Raise-boring experiences in the gold mines of the Anglo American Corporation Group by J. W. Wilson M.Sc., M.I.M.M., F.S.A.I.M.M., M.A.I.M.E. and P. C. Graham M.Sc. (Eng.) Gold mining is being carried out at ever-increasing depths in South Africa. For reasons of safety and human comfort, it is becoming imperative for raises to be developed by means other than conventional drilling and blasting. Raise-boring is an attractive alternative method. Initial raise-boring experiences in South African gold mines showed disappointingly high costs due to the abrasivity and difficulty of drilling Witwatersrand quartzites. Consequently, a research and development project was instigated with the objective of making raise-boring an economically viable technique in hard abrasive rock. A Robbins 61R raise-borer was made available to the Research and Development team and a number of raises have been drilled. During these trials two advances in cutter design were tested. This paper presents the results obtained, including drilling costs, and provides details of the equipment used.

The crystallization of rutile from titaniferous slags by R. A. H. LYCETT, M.Se. (Eng.),"A.M.I.M.M. (Visitor), P. R. JOCHENS, Pr. Eng., M.Se. (Eng.) (Rand), Ph.D. (Member), and D. D. HOWAT, B.Se., Ph.D., F.R.I.C., F.I.M. (Fellow) Factors affecting the precipitation of rutile from smelter slags were investigated, with particular reference to the effect of additions of phosphorus pentoxide to the slag. The phases were identified and the phase boundaries determined for slags having phosphorus pentoxide additions of 0 to 50 per cent. The liquidus temperatures of these slags were determined, and a pseudo-binary phase diagram was constructed. Rutile crystallized as the primary phase from melts having a phosphorus pentoxide content of more than IS,S per cent. Prismatic rutile crystals whose TiO. content was more than 97 per cent were grown from melts that had a phosphorus pentoxide addition of 30 per cent. However, the morphology of the precipitated rutile was such as to make subsequent separation impracticable.

This title of is not that originally chosen for the Colloquium, which was 'A high gold price'. Such a title would have been unfortunate because it would have related the Colloquium only to the high gold price of the past two years, which reached the dizzy peak of 850 dollars per ounce in January 1980. The chosen title is, of course, the right one because it places the whole problem in the right perspective. It relates to a situation that has occurred many times before. Over the course of the past century, the gold price has periodically been inhibited from rising, so that it has undergone a succession of stepwise increments. With each increase, the relationship of the working cost to the gold price alters, and gives rise to a jump in ore reserves. Award for CMI fuelling technique Consolidated Metallurgical Industries Limited - the Lydenburg-based ferrochromium producer in the J.C.I. group - was one of the five recipients of the 1981 National Productivity Institute annual award.

The influence of two weeks of microclimate cooling on the state of heat acclimatization by N. B. STRYDOM, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Illinois) (Fellow), A. J. S. BENADE, M.Sc. (Potch.) (Visitor), and W. H. VAN DER WALT, B.Sc. (Potch.) (Visitor) Five volunteer Black subjects were acclimatized according to the climatic-room acclimatization procedure, and their states of heat acclimatization were determined by the usual heat-stress test. The subjects thereafter wore pre-frozen jackets in a somewhat higher environmental temperature (33,9/35,6 °C). stepping at the same rate as before for four hours a day for fourteen days. The heat-stress test was repeated and followed by a similar test at the higher environmental temperature. It was found that fourteen days of microclimate cooling in a very hot environment had no adverse effect on the degree of heat acclimatization. The sweat rates during microclimate cooling remained high, even though no sweating is possible beneath the pre-frozen ice-jacket. which indicates that there is an increase in sweat rate from the areas of exposed skin.

The complexity of modem open pit load-haul-dump systems is described, and the need for realistic working models is pointed out. Both standard and probabilistic simulation procedures are discussed, probabilistic simulation being indicated as the more powerful and practical technique. Acquisition of the necessary pit operating data required for simulator construction and general modelling procedures are described. Finally, results from a typical open pit simulator are used to indicate the scope of the technique.

"A hierarchical four-character code designed for geological and allied data may be used to log exploration drill-holes and store the information on magnetic media. The code is intended for use in semi-free format and permits the collection of as much, or as little, data as the geologist may require for the purpose in hand. A method of data storage by variable length records is discussed.Information may be retrieved by means of a simple enquiry language. Optional output facilities could allow the retrieval of data in a form suitable for direct input to a contouring package. The enquiry parameters and interrogation program can thus provide the interface between the data bank and associated application systems."

Nanobubbles (NBs) flotation separation can be an indicator for improving the efficiency of fine particles through the conventional process. Since flotation reagents such as frothers can reduce bubble size, they can potentially be used for the generation of NBs and develop a selective NB flotation separation. This study explored the flotation separation of fine phosphate particles from their associated minerals in the presence of NBs, which were generated by using a phosphate flotation reagent (Flo-YS: collector-frother). The results of flotation tests showed that in the presence of NBs, the flotation efficiency was significantly improved. However, in the presence of NBs, surface chemistry analyses (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) illustrated that the collector adsorption on the surface of phosphate particles decreased. A comparison between outcomes of various phosphate flotation conditions indicated that increasing the flotation efficiency in the presence of NBs may be due to the aggregation of fine particles by the generated NBs, and also selective adsorption of NBs (hydrophobisation) on the surface of particles. In other words, generating NBs by selective collectors may increase efficiency and decrease the collector consumption of a flotation process. "The decreasing availability of resources amenable to surface operations has led to increasing numbers of underground mines, with trends indicating this will continue into the future. As a result, there is a need for additional optimization processes and techniques for underground mines, with many analogous methods having already been developed for surface mining. Current methods for design and optimization of stope boundary selection and scheduling mainly involve heuristic methods which focus on a single lever. Individual optimality may be approached, but globally optimal results can be obtained only by an integrated, rigorous approach. In this paper we review previous methodologies for stope boundary selection and medium- to long-term scheduling and highlight the need for an integrated approach. Previous integrated approaches are reviewed and an improved modelling system proposed for shorter solution times and greater applicability to mining situations. Randomly generated data-sets for gold-copper mineralization are used to investigate the model performance, describing solution time as a function of data complexity.IntroductionThe increasing need for mineral resources is driving an increase in underground mines. Lower grade mineralization with larger amounts of overburden is becoming economically viable due to technological advances; however, the software and tools available for strategic underground mine planning are not well developed. Advances in the methods used to determine underground layouts and scheduling must occur to ensure underground mining is as optimized as open pit operations, as underground mining involves many more technical restrictions.The process of determining stope boundaries and scheduling is an example of an aspect of underground mining amenable to optimization (Topal and Sens, 2010). The current industry standard for medium- and long-term planning for sublevel stoping (SLS) is to exclusively determine stope outlines and then determine an appropriate sequence and schedule accordingly. This process violates the concept of optimality as integrating the constraints imposed by pre-determining stope outlines does not allow for considerations in scheduling to influence boundary planning (Ataee-Pour, 2005). An integrated planning process that combines both stope outlines and scheduling would approach the optimal solution and hence generate more value for operations. This investigation specifically deals with the underground sublevel stoping (SLS). Other underground mining methods such as block caving, sublevel caving, and room and pillar mining have unique characteristics and therefore require specific stope boundary/production scheduling considerations."

"Fuzzy-weighted integer goal programming has been developed and used to select the most suitable site to construct a central processing plant for several adjacent small-scale dimension stone quarries, based on the most effective criteria. In the first step of mathematical modelling, the most important goals and decision variables were defined. Accordingly, an objective function was used in the model for minimizing the sum of undesired fuzzy-weighted deviations. Fuzzy weights were determined by a matrix of pairwise comparisons of various expert judgments in this field and the fuzzy geometric mean. The goal and systemic constraints were also modelled. The most suitable site for the construction of the plant was selected after solving the mathematical model in the ExcelR Solver add-in. The selected site had various advantages over the other sites, such as the shortest average distance to the quarries, the shortest distance to power access and workforce, and the lowest land price. IntroductionSelection of the most suitable site of a plant is one of the most important considerations when constructing an industrial project. A suitable site has a significant effect on a company's competitiveness in the market. Selecting a desirable location for constructing plants such as mineral processing facilities is an essential part of the economic planning that will enable a company to meet the needs of related upstream and downstream operations. These units are considered to be best built near the relevant mining sites because of technical difficulties, the cost of transporting minerals, and the traffic hazard caused by the movement of trucks transporting materials. Two main types of research using multiattribute decision-making models have been reported for selection of a processing plant site (Safari et al. 2010, 2012). In that research, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) approach were applied to select the suitable locations for the mineral processing plants for phases 1 and 2 of Sangan iron ore mine."

Process control optimisation depends a lot on the availability of timely data from production to give operators a chance to make adjustments before potential process upsets or disruptions happen. A lot of data is already available with newer and updated machine technologies, but what about the process upsets coming from the raw materials that we use? They are natural products and therefore they are not of a stable composition or mineralogy. The production process depends on a certain chemical or mineralogical stability of the raw materials when they come to a roaster, kiln or sintering stage. Only then can the proposed reactions take place and the equipment be operated at stable temperatures. Laboratory analytical technologies have the limitation that they depend on representative samples and have a long time delay. Therefore online (real time) analysers are used nowadays in mining applications to obtain an early indication of the actual mined or to-be-processed ore. Most available technologies can only analyse inorganic content on an oxide or elemental level. Near infrared (NIR)- based online analysers can overcome that limitation and give a real time analysis of organic as well as inorganic composition, if required on a mineral level. The paper will present two case studies where the NIR online technology was successfully adapted.: a) Optimising refractory gold ore processing at the Goldstrike roaster operation b) Optimising the sinter process at a Japanese manufacturer. "SynopsisThe availability of advanced characterization techniques is integral to the development of advanced materials, not only during development phases, but in the manufactured components as well. At Necsa, two modern neutron diffractometers equipped with in-situ sample environments, as well as complementary X-ray diffraction instruments, are now available as User Facilities within the National System of Innovation in support of the South African research and industrial communities. Neutrons and X-rays, owing to their different interaction mechanisms with matter, offer complementary techniques for probing crystalline materials. Both techniques enable nondestructive investigation of phenomena such as chemical phase composition, residual stress, and texture (preferred crystallite orientation). More specifically, the superior penetration capabilities of thermal neutrons into most materials allows for the analysis of bulk or localized depth-resolved properties in a wide variety of materials and components. Materials that can be investigated include metals, alloys, composites, ceramics, and coated systems. In particular, depth-resolved analyses using neutron diffraction complements surface investigations using laboratory X-rays in many scientific and engineering topics. The diffraction techniques can add significant downstream value to the anticipated nuclear industry development activities.IntroductionMaterials characterization is central in understanding the relationship between the structure, properties, and performance in order to engineer materials that fit the performance criteria for specific applications. This is conveniently represented in the form of a tetrahedron, generally known as the material science paradigm (Figure 1).The availability of advanced characterization techniques is integral to the development of advanced metals, not only during development phases, but in the form of manufactured components. The primary factor contributing to the profitability of a platinum mine and its associated concentrator is the time taken from the first hoist of material from underground to the first batch of concentrate shipped. To minimize the time it would take to produce concentrate without stopping because of a lack of feed material a project was undertaken to integrate the mining model with a concentrator production schedule () in the most capital-effective manner. A secondary goal was to ensure detailed stockpiling requirements, as the concentrator is in an area where ?visual pollution? is to be avoided. To achieve this a dynamic stockpile model was created utilizing the mine production schedule resolved into a daily production figure. Four different concentrator development models were then proposed. The difference between the mine production and concentrator consumption was integrated over the life of the mine to provide the accumulated stockpile tonnages for both Merensky and UG2 ores. The stockpile levels were never allowed to fall below zero to prevent a situation where the concentrator was operational without feed material,. When a development option was selected, the standard metallurgical performance calculations were used to derive a concentrate production schedule, that was then used as a basis for commercial concentrate sale negotiations.

"The model described is a design and economic planning tool for analyzing surface mineral deposits. Mineralization, topography, costs and significant geologic features are input to the model. The results are:(i) final pit limits yielding the maximum total profit,(ii) annual cut-off grades and plant sizing yielding the maximum present value, and(iii) annual maps of the pit and annual production statistics for the mine, concentrator and smelter.Additionally, summaries are printed of the block mining sequence and cash flow. A special feature is an option to include dump-leaching operations. Stockpiling of material can also be simulated by the model. The model is built around theories of dynamic cut-off grades and a pit design algorithm. The dynamic cut-off grades maximize present value by examination of all economic and physical constraints for the optimum combination. The pit design algorithm is a set of rules formulated to find the maximum value from a special graph. The graph is different from graphs of analytical geometry, being made up of points and arrows connecting some of the points. These graph elements describe the relationship between any point in the deposit and the material which must be mined to get at that point. The model was designed to bring together the interdependent theories of economics, pit design and production scheduling."

"More intense furnace operations require effective cooling in order to achieve low refractory wear and good furnace lifetimes, making cooling technology an important aspect of furnace operations. However, the use of water - today’s standard cooling medium - has some disadvantages, as it can cause problems both during furnace start-up and operation, namely hydration problems, corrosion, and explosions. Apart from these aspects, the energy that is removed by extensive cooling cannot be recovered and is normally lost in the cooling towers.With METTOP’s new patented cooling technology it is possible to overcome the disadvantages of water by using an alternative cooling medium, namely ionic liquids (ILs). The main advantage of ILs is the fact that there is no risk of explosion should this liquid come in contact with molten metal. Furthermore, ILs can be used at higher temperatures than water - up to 200°C. This relatively high cooling medium temperature avoids hydration and corrosion problems and allows recovery of the energy by combining the ILTEC system and the organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology, for example.Due to the removal of the explosion risk, much higher safety standards can be achieved, particularly in critical areas such as tap-holes"

The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors which affect the performance of the loading and hauling fleet and also find possible solutions to eliminate these factors, so that the daily tonnages required could be produced .This is due to the high demand of manganese required by clients. The investigation strongly focuses on the performances of the three 777D Caterpillar trucks and the R984 C Liebherr Litronic Hydraulic Excavator. In the content of the study, these machines are used to remove and move the low grade manganese (also known as the top cut overburden) in order to expose the high grade manganese from north pit to dump 4. The objectives of the project were to determine the actual performance of the loading and hauling fleet per shift, compare the actual and the theoretical performance and identify areas that need to be improved. To achieve the goals set for the project, a number of activities were carried out. ?Perform a time study to compare the performance of the loading and hauling fleet with the manufacturer specifications ?Match the equipments analysis for Loading and hauling ?Road conditions analysis ?Rolling resistance and Road Gradients analysis ?Operating cost analysis.

The refractoriness of the gold in many of the pyritic ores from the eastern Transvaal is due mainly to the association between the gold and the sulphides, but it can be due to the presence of graphltlc carbonaceous material, which complicates the recovery of the gold by virtue of its adsorption activity. In an examination of the roasting characteristics of three flotation concentrates from the Barberton area, It was found that the gold in the concentrates occurred mostly in two forms: in very fine gold particles distributed within the arsenopyrite, and in a slightly coarser form loosely associated with the pyrite. Direct cyanidation of the concentrates gave gold extractions of from 16 to 30 per cent. After the concentrates had been roasted at temperatures of 650 to 700°C for 20 minutes with rabbling, the extractions varied from 86 to over 90 per cent. Examination of the residues after cyanidation indicated that gold was present in the porous calcines or in the calcined sulphide product. This observation, together with porosity measurements, suggests that physical encapsulation of the gold particles is the main reason for the refractory behaviour of the gold in the calcines.

A fundamental model, which considers the subprocesses of particle collection by bubbles in flotation, is applied to two comprehensive flotation surveys in the rougher stages of C3 concentrator, PT Freeport Indonesia. The flotation surveys focused on the collection of: ? cell-by-cell and size-by-size metallurgical, ? cell hydrodynamic, and ? pulp and surface chemistry information. The two surveys were conducted at significantly different feed tonnages, giving rise to significantly different feed particle size distributions, pulp densities and mean pulp residence times. A series of model simulations are performed with the aim of quantifying changes in copper recovery, on both a size-by-size and unsized basis, with changes in values of the hydrodynamic parameters and hydrophobicity of the copper sulfide mineral. This was carried out in an effort to identify the most promising route to increase overall copper recovery in roughing. It was found that by increasing the hydrophobicity of the copper sulfide mineral surfaces it became possible to optimise cell hydrodynamics, which targeted increased fine (-12 µm) copper sulfide mineral recovery but without adversely affecting coarse (+150 µm) copper sulfide mineral recovery.
