"INTRODUCTION This report summarizes a research about mines which are transitioning from surface to underground mines. It is a guide to make strategic decision in these increasing amount of mines. Capital and operating costs are linked with major strategic decisions in the exploitation of an ore body. This is the reason to analyze costs related to this transitioning world trend. There are multiple reasons for transitioning from Open-Pit (OP) to Underground (UG) mining. The primary economic incentive for going UG is that the cost per unit of ore from OP mining eventually exceeds that from UG extraction. This is due to the excessive amount of waste that must be extracted when the depth of the pit increases. In addition, the reduced footprint of UG operations contributes to diminish the environmental impact on the surface. Furthermore, it becomes more difficult to find new, easily accessible ore deposits. Then, a cost model helps to guide strategic decisions in the transition from OP-to-UG mines. Objectives • Propose a methodology to guide strategic decisions in the transition from OP to UG mining. • Create an integrated cost model based on existing OP and UG individual cases. • Identify and characterize a group of mines transitioning from OP to UG. • Analyze operating and capital costs of a particular transitioning from OP to UG mine. MAIN CONCEPTS Open Pit Mining (OP) The main decisions in OP mines are: Cut-off grade, Stripping Ratio (SR), equipment size, stockpiling, pushback sequencing and processing capacity. The stripping ratio is measured as the tonnage of waste required to be removed to reach and extract one tonne of ore. The material extracted from an OP exploitation can be classified as waste and ore. This classification depends on the cut-off grade. The cut-off grade indicates the minimum amount of material with economic value in a block. The waste from the mine is going to the waste dump and the ore is going to stockpiles where will be store and then going to the processing plant (leaching or concentrator). The waste of this process is going to the tailing pond big pools. And the product is sell in the market. Another important issue is the mining capacity which is going to define the investment in mining equipment. Underground Mining (UG) The first decision to be made in order to open an underground mine is selecting the mining method. Caving methods are the more productive and have lower operating costs. There are three caving methods: Block Caving (BC), Panel Caving (BC) and Sublevel Caving (BC). The access development could be an horizontal adit or a straight or downspiral decline. A shaft could be used for inclined or vertical access. Other key issues are: equipment capacity, cut-off grade and production sequencing."

As openpit copper operations transition from surface mines to underground, the speed of underground infrastructure construction prior to production is critical for maximizing the value of the project. Typically, the preferred underground bulk mining method is block caving. In preparation for future underground projects, Rio Tinto made the strategic decision to invest in a step-change program that would develop system solutions to reduce the construction time of block caves. The program focused on improving safety and doubling or more the construction speed of both vertical shafts and horizontal infrastructure compared to existing drill-and-blast rates. After an extensive selection process, Rio Tinto selected the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine as one of the concepts to proceed with for construction of horizontal infrastructure for access and footprint. In addition to un-derground drilling and hauling equipment, Atlas Copco?s Robbins mobile miner concept (a previous attempt at horizontal mechanical excavation) completed trials at Mount Isa, Pasminco and Taisei. Rio Tinto selected the new Atlas Copco mobile miner machine concept for a number of reasons including the use of proven technology from the three previous mobile miner machines and other commercial products, as well as the ability to install complete ground support typical with high rock stress conditions at approximately 1,500 to 2,000 m (4,900 to 6,500 ft) depth. Atlas Copco, with support from Rowa, the Swiss company that specializes in back up systems for tunnel boring machines (TBM), is advancing the detail design of the access version of a tunneling system on behalf of Rio Tinto. Because of the different requirements between an excavation system for access tunnels and that for tunnels on the footprint, two different versions of the mobile miner machine technology were envisioned. The access and the footprint versions of the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine share a majority of key technologies and systems. Therefore, it was possible to conduct a performance conformation test using a full-scale version of the access machine that would also mitigate the technical risks for the footprint version. Sufco coal mine, a subsidiary of Arch Western Bituminous Group, recently purchased a reverse osmosis (RO) system. The systems intent was to remove impurities in the water being mixed with the hydraulic oil to maintain the viability of critical longwall hydraulic systems and to prevent degradation. This project not only ensured hydraulic components from corrosion, but also revealed a cost savings by reducing the percentage of hydraulic oil mixed with the RO water. SUFCO WATER TREATMENT HISTORY Sufco coal mine has been in operation for approximately 70 years. Old works extend up to 15 miles one way, not including adjacent mined out longwall panels. Due to the geologic conditions and strata, water treatment has been as simple as putting water in at a high point of a mined out area and recovering it at a low point to discharge. Doing this reduces the total suspended solids (TSS) to less than 25 parts per million (ppm) and the total dissolved solids (TDS) less than 1,200 ppm which complies with Sufco?s water discharge permit. Even though the requirements for the permit were met, the water is still corrosive in nature. A portion of this water is piped back into the fireline (makeup) water system. It is then boosted to pressures of up to 500 psi to support mining sections, belt systems, equipment, fire fighting systems and the longwall.

Gold Fields Operating Co.-Chimney Creek has conducted numerous ore reserve modeling studies In order to optimize the estimates of the gold grades and tonnage distributions. Improved models continue to be produced for the major pits which Increase confidence levels required by Gold Fields management and provide the basis for more accurate long and intermediate term mine planning. Various kriging and non-kriging estimation techniques are used at Gold Fields -Chimney Creek Mine. This paper reviews the modeling histories and, current procedures used to construct these models with particular emphasis on the North Pit deposit.

The volume of data produced by operating mines has increased substantially over the last 10 years. However, the volume of data and analytical capability has been negatively correlated to equipment productivity for at least the last seven years. In simple terms, as the volume of data has increased equipment performance has declined. Table (2010) tells us that ?The calamity of the information age is that the toxicity of data increases much faster than its benefits?. More data does not guarantee improving productivity; but more data is also not the cause of declining productivity. Similarly, when equipment performance does start to improve, (it must ? there really is no option if mines want to remain competitive), it will not be the data nor analytics which causes it; it will be the people using the resources at their disposal; including the data. Data and analytics can help if the toxicity of the data can be managed. The simplest form of business improvement using data is benchmarking. The objective of benchmarking is to understand and evaluate the current position of a process in relation to ?best practice? and to identify areas and means of performance improvement. The application of benchmarking involves four key steps: (1) Analyze and understand in detail existing processes; (2) Analyze and understand the processes of others; (3) Compare your own performance with that of the others analyzed; and (4) Design and implement the changes necessary to close the performance gap(s). There are however, many in the mining industries who have shunned equipment benchmarking because they believe that, ?every mine is a pilot?. In other words, the differences between mine operations make comparisons between them of little value. This paper will present a valid approach to benchmarking equipment performance and reliability, accounting for the differences and similarities between operations, producing a result which can be used to add value to mines around the world.

In this paper, an innovative approach was adopted to automatically calculate the effects of tunnel induced settlement on buildings and utilities. The approach resulted in increased output quality, consistency, reduced time, cost savings and a greater ability to respond quickly to design changes. The techniques described have been applied to the Fairbank Silverthorn Storm Trunk Sewer System project, located within the City of Toronto. The automation allowed a very large area of topography, tunnels (6 km), buildings (9000) and utilities (over 1000) to be rapidly evaluated. Visualization of the settlements and impacts also allowed the project design team to optimize the system design to mitigate the settlement impacts.

Silver paste including nano sized particles maintains conductivity in high temperatures without forming oxide layers. In the industry, printing process produces wasted silver paste inside the cylinder and on silk-screen. Pyrometallugical silver recycling methods have environmental problems and do not extract pure silver after removing polymer and organic materials during the extraction process. In this study a simple wet process, of recycling the waste silver paste, using ammonia, was conducted. Silver ion extraction yield was increased using oxidant in the ammonia solution. Possible extraction yields, such as pH, concentration, temperature of ammonia, oxidant concentration and the extraction time. The particles that were obtained after the extraction process will be used as porous hydrophobic catalytic and applied to AI mask and hydrophobic ink. To promote the safety and health of U.S. mineworkers, researchers with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are currently involved in gathering additional field data from the nation’s underground coal mines. The purpose of this field study was to monitor ground movement and changes in pressure during mining where conditions include a thick parting in the coal seam. To accomplish this, three arrays of field instrumentation were installed in the wraparound bleeder of a room-and-pillar panel at the Maple Eagle mine located in southern West Virginia. Borehole pressure cells (BPCs) were used to monitor the change in pressure in pillars located adjacent to the gob. Roof extensometers were installed to measure roof sag at various horizons in the immediate roof, while rib extensometers were installed to measure displacement of the in-seam parting as mining progressed. Additionally, visual observations and manual measurements were taken during subsequent site visits. The repeatability of results, important from a scientific perspective, was accomplished by successfully obtaining field measurements from two nearly identical instrumentation sites. The data collected indicated that the front abutment extent at the edge of the panel was approximately 200 ft, corresponding to a distance of 9– 10 times the square root of the depth. Yielding of the slabbed pillar began when the pillar line was approximately 290 ft outby the instrumentation sites. This was followed by load shedding onto the abutments and the measurement of small amounts of roof sag in the No. 1 entry. Instrumentation data, as presented in this paper, can be used to better understand stress redistribution, pillar performance, and roof/rib displacements. Additionally, this data is suitable for assisting in the calibration of numerical models. Insight gained from applying these models can be used to make better engineering-based judgments for conditions that could potentially be encountered in the future.

Each year, haul truck accidents account for a large portion of mining injuries and fatalities. To better understand why these accidents continue to occur, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) utilized a cognitive task analysis methodology to identify the user requirements of surface haul truck operators and assess differences in perceptions between operators, managers, health and safety professionals, trainers, and maintenance personnel. Additionally, researchers used the critical decision method to focus on better understanding the cognitive demands, decision-making, and problem solving during nonroutine incidents. The preliminary results of this study identify and explore themes within the broad categories of hazards, skills & expertise, and training and provide detailed accounts of nonroutine incidents such as near-misses, loss of control, and collisions. These accounts reveal insights into operator decision making and event progressions that can then be used to build more realistic training scenarios and address hidden hazards and root causes of these incidents. These results, along with potential solutions offered by study participants, can inform future research and help identify creative interventions that can be used by mine operators to address haul truck safety issues

The study aims to evaluate the pillar behavior during the depillaring operation by continuous miner (CM) technology. A panel with five headings developed as per the coal mine regulation of Indian coal mines [2] has been selected for the study. The depillaring operation has been carried out using CM technology after widening and heightening the original entries. An extensive field investigation has been carried out throughout the depillaring operation to access the mining conditions. Depillaring operation has been performed smoothly up to the middle of the panel (fourth row out of eight rows of four pillars each). Advanced blinking of the auto warning tell-tale (AWTT ) has also been observed on some of the instruments during the splitting of pillar no. 18. The panel shows extremely difficult mining conditions at this stage. The case has been numerically simulated using three-dimensional numerical techniques. The simulation result has indicated the high stress and yield condition on the working and the barrier pillar (surrounding goaf from both sides) after the extraction of pillar no. 18. The analysis has also indicated the marginal stability of the 2nd barrier pillar (namely “pillar B”). The failure of the barrier pillar could be the responsible for global instability of the panel as observed in the field. Understanding the importance of the barrier pillars, panel design has been modified by incorporating an additional row of barrier pillars. The stability of the modified panel has been evaluated. Both working and barrier pillars have been observed stable in the modified panel. This could be an alternative layout considering safety at the working face.

Mineral exploration is a critical step for success in mining. However, small-scale mining often ignores exploration best practices. This paper introduces the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. This matrix, which measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small deposits with industry best practices, has been applied to three small mining projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the Amazon, a small-scale manganese mining venture in the Northeast, and a small manganese deposit in the Southeast. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that reflect the actual level of maturity of the mineral exploration program in each project. Therefore, the matrix has shown potential to be an effective tool for assessment of the geological uncertainty remaining in small-scale mineral projects, as well as to identify priority exploration activities for reduction of risks associated with the geological uncertainty. As a risk assessment tool, the TichauerDeTomi Matrix may be helpful in promoting investment and sustained development in and around small mines.

Ion exchangers can be naturally occurring or synthetic; the majority of ion exchange materials in use today are synthetic resins based upon organic polymers such as polystyrene or methacrylate. Into more modern times the use of ion exchange for metal recovery was first proposed for the recovery of gold using zeolites in 1909.4 In 1939 copper was being recovered from the manufacturing of Rayon using ion exchange5 a development that continued applicability through to current times in the production/recovery of copper and nickel in ammoniacal leach processes. In early 1949 researchers at the Rohm & Haas Company discovered that hexavalent uranium existed as an ionic complex in sulfuric acid leach liquors, and that quaternary ammonium anion exchange resins exhibited a high selectivity for this ionic species6 The first commercial application of this technology went on-stream in October 1952 at the West Rand Consolidated Mines, Ltd operation in South Africa. 7 Ion Exchange has been applied for the recovery and purification of a range of metals;8 ? Primary economical deposits of rare-earth elements (REEs) are exhausting all over the world, and it has become necessary to find new sources and methods for their extraction. In addition, increasing the application of REEs in modern technological society has increased its demand globally. One of the important movements to compensate for the future shortages of critical metals is the recovery of REEs from recyclable materials. This paper presents a review of the classification and extraction methods, as well as general applications of REEs with emphasis on secondary sources such as coal and coal byproducts, iron ore tailings, apatite, and phosphate byproducts. An overview of the current state of knowledge on the various methods of REE beneficiation and extraction is covered. These methods include physical separation, as well as hydrometallurgical and bio-hydrometallurgical techniques. The application of these REE extraction techniques for enhanced recovery has been driven primarily by the unique industrial application of these important elements. This paper further explores the existing and potential environmental challenges associated with REE extraction. The authors have presented a wide array of literature, in-depth discussion of the subject, and a succinct summary of processes and relevant case studies.

Engineers at a West Virginia coal preparation plant owned by one of the nation's largest coal producers sought a fire suppression system for the plant's MCC and cable spreading rooms. Officials considered the traditional options of water-based sprinklers, dry chemical, and clean agent systems; however, each of those options presented challenges. Sprinklers can damage electrical equipment, proper delivery of the agent and adequate coverage/protection can be an issue with dry chemical systems, and clean agent systems require room integrity. An alternative to traditional systems was discovered in the Victaulic Vortex Fire Suppression System. The first hybrid inert gas/water mist system (FM 5580), Vortex adequately addressed these concerns. The system, which deploys a high-velocity, low-pressure mixture of water and nitrogen, is not damaging to electrical equipment and extinguishes fires in open, ventilated areas. This is one of the first installations of the Vortex system in a prep plant, and is a compelling example of how new technology can overcome the challenges of traditional technologies. The paper will detail plant specs, situation, and system evaluation, selection, and configuration.

The ground control aspects and occupational safety concerns of extended depth-of-cut mining are presented in this U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report. The scope of extended cut use and typical face operations while extracting extended cuts is reported. A comparative review of roof fall fatalities and a statistical analysis of accidents and injuries for both extended and nonextended cut mining is included. The views and opinions on extended cutting from a series of interviews with mine workers in five states are summarized. In addition, some of the problems and safety concerns of this extraction system are mentioned.

Newmont has been producing gold from the Carlin Trend for over 45 years. Naturally the focus, scale and complexity of the operations have changed considerably over this time. Newmont discovered and developed the Carlin Main ore body which is located about 32 km (20 miles) north of Carlin Nevada. The property was developed as a one mine one gold mill treatment plant operation which produced about 6,200 kg (200,000 Troy ounces) of dorè gold bars per year. The initial mine, mill and gold refining facilities were relatively small in comparison to today?s standards. The milling circuit used the Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation process to recover dissolved gold and prepare a concentrated precious metal ?precipitate? to be melted into a dorè bar for sale.

FirstMiss Gold installed a supervisory control system based on Pavilion Technology's Process Insights neural network software and Oil System's PI data historian. The primary goal of the system was to control the acid preconditioning circuit. However, our first successful control loop was on the limestone feed rate to the neutralization circuit. The information gained by modeling these circuits and the better control provided by the system has resulted in reagent savings of over $80,000 per month.

The Arkansas Novaculite of Devonian and Mississippian age is the most distinctive formation in the central Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas from the standpoint of both topography and lithology. The formation typically forms precipitous, narrow ridges (hogbacks) which reflect the steepness of dip and the resistance and thickness of the rock units. The Arkansas Novaculite varies from less than 200 feet thick in the north to locally over 800 feet thick in the south and outcrops over an east-west distance of 360 km (200 miles) in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Most of the rocks of the formation are highly siliceous with novaculite predominating, and lesser quantities of chert, siliceous shale, conglomerate and rarely sandstone. Novaculite is commonly defined as a homogeneous mostly white rock, translucent on thin edges with a dull to waxy luster and composed almost entirely of microcrystalline quartz. The word novaculite comes from the Latin word novacula, meaning razor hone. This term was first used by Richard Kirwan in his mineralogy text of 1784. The origin of novaculite remains controversial but we believe it was a primary silica derived mostly from the alteration of submarine volcanic-rich materials, with numerous fine biogenic components and some minor clastics (derived mostly from foreland facies via turbidity currents) and deposited as an amorphous siliceous ooze in the deep Ouachita trough. It was subsequently converted to microcrystalline quartz during diagenesis by the compaction of the overlying rocks and the intense Late Paleozoic Ouachita Mountain tectonism. In the central and southern portions of the region three divisions of the formation have been defined: a Lower Division predominantly of light-colored novaculite; a Middle Division of interbedded dark chert and shale; and an Upper Division of massive often calcareous novaculite. In the northern exposures the formation is thinner and contains more black chert and shale, chert-shale conglom¬erate, sandstone and less novaculite. The massive novaculite of the Upper and Lower Divisions is a source of high purity silica (99+%). Indians were the first to use novaculite. They made their various tools and hunting implements from the weathered broken rock until they learned the quarrying techniques. The first white men in the area recognized the use of novaculite for sharpening their tools and knives: previously whetstones were obtained in small quantities from Europe. To this day whetstone is quarried mostly in areas which the Indians and possibly the Spanish previously worked. Some of the current mining practices have changed very little from those of the early quarryman. In areas where the novaculite of the Upper Division is poorly cemented, this friable tripolitic material has found applications in such uses as an abrasive, as a filler or extender in paints, plastics and other purposes. Some of the dense novaculite is suitable as a filler in fire bricks and also in plastics. Because some of it has the tendency to decrepitate when heated not all novaculite can be used for these applications. Several quarry operators are crushing novaculite for road, concrete, and other aggregate. This use was formerly rather limited due to the abrasiveness of the novaculite on crushing and screening equipment. Further potential uses of novaculite are speculative but include application of high purity silica in the production of silicon metal for solar cells, seed or "growing", and fusing quartz for electronics.

Introduction The Cannon mine at Wenatchee, WA has recently been brought into operation to recover gold from the sandstones of the Swauk formation. The mine is a joint venture between Asamera Minerals (US) Inc. and Breakwater Resources. A tailings impoundment was constructed to impound 2.7 to 3.6 Mt (3 to 4 million st) of tailings at 1.8 kt/a (2000 stpd) over about five years. This paper describes the design and construction of the impoundment. In particular, it describes the 100 m (300 ft) high earthfill embankment that is the main feature of the facility. Project environment The project is located on the outskirts of Wenatchee, a town of about 40,000 people. The town is situated on the flat alluvial terraces beside the Columbia River. The Cascade Mountains rise from the terraces in a series of ridges and valleys. The mine is at the foot of the Cascades. The tailings impoundment is in one of the steep valleys. The climate is mild and dry (Table 1). Site selection Twelve alternative sites within a 16-km (10-mile) radius of the mine were examined. Decision making theory was used to select the most suitable site. Advantages of the chosen site include its proximity to the mine and its low visibility from points of common public access. Also, the area was already heavily impacted by an existing silica quarry. The major disadvantage of the site is the need to pump tailings over a distance of 1.5 km (1 mile) and against a static head of 200 m (655 ft). Also, it is located in a gulch just upstream from the town of Wenatchee. Site geology The impoundment is generally underlain by interbedded sandstones and siltstones. The siltstones are often shattered. The sandstones are often friable. Both rock types are extensively jointed. Some isolated faulting of the sediments occurred before the area was covered with basalt flows. About 10,000 years ago, at the end of the ice age, the basalts were covered by 3 to 10 m (10 to 33 ft) of wind blown loess - a fine sandy clay and silt. River deposits filled the base of the valley to depths between 5 and 25 m (16 and 82 ft). Under the main part of the embankment, these materials were removed to expose bedrock. Ground water flow is generally through the more permeable layers. The permanent water table is about 5 m (16 ft) beneath the ground surface. The Burnaby Mountain Tunnel was an integral part of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project. General Contractor, Kiewit Ledcor TMEP Partnership (KLTP), contracted with McNally Construction to build an underground tunnel between the Burnaby and Westridge Marine terminals under Burnaby Mountain. The pipeline was constructed within a 2.6-kilometre tunnel, eliminating the need to run the pipeline over the mountain and minimizing community impacts. The complexities of this Project led to multiple innovations, including the design of a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) capable of excavating through mixed-faced conditions concurrently thus allowing the Project team to complete the tunnel with limited geotechnical information.
