Primarily ferrochrome is used to introduce chromium into steels and alloys. Chromium enhances hardness, hardenability, corrosion, abrasion and wear resistance of the steel. High carbon ferrochrome is one the cheapest sources of chromium, which finds large consumption in foundries and steel plants. However, carbon leads to problems viz. weld decay and sensitization of steels at elevated temperature causing catastrophic failure. Thus high carbon ferrochrome which otherwise enjoys financial edge over its low carbon grade is not suitable for final alloying or adjustment of chromium content. Subsequently, its addition burdens a steel maker. Hence, metallurgists around the globe have researched on finding out suitable technique for refining of ferrochrome. Traditional production methods of low carbon ferrochrome have drawbacks i.e. high refractory consumption, losses of chromium in slag and fumes etc-. Later these were overcome by adopting relatively new methods namely, metallothermic reduction, triplex process, vacuum technique to directly produce extra low carbon ferrochrome. Mineral resource evaluation and estimation process is not an exact science; however it depends on the knowledge and experience of the competent person and his ability to apply his mind, make reasonable assumptions, interpretations and exercise sound judgment in the mineral resource estimation process. The mineral resource evaluation results in a mineral resource statement are disclosed to investors. The minerals industry is presently undergoing rapid changes in legislation governing the public reporting of mineral assets. It has gone through different phases of development with respect to the reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves (mineral assets). In the past no reporting was done and currently mineral assets are reported as a supplementary section that briefly describes the mineral asset termed ?the mineral reserve and mineral resource statement?. The current industry trend appears to be going towards recognition and disclosure of the mineral assets on to the balance sheet. This paper explores the salient issues behind the mineral resources and mineral reserve statement of vein and reef deposits published in the public domain. It also highlights the potential misleading consequences of these issues and which filter through to the valuation of these particular mineral assets. The creation of reporting standards in the minerals industry has made significant inroads in standardizing and consolidating the interpretation and understanding of the different classification categories in the industry in an effort to promote common interpretation towards these salient issues.

A reliable method to locate microseismic evets is an important objective for routine mine seismic monitoring. We developed an algorithm that can automatically and reliably locate an event from a single uniaxial trace. Signals created by microseismic events are recorded as seismograms that consist of direct P- and S-waves as well as the waves reflected off the underground excavations. We take advantage of the extra complexity these reflections introduce as they make the signal more unique. In our investigation we cross-correlated unaltered synthetic seismograms against trial waveforms created from a linear combination of appropriate waveforms from a library of numerically calculated strain Green’s tensors. We use a single uniaxial synthetic seismogram to invert for the source location, six moment tensor components, and frequency. The resulting cost functions are constructed as maximal correlations at each node in the mine grid through the true source x-planes. This function is maximized by differential evolution to simultaneously yield the source parameters. Sensitivity tests such as shifting the mine plans and altering the background velocities of the media are investigated to test the robustness of the method. We contaminate the data with 40% white noise to test the resolution against simulated real recorded seismograms. The method is demonstrated using synthetic data calculated with a realistic underground 3D velocity model.

In an effort to improve efficiencies and reduce costs, AngloGold has embarked on a process to develop and deliver consistent, high quality, tailings based support or construction products to stopes and tunnels on request. A three-phase approach of product conceptualisation, design and delivery has been adopted. To date a substantial amount of laboratory development has taken place with promising results, indicating that the project aims are achievable. Dans un effort pour améliorer le rendement et réduire les coûts, AngloGold s’est embarqué dans une opération qui vise à développer et fournir aux chantiers d’extraction et tunnels, sur demande, des produits de construction ou de support basés sur rejets qui sont réguliers et de haute qualité. Une méthode à trois volets a été adoptée : conception, création et livraison. A ce jour, un développement important en laboratoire s’est produit, avec des résultats pleins de promesses, qui semblent indiquer que les buts du projet peuvent être atteints. In der Bemühung, die Effizienz zu steigern und Kosten zu verringern, hat AngloGold begonnen ein Verfahren zu entwickeln welches auf Anfrage konsistent hochqualitative auf Haufwerk basierender Unterstützung oder Bauprodukte für Abbaustellen und Tunnels entwickelt und liefert Eine Dreiphasenplan zur Produktkonzeptualisierung, Design und Lieferung wurde adoptiert. Bis jetzt hat eine substantielle Anzahl an Laborentwicklung mit vielversprechenden Resultaten stattgefunden und aufgezeigt, daß die Projektziele erreichbar sind.

The Chairman declared the meeting open and, on behalf of the Branch, thanked the President for coming from Johannesburg to attend. Honnet; Vice-Chairman: J. N. Saunders; Immediate Past Chairman: J. G. Kirchner. The Chairman then read a letter from the scrutineers reporting that the following had been elected to the Committee: M. The Chairman thanked the scrutineers for their services, and congratulated Messrs Lawrie, Leimer and Zadkin on their re-election and Messrs Grobler, Lewis and Pearson on their election to the Committee. The Chairman announced that he had heard, with regret, that Mr. T. Zadkin would be leaving the O.F.S. at the end of August, 1969. Mr Zadkin had served on the Committee continuously since the inception of the O.F.S. Branch and records showed that he had only failed to attend three General Meetings in over nine years. The Chairman expressed the gratitude of the Branch for Mr Zadkin's invaluable services to the Institute, congratulated him on his well earned promotion and wished him well in his new position. INDUCTION OF CHAIRMAN The Chairman introduced Mr N. A. Honnet to the meeting by briefly outlining his past career and, after congratulating him on his election, called upon him to take the Chair. In congratulating the out-going Chairman on a very successful term of office, Mr Honnet said that due to the absence of many Committee Members for a large portion of the year Mr Kirchner had carried a heavy burden, and he moved a vote of thanks and appreciation for Mr Kirchner's efforts. This was carried unanimously. GENERAL BUSINESS There were no points raised under this heading. MINING AND METALLURGICAL CONGRESS The Chairman called on Mr W. R. Lawrie to give his talk on aspects of the Mining and Metallurgical Congress recently held in Britain. This presentation was illustrated with photographic slides and proved of great interest to Members. Mr D. D. Waterman proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Lawrie and the Chairman then asked Mr R. C. J. Goode to contribute to Mr Lawrie's address. Mr Goode thanked Mr Kirchner for his efforts during his very successful term of office and congratulated the in-coming Chairman and Vice-Chairman on their election. He then gave a brief talk on aspects of the Congress not dealt with in Mr Lawrie's address. These included the industry's requirements of graduates, the necessity of their rapid advancement and the desirability of sending such young men to attend future Congresses. Mr Goode announced that two symposiums will be sponsored by the Institute next year, one on Tunnelling and the other on Open Cast Workings.

This paper focuses on the role of the coal mine surveyor at the start of the 21st century. It demonstrates that surveyors must look beyond their legal appointment and pursue opportunities to add value at an operational or corporate level of the company. It also exposes the shortfall of statutory appointments in defining the surveyor?s role in terms of key business drivers of the company. One such an opportunity is the potential role of the surveyor in mineral accounting and quality assurance to meet mine requirements, market specifications and standards pertaining to corporate governance and reporting. Finally, some thoughts are expressed on what can be done to elevate current practice to best practice and how to achieve this goal

SRC rockmass classification have been applied to 25 tunnels in Spain and Italy, for which it was found that much heavier supports than those estimated by the RMR index were required. SRC and RMR indices and other relevant geomechanical data were obtained during the site investigation and construction stages. Data corresponding to in situ stress measurements, analysis of tectonic structures, and instability problems arising during construction were used to asses the state of stress. The relationship between tunnel section convergence and the SRC and RMR indices was also analysed. Support measurements based on SRC and RMR classification were compared with those actually used during construction. These analyses indicate that for most of the tunnels examined, supports estimated using the SRC were much closer to those actually installed than those predicted by the RMR index. Bei der Verwendung des SRC-Systems zur Klassifizierung des Gesteins als Baugrund für 25 Tunnel in Spanien und Italien wurde festgestellt, dass viel schwerere Abstützungen benötigt wurden, als wenn die Beurteilung anhand des RMR-Systems angefertigt würde. Die Klassifizierung anhand des SRC- und des RMR-Systems, sowohl als auch andere wichtige geomechanische Daten wurden während des Ablaufs der Erkundungen und der Bauausführung gewonnen. Die Resultate der Messungen der Spannungen vor Ort, die Analyse der tektonischen Struktur und die Stabilitätsprobleme während der Bauausführung wurden dazu verwendet, um den im Felsgrund vorherrschenden Spannungszustand zu definieren. Das Verhältnis der Messungen der Tunnelkonvergenz zu dem SRC- und RMR-Index wurde auch analysiert. Die durch das SRC- und RMR-System vorhergesagte Grösse der Abstützung wurde mit der Grösse der Abstützungen verglichen, die am Bau letztlich verwandt wurden. Diese Vergleiche zeigen, dass für die meisten der studierten Tunnel die Vorhersage der Abstützungen, die anhand des SRC-Systems angefertigt wurden, viel näher der wirklich verwendeten waren als die Vorhersage anhand des RMR-Systems. SRC et des index RMR et d'autres données geomechanical appropriées ont été obtenu pendant l'enquête de site et les étapes(scènes) de construction. Les données correspondant aux mesures de stress(d'accent) in situ, l'analyse de structures tectoniques et des problèmes d'instabilité surgissant pendant la construction ont été utilisées aux ânes(culs) l'état de stress(d'accent). Le rapport entre la convergence de section de tunnel et le SRC et les index RMR a été aussi analysé. Les mesures d'appui basées sur SRC et la classification RMR ont été comparées avec ceux en réalité utilisés pendant la construction. Ces analyses indiquent que pour la plupart des tunnels examinés, les appuis évalués utilisant le SRC étaient beaucoup plus proches de ceux en réalité installés que ceux prévus par l'index RMR.

"As part of the mining engineering curriculum, students are required to be placed in industry for vacation work or work-integrated learning (WIL). In this paper we review work-based placement as done at the four South African mining schools: the University of Johannesburg, the University of Pretoria, the University of the Witwatersrand, and the University of South Africa.Key aspects of past and current WIL (pre- and post-graduation) practices that may need attention are highlighted for consideration by all universities that provide professional qualifications. Work-directed theoretical learning, problem-based learning, project-based learning, workplace learning, and simulated work experiences are discussed as legitimate approaches to WIL.Regardless of the choice each institution makes, commitments of universities, preparedness of university teachers, and the desire for equity and excellence will play an important role in the provision of WIL.DefinitionsAccredited Qualification: a qualification awarded on successful completion of an accredited programme.Advisory Boards (or Committees): are essential infrastructure for a WIL curriculum that is built on the integration of the workplace and the university. This requires the collaboration of experts from both environments. Workplace advisors are critical to the success of the academy as they embody expert knowledge of the ‘real world’.Assessment: the process of determining the capability or competence of an individual against standards by evaluating performance.Category: a mode of registration defined in or under the ECSA Act which has a distinctive purpose, characteristic competencies, defined principal routes to registration, and educational requirements.Experiential learning: (in South Africa sometimes used synonymously with work placement or cooperative education) is a term used with a great variety of meanings in the international literature. More broadly, it may refer to learning that has meaningful learner involvement. It is the process of generating meaning from direct experience. In the international literature, experiential learning is learning through reflection on doing, which is often contrasted with rote or didactic learning."

One of the most significant features of iron ore concentrate (pelletising feed) is the specific surface area (SSA) that affects the achievement of desirable pellet properties. There are various methods to determine this parameters and currently, the most common is the Blaine air permeability method. However, due to the simplified assumptions including spherical and identical particles and 50% bed porosity, the Blain test does not provide accurate results. In fact, these two suppositions are far from reality. In this research, comparison of SSA measurement ways are investigated, containing laser diffraction testing and Blaine air permeability, on samples with different SSA, obtained from Ball mill and high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). The output data showed that the calculated amounts of SSA by means of laser analysis were far greater than any other one. Furthermore, in the same results of Blaine air permeability tests on samples comminuted by different grinding methods, it was observed that the SSA figures from the laser diffraction method for HPGR products were almost 800 units greater than Ball mill ones. "Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, its reputation for reliability in supplying platinum to global markets is under threat. This is due to the 49% decrease in output per worker (1999–2014), while the domestic costs have risen by more than 10% annually for the past 5 years. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% (2012–2016) has resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. The Chamber of Mines (now the Minerals Councilof South Africa) has suggested that solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures are required. This research aims to provide operational excellence through the application of event chain project management (ECPM) to improve productivity and reduce operational costs. A case study was used to carry out research in platinum mines, with data collected using a motion-time study to measure the current efficiency of operations in each mining stope through actual activity durations. The results indicate that through the application of the event chain project management methodology, risks affecting the mining stope schedule can be managed, the efficiency of operations was improved by reducing the time spent on each activity, productivity was increased by shortening the project duration, and operational costs were reduced in the process. IntroductionSouth Africa’s total mining industry production was 4.9% lower in 2016 than in 2015; it decreased by 1.9% year-on-year in December 2016, with the main contributor to this negative trend being the platinum group metals (PGMs) with a drop of 15.1% and contributing -3.8% percentage points (Statistics South Africa, 2016). Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, the 8% drop in production output since 2008 has put the platinum mining industry under the threat of being seen as an unreliable supplier to global markets. This decline in production is caused by the 49% decrease in output per worker between 1999 and 2014. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% from 2012 to 2016 and an increase in operational costs during the same period resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. A turnaround strategy is required to overcome these challenges. The Chamber of Mines has suggested, among others, the need for solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures. The implementation of these solutions will ensure that the PGM industry thrives and reaches its potential of growing production to more than 322 t by 2020 (Baxter, 2016)."

The overall supply of platinum is forecast to rise more than the demand, and market deficit will narrow somewhat, but is still substantial at about 480 000 ounces. Because of this deficit, the price of platinum is expected to remain high, not taking into account the impetus from funds and speculators. With this strong demand for platinum and the high price, platinum producers still need to initiate projects to not only sustain current production, but also expand output into the high demand. However, the rise in the platinum price does not entirely offset the drop in revenue due to the strong rand. Consequently, in the current economic environment, executives and managers are under extreme pressure to initiate only the highest yielding projects and implementing them successfully. During the initiation phase of a project, the cost of changing concepts is the least, and strategic project decisions are the most important. It is during this phase that the most value can be added to a project, therefore requiring inputs from highly skilled, creative and experienced people. This paper will discuss thought processes and paradigms during the initiation of projects that will assist project owners in the selection and initiation of successful and profitable projects. The project initiation process will also be discussed outlining selection models, risk analyses and funding considerations.

"Mineral reserve statements as well as optimizing mine planning require a block model with grades for each mining block. A cut-off grade is determined by considering the mining costs as well as the expected revenue for each block. These grades are estimated using various techniques, but in reality there is uncertainty in the grade values. These uncertainties result in two types of error. A type I error is where material is classified as ore and mined, but the true value is below the cut-off grade and the material is therefore waste. This material constitutes dilution. The type II error is where material is estimated to be below the cut-off grade and is classified as waste, whereas the true grade is actually above the cut-off grade. This material is not mined and the value is lost.This research considers the value of the lost ore and the costs of dilution under various degrees of uncertainty. Simulation using @Risk and mixed integer linear programing (Excel Solver) is used in a financial optimizer model to maximize either profit or net present value. This is applied to four Witwatersrand tabular gold deposits to investigate the impact of block grade uncertainty on cut-off grades.When optimizing for profit, value may be added by adjusting the cutoff grade slightly downwards. When optimizing for NPV, value may be added by lowering the cut-off grade significantly for the lower discounting rates. At higher discount rates, the lowering of the cut-off grades should be reduced, and in some cases an increase in cut-off grade may be required. Each mine reacted differently to the optimization and thus there is no single rule that can be applied across all tabular Witwatersrand gold deposits."

This paper describes developments in ferro-nickel furnace technology, specifically improvements to cooling methods, furnace controls, and high voltage furnace operating regime. The evolution of these technologies is briefly presented, as context for describing the current state of the art that has enabled ferro-nickel furnace operation at over 75 MW and specific energy consumption of less than 400 kWh/t dry ore. Examples from existing operations are used to illustrate present best practices, and potential future trends are discussed. The paper begins with an overview of the fundamental aspects of pyrometallurgical treatment of lateritic ores that drive ferro-nickel furnace design. Furnace wall cooling methods are related to the requirements resulting from specific furnace process conditions, including slag and metal compositions, as well as arc and bath power. The benefits of high productivity and low specific energy consumption resulting from high voltage (shielded-arc) operating practice are discussed, along with the furnace controls and electrical power train that enable such operation even with captive power generation.

Background The CSIR Division of Mining Technology assumed responsibility for the operations of the Hoist Rope and Mechanical Test Laboratories at Cottesloe in April 1999. The laboratories were previously the responsibility of the CSIR’s Division of Manufacturing and Materials Technology, before which they fell under the National Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (also of CSIR). As the focus of this conference is on safety in mines research institutes, it was thought appropriate that this paper should review some of the activities at Cottesloe and its role in supporting mine safety strategies.

ABSTRACT : Rock mass classifications RMR, Q and GSI do not suggest decreasing modulus ratio with the decrease in the quality of rock. These have been linked to joint factor, Jf , for better prediction. An engineering classification is suggested based on strength and modulus applicable to both intact and jointed rocks. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG : Fels Masse Klassifizierungen RMR, schlägt Q und GSI daß das Abnehmen von modulus Verhältnis mit der Abnahme in der Qualität des Felsen nicht vor. Diese sind zu gemeinschaftlichem Faktor, Jf, für bessere Voraussage verknüpft worden. Eine technische Klassifizierung wird auf der Basis auf Kraft und modulus vorgeschlagen die zutreffend sind zu beiden unversehrten und jointed Felsen. RESUME: RMR de classifications de masse de Rocher, Q et GSI ne suggèrent pas la proportion de modulus décroissante avec la diminution dans la qualité de rocher. Ceux-ci ont été reliés au facteur de jointure, Jf, pour mieux la prédiction. Une classification construisant est suggérée basé sur la force et modulus applicables intacts et les rochers de jointed.

Project evaluations of mineral deposits are necessary for mineral rights, owners and investors alike. A feasibility study provides a definitive technical, environmental and commercial base and is the key element leading to a decision to invest or not to invest. For example, the study may be used to justify further exploration and development expenditure or to provide a basis for a major underwriting to raise the required capital. There are three distinct phases in the development of a project and the type of study will differ depending on the quality of information available or the level of decision to be made. This paper looks at these three phases in the development of a mineral project and the type of study required; namely, a scoping study, prefeasibility, and a full feasibility study. I had the good fortune to attend the above Conference which was held in Kanpur, India, on 11-15 December, 1995. The Conference was held in honour of Professor P.C. Kapur of the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur. Professor Kapur was one of the early students of legendary teacher and researcher of mineral beneficiation, Professor Doug Fuerstenau of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. I have attended my fair share of international conferences and this one certainly rated at the top of the list on several counts. With an open-hearted hospitality which one might almost take for granted once you have spent some time in India, the organizers of the Conference looked after every need of their guests, including breakfast and transport to and from the conference centre, wonderful traditional lunches and dinners and outstanding entertainment in the evenings. The papers were generally of a high standard, and debate flowed enthusiastically and freely. Several international guests delivered seminal papers in their fields as discussed below.

This paper presents the second of a two part study on density stratification in a laboratory batch jig. The first study, reported elsewhere, investigated the effect of operating conditions on the stratification profile achieved at equilibrium. The study reported in this paper investigated their effect on the kinetics of density stratification under 18 different sets of operating conditions - five for binary systems with different particle densities; and 13 for a ternary system with different configurations of the jig cycle. Although the study was academic in nature (it involved simple systems of 8 mm glass beads) it has a number of practical implications. It found that the most influential operating variables affecting stratification kinetics are the amplitude of water displacement, the pulsion hold time, and, to a lesser extent, the pulsion time. It also found that reasonable rates of stratification can be expected in systems with density differences as low as 237 kg/m3 but below this the kinetics deteriorate significantly. The two studies together suggest that, within a broad range of operating conditions, the equilibrium stratification profile is independent of control variables and it is the control of stratification kinetics that has the primary influence on the quality of density separations in a jig.
