A review of recent work being conducted at the university of British Columbia on the modeling of the microstructural evolution during the hot rolling of steel is presented. A mathematical model of heat transfer was developed to describe the thermal field in a slab during rough and finish rolling. The model for rough rolling, discussed in this review, also simulates the growth of oxide scale on the slab surface. To quantify the heat transferred from the slab to the work rolls, instrumented samples of MSI3O4 L stainless steel, 0,05 per cent carbon steel, and 0,05 per cent carbon steel with 0,025 per cent

Design features of a deep-level shaft by D. H. HILLHOUSE. Pr. Eng.(Visitor)- and G. LANGE. Pr. Eng.(Fellow) Design and technical features of a large, deep shaft are described, and details of the sinking equipment are given. Special features in shaft steelwork, materials handling, and station layouts are described and illustrated. The details of the precast brattice wall are given, together with the reasons for the separation of all steelwork from the brattice wall. A newly developed device for the location of the shaft conveyances while loading or unloading at underground stations is briefly described and illustrated. The paper concludes with a summary showing the rates of progress and costs for the shaft-sinking operation.

Tests were conducted during the middle of this year to evaluate techniques and the equipment used in a novel continuous mining system for use in narrow reef tabular orebodies. Equipment was designed and supplied to test a mechanized drilling rig, a selection of rock breaking techniques and an integrated rock removal system, mounted on a self-advancing reciprocating flight conveyer. As the rock breaking techniques do not depend on the use of large quantities of conventional explosive the systems and equipment employed here have the potential to run continuously for 24hours per day. Whilst the tests carried out use simple prototype equipment employing established technologies, the long-term objective remains the use of sophisticated machinery capable of running continuously and un-manned, only interrupted by brief service intervals. Some aspects of the deformation behaviour and temperature rise during instantaneous compression loading of high purity aluminium By H. J. E. HAMEL The influence of deformation speed on the deformation behaviour of high purity aluminium was investigated. By varying the initial height-to-diameter ratio a considerable influence on the deformation behaviour could be noticed. Lubrication of the specimen end faces was found to have an influence on the flow behaviour and on the roughness of the specimen interface at pressing platens. The results of temperature measurements during deformation agree with work-hardening behaviour of the specimens. Flow curves calculated with the measured temperature rises do not agree with results obtained at lower strains by other workers. The possible reasons are discussed.

Design criteria and recent developments in large-capacity Wemco flotation cells by P. KIND, Ph.D. (Clausthal), B.Sc. (Visitor) The scaling-up of the large flotation cells that have been developed during the past few years has been based on hydrodynamic considerations and has resulted in a 500 ft3 cell unit. Plant results on a porphyry copper ore show that the 500 ft3 unit is equivalent to the previously used 300 ft3 model.. . Plant tests on the use of 300 ft3 flotation cells for the recovery of phosphate, particularly from the coarse size fractions, are also described.

ARNOLDt This paper is the result of an excellent piece of work performed as a service to hyUrometallurgy in general and to the South African uranium industry in particular, and the authors are to be congratulated, Authors' reply Dr Arnold is correct in saying that the present Senbrix resins, which are based on the experimental heavy resins first developed at the National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM), need not necessarily show the same poor performance with respect to cobalt poisoning as the NIM prototypes. A mathematical model has been developed for flotation circuit simulation. This model was designed to investigate the effect of varying the circulating loads and to determine whether an improvement in overall efficiency could be gained by a size separation prior to flotation. Model parameters were obtained by regression to plant data. Highly correlated parameters in the model were combined to reduce the number of parameters so that the need for excessive data gathering was eliminated. Mass balance smoothing was used to obtain a consistent data set for regression. The results of the simulation indicate that for the same grade of concentrate, an increase in copper recovery of 0.6 per cent may be possible by increasing the circulating loads. The results of the simulation also indicated that recleaning of the plus 200-mesh material may be beneficial.

INTRODUCTION What I want to discuss is the future pattern of manpower in the mining industry, and I should like to begin by examining some relevant statistics. There are four areas that must be examined. Firstly, the future rate of production of different minerals must be estimated. Secondly, an assessment must be made of the balance of different mining technologies likely to be used for each mineral. Thirdly, the manpower requirements for each technology must be determined. Methods for the prediction of seepage quality from waste-disposal facilities are evaluated for input to the design of desalination treatment facilities. This is done by reference to a waste dump seeping into a near-surface aquifer, the contaminated seepage being collected by scavenger wells. As the quality of contaminated water intercepted by the wells will vary with both space and time, it is necessary for predictive methods to accommodate such variations. One-dimensional and two-dimensional predictive solute transport models are described and applied to the seepage and scavenger-well example mentioned above. The advantages and disadvantages, interims of overall applicability, data requirements, and possible accuracy, are described and discussed. While one-dimensional models have the advantages of speed, simplicity, and cost, the frequent requirement of prediction in both space and time necessitates more complex, two-dimensional simulation.

A relatively simple rate equation for the kinetics of the absorption of gold from cyanide solutions onto activated carbon was lI5ed as the basis in the development of a model for multistage carbon-in-pulp and carbon-in-Ieach absorption circuits. The model was used in the prediction of both the steady-state and the transient behaviour of the absorption process, and the results were found to be in reasonable agreement with those observed in an extended pilot-plant campaign. A number of practical implications of the model are discussed, and an assessment is made of the economic consequences of the various process options available for the design of a carbon-in-pulp plant.

SYNOPSIS Many tabular mining problems can be modelled effectively by displacement-discontinuity techniques, which can be extended directly to represent fracturing on discrete planes and movements on planes of weakness. This paper presents a unified method for computing the energy changes that occur when multiple discontinuities intersect and are extended incrementally. It shows how this method can be used to deduce energy-release information for standard layout problems and, in addition, how the technique can be incorporated in numerical procedures based on the displacement-discontinuity method. Examples are given to demonstrate the effects of off-reef fracturing and the importance of stope-fault intersections during seismic events.

This paper gives a technical review of the history, occurrence, mining, and metallurgy of iron in South Africa. The reserves of iron ore worldwide and in South Africa are reviewed, and potential new developments In the iron-and-steel industry in South Africa are examined. The paper concludes that the exploitation of lower-grade iron deposits will probably supplement the reserves of high-grade hematite ore in the distant future, and that, accepting this scenario. South Africa will be well placed to provide iron ore for its expected internal steel requirements, as well as supplying quality Iron ore for the export market.

Based on information supplied by South African collieries to the Coal Mining Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines since 1978, the paper outlines the general performance of the continuous miners used and gives the results more-detailed studies of the cutting, loading, and transportation processes. On average, the continuous miners produced coal at a rate of 76 t per operating hour, which, at an average machine availability of 67 per cent, resulted in a production of 51 t per total hour. The cutting rates varied between and 250 t/h but, owing to machine and system inefficiencies, the overall production rate varied between 92 and 48 It is concluded that, if the collieries concentrated on improving their machine utilization procedures and operating practices, they could increase the overall production from their continuous-miner sections.

Blasting in a gold mine has to satisfy the following set of techno economic conditions: good fragmentation, minimum stopped width, minimum number of rock falls, cost effectiveness. Results of a comparative study of the performance of a Low Density Anfo (LDA) and a conventional Anfo (ANFEX) are discussed. LDA appears to be more cost effective. The same borehole volume can be charged with material of reduced specific gravity. The velocity of detonation (VOD) is increased in the case of LDA resulting in more breakage as a result of shock energy than from the energy in the gas phase. This leads to less damage to the excavation and more favourable breakage of the excavated rock. As a result the overall economics of the mining operation is improved.

Opening: On Tuesday, 9th June, The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy held a well-attended Colloquium on Milling at Mintek, Randburg. The meeting opened with a short address by Dr H. Wagner, Director General of the Chamber of Mines Research Organization. In his address, he highlighted the cost of the milling process to the industry. The fact that the industry at home and overseas had, at considerable expense, sent some 270 delegates to the Colloquium demonstrated the industry's concern at the high cost of this process. Clearly, this cost could be reduced only by greater understanding and interchange of information, which was the purpose of meetings such as these. Mine water The Third International Mine Water Congress is to be held in Melbourne from 23rd to 28th October, 1988, the year of Australia's bicentenary.

The occurrence, properties, and uses of andalusite, and its advantages over other refractory minerals and materials, are discussed. Ore reserves are given for the five producing areas, and statistics on production, export sales, and prices are included to illustrate the growth of the industry since the early 1960s. The mining and beneficiation procedures are described, with special reference to new techniques in concentration and magnetic separation. As fines dumps represent a considerable source of andalusite, possible methods of recovery are discussed. . The outlook for the future appears favourable, and possible competition from other sources and substitute refractory minerals are mentioned. It is concluded that the industry is in a sound position to maintain South Africa's status as the world's foremost producer and supplier of andalusite.

The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy mourns the passing of one of its most distinguished sons. Professor J. de V. Lambrechts died at Franschoek on 30th January, 1988, at the age of 76 years after a long illness. Mintek Application Reports A new series of Mintek reports made its appearance in 1987. The paper describes the difficulties experienced with inferior coking coals as Iscor began using larger blast furnaces for the production of liquid iron. Research conducted at Iscor from 1977 to 1979 showed that benefits could be gained from the use of partially briqueted charges, and it was decided to install briqueting plants at the Vanderbijlpark and Newcastle Works. Details are given of the later plant, which was supplied by a consortium consisting of Voest Alpine, Didier Engineering, and Sumitomo Metal Industries. Sumitomo also supplied information on the optimization of coke quality along the lines of their Sumicoal System. The results have been a marked improvement in coke quality, much better blast-furnace operation, and increased productivity.

Considerable effort is currently directed towards the development of non-explosive mining methods with the potential to allow continuous mining in narrow reef conditions. Besides improving productivity, continuous mining results in concentrated mining which has a significant impact on reducing infrastructure costs. CSIR: Miningtek recognized the potential of mini-disc cutters in a long or short wall application for selective hard rock mining in 1999. EEA was chartered to build a 780 mm diameter by 800 mm deep drum cutter head. While EEA designed and built the head, CSIR designed and built the drive mechanism and chassis for the trial machine. After assembly and shop testing at CSIR’s facility, the machine was shipped to a platinum mine for trials. This paper traces the development of mini-disc cutters and their application in South Africa.

The commissioning of a test facility for the calibration of anemometers by J. J. VAN RENSBURG (Student Member). After the erection of a commercially produced open-jet wind tunnel for the calibration of the anemometers used in mine ventilation, the wind tunnel was calibrated for routine use. There is a choice of five orifice plates. which, together with a variable-speed fan, can give a measurable range of air velocities in the test section from about 0,05 to 35 m/so The orifice plates were calibrated against a standard pitot tube, and it is now necessary only to measure the pressure drop across an orifice plate and to read off, from a set of graphs, the true outlet velocity in the test section. The paper describes the underlying theory and the test results.
