Two of the most important issues mines have to deal with are tracking the ore mined from pit to plant and to test the efficiency of beneficiation equipment. Kumba Resources and Saco Systems are working together at moment to develop a RFID tracer system to help address these issues. This paper will focus on the tracking of ore from pit to plant. The main advantages for ore tracking is to ensure plant feed blending and dilution according to plan. The RFID tracer system works on the basis of a tracer that physically simulates the ore properties and radio frequency technology that facilitates communication with the tracer and allowing information to be stored on the tracer. This paper tends to indicate the progress on the application of RFID tracer technology in the minerals processing environment as tested at Kumba Resources so far. It is concluded that the system has great potential, but some important problems remain

The scheduled power cuts of early 2008 were a disturbing reminder that South Africa needs to expand its power-generating capacity. Low-grade and discard coals, of which South Africa has much, are a source of energy and amenable to combustion in circulating fluidized beds (CFBs). Foster Wheeler (FW) has a long record in developing this technology in boilers. The technology is flexible in burning a variety of fuels; low-grade, high-ash coals, good quality bituminous and anthracite coals, and biomass and waste fuels have all been used. CFB boilers are efficient, reliable and can be designed to meet tight emission standards. In recent years once-through supercritical (OTSC) CFB technology has been developed. It enables the next stage in CFB development to proceed to a medium-scale (500 MWe) utility in such projects as Lagisza, which runs at a net efficiency of nearly 44%. Scaling the technology up to 800 MWe with a net efficiency of>45% is planned to be commercial during 2009. CFB technology can reduce CO2 emissions in the repowering of coal-fired and greenfield power plants. It does so through greater efficiencies and by co-combusting coal with biomass. FW has also developed CFB technology for the gasification of biomass, as, for example, in a pressurized gasifier to produce syngas, which can be used for the production of biodiesel, thereby reducing CO2 emissions from vehicles. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) can potentially cut CO2 emissions in the generation of power from fossil fuels in the short term, provided that it gains public acceptance, that the required regulatory framework is created, and that emission-trading mechanisms or other incentives provide a solid return on the major investments required. Oxyfuel combustion is an option in CCS; Foster Wheeler is adapting its CFB combustion technology for oxy-fuel combustion to meet this challenge. It is developing Flexi-burn?, which enables a plant to be operated either with or without carbon capture. This paper describes the status of CFB technology in terms of boiler efficiency and fuel flexibility. It highlights the advantages of CFB technology for oxyfuel combustion, presents a development plan for Flexi-burn?, and discusses a pressurized gasifier for biodiesel applications.

Reagents are added to the flotation process of Merensky Reef ores to achieve specific functions that enable the separation of valuable minerals from gangue minerals on the basis of the difference in their surface properties. However, due to the complexity of the process, the various interactions that occur as well as the incomplete liberation of the ore and range of minerals present, it is difficult to quantify the behaviour of each of the reagents. More specifically, changes made to achieve a particular outcome may have secondary effects that can override the desired effect. If all the effects and interactions can be accounted for, it is possible to manipulate reagent suites and obtain better overall metallurgical performance. This paper discusses the effect of the addition of copper sulphate at different operating points of the recovery of the sulphide minerals. Batch flotation tests indicated that the recovery of chalcopyrite was not affected when operating conditions were varied, whereas pentlandite recovery was strongly affected by the point of reagent addition, and pyrrhotite recovery was enhanced by copper sulphate addition, irrespective of the point of addition, with the extent being dependent on the ore source. Floatable gangue was activated by copper sulphate in the presence of the dithiophosphate collector. Froth stability was also affected by copper sulphate addition.

The high incidence of accidents and fatalities in the South African mining industry, in particular those associated with falls of ground, is often attributed to ineffective and/or inappropriate training methods and material. Recently introduced mine health and safety legislation in South Africa also requires that all mine workers receive appropriate and effective training to enable them to operate safely in their given mining environment. There can, therefore, be no doubt that methods to provide effective training, in particular safety related training, are urgently required in the South African mining industry. In the search for alternative and improved training approaches, attention has fallen on virtual reality (VR) technology as a possible solution. VR has found acceptance in a number of industries as an effective method of training for a variety of work place activities, including those of a safety related nature. VR has successfully been applied in a number of industries to improve the effectiveness of safety and hazard awareness training. The CSIR: Division of Mining Technology (CSIR Miningtek), in conjunction with the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC), therefore evaluated the potential of VR to be used as a training medium in the South African gold and platinum mining industry. Aspects of the evaluation included an assessment of the technical capability of VR to represent a typical underground mining environment with sufficient realism and the relevance of the VR training concept for a largely illiterate workforce. For these purposes, a prototype PC-based VR hazard awareness training simulator has been developed by CSIR Miningtek, and a series of evaluation sessions conducted at a typical deep level gold mine. The conclusion from this evaluation work is that virtual reality technology has the potential to provide effective training systems that are relevant to the South African mining industry. "SynopsisThe relationship between niobium content and austenite grain growth has been investigated through hot rolling simulation on a Bähr dilatometer. The effect of delay time between passes during rough rolling in Nbmicroalloyed steels with nitrogen contents typical for electric arc furnace (EAF) melting was studied. The results indicate that the grain growth constants n, Q, and A increase with an increase in Nb content. The activation energy for austenite grain growth Q was found to be in the range of 239 to 572 kJ/mol, the exponential constant n ranged from 2.8 to 6.2, and the material and processing condition constant A from 4.24 × 1012 to 4.96 × 1028, for steels with niobium contents ranging from 0.002% Nb to 0.1% Nb. A general constitutive equation for the prediction of austenite grain growth in these Nb-microalloyed steels under rough rolling conditions has been developed. Good agreement between the experimental and the predicted values was achieved with this constitutive equation.IntroductionGrain refinement has been found to increase both the strength and toughness of steels (Gao and Baker, 1998; Sharma, Lakshmanan, and Kirkaldy, 1984; Seok et al., 2014; Maalekian et al., 2012). It is also known that the austenite grain size directly influences the microstructure, and thus the mechanical properties, of the steel (Maalekian et al., 2012; Yue et al., 2010). Effective grain growth control is reported to be achieved through addition of precipitate-forming elements, such as Nb that, slow down the grain boundary migration through pinning and solute drag mechanisms (Yu et al., 2010; Olasolo et al., 2011; Alogab et al., 2007). Much work has been carried out on austenite grain lsize control by the addition of precipitate-forming elements that have a strong affinity for interstitial elements, such as carbon and nitrogen, which form the dispersed pinning particles to inhibit the austenite grain growth (Alogab et al. 2007; Hodgson and Gibbs, 1992; Nanba et al., 2003; Flores and Martinez, 1997; Rollett, Srolovitz and Anderson, 1989). Austenite grain growth can be described using a conventional or a modelling approach. With conventional approaches (e.g. metallography), in-situ monitoring of austenite grain growth at high temperatures is impossible. Modelling the grain growth behaviour based on available data is the ideal option. To quantitatively describe austenite grain growth therefore requires development of a sound mathematical austenite grain growth equation that accounts for the effects of the varying microalloying elements in inhibiting austenite grain growth. Numerous attempts have been made to develop an empirical model based on the general equation developed by Sellars and Whiteman (1979). Many of these models do not account for the direct effects of the microalloying elements such as Nb in austenite grain growth control [Fu et al., 2011; Wang and Wang, 2008; Wang et al., 2006; Shanmugama et al., 2005; Banerjee et al., 2010; Pous-Romeroa et al., 2013). The current work has considered this limitation, taking into account the direct effect of niobium in grain growth control during thermal processing. This is done by incorporating the initial austenite grain size Do and the microalloying element niobium in the development of a constitutive equation for grain growth prediction in Nb-containing microalloyed steels."

IMFA Group is the largest producer of Charge chrome not only in India but also in Asia. This Group has plants situated at Therubali and at Choudwar. They also have a Thermal power plant at Choudwar which not only caters to the power requirement of Choudwar plant but also supplies power to Therubali. The plants are fed for Chromite ore through the captive mines namely Nuasahi Chromite mines (40.47 Ha) , Bangur Chromite mines(37.34Ha), Sukinda chromite mines (116.76 Ha), Mahagiri Chromite Mine(73.777 Ha) and Chingudipal Chromite mines (26.62 Ha). Nuasahi Chromite Mine, which is situated in Keonjhar district, is an underground mine and is based upon best technological advancements in the industry. The underground mining operation is certified under ISO-9002, ISO-14001and OHSAS 18001. This not only shows the concern for the quality, environment but also for the health of the employees. The Nuashahi is the first chromite mine to backfill the opencast excavations created during the last 50 years and carry out the production from underground area below the opencast workings. This paper deals with the state of art technology of sub-level open stopping in thin ore bodies. The under-ground mine openings was started in the year 1997. In next four years the production of chromite from underground was started.(2001). At present the mine is in a good shape with several running stopes. Today it is producing around 10,000 Mt per month of chromite. The development of the mine is carried out with an average of 200 mtr per month of tunneling. The mine is having a mechanical ventilator having a capacity of24000 M3 per hour at 50mm water gauge, thus feeding sufficient air for the persons working in underground. The mine is being dewatered through a most modern positive suction sump, having a capacity of 500 cum and operated with 120 HP pumps. After commissioning of this sump in the year 2003, the mine has taken a quantum jump in production with remarkable saving in power consumption.

Published experimental data on thermodynamic behaviour of cobalt-containing slags have been reviewed and used in validating a recently developed thermodynamic model. The results from the exercise show that the model provides a reasonably good description of behaviour of cobalt in multi-component slag systems. The models for cobalt containing slags, matte and oxide solid solution phases were incorporated into CSIRO?s multi-phase equilibrium (MPE) package, which was used to calculate the equilibrium distribution of cobalt between matte and slag phases under various conditions. The results agreed well with the experimental data. Furthermore, the good agreement between the calculation and the plant data indicates that the operating conditions of industrial smelting and converting processes are close to equilibrium. Two diagrams showing the effects of slag chemistry and SO2and O2partial pressures on the distribution of cobalt between phases were generated for conditions similar to smelting and converting processes. These diagrams provide some useful guidelines for developing new strategies to improve cobalt recovery.

Gullies are the vital in-stope excavations that provide access for mining personnel and material to, and mined ore from, the producing faces in the tabular hard rock mines. They pose a serious problem in most mines because they induce stress orientations, which, combined with blast damage, produce adverse rock fracture patterns that contribute to the loss of hangingwall and sidewall integrity. Rock-related injury statistics confirm this by highlighting gullies as the second-highest risk area in South African hard rock mines. Inappropriate gully geometries, poor blasting practice, and non-adherence to accepted standards worsen the problem. The aim of this work is, firstly, to provide guidelines to select the correct gully geometry and appropriate support for a particular geotechnical environment and, secondly, to review the practical issues behind gully safety and stability. In order to meet these aims, this paper reviews the available literature on gullies and their history, and reports on an industry-wide survey of practices and opinions. Then it covers observations from underground visits to 107 gullies situated in the respective geotechnical environments of the Basal Reef, Beatrix Reef, Vaal Reef, Carbon Leader Reef, Ventersdorp Contact Reef, Kimberley Reef, Kalkoenkrans Reef, Merensky Reef, and UG2 Reef. Despite the differing geotechnical conditions and gully geometries, common problems are experienced with geological structure, stress, and fracturing. Results from numerical modelling are also presented to help analyse the underground observations and to quantify the merits of the different gully layouts. It is concluded that there are no new techniques available to improve gully stability, but that significant improvements in safety are attainable by employing the correct gully geometry for the geotechnical environment, good blasting practice, and appropriate support.

Companies have become more responsible, environmentally aware, and have to comply to more stringent environmental limits set by legislation. This paper describes briefly the current best available atmospheric pollution abatement technologies relating to particulates, acid gases, NOx, acid mists, aerosols, mercury, dioxins and furans. Mention is also made as to the best practices for product work-up and waste product disposal.

Black Mountain, a polymetallic base metal mine located in the Northern Cape territory of South Africa has been blessed with high grade economic ore for many years. Now that the Broken Hill orebody is nearing the end of its life, a lower grade orebody (Swartberg) is being exploited to supplement production from Broken Hill. In addition, ore from stopes in the upper levels of the Broken Hill orebody is considerably tarnished (oxidized). As a natural result, the remaining ore contains a higher percentage of magnetite, pyrrhotite and pyrite than in earlier years. Bismuth, cadmium and cobalt also occur in the ore in higher quantities. The life of the mine has been lengthened with the discovery of further deeper-lying ore reserves extending from the Broken Hill orebody suitably called the Deeps section. However, to bridge the gap between development of the new reserve and the exhaustion of the old reserve, these lower grade and tarnished (oxidized) ores have to be treated. The mine has had reasonable success in identifying unfavourable or problematic ore types and stockpiling them separately to blend in small quantities with more favourable ore. Bench and plant scale tests have aided identification of the various ore types and significant improvements in flotation metallurgical results have been seen. Copper, lead and zinc metal occur as sulphides in the ore. The mill consists of a differential and sequential flotation process that extracts copper concentrate, lead concentrate and zinc concentrate respectively with silver metal recovered in the copper and lead concentrates. This paper describes the ore blending strategy employed at the mine to maximize the econo-metallurgical efficiency of the operation.

An extensive laboratory grinding study was carried out on a magnetite ore in order to assess the grinding behaviour of magnetic concentrate and tail from low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS).The test work involved Bond ball mill testing, rod milling, low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS), and batch ball milling down to product sizes of around P80~25 microns. A total of 18 Bond tests and over 150 batch grinding tests and sieve sizing were carried out. Throughout the grinding tests, power draw was continuously monitored. The relationship between the grinding energy and product size was analysed using the conventional energy-size concepts. It was found that the Rittinger equation fits the experimental data well. However, Bond?s equation does not fit the experimental data well, and therefore a modified Bond equation was developed. Differences in grinding properties between the magnetic and non-magnetic component were analysed and compared to the bulk ore. It was found that grinding properties differ significantly and therefore separate grinding test work may be required for each grinding step in the magnetite ore beneficiation flowsheet. The Bushveld Complex is economically significant and strategically important to South Africa, thus it is imperative that optimal extraction of platinum group metal (PGM) resources on the Bushveld Complex is achieved. Optimal extraction broadly requires that the maximum amount of ore is extracted by excavating and hauling the minimum amount of waste in the shortest possible time, at the least cost, and in the safest and most environmentally acceptable manner. In open-pit mine planning this entails among other things, minimizing the waste stripping ratio, whereas in underground mine planning it includes minimizing the metres of waste development. In conventional mining, the main development that is in waste or partly in waste and defines the mining grid pattern includes levels and raises. It was prudent to consider optimizing level and raise spacing in conventional mining because the method is a prevalent mining method on the Bushveld Complex accounting for nearly 70% of platinum production.

3D seismic surveys have become a well-accepted method of imaging sub-surface geology in the Bushveld Basin. Because both the seismic sources and receivers are placed at surface, most surveys are limited to imaging faults with >=7 m throw. However, some areas such as shaft infrastructure can benefit from the ability to detect smaller structures prior to shaft sinking. Borehole radar and logs such as the acoustic televiewer can identify these structures in the shaft barrel, but not within -200 m from the shaft. Therefore, Anglo Platinum has developed the method of high-resolution 3D vertical seismic profiles (VSPs) for structural sterilization of shaft sites prior to shaft sinking. VSPs utilize a surface source and sub-surface receivers deployed down a borehole. This means that seismic energy goes through the near surface only once, and therefore suffers less frequency loss than when both source and receivers are on surface. Furthermore, VSPs can record 3 component (3C) data which comprises P wave, Sh (horizontal) and Sv (vertical) wavemodes. Because S waves travel at about 0.6 of the velocity of a P wave, shorter wavelengths and therefore higher resolutions are possible using S wave data. VSPs were first used in their one dimensional, zero offset, mode to correlate borehole geology with seismic stratigraphy within seismic surveys. This showed that VSPs record -30% higher frequencies than surface seismic surveys. The program then applied two dimensional VSPs to the problem of imaging geological structure close to a borehole. 2D VSPs confirmed that high frequency results could be achieved, and that this enabled a more accurate image of the Merensky Reef than could be achieved by surface seismic data. Finally, the program has achieved the successful recording and processing of 3D VSP data, with both compressional and shear wavemodes giving a high resolution structural result. Although P wave data gives -30% frequency improvement over surface seismic surveys, S wave data can give as much as 80% improvement, further improving the structural image achieved. The high fixed costs of VSP surveys mean that they should ideally be run in multi-client batches, which can reduce the per borehole cost by up to 50%. Their application is anticipated to be on high value capital infrastructure with a geological risk from faults which are not imaged by surface seismics-generally in the sub-7 m range. The development of a resource project inevitably requires the investigation of a vast range of issues across most engineering disciplines - mining, metallurgical, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental - as well as the geosciences. It is also a characteristic feature of the resource industry that no two orebodies - and hence no two development projects - are the same. So these technical issues have to be addressed to a greater or lesser extent in evaluating any resource project's development potential. Not surprisingly then, technical issues tend to predominate when assessing the development potential of a project in the process typically referred to as `doing a feasibility study'. But the principal purpose of a `feasibility study' is to determine whether a development opportunity makes good business sense, not just whether it is technically possible. Resolution of technical issues is often seen as the primary focus of a feasibility study, whereas in reality, these technical issues are the basis upon which an asset delivery and business plan is built. This is not to say that technical issues are unimportant - they are a prerequisite to the demonstration of a project's viability. The feasibility study process must therefore demonstrate that not only have the technical issues been satisfactorily addressed, but also that the broader commercial, economic and social issues have been considered in the development of a comprehensive business plan, which includes an assessment of the risk-reward profile of the proposed development. This paper will present a framework for the conduct of `feasibility studies' and provide guidance to minimum standards and best practice.

Application of magnetic separation was investigated for the enrichment of colemanite ores by removing the magnetic gangue fraction. The detailed XRD analysis of the ore has indicated that the gangue fraction is composed predominantly of the iron-bearing silicates such as smectite and, to a lesser extent, illite. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of the colemanite and gangue samples have proved that colemanite is diamagnetic in character whereas gangue fraction is weakly paramagnetic to allow the removal of this fraction by magnetic separation. Magnetic separation of the crushed and sized ore samples (-5 mm +75 µm) was performed using a high intensity permanent magnetic separator. Under the test conditions a colemanite concentrate (41.29 wt.% B2O3) was found to be produced from the crushed ore (30.76 wt.% B2O3) at a recovery of 96.76%. These findings suggest that magnetic separation has great potential as an alternative process for the production of a concentrate of commercially sufficient grade.

When one looks back and does assessments of what has been the key ingredient in achieving success in our safety efforts, there are many issues that spring to mind and cover a wide array of elements. One does not know which has the ultimate maximum effect. In his presentation yesterday, Alan Peers, our SHEQ leader, covered a lot of detail with the way we are managing safety at Modikwa. I have attempted to identify some of the key essentials in making the mine safe. Passion Safety is addressed with a passion that is unbelievable at times. When I get phoned because an incident has occurred and in reporting the incident, there are already action plans being put in place to prevent re-occurrences, you understand the commitment to put employees? safety first. You hear the disappointment in your subordinates? voices when they have to share the fact that an incident or accident has occurred.

Laboratory-scale tests were conducted at Mintek for the production of titanium powder from particulate Kroll sponge by the hydrogenation-dehydrogenation (HDH) process. The aim of this work was to produce titanium powder for powder metallurgical consolidations. The work involved the production of titanium powder at optimized conditions, which included hydrogenation in a horizontal tube furnace at 600°C for 2 hours, milling using planetary and roller mills, and dehydrogenation in a vacuumed retort fitted in a muffle furnace running at 700°C for 36 hours. The titanium powder produced in this project matched the elemental specifications of commercially available titanium powder, except for high carbon content. Nevertheless, the powder has been tested further in mechanical alloying and has been found suitable for the production of powder metallurgical compacts. In his 1978 monograph ‘Lognormal-de Wijsian Geostatistics for Ore Evaluation’, Professor Danie Krige emphasized the scale-independence of gold and uranium determinations in the Witwatersrand goldfields. It was later established in nonlinear process theory that the original model of de Wijs used by Krige was the earliest example of a multifractal generated by a multiplicative cascade process. Its end product is an assemblage of chemical element concentration values for blocks that are both lognormally distributed and spatially correlated. Variants of de Wijsian geostatistics had already been used by Professor Georges Matheron to explain Krige’s original formula for the relationship between the block variances as well as permanence of frequency distributions for element concentration in blocks of different sizes. Further extensions of this basic approach are concerned with modelling the three-parameter lognormal distribution, the ‘sampling error’, as well as the ‘nugget effect’ and ‘range’ in variogram modelling. This paper is mainly a review of recent multifractal theory, which throws new light on the original findings by Professor Krige on self-similarity of gold and uranium patterns at different scales for blocks of ore by (a) generalizing the original model of de Wijs to account for random cuts; (b) using an accelerated dispersion model to explain the appearance of a third parameter in the lognormal distribution of Witwatersrand gold determinations; and (c) considering that Krige’s sampling error is caused by shape differences between single ore sections and reef areas.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Phd.(Process Engineering) degree Process modelling is an essential element in the development of advanced (model-based) process control systems, accounting for up to 80% of the cost of development. Often, models based on historic process data are the only viable option when dealing with processes that cannot be modeled cost-effectively from first principles. Despite major advances that have recently been made in the field of nonlinear process modeling, some basic idea of the dynamic behaviour of a process system is important prior to system identification. While many process systems seem unlikely to be linear, the possible nonlinear aspects of their dynamics are not necessarily supported by the data. This may have significant implications for subsequent system identification or interpretation of the data. For example, it is quite possible that an underlying nonlinear deterministic signal may be obscured by a high degree of measurement or process noise, to the extent that it may be critical in the choice of model to fit to the data. The method of surrogate data analysis has recently been proposed as a means to classify the underlying dynamics of complex systems, and in this paper the use of Fourier transform surrogates to classify process systems is explored.
