. Video footage of the existing 21- inch clay pipe showed that the pipe is severely damaged, which could potentially cause a catastrophic pipeline failure and sewage spill into the Pacific Ocean. This paper summarizes the thorough investigation and design process, tunnel realignment construction and monitoring, and the notable cooperation between all parties to overcome the project risks.

The approach to Risk Management during the procurement of major projects often has a significant outcome on the ultimate successful delivery of a project. The $NZ4.4B Auckland City Rail Link project is the largest and most complex transportation project yet undertaken in New Zealand. Risk management prior and during procurement was undertaken in accordance the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (TCoP) and through the use of an Alliance Geotechnical Baseline report. This paper describes the measures taken during the procurement process to achieve certainty with respect to outcomes and minimise project risks whilst also achieving value for money. This included the use of cloud-based delivery of geotechnical data and 3-D geological models, reducing tendering costs and allowing a focus on risk mitigation measures during the tender rather than data management.

This paper discusses the use of Conditional Simulation (CS) models to provide mill feed grade profiles for different time periods. The conventional approach of classifying block estimates as ore or waste generally does not adequately represent dilution, lost ore and the anticipated grade control data, including variability of mill feed from the pit and possible stockpiles. The detailed simulation of grade control practices can be done, but at the Pre- or Feasibility stage of the project may be impractical, since drawing dig limits on multiple benches is tedious and time consuming. Using the Feasibility Grade Control (FGC) method as developed by the Centre for Computational Geostatistics (CCG, University of Alberta-Edmonton), the CS models can be processed quickly to establish dilution and lost ore, and predict daily or short-term feed to the mill. The simulated nodes can be aggregated into selective mining units with adequate representation of likely geometries to be recovered from the pit, to mimic anticipated selectivity. An example from a large copper deposit is shown. The study provides an estimated stream of tonnages and grades fed to the plant by mining periods of interest and based on a specific mine design and schedule. The resulting cash flows support the economic and financial analyses of the Feasibility Study; also leads to improving mine schedules; and aids in developing blending schemes if necessary. INTRODUCTION The conventional approach of separating mineralized material into ore or waste categories does not always include a realistic amount of dilution and ore loss. Also, often it does not provide a good estimate of the grade that will be fed to the mill. If the grade control estimates are unbiased, they will over the long run represent the long-term average of grades fed to the mill; but the anticipated variability of mill feed from the pit and stockpile sources may be misrepresented. Some references on traditional grade control implementations can be found in Chunnett (1982); Davis et al. (1989); Srivastava et al. (1992); and Nowak (1992). Alternative methods based on economic variables improved significantly on the purely grade-based control methods, see Douglas et al. (1994). Further developments involved the use of geostatistical conditional simulations (CS) and profit models, which in several cases have been successfully implemented (Aguilar and Rossi, 1996; Rossi, 1997; Deutsch et al., 2000; Norrena and Deutsch, 2002; Neufeld, 2005; Jewbali and Dimitrakopoulos, 2009). But they can be impractical, mostly due to the lack of understanding of the methodology involved; even if semi-automatic dig limit drawing is implemented, there is always a need for is tedious and time consuming checking and corrections, even if using a single profit model derived from the simulated grades.

Following three major mining accidents in 2006, the MINER Act of 2006 was enacted by the U.S.Congress. The U.S. Mining Safety and Health Administration subsequently released the Final Rule on Refuge Alternatives for Underground Coal Mines, which required every underground coal mine to install refuge alternatives to help prevent future fatalities of trapped miners in the event of a disaster. The following paper documents the research that was performed on a structural wall to be used in conjunction with a breathable air system to create a refuge alternative. A 103.4-kPa (15-psi) safe haven polycarbonate wall for use in underground coal mines was designed and modeled using finite element modeling in ANSYS Explicit Dynamics. The successful safe haven wall design was modeled for an actual underground coal mine environment using the explicit finite difference formulation program FLAC3D to determine the responses of the wall and surrounding strata within a mine. A full-scale design was fabricated and installed in an underground coal mine to determine any construction constraints and as a final step in proof of concept for the safe haven wall design. This paper is meant to introduce the reader to a new wall concept to be used in conjunction with current technology.

Wireless technologies are increasingly being implemented in underground mines for various purposes such as communications, tracking, remote control, remote sensing, and environmental monitoring. However, the adoption comes with risks as common wireless systems, such as WiFi, Bluetooth, IWT (Innovative Wireless Technologies) wireless system, often operate in the unlicensed ISM (industrial, scientific, and medical) band. The shared nature of the ISM band can lead to interference among devices and consequently cause performance degradation and reliability issues. In this study, we developed two wireless communication evaluation boards as a tool to evaluate the performance and reliability of a wireless system with the presence of electromagnetic interferences (EMI) from other wireless systems in underground environments. We adjusted various parameters including signal power from adjacent frequency channels, noise power within the same channel, the movement of personnel, and communication packet size. Our findings indicate that, while the power of the EMI source plays a key role, the motion of personnel in the tunnel also has a strong impact on performance, and this impact increases as the power of EMI sources increases. In noisy environments, smaller packet sizes are preferable as they enhance the likelihood of successful transmission. High levels of interference or noise can lead to increased packet loss or error rates, potentially causing communication links to fail completely or become ineffective. The evaluation boards utilized in this study are based on a practical wireless transmission system deployed in a remote controller for a heavy mining machinery used in underground coal mines. The results and findings presented in this paper can aid in the design of wireless systems that are resilient to EMI in underground mining environments.

The western industrial world has to rely more and more on complex polymetallic sulphide ores as sources for base metals. These ores are composed of fine grained sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and marcasite. The liberation sizes of the individual minerals can range between 30 um and 5 um. Therefore, applying conventional techniques to recover these finely disseminated minerals usually results in unsatisfactory metallurgical performances with high losses of the valuable mineral to the slime , fraction of the tailing. New concepts for treating these polymetallic complex ores are discussed in this paper. Beneficiation techniques utilizing new reagents and a new approach to pulp preparation are described. Some of these techniques were applied to ores from existing concentrators as well as to new ores. The results of these studies are discussed in the following sections.

In this review, availability of germanium in primary and secondary resources and its recovery from these resources are presented. With nearly 40% germanium consumed in fiber optics and scarcity of resources, the global consumption outplays the primary production. Germanium exists as a substituted element in zinc sulfide matrix of lead–zinc sulfides and lignites. Nearly 60% of the germanium supply is met by zinc refining residues, and about 20–30% of germanium is produced from coal and its by-products. Germanium recovery from various resources such as zinc plant residues, coal and coal plant waste, spent optical fibers, and copper flue dust has been examined. Bioleaching was exploited by few researchers to extract germanium from zinc sulfides, sulfide tailings, jarosite, coal fly ash, and flue dust. This review covers the various work carried out by different chemical separation processes, viz., chemical precipitation, solvent extraction (SX), ion exchange (IX), and membrane processes, as well as biological approaches.

Cyprus Pima Mining Company is located in the Mineral Hill District of southern Arizona, approximately 22 miles south-southeast of Tucson. Cyprus Pima Mining Company is owned 50.01% by Cyprus Mines Corporation, 24.99% by Utah International Incorporated, and 25% by Union Oil Company of California, with Cyprus having the management responsibility. Cyprus Pima's history has been one of continued expansion from an initial plant of 3,000 TPD in 1957; 6,000 TPD in 1963; 18,000 TPD in 1966; 36,000 TPD in 1967; and 53,500 TPD in 1972. The major reason for Expansion IV was that a large volume of low-grade ore had to be moved to get at a higher grade ore in the course of proper pit development. With mining costs already defrayed, this relatively hard, low-grade material became economically profitable for subsequent milling and concentrating treatment. Similar material previously stockpiled was available for ore treatment. In an effort to meet the continuing search for lower unit costs, the largest milling and concentrating equipment had to be examined. The management of Cyprus Pima Mining Company began investigating autogenous, and semi-autogenous milling in 1964 when two carloads of ore selected from the Cyprus Pima pit were sent to the Koppers--Hardinge Operation at York, Pennsylvania for testing. One car contained approximately 40 tons of hard arkosite and the other contained approximately 40 tons of ore classified as soft Hornfels. The purpose of the testing was to determine the amenability of both ore types to autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding.

"Talc formed by hydrothermal alteration of preexisting carbonate rocks is known to be nearly monomineralic, and lacking in amphiboles. In southwest Montana, talc formed from hydrothermally altered dolomitic marbles, and is still actively mined. These talc deposits are typically in contact with quartzofeldspathic gneiss and marble. Accessory minerals vary between these rocks and the ore producing body; the identification and characterization of such minerals requires carefully selected analytical methods. Recent litigation and ensuing confusion over the petrology and asbestos content of these deposits challenges the talc mining industry in Montana, and elsewhere in the world. INTRODUCTION Commercial talc has been mined from the deposits in southwest Montana since the 1940s, and by 1956 the region had output 200,000 tons of talc ore (Chidester et al., 1964). Commercial talc refers to rocks containing more than 20% of the mineral talc (McCarthy et al., 2006); the ores from Montana typically contain upwards of 90% talc. This region remains the leading domestic source of talc in the U.S. partly due to the reserves in the area, and partly due to the diagnostic purity of the ore compared to that of other regions, some of which are no longer actively mined. The mineral talc, a sheet silicate, is expressed by the formula Mg3Si4O10(OH)2, and therefore can form in geologic environments that are rich in Mg, Si, O and water. The protolith for the talc deposits in southwest Montana is a dolomitic marble, but other common protoliths include ultramafic igneous, mafic igneous, and siliceous dolomites (McCarthy et al., 2006). Physical properties such as hardness of 1 on Mohs hardness scale, white streak and slippery feel are among some of the reasons why talc is so widely used as fillers in a number of industries. In decreasing order, ceramics, paper, paint, roofing, plastics, rubber, and cosmetics are the leading domestic industries that use talc despite the decreasing trend in U.S. talc use and production since 1994 (Virta, 2015). The purpose of this paper is to describe the mechanism of talc formation in southwest Montana by focusing on talc deposits and surrounding rocks in the Ruby, Greenhorn, and the Gravelly Ranges, and to relate the mechanism of formation to the composition of talc ores. The compositional data show mineral content of selected ores, and the major and trace element content of those minerals, specifically talc. Our electron microprobe (EPMA), powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray fluorescence data for samples from five mines in these three ranges provide continued evidence of the purity of these ores despite claims made during recent litigation that these ores contain asbestos. The five mines that we discuss include the Beaverhead, Treasure, Regal, Willow Creek, and Yellowstone Mines (Figure 1.)"

Kinetic tests results are influenced by methodological variables, including test duration and mine waste particle size. Some samples tested produced neutral drainage in kinetic tests for more than two years prior to drainage acidification. The potential for long "lag times" can be assessed based on the mine waste mineralogy. The lag time duration can be estimated using this mineralogy in conjunction with dissolution rates observed in the kinetic tests. The influence of particle size on the drainage quality is dependent on the variation of the availability of acid-producing and acid-neutralizing minerals with particle size.

The challenge of mining coal seams having a pitch of 30 degrees is one not frequently found in the United States, due primarily to the scarcity of such deposits. However, in the Thompson Creek District in Pitkin, Colorado, such a challenge exists to produce high quality medium volatile coking coal, and development of a longwall system is underway. The deposits under consideration are those of the Anschutz Corporation Inc. of Denver, Colorado, which are not in a virgin state. The properties were originally mined by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation from 1894-1907, and by the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. from 1953-1966. Approximately five and one half million tons of coal have been mined by the above companies, attesting to its quality. The cessation of operations in both instances was occasioned by economics. Both companies employed a room and pillar system of mining, but being denied the use of high capacity mining and loading machinery because of the excessive pitch of the coal seam. This resulted in an unfavorable productivity expressed as output per man-shift, and thus the high cost of production occasioned by hand loading and semi-mechanization dictated cessation of operations. The increasing demand for coal and depletion of shallow depth reserves are pushing towards deeper mining. In deeper coal mines with multiseam workings, the problem of ventilation surges many folds primarily related to air quantity requirement, heat, humidity and spontaneous heating/fire in goaved (gobbed) out areas. The paper describes the design of a new approach to improve the ventilation system of a real-life deep underground coal mine with multiseam workings. For this, the ventilation problem of one deep underground coal mine 6&7 pits Bhutgoria Amalgamated Colliery of Tata Steel Ltd. with multiseam workings has been studied in detail to determine an appropriate solution. A ventilation survey of the mine and computer simulation of the ventilation network has been carried out to reach a practical solution. Ventilation survey results have been analysed to develop a representative ventilation network of the mine for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Further, computer simulation of the ventilation network of the mine has been performed to virtually verify the application of a highcapacity booster fan in the present ventilation circuit without disturbing the vulnerable areas. Field validation is also carried out after the implementation of the solution in the mine to determine its efficacy. Thus, the findings of this paper can be directly applied for the installation of booster fans to achieve the required air quantity in deep underground coal mines with multiseam workings having spontaneous combustion liabilities of upper seam goaved out areas.

Two bench scale biochemical reactors (BCRs) were operated over a period of 3 months for the removal of uranium, radium, and selenium from mining influenced water (MIW). A BCR is an anaerobic reactor comprised of organic and inorganic substrate including woodchips, straw, sawdust, and limestone. Uranium and selenium are removed in a BCR by biological reduction of oxidized species (i.e., selenite, selenate) to less soluble forms (Pahler et al. 2007, Blumenstein et al. 2008, Rutkowski et al. 2013). It is believed that radium may be removed through absorption to the biomass in the BCR. The bench scale BCRs were constructed of 6 inch PVC columns with a top to bottom flow configuration. The bench influent water consisted of three different water ratios from two adit seeps. BCR hydraulic retention times of 24 to 36 hours were targeted during the study. Influent concentrations ranged from 19 ug/L to 1.86 mg/L for dissolved uranium, 12 ug/L to 270 ug/L for dissolved selenium, and 4.9 pCi/L to 24 pCi/L for radium 226. The average and maximum dissolved uranium removal was 93.6% and 98.5% respectively, the average and maximum dissolved selenium removal was 93.3% and 98.9% respectively, and the average and maximum radium 226 removal was 89.5% and 100% respectively.

This study presents a method for recovering valuable metals and synthesizing anhydrite from steel slag using sulfuric acid leaching and solvent extraction. The process achieved high leaching efficiencies for V, Ti, Fe, and Mg, and produced anhydrite with 93.09% purity. The leachate was further processed to separate and recover V, Ti, Fe, and Mg using selective stripping and precipitation methods, offering a sustainable approach to steel slag utilization.

"GENERAL PROJECT DATA The Sparvo Tunnel belongs to “Variante di Valico” project, a new 65 km highway link between Bologna and Florence, designed to renew the existing A1 route and to connect in a faster way Bologna and Flor-ence. It is composed of a 2,5 km twin tunnel excavated in a complex geological context, characterized by the presence of a series of surface landslides and methane gas. The gradient is 2.6 % and the minimum radius is 1’400 m. The internal diameter of the precast seg-ment lining, equivalent to the final section of the tunnel, is 13.6 m. MAIN TBM SPECIFICATIONS TBM Earth Pressure Balanced S-574 “Martina”, manufactured by Herrenknecht, has a theoretical excava-tion diameter of 15’615 mm. It is equipped with a conical shield 12.2 m long and four back-up gantries. The total length of the machine is approximately 130 m, weighing approximately 4’500 tons. The total installed power is 16’800 kW. The main drive has a diameter of 8’700 mm and has a triple axis roller type bearing equipped with a labyrinth system including 4 sealing lips. TIME SCHEDULE OF INITIAL TBM DRIVE A time schedule of the initial TBM drive is presented in the following list: •,August 25, 2011: start of the excavation of the 1st drive of the Sparvo tunnel •,October 29,2011: stop of the advance of the TBM for gear oil contamination and clogging •,October 29 to December 20, 2011: repair works on the main drive system and modifications on the conditioning system •,December 20,2011 to July 25, 2012: restart excavation of the 1st drive (north tunnel) and its breakthrough •,July 25 to November 29, 2012: 180° turning of the TBM, detailed check of the main drive seal-ing system and fixing problems on gear boxes, race ring, clamping ring and cutting wheel •,November 29,2012 to July 24, 2013: excavation of the 2nd drive (south tunnel) and its break-through •,August 2013 to July 31, 2014: disassembly of the TBM (first 4 months) and standstill of the jobsite for structural issues on precast concrete lining of the tunnel •,July 31, 2014 to March 10, 2015: inspection, dismantling and packaging of each part of the main drive (flange ring, gear box housing and main bearing). The mineralogy and textures of cyclone dust, sludge, and occasional build-ups in the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) direct iron making pilot plant at Universal, Pennsylvania have been studied by reflected light, transmitted light, and cathodoluminescence microscopy, and phase compositions have been determined by SEM-EDS. The cyclone dust consists of particles of carbon, metallic iron, sulfur-bearing iron, and wustite. Measurements of particles in the sludge indicate that 69% are less than 2.5 µm across, 21 % are 2.5-5 µm, and 10% are larger than 5 µm. Mineralogically the sludge particles are mainly carbon and metallic iron, with minor wustite and sulfur-bearing iron. Build-ups that sporadically develop in the furnace consist of olivine, hercynite spinel, metallic iron, wustite, pyrrhotite, pseudobrookite, akermanite-ferroakermanite and gehlenite. The microtextures shown by the build-ups indicate that much of that material has precipitated at the build-up loci. This study has been supported by AISI and the U.S. Department of Energy.

The Mercer Clay bed in central Pennsylvania has produced feedstocks for the refractory industry in the USA and has also been investigated as a source of alumina and lithium. Developments in global markets for these commodities, as well as rare earth elements, have led to their classification as critical minerals in the USA, in turn renewing production opportunities for the Mercer Clay resource. The work reported here includes a review of the clay types and minerals involved, as well as past mineral processing and extractive metallurgy test work, and reports new research results from renewed investigation of the deposit as a polymetallic resource. This renewed work has found lithium contents that exceed 1,000 ppm, lying directly below the overlying Mercer coal, where the alumina content ranged from 32 to 34 wt%. Total rare earth concentrations were somewhat lower than have been found elsewhere in the region, and the highest contents were also found to be stratigraphically close to the coal. Further work is required to establish the mineral hosts for lithium and rare earths and to define the extent of enriched alumina, lithium, and rare earth concentrations.

Tunnels are frequently specified by owners to be designed to a structural code, often a bridge code. In the USA, AASHTO have created a tunnel code, based on structural principles, the AASHTO LRFD Tunnel Design Specification. The Load Resistance Factor Design method (LRFD) described in the AASHTO title is an approximation to the probabilistic design of structures, based on the independence of load and resistance. This methodology is well known to be problematic in geotechnical design, but it is widely used. The paper considers the difficulties of this approach and describes alternative approaches that would result in more appropriate designs for tunnels.
