The Rondout-West Branch Bypass Tunnel is being built to bypass a substantial leak in New York City’s primary water supply tunnel. The 13,500 foot long tunnel travels 600 feet under the Hudson River through the same troubled geology and high pressure water inflows that the original tunnel did in the 1940s. A Robbins TBM traversed this geology and built gasketed segments. Nine thousand two hundred feet of 16 foot diameter interliner was installed and backfilled within the segments. Finally, reinforced cast in place lining was placed. This paper addresses the challenges and the multi-tasking approach the contractor utilized.

In 1985, an extensive longwall mining research project was initiated by the West Virginia University Research Center entitled "An Improved Longwall Mining Technique" with the purpose of providing operational guidelines for the mining industry to enable efficient operation of its existing and projected longwall installations. One task involved in this extensive research project was monitoring ground movements due to longwall mining and evaluating their impact on surface and subsurface structures. This paper presents an analysis of the effects of topography on quasi-static and dynamic ground movements and the severity of damage inflicted on surface structures. The site was chosen for the study with an attempt to obtain a representative account of the topography experienced in the Northern Appalachian region, and more importantly to contain a substantial number of varying topographical features i.e., mountains, hillsides, valleys, and flat bottom land. The study was made possible by typical subsidence monitoring technqiues, however subsidence monuments were surveyed on a frequent basis, intermittently during face advancement. Ground movements were investigated under both quasi-static and dynamic conditions. This provided insight into the propagation of subsidence and the dynamic affects it has upon surface structures.

Pre-combustion coal cleaning and post-combustion flue gas desulfurization (FGD) using lime or limestone are the primary methods employed to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission from coal combustion. These processes generate voluminous pyrite and gypsum solid wastes that are usually landfilled, occupying thousands of acres of land and creating serious land and water pollution problems due to the release of acids and toxic substances. An integrated process has been developed for the combined utilization of gypsum and pyrite wastes by converting them into useful products including lime, sulfur, and direct reduced iron (DRI). The process includes four major steps. The first step is to concentrate pyrite from coal preparation tailings using flotation or gravity separation. The second is the thermal decomposition of pyrite into pyrrhotite and sulfur. This is followed by the reduction of pyrrhotite with carbon in the presence of lime to produce iron and calcium sulfide. The fourth step involves the reaction of calcium sulfide with gypsum to produce lime. The chemical reactions involved in the process were studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD)techniques. Process variables studied included reaction temperature, time, reactant composition, and purity of reactants.

At the present time, whether an electric utility uses high-sulfur coal is largely determined by geographical location, clean air legislation, and the age of the power plant. Acid rain legislation may well be the new force to change the use of high-sulfur coal. A number of coal papers were presented at the SME Fall Meeting in St. Louis, MO, Sept. 1986. These papers discussed high-sulfur coal in relation to its economics, trends and prospects, value of cleaned coal, and coal-cleaning technology. The Clean Air Act of 1970 required the reduction of SO, emissions from most stationary electric-generating plant to 0.5 kg (1.2 lbs) SO2, per million Btu of heat input. It was possible for many plants to utilize lower-sulfur coal or a mixture of high-sulfur and low-sulfur coal to meet this emission requirement. This 1970 act greatly increased the use of low-sulfur western coal. The 1978 amendment to the Clean Air Act required all new plants to use Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) to meet a requirement of 70% reduction of potential SO2 emissions to 0.3 kg (0.6 lb) SO2 per million Btu of heat input. With the requirement to use FGD, there was little or no demand for low-sulfur western coal in new eastern power plants. If' new acid rain legislation is enacted, it likely will require sizeable reductions in SO2, emissions by existing coal users. There might then be a shift to greater use of low-sulfur coals. The low-sulfur coals could come from either western or eastern mines or from cleaned eastern coals. Economics will dictate the approach older power plants will take to meet new regulationsuse FGD or low-sulfur coal. Coal use for electric power generation has changed from 1970 to 1985. Table 1, (Land, preprint 86-333) shows the change. The table shows that in 1985, US utilities used about 255 Mt (280 million st) of high-sulfur coal. Some 45 to 54 Mt (50 to 60 million st) of high-sulfur coal is being used in plants equipped with FGD and most of this use is in eastern states. This leaves 200 to 209 Mt/a (220 to 230 million st) of high-sulfur coal being used without FGD treatment. These plants are at risk if acid rain legislation is passed. Most of these plants are in the east and are more difficult to supply with low-sulfur coal. Estimates range from $20 to $30 billion capital investment and from $5 to $9 billion dollars per year operating costs to reduce SO2, emissions from those old medium-to-high-sulfur coal-burning plants. G. W. Land, (preprint 86-333), also presents tables relating to power generating costs and coal types. The author's tables are extracted from Land's tables IV and V. Table 2 here presents costs for a new plant. This includes the impact of different heat rates, fuel costs, fuel qualities, operating and maintenance costs, labor costs, and waste disposal costs. Table 3 compares estimated costs to retrofit an older plant with a limestone scrubber versus switching the same plant to low-sulfur eastern or western coal. Costs of switching include upgrading the electrostatic precipitator and - with western coal - costs of derating. Bhagwat, (preprint 86-325), details the trends in high-sulfur coal markets from 1974 to 1984. He also gives some prospects for high-sulfur coal markets, 1984 to 1994. The prospect depends mostly on whether acid rain legislation is enacted. By 1994, if New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) continue to be applied, high-sulfur coal demand from six mid-west and eastern states is expected to increase by 27 Mt (30 million st). • L. A. With more than 20 major mines extracting copper, gold, coal, molybdenum and lime, Arizona is recognized as one of the better mining jurisdictions, not just in the United States, but in the world. However, that is not to say the road to production is always paved with gold, or in many cases, copper. Earning the license to mine in Arizona is a complex process with years of paperwork and permitting before the first tons of ore are ever processed. Now, get the federal government involved and the process becomes even more complex, and the path to production can become even longer.

A model of a new laboratory magnetic separator has been conceived to cater the needs of process engineers and mineralogists world over engaged in mineral characterization and beneficiation. It would be essentially a laboratory instrument for the separation and concentration of various ferro and non-magnetic minerals. Based on the basic concept of Frantz Isodynamic Magnetic Separator, the new separator conceived would not only speed up the work of a process mineralogist and save the energy, but it would effectively separate and sequentially produce about fourteen fractions at a time. In the present paper, the probable operational procedures and the design have been discussed in detail for the various mining companies to assess its economic feasibility. If it could be fabricated, it would have a worldwide market The concept has been patented in author?s name in India.

Traditional interpretations of vein ore deposits in the Coeur d' Alene Mining District, such as the view that these deposits formed in a transcurrent tectonic regime during the Precambrian, are being supplanted by the view that the deposits (1) formed in low-grade metamorphic shear zones similar to those that host an important type of gold deposit, (2) display features, such as wall rock carbonate zoning and vein zoning, that are common to ore deposits elsewhere, and (3) are probably Mesozoic and possibly related to emplacement of the Idaho batholith. In recent years, new interpretations have led to major ore discoveries that are likely to extend the life of the district for decades.

What is required for the mining industry to grow and prosper in a politically challenging world? The answer to this can be summarized as “the industry’s three priorities.” The first priority is gaining access to the world’s mineralized jurisdictions. The second is establishing a measure of security and predictability in government treatment of mining. Confidence in the stability of the fiscal and legal framework within which mining operates is necessary to encourage the investment of large amounts of capital in mine development. The third priority is sustaining the industry’s welcome during the long term in those jurisdictions worthy of investment.

The concept of initiating a large action-oriented contract, directed toward inherently safe mining systems, was conceived by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in January 1970. At that time we were in the process of establishing research contracts and grants, about 100 of which were let in FY 71 to deal individually with fairly specific technological areas. These projects in the aggregate covered a wide spectrum of health and safety problems. What appeared to be necessary was the creation of a project or program that would provide a focal point for the demonstration of many of the results of this research and also in the action sense culminate with working hardware and systems that could be tested and demonstrated over a fairly long teen. The concept of working demonstrable systems, rather than just a conceptual study, was, felt to be necessary for two significant reasons. In the development of any new system, the translation from concept to working hardware is usually a costly and time consuming process which acts as a deterrent to implementation. Secondly, many decisions in the mining community to change equipment or systems ,are based on first hand observation of the new system, in operational practice, an attitude which is certainly understandable in view of the high capital costs of equipment. The objective of this paper is to analyze the evolution of the strategic drivers of the mining sec-tor over the last half century, which has been guided by a varying and expanding list of motivations. While companies cannot survive for long unless they are making profits, the strategic drivers of the industry have gone far beyond profits since at least the mid-1970s when environmental concerns began to be taken seriously. For the most part, these forces have followed global trends and public opinion, but they have been shaped and magnified by the significant, often dominant role that the mining sector plays in many economies. While the mining sector used to be primarily motivated by the first pillar of sustainable development -i.e. the economics pillar-, in the 1970s the second environmental pillar became an important factor in decision making, and in the 1990s the third social pillar emerged as a major driver.1 The entrance of new strategic drivers has also had considerable impact on technological and organizational developments in the mining industry; however, technological changes, driven by cost reduction considerations, have in turn impacted the strategic drivers of the industry, resulting in the need for further technological and organizational developments.

Resin-grouted bolts serve as a crucial means of stabilizing yielded coal ribs in underground coal mines. A comprehensive investigation into their efficacy was undertaken by a collaborative effort between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST). This study involved pull-out tests in multiple locations, including six coal mines and the NIOSH research mine. A total of seventy-three (73) tests were conducted, of wide range of anchorage lengths, ranging from a short encapsulation length of 0.305 m to a fully grouted encapsulation length of 1.524 m. The test findings indicate that when short encapsulation bolts are installed at high rotation speeds, their anchorage capacity is significantly reduced, leading to failure at the bolt-grout interface. Conversely, when these bolts are installed at lower rotation speeds, they exhibit greater capacity, with failure occurring at a higher anchorage load equivalent to the yield load of steel rebar. No matter what the rotational speeds were used during bolt installation in this study, the fully grouted bolts consistently experienced failure at the ultimate load of the steel rebar. Most of the tests carried out on partially grouted bolts with anchorage lengths of 0.610 - 0.914 m have shown behavior patterns like the fully grouted bolts, although exhibiting reduced stiffness. The outcomes of this research offer a profound insight into the ways in which resin-grouted bolts enhance the stability of coal mine ribs.

Water-swellable layered silicates, namely, the smectite clays can remove suspended materials (called herein as debris) and metal ions from aqueous streams. The present study shows that the flocculating and metal extracting abilities of smectite clay-based flocculants can be enhanced when these clays are used in conjunction with a specific anionic polymer. Such performance enhancement is attributed to the following: i) the clay-dispersing ability of the polymeric additive, that would translate into an increase in the clay-surface area available for the attachment of the debris particles onto the clay particles; ii) the possibility of dispersant-to-coagulant transition of the polymer during the later instants of the treatment process, as a result of reduction in solvency of the wastewater for the polymer due to the release of cationic species from the clay-based flocculant solids; iii) metal-complexing ability and adsorption properties of the polymer.

Heightened environmental consciousness has resulted in the development of various international accords dealing with natural resource management. This international awareness is now being translated into regional and local initiatives that proactively implement collaborative environmental management programs. One such program was recently initiated in northern Chile in recognition of the interconnection of Andean salars. Cooperative efforts between industry, governmental agencies and academic professionals have resulted in the implementation of simultaneous environmental monitoring of flora and fauna in the salars of northern Chile. This coordinated effort is leading to an improved understanding of the migratory patterns of South American fauna, as well as improved access to an expanded database for the multiple user groups associated with the Andean salars. The El Abra Mine is actively participating in these coordinated monitoring efforts.

The Rapidex continuous drill and blast tunneling concept utilizes a unique spiral blasting pattern that permits efficient performance with relatively small single shots, while at the same time directing major blast fragments at right angles to the tunnel axis. The concept's self-shielding geometry permits the design of a lightly shielded machine that can stay at the tunnel face firing frequent small blasts to provide rapid, virtually continuous advance. This paper describes Phase III of the development program (supported under Bureau of Mines contract H0252047) in which the "front end" of the machine?drilling loading, and shooting components, together with the shield--was fabricated and field tested underground at the White Pine Copper mine, Michigan. One of the major accomplishments of the Phase III effort was to develop a fully remote controlled loading and initiation system in which explosive slurry is pushed, through a hose into the blasthole by a small water-driven piston carrying the blasting cap. The cap is ignited via an induction coil just prior to entry into the borehole, after which a delay permits complete -withdrawal and shielding of the loading hose. The ultimate objective of the present Bureau-sponsored program is to evaluate the feasibility of mechanizing hard rock mining operations, such as development to a point where drilling, loading, shooting, and mucking can proceed simultaneously and result in increased productivity.

This study focuses on the environmental characterization and assessment of long-term neutral mine drainage (CND) potential from waste rock piles at the abandoned Erdouz mine in Morocco. The study involved metallographic analysis, static tests, and column tests. Results indicate that the waste rock is not an acid mine drainage generator but produces CND, mainly with sulfates exceeding Moroccan standards. The waste rock is relatively stable and could be reused after pretreatment.

Crushers are designed and manufactured to survive the severe duty of mining environments worldwide. Under these conditions the crusher performance and availability is one of the critical factors in the mine?s production and profitability. Traditionally the development of these machines tends to be experience-based, incremental improvements in design due to challenges of different applications, duty, or manufacturing. In order to better serve the mining industry a new approach was taken to the design of primary crushers. This approach was to focus on safety and maintenance activities. The result of this effort is a new generation of gyratory crushers that can be serviced from above. Using the features of this new generation of crushers to their fullest extent crushing installations have improved safety, reduced design and construction costs, and lowered maintenance requirements. This presentation explores the benefits of two crusher installations utilizing top service crushers.

For several decades, the minerals industry has used leaching techniques to extract metals from rocks whose grade was too low to be treated profitably using conventional metallurgical techniques, and, as of 1972, about 15% of domestic copper production was derived using leaching methods (Beall 1). Increasing interest is currently being directed toward solution mining, particularly with respect to copper, for basically two reasons. In the first place, geological exploration has outlined several copper deposits of large tonnage and 1m', grade which are buried at sufficient depth to preclude open-pit mining which would make such mineral deposits ore deposits. Nevertheless, these occurrences provide significant potential if they could be treated by chemical leaching in situ. Secondly, the porphyry deposits of the western united States, which provide by far the largest percentage of domestic copper, do not terminate geometrically with sharp borders. These large disseminated bodies commonly decrease in grade laterally away from volumes of rock containing ore grade metallization, and the distinction between ore and waste is strictly economic. In order to extract ore grade material from the ground, a significant amount of rock containing sub-ore-grade copper must also be removed which, when placed on dumps, is amenable to solution mining. These two considerations clearly indicate the reasons for the growing interest in solution , leaching techniques--namely the ability to exploit deeply buried low grade deposits and the expansion of reserves in deposits currently under production.

Mine production crews and drill-and-blast crews may be exposed to unexpected movement of ground when working under pit slopes. Without specialist geotechnical advice and appropriate measurement systems, mine crews are faced with conducting risk assessments and relying on subsequent controls that may or may not be adequate to ensure their safety. Mine crews need an ?early warning? monitoring system to give them the confidence that they will have time to walk out of the danger zone if the pit slope begins to move. Slope stability radar technology is used by mine geotechnical engineers to assess overall slope stability over an extended period, typically days or weeks, and to critically monitor slopes that are actively moving and may become unsafe. The complexity of slope stability radar allows for geotechnical engineers to assess movement types and movement rates across multiple work areas of a mine from long ranges, with alarm capability to a central location. However there are many mine work areas where production and drill-and blast crews are not adequately covered or alarmed by slope stability radar systems. What is required is an easy-to-use, short-range, fast-scanning tool that can be operated directly by a work crew and can provide a local alarm with sufficient warning when a wall movement occurs within the work area. The Work Area Monitor (WAM) concept has been developed specifically to be operated by a mine production crew. The system comprises a sensitive, fast-scanning radar coupled with a high-resolution camera, built into a mine-standard light vehicle. The system has been designed specifically for ease of use with the output being a local area alarm to warn workers of slope movement in their vicinity, as opposed to the broader pit monitoring and long-term deformation measurements of the known slope stability radar systems.

Principles of Green Chemistry provide useful guidance for sustainable mineral process development. Laboratory bench scale testing was carried out using pregnant cyanide leach solutions, and a number of commercially available mercury precipitation reagents were compared using jar testing to determine the most efficient and selective reagents for mercury precipitation. The most efficient reagent identified was sodium polymeric thiocarbonate (NaPTC).Coagulation experiments with fine diatomaceous earth resulted in a stable precipitate, with good settling properties. On line monitoring of the mercury in solution is recommended for process implementation to conserve reagent removing approximately 90-95% of the mercury with minimal silver and negligible gold losses.

Peru is a mineral hot spot in the world today. Newmont is in the exploratory phase of this mining cycle, a phase full of optimism and expectations. But exploration is high risk. There will be successes but also failures. Many foreign companies will come and go. But it is the responsibility of the mining industry leadership of Peru and the government to continue to foster an environment conducive to investment. This is the time of year companies begin planning their next annual report. Last year, Newmont’s was called “new horizons.” It highlighted the company’s global expansion into Peru, Uzbekistan and Indonesia. Now, projects that were only on the horizon a year ago are moving into production. So “turning opportunity into gold” may be this year’s theme.
